But with hints of a troubling history of his own, he’s also the kind of man that can be very dangerous . . .

Reseph may not know his background, or why he mysteriously appeared in Jillian’s life, but he knows he wants to stay. Yet when Jillian’s neighbors are killed and demon hunters arrive on the scene, Reseph fears that he’s putting Jillian in danger. And once it’s revealed that Reseph is also Pestilence, the Horseman responsible for ravaging the world with death and destruction, he and Jillian must face the greatest challenge of all: can they forget the horrors of a chilling past to save the future they both desire?

Interview with Lauren Clark

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Lauren Clark to the blog today.  Lauren, can you please share with us a little about yourself.

I’m a library nerd who’s always loved books. I spent my summers reading because my parents turned off the television every summer, all summer (no exceptions, and I am not kidding!). I loved school, loved college, and graduate school. I have two brothers, two sons, and two pet turtles. My favorite things include the color pink, Pure Barre, the ocean, my two children, good friends, and paying it forward.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

It’s not what I set out to do as a career, but I’ve always wanted to write a book. After ‘retiring’ from TV news to stay home with my kids, I got serious about writing. It took finishing 2-3 terrible manuscripts before I began Stay Tuned (my first novel), and that took several revisions to whip into shape!

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?  Sophie Kinsella is my all time favorite, but I do adore Emily Giffin, Ellen Hilderbrand, and Jennifer Weiner, and Jodi Picoult.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

I love the fun and humor in chick lit. I also like that the stories tend to be more about a journey in the protagonist’s life, and that the main thread in the story about a personal journey or growth. While finding a boyfriend or husband can be part of the novel, it’s usually not the overwhelming theme.

What are some of your writing rituals?

I’m super-outgoing and chatty, so it’s best for me to write in a place that’s secluded and quiet!! I prefer to write in the library of a local university. The staff knows me now, and have actually had to come and find me a few times when the library was closing!!

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Travel writer Julia Sullivan lives life in fast-forward. She jet sets to Europe and the Caribbean with barely a moment to blink or sleep. But too many mishaps and missed deadlines have Julia on the verge of being fired.

With a stern warning, and unemployment looming, she’s offered one last chance to rescue her career. Julia embarks on an unlikely journey to the ‘Heart of  Dixie’—Eufaula, Alabama—home to magnificent mansions, sweet tea, and the annual Pilgrimage.

Julia arrives, soon charmed by the lovely city and her handsome host, but her stay is marred by a shocking discovery. Can Julia’s story save her career, Eufaula, and the annual Pilgrimage?

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I lived near Eufaula for several years and loved to drive up for the day and wander around the historic district. I found the mansions, churches, and landmarks fascinating. During the annual Pilgrimage, they have tours of many homes, gardens, and buildings. In the evening, they even hold tours of the cemetery and tell ghost stories!! It’s a great family weekend, with music, costumes, and great Southern food.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I am researching for my next novel, The Pie Lab, which is a real restaurant in Greensboro, Alabama. This story will follow a girl who’s gone off to a big city (like Atlanta or New York) and vows NEVER to come home. She’s forced to return to Greensboro, though, when her romantic relationship falls apart. Since she’s burned a lot of bridges, it will be interesting to see how she makes amends.  The Pie Lab, as a business, is a great concept, as it offers on-the-job training and the owners are very active in the community. Added bonus…the pies are delicious! The Pie Lab has been featured in Southern Living and The New York Times.

What would you be if you were not an author?

Gosh, I have so many story ideas that it would be awful if I couldn’t write!!! If I absolutely couldn’t write, I would probably go back to working in TV in some capacity.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?  Emily Giffin and Jennifer Wiener’s latest novels. I am also waiting for Juliette Sobanet, Tracie Bannister, and Kimberly Kincaid’s new books!!!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A HUGE thank you and a BIG hug to everyone who has read and enjoyed Dixie or Stay Tuned. If you’ve left a review on Amazon, BN.com, or GoodReads…. you rock!!!! It means the world to me!! Please feel free to email me with comments, ideas, or questions (laurenclarkbooks@gmail.com) or send me a note on Facebook or Twitter. I answer every single message!

