Interview & Excerpt of Love Bats Last by Pamela Aares

Pamela Aares - Love Bats Last Banner

1.Can you please share with us a little about yourself:

I write contemporary and historic romance. I live in the coastal wine country just north of San Francisco with my husband and two rascal cats. Most of my life I lived in cities so the organic garden (feels like a small farm on most days) and the country life is still very new to me.

2. Have you always wanted to be an author?

I’m lucky to have had a family that loves stories. My great-great uncle James was a famous American poet and the love of language and storytelling stayed in the family. I wrote my first play in grade school and fell into the power of story. I went on to write and produce documentaries for PBS and National Public Radio. I also wrote grants and ran national and international campaigns to improve the lives of wild animal and their habitats—story is at the heart of any good grant proposal and it’s the stories of the animals and their lives that grabs people’s hearts and creates change for the better. I moved away from writing documentaries and started writing romance in 2004. In some ways romance picked me—I’m convinced that love powers everything in the universe!

3. What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I love heroes and heroines that walk off with the story and that challenge each other so strongly that by the end of the book nothing can pull them apart. As far as personal, writing craft quirks? I make story maps. My walls look like something out of the film “A Beautiful Mind—papers taped to the walls, yellow and pink and green stickies all over the room. Sometimes guests walk in and their jaws drop. They’d never imagined the craft that lives behind a good book.

4. Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Love Bats Last is the first book of my series,The Heart of the Game. The series features hot, alpha-male All-Stars—athletes at the top of their game—and the strong, unique and feisty women who challenge them and whom they come to love. The women in the series have amazing careers. Jackie Brandon, the heroine of Love Bats Last, is an internationally recognized marine mammal veterinarian (but what the hero doesn’t know is that she’s also the daughter of an English earl).

5. How did you come with the idea for this story?

I had just drafted the sequel to Jane Austen and the Archangel and had a fine sense of accomplishment! Readers had been asking for the story of Gabriel, Archangel Michael’s bad boy accomplice. But as sometimes happens, Alex Tavonesi, the hero of Love Bats Last, showed up as my husband and I drove back to San Francisco from LA. By the time we arrived home, Alex and his wealthy, quirky cousins and his hot All-Star teammates were clamoring for stories of their own.

6. Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
Thrown by Love, it’s the second book in the Heart of the Game series. Here’s a synopsis:

Ace pitcher Scotty Donovan has been traded from his longtime team—and hates it. But to his surprise, he now finds himself in the sweetest game of his life: winning the heart of smart, sexy physics professor Chloe McNalley. Chloe loves teaching, but she’s never fit into academia. When she falls for Scotty, she discovers his arms and heart are where she belongs. They share a passion for the game, a fascination for the mysteries of the universe and an increasing love for one another. Then Chloe inherits Scotty’s new team. As player and team owner, they shouldn’t be dating. They try to hide their passion, until a blackmailer threatens them personally and professionally. Exposure could be the end of everything–Scotty’s career, Chloe’s team ownership, and their new love—unless they find a way to transcend the taboo standing between them.

7. Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I’m lucky, I got to meet and spend some time with Nora Roberts. She’s given me some of the best advice ever. I’d like to meet Catherine Coulter—we’ve traded e-mails but I’ve yet to meet her. Her Midsummer Magic was the first romance I ever read (if you don’t count Jane Austen—if I could time travel, I’d love to meet Jane!).

8. What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Just do it. As Nora says, you can’t edit a blank page. And join a writing group, they help immensely. But mainly, write!

9. Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

Someday my husband and I would like to travel to Africa and see the animals in the wild. It’s just a dream for now.

10. What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’m reading seven novels for the Romance Writer’s of America RITA awards. So I can’t say what they are, but there are good books headed the way of readers, I can say that!

11. Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks for having me. This is such a great time to be a writer—the rich conversation and flow between readers and writers is better than ever. I am always so touched when I hear that someone loved one of my stories, it means so much.

In LOVE BATS LAST, author Pamela Aares introduces you to the Heart of the Game series. Get ready for All-Star alpha males and the strong women they come to love!

A stormy night changes their lives forever…

The baseball diamond isn’t the only field for all-star player Alex Tavonesi; he also runs his family’s prestigious vineyard. What he can’t seem to run is his love life. He’s closing in on the perfect vintage and the perfect game, but so far the perfect woman has eluded him.

Veterinarian Jackie Brandon is eluding her aristocratic past and memories of a soccer star who jilted her just before their wedding. She devotes herself to a marine mammal rescue center on the northern California coast, where hundreds of seals and sea lions are washing up dead.

A chance meeting in a midnight storm brings Alex and Jackie together to rescue a stranded whale. Watching her work, he realizes she’s the passionate, courageous woman he thought he’d never find–he just has to overcome her deep distrust of jocks. Jackie’s passion and courage lead her to discover what’s killing the sea mammals. The culprits want to silence her, and Alex is the only one standing in their way. What will he sacrifice to save the woman he loves?

Chapter One

She should’ve asked for help.Jackie gunned the motor and ran the inflatable Zodiac up onto the muddy riverbank. At eight that morning, putting in downriver to collect soil and water samples had been a good idea. At two in the afternoon, the work was grueling. She should’ve listened to Gage and brought an intern. Somebody. Anybody. She tied the stern line of the Zodiac to an overhanging willow branch. A startled kingfisher squawked at her and flew upriver. She looped the strap of her backpack over her arm and slid over the side of the boat. Her feet sank deep into the mud. Cold water seeped over the top of her boots, and she grabbed at the willow branch and fought to keep her balance. She dragged her feet out of the mud and stomped up onto a crescent of beach, muttering under her breath. She’d take climbing a solid wall of granite over mincing about on slippery riverbeds any day.

Stepping carefully, she inched along to where a narrow trail led up from the river. Thick willows lined the riverbank and hid everything above them. Deer tracks in the mud told her this was a place where animals came for an evening drink.

Shielding her face with her hand, she squinted upriver. If she worked fast, she could cover another mile, maybe two, before dark, gathering water samples along this stretch of river. She’d still have time to get back to her truck, winch the Zodiac onto its trailer and drive the samples back to the lab.

Nothing she’d discovered in the past two weeks added up. Someone had dumped a massive amount of fertilizer near the mouth of the river where it met the San Francisco Bay. The fertilizer had caused the worst diatom bloom ever recorded in the North Bay, and the bloom was killing harbor seals in the area. But fertilizer was expensive. Dumping that much fertilizer made no sense.

It was more than a puzzle to solve.

They’d rescued twenty seals in just the past week and however the stuff was getting into the water, she was determined to stop whoever was responsible. Seals and whales, all the marine animals, had enough problems without adding dumped chemicals into the mix.

