Excerpt
Forcing my eyes to open, I found myself outside the Cradlehack. I was standing in Faris’s arms, my head against his chest, my fingers entwined in his black vest. It was a smooth fabric that felt like silk. A cloth no one had worn outside of ceremonies since before the Tidal Years. This boy was no common citizen. His earthy-sweet smell made me feel hypnotically safe, as we stood among the crowd fleeing down the hillside. He lifted my chin, stared in my eyes. But this wasn’t some dumb player’s move.
No, a mysterious thing stirred behind his silvery-gray eyes.
“Feel better, Chela?” he asked. I nodded.
“Thanks for helping me,” I said, still fighting a light head. Still afraid the dreaded black blobs lingered somewhere around us. Somewhat ashamed I’d spoken so horribly to him moments ago.
“You probably shouldn’t do that,” he said.
                “Do what?”
                “Thank me.”
“Why? Because I caught you using alchemy? That’s what your kind does. Make magic in the shadows, right?” I said.
His left eye ticked. The girl in the hoodie had called him a Caducean. Could it be possible? Father told me Caduceans were a mythical group—demon slayers from a time long gone. Yet, here I stood with a boy who didn’t deny my claim.
Around us, fewer people were leaving the Shack. They paid no attention to the two idiots standing and staring at each other. Did Jalen and Lexa make it out safely?  They were taking forever to reach me.
Did I really want them to find me?
“They’ll call me, now, and make me a witness against you. I’m sorry, but I already have too many problems. So I—I have to tell the truth,” I said.
“That won’t be a problem.” Faris smiled, a catchy one that lit his face up. I couldn’t decide whether it was angelic or downright wicked. Just like I couldn’t remember where I’d ever heard an accent like his. What kind was it? Old southern? Old English? Irish? It sounded like a mix of all three, but with a deep timbre, making him sound god like. “In a few minutes, you won’t remember me or any of this.”
“Really? How do you figure that?” I asked, heart racing.
“Because my gift to you…” He moved his face closer to mine, pulling me into whatever was happening in his head. “My gift is to remove memories that cause you pain.”
“Okay, um, right.” Had I lost my mind? It probably wouldn’t have hurt to scream.
He held my gaze, locking me into something I couldn’t explain. A tear puckered up in his left eye, and slid down his cheek where it stopped on his top lip. Then he blinked, snapping us out of whatever place he’d taken us to, and glanced behind my head. “Here comes your dark knight,” he said, easing his arms away from me.
He strolled off into the last group of stragglers hanging around the Shack. How did he know my nickname for Jalen?
I wiped away a tear rolling down my right cheek.
“Chela, there you are. You scared me, girl.” Jalen’s voice cut into the moment. He spun me around to face him. I blinked, clearing my eyes. “What’s wrong? Did you get hurt?”
I glanced around us. The boy was gone. A dull headache joined the fuzziness in my head. Lost inside a clouded mind, I forgot what I wanted to say. The entire night’s events were hazy.
                I fumbled with my thoughts.
What happened to me in there?

Naughty Holiday Lyrics
I’ve always been a huge fan of holiday music. My iTunes Christmas playlist has literally hundreds of songs. As soon as Thanksgiving passes, it’s open season on playing them non-stop until New Year’s Eve.
This holiday season the music has been a different experience for me. I’ve been working hard on my writing and even published an erotic holiday novella. I think due to this, my frame of mind has been different. I’ve been stuck in a rather “adult” mode.
This year a lyric like “Santa Claus Got Stuck in My Chimney” took on a whole new meaning for me. Suddenly many songs had hidden meanings like the adult jokes in a children’s animated movie. Never before had so many songs been so suggestive. “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” or “It Must Have Been the Mistletoe” suddenly didn’t seem to represent a season primarily geared toward children.
I’ve come to realize after a little thought, that there have always been songs with more adult themes. “Blue Christmas” definitely has an adult view with its description of a sad holiday breakup, something so many of us have experienced. And who can forget “Santa Baby,” a perennial favorite with a decidedly suggestive theme.
Even though my outlook has been different, my enjoyment is still there. So thank you Elvis, Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald and all those great musicians who’ve brought us the classics we can all enjoy year after year. Have a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for the New Year!