Contemporary Erotic Romance

Legal secretary, Olivia Warner enjoys being single and, aside from her closest gal pals, usually keeps to herself. But the night of her thirty-fourth birthday, she and her friends spend a fun-filled evening at a local bar where her friends dare her to approach a man, and spend the night with him. Olivia’s not one to turn down a dare, especially from her old college pals. She only hopes the man in question is in for some good conversation, because that is all she’ll give him.

Darren “Dare” Shalvis has given up on women. He’s tired of being chased for his money, good looks, and prowess in bed. He prefers to meet a woman who, for once, wants nothing more from him than mere conversation. If only the woman asking him to spend the night with her wasn’t his favorite legal secretary.

Accepting a dare has never been so tempting…

She gave a small laugh and lifted the glass for a drink.

Dare watched her lips as she drank. He wondered what they’d taste like. It was something he’d considered many times lately.

He was drawn to her, but unsure he’d ever act on it.

Her whole demeanor said ‘hands off.’ And he wasn’t sure he was ready for the challenge.

“Tell me about it.”

“I’ll cut right to the chase.” As he turned on the stool, their knees brushed. Neither moved.

He thought he saw her eyes lit up. Perhaps Ms. Warner wasn’t as immune as he thought.

“My friends brought me here tonight for my birthday.”

“Happy birthday.”

She smiled. “Thank you. The jury’s still out whether it’s happy or not. My friends decided that as a present they’d get me a man.”  She blushed and reached for her drink.

“Go on.” Intriguing.

She set down her glass and continued, “They dared me. Dared me to find myself a man and spend the night with him.”

Women…who understood them? He’d only ever participated in dares when he was younger. He didn’t think anyone took them seriously anymore.

“And you need my help, how?” Dare’s heart rate accelerated. She wasn’t asking him to…

She stared up at him, her gaze steady. “I need you to spend the night with me.”

If he hadn’t heard it with his own ears, he wouldn’t have believed it. This night was the strangest he’d had in a long time. It was as if he’d been offered a million dollars on a silver platter.

Of course, he wanted to spend the night with her. He’d fantasized about it many times. He just wasn’t clear on what exactly she was asking. He didn’t want any misunderstandings. “Are you asking me to spend the night with you to…” Dare cleared his throat. “…be with you?”

“Oh! No, yes, I mean no. Dammit, I’ve screwed this up.”

“Relax.” He put a hand on her knee. “It’s okay. Let’s try this—do you want me to have sex with you?”

Olivia groaned. Dare love that sound, and heat filled his groin.

“No. Not to have sex. God, this is mortifying.” Olivia placed her hand over his where it still rested on her knee. “Just to spend the night together—a movie, hang out, whatever—until eight a.m., when the dare is over.”

Dare laughed. She talked so fast he could hardly keep up. He’d never seen her so animated before. He liked her flustered and breathless…a lot. He wondered if she looked and sounded like that during sex.

He couldn’t go that route. Not now.

“Okay, so let me get this straight. You want us to spend the night together—with no sex—until morning? All because of a dare? Why didn’t you just say no?”

“I can’t. In college, the five of us made a pact—in blood, for God’s sake—that we’d always be friends and never back down from a dare. Trust me, right now, I wish I’d never made it.”

He chuckled. “Yes, I can imagine how you feel.”

“I’m so tired after the day we had. This was the last thing I needed tonight.”

“Yeah, when I stopped by the office today you seemed a bit irritated.”

She sighed and ran her fingers over his hand. Dare was surprised how comfortable it felt to have their knees and hands touch. He didn’t think Olivia was even aware she caressed his hands…or wreaked havoc on his libido. If her innocent touches could send him into overdrive, he wondered what would happen if she put all she had into it.

“It was the day from hell. I just wanted to meet the girls for a few drinks, then head home to soak the day away.”

Dare grit his teeth and tried not to think of Olivia in a bathtub—water floating around her body, relaxed, languid. The image could send him over the edge.

“Well, you’re in luck. I’m your man for the night.”

Olivia smiled and her eyes danced.  “Thank you. I really appreciate it. The last thing I wanted to do was have to pick up some random guy. I’m so glad you were here.”

Pleased he could help her, Dare grinned. He realized he wanted to anything to put that carefree smile on her face.

“So.” He took a sip of his beer. “What do you want to do?”

She scowled. “Well, we could go back to my place. I have a spare room that you can crash in if you want.”

