Interview with Jennifer James

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Jennifer James to the blog today

Jennifer, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I’m a secret agent living undercover in the Midwest, fighting crime in my fuzzy blue slippers while singing the theme song to Blue’s Clues and making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with the crusts cut off.

Actually, I’m the mother of two, still in college (senior year! Yay!) getting a bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing, have been married to an amazing guy for the past 13 years, and only recently left my job as a dental assistant because my mother became ill. If you’d like a long explanation of why dental floss would be in my “must have” items if I was on a deserted island, I can go on and on.

Or not. *grin*

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Yes, but I don’t think I realized it for a long time. I would mention it to my husband now and then, how I wanted to be an author and he’d say “Go do it then!” but I never finished the stories I’d start on yellow legal pads. I was intimidated and scared by the process of submitting a book, heck, even finishing one. (Which I still think is the hardest part.)

Once I got down to it and realized that the ideas in my head weren’t going away and that people I knew actually liked my stuff, I got down to it and haven’t looked back.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Oh boy. Jeaniene Frost, Ilona Andrews, Karen Marie Moning, Kresley Cole, Lois McMaster Bujold, Anne McCaffery, Kristen Britain, Charlaine Harris, Keri Arthur, Seanan McGuire, Laurell K. Hamilton, Cinda Williams Chima, JoAnne Kenrick, Nalini Singh, Ann Mayburn, Laura Kaye, Sandra Bunino, Tom Winship, and of course my critter gals, (you might not have heard of these ladies yet, but they’re amazing!) Ellie Heller, Eden Summers, Sarah Cass, Mary Terrani, Tonya Cannariato, Sabrina Garie, and Fiona Druce.

That’s a crazy mix of UF, PNR, Sci-Fi and Fantasy with some contemporary romance thrown in for fun. I also like horror novelists like Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Kathryn Meyer Griffin.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

I really love Urban Fantasy. It can range from dark to light, but if you asked me, that’s my favorite genre. But I also love happy endings and romance. So while LOVE KINECTION is a most definitely a contemporary piece, I actually tend to drift to things with paranormal elements.

I have story ideas for books that are more sci-fi and fantasy oriented with only sprinklings of romance in them, so eventually you’ll see more of those in the future. But I think (for me anyway) that the stories form as I go, and I don’t worry about the genre all that much. The story is what it is. I follow it wherever it leads. So I guess I got into this genre mostly by accident.

What are some of your writing rituals?

Depends on how the writing is going. When the book is going well, I plug in my head phones, turn on music, and let my fingers fly over the keyboard.

If it’s not going well, I get out a notebook and write freehand. I will even write letters to my characters to try and get into their “heads” or jog the story.

I’m learning what a terrible distraction the internet can be, so I turn off my wi-fi connection when writing so I have less temptation to surf when I’m stuck in the plot.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

LOVE KINECTION is a contemporary novella with a hurt but snarky heroine and a hunky tech guy hero. They’re both geeks and silly references abound in this book. Abby and Tom have sexual tension to spare, and I never knew what kind of joke was going to come out of their mouths next.

LONG TIME COMING is also a contemporary novella but told from the man’s POV, and much higher on the heat scale. It’s an erotic romance out from Etopia Press. A hot friends to lovers story with a hero (Rob) who is alpha, but sweet and slightly awkward with the heroine Joey in way that just makes you want to see more from those two. I had a blast writing that book.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

It was actually from a submission call from Entangled Publishing. They were looking for Valentine’s Day stories. There were also calls for geek stories and military themes. All those things coalesced in my head to form LOVE KINECTION.  The book was rejected at Entangled, but ultimately sold to Decadent Publishing, and I was paired up with an amazing editor who encouraged me to geek it up.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

Which one? I’m in content editing for a big fat erotic paranormal romance novel called HUNGER EMBRACED (book 1 in a series) and am finishing up book 2 HUNGER UNBOUND. The heroine in those books is funny, snarky, resourceful, and while a vampire, still rather vulnerable. She’s not totally bad ass and superhuman, which I like about her.

I’ve also got a contemporary western started called LUCKY SEVENS, a novella I decided to lengthen out to a full novel called COVERT CRAVING (also a paranormal romance), and a trilogy of werewolf books plotted, waiting in the wings.

What would you be if you were not an author?

Oh, I’d still be dental assisting/wifeing/mothering/studenting. And I guess if I wasn’t authoring I’d be knitting and sewing in my spare time. I like to do those things anyway. I’m a creative sort, so anything I can create with my hands appeals to me.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

ONCE BURNED by Jeaniene Frost. (Gah! But I’m saving it for my victory dance after edits on HUNGER EMBRACED are finished. Love Vlad!)

HOUNDED by Kevin Hearne.

UNHOLY GHOSTS by Stacia Kane.

MAGIC BURNS by Ilona Andrews.

BLACKVEIL by Kristen Britain.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks so much for having me on today. I love to hear from readers, bloogers, and other authors, so don’t be shy! Come stalk my website or FaceBook or Twitter.

Love, romance, hearts, flowers ,cupid…. Rubbish.

