Dating and Other Dangers by Natalie Anderson

Writers often get asked which is their favourite of their own books. This is, usually, an impossible question often likened to being asked to name a favourite child. And generally it is impossible – when I think of each of my books there are things that make me smile about all of them—I love all my characters.

But some stories are definitely easier than others to get onto the page and a very, very few (in my experience) are pure joy from start to finish. Dating and Other Dangers falls into that category for me.

The idea came to me in a flash one night after I’d had a phonecall with my editor. I needed to come up with an idea for a new story fast. I’ve always been net-addicted—reading the news, and I’ve always found forums and social media fascinating (not to mention terrifying). I’d read about some online dating reputation websites and thought this was a very interesting thing. What if I had a heroine who ran such a forum? And what if the hero was one of the guys dissed on that forum?

So I came up with a hero (an extremely successful corporate lawyer) who’s become ‘internetorious’ – labelled as a shameless seducer of women, arrogant and apparent believer that he’s ‘god’s gift’. Ordinarily he’d laugh it off (after all, its only the internet and ‘there’s a lot of rubbish out there’), but he realises those most dearest to him actually believe it of him too and it hits a nerve. So he tracks down the ‘hell hath no fury’ woman behind the website. He threatens to sue (and expose) our heroine as the woman behind the forum. She’s an HR assistant (‘making more people’s lives hell’ in his opinion) and doesn’t want her online persona and her real life to collide – not yet anyway. But she stands up to him, pointing out that the defence to defamation is truth. So he decides to ‘prove’ to her he isn’t that shameless seducer… and she’s to prove this by going on three dates with him.

So it’s a battle of the dates and a battle of the blogs as well—the rest of the internet is ablog about it and their hits go sky high.

But the problems arise when my once bitten, seventy-seven times shy heroine is beyond attracted to the super seducer who’s now playing it so snakily straight… what’s a girl to do?

Writing their blog entries was absolutely hilarious and the story just flowed as I got Nadia and Ethan tangled up in their online battles and real world desires… I hope you find the story fun too!

Nadia Keenan’s first date Do’s and Don’ts:

1. Do boost your confidence by looking hot

2Don’t put out until at lease date two

3. If the man is trouble (however sexy!) do report all on www.WomanBWarned.com

After being trashed on Nadia’s website, serial dater-and-dumper Ethan Rush is about to put Nadia’s rules to the test. He’s determined to change her mind about him. She’s determined to prove him for the cad he is.

Let the battle of the dates begin…

Kelly’s review of Blaze by Joan Swan

TITLE: Blaze – Phoenix Rising #2
AUTHOR: Joan Swan
PUBLICATION DATE: 09/25/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The hotter they come, the harder they fall…

With a man like him, every mission becomes personal…
Ever since FBI agent Keira O’Shay started tracking a young boy named Mateo, she’s felt a connection even her empathic abilities can’t explain. She needs to save Mateo from the cult leader holding him hostage. Nothing can interfere with that—not even the reappearance of Luke Ransom, the hot-as-hell fire captain she’s regretted walking out on for three long years.

Losing Keira left Luke vulnerable—in every way. When they were together, the powers each possesses were mysteriously enhanced. But it’s the sexy, surprising woman beneath the tough exterior that Luke’s really missed. Even if she betrayed him utterly. And even if agreeing to help her uncover a government conspiracy means watching his life and his heart go up in flames again

REVIEW:
Blaze is book 2 in Joan Swan’s Phoenix Rising series.  Blaze is grabs you from the page one and keeps you turning the pages until the end.  You will want to scream at the characters and then reach for the tissues, root for the characters and then want to slap them upside the head.  There are some surprising turns of events that will shape the next few books in this series.  New characters from the past walk into the team’s life and will change the fabric of who they all are. But even with this the team is left with more questions than answers as to who and what really happened to them.

I loved Luke in FEVER and loved him more in BLAZE.  Luke is just an all around great guy.  He loves his friends, family and can’t let go of the love of his life.  He is willing to go the extra mile to do anything to keep her, but will even that be enough to winner her back?

Keira has had a very rough life and she is always ready to cut and run the minute life starts closing.  The only constant in her life has been her love for Luke.  But she even throw that away.  But when Luke pops back into her life she is not sure if she can turn him away again, but is she strong enough to face the demons of her past in order to move on and live her life with Luke?

Luke & Kiera find themselves thrown together in order to save a group of kids from a madman.  Little do they know the journey that they are about to go on and how one little boy will change everything for all of them.

Joan is such a great writer.  I love how she tugs at my heartstrings the whole way through this book.  Like any good author she loves to make us as readers suffer all the emotional highs and lows that she can.    If you enjoyed FEVER you will love BLAZE!! I am very much looking forward to want is next in the Phoenix Rising series.