Surprised, Dare took in her flushed face. “Are you sure?”

She nodded. “Yeah. We don’t exactly have to stay up all night. It’s still spending the night together, right?”

He chuckled. “Yeah, in a manner of speaking. Your friends weren’t specific.”

A smug smile crossed Olivia’s face. “No they weren’t. Which is a testament to how much they thought this through. I would have made a list of do’s and don’ts.”

They both laughed. Olivia had a naughty streak and he liked it. Liked it—and her—very much. A night with Olivia Warner wasn’t what he’d expected.

Sure, he’d thought of her in his bed often, writhing and moaning with passion, but he never thought fantasy would become a reality. He couldn’t let the opportunity go.

His buddies didn’t call him Dare for no reason. He could never resist a challenge.

He placed both hands on her shoulders, drew her gaze from her glass, and put his cards on the table.

“What if we have an agreement?”

She frowned. “What do you mean?”

“For us to spend the night together, we should have some ground rules.”

“Ground rules?”

“I will spend the night with you. More than eager to do so, except one thing.”

“What’s that?” she whispered. He barely heard her but saw her lips move.

He wanted to taste them, desperately.

“I don’t want to sleep in any spare room.”

“You don’t?” She gawked at him.

Her expression was comical but Dare didn’t feel like laughing.

“No. I want to spend the night in your room.” Dare had her full attention. She stared at him, eyes wide. “In your bed.”

O Heroes My Heroes
by Cassandra Carr
A couple of readers and critique partners have mentioned how it seems I do a lot of scenes, particularly sex scenes, from my hero’s point of view (POV). Or, in this case, my heroes’ POV, since my newest release, Double Vision, is a m/f/m menage. Want to know why I do that? Because I LOVE MY HEROES.
There’s nothing wrong with any of my heroines. Obviously I like them too or I’m doing something very wrong as a writer. But I seriously adore my heroes. They’re hot, they’re funny, and frankly, many of them seem more interesting to me. Plus I love writing the male POV in general, particularly during sex scenes.
I think in erotic romance, if you’re more focused on the hotness of the sex (at least in the beginning of the book), it’s easier to do the male POV. After all, men tend to be a little less focused on the emotions of sex and more on the physical, which lends itself well to erotic romance.
You can do much funnier dialogue with men too, I think, especially internal dialogue. I’ve asked my hubs about the internal dialogue men have while they’re talking to a woman they’re interested in, on the first date, sleeping with them for the first time, and I couldn’t believe how insecure they are. That’s why, in my books, you see a lot of guys saying, “Nice one, moron” and similar things to themselves. Sure, women say things like this too, but for some reason it’s much funnier when some smokin’ hot guy who seems to have it all together is calling himself a dumbass.
Do you like the male point of view? Why or why not?

EXCERPT FROM Strawberries and Whipped Cream

We ate dinner, drank some wine, and talked about our week. Maybe tonight I would finally pop the question. After cleaning up, I refilled our glasses.

“Did you get something for dessert?” Emma asked.

I smiled. “Yes, I did. Why don’t you go into the living room and make yourself comfortable while I get it ready.”

“Okay. Are you sure you don’t need help?”

“I’m sure.”

After she left the kitchen, I gathered the bowl of strawberries and can whipped cream from the fridge. I walked in the room to find her on the couch, sipping her wine. I sat down next to her and placed the food on the coffee table.

“I love strawberries, but why the can of whipped cream?” she asked with a twinkle in her eyes.

“Close your eyes. No peeking,” I whispered in her ear.

I took a strawberry and traced her bottom lip with it. She opened her mouth slightly, and I allowed her to take a small bite. A low moan escaped her lips, and my dick twitched in response. I began to feed her another piece of fruit. My cock was getting harder by the minute as I watched her lips wrap around the strawberries.

“I want to feed you one,” she said as she opened her eyes.

“I have a better idea. Close your eyes,” I said in a deep voice.

Emma sighed and closed her eyes. I picked up a strawberry and touched her bottom lip with it, and she opened her mouth to take it in. I leaned in and bit the other end, letting our lips meet and eliciting a faint squeal from her.

“Would you like some whipped cream?” I asked her as I grabbed the can and shook it.

“Yes,” she whimpered.