Abby Fine still hasn’t gotten over the pain of a year-old betrayal and plans to spend this Valentine’s Day drowning her sorrows with a ménage of men named Ben, Jerry, and Riesling.

Her plans are diverted when she drops and breaks her new iPhone and gives in to a momentary hormone surge, agreeing to let office hottie and tech god Tom Walker squirm his way into her condo to fix it.

Tom shows up with his Xbox, spicy Chinese food, and a habit of stealing kisses every time she lets her guard down.

Can a weekend of laughter, videogames, and movies change Abby’s opinion of stupid Cupid?

Excerpt:

His hands crossed the gap between our bodies and rested on my hips.  Backing away would be the smart thing to do. But hope filled my belly he’d kiss me again. The stupid part of my brain had taken control again, and I didn’t fight it. I wanted a real kiss. “So if you are in fact the geekier geek, what do I get as a forfeit?” he asked.

The shadow of stubble covered his chin and his upper lip, ran up to the short sideburns he wore. His ears begged to be nibbled on. What would that stubble feel like brushed against my skin? Dangerous thoughts, especially since my hands had somehow ended up on his waist and my fingers clenched his shirt. I looked at his arms, still surprised by the size of muscles when they flexed. If the biceps were any indicator of the body hidden under the cloth, it broke the mold of a stereotypical geek’s.

“Forfeit?”

“Yeah. You know, like a prize.”

“I think you already got a forfeit. You got to see me naked.” And all I’ve gotten is a few stolen kisses.

“That was an accident.” He grew hard against my belly. It pleased me to wonder what direction his thoughts had gone. I wondered if ice cream intoxication existed. “How about sex in my truck?”

“No. Car sex isn’t really comfortable. And who said anything about sex?”

“A man can hope. Besides, I know you’ve thought about it.”

“Have not.”

“Have, too.”

“Shut up and kiss me.”

He shook his head. “I promised to behave. You kiss me.”

The Red Serpent Trilogy

Book Summary (condensed)

The Red Serpent Trilogy presents a highly evolved vampire to fear: cold and callous, powerful and dangerous, possessed by mystic promises and destroyed only by silver. It is the year 2021 — the human world has degraded, its inhabitants unworthy of the supernatural gifts bestowed upon them. Compelled by ancient prophesy, an ancient vampire army takes the human race by force, sparing few lives. They await the second coming of their king, Anaxagoras, which will hurl the world into a final battle that will free the vampires from their infinite hiding. But by the hands of fate, there is one human who may save his entire race. The Red Serpent Trilogy is a celestial fusion of science fiction and fantasy, unfolding conflicting intentions for the survival of both the human and vampire races. But in a world ruled by supernatural and mythological forces, there is only room for one race, and neither will go easily. The few survivors of the fatal vampire onslaught escape to an asteroid space station, Regnum, where they thrive as they keep an attentive watch on the vampires on the earth below. But unbeknown to himself or anyone else, Alex, half human half vampire, holds the keys to secrets that will help him realize his duties and cement his fate as either a human or a vampire. The Red Serpent Trilogy Book Summary (full)
“The evils of the World in which Anaxagoras shall come will be caused by the unworthy people of the world. Our race shall come unto the Earth and bravely wage war with them . . .”

In 2021, the Vampires attacked Earth and decimated the human population. After a fierce and bloody battle, war commander John Howe led the forced evacuation of the humans to the gigantic orbiting space station Regnum, and the human refugees have been there ever since.

Then one day, General Howe’s orphan nephew, Alexander, uncovers a terrible secret about his past — and that he may be the subject of prophesy.

“Two decades later, a new kind of evil, a Falsifier, shall come unto the Earth . . .”

The boy’s world is turned upside down when Gareng, the Vampiric General, reveals his own family ties to Alexander. As the two grow closer, Gareng begins to question the wisdom of his people waging Vampiric war on the humans. But Gareng’s own son will stop at nothing to seize control and eliminate the humans once and for all . . .

“There will be a second coming of Anaxagoras, when the sun is blocked by the moon . . .”

After learning his true origins, Alexander finds himself in an impossible situation: he must choose whether his allegiance lies with his mother’s people, or with his father’s — and condemn the other to certain doom.

“In the End of Days, the Falsifier shall challenge Anaxagoras for the fate of the world…”

But migra is thicker than water, and as Alexander embraces his role as Falsifier, he begins to hope that there could be another way.

Can Alexander forge a peace between the two warring factions — could he and Gareng ever convince the Vampires to agree — or will prophecy reach its bloody final chapter as Earth is plunged again into unrelenting war?