Kimberly’s review of The Uninvited by Heather Graham

TITLE: The Uninvited
AUTHOR: Heather Graham
PUBLICATION DATE:   08/28/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
1777: In the throes of the Revolutionary War, Landon Mansion is commandeered by British Lord “Butcher” Bedford. He stabs Lucy Tarleton—who spurned his king and his love—leaving her to die in her father’s arms.NOW: After the day’s final tour, docent Allison Leigh makes her rounds while locking up…and finds a colleague slumped over Bedford’s desk, impaled on his own replica bayonet.

Resident ghosts may be the stock-in-trade of stately Philadelphia homes, but Allison—a noted historian—is indignant at the prospect of “ghost hunters” investigating this apparent murder.

Agent Tyler Montague knows his hauntings and his history. But while Allison is skeptical of the newcomer, a second mysterious murder occurs. Has “Butcher” Bedford resurfaced? Or is there another malevolent force at work in Landon Mansion? Wary, yet deeply attracted, Allison has to trust in Tyler and work with him to discover just what uninvited guest—dead or alive—has taken over the house.

Or their lives could become history!

REVIEW:
4 ½ Stars. I have always enjoyed Heather Graham’s ghost stories and this one is no exception. Actually I think it is the best one she has written lately, even though I love all of them. I am hearing this is the last of Graham’s Krewe of Hunters series. No one writes a ghost story like Graham does. Besides the ghosts who take on a life of their own (pun intended) the fact that Graham writes with so much history is what astounds me. By the time the reader is done with the book they actually want to travel to the city to take in the sites and read a book about the history of the area. There is no better travel agent then Graham when she writes a novel.

I really enjoyed the story of Allison and Tyler. They are written with such chemistry right from the start. While there is no real hostility when they first met, as I read in the last Graham book, there was just a underlying uncertainty about the other person and I think that comes off better when you read it. I loved the ghost Julian in the story as well. The history of the house and Philadelphia is also really  interesting.

If you love a ghost story with a bit of suspense than Graham should be your first choice of authors. And as always with her books I never figure out who did it.

*Note: The ARC I received was slightly different from this description. The house was named the Tarleton-Dandrige House not the Landon Mansion and the “Butcher” Bedford was actually named Brian “Beast” Bradley. I am unsure if the characters were changed or the synopsis is incorrect.

Night Thief

Night Series #1.5 (novella)

By Lisa Kessler
Order here: Amazon
Blurb:
After the fall of the Mayan civilization, Kane, an immortal Night Walker, has taken refuge in France for over 800 years. The modern world holds little interest for him until the night he meets the Golden Thief and is robbed of much more than his pocket watch.Marguerite Rousseau is living a double life. By day she is the assistant to an eccentric French artist, Antoine Berjon, and by night she dons elegant evening gowns to woo French dignitaries before lifting their wallets.Sparks ignite when Kane captures the thief, but Marguerite harbors a dark secret that could ruin them both.
Excerpt:
He knew the second she entered the ballroom.  The sound of her laughter floated over the string quartet that played in the corner. Kane spun round, and his heart clenched. Her smile stopped time, and for a moment, the rest of the world ceased to exist. He resisted the urge to shove the other dancers away to get to her.

He couldn’t be too eager or the rabbit might flee.

Deep in the shadows of his soul, his spirit animal stirred. Kane halted for a moment, surprised at the awakening of the jungle cat. It had been decades since he last allowed himself to shift into his jaguar spirit. To feel it so close to the surface unsettled him.

When she approached him, her gaze demanded his attention. Tonight, he’d purposefully worn his finest rings and his favorite ruby-studded gold pocket watch.  His wealth would draw her to him like the moths ached to drink in the candle’s firelight.
Or so he’d hoped.

He bowed his head slightly. “Would you honor me with this dance?”

She placed her warm fingers into his hand. Her sapphire eyes sparkled up at him. “It would be my pleasure, Monsieur.”
His heart made a curious jump when he gripped her fingertips and guided her to the center of the ballroom. He placed his hand on her corseted waist and led her into a waltz.

They circled with the music, her footsteps following his lead. Her body moved with the music as if she were part of the melody filling the room. Before he realized it, he’d lost himself in the dance, in her.

Her full, rose-colored lips begged to be kissed, and her golden curls brushed over the swell of her breasts. His fingers yearned to touch her soft skin.

His gaze slid along her jaw and down the length of her neck. She wore an elaborately jeweled velvet choker that hid her pulse from him. Definitely for the best.