She shrugged her backpack off her shoulders and pulled out her GPS and map. The map showed two vineyards just above where she’d landed, the first of several north of where the Susul River met the San Francisco Bay. She pulled her notebook and a sample jar from the backpack. Water lapped at her feet as she squatted to scoop some of the muddy soil into the jar. She snapped on the lid and wrote the coordinates on the front label.

She stuffed the sample jar and map into her knapsack and tossed it over the side of the Zodiac. With a flick of her hand, she freed the line from the willow branch and turned to push the boat from the tiny beach. It didn’t budge.

Bracing herself in the mud, she put her shoulder against the pontoon and shoved hard. It didn’t move even a fraction of an inch.

Great.

She was two miles from where she’d parked her truck downriver and didn’t relish the idea of trying to find a vineyard hand to help her. There’d be questions. Questions she wasn’t prepared to answer, not yet.

She walked to the bow of the Zodiac. It jutted up, maybe just enough for her to hang her weight from the front and pop up the midsection. She stepped into the river and sucked in her breath as she sank neck deep into an eddy pool. Feeling with her feet, she found a flat rock that gave her solid footing. She reached up and wrapped the bowline around her hands and tugged her full weight against it. Her hands slipped and she splashed back into the chilly water.

“It’s a bit early in the season for a swim.”

Adrenaline shot through her as she scrambled to her feet. A tall and ridiculously handsome man stood blocking the trail. He looked like he’d been airlifted out of a men’s fashion magazine. He squatted, bringing him to her eye level. She froze, unprepared for the intensity of his gaze. He had deep blue eyes, the color of the sea before a storm. Those eyes crinkled as a slow, easy smile curved his lips.

“Just testing the water,” she said with a bravado she didn’t feel.

Goose bumps rose along her arms as she sloshed out of the water and stepped onto the riverbank. She wished they were just from the cold. To give her hands something to do, she brushed ineffectively at the mud on her jeans.

“Can I give you a hand?”

He held a half-eaten sandwich, one of those piled-high deli sandwiches that Americans loved. Her stomach grumbled; she’d forgotten her own lunch. But this was no time to be thinking about food.

He didn’t look dangerous. But the expensive-looking slacks and perfectly tailored shirt he wore were out of place. She was from England—she knew a custom-tailored shirt from a Savile row tailor when she saw one. Why anyone would be wearing a three-hundred-dollar shirt and Prada loafers in river brambles was anybody’s guess.

“No,” she said, backing up a step. “I was just leaving.”

His assessing gaze sent a shiver down her spine, pushed it deep. She tugged at her shirt. Wet and plastered against her skin, it was almost transparent. She didn’t have to look down to know he could see her nipples puckered from the chilled water. She wished she’d taken the time to put on a bra.

She glanced up, and he quickly averted his eyes. Every cell in her body suddenly said flee.

She leaned over the pontoon and grabbed her backpack, rummaged to the bottom, found her jacket and pulled it on. She felt his eyes on her once again as she tugged up the zipper. At least she didn’t feel naked anymore.

She put a hand on the Zodiac, wishing that her touch would magically free it.

“What brings you up here? I don’t see many people boating in this stretch of river—just the occasional kayaker doing some bird watching. It’s mighty shallow.”

He gave her the perfect answer.

“I was looking for nesting clapper rails.”

“That shouldn’t take long,” he said. “There’ve only been a few sightings in this area since I’ve lived here. They’re endangered, you know.”

The man knew something about birds. And he was local. Could be good. Could be bad.

“I know.”

He quirked his brow. “And you’d be more likely to find clapper rails in the fields, wouldn’t you?”

He thought she was a clueless bird watcher. She should’ve chosen a different bird, but she really didn’t know the birds of the region all that well, except for the marine birds.

The man smiled again.

A smile shouldn’t send a zip of unnerving energy straight into her, but it did. She’d sunk herself in her work for so long, studiously avoiding exactly that kind of smile. He had the ease of a man who knew the effect he had on women. An ease she knew only too well, having once fallen prey to it at the hands of another man who knew how to wield his charm and allure.

She looked away from his face and down to his hands.

“Nice-looking Zodiac,” he said. “But you couldn’t have come up from the bay. It’d take you half a day with that small motor. You put in somewhere south of here?”

An observant man. Usually she liked that type. She tried not to be dazzled by his near perfect physique and a face that was more handsome than any man should be allowed. It was distracting. And dangerous. That she also knew from experience.

“I might ask what you’re doing here,” she said, deflecting. She eyed the Zodiac, assessing another approach to freeing it from the mud.

“Eating,” he said with the same dazzling smile.

A wise guy. From his polished American accent and fine clothing, obviously a very wealthy and well-educated wise guy. But he didn’t have the body of a businessman.

He grinned and waved the sandwich at her.

“There’s a great deli about two hundred feet from here. Can I buy you a sandwich? You look like you could use one.”

She dragged her hair away from her face. She’d love a sandwich. But there was a mile of river to sample between here and the vineyard properties to the north. And she didn’t want to answer questions. He looked like the type to ask plenty of them.

“Thanks, but I have to get back.”

“Back where?”

Right. Not the cleverest of responses on her part.

“Back to, um…”

Jeez. Tracking down water samples had made her feel like she was in some sort of cheesy spy novel or something. This guy was just a guy having lunch near his local deli. Right. Dressed in expensive clothes and eating a sandwich by a really crummy spot in the river. She might be good at chasing down the mysteries of marine mammals, their lives, their health and the way the bigger picture affected them, but she was never much good at figuring out people.

“Back to work,” she said flatly.

“Where do you work? Can’t be around here.”

It was a simple question, a question she’d answered hundreds, maybe thousands of times. She hated to lie, usually didn’t have any reason to, but it was hard to ignore the small voice telling her to do just that. Maybe the sun had addled her brain. And she hadn’t been sleeping well. She’d read that lack of sleep could make you paranoid, make you read things into situations that weren’t there. She really should get more sleep.

“I work at the California Marine Mammal Center,” she said as she pulled her foot from the muck and edged closer to the Zodiac.

“The seal hospital near the Golden Gate Bridge?”

The Center was known for their quick response in rescuing injured marine mammals, doctoring them up and returning them to the ocean, but the work went far beyond that. Yet right now she didn’t feel like explaining.

She nodded.

“I’ve been meaning to get over there. For about ten years,” he said with a laugh.

“Evidently not a priority,” she said, trying not to like the sound of his laugh. “Or if it is, maybe you’re direction challenged?” She hadn’t meant to engage him, but his smooth manner was like oil on a hillside, and she just kept sliding along.

He sprang up from his crouch with a catlike, almost effortless, motion and took a couple steps down the path toward her. She stepped back and nearly lost her balance as her foot sank into the mud.

She fisted her hands against her hips, and he stopped walking.