Interview & Giveaway with Camryn Rhys

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome back Camryn Rhys to the blog today.  We are looking forward to learning a little more about Camryn and her book Off the Record.

Camryn: So happy to be here today. There’s nothing I like better than books and kisses. J

Q1) Please tell us a little about yourself
Camryn: Well, I’m from the West, so writing about the Southeast was new for me, but this was just where my characters ended up. But in general, I like to write about the West. There’s something really unique and fun about the culture out here. It’s intense, in a very laid-back way. J

Q2)  Tell us a typical writing day for you
Camryn: Depends on the day. I have a full-time job, so on a work day, I usually come home and try to write a bit at night. Although in all honesty, most of the time I end up doing business and editing/plotting on my work days. But on my off-days, I write all day long. I try for at least 1K on my work days, and on my writing days, I try for 6-10K. Of course, that’s schedule-willing.

Q3) Have you always wanted to be an author or what made you become an author?
Camryn: I think I’ve wanted to be an author since I was born. I was a great… storyteller… yeah, that’s what I’ll call it. Yes. I’ve been telling stories for such a long time.

Q4) Tell us a little about your book Off the Record:
Camryn: It’s a foodie romance, which are my favorite to write. My main character is a chef, and her soon-to-be-love-interest is a food critic who’s about to publish a bad review about her restaurant. Lots of conflict. J

Q5) How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Camryn: A friend of mine opened a restaurant recently and she had a bad experience with a food critic, and it just made me realize that in certain communities, one bad review can absolutely kill a restaurant. From there, Kit was born and I was in love.

Q6)  What is your current work in progress?
Camryn: I’m working on a very secret (and soon to be not-so-secret) project with Decadent Press with a couple of other Western authors. I’m very excited about it and there will be more information on my website very soon.

Q7) Who are some of your favorite authors?
Camryn: I love Kristen Painter. She has this ability to write in any genre that I really covet. My good friend Cassandra Carr writes a sex scene like nobody’s business. And I just adore Beth Kery. I met her at RWA my first year, sitting at the hotel bar, drinking a very rich red wine. She was the exact embodiment of her characters. Sophisticated and very cool. I hadn’t read a single one of her books, but once I did, I put her on my “must-buy” list. She and Joey Hill are my absolute favorite erotic romance writers of all time. They are the people I aspire to be.

Q8) Have to ask because I am nosey.  That is in your to be read pile that you are dying to read next?
Camryn: I’m a member of Celtic Hearts Romance Writers, and I adore myself a good Celtic romance. So I’ve got a bunch of my fellow CHRW writers on my TBR list. Vonda Sinclair has a couple of really amazing Highlander books out from Carina Press that I am dying to get to read. And Margaret Mallory’s The Sinner and The Guardian are right up there. I’m also trying to read through the Black Dagger Brotherhood this year. We’ll see if I can make it. There are about a hundred of those things. J

Q9) Is there anything else you would to add?
Camryn: Just that I can be found on Twitter and one of my two blogs (either my website, or the Dirty Birdies blog) on a pretty regular basis. Stop by and say hi. I love to meet new people!

Books-n-Kisses: Camryn, thank you for taking the time to stop by the blog today to chat about yourself and your books. I am looking forward to reading Off the Record.  To learn more about Camryn or her books check her out here: Website / Blog / Facebook / Twitter

Camryn: Thank you so much for having me on Books-n-Kisses. What a fantastic blog name. I will definitely be back!

Interview & Giveaway with Lindsay Anne Kendal

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Lindsay Anne Kendal to the blog today. We are going to be talking about her books Bloodlines & Torment.

Lindsay: Thank you so much for having me here today, I’m so excited.