As the music reached its final cadence, he bowed to her and lifted her hand to press a kiss to the back of her knuckles. “A pleasure to dance with you.”

A smile tugged at her lips, and her cheeks flushed with color. “The pleasure was mine, Monsieur.”

He released her fingertips and watched her turn to leave. Kane frowned and straightened his shirt, rubbing at the scar hidden beneath the fabric before he could stop himself. This woman had a strange effect over him. His watch still dangled from his vest. She hadn’t taken the bait.

“Forgive me.” She stopped and turned toward him again, her smile paralyzing him. “I do not even know your name.”

She stared into his eyes for a moment, and he toyed with the idea of peering into her mind, but decided against it. This female was a delicious puzzle he would enjoy solving. Slowly.

She offered her hand. “I am Marguerite Rousseau.”

He looked up at her while he kissed the back of her skilled hand. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Marguerite. I am Kane Bordeaux.”

He straightened without releasing her hand. “Who is the lucky gentleman you were rushing away to see?”

She laughed and shook her head. “There is no man I wish to see.” She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “I am parched and in search of good wine.”

Kane placed her hand at the crook of his arm. “Allow me?”

“Oui.” She punctuated her response with a flirtatious tilt of her head.

He led her through the dancers, toward the wine and assorted bread and cheeses that decorated the table at the far end of the ballroom.

“Our host has been most gracious tonight.” Kane filled a glass with wine and watched as she placed cheese and bread on her plate, and the tiny silver cheese tongs into her satchel.

Not only clever and quick, but brazen.

He handed her a wineglass when she turned toward him. Nothing in her demeanor betrayed nervousness or guilt. If he hadn’t seen her slip the silver into her bag, he never would have suspected anything was amiss.

Marguerite sipped at the wine and dabbed at her brow with her lace handkerchief.

He glanced at the doorway. “Would you like to step onto the balcony?”

She smiled and surprised him again by taking his hand. “Oui, but only if you will join me.”

“As if I would let such beauty out of my sight.”   Color crept up her powdered neck, invigorating her ivory skin. His tongue toyed with the sharp tips of his fangs while he fought the urge to taste her.

He couldn’t remember the last time a woman had awakened such desire in him.

She led him onto the balcony and sipped her wine.  “How do you know the Marquis?”

Kane leaned against the balcony wall, swirling the wine in his glass. “I purchased a mare from him a few years ago. He invites me to his parties in hopes I will return the kindness with more business.” He tilted the glass to his mouth without allowing any of the liquid to pass his lips. “Is the Marquis a relative of yours?”

“No. I attend on behalf of my Master. The Marquis is an admirer of his work.” A house servant passed by, and she placed her glass on the tray. She gnawed at her lower lip, drawing his attention to her perfect mouth. “And where is your wife, Monsieur?”

Her tone made the question sound like a challenge. Kane frowned and straightened to his full height. “I have never been married.”

She paused for a moment. “Without a wife and children, who will carry on your family line?”

He bit back a surprising burst of laughter. “I assure you, my family line will continue without a wife.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, studying him. “You are…puzzling, Monsieur Bordeaux.”

“I prefer to think of myself as simple. Relationships complicate.” He straightened his stifling vest, fighting the urge to rip it off. His gold watch thumped against his chest, reminding him that his quarry had not taken the bait. Interesting.

“Ah, but life would be dull without them, no?” The sound of her voice and the way the candlelight sparkled in her eyes hypnotized him. She took his hand again. “The final dance is beginning. We should join the party.”

He allowed her to pull him back into the ballroom, and spun her around to face him. They waltzed among the other party guests, circling the room until the dancers sharing the floor blurred around them.

As the music swelled, her hand slipped from his and Marguerite spun away to her new dance partner. A pert, auburn-haired beauty with a shy smile took his hand, and though he might have considered seducing her into his bed, he couldn’t focus on her. Not with Marguerite dancing one, then two partners away.

It was a dizzying flood of color as dresses billowed, dancers turned, and laughter blended with the crescendo of the string quartet. Kane bowed and waltzed with several new partners before he realized he’d lost Marguerite in the crowd.

He fingered his vest pocket.

He had also lost his favorite gold watch.

Although he knew she’d never forgive him, when Michael was given the chance to become a Grimm, he took it. Still, he isn’t so sure Elle needs him in her life. With a lover at her side and a mission before her, Elle looks like she’s doing just fine without him.

I Thought It Was You

Grimm’s Circle #2.5

byShiloh Walker

It turns out both Ren and Elle had some loose ends they needed to tie up…and that’s what this story is about. It’s not Ren’s happy ever after. That’s in Crazed Hearts.