“I heard you’re having a rash of seal deaths,” he said, suddenly serious. “Any clues as to what’s causing the diatom bloom?”

Her breath hitched in her chest. People in the Bay Area knew about the seal strandings; reports been all over the news. But most didn’t know about the diatom bloom or if they did, they didn’t get the connection. Maybe he was a scientist. But he didn’t look like a scientist. Scientists never had muscles like his.

“It’s too early to tell.” At least it wasn’t a complete lie. It was too early to tell. “I really have to be going.”

She turned and pushed her shoulder against the pontoon. Color crept into her face. She was stuck, in more ways than one.

“Here,” he said as he closed the distance between them. He bent down and put the sandwich on a rock. “Hop in. I’ll shove you off.”

She tilted her head and shaded her eyes. Maybe he could do it; he looked incredibly strong. His shoulders reached beyond those of most normal men. Only movie thugs and athletes had shoulders like that.

God, she was being ridiculous. Letting him shove her off was the best solution. Maybe the only one.

“Okay,” she said.

Their gazes locked, and she felt both trapped and held.

“I don’t bite,” he said.

There it was again, that easy, wide smile. She was really losing it if she could let herself be charmed by a stranger standing on a riverbank.

Before she could move away, he closed his hands around her waist and lifted her over the side of the boat.

“Straddle the pontoon on the opposite side,” he said as he released her. “Lean into it.”

The confidence of his tone told her he was used to giving orders.

He walked to the bow of the boat and stepped into the water. She noticed that he didn’t fall into the eddy pool. Maybe he knew this stretch of river very, very well.

She hung her weight against the pontoon and watched his arm muscles work as he gripped the bow line and levered his shoulder against the boat. With perfect control he tipped the bow down. The bottom of the boat sucked up off the riverbed with a sigh and a slurp, and with a firm, steady motion, he pushed the boat into the river.

“You might need this.” He grinned and tossed the bow line over the side. She caught it with one hand.

“Nice catch,” he said as he stepped out of the water.

Mud covered his expensive shoes and stained up his pant legs. He apparently didn’t notice or didn’t care.

Her hands shook as she started the engine. Only then did she remember she hadn’t thanked him. She waved and shouted thanks over the buzz of the motor.

“My name’s Alex,” he said as he waved and stared after her. “Maybe I’ll see you around these parts again.”

Not if she could help it. Maybe he wouldn’t notice that she was headed north, upriver to the vineyards. Besides, why would he care?

“There aren’t any marine mammals up that way,” he shouted with a puzzled smile. “No clapper rails either.”

She shrugged and looked resolutely upriver.

So much for not noticing.

Interview with Melissa Stevens

Jade_s_Peace_Melissa_Stevens_Banner

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Melissa Stevens to the blog today.

Melissa, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I never know what to share, or quite how to say it without coming off as one of those old dating videos you used to see in movies. I always feel awkward and cheezy.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Actually, no. For years I had no clue what I wanted to do. All through school nothing really spoke to me. For a little while I wanted to be an archeologist, but I quickly lost interest. I didn’t find writing fiction until I was past 30, but once I started, I never looked back.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I can’t write in silence. I’ve been known to write in a crowded sports bar during a play off football game and at the field while my kids practice their own sports, at home I often have headphones onto block out the kids, they’re way to distracting.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?JP600x900

My latest book is Jade’s Peace, it’s the first full length book in my new WMC (White Mountain Chanat) series. Jade and Steve have known each other since they were kids but they haven’t seen each other in years. Now, things have changed and they both have their own issues.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

It just kind of came to me, Steve was an existing character from a short story I’d already done (ESCAPE, it’s currently free just about everywhere) and I wanted to do something with him. Then Jade came to me. It was supposed to be a short easy read novel, longer than Escape, but still simple, but Jade told me, in no uncertain terms, that it was gonna take more than 150 pages to tell their story.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

Right now I’ve got three. A sequel to this one, I won’t tell you a lot, other than you meet the characters in this one. Another piece I’m working on is the fourth book in my Kitsune series. The third is another contemporary, non-paranormal romance, similar to my Robin’s Nest.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

Laurell K. Hamilton. Because I want to BE Anita Blake when I grow up and maybe she can give me some pointers.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Write ever day, and keep writing, it doesn’t have to be good, it just has to be THERE. You have to get that first draft finished, whether or not it’s crappy, because you can fix crappy, you can’t fix nothing.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

Visit Australia

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Rule Breaker by Lora Leigh, I eagerly await all Breed books and read them as soon as I can get my hands on them.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

When you find something you love to do, pursuit it with all you’ve got, cause you might make mistakes and regret trying things, but in the end, you’ll be glad you at least tried.

She started reading at a very young age, and her love for series started early, as the first real books she remembers reading is the Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner. Through the years she’s found that there’s little she won’t read, and her tastes vary from westerns, to romance, to sci-fi / fantasy and Horror.

Welcome to Books-n-Kisses Margaret, can you please share with us a little about yourself?

I’ve been writing for thirty-five years and have sold 92 books. Recently I began putting my out of print books out. I write full-time now, but I used to teach school (high school students with special needs) until I retired. I have a husband, one son and four granddaughters. I love to spend time with them and my friends going to a movie and lunch.

Have you always wanted to be an author

I’ve have always been a storyteller but not until I was an adult did I think of being a writer.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

If a word is underlined red in my manuscript indicating it is misspelled, I have to stop and find the right spelling.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Dangerous Pursuit is the first book in The Protectors Series (Dangerous Interlude and Dangerous Paradise are the other two books). Dangerous Pursuit is my take on Romancing the Stone.

primitive headhunters and very up-to-date gunmen, she struggles to keep their relationship strictly business. Will Samantha survive the dangers in the jungle only to have her heart broken by a man who lives on the edge—no strings attached?

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I always loved romantic adventure with suspense and the Amazon has fascinated me. So I asked myself what would happen if you were down in an environment totally alien to you with people after you?
Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
I’m currently working on a novella tied to my Guardians, Inc. Series(about female bodyguards for Love Inspired Suspense). This novella will come out in March in an Inspy Kisses collection with five other authors.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
I’ve been lucky. I’ve meet a lot of the authors I admired. Last year I meet my favorite author, James Rollins, at the RWA national conference. I was thrilled and really enjoyed talking with him.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Not to get discouraged and keep writing. I had an eight year dry spell after publishing 20 books. When it ended, I went on to publish over 70 more books.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
To go to Australia. I’ve always wanted to go there.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
A James Rollins’ book on my iPad. It’s calling my name as I type.