Q1) Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Lindsay: I have lived in Droylsden, Manchester, all my life. I live with my parents and my younger sister, Cheryl. I’m a very dark person, sometimes called gothic, I love anything spooky, supernatural, or unexplainable, and so that’s the genre I want to write in for the rest of my life.
Q2) Have you always wanted to be an author?
Lindsay: No. I changed my mind several time growing up. I wanted to be a vet, then a computer technician, then an interior designer. I never imagined becoming an author, but now, I couldn’t imagine being anything else.

Q3) Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?
Lindsay: I’m not a big reader to be completely honest. When I was in school I used to read a lot of the ‘Point Horror’ books, and I loved the author Richie Tankersley Cusick. Her books were the best by far ‘Trick or Treat’.
I can’t say a writer has influenced me really, because it’s only been the last year or so that I’ve started to read again.
Q4) Can you tell us what a typical writing day for you is like.
Lindsay:  Hard sometimes lol. I live at home with my parents, sister and my four month old niece. So sometimes it’s really hard to concentrate on writing when everyone else is around, chatting, messing about. I also work other jobs, so that takes up a lot of my time.
When I’m left alone, I put my music on, turn my lights off, make sure there is a full bottle of Pepsi Max near me and then go into another world whilst I write.
Let’s talk about your books:

Q5) Can you tell us a little about Bloodlines?
Lindsay: Bloodlines is the first in my trilogy, and is classed as YA/Urban Fantasy.
Keira Jameson is the lead character, who at the age of 10, learned she was heir to an awesome power. After the death of her father, she didn’t want to know about that side of her family and just wanted to lead a normal life. However, twelve years later, she starts to have bad dreams, hears voices of others calling out her, and the message her grandfather left her whilst on his deathbed, haunting her. So her, and her friend Lily, decide it is time to try and find the other families who were connected to hers in the past.
A chance meeting puts her on the right path. However, Keira than becomes involved with things she never could have imagined existed. She learns things about herself that she never knew were possible. Now, must fight for survival, and also for her new friends.
This book easies you into the story, shows all the characters personalities, and sets the scenes for what’s to come. It gives you a taster; if you like, of what the characters can do, the bonds they form etc. It’s a mix of horror, gentle romance, magic, demonology, friendship and trust, with a little bit of humour added in.
Order HERE
Q6) Can you tell us a little about Torment?

Lindsay: Torment is where things really start to heat up. They learn more about what is happening around them, and how they must fight not only for themselves, but for the fate of all things still breathing.
A few more characters are introduced, and more demons come to aid them. Keira discovers exactly what she is and why. The book is full of surprises, awesome battles, a stronger-than-death passion and magic.
Also, Lilith and Lucifer play a vital role, and you find out that things that people normally think are bad… actually aren’t.
There is really good cliff-hanger in this book too lol.

Q7) How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Lindsay: Do you know, I don’t really have a clue. I was poorly for a long time and spent a lot of time on my own. I was bored, restless and suffering for extreme panic attacks. After watching every film I owned, and getting bored to tears I started writing silly little stories, all of which were deleted. I found it relaxed me and took my mind of everything that had happened to me.
One night out of the blue, I started writing Bloodlines. The characters came from nowhere, the story seemed to just be implanted in my brain. I had a lot of support and was told to stick with it. Now it’s a trilogy lol.
Q8) What is up next for you?
Lindsay: I’m currently working on Revelations; the last book. I’ve also just signed a contract with my publisher for the first in a new two part series, entitled ‘Leticia’. So as soon as Revelations is done. I need to get working on the second book. I also have a secret project, but I can’t discuss that at the moment.
Q9) What is the next book on your To Read Pile that you are dying to jump into?
Lindsay: I’m actually really looking forward to reading City of Ashes. I read City of Bones months ago and really enjoyed it. I own the second and third, but I just haven’t had time to read them.
Q10) Is there anything else you would like to add?
Lindsay: I’d just like to say that I hope anyone who reads these books enjoys them as much as I enjoyed writing them. I’d love to hear people opinions. I respect peoples honesty too, so if you don’t like the book, that’s fine, let me know what you didn’t like. I think negative reviews should be listened to, so the author can use them to better themselves. Of course if you love the book, I’d like to know what your favourite parts were. I love speaking to people and getting their feedback.
Books-n-Kisses: Lindsay, again thank you so very much for making Books-n-Kisses a stop on your book tour.  I have enjoyed learning more about you and your book.  I look forward to reading and see what you come up with next.
Lindsay: Thanks so much for having me, it’s been a blast. Happy reading everyone!