I squirted some whipped cream on her bottom lip. She seductively licked them while looking at me lustfully. I groaned, shifted to adjust myself, and placed my lips on hers. She wrapped her arms around me and the kiss deepened. Our tongues rubbed against each other. She tasted like whipped cream. Pulling away, I placed kisses down her neck and made my way to her chest. I lifted her shirt over her head. She was wearing a pink lace bra.

“Beautiful,” I whispered as I reached around her and unhooked her bra. I slid the straps off her arms, placing more kisses on her neck. “Lay back,” I told her as I took my shirt off.

I unbuttoned her jeans and slowly unzipped them. She lifted herself up as I slid them down her amazing legs and threw them on the floor. She was a sight to behold in just a pair of pink boy shorts.

“Do you trust me?” I asked.

EXCERPT FROM Instant Attraction

We walked out of the restaurant and down the hall into the main lobby of the hotel, my eyes scanning for any photographers. I really didn’t want my face all over the tabloids tomorrow.

“I had a great time meeting you today. So, what now?” Slade asked as he looked deep into my eyes.

“I don’t know,” I whispered. I didn’t want the afternoon to end.

“I don’t want to leave you just yet, Jewel,” he whispered in a sexy tone.

I bit my bottom lip and started to fidget. “Then don’t.” I took a deep breath, trying to figure out everything that was racing through my head. “Would you like to come to my suite for a drink, maybe?” I couldn’t believe I’d just asked him that, but I knew what I wanted, and at the moment it was him.

“I thought you’d never ask.”

We stepped in the elevator and the doors closed. We were alone. Before I could process what I was doing I was kissing him. The simple kiss set all the nerves in my body on fire. The elevator stopped and I pulled away as the doors opened.

“This is my floor,” I said breathlessly.

We walked into the hallway in silence. The tension between us was so strong. We reached my suite and I swiped my card to open the door. I could feel his gaze on me, it was making me nervous and turning me on at the same time. My stomach was in knots as I walked in, but not the bad kind of knots, the I-want-to-jump-him kind of knots. He was making me crazy. I truly just wanted to go with what I was feeling. I was so attracted to him. As soon as the door shut Slade pushed me against the wall and started kissing me.

“Jewel, you are so alluring,” he said as he kissed my neck.

“Slade,” I moaned. I could feel how hard he was as he pressed harder into me.

“I want you,” he said as his hand grazed my breast. “Do you want me?”

“Yes!” My heart was pounding in my chest as I led him to the bed. His urgent lips were on mine. He unzipped my sundress and it fell to the floor, leaving me in only a black lace bra and thong.

“So sexy,” he whispered in my ear as he kissed my neck.

Northwest Perks

Kristine Grayson

When people hear that I live in the Pacific Northwest, they assume I came for the rain. I did come for the weather—I was raised in Northern Wisconsin where the summers hit 90 degrees and the winters could go to minus 30 (without wind-chill). So living in a temperate climate truly appealed to me.

But everyone assumes writers stay indoors, and rain keeps them there. Naw. In fact, I like the rain. It’s usually warm, and I take a daily walk, rain or shine.

What brought me to the Pacific Northwest were other writers. Science fiction and mystery writers Damon Knight and Kate Wilhelm lived in Eugene, Oregon. After my future husband Dean Wesley Smith and I visited them while on a trip looking for neutral territory to live, we thought Eugene might be a good environment. Lots of writers lived nearby. Even more moved to the city later.

Ultimately, Eugene wasn’t to our taste. We moved to the Oregon Coast, where even more writers live. From Jean Auel to some playwrights whose work you know, but whose names you never heard of, writers flock to this place. And even more show up to visit. Just last week, two bestselling mystery writers dropped in unannounced.

We have a weekly lunch for professional writers only, and anywhere from ten to twenty writers attend. We keep up with the industry and we gossip about cats. What else would writers do?

But I have to admit that one thing I love about the coast is its quiet. I do get a lot done, primarily because there isn’t a lot to do here. We have seven movie theaters, a summer concert series, and that’s about it. The beach appeals, but everything else in town shuts down around 9 p.m.

I can’t get distracted because there’s nothing to distract me. And except when I’ve finished a book and want to Party!!!, I like it that way. At those times, I visit places like Los Angeles, where my latest novel, Charming Blue, is set. I get some business done, I see friends, and I do lots and lots of things you can’t do on the Oregon Coast.