Coming Soon Dangerous Interlude and Dangerous Paradise

Excerpt: Chapter One from Dangerous Pursuit by Margaret Daley

As Samantha Prince leaned forward to straighten the books on a lower shelf, her long braid fell across her shoulder. Impatiently she flipped it back, considering again whether she should cut it short. Some people called her hair-color auburn; she called it red. Fiery-haired auburns were the heroines in the romance books she read. The color did not describe her.

“Samantha, what do you think of this book? I’m going out of town again and need something to keep me warm at night,” a stylish businesswoman in her forties said.

“A very good mystery, Mrs. Carson, but I wasn’t impressed with the main character. Not enough backbone to get out of all the scrapes he and the heroine got into.”

“It sounds like more adventure than mystery. Once I start a good adventure I can’t put it down and end up reading through the night. All those cliff-hangers, you know.” Mrs. Carson scanned another book from a display near the checkout counter.

Samantha smiled to herself. Mrs. Carson always came into her bookstore right before a business trip and went through almost every book on the shelves, looking for just the right one that was a great story but wouldn’t keep her up past midnight. Samantha had never found a novel with both ingredients, and she read at least half the books that came through her store. It was her favorite pastime, to lose herself in the lives of the characters and imagine herself doing things that she would never do in her real life.

“Maybe I should try a romance this time,” Mrs. Carson continued, shifting her attention to another section. “The last mystery I read had me waking up every time I heard anything. And you know in a hotel how many sounds you can hear.”

Actually, she didn’t. She had never been anywhere, unless she counted visiting Aunt Lou. She had planned a trip to Europe two summers before but had to cancel it. She was beginning to believe her lack of travel experience was a crime at the age of thirty.

“A good love story,” Samantha said, indicating the book Mrs. Carson picked up. “That ought to keep you warm at night. It’s very hot.”

She waved her hand to show just how hot the book was. While Mrs. Carson examined both books again, Samantha glanced around at the rows of bookshelves. After three years her business was doing very well—at least well enough for her to afford a vacation. Maybe she’d go to some exotic place, she thought as Mrs. Carson decided to buy both the romance and the mystery.

When Mrs. Carson left the Purple Ink, the noise of New Orleans traffic and a blast of cold air rushed into the shop. Samantha shivered and pulled the front of her brown sweater more securely across her chest. Somewhere exotic and warm, she amended. In her mind the only good thing to come from cold weather was curling up in bed under layers of wool blankets with a great book to read while sipping a steaming cup of hot chocolate with lots of marshmallows in it.

Tonight, she vowed as she began to finish restocking the shelves of the adventure section. Pausing to examine a cover on one book, she was instantly reminded of her younger brother, Mark, who traveled the world, going from one adventure to the next while she remained in New Orleans, working day after day to make Purple Ink a success. The biggest adventure Samantha ever encountered was the rush hour traffic on Interstate 10.

Sighing heavily, she completed her task and noted it was time to close up for the day. Standing, she stretched to ease the ache in her lower back. It was time to start exercising again. The holiday season had been busy, and she got out of the routine once Thanksgiving had passed. Now it was the first of February, and she had ignored her better sense and found excuse after excuse not to get back to it. Though exercising would never head her list of favorite things to do, she promised herself to sign up for a new aerobics class. Soon. Maybe in a month or so.

“Samantha, I’m going. I’ll see you tomorrow morning at nine thirty,” Nell, Samantha’s assistant, said as she gathered up her purse and coat.

“Don’t forget we have to start the inventory tomorrow. Can you stay late?”

“Yes.”

“I have everything lined up, so it shouldn’t take as long as last year.”

Nell shook her head. “You are the most organized human being I’ve ever met. If I know you, you’ll have devised a way to cut our time nearly in half.”

“Oh, at least. Why else invest in a computer?” Samantha laughed and waved her friend on.

Nell was always teasing Samantha about how neat and orderly she was. But she had practically raised her younger brother while her mother had worked to support them. As a teenager she had juggled school, part-time work, and housework. It hadn’t been easy, but her mother and younger brother had depended on her, so she had learned to be organized the hard way.

Samantha went through the same routine to close her shop as she had done ever since she had bought it. After one final survey of her store, she went out the back door to her car.

Mark always laughed about her and her routines, but they gave her a sense of security and stability that was important to her. Neither she nor Mark, as children, nor their mother, had had much of either. It didn’t seem to bother her brother, but it did bother her.

When she finally arrived at her house after grocery shopping, exhaustion from a long day gripped her. She picked up the bag of food and was planning her dinner as she stepped into her house. The phone was ringing, and she nearly dropped the bag as she rushed to pick up the receiver.

“Hello, Samantha Prince speaking.”

“Sam! You’re home finally. Why isn’t your cell working?” Her brother’s voice was faint, but he sounded frantic.

“Mark, what’s wrong? Where in the world are you?” Samantha set the grocery bag on the kitchen table and dug in her purse for her cell phone. She’d left it on silent, something she did often.

“Manaus.”

The long distance connection wasn’t a good one, and Samantha had to strain to hear his answer. “The Amazon?”

“Yes.”

“The last I heard you were in Rio. Why are you there?” She had read plenty of books set in the jungle and couldn’t imagine anyone wanting to go there.

“It’s a long story. I don’t have the time to go into it.”

The tone of her brother’s voice, laced with impatience, alarmed Samantha. Tiny prickles of fear rose on the nape of her neck. “Why did you call?” She forced her voice to remain calm while her grip tightened on the receiver. He was her only close relative, their mother having died four years before. Though they didn’t see each other a lot, she loved him very much and their relationship was a good one.

“I need a thousand dollars to get out of here. I needed it yesterday. Can you send me the money?” Mark’s voice faded in and out.

“You said you need a thousand dollars?”

“Yes, Sis. Fast.”

There was no mistaking the desperation in his answer. The tingles of fear quickly spread down her body. “Are you in some kind of trouble?” As a child she had rescued her brother from a few situations. He had always been daring; there was a bold recklessness about him that was very appealing, yet dangerous too. They were like night and day.

He laughed, but there was no amusement in the sound. “You could say that. I have someone who would like to get his hands on me. Can you wire it, Sis?”

“Yes, of course. But I can’t do anything until tomorrow morning. Everything is closed.”

He mumbled something she couldn’t understand, then said in a clear voice, “I’ll try to make—wait for it.”

“Where are you staying?”

“The Grand Hotel. It doesn’t live up to its name, but it’s all I could afford.”

“Can I send it to you there?”

“No! I’ll have to pick it up at the bank. It’s safer. I can’t trust anyone.”

Samantha shuddered. “Safer? Mark, please tell me what’s going on.”

Static crackled over the line, and Samantha placed her hand over her other ear as if that would help her hear him better.

“If anything happens to me, Sam, there’s something of great value under the altar of the Para Mission church. Got that?”

“Yes, but—”

There was the sound of male voices in the background, then Mark said quickly, “Got to go. Love you.”