Rishabh Jain‘s Bio: (full)

Rishabh Jain was born in the city of Kanpur, in India, in 1990. From a young age, he displayed remarkable traits of creativity and inventiveness. When a young boy of 8 or 9 years old, Rishabh left his father (himself an electrical engineer) shocked and speechless one day, when he managed to make an asymmetrical and unbalanced structure made of blocks, with which he was very fond of playing, stand stable for 2 to 3 minutes, blissfully unaware that the laws of physics and mechanics made it impossible.Rishabh entered Pathways World School in 2003, an International Baccaulaureate School on the outskirts of New Delhi, in the 8th Grade. Here, his multidisciplinary talents and interests blossomed in the creative environment of an International Level School. He was awarded an Academic Merit Scholarship from Pathways World School, for the academic years 2004-05 and 2005-06 (his 9th & 10th Grades). Being an absolutely ardent fan of and enamored by the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Harry Potter series, it was his dream to write a story of his own as a “Trilogy.” This was the inspiration from which he conceived the genesis and plot of this current book The Red Serpent Trilogy, and he finally realized his dream and completed the book in 2006 and was issued the copyright to the same in January of 2007.Rishabh completed his High School (10th Grade) in 2006, with an award of Distinction from IGCSE, Cambridge. He participated in “Harvard Model Congress Asia” (a three-day student conference organized by Harvard University, where selected students were invited from around the world to take part in simulations of the United States Congress) in Bangkok, in September 2006. He also was a participant in Ryan International School’s Indian Model United Nations (INMUN) in 2006, which was a three-day simulation of the United Nations, wherein he received a Certificate of Achievement.

While studying for the International Baccaulaureate Diploma (11th & 12th Grades) in the same school, Rishabh participated in and won 1st prize in two competitions (one for extempore speaking and the other for debate) in VIVUM Bangalore (India). He also built a Bio-Gas plant during a Community Service Project in a village of Rajasthan near Rathambore National Park. Rishabh was democratically elected by the student body for a period of two years (2007 & 2008) as a member of the Student Council (consisting of a total of twelve members representing the whole school) — a most responsible and keenly contested and coveted position.

Due to the peer recognition of his multidisciplinary talents in Creative Writing, English, Literature, and General Knowledge, and his unique ability to relate to people, Rishabh was also elected as the Editor of the Annual School Magazine Rewind. In June 2007, Rishabh participated in “GLOBAL YOUNG LEADERS CONFERENCE” (GYLC) in Washington & New York. This was a global conference, where approximately 200 international students from various countries around the globe were invited to attend. The conference lasted two weeks, with one in Washington and one in New York. He was awarded “Youth Leadership Award” in recognition of meritorious achievement in scholarship, leadership and citizenship.

Due to his exemplary performance in GYLC in 2007, he was invited to attend a week-long program, and as a special guest among a very few selected international students, attended the appointment and swearing-in ceremony of Barack Obama, the 44th President of the USA, in January 2009. After earning his International Baccaulaureate Diploma (11th & 12th Grades) in 2008, from among a large number of offers from various prestigious Universities, Rishabh entered the Mechanical Engineering program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he presently resides and is currently pursuing his engineering degree. Amid his grueling schedule of Engineering studies, Rishabh has almost completed a 2nd book, which is a space science fiction adventure & love story.

Chapter 1
Blessed Mother and Child
The year 2025

It was past young Alex’s bedtime and his mother came by his room to tuck him in. He said to his mother, “Mom, since it’s my birthday, will you tell me a story, please?”

“Yes, dear, I will,” she said sweetly to him, patting his back as he lay down on his bed, and she tucked him in. “This is a legend about a world different from ours. It was a world filled with people like us, and was bigger than the Monolith of Faith, and had a great big round shape.”

Alex’s eyes widened; he had never known of anything bigger than the Monolith of Faith. It was the largest monument in his world.

“It had large amounts of water, which separated places as big as our world. The people there were many, who dwelled in peace and harmony, until one day flying humans, the vampires, killed them and took over their world.”

“Mommy,” interrupted Alex, “What are vampires?”

“They’re these monstrous creatures, who have long teeth and—”

“As long as my teeth?”

“No, even longer.” Alex was perplexed. Everyone at his school made fun of him because of his long teeth, but now he was amazed that there were people who had longer teeth than his. Unfortunately, such people existed only in his mother’s myths and legends, not in real life. “Anyway, they also were able to use powers, which burned the trees, and kill humans by drinking their blood.”

“Wait a minute, what are trees?” he asked in confusion.

“They are like O2s*,” answered Minerva.

“Are they still alive?” asked Alex curiously.

“Yes, they are,” said his mother, with anger and sadness in her eyes.

“What happened to the other humans?”

“Go to bed, it is too late now,” she said in a hushed voice, and then kissed him on the forehead.

* In Alex’s world, the trees were given a special name due to their extraordinary properties.

Interview with Charles Johnson

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Charles Johnson to the blog today.

Charles, please tell us about your current release.

For the millions of singles around the world who have struggled to find the right one or to maintain a lasting relationship, my book, “How to Find the Right One & Make it Last,” provides a tutorial on the lost art of dating.  “How to Find the Right One and Make it Last: Bring Love and Romance Back to Dating” offers practical advice for both men and women about how to initiate interaction as well as how to respond in various dating situations.

In addition to the book, I created a website,  http://www.AskCharlesJohnson.com, where my readers can have easy access to relationship advice and personal coaching at any time.

I have been officially and unofficially helping clients and colleagues find personal success. Over the years, I have developed a proven set of principles and concepts that have helped singles looking for love not only find their ideal life partner, but also to keep the relationship fresh and thriving.