I have one E-copy of Bloodline to giveaway.

Guest Blogger K. Carlton

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to let Kenya Carlton take over the blog today.

Helpless and Hopeless is my first dip in the short story pond.  I like to take my time and poke around in my characters head for awhile but that would defeat the purpose of mini erotic stories for readers short on time. With the challenge of constructing a short story from my usual 300 pages to a tight and healthy 100 I came up with two of my cutest characters Brooke Langley and Sam Foley.
The adult versions of the two high school misfits that grew up are the type of friends that everyone thinks should bone if they are not all ready.  A couple of cute kittens that jump, play, and snuggle.  Familiar as an old marry couple but unwilling to throw in the towel and admit that they were made for each other.
I had fun with these two friends that go way back and I don’t think I could have pulled off my first short with any other couple but them.
Sam the quintessential shy jock is the guy girls really want in high school instead of the obnoxious block head that they ultimately end up with.  Most girls aren’t mature enough to know that.  Brooke Langley on the other hand saw Sam’s potential but unfortunately not her own.  Big boobs with a lot of ambition and just as much heart Brooke allowed the moniker of the poor kid follow her around and dog her through out her entire high school experience.
Both of these characters succeed as adults on different life paths but always seem to find themselves back in each other’s arms within a 16 year time period.
In this short the question will they or won’t they become more than friends with benefits isn’t answered but stick with these two because I plan to revisit this characters once more in Helplessly Hopeless at a later date.

Undressed Inc. Anthology
At Undressed Inc., the women you meet are an eclectic bunch, but there is one thing that connects them: their sexual desire and their need to satiate that desire. In the hot anthology Undressed Inc., sit back and enjoy four stories that bring you front and center on dynamic women who, once tangled with a man who pushes all her hot buttons, fight for every drop of pleasure and love they can get.
HELPLESS AND HOPELESS by K. Carlton
Not at all happy about her long-awaited homecoming, video vixen Brooke Langely finds herself the maid of honor in her best friend’s wedding and face to face for the first time in years with her old high school rivals. But Brooke has her silver lining in the form of Sam Foley, the shy jock in high school that was Brooke’s favorite extracurricular activity after school.
For the next few days, Brooke plans to make up for old times and screw her sex buddy like crazy.  Unfortunately, her best friend’s circus of a wedding threatens to get in her way.

BLACK HONEY by Samara King
Skeletons could wake the departed and make the living – dead targets!

Leaning on her father’s enforcer and her ex-lover seemed suicidal when the hit on her father was said to be ordered by his own people. Yet, the impulsive and heady sexual chemistry between them was undeniable.
One touch was all it took for the lines between good and bad to blur. One kiss was all she needed for him to steal her breath away…
TABLES TURNED by Ayanna Pierce

No matter the time of day, her mind is constantly focused on Drew Winger, a man she wants but can’t seem to conjure up her sexy nighttime persona Siren to express her feelings.