Then I come home, climb into my little office, and make things up—rain or shine.

What’s With the Spanking?
by Patricia Green

Sometimes, when I’m talking about my writing to people who are open-minded, I describe my current projects as “spanking romance.” I haven’t always worked with strong spanking themes, but I am now, and it hearkens back to my early reading of historical romance from the ’70s and ’80s, when spanking was much more commonplace in mainstream works. I’ve always enjoyed romance stories with plucky heroines who sometimes overstep and need a bit of a OTK (over the knee) reminding to mind their manners. That may make me a little odd to some, and it certainly gets titters and odd looks from people. Occasionally, it’s a conversation stopper. But, the fact is, it’s a sub-genre that has a steady, elite (skeptics might say small), readership.

A close friend also has an interest in spanking stories, and he was enthusiastic about a few spanking fiction sites he found on the ‘net. I was between projects at the time, so checked into them. The one I found most enjoyable was Blushing Books [link: http://www.blushingbooks.com]. I looked through what they had to offer, bought a few delicious-looking books, and checked out their sister site The Woodshed [http://www.herwoodshed.com]. I was enraptured by what I found at this duo of delectable sites. It made me want to write for them. So I did!

In traditional historical romance from the 20th century, there were often situations where the heroine needed a few swats to get her attention or make a point regarding her safety or behavior. It often drew the hero and heroine closer together, and had a sexy component (though those early books didn’t really fall into an “erotic” category, they were pretty titillating). Spanking was used to emphasize that a woman had a place in the world (historically) and she ought to remember it. I didn’t mind the sexism then, and I don’t mind it now.

In current, contemporary romance, spanking isn’t prevalent. It kind of got lost in the rise of feminism and über-heroines. Nothing wrong with that, times change. But it does make those of us with an interest in spanking romance search for resources beyond the Big Six publishing houses and their desire for political correctness.

Enter Fifty Shades of Grey and its sequels by E L James and an interesting spanking scene therein. A scene that has a lot of otherwise thoroughly modern women quaking in their lust. I can’t speculate where that is going to lead us, but based on the enormous popularity of the Fifty Shades trilogy, I’m guessing you’ll see a few more spankings in contemporary romance novels on your supermarket shelves very soon.

Trends in publishing are fascinating, and the spanking trope is only one. It’s one that I’m happy to take advantage of and, of course, I’m hoping that it’s on the upswing. I’m unlikely to hit the author lottery like Ms. James, but if I can entertain a broader spectrum of readers, I’ll be a happy camper.

It’s another Journey Family story, with all the warm fannies that entails.

Queenie Journey has a trust problem. Her ex-husband left a bad taste in her mouth, and now she’s afraid of making emotional attachments to a man. Even a man like her neighbor, the handsome Will Mazie. She’s determined to keep him at arm’s length.

Will spent many years as a screenwriter in Hollywood, and yet always yearned to be a rancher. He chose Texas because of its friendly residents. Except for his new neighbor, Queenie, who seems to have a big chip on her shoulder where he’s concerned.

Getting her rump tanned by Will helps Queenie find her manners, and Will soon falls for the feisty blonde. Circumstances keep getting in the way, and yet they can’t keep themselves away from each other. Maybe they aren’t meant to.

BLURB:

The next day was spent wind-surfing followed by lazing at the beach until the sun went down. She and Deuce took a boat tour of the nearby reef at sunset, and discussed politics and religion. They had both in common, but they found points on which they differed and it made for a lively conversation. They kissed several times, and Pilar’s breasts firmed and her nipples got hard as pebbles under his fingers.

Though Deuce made it very clear that he desired her, that he found her attractive and sexy, he didn’t push hard. He was watching her closely, like a jaguar, waiting for the moment that she couldn’t stand keeping him away any longer. It was a scary and thrilling thought to consider sleeping with him with no commitment and no future. In this case, what happened in Jamaica would stay in Jamaica.

EXCERPT #1:

Excerpt from Liv’s Journey by Patricia Green

At first, there was a cool breeze on her bare bottom, as the pecan trees shielded her from the harsh sun. Birds chirped incessantly; it seemed like all the birds in the world came to Texas in the spring. Trey’s thighs under her belly were warm and hard and there was a growing lump against her left hip where his excited cock lay tucked into his jeans. As his hand passed over her bottom, Trey hummed softly. It was a sound of pleasure, a calm sound, a controlled sound.