Over the years, I have watched my colleagues work incredibly hard to achieve professional success, but often struggle to find that same level of success in their personal lives. By applying the same discipline from their professional development to fine-tuning their dating skills, these colleagues transformed their lives and found the personal fulfillment that had previously been so elusive.

My book provides step-by-step guidance starting with how an individual can make small changes in their personal style and appearance or to their daily routine to improve the odds of finding their ideal partner. I walk readers through the first call, planning the perfect date, and what to say and do on the date.  Everything first starts with a clear idea of what each individual is looking for – as well as what they’re not – to provide a guide along the way.

The principles don’t stop once a match has been made.  The book provides advice for nurturing relationships for the long run.  By walking readers through the seven phases of relationships, I explain how and why they change over time and how to keep them growing strong.

I draw on personal experience, primary research, and the stories of more than 500 singles I’ve connected and 118 who I’ve helped marry and continue to help. I’ve have peppered their stories throughout the book to highlight the principles in action.

Also included is a chapter to help unravel the mystery of Internet dating sites. I outline practical guidance on how to get the most out of the Internet dating site as well as what to be weary of when using the various sites.

Can you tell us about the journey that led you to write your book?

As a corporate senior executive I had the responsibility of taking new young talent and developing them into executives. For 15 years, I groomed hundreds of men and women in the boardroom and thought them the principals that would help them achieve all their professional and financial goals. I was honored and enjoyed mentoring them and watched their careers grow. But, I discovered, as my successful executives matured they would turn to me for guidance in their personal lives. Most of them who were in their early 30’s had achieved all their financial goals but lacked a personal life and wanted someone special with whom they could share their life. Many of them had been so focused on building their professional skills that they lacked the social and personal skills required to connect with someone special. That was the beginning of my unofficial matchmaking business. Over the years, I mentored my up and coming executives and helped them first determine what to look for in a partner and then helped them execute a plan of action. I would run social scenarios and conduct role-play to help them become more confident in social environments. I’ve worked with over 500 people and been able to connect and help marry 118 couples. And, to this day I continue to help the couples to keep their relationship alive and fresh.

When I left the corporate world five years ago, many of the people I mentored and their friends still called for guidance. I decided to write a book that would help everyone in similar situations to give them a starting point to change their personal life and give them a road-map to “How to Find the Right One & Make it Last.”

Can you tell us about the story behind your book cover?

I wanted to have the book cover to convey an emotion in people. We wanted the book cover to convey passion and we chose the burnt orange as the color for the cover of the book because it’s the color of fire.

What book on the market does yours compare to? How is your book different?

I cannot think of a book that is anything like the book I’ve written. In my years of mentoring and matchmaking I found that there was nothing in the market that gave single people practical tools and a step-by-step guide in how to find the right person and make their relationships last. I found that many professional adults needed to learn the skills and gain the confidence that would improve their dating prospects and I don’t believe there is anything in the market to help them. That’s part of the reason I decided to write the book. Finding the right person that will be a life partner is a process and no author has ever written about that process.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I am a retired Air Force and senior vice president from the corporate world. My writing style and quirk is my ability to write in a very conversational and relatable manner.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening?

I’m on page 32 where I describe how one can meet quality people by taking a dance class. People always wonder where they can meet new people who can be potential partners. I always tell my clients to change their routine. One way to do that is to take a dance class in your local community college or dance studio.

Do you plan any subsequent books?

I am currently working on a workbook that will be an extension of “How to Find the Right One & Make it Last!”

I am also working on a teen book based on a similar topic.

Tell us what you’re reading at the moment and what you think of it?

I am re-reading “You Can Heal Your Life,” by Louise Hay. The book gives people great insight into how they can change their life and make it the life they always imagined. It helped me re-invent my life and myself after leaving corporate America. Using the principles in Hay’s book, I have been able to take my experience from my military and corporate life and show people how to be successful in their personal lives and relationships.

Charles Johnson’s Bio:

Charles always focused more on the whole person and how to help those who worked with and around him find balance and achieve both personal and professional success. He found that he was helping people not only get well-deserved promotions or the financial recognition for their work, but he also helped them identify and realize what makes them happy.

Helping others create a life and a lifestyle where their happiness is a priority and life balance is the primary goal became Charles’ new life work. He became a certified life coach and author and has dedicated himself to helping single people find and select the right life and marriage partners and make it last.

Charles has connected and helped hundreds of couples find marriage or committed partners and coaches them on how to make relationships last. He has been married for more than 33 years and three of his four daughters are now married.

Charles has found happiness and balance in his own life as well, pursuing his passions as an avid traveler, photography enthusiast, art collector and a supporter of various charitable causes. How to Find the Right One & Make It Last! Book Summary

We all want that special someone in our lives. But isn’t it odd that one of life’s most important lessons tends to receive the least amount of focus. It’s no wonder why we have so little success attracting the love, passion, romance and fun that we all need and desire.

The problem for many busy and successful people is that they do not know where to find and meet the right partners, how to approach dating, or what it takes to build and sustain a healthy, loving relationship. To address these issues, I have taken a unique approach and have written this book about real people, like you, who struggle with finding love and the right companionship. Many who have used my techniques have been able to find happy rewarding relationships.