Spotlight Feature & Giveaway of Black Lust by Karyn Gerrard

Black Lust
by Karyn Gerrard

Lucius Black lives a debauched and wild nightlife. Being a ‘Quarter’ (1/4 vampire), blood and sex are what he is. However, his existence wears thin after a century of hedonistic pleasure.
Trevina Patterson lives a quiet, happy life running a hair salon in a village on the east coast of the United Kingdom. It was a perfect life and all she could ask for, until a chance encounter with Lucius Black.
What was it about him that was so unsettling and yet so attractive?
For Lucius, no woman had ever been enough, until Trevina. She awakened in him feelings he had not thought possible. Passions considered by him to be little more than vampiric mythology. She awakened his…black lust.
Teaser Excerpt:
Trevina strolled up the stone walkway and knocked at the door. It was ajar, so she stuck her head in. “Hello? Anyone here?”
No one answered so she took a hesitant step across the threshold. Oh brilliant, it had hardwood floors and a fireplace. She felt the nearby wall, plaster, but with a fresh coat of paint. It was clean and bright. She imagined where she would place her few sticks of furniture when a deep voice boomed from the hallway.
“Who the hell are you, and what do you want?”
Her head turned toward the direction of the irritated voice. Her breath caught in her throat. A stunning looking man stood opposite her, his legs apart, and his arms crossed. He was in black leather from his long coat to the skin hugging leather pants and black boots. A tight black T-shirt accentuated rock-hard pectorals.
Trevina assumed this stunner looked like a fallen angel or a sexy demon, maybe both. At least that is how they seemed in the movies and on the telly. He had full red lips no man should possess and a scruffy days-old beard and chiseled handsome features. But it was his eyes, the same silver-gray as the sky over a stormy North Sea. They were very large and expressive, framed by long black eyelashes. She imagined the lashes were as soft as mink. He appeared dangerous, and she should be scared, but those eyes had her locked in a searing sexual Svengali-like gaze. He exuded perilous detachment. Impenetrable, guarded, and shielded from emotions. Why she sensed all that, she had no idea. Instead of running to her scooter for safety, she stepped forward holding out her hand. “Trevina Patterson. Do you own this lovely cottage?”
The man stared down at her hand as if deciding whether to take it. He uncrossed his arms, took her hand and shook it. His hand was large, masculine, and very warm. His touch almost brought her to her knees it was so potent. His thumb stroked the top of her hand in a gentle circular motion. A slight sly smile curved his ruby red lips. She tried to bite back a moan but a shaky exhale escaped her throat. He let go of her hand. She felt anger mix with the intoxicating attraction. Did he get off making women react to him, especially women who were not beautiful? She knew she wasn’t. She accepted her blunt-plain features years ago; it saved her plenty of heartache.
“No, it belongs to a cousin of mine. I was looking at it, deciding if I was going to rent it. Why do you ask, Trevina?”
He used her first name. Oh, he was skilled at seduction. It dripped like molten honey in his voice, and she noticed he didn’t have a British accent. She moved closer to him. She would show this sexy leather clad demon she wasn’t intimidated.  She looked up at him. Bloody hell, he was tall. “I would like to rent it myself. What’s your name?”
He crossed his arms again, a defensive posture to be sure. “Lucius Black.”
She couldn’t help but smile. The name fit him like a leather glove.
He cocked an eyebrow. “Something amusing?”
She bit her lower lip. “No. Nothing. So I’m out of luck apparently.”
He shifted his stance so he was, just inches away. Her breasts brushed by his impressive muscular chest causing a gush of liquid between her legs. He stared down at her, and his warm breath fanned her cheeks like the incendiary breath of a dragon. A damned sexy one. He exuded a spicy, woodsy scent that was bloody appealing. Warm flickering flame, fire and brimstone perhaps?
“I would not say that,” he whispered sensually.

Living in a small town in a corner of Ontario, Canada, I wile away my spare time writing, reviewing and reading romance. As long as I can avoid being hit by a runaway moose here in this wilderness paradise, I assume everything is golden. Originally from the east coast of Canada, I love to set my stories in the Maritime Provinces~

Interview with Juniper Bell

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Juniper Bell to the blog today.  We are looking forward to learning a little more about Juniper and her book Go Deep.

Juniper: Thank you for having me, I’m thrilled to be here. Books and kisses are two of my favorite things.

Q1) Please tell us a little about yourself
Juniper: I write erotic romance for Samhain and Ellora’s Cave. My books tend to feature very dominant men, smart women, ménage, light bondage themes, usually a contemporary setting though I’ve written one Regency. I live in a tiny town in Alaska with my husband and stepdaughters. And I just bought tickets for a trip to Hawaii. Yay!