Crazed Hearts

Grimm’s Circle #3

byShiloh Walker

Ren has always danced along the fine line between being a little bit crazy and being overcome by a darkness that’s haunted him since his mortal days. As an empath, he prefers to live far from people who would leak their emotions all over him, so he’s not expecting the woman who drives right into the heart of his wood. She has a cursed book with her and demons hot on her heels. Even more surprising are her abilities and the reaction Ren has to her.

Aileas is on the run. She just isn’t certain if she’s running from something real or imagined. One thing is for sure, her brother is dead and she’s certain the book she found has something to do with his death. She really starts to doubt her sanity when she meets a hot but somewhat crazed man in the middle of nowhere.

He calls himself Ren, and although he doesn’t seem to be out to hurt her, he definitely seems to want something. She just doesn’t understand what. She does know what she wants though. She wants him, and the shadows and darkness she glimpses inside him don’t matter. At least, right up until he claims to be a guardian angel.
And she thought she was going crazy.

Tarnished Knight

Grimm’s Circle #4

byShiloh Walker

The mind forgets, but the body remembers. Everything.

One look at Jack Wallace and Perci knows he’s going to be trouble. Even surrounded by soul stealers, he’s a one-man wrecking crew. What does he need Grimm training for? He’s already hell on earth, a warrior bent on destruction. And something…more.
He’s too strong and fast to be a mere mortal. Even covered in blood, he makes her forget she’s only here to do a job and get out. It’s twisted. Sick. She hasn’t felt this alive in three centuries.
Born with a natural talent for killing unnatural things, Jack has always known things he shouldn’t. The fact that Perci is one of them glows all over her. Giving him an unholy urge to see just how far he can push her before don’t touch me melts into touch me there.
When they come together, it isn’t careful or cautious. It’s heaven and hell, exposing all their raw and wounded places to healing heat, resurrecting memories of a destined love from the distant past. But the evil that destroyed them once before has tracked them here, threatening their second and last chance at forever. Demanding a sacrifice no one—Grimm or human—should ever be asked to make…
Warning: Dark, sexy, a little bit scary—this fairy tale is only for grownups and is best saved for bedtime.

Grimm Tidings

Grimm’s Circle #6

byShiloh Walker

Never fear the pain. Fear what lies behind it…

In his mortal life, the only thing Jacob liked better than money was a good brawl—until he stuck his fist into the wrong fight, and a demon sent him spinning into a new life as a Grimm.

Now, a hundred years later, he’s been called to protect someone too much like himself. A woman who could let the chains of her past drag her down unless she learns to let go. A woman who fights like there’s no tomorrow, because she clearly doesn’t want a tomorrow.

Celeste thought her second chance at life would be an opportunity to fix some of her worst mistakes, to set things straight. She couldn’t have been more wrong. She’s trapped by the past and her regrets, and nothing—not even her darkly sexy new trainer, Jacob—has a blade sharp enough to cut her loose.

Chains are Jacob’s specialty, but his help comes with a price. To her, the cost is her heart. To Jacob…something much more.

Blind Destiny

Grimm’s Circle #7

Heigh ho, heigh ho, it’s back to hell she goes…

Myrsina knows the stories. As one of the oldest of the Grimm, she had a hand in writing most of them, but only she knows the dark origin of the Seven Bloody Sisters. It springs from the place of her birth—and her death. A place of pain and misery to which she plans to never return. Unless forced.

When Luc appears on her doorstep, her heart twists with suppressed longing for the man who can never be hers. The only man who can make her do the impossible—go home.

Luc may be blind, but through their unique, bittersweet connection, even he can see that the task laid before them is ripping Sina’s soul apart. This time it isn’t as simple as fighting a demon that has escaped from the netherplains.

Sina must go back in time—to that cursed ground—and right a wrong that she unknowingly brought about. To write a new ending to a story that may give them both a chance at happily ever after. Assuming they survive

The Taming of the Thief

One Treasure…

Some would kill to know what Sophie Kingston knows. Rich and powerful people will do anything to possess the secret, but not even Sophie realizes how much danger she is in—or how far they will go to hunt her down and take it from her.  But when she sees a murder no one can prove, the threats to her life keep coming.

One Hunt…

Pietr Sauvage is neck deep in the hunt for The Fortunate Buddha when a lead draws him to New York and thrusts him into the life of art history specialist Sophie.  What began as a favor turns into a desperate need to protect the sexy curator from the dark web of deception threatening to pull her under.

Too Many Thieves…

Lost in the shadow of intrigue and danger, Sophie must learn to trust Pietr, a man with an agenda, a man she can’t help but desire, before the ruthless thieves steal their only chance.