The phone went dead.

Samantha collapsed into a chair, her whole body trembling. She thought about pinching herself; surely she had dreamed the telephone conversation. But the fear and sense of urgency reminded her of the reality of the phone call, and she was chilled with dread.

Something of great value under the altar of the Para Mission church?

What? How was Mark involved? Was it something illegal? Why was he running scared? And from whom? Her mind felt as if it would explode from all the unanswered questions bombarding her.

A thousand dollars! That would wipe out most of her savings for her vacation, but if Mark was in trouble, Samantha would sell her house and her bookstore if she had to.

If Mark was in trouble. From the sound of his voice he was in trouble. She knew she would be at the bank first thing in the morning.

* * *

Samantha stood frozen, holding her check for one thousand dollars in both hands. Mark hadn’t picked it up. It was hard for her to believe that her money had been returned that morning. But if he was going to pick it up, Mark would have in a week’s time.

Her hands began to shake, and she almost dropped the check. What or who had prevented her brother from getting the money?

The questions she had been avoiding all morning invaded her thoughts, and she sank into her desk chair in the back of her bookstore.

“What should I do?” she asked the silent walls.

Call! She’d call him at the Grand Hotel in Manaus. Maybe he was still there and didn’t need the money anymore and that was why he hadn’t picked it up. Maybe everything was fine now. Maybe the moon really was made of cheese.

Apprehensive about what she would find out, Samantha placed an international call to Brazil. When the man who answered at the hotel couldn’t speak English, she was at a loss.

“May I speak with Senor Prince?” Samantha spoke very slowly and in a loud voice, as if that would make things clear. She had never been good at learning foreign languages and envied her brother, who knew five fluently.

The stream of words that followed was unintelligible. Frustrated, Samantha finally hung up, concluding there was no Senor Prince at the Grand Hotel. Next she put a call through to Mark’s apartment in Rio and prayed that her brother would answer. On the twentieth ring she gave up and slammed the phone down, even more frustrated than before. Her fear returned in full force.

For five minutes she stared at the check, her mind churning with possible courses of action. Suddenly she turned to her laptop and punched in an address. Five minutes later she’d booked a flight to Rio.

She would go to Mark’s place in Rio and find out what she could about his whereabouts. Since he was no longer at the hotel in Manaus, maybe he had returned to Rio and wasn’t in his apartment at the moment. She would keep calling until she had to leave the next morning. She prayed she was panicking for no reason.

Thirty minutes later she was on her way home to pack for Brazil, having left a stunned Nell behind to run the bookstore. When she had thought about a vacation in a warm, exotic place last week, this wasn’t how she had envisioned planning it. Samantha had imagined herself going to a travel agent and getting plenty of brochures on different tropical locales. Then she would have gone home, spread them all out on her kitchen table, and slowly read through each one until she had narrowed her selection down to one. Everything would have been done in an orderly, slow fashion. Wasn’t part of the joy of a vacation the anticipation beforehand?

While sitting at a stoplight, her conversation with Nell returned to Samantha’s mind.

“I can’t believe you’re dropping everything to go to Brazil to look for your brother! This isn’t you. You don’t do things like this,” Nell had said.

“My brother doesn’t disappear like this either. I can’t sit here and wonder what’s happened to him. I’ve got to find out. I can’t get any answers over the phone.”

“So you’re flying thousands of miles to get some answers?”

“Do you know of a better way?”

Nell had shaken her head. “Don’t worry about the shop. I’ll take care of it. If your brother calls, what should I tell him?”

“Find out where he is and tell him to stay put. I’ll check in with you every few days.” Horns blared behind Samantha, and she realized she was sitting at a green light with angry motorists waiting on her. Embarrassed, she gunned her engine and sped forward.

She welcomed the familiarity of her small house, and before attempting to pack, she fixed herself a cup of hot tea and sat down at the kitchen table to organize what she had to do in the next twelve hours before she left for Rio.

Passport. Thank goodness she had one from that aborted trip to Europe.

Clothes? What kind of clothes should she take to Rio? Wasn’t it summer there? Clothing for a hot, humid environment. A couple of sundresses. Maybe a pair or two of shorts. A bathing suit. Sandals.

The last thing Samantha put on her list of necessities was the latest book she was reading, Jungle Fever. It was part of a shipment that had arrived at the store the previous day. Samantha had been drawn to the title because of Mark, but now she could hardly put it down. It was an engrossing tale of adventure and intrigue by a new author whom Samantha thought would go far. She had gotten to the part where the hero had just rescued the heroine from a tribe of headhunters and they were fleeing for their lives.

With her list completed, she began packing and finished at eleven. After showering and getting ready for bed, she tried to sleep, but her mind danced with images of her brother, herself, and his unknown enemy. She sat up in bed, switched on the light, and started reading the next chapter of her book.

Harper swung the machete, striking the thick undergrowth over and over. The swish of the blade filled the jungle stillness with the urgency of their escape. Diana clung to Harper’s hand, glancing constantly over her shoulders as they raced through the jungle. She could hear the Indians behind her. She could imagine their savage faces as the headhunters followed, so sure she and Harper would be caught. This was the headhunters’ territory. They ruled it as they had for hundreds of years: by fear.

Samantha was immediately whisked into another world and didn’t put the novel down until she couldn’t keep her eyelids open another minute. She glanced at her bedside clock and gasped. It was three in the morning. She had to leave at seven!

Sleep finally descended, but it was a restless sleep, saturated with pictures of painted Indians with lip discs and spears tipped in poison. Samantha tossed and turned, visualizing herself as Diana as she last read about her: standing at the top of a waterfall with a rushing river in front of her and the headhunters in back. Either way Diana went appeared to be instant death.

Cold reality returned the next morning as Samantha hurried to make her flight to Rio via Miami. She wasn’t able to catch her breath until the plane was in the air and the meal was being served.

Then the idea of what she was doing struck her with a powerful impact. She was flying down to Rio with one day’s notice, trying to locate her brother in one of the largest countries in the world. She wasn’t a detective and really knew nothing, other than what she had read, about what a detective did to find a missing person.

What was happening to the sensible, logical woman she was?

That question returned to plague her in Rio as she waited while her brother’s neighbor, whom Mark had said always had his spare key, let her into Mark’s place. Before her lay the wreckage of a once presentable bachelor’s apartment.

Everything was torn or shattered, nothing left untouched. Someone had searched this place very thoroughly, and she knew it was connected with Mark’s mysterious phone call the week before.

Samantha moved slowly into her brother’s apartment. Suddenly she knew the fear Diana felt looking down at the rushing river. And Samantha knew what she had to do next: go to the Amazon to Manaus.