Liv’s heart beat faster, knowing what that sound presaged. The humiliation of being bare-assed and over his lap was nothing compared to what was to come.

The sharp retort of the strap on her butt cheeks silenced the birds entirely. Some flew away in fright. And it hurt, but Liv gasped not out of pain but surprise at the sudden smack. Even knowing that it was to come, the exact moment it fell was always one second before it was expected. The first blow was still echoing through her mind when there was a second, third, and fourth. Heat blossomed over her rear and a sharp sting became a bright bloom. She moaned as the count rose above ten, and she couldn’t help but squirm.

“Still, angel.” His free hand pressed down on her back to keep her steady. She couldn’t do it herself. Her body wanted to wriggle away from the pain. Or, parts of it did. Some parts, the parts that sometimes wouldn’t heed her better judgment, got wet and slick and very ready for the reward Trey would share with her.

As the count reached twenty-two, tears began to stream from Liv’s eyes and her moans became sobs. She wanted this spanking, she knew she both needed and deserved it. Tears would cleanse any lingering feelings of guilt over poor behavior and her reward for taking her punishment would be hot, hotter than her flaming ass.

Liv lost count after twenty-five blows from the strap. She knew her bottom would be striped and fiery red. She’d seen it in the mirror after times like this. Perversely, she wore those stripes like a badge for the day or two they lingered. She’d earned her pleasure. She’d paid for her transgressions. Conflict was over and only sweet contentment remained.

Crying freely, she sobbed and sniffled as the spanking stopped. Trey’s big, hot hand glided over her stinging behind reverently, and sometimes a finger would trace one of the welts left by the strap.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her voice thick and watery.

His fingers slipped between her legs and found her pool of excitement. Her hot face got hotter. “You gonna be a good girl now and mind when I’m tellin’ you to do what you know you should?”

“It’s a habit…”

“A habit we need to get you over or you’ll be miserable, Liv.”

His fingers dipped deeper into her pussy and explored a little. A wave of pure desire washed through Liv’s belly.

“Yeah,” she agreed, though her mind was on those fingers. They retreated slightly and slid toward her swollen clit. “Please. Trey. Please.”

She could hear the smile in his voice as he responded. “Please what?”

The last of her tears dripped onto the leaf-strewn ground. “Please, fuck me.”

He rolled her over on his lap and pressed her face against his broad chest. “You’ll have to wait until after.”

“After! But that’s hours from now!”

“Yup.”

She looked up into his face, hoping for a teasing look in his brown eyes. The crinkles at the corners told her that he was smiling, even before she noticed his grin. “You can’t be serious.”

“I am.”

“Trey!”

He slid his hand up her torso and cupped a full breast, his thumb flicking over her nipple as it pressed against her bra and thin cotton blouse.

“You’re being mean.”

“Maybe.”

She growled her frustration and squirmed, her bottom hot and itchy against his denim. One more try. “Please?”

“Nope. After.”

Trey did things in his own time, and in his own way. Liv was usually happy about that; she trusted him after all they’d been through. So she’d wait for her reward. After wasn’t so far away.

Interview & giveaway with Darynda Jones

4thBlogTourTitleBadge copy

Welcome back Darynda.  I am so excited to have you back on the blog.  Thank you for taking time out of your very busy schedule to stop by and answer a few questions.

#1 So, *looks longingly at D* what’s new? Anything exciting happening in your world these days?

Well, I’m currently working on rewrites for the second in the Darklight Trilogy, Death,
Doom and Detention. Then it’s on to Fifth Grave Past the Light, the fifth in the Charley
Davidson series. I also have three other series started, but I’m trying to focus. Not easy
when you really do have ADD. 🙂

#2 Oh Yeah!!! You have a couple new books coming out… Can you tell us about your latest book in Charley’s series?

Absolutely! In Fourth Grave, we learn a lot more about Charley and her powers as well as about Reyes. Many questions are answered. And, naturally, we have a fun mystery to look forward to. But I think the heart of this book is the development of the relationship between Charley and Reyes. Let’s just say LOTS happens and leave it at that. *evil grin*

#3 How long do you foresee Charley’s series to go on? And what is next for Charley?