This book provides real world experiences and proven dating strategies and techniques. It’s a guide that can be used to change your life and bring you the romance and love you’ve always wanted.

Excerpt:
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

Many people are unsuccessful in finding the “right partner” because they do not know what they are looking for in a partner. They have not spent enough time clearly defining what traits, characteristics, or features they prefer their future partner to have. Equally—if not more importantly—people also need to decide which traits they do not want in a potential partner. Let me introduce you to my friend Michael, who found himself frustrated and wondering about his future and finding the right person.

Michael had just completed graduate school in Texas. He was handsome, smart, well dressed, and equipped with a master’s degree in hospital administration from one of Texas’s most prestigious universities and a new high-paying job in Tulsa, Oklahoma. One night not long after graduation, Michael found himself with his old college buddies in a local bar, enjoying a night of drinks and hoping to find a great woman to be with.

After Michael surveyed the bar scene, he quickly realized this could end up being his daily personal life going forward. He had already achieved great scholastic and initial career success but found his life lacking in the personal area. He started talking to himself, saying, “Am I going to spend the rest of my life looking at barflies, hoping to find the right woman to complete my life and raise a family with?” Michael suddenly became depressed and quickly realized he was going to have to put some serious time into his personal life if he was going to escape the life of a single professional who cruised the bars nightly, looking for someone special. He knew he needed to sit down and determine exactly what he was looking for in a woman and where best to find her.

He did not want just anyone; he wanted someone special to love and spend the rest of his life with. Michael knew he wasn’t about to find that kind of woman in the bars he and his friends frequented. Michael identified the traits and qualities that were important to him and ended up getting back together with his college sweetheart. He realized that she had everything he was looking for. He married her after recognizing she would complete his dreams, love him faithfully, enhance his life, and build the family he imagined.

The moral of this story is quite simple: Michael took the time to discover what he didn’t want, which made it much easier to determine what he did want in a partner—and then he could make the right decision in his selection.

So many people make the mistake of trying to find the right partner before they determine what they are really looking for. You have to start by doing a little homework—nothing too difficult or time-consuming but something that will improve your search and selection efforts by at least tenfold. With that kind of increase in your chances for success, isn’t it worth doing a little up-front work? You do it all the time in your job, so why not do it in your personal life as well?

Dawn’s Desire

For centuries, the immortals knows as the Dragon Kings have hidden their shapeshifting powers from the world. But when a mortal enemy threatens to expose them, the warrior Banan must leave his secret lair in the Highlands, risk his life for the dragons within – and resist the temptations of human love…

Jane Holden has never considered herself beautiful. But when the impossibly handsome Banan casts his gaze upon her, smoldering with sensuality, she feels like the sexiest woman on earth. Banan, however, is a man on a mission. He refuses to succumb to this modern woman’s charms – or his own desires. Two of his warrior brethren have already surrendered to forbidden love. But as the danger closes in, Banan realizes that he needs to possess Jane – mind, body, and soul. For she is more than his match.

She is his destiny…

Excerpt:

Jane Holden twisted her ankle as she stepped onto the elevator. “Damn,” she muttered and leaned a shoulder against the wall so she could take her weight off the injured ankle.

“Beautiful shoes.”

For the first time, Jane realized she wasn’t alone. She looked over at the blond beauty and realized who she was.“You’re Elena Griffin. I’m glad you’re back, and so very sorry about Sloan. It was such a tragic event.”

Elena’s smile was forced, but Jane didn’t hold it against her. She’d been through a traumatic experience in that awful mountain in the Highlands of Scotland.

“You’re from the States as well?” Elena asked, her sage green eyes kind.

Jane looked at the floor to hid her embarrassment over her clumsiness and tenderly put some weight on her ankle. She wasn’t surprised Elena hadn’t noticed her before. No one ever noticed her unless she was being her usual klutzy self.

Whereas Elena was stunning, and literally stopped men in their tracks with her wavy blond hair and green eyes, Jane was plain. She’d prayed as a little girl that she would grow out of the nickname Plain Jane, but she’d not been so fortunate.

Her features were too stark, her eyes too large, and her lips too full. Her hair was an awful shade of auburn. It was almost as if couldn’t decide to be brown or red.

Jane cleared her throat when she realized she hadn’t answered. “Yes. Seattle, actually.”

“What brings you to London?”

She was wondering how to answer Elena when the elevator stopped and the doors opened. Jane stayed in the back corner as Elena stepped onto the top floor of PureGems and was immediately surrounded by people.

Jane watched her for a moment. She envied how easily Elena was around people. It wasn’t until the doors began to close that Jane leaped forward to stop them and dropped her armful of papers in the process.

Her body prevented the doors from closing as she hastily gathered the spilled papers and straightened. She swallowed and smiled when she realized everyone was staring at her with a mixture of laughter and horror.

Jane was forever doing stupid things. Apparently, being a klutz had been programed into her DNA. Her mother had often joked that it took skill to fall on a flat surface, which Jane did often.

All Jane knew was that it was mortifying.

She straightened her pencil skirt with her free hand and walked to her desk praying she made it without incident. After plopping the mound of papers on her desk, she sat down with a sigh.