Interview with Lynn Tyler

head shotWelcome to Books-n-Kisses Lynn, can you please share with us a little about yourself?

I was born and raised in South Western Ontario, Canada, where I still live. I married my first and only boyfriend and we have two young, very ambitious children. My seven year old decided three years ago that she wants to be a volcanologist when she grows up. My four year old has high aspirations of being a dishwasher when he grows up. The machine kind. He’s very specific.

I love to cook, bake, read, and dream about traveling the world.

Facebook |  Twitter @lynntylerbooks

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I have been writing stories as long as I can remember, but I never entertained the thought of writing for a living. I was very focused on what career could provide for my eventual family, (I was married very young).

I continued to write, even while I was working a day job and raising my family, until one day, two friends of mine encouraged me to send my work into a publisher.

Now, writing as afforded me the opportunity to work at home. I am thrilled to be able to do something I love, while being able to spend much more time with my family.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

One thing that people tend to find very quirky is that I can’t write in silence. Okay, that not’s very quirky, I know. However, if I listen to music or television in either English or French, I find myself typing the lyrics instead of dialogue.

So, what do I listen to? Korean pop music! The music is catchy, I can understand maybe 10% of what they’re singing, (so I have an idea of what the songs are about) but I don’t speak enough to actually copy the lyrics.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?LSB Cover Art Template for PhotoShop

The Wolf’s Tiger is book number three in the Pack Mate’s series. It features Gray, who was introduced in Micah’s Refuge, and a new character, Shannon Cho. Shannon gets very defensive over his name, because he is, indeed, a man.

For those who enjoyed Called to Mate and Micah’s Refuge, you’ll be happy to know that Declan and Quinn, as well as Shea and Micah, are featured in this book.

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

We first met Gray when I was writing about Shea and Micah. I immediately fell in love with him and knew he had to have his story written.

When I finally sat down to write his book, I was surprised when he popped up and showed me three little girls and a tiger. I knew he was comfortable in his sexuality and was quite aware that he’d never slept with a single woman. He was a “gold star gay,” as one of my gay friend’s put it. So I was a little stymied as to where these kids came from.

The more I let Gray tell me his story, the easier it became.

The tiger shifter did his fair share of popping, and soon, I had a finished book.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m currently working on the Pack Mate’s book 4. It features Michael and a character we meet in The Wolf’s Tiger.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

You want me to choose just one? Why don’t you just drive a stake into my heart?

If I have to choose just one author, it would have to be J.R. Ward. Of course, I would  probably fan girl, stare stupidly and  possibly ask for a lock of her hair. Okay, I’m not that bad. Maybe.

Her Black Dagger Brotherhood series is simply superb. If you haven’t read them yet, pick them up. You won’t be sorry!

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

My advice seems a little counterproductive but it’s something I’ve learned the hard way. Here it is: Know When To Quit.

This means a number of different things but there are two that stand out the most to me. Know when to quit revising. Honestly, I could work on a single book for the rest of my life but if I did that, nothing would ever get published. At some point, you need to put down your red pen and send your baby into the black hole called the internet.

The second meaning this has is a bit more drastic. Sometimes, you have to know when to quit writing the manuscript that just won’t move forward. Maybe you need to axe a scene. Maybe a chapter. I’ve gotten half way through a book, struggling with it the entire time, only to finally scrap the whole thing.

This just about killed me. I had spent months on this particular book and it just wasn’t working. Once I finally came to grips with what I had to do, I put the mess in a file and started something new. That something new was Micah’s Refuge.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

It is my dream to travel the world. I am enchanted with history and dream of touring Scotland, Ireland, and England. I would love to walk in the footsteps of all the people I have read about. And what author doesn’t want to visit the home of Shakespeare?

But I am also fascinated with the future and dream of visiting Tokyo, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea. Both cities are a mix of rich history and glimpses of the future.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Have I mentioned that I love J.R. Ward? I can’t wait until March for the release of The King. I wish I had a time machine so I could go forward in time and grab my copy now.

Is it possible to get addicted to books? Seriously, I think I need help.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

There is one question that I get asked all the time, and I would love to answer it now. The question is when are Adam and Cullen going to get their book?

They already have one! It’s a short story in the Beneath a Spring Moon collection from Liquid Silver Books.

Also, thank you for hosting me today. I had a hoot answering all the questions and would love to hear more from your readers.

Hunger Moon Excerpt #5

She caught the scent of a male wolf behind her. Her hackles rose when his whiskey voice mocked her. “Fie, foh, and fum, I smell the blood of a tiny woman.”

Victoria spun to face the offending male wolf intruder. Her upper lip peeled back to reveal her canines and a rumbling snarl issued from her throat. He towered over her, standing at least a foot and a half taller, and had at least a hundred pounds of lean muscle on her. He wore a short-sleeve tan shirt featuring a Chinese dragon, faded blue jeans, and black Doc Martens.

She assumed a defensive stance, extending her right hand to reach for her dagger, when he caught her gaze. She found no threat in his amber eyes, only naked lust and wicked humor. His generous mouth twisted into a smirk. In her assessment, he did not present an immediate physical threat.

“Well, halloo, Blondie. Has daddy found himself a new playmate?”

She modified her snarl into a cold smile. They might be wolves, but they were also human. She was a guest in his home. Relaxing her guard, she assessed him with an appreciative glance.

“You must be Logan.”

“I must be.” He regarded her with a lascivious leer.

Victoria rolled her eyes. She had no doubt. The physical resemblance to Arik became apparent upon consideration. Father and son shared the same high forehead, strong thin-profiled nose, cheekbones and jaw. The boy wore his light-brown hair in a spiky style and lacked his father’s sturdy build. Broad shoulders, long limbs, and a narrow waist kept with his youth. In time, he would fill out. She could tell he’d be huge once he reached maturity.

A quick glance over her shoulder revealed that the woman among the trees had vanished. With a shrug, Victoria dismissed the incident.

“You have me at a disadvantage. What’s your name?” Logan stepped forward, invading her personal space even more. He tilted his head back, mocking the surrender of his throat.

She refused to give ground, so they were almost touching. “Victoria Storm.”

“Victoria—sounds like an old lady,” Logan said. “Can I call you Vicky?”

“Do so and die.” Victoria glared. She expected he got away with murder, thanks to an uncanny beauty that even a distinct lack of charm failed to eradicate.

Logan threw back his head and laughed, further exposing his throat. He oozed arrogance from every pore. “Are you always so defensive, Vic?”

Her fists clenched, and she reined in the impulse to pummel him. “Does that facile charm work with the little high school girls? Do they call you Wolverine and swoon when you walk by?”

“Ouch.” He smirked. “You know, they do. Swoon. But I’m long out of high school and good ol’ dad is to blame for my namesake. Is it my fault he’s a secret comic book fan boy?”