My editor wants it to be ongoing, so there’s just no telling. I would love
it to continue for quite a while longer. I adore writing about Charley and her
antics. As for the next installment, I am hoping Fifth Grave will be quite a bit creepier. I want it to be a tad scary. I AM writing about the grim reaper, after all. I think she should have some creepy moments in her life. As an added bonus, I’m hoping to cause a few nightmares, but I doubt I can write that scary. Charley is always cracking jokes and ruining it for me.

So for those who may have been living under a rock.

Here is a look at Charley’s Series

Book 1-First Grave on the Left

Book 2-Second Grave on the Right

Book 3-Third Grave Dead Ahead

Book 4-Fourth Grave Beneath my Feet

Well, as you’ve probably guessed, the series is about a female PI who was born the
grim reaper. She solves mysteries for both the living and the dead. She has a best
friend-slash-receptionist who is the coolest sidekick a grim reaper could ever hope for, a
dark and mysterious lover who gives her more trouble than he’s probably worth, and an
associate in the form of a skip tracer who once tried to have her committed. Along with
the rest of her circle—some alive, some not so much—she attracts trouble like a spill on aisle 8 attracts a lawsuit. But she does it with style.

#4 What is the one book everyone should read before they die?

Just one? Wow. Okay, I think I am going to have to stick with one of my favorite classics and say To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. That book touches on so many sensitive issues that are still relevant today. And it does it beautifully.

#5 Who is your celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet them?

Okay, I have to admit, this changes about every six months. Right now, it’s Jeremy Renner. He is an amazing actor. Skill is sexy. And his eyes are so expressive. He is just such a hottie. If I just happened to meet him, I would probably stare. He would get really uncomfortable. I would continue to stare. He would ask me to stop. I would nod and continue to stare. He would call security. It would be a mess. I think I’ll stay in my writer’s cave where I belong. I can’t be trusted.

#6 Is there anything else you would like to add?

Besides my undying love and gratitude??? Nope. I’m good.

Darynda, Thank you so much for stopping by Books-n-Kisses.  And so can’t wait to meet you in October.  I will be the one acting a fool  J

To finally meet you face-to-face? I’ll be just as silly! I cannot wait!!!

Take Me To Your Planet
— or —
Writing Futuristic Romances
by: Myra Nour

Do you want to zoom away in a spaceship? Or be captured by a hunky alien? Perhaps your fantasy is to be whisked off to a far future society, where all diseases have been eliminated? Or maybe you’d prefer a society closely aligned with Earth’s medieval period-complete with warriors, sword fighting, and castles.

No matter how diverse all these different ideas seem, they all have one theme in common-they can all be found in futuristic romances.

Do you need to be an astronaut or have been abducted by aliens to write about other worlds? Certainly not! Studying the masters of s/f and fantasy for style is a great start. Look at the various ways the masters handle their worlds, such as: Issac Asimov’s technical expertise, Poul Anderson’s humorous touch, Andre Norton’s magic, or Robert E. Howard’s dark/magical adventures.

One aspect you need to consider is how hard you want the science to be in your story. In other words, do you like writing technical information with lots of details about the future society? Or do you prefer to concentrate on the characters/storyline and have softer science? For example, in Love’s Captive, the society I created is based on the Medieval system. It’s something I’m interested in, and I don’t care to read or write hard science fiction.

If you choose to go with hard science-you better have your facts straight or fans will call you on it. Study articles or books on science facts, recent discoveries, and future ideas. Maybe you can gleam something to incorporate into your story.

A good way to get the feel for what you want to write is to study your favorite authors style. There’s a reason you like their books-so study their works and see if you can incorporate some of their style into your work. Of course you must find your own writing voice, but imitation is the best kind of flattery. And there is no reason to reinvent the wheel. If you love Dara Joy’s Alpha males and the s/f plus fantasy elements she infuses into her stories, then perhaps that style would work well for you too.

Articles are a great resource in helping you seek information, check your facts, or maybe give you ideas. A good site where interesting articles can be found about different aspects of writing s/f romance stories, are at Science Fiction Romance. www.sfronline.com

I discovered several intriguing articles, such as Creating Believable Aliens, Worldbuilding, and Cursing in Alien Tongues. I think these would be worth a good “looksee”.