Raising the stakes heightens the attraction…

Excerpt:

The last lock gave and Sophie leaned on the door and opened it. Her bag weighed hard on her shoulder and all she could think about was a shower or a bath and a good night’s sleep. Then back to the museum to her archive and to making sense from chaos. Dr. Hinkley could come back from his sabbatical and it would turn out to just be too many episodes of her favorite crime shows infecting her with their gestalt.

She pushed inside, purse sliding down her arm and dropping on the floor. Hitting the lights with one hand, she shut the door with the other and snapped the locks into place, one at a time. It took her a moment to focus, to see the man sprawling in relaxed pose on her sofa, his ankles crossed, one over the other.

Dark hair tumbled over a ruggedly good-looking face of chiseled features under a growth of stubble. His eyes were soft amber, like fine liquor and his lips were full and even as they spread into a smile.

Sophie gaped.

“Bonjour, cheri.” The lilting French rolling off his tongue sounded as sexy as it was unexpected.

She opened her mouth and screamed, scrambling for the door locks and just as she wrenched open the door, he leaned past her and pushed it closed.

“I’m sorry, Professor Kingston, I didn’t mean to startle you.” The heat of his body burned into her as he pressed her against the door.

Sophie stared at him. The shooter’s French from the museum washed over her. But this man was taller.

Much taller.

“What are you doing in my apartment?”

“I need your help.”

“Breaking into my apartment is a bizarre way to ask for help.” How do I sound so very calm? Her heart beat against her ribs like a hummingbird desperate for escape.

“Oui.” Tall, dark and French had the grace to look abashed. “My apologies. I waited at the museum for a few hours, and then outside your apartment building. I admit, I got a little tired. I came inside to see if you’d gone out of town, but fortunately, here you are.”

Sophie’s mouth fell open further. Her heart stuttered over his grin, but quickened at the sense of outrage.

“Are you going to let me go?”

“Are you still going to scream?”

“I’m thinking about it.”

“Well then, I shall hold you here until you have considered the options. Oui?”

“My options?” Sophie’s eyebrows climbed. Was this man for real? Outrage smothered fear. “My options? You broke into my apartment. You’re holding me against my will. You just confessed to stalking me. And you want me to consider my options? Are you out of your mind?”

The bastard grinned. Grinned! A broad, toothy, flashing grin that sent shivers up her spine. Her stomach flipped over. He brushed so close the scent of his aftershave tickled her nostrils. She fought the urge to take a deeper inhale, to taste the flavor of the man on her tongue.

“I’ve been accused of worse, cheri. Fortunately for you, I am not insane. But I do need your help and I do need to talk to you without you screaming for help and putting us through a long night of uncomfortable questions.”

“I suppose you have a counter offer?” Had she gone completely insane that morning? Imagining a coworker felled by a bullet? A day of bad coffee and questioning at the police station? She was hungry. She was tired. Maybe that explained why she would entertain this lunacy.

“Of course. Dinner. Some wine. A conversation. After which, I go away and you get some sleep.” Her uninvited guest trailed a finger down her cheek, sending shivers radiating across her flesh. “And forgive me cheri, but you look very tired.”

“I’ve had an abysmal day. I am not in the mood for entertaining much less having a meal with someone I don’t know and who broke into my apartment and is currently threatening me.”

“I am not.”

“Yes. You are.” Sophie punctuated the words with a hard shove against his chest. To her surprise he stepped back, nimble as a cat and held his hands out wide.

It was her chance. She could slip out the door and make a run for it. If nothing else she could yell her lungs out. She knew all of her neighbors. Valorie across the hall with her five kids would call the police in a heartbeat.

But Sophie didn’t yell.

She didn’t yank the door open.

She didn’t bolt.

“What’s your name?” Sophie asked instead.

“Then we chat? Perhaps over wine?”

“No, then I check your references and perhaps we meet tomorrow for coffee.”

He laughed then; a long, inviting, warm chuckle that beckoned her to abandon caution for the sheer exhilaration of leaping.

“I am not sure what references you intend to check. Is there a database for cat burglars?”

“Is that what you are?”

“An outdated term to be certain, but I rather doubt that you will find me listed under some typical B & E reference of a library database.” His too sexy mouth twitched. He enjoyed the banter.

Call me crazy, but so am I.

“Then maybe Interpol would be a better reference point.”

“You wound me little bird. Interpol is extremely low brow for someone of my caliber.”

“And I only have your word for that.” Sophie countered.

“True.” He stepped back, giving her more space and still, Sophie didn’t make a run for it. Despite her better judgment, the Frenchman intrigued the hell out of her tired mind, arousing her curiosity. He aroused a lot more than her curiosity, but she ignored that traitorous thought.