“Our parents’ literary tastes are never our fault.” She felt his heat on her skin and longed to wrap her mouth around the thick column of his throat. He smelled delicious.

“The real question is whether it’s your fault that you’re a bitter disappointment to your father?” She delivered the final cut with a cruel smile.

A facial tick in his jaw showed she had scored a direct hit. His glib tongue formed a quick reply. “It’s always easier to slip under my father’s bar than to try to go over it.”

“A self-professed failure. I’m not surprised. After all, you’re still living at home, and let me guess, no job?”

Murderous anger drove the amusement from Logan’s eyes. He performed a pantomime of hurt, his hand pressed to his heart. “Wow, they really teach trailer trash how to be mean.”

Interview with JN Johnson

Can you please share with us a little about yourself

There isn’t really that much to tell. I am a mother of two beautiful daughters who keep me busy with school homework and volunteering. I have been married to my high school sweetheart going on fourteen years. When I am not with them hiking, fishing or watching cartoons I am a hermit.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
No actually I haven’t always wanted  to be an author. My goal as a child was to be a dentist. I wanted to be the one thing I feared the most so that other kids wouldn’t be scared. Writing was always there in the back of my mind. I had a friend that I used to write short stories with when I was 13 or 14 years old. We kept these old spiral notebooks full of adventures that we only wished we could have. I always thought she would be the one with her name on a book one day.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

Interesting? I am a pretty boring writer. I tend to sit down when the house is empty to write. I have the normal desk beside a window and I totally pants each and every story. But for a quirk I would say I like to have the tv on for background noise, Dean and Sam are my writing partners. Oh and lemonheads are a must while writing.
Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?
Ravens Legacy is my twist on the Ugly Duckling. Raven was adopted into a shifter community as an infant and longs for the one things she doesn’t have, an inner beast. She feels pressure from her father to find her mate and to try and fit in. One tiny accident that would be nothing but a splinter to anyone else causes her world to flip flop upside down. When the power of the Goddess unlocks her hidden inner self she is thrown into a whirlwind of drama. Not only is there a hot steamy man who drives her crazy but there is a villain who wants to chop her head off and use her blood to bring forth more evil. I hope that makes sense J
How did you come with the idea for this story?
I think I started Raven as a sort of therapy for me. After my daughter and I were in a house fire I have had issues with dealing with the smell of smoke and the heat of fires even if they are contained. I think this was my way of having power of that element. Now Raven was a total surprise. One day I sat down at my computer and started typing, a few hours later the story was born. I sat back wowed at what I had done and it just kept getting better from there.
Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
Currently I am working to see where this crazy journey is taking my dear Raven in the second Between Fire and Ice Novella. She keeps telling me that she needs to do this and I keep saying no do this but she is winning. I am also working on another shifter book that I have been throwing around for awhile. But that is still too new to share.
Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
Jane Austen, I want the answer to the age old question. Did she have a lover and if not how the hell did she write men like that without a muse?
What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Don’t stop. Take lots of advice and do your homework. It is a tough industry and you need thick skin to make it but the end result is so worth it.Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

My husband and I wrote our bucket lists when we were married, we have marked a few things off but going to Ireland is on there for us both. Someday…
What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
I am waiting for the next Chicagoland Vampire by Chloe Neill and the next Hollows book by Kim Harrison, it seems to be taking forever for them to be released!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you so much for having me on here today. I hope that you and your readers enjoy Ravens Legacy, she was fun to write and I hope that you come back to see where this crazy roller coaster takes me!

Raven’s Legacy

Raven Corvus has always felt like she was on the outside looking in. Being adopted into a family of shifters without the ability to shift has put her life on hold. Never wanting to take part in the Moon Ceremony or choosing a mate, she tends to distance herself from her people. When an accident lets loose a side of her that had been hidden for her protection she is forced to come to terms with whom and what she really is.

Griffin Snow serves as a protector for the Goddess in the fight against Dexius, the Dark God. When an old enemy returns to threaten one of his charges, he jumps into action to protect Raven—only to discover that she is not just his charge, but his fated mate. Hiding out in the safety of Griffin’s cabin only adds to the need growing inside of them.

Can Raven and Griffin save their people from the big, bad ugly or will they lose their chance at happiness?

Excerpt:

Raven watched as the sun set over the valley. The view from her front porch was utterly breathtaking in the spring. The stars lit up the sky like a blanket of glittering diamonds, the absence of the moon leaving them the only guides in the sky. It wouldn’t be long until she made her appearance known to Raven’s kind. The drawl of her moon song would be too strong to ignore. But no matter how loud the beat played in Raven’s head she wouldn’t be able to answer the call. Fate had given her a bum ride; she could hear and feel the drawl of the moon but her body wouldn’t respond. It was a cruel reality that she dealt with every month.

“Raven, get in here now! Your father needs your help getting ready for the ceremony.”

Her mother had a temper shorter than a dynamite fuse and it was burning fast from the stress of the Moon Ceremony. Once the moon showed herself in the eastern sky, in less than a week, their home would be flooded with other shifters preparing for the spring mating ritual.

“I’m coming, Mom.” She whispered a few choice expletives, but with a shifter’s hearing her mother had no trouble understanding her ramblings.

“Young lady, I know you are twenty-five, but you’re still my daughter and I will pull you over my knee.” Her mother’s goodhearted laugh let her know it wasn’t urgent. Nevertheless, the stress level was getting pretty damn high. “Now get out in the yard and help your father.”

Her father, TalfrynCorvus, had been planning the Moon Ceremony since he was chosen by the council last spring. He was to host the opening ceremonies of the mating ritual on their family lands. Ever since he had been chosen, he had become obsessed with every small detail, and had driven Raven to the brink of insanity.

She walked through the front doors and back into the chill night air. Her father was bent over placing stones around the center alter, preparing a small pit to contain the fire.

“Hey Dad, did you need me?”

“Yes, please take a seat.” He indicated one of the makeshift benches made from cut logs that now lined the yard. The smell of sawdust mixed with the sweet smell of spring. “Daughter, I think you understand how important this ceremony is to your mother and me. I need to know for sure that you understand your part. You don’t have to shift to be included in the ritual but you should try to commune with the Goddess. She will choose your mate.”

Upon their eighteenth birthday, shifters gathered at the change of each season under the first full moon to not only celebrate and dance but to find and seal the mating bond. Most shifters went into the ceremony with their intended mate, ready to make the commitment and start families. Others went with the intent of finding their mate among the flock. But not Raven.

“Dad, I understand. I’m just not ready.”

“You are twenty-five and have refused each chance at a mate. Why do you buck tradition? You could have any man in the flock you desire and yet you still choose none.”