The different terms you hear in connection with the genre may confuse you. Is your book s/f romance, fantasy romance, or futuristic romance? Don’t worry about it. Write your story first. Later you can consider how to classify it. Friends can help by giving you feedback. Also, critique partners and writing groups can give their two cents worth. Ultimately your publisher will assign the subgenre they feel is appropriate for your work.

Now, write that exciting book!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I’m optimistic; happy unless something really bad happens; a good listener and friend. My best compliment came from a friend who said I was a ‘Steel Magnolias’. She thought I was kind and gentle when she met me, but then found out the difficulties I’ve had in my life, and added a “backbone of steel” to that assessment.

I was an LPN for a total of 8 years; became interested in the mind more than the body, and helped put myself through college working as a nurse. Graduated cume laude with a BA in Psychology and MA in Counseling. Until several months before I graduated with my BA, when I met Simon, I was a single mother of two small children.

I worked odd jobs until I landed my first job working in my college area – as a social worker for physically and sexually abused children. Then, I found my nitch, as a college counselor. Loved it! Spent the rest of my career in this area, except for 3 years when I taught Psychology and Sociology at a local college. Loved this even more!!

My Simon has been very supportive about the whole writing process. We both agreed that when our financial circumstances would allow, that I’d quit work and write full-time, and that happened in 1998. I’ve been very lucky. After 24 years of working in a profession that helped people, I am able to do something for myself – writing.

Kimberly’s review of A Fool’s Gold Christmas by Susan Mallery

TITLE: A Fool’s Gold Christmas
AUTHOR: Susan Mallery
PUBLICATION DATE:   09/25/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The unrelenting cheer in Fool’s Gold, California, is bringing out the humbug in dancer Evie Stryker. She learned early on that Christmas miracles don’t happen, at least not for her. And this year seems like no exception. An injury has forced her to return to the family fold, no matter that they’re estranged. She won’t add to the awkward scenario by being seduced by the bad-boy charms of her brother’s best friend, the last man she should ever want to date. Even when she’s recruited to stage the Fool’s Gold winter festival, she vows to do as promised, then move forward with her life anywhere but here.Jaded lawyer Dante Jefferson is getting used to the backwater town he now reluctantly calls home, but the pounding of little dancers’ feet above his temporary office is more than any man should have to take! When he confronts their gorgeous teacher, he’s unprepared for the attraction that sears him down to the soul. Evie is his best friend’s sister — off-limits unless he’s willing to risk his heart. Dante has always believed that love is the most dangerous force in the universe, but that was before he had to reckon with the magic of a certain small town, where miracles do seem to happen….

REVIEW:
There is no place I would rather spend Christmas than Fool’s Gold. With the beautiful backdrop of the California mountains Christmas comes alive in the latest of the Fool’s Gold series from Susan Mallery. Fool’s Gold is the type of town we all wish we belong to with people willing to help and a place where a newcomer can feel at home. But when Evie is brought to the town by her family after breaking her leg she feels more like an outsider than part of the family. The only place she feels at home in on the dance floor so when asked to teacher the children the winter dance she agrees even as she plans her escape from the town after the holidays.

Dante has also been brought to Fool’s Gold against his will by his business partner Rafe (Summer Days #7). With the past that Dante has the best thing he can do with the ladies is love ‘em and leave ‘em and he has gotten good at just that. But when Evie and her troupe dance into Dante’s life will he recognize a good thing and will either of them be willing to overcome the past to believe in love and learn that Fool’s Gold really can be home? Both are unaware that the lure of Fool’s Gold is not only in the spirit of the season but the spirit and heart of the town.

I could not put this book down. This is the 10th in the series and I have loved everyone of them but there is just something extra special about Fool’s Gold at Christmas time. I wanted to walk the streets, see the decorations of the town and watch the performance on Christmas Eve. I wanted to drink peppermint martinis at Evie’s house with the girls and wanted to walk up to Dante and hug him after smacking him upside the head. Mallery has a way of transporting you to the town of Fool’s Gold and as a reader you can feel the love she has for her (unfortunately) imagined town which makes the reader love it to. Pick up “A Fool’s Gold Christmas”, make a cup of hot chocolate, snuggle up on the couch and I promise you in a few hours when you finally set the book down you will be ready to start decorating your house for the holidays.