Sophie studied the man standing in the middle of her living room. Surrounded by the muted, antique colors of soft golds and browns, he was a splash of color, vibrant, alive and very raw. The twinkle in his eyes teased her, dared her.

“Why are you here?”

“Existentially?”

“No. Physically. Here. My apartment. Why are you here?”

“Honestly?”

“Call me quirky, but I think that’s exactly what this situation calls for.”

His laughter washed over her. The corners of Sophie’s mouth tugged wider. She loved the sound of his laughter and her smile spread wider at the sound of it.

“My name is Pietr Sauvage. I am here because I need your help.”

A little about:  Heather Long lives in Texas with her family and their menagerie of animals. As a child, Heather skipped picture books and enjoyed the Harlequin romance novels by Penny Jordan and Nora Roberts that her grandmother read to her. Heather believes that laughter is as important to life as breathing and that the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus are very real. In the meanwhile, she is hard at work on her next novel.

Kimberly’s Review of The Submission by Sonia Hightower

The Submission

Sonia Hightower & D.F. Krieger

The editor is always right… Katia Lane, a down on her luck writer, finds this out the hard way. When she submits an erotic tale to Daring Desires Publishing, one head strong woman meets another as an author/editor war ensues. There’s no room for a diva in the publishing industry…and Sylvia L. Avers means to demonstrate this to the fledging writer. When you submit a manuscript to Daring Desires, you submit more than a book…you submit yourself.

As a BDSM conference nears, both women prepare to face off. Which one is going to be the top space?

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Kimberly

NUMBER OF STARS: 2 Stars

REVIEW:
The concept of this book is interesting. It takes a modern day situation of wanting to write a book and be published instead of going self-publish and puts the women in the rolls of Dom and sub. While writing the story the publisher says to the author that it is obvious that the author does not live the lifestyle of BDSM to be writing it and I couldn’t help but think that the statement was true of the real author. Besides that there is not much BDSM in the story. The story is a short read of about 50 pages and maybe if there had been more background it would have worked a little better but there seems to be very little connection between the characters other than hostility and then they are having sex. The storys concept is great and given some time and better editing (ironically) this would have been a better story.

Disclaimer:
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt:

Sylvia chuckled as she ran her fingers down the front of the other woman’s dress. The fabric whispered under her fingertips, reminding her of Katia’s skin. She slid her hand to the side, pausing over a breast, before tracing a finger in a circle over where she bet Kat’s nipple was. “Do you want to be spanked?” She allowed her tone to take on the husky sound that often went hand in hand with her state of horniness.

“I…” Katia licked her lips and shifted, obviously experiencing conflicting emotions. “I’m still not sure about spanking. It felt good but…”

“Shhh.” Sylvia placed a finger on the lush, pink lips that she wanted so badly to bruise with kisses. “I know what you need, Kitty Kat. I’ll make you purr.”

She took Katia’s hand and led her to the bed. The structure was large and sat high enough to give her exactly the angle she needed. With coaxing pressure, she bent Katia over the edge of the bed. Sylvia loved the way Kat’s dress flirted with the bottom of her round, firm ass. It brushed the tops of the back of her thighs like a black butterfly testing cream-colored roses.

Without warning, she laid her palm across Katia’s rear in a gentle smack. The woman emitted a soft gasp of surprise, but didn’t struggle. Pleased, Sylvia did it again and again, making each smack a little harder than the last. A part of her wished she’d brought her paddle, but another part enjoyed the silk against her palm. The way it slid higher and higher.

When she had Katia panting, Sylvia slid her hand between the sub’s thighs and inserted a finger into her pussy. “Oh my, Kitty Kat, you are a spigot down there. I’ve never met anyone who could turn the water works on like this.”

Katia’s body tensed, and Sylvia laughed as she used her free hand to slap one of the now exposed ass cheeks. The skin was a nice shade of pink that spoke of force without the risk of bruising. It made Sylvia’s own pussy wet to see how well she’d worked the BDSM virgin over. The mewls of pleasure that Katia gave with each thrust of Sylvia’s finger did nothing to stave off that desire.

“M-mistress!”

“Yes, my little bestseller?” Sylvia pushed her finger deep and held still, awaiting Katia’s next words.

“I think I understand now,” Katia said with a whimper. “I understand it isn’t about pain, but about the trust to take each other past certain boundaries.”

Sylvia shook her head. “Oh no,” she said as she inserted a second finger. “You don’t understand quite yet.”

With those words, she began pumping Katia harder. She allowed her other hand to wander to her waist, down her band, and under her panties. When she slid her finger inside of her, it was like an earthquake shook her entire body. As if sensing her orgasm, Katia screamed out as well, her pussy clenching Sylvia’s fingers.