Banan

Banan has never had a problem using humans to help further hide the Dragon Kings. Not once has he ever thought twice about lying regarding who he was to get what he wants. After all, he’d been one of the Kings who had fought to save mankind.

But all that changes the moment he sees Jane Holden. It’s his duty to get close to her and discover any secrets she might have regarding the Kings, but when her life is threatened, Banan doesn’t hesitate to save her. Or show her who he really is.

Interview with Celeste Hall

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Celeste Hall to the blog today

Celeste, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I’ve always been an adventurer and a daydreamer. I would make up elaborate games with treasure maps and story plots (Indiana Jones style) for my siblings to play as a child. Later I gained mobility with horses and cars, which let me vanish into the wilderness for weeks at a time.

I may have grown up, but I held onto that daydreaming little girl inside. I still love a good adventure, traveling all over the world to meet new people and explore places I’ve read about in books.

When I write, I always strive to take my readers along on a voyage of one kind or another. Delving into fantasy, mystery, romance and suspense with the same passions I employ in my own life.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I’ve always loved books and writing. As a child I wrote longhand, filling up dozens of notebooks and dairies with my stories, poems and exploits. I never really planned on publishing any of them, but life has a funny way of nudging us into roles we might not otherwise have taken.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

I have a very eclectic taste in books, but my favorites will always be the stories that either scare me or seduce me. I love Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Nora Roberts, Suzanne Brockmann and so many other fabulous writers. It’s hard to say which have influenced me the most. I suspect my writing style matured from a wide diversity of books I’ve read throughout my life as well as the experiences I’ve had.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

I primarily write romance novels, but I’ve completed dozens of other stories throughout the years. A couple have made it onto library shelves, but the majority will probably gather dust in the closet until I find the time to go back through them and give each a proper editing session.

What are some of your writing rituals?

I don’t have any rituals per se, other than keeping a full pot of coffee handy. I also utilize a variety of different construction techniques, depending on the type of story I’m writing and how inspired I might be at the time. Some days I just sit down and the words flow out onto the page as fast as I can type, while other days I have to write out storyboards for motivation and an outline to follow.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Last month I published Blood Seductions: Gavin, which is the first book in a spinoff series from my popular Dream Seduction line. The stories follow a group of Incubus and Vampires, which are normally enemies, as they are gathering together to fight against an evil unlike anything they’ve ever seen before.

This month I’m releasing Secret Admirer, a fun contemporary romance about a girl that receives an array of very frightening letters and acquires the protection of a very sexy bodyguard.

I also plan to publish the next book in the Dream Seduction line this summer, as well as a couple more contemporary romances, so stay tuned!

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

I gain my inspiration from a variety of sources, most of which stem from my own life experiences and wild imagination. I’ll have a dream (or a nightmare) and it will stick with me until I get it down on paper. Other times it will be an event, or person I’ve met, someone who just begs to have their personality captured and shared with the world.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’ve recently started completing stories for a variety of anthologies, largely suspense or romance collections, but they won’t be coming out until early next year. Never fear, my wonderful followers will have plenty to read in the meantime. I currently have three completed novels I plan to release this year, and another three that are in progress.

Keep an eye on my webpage for excerpts and information on Secret Admirer, which will be coming out this month. Dream Seductions: All the Queen’s Men, which will be published in July. And Passionate Creatures, which I plan to release in August.

What would you be if you were not an author?

As a round cheeked and dimpled little girl I used to pray every day for a horse and a cow. I really wanted to be a cowgirl when I grew up. I dreamed of wide open places and endless skies.

I suppose I still yearn for those things. Someday I hope to have a big ranch out in some wonderfully remote and beautiful location. But I’m sure I’d still find myself driven to write. That’s simply who I am, and what I’ve always loved.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’m currently halfway through E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. As soon as I’ve finished these, I plan to read Deadlocked, by Charlaine Harris. I get a huge kick out of reading her books and then watching the True Blood series to make fun of their adaptations. I do the same thing with the Game of Thrones series so I’ve been forbidden from watching either show with my friends. =)

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I just want to add a quick thank you to all of my friends and followers alike. You’ve all made such a huge impact on my life. I would never have made it this far without such a wonderful support group!

For those that are new to my writing, I’d love to talk to you about what you’d like to see more or less of in my stories. I hope you’ll all feel free to drop by and share your opinions or suggestions!

Guest Blog with Victoria Roberts & giveaway

I’d like to thank Books-n-Kisses for having me today. It’s great to emerge from my writing cave upon occasion.

What type of research goes into writing historical romances?

The type of research conducted for writing historical romances depends much upon what the author is aiming for. Perhaps the story is only going to be told during a certain timeframe and setting i.e. England, 1705. In this situation, the author would want to research England in the early 1700’s. What happened during that timeframe? What politics were involved? What was life like in those days? What was the dress? What was the landscape like? All of this is necessary in order to set the stage for the author’s tale.

Some authors weave actual historical events into their stories. In those cases, rest assured, there’s much more research involved.