Q2)  Tell us a typical writing day for you
Juniper: My typical writing day involves a lot of cursing and curling up in a fetal position. Not really. I pace around until I think I can face the computer, then I tie myself to the chair until I’ve filled 12 pages. Not really. I do take bathroom breaks. But seriously, my typical day? I don’t really have one. The only typical part is I do maintain a strict word count goal and always stick to it. But it may come in the morning, the afternoon, or when everyone’s gone to bed.

Q3) Have you always wanted to be an author or what made you become an author?
Juniper: Yes, I have always wanted to be an author, ever since I understood the concept that an actual person wrote the books I loved. I’ve never wanted to be anything else, but I took a roundabout route to get here. I used my writing skills for news promotion, encyclopedia updates, screenplays, TV copy, many other things. It took me a while to believe that I could write a novel.

Q4) Tell us a little about your book Go Deep
Juniper: Go Deep is a novella about a married couple who are both hiding their deepest sexual desires from each other. They attend a winter festival called “Wild Nights,” where the only rule is “anything goes, nothing counts.” They grab this opportunity to break through their barriers, share their sexual secrets, and let loose.

Q5) How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Juniper: I think it was inspired by the fact that I recently got married. I started thinking about how many layers people have and how much you can still learn about someone even after years, and even after taking a vow to spend your life together.

Q6)  What is your current work in progress?
Juniper: I just finished (just a few minutes ago, actually) the first draft of the 3rd book in my Receptionist series, called Unleashing the Receptionist. This is a really fun series about a sassy receptionist, her two extremely sexy bosses and their highly inappropriate adventures.

Q7) Who are some of your favorite authors?
Juniper: The authors I write with are way up there. PG Forte, Kelly Jamieson, Skylar Kade, Meg Benjamin, Kinsey Holley, Erin Nicholas, Kate Davies and Sydney Somers are all part of the Nine Naughty Novelists. We wrote a serial romance parody called The Zillionaire Vampire Cowboy’s Secret Werewolf Babies that’s doing great on Amazon. Among authors I don’t write with – Nora Roberts, Lisa Kleypas, Christine Feehan, Sherry Thomas, Eloisa James, Beth Kery, Eden Bradley, Kate Pearce, Darynda Jones … somebody stop me!

Q8) Have to ask because I am nosey.  That is in your to be read pile that you are dying to read next?
Juniper: I have a pile of historicals I’m about to dig into: Maya Rodale, Sherry Thomas, Sarah McLean. Can’t wait!

Q9) Is there anything else you would to add?
Juniper: I love to hang out online, so if anyone would like to connect on Facebook or Twitter, don’t be shy! On Twitter I’m @AuthorJuniper.

Books-n-Kisses: Juniper, again huge thank you for stopping by the blog to day to chat about you and your books.  I hope the readers enjoyed.
Juniper: Thanks for having me!

Book Feature: Sweet Irish Kiss by Joanne Kenrick

*Waves hi* Thanks so much for hosting a stop on my Sweet Irish Kiss book tour with Sizzling PR. I’m psyched to be here, and to share an excerpt from my first addition to the multi-author www.decadentpublishing.com series called 1NightStand. Yes, I said my first. That’s because I’ve a second coming out; Dracula’s Kiss releases in October, and if you love vampire romance, and are rather partial to a sexy Scotsman and spooky castle ruins with connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, then you’ll LOVE IT!
But first, we get to enjoy my hottie Irish Bar dude. Here’s the book trailer, blurb and buy links…you know, in case you feel compelled to want this Irish hottie in your eReader 🙂 Psst, the full recipe for an Irish Kiss, a Baileys cocktail almost as smooth as Shaun Bell, is within the story…as is the recipe for Shaun’s version.