As they stood there, panting, Sylvia removed her hand from Katia’s sopping pussy. She went to the bathroom, washed her hands off, then filled a cup with cold water. Katia sat on the edge of the bed when she walked back, looking shaken and uncertain. Sylvia handed her the water.

After Katia took a few sips, she closed her eyes. “Thank you,” she whispered.

“Now,” Sylvia said as she caressed Kat’s cheek, “you understand.”

Interview & giveaway with Deborah Cooke

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Deborah Cooke to the blog today to chat about her upcoming release Ember’s Kiss.

Deborah, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Hi. Thanks for inviting me to visit! I’m Deborah Cooke and I also write as Claire Delacroix. In fact, I wrote first as Claire Delacroix – I sold my first book in 1992, a medieval romance called THE ROMANCE OF THE ROSE. That publisher preferred authors to use pseudonyms and I thought having another name sounded like fun. My editor and I came up with the name Claire Delacroix together. As Claire, I’ve written and published 23 medieval romances, 3 urban fantasy romances  and a bunch of novellas. Currently, I have one medieval romance that is a free read (THE BEAUTY BRIDE ) a new medieval romance out called THE RENEGADE’S HEART , and an upcoming urban fantasy novella called “No Halo Required”.

I also write the Dragonfire series of paranormal romances as myself , and wrote a spin-off paranormal YA trilogy called The Dragon Diaries . This summer, I republished some contemporary romances that were initially published under the pseudonym Claire Cross as Deborah Cooke books. The Coxwells are right HERE.

I’ve published almost 50 romance novels in a wide variety of sub-genres in the past twenty years – which is an amazing thing to me. I have a wonderful time writing these books. In 2009, I was the writer-in-residence at the Toronto Public Library, the first time TPL hosted a residency focussed on the romance genre, and in 2012, I was honored to receive the Romance Writers of America PRO Mentor of the Year Award.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I always loved writing and telling stories. When I was in school, I didn’t think it was practical for anyone to want to be an author. It was only after I finished college and started working that I began to write fiction and pursue publication. I was right – it’s not a practical way to make a living, but I enjoy it more than anything else I’ve ever done.

Are you a plotter or a panster? And can you explain the difference?

A plotter is someone who works out every detail of the story in advance, in a fairly detailed outline. Some plotters work in a series of outlines, beginning with a high level and short one, then working their way to a scene by scene outline. It’s like a map of the book before it’s written. Pantsers wing it. They put their fingers on the keyboard and start writing, letting the story flow as it comes to them. They may have a definite idea of their destination or the shape of the story, or they might not.

I am intuitively a pantser. I think that many writers who have been avid readers tend to be pantsers. But I have learned the value of having a plan in advance – there is nothing worse than having to chuck a scene or a passage or even a chapter after it’s written, especially if it’s written well. Just because it’s good doesn’t mean it belongs in the finished book. So, I work somewhere in the middle. I begin with a fairly solid synopsis of 8 to 10 pages which presents the structure of the story at a high level, like an executive summary. But as I write, I’m open to surprises. I often modify the plan for the middle of the book as I write – when the characters come to life and begin to defy the outlined action, they often have better ideas than my original ones. I’ve learned to listen to them!

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

When I finish writing a book, I do my filing, clean my office and get a haircut. It’s a ritual so I can start the next day fresh, with a new story.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

My current Dragonfire release is EMBER’S KISS, the 8th book in my Dragonfire series of paranormal romances. In this series, the heroes are all dragon shapeshifters – they’re the good dragon shifters, called the Pyr, and are locked into a final battle with the bad dragon shifters, called the Slayers. The Pyr live a long time but are not immortal. They each have one chance to make more dragon shifters. When a Pyr meets the human woman who can bear his child, he experiences a firestorm – sparks literally fly between the pair. So, each of the Dragonfire novels focusses on the firestorm of one of the dragon guys. They’re action-packed romances, because all of the dragon shifters can feel the burn of the firestorm, even if it isn’t their own – inevitably, the heroine is targeted by the Slayers. She may be reluctant to be seduced by a dragon shifter, let alone bear his child, but the flames burn until their match is consummated – and a child is conceived that first time, every time.

The issue with writing a long-running series is that the books can start to seem the same. I really don’t want that to happen with Dragonfire and have been determined from the outset to make each book distinct. This year, my two dragon shifters have been reluctant Pyr. They are outsiders by choice, who are drawn into the circle of the Pyr as a result of having their firestorm, and meeting a woman who changes their minds about many things. (I like heroines like that!) In January, in FLASHFIRE, we met Lorenzo, who actually had a plan to ditch the dragon side of his nature because he hated it so much. Cassie changed his thinking on that, and his evolving relationship with her brought him into closer alliance with the other Pyr.