While doing research for Temptation in a Kilt, I kept thinking in the back of my mind that I did not want to give readers a history lesson. Don’t get me wrong. King James was indeed King James I of England, and the MacGregors and Campbells did have a turbulent past. Whereas Archibald Campbell, the seventh Earl of Argyll did exist, Laird Ciaran MacGregor did not. I remember my eyes glazing over in history class as the professor lectured about something I didn’t care a darned thing about. Reading provides escape for us all.

I truly love Scotland and try to be respectful of its heritage. With Highlanders, it was very important for me to get the details right i.e. the colors on the clan tartan. And Ciaran’s kilt on the front cover is definitely the MacGregor kilt. If I didn’t do my homework, the MacGregors and Campbells would’ve been waving some other clan’s tartan. It would’ve been an injustice to both clans had I not done the research.

So how much research is involved in writing historical romance depends on the author and what he/she is writing. As I look around my office surrounded by my favorite romance novels, Scottish castles, Highlander books, Scottish customs, and too much Scottish paraphernalia to name, I believe a good author researches and draws a fine line between reality and fiction.

Thank you so much for having me today! Happy Reading!

Kimberly’s review of Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood

TITLE: Sweet Talk
AUTHOR: Julie Garwood
PUBLICATION DATE:   08/07/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
When FBI agent Grayson Kincaid first encounters Olivia MacKenzie, she makes quite an impression. The beautiful, tough, young attorney has stumbled into the middle of an FBI sting operation and has reduced it to chaos. Months of surveillance and careful planning down the drain, Kincaid’s partner is furious and lets Olivia know that she’s ticked off the wrong guy. After all, he’s FBI. Olivia isn’t intimidated by his partner’s bullying because she’s something even scarier…she’s IRS. And working for the IRS isn’t for the faint of heart. She’s on the trail of an elaborate Ponzi scheme, one that threatens to ruin the lives of naive and unsuspecting victims, and one she has personal reasons to be angry about. But after she asks questions of the wrong people, her life is suddenly endangered. She’s accustomed to fighting for the underdog but being vulnerable herself is a very different story. Smart enough to know when to call for reinforcements, she contacts Grayson Kincaid. Together they make an excellent team to fight corruption but Olivia is also fighting the immediate and intense attraction she feels for Agent Kincaid, and that may be a battle she is bound to lose.

REVIEW:
If Julie Garwood released a new book every day I still do not believe I would get tired of reading her books. I have enjoyed all of Garwood’s works from her romantic suspense to her historicals and this book is no exception. Garwood has a way of pulling you in right from the first paragraph and you never want to leave the world that she has weaved.

I really enjoyed Olivia. She is strong and independent. She has been through a life that most of us cannot even imagine and has come out stronger and wiser for it. I love that she becomes an advocate for what she never had and is willing to do what ever needs to be done to protect “her kids” and yet her greatest indulgences are popsicles and a little white dress. Grayson is perfect. He is sexy, protective and even cooks and cleans up. What more could a woman want in a man? I enjoyed the secondary characters as well. I hope Garwood has ideas for books for these characters (Do I see a Collins/Ronan book in the works? hint hint) and I can’t wait to read about Samantha and Jane as well. And Henry, adorable Henry, can he just morph into a 25 year old so we can read his story too?

Garwood is one of my favorite authors and this book is right up there with all her others. Garwood has never written a book that is not worth reading and once you start you can not stop reading her books. While I miss the Buchanan series and hope she works back into that group since there are still siblings we need to see married off. I have enjoyed the new works she has had lately just as much as that series. The one thing wrong with this book? It ended and now I have to wait a year (or so) for the next one to come out.

Kimberly’s review of The Booby Trap by Anne Browning Walker

TITLE: The Booby Trap
AUTHOR: Anne Browning Walker
PUBLICATION DATE:   06/01/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Welcome to The Booby Trap, a seedy bar where waitresses’ skirts are high, necklines are low and customers show up for the eye candy.

When brainy, beautiful, Harvard Ph.D. candidate Bambi Benson wants to study the women of the the Booby Trap for her dissertation, she goes undercover and joins them. All is going well for Bambi until handsome local celebrity Trip Whitley enters the scene.

Hoping to shock his high-society family by dating a bimbo, Trip offers to pay Bambi to pretend to be his girlfriend. She accepts his offer and bides her time, waiting for the right moment to reveal her true identity and teach Trip not to judge based on appearances.

After a series of dates carefully orchestrated for their publicity value, Bambi’s trap is set. But there’s one problem: the predator might have fallen in love with her prey.

REVIEW:
This was a great read. It was funny and touching at the same time. I enjoyed the characters of both Bambi and Trip very much. The story was very well written and really had me wanting to read more and more.

I loved the fact that Bambi was going to teach Trip a lesson about assuming how someone is based on looks and a job but she had done the exact same thing with Trip. I would have enjoyed reading more about their dates since they were just brushed over in some ways. I do wish the author had maybe shown a little more romance, not chemistry but romance, between the characters but this really was a adorable book to read.

According to the back of the story this is the authors first novel and I must say I think she has a bright future in front of her and I can not wait to read another book by her.