BLURB: Shaun Bell, a divorced workaholic, spends all his time tending bar in his Irish Pub. He’s ready to love again, but the women who visit his bar are only after his infamous Irish cocktails. At the advice of his darts team over a tanker or two of Beamish, he applies to 1Night Stand to get back into the swing of things and enjoy the company of a woman specially selected for him by Madame Evangeline.
Rachel Taylor has issues. Her father broke her mother’s heart with his cheating and Rachel swore never to let that happen to her, but one ruined relationship after another and she’s realized she’s got to get over being closed off to men. Perhaps a one-night stand is just the baby step she needs to begin to build trust again.
A match seemingly made in heaven…until morning rolls around and Shaun can’t bring himself to say good-bye. Can he win her over with his secret weapon, a Sweet Irish Kiss, or is Rachel still too scared to love?

BOOK TRAILER TO BE INSERTED BY BLOGGER:

This excerpt has been ‘bleeped’ out to make it a PG-13. Please keep in mind that Sweet Irish Kiss does contain mature content and is not suitable for minors. Thank you.

Shaun spun and checked himself in the pristinely clean glass door that led into the penthouse suite. Ugh. His hair sat all skewed to the right, so he ran his fingers through his thick, deep brown locks and attempted to sort his style out. Instead, his actions forced the front to revolt and flop over his face in true Hugh Grant style.
“For bleep’s sake.He tapped his fingers on the tempered glass and frowned at his reflection. Not too shabby, he figured, besides the hair. Plain black slacks and a pin-stripe cotton shirt. His mum had always said darker colors flattered him because he worked out, and his shoulders and arms had attracted most of the bulk. Of course that could also have something to do with the fact he rode a motorbike to work every morning. London traffic was bloody awful and he’d quickly learned to maneuver in and out like a pro. Moving a bike like that was bound to build up certain muscles.
It had been overcast and drizzly all day. True to typical Brit weather, not knowing if it was coming or going, the mid-August evening air had warmed up.
He undid a couple of shirt buttons and made himself comfortable on a sun chair to enjoy the scenery. He could see Knightsbridge below and the London Eye in the distance.
Impatience grabbed at him and edged him to fidget and count the seconds drag by. He stood and paced the tiny space the balcony offered, sipping on an iced whiskey from the mini bar and watching people scurry by below. Each time he saw a woman alone, he wondered if it was her. But they all passed by.
“She’s not coming. Stood up by a sure thing. Stood up by a paid sure thing. That could only happen to me.”
“Rachel. He smiled. R-rachel.He liked the way her name sounded, and the way the R resonated in his mouth and rolled off his tongue.
He checked the time again. Ten minutes late, but it felt more like an hour.
He finished another drink and readied himself to hit up the mini bar, again. The clicking and fumbling sounds of someone trying to get a card key to work and a woman swearing several times made him glance toward the door. Rachel, he presumed, and chuckled. Before he could even debate heading over to help, the doors swung open like they’d been forced apart by a crowd of vampire hunting, log lunging, flaming torch throwing villagers. Or his regulars at Bell’s ready for happy hour
And there she stood. Holy mother of….
Would ya look at that.

The Birth of Jaiden by Jennifer Malone Wright

The Birth of Jaiden
Jennifer Malone Wright

Long ago, a prophecy was foreseen. A child would be born, a child who held the power to destroy the world. Now, it is up to Alexander Lucas, a one-hundred-year-old vampire, to keep the baby girl safe from his arch enemy Malcolm.
In order to save her, Alexander must raise the child as his own. Will he be able to resist his vampire tendencies to care for a human baby? With the help of the wisest of the supernatural, an organization called The Great Council, Alexander must face many battles to ensure the safety of this very special child.
Jennifer Malone Wright resides in the beautiful mountains of northern Idaho with her husband and five children. Between the craziness of taking care of her children, whose ages range from fifteen all the way down to one year, and being a homemaker, Jennifer has little time left for herself. The time she does have left, usually leading far into the night, is spent working on freelance work or her beloved fiction.
When she grew up, Jennifer always had her nose in a book. She has been writing stories and poems since grade school. This love of the written word and her strong interest in the paranormal is what has led to her first novel “The Birth of Jaiden.”
In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Jennifer is also a very proud military wife. Moving around the country for the last ten years has made her a bit of a nomad and she finds it difficult to be in one place for too long.