In October, in EMBER’S KISS, we meet Brandon, who is living in denial of his dragon nature. He’s estranged from his father, from whom he inherited the power to shift, and blames his father for his parents’ divorce. The last thing he wants is any common ground with his dad, or to be like his dad in any way. When Brandon has his firestorm, he’s awed and amazed, and isn’t quite sure how to proceed. What I like about this story is that Liz is the first of the Dragonfire heroines to have any paranormal powers of her own. Once I realized that one of them had to have an understanding of such inherited powers and the logic of magic, Liz’s magical past made perfect sense to me. (I knew she had a secret, right from the first time she showed up on the page. Only Brandon convinced her to tell me about it, though.) I love how these two change each other’s perceptions and how they become a powerful team together.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

Currently, I have a couple of projects in the works. I am polishing “No Halo Required”, the urban fantasy romance novella mentioned above. I’m writing THE HIGHLANDER’S CURSE, which is the next Claire Delacroix historical in the True Love Brides series. I’m also writing a trilogy of Dragonfire novellas, which star Drake and the Dragon’s Teeth Warriors. They’ll be published in 2013, initially as digital novellas, then bundled together as a print and digital anthology.

There will be a post on my blog on November 1 about the 2013 plan for Dragonfire. It’s not live yet, but here’s the permalink

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

Most of the authors I’d love to meet are (unfortunately) dead. I’d love to meet J.R.R. Tolkien and Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Chaucer and Bocaccio. I’d love to meet them because they were great storytellers and intuitive storytellers.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

If you want to be a writer, you need to read a lot. Most writers I know were avid readers, even when they were kids. Those who read a lot become intuitive storytellers – they develop a sense of when something needs to happen in the story, or what kind of thing needs to happen next. That’s an invaluable instinct and it’s one you can develop. You also read to read a wide variety of work, not just focus on one specific genre. When your reading takes you all over the bookstore (or the library), your ideas break free of the notions of specific genres. You’ll have richer ideas, and more original ones, which is a big part of becoming a successful writer.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

I want to visit Australia and New Zealand. One of these days!

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

My TBR pile is enormous and constantly growing – it’s also well-aged. Let me go poke at it and see what’s near the top today.

CITY OF ASHES Cassandra Clare

ZORRO Isabel Allende

BESPELLING JANE AUSTEN Mary Balogh, Colleen Gleason, Susan Krinard and Janet Mullany

I’m just going to put these back on top and tiptoe away, before I start an avalanche!

What is one book everyone should read before they die?

How could anyone just choose one? I don’t think anyone should die without having read 1000 books, maybe 10,000 books. Books are the ultimate adventure – and addiction. I can’t imagine reading just one or choosing a favorite.

What is your favorite time of year & why?

I love all the seasons, but autumn is my favorite. I like how the air becomes crisp, the colours of the changing leaves and the energy surge that I get in September. It might be a learned response from going back to school each year, but it’s invigorating.

Interview with Avril Ashton & tour wide giveaway

Avirl, can you please share with us a little about yourself?

I’m fueled by coffee and cake, addicted to naked men and music. I live in Brooklyn, New York where I write, I read, I love and sometimes I sleep.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Looking back I’d have to say yes. Back then I was too in love with reading to think about writing myself, but it’s always been in my veins. In my blood.

What is your most interesting writing quirk? Music. Need it.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Till Surrender is book two in my Paranormal Security Council series. Paranormal creatures are known by, and live alongside, humans. Said Paras are governed by a Secret Service-type entity known as The Council. There’s a traitor inside The Council and the series follows the members of The Council’s elite ‘Kill-Squad’ as they find love and try to keep The Council from imploding from the inside out. Saint is sent to eliminate the professor turned activist who’s rallying humans to rise up against Paras, but Saint falls in love with his target’s younger brother instead.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

Um, stuff just popped into my head. I turn on some music, close my eyes, and allow the characters to lead me where they want.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m currently working on Book three in the PSC series, Till Mercy. This book follows Nathan, the professor turned activist I mentioned above. Nathan has some major pain happening and he has to find a way to deal with loss without losing himself. He finds unexpected love with a most unexpected someone, but it remains to be seen if Nathan will keep that love. His story—and love interest—is a secret I’ll reveal much later J

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

Cameron Dane. ‘Cause she makes me cry every damn time!

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Read. Write. Research.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

Travel. Anywhere.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

My TBR pile is huge and ever-growing. I’d like a week to just read all the books I have on there.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