Kelly’s review of Primal Possession by Katie Rues

TITLE: Primal Possession – Moon Shifters #2
AUTHOR: Katie Rues
PUBLICATION DATE:  9/4/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
To protect her, he will unleash the beast within…

As his pack’s second-in-command, lupine shifter Liam Armstrong gives orders and takes what he wants—until he meets red-headed, blue-eyed December McIntyre. Liam knows the human beauty is his intended mate the moment he sees her, but December is far too strong-willed to accept his protection.

December, whose brother is the town sheriff, has every reason to mistrust shifters after one killed her youngest sibling. But the forceful and handsome Liam has gotten under her skin in a way she hadn’t thought possible, and the desire she feels for him is almost too much to bear.

When a radical hate group targets all humans known to sympathize with paranormal beings, December is attacked in her bookstore. Reluctantly, she turns to the only one who can help her: Liam. And he is going to take her to places within herself she never knew existed

REVIEW:
Welcome back to the Moon Shifter world.  I know that I was very happy to be back in it.  If you have not read Alpha Instinct I would highly recommend you read it first.  You could read Primal Possession, but so much happens in Alpha Instinct to set up for Primal Possession.

I loved Liam in Alpha Instinct, and was super excited to read his book.  Liam is the second (well third, after his Alpha and his Alpha’s Mate) in command of the newly formed Armstrong-Cordona pack and he has finally found his mate.  But that is where things get a little tricky, December is human and well she is not very fond of shifters.  Liam is determined to win her over no matter what.   But with two attempts on December’s life Liam has his hands full.  Protecting her from his enemies and trying to win over her stubborn heart.

December is determined to not fall for Liam.   But as with all best laid plans they don’t always work out just right.  When December is attached after a failed date she know that only person that can protect her is Liam.  But this means she has to be close to him and being close to him make her crazy, crazy about him and what she wants for the future.
Really loved this book.  Loved seeing the softer side of Liam even if he tries to messed it all up.  I am looking forward to what is next in the Moon Shifter series.  I loved learning more about secondary characters Kat and her now ex Jayce.  These two are going to be so much fun to read about.

Kimberly’s review of The Bloodgate Warrior by Joely Sue Burkhart

TITLE: The Bloodgate Warrior
AUTHOR: Joely Sue Burkhart
PUBLICATION DATE:   08/06/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
As the Mayan hero Técun lay dying, a sorceress cast a spell tying her bloodline to him, so that one day he could return and avenge their people…
Following a near-death experience, Cassandra Gonzales is haunted by erotic dreams of a mysterious man. As the dreams intensify, she is compelled to travel to Guatemala in search of him. There she learns that her blood has opened a gate—and she is the only one who can bring the great warrior back from the afterlife.
Once faced with Técun in the flesh, Cassie fears the need he stirs within her. She aches to submit to the pleasure he promises, but first she must learn to trust in him, and in her own desires. Their time for sensual exploration is brief—Técun’s killer has escaped, intent on sacrificing Cassie and wreaking havoc on the world. Now, only Cassie’s complete and willing surrender to Técun will give him the power to defeat the demon once and for all…

REVIEW:
First let me say I have not read a lot of time travel books so I am not sure if this is common for most of this genre but it seemed so unbelievable. I know that time travel does not really happen but when I read a book I want to believe it can come true. I was unsure if I could buy the whole going all the way to a different country to find a man who is only in my dreams just to have him come through some gate in a cave but when the zombie came out I was beyond enjoying this book.

I was not too thrilled with the writing style of the book. First it was written in the first person which really did not seem to fit the story somehow. Also it seemed that Tecun was using Cassie more than was there for her. They did not have a connection at all. In one of the chapters one of the characters says “It’s like a bad B-movie” and I have to say I felt like the whole book was like that. But if you like B-movies, time travel, warriors and zombies this might just be the book for you.

Kimberly’s review of Eliza’s Awakening by Zaide Bishop

TITLE: Eliza’s Awakening
AUTHOR: Zaide Bishop
PUBLICATION DATE:   07/23/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
It is the eve of the Longest Night. Eliza Baker and the rest of Lord Jayden’s servants excitedly prepare for the lavish festival as their masters enjoy a head start on the debauchery that awaits. Eliza’s madly in love with Kell, a sweet, deliciously sexy guard. Kell returns her feelings, but is striving to make himself a worthy man before he asks Eliza’s father for permission to court her.

To keep the Demon of Winter at bay, an offering must be made during the festival. As the event begins, Lord Kempsly informs Kell that he’s offering a special sacrifice this year, and Kell must escort the girl who will offer up her maidenhood for the enjoyment of the crowd. Another guest will select the maiden, and Kell realizes to his dismay the guest is Lord Rakin, a rich and handsome rogue who has his eye on Eliza. But little do any of the men suspect the burgeoning desire the ceremony is awakening in Eliza.

REVIEW:
This is a short story (about 35 reading pages) of historical erotica. It is set at a party to bring in the new season and they plan to make a virgin sacrifice of her maidenhead not her life. If you enjoy erotica about exhibitionism and voyeurism then you will enjoy this story. There is a nice back story of characters. If you like short stories of erotica you will enjoy this book.