Expert from The Birth of Jaiden

Electric tingles of nervousness that vampires seldom feel
traveled through Alex’s body. The colossal sky slowly
turned from black, to gray, and even more slowly to blue.
They kept their thoughts to themselves as they waited in
silence. Alex squeezed Danielle’s hand and thought of how
all those years, with all of his hopes and dreams, he had
never thought he’d ever get to see another sunrise, the thing
he wanted more than anything.
Slivers of clouds mingled together in a pastel dance of
pinks, purples, and hazy oranges, then parted again and
made way for the huge ball of fire that rose into the sky.
Every emotion took its turn with Alex. Excitement replaced
the nervousness and he wondered how a dead heart could
beat so wildly. As the tip of the sun rose, his eyes slammed
shut in pain.
“Aaaahhhh!”
His free hand flew up to his head while a million tiny
knives stabbed into his brain.
“Alex! Are you ok?” Danielle asked.
“I’m fine.” He pried his eyes open slowly, trying to give
them time to adjust. There was no way anyone could spend
years in darkness and not feel tremendous pain with their
first glimpse of sunlight. The burning continued intensely,
but he had every intention of seeing this through.
While the sun rose ever so slowly, he felt joy spreading
within him but it also felt like there was a molten warmth
spreading there as well. Determined to ignore any feelings of
discomfort, he kept his eyes on the expanse before him.
The sun made its final assent when a volcano erupted
inside of him and filled his veins with scorching lava.
“Noooo!” Alex cried out and clutched his free hand to his
stomach.
“Jeremiah! His hands!” Now, Danielle’s voice was close to
hysteric. Even as Alex crumpled to the ground, she would
not let go of his hand.
His skin felt like bubbling hot wax. He wrenched his eyes
away from the sunrise to look at his hands and saw large
smoking burns on his skin. His mouth opened to scream, yet
nothing came out.
Alex quickly returned his eyes to the sky. He didn’t care
that he was burning or that he couldn’t speak; it seemed as if
every feeling and thought faded into the background. He
knew he was in some kind of trouble, yet, to him, it was all
happening in slow motion.
Alex refused to look away from the sun.
“Alex! Close your eyes!” Jeremiah hollered at him.
He didn’t think about Jaiden or Isabella or even God, only
about himself. Overcome by the joy of the moment, he
refused to see what was happening to him.
“Alex, do it!”
He heard Danielle’s voice in the distance.
“Danielle, take his legs.”
Smoke rose into Alex’s line of vision.
“We have to get him into the basement. It is the safest
place,” Jeremiah told Danielle.
“Hurry, let’s get him.”
Alex couldn’t speak. He couldn’t tell them to stop. He
wasn’t sure if it was because he could not speak or because he
was so mesmerized by the rising sun. He could feel them
dragging him across the porch.
No, no, no, he told himself. He wouldn’t let them take
from him what he had missed most all of those years. Anger
welled up inside him. How could they do that, knowing how
much it meant to him? How could they take away his
moment?
Alex had no idea how badly he was injured. He had no
idea what it could do if he stayed in the sunlight much
longer. Danielle, who was very strong, was at his feet, but
Jeremiah was mortal and old, which made him weak.
Jeremiah held him underneath each of his arms and
attempted to drag Alex into the house. Suddenly, to their
surprise, Alex twisted violently and landed face down on the
wooden porch.
His legs had come free from Danielle’s grip and he started
to crawl back into the sunlight.
Danielle screamed, “Get him, Hurry!”
Jeremiah grabbed the back of his coat and yanked back
but his strength was nothing compared to Alex’s. Jeremiah
lost his grip and fell on his backside.
Yes, yes! Alex thought. I am going to make it. I am going to
live in the day!
Common sense had completely left him and they were
dealing with a crazed vampire.
Suddenly, his head was forced down onto the porch and
the rest of his body was flattened against it too. Danielle had
tackled him like a football player. She sat atop his body and
held his hair in her fist.
“I’m sorry, Alex.”
With that, she pulled his head back and slammed it into
the porch, face first, with her incredible strength.