Her father was right on one count. She did turn her nose up at the traditions of her people, and she couldn’t imagine tying herself to one person for the rest of her life. She wanted to be free, to be among the rest of humanity, and off of this damn mountain.

He was wrong to assume she had her choice of mates. Most of the men she knew were family, and the ones who could be potential mates kept a wide berth when she was around. She was born different from most shifters, with the moon closer to her heart than her non-existent beast, and it kept her from the one thing she really wanted.

“Daddy, you know how I feel about finding a mate. When the Goddess thinks I’m ready, she will bring him to me. Not a moment before.”

Author Bio:

Growing up in her hometown of Charleston WV, J.N spends her days wrangling her two beautiful daughters and super dog Bo and is married to her high school sweetheart, who she considers the rock that keeps her grounded to reality when she would rather be lost in the paranormal. If a book contained something supernatural there is a good chance that she has read it. Whether its vamps, shifters, elves or fairies it is most likely setting on her shelf waiting to be re-read.

Looking for a new genre she found the world of romance and fell in love. The drama and conflict are different but still enough to get the adrenaline pumping and the heart thumping to keep her coming back for more. It wasn’t long until the need to write came knocking at the door and by the grace of her husband’s patience and her children’s bed times she got that chance. Her twisted mind found a new outlet on paper and now her story has found a way onto your shelf or reader and she hopes that you enjoy reading it as much as she enjoyed writing.

Interview with Mary Ann Kempher

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Mary Ann Kempher to the blog today.

Mary, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I’m married with two children; a boy who is 15 and a girl who just turned 13; she’s the handful. I lived many years in Reno NV, where my first book; Mocha, Moonlight, and Murder is set. I spent 20 years in the Air Force

Have you always wanted to be an author?

No. I’ve always liked to write, but didn’t decide to write a book until about 5 years ago.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Instead of feeding her late-night appetite, a midnight food run nearly gets 28-year-old Katherine O’Brian killed. She’s the only person to see the man who brutally murdered a local woman, and the killer is hell-bent on making sure she doesn’t talk.

Scott Mitchell left a broken engagement behind when he moved to Reno, and the last thing he needs is more melodrama. But when he and Katherine are paired for a college project, that’s what he gets. It can be very distracting when someone is out to kill your lab partner. Together, they try to figure out what the police haven’t been able to—the identity of the murderer.

Passion flares, but with Katherine’s life in danger, romance seems like more than a bad idea.

Scott and Katherine will face jealousy, misunderstandings, lust, and rivals, not to mention attempted murder—and all before their first real date.

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

The story evolved, I’m what people call a “pantser”, so my story started out one way and ended up being totally different from the original concept
Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
I’ve just finished my second book, it’s a mystery set on a cruise ship where two people (so far) have been murdered. The head of security must find the killer before the ship returns to port. Still working on the title.Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

Both my favorite authors are dead, Jane Austen and Agatha Christie. At the moment, I’m reading a lot of Janet Evanovich. I wouldn’t mind meeting her.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Research the genre you want to write in. Research how to write a book, don’t just assume you can sit down and start writing. You can, but you’ll have less revisions if you do research first.
Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
I want to visit London some day. What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Anything and everything written by the fantastic author, Marni Mann.

Interview & Tour Wide Giveaway with Jessica Lee

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to have Jessica Lee on the blog again today.

Jessica, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Let’s see… I’m a wife, mother, former science geek with a passion for writing romance novels filled with alpha male characters who bite.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Believe it or not, if someone had told me 20 years ago that I’d end up becoming a published author, I would have sworn they were crazy. Back in college, I would drop a course if I had to write a paper. lol I just don’t think I’d found the right inspiration until later in life when I picked up my first paranormal romance.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

Possibly that I’m neither a plotter or a pantzer. lol  I’m a little of both worlds. I always know the beginning of a new story and how it may end, and then I plot a little bit at a time as I go along.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

My latest release is Undying Embrace, A Novel of the Enclave, book two.

In Undying Embrace we learn more about Enclave warrior Arran MacLain and the female member of the team, Gabrielle Stevens who’s claimed his heart. Both carry a ton of baggage from their past, and because of those issues, they continue to fight their attraction.

Arran is vampire on a mission to find his partner, Markus, the male who betrayed not only him but the Enclave. During his search, he runs into Gabrielle who is on a mission herself to locate her missing sister. Together, they have to put aside their personal pain and join forces to fight the evil that’s invaded both their worlds.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

As with most of my stories, I usually have no idea how they pop into my head. lol This is book two, so Arran and Gabrielle’s story had already sparked in Undying Destiny. Somehow my characters invent themselves inside my head and come to life as I pen their story.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

Currently I’m working on book three in the Ariel Estate series, Breaking the Ice. This series features my lion shifters! Next, I return to finishing book four in the Enclave series. Book three, Undying Desire, I expect Entangled Publishing to release the novel sometime in early 2014.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I’ve met Karen Marie Moning briefly once before at a luncheon and book signing, but it would be such an honor and amazing to spend a work day with her and pick her brain. lol  For me, she is a master story teller!

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Never give up, and never stop honing your craft. In my opinion, no matter how long you’ve been writing, there is always something more to learn.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

My bucket list…hmm…I’ve always wanted to travel through Ireland and Scotland on an extended vacation and tour all the beautiful castles.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Oh, that would be Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It’s next on my list followed by KMM’s upcoming release Burned!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you so much Books ‘n Kisses for the opportunity to stop by on my tour! Great questions!

Arran MacLain is a vampire on a suicide mission, driven to kill his former partner who betrayed him and the Enclave they served. But two things stand in his way: Gabrielle, the human female who holds his heart, and the past that won’t let him go. If only death was enough to cleanse his soul.

Gabrielle Steven’s sister is missing. Her hunt for clues brings her face to face with the one vampire she can’t forget. Their missions combine and thrust them into the heart of evil. Will their passion be enough to overcome the pain from their past, or will their dark desires destroy them both?

AuthorphotoJessicaLeeAuthor bio:

Almost every author’s bio states they’ve been writing since they learned how to read. It’s what they’ve always wanted to do. Well, my journey wasn’t so straight and narrow. I was a nurse for over twenty years and hold a bachelor’s degree in science with a major in biology. So as you can see, my career path had originally gone in the opposite direction. I didn’t discover my passion for the craft until after I’d had my son and decided to work part-time.

I’ve always loved to read but had never read a paranormal romance. Then one night at work on break, I began reading Karen Marie Moning’s Spell of the Highlander. I couldn’t believe what I’d been missing, and I immediately fell in love with the genre.

I wanted to write like that. I wanted to create worlds where others could find the same escape and fascination I did when I read my first sensual paranormal romance.

And I hope that’s what I’ve accomplished in my work. Please dive in, hold on tight, and enjoy the adventure. Just be careful in the dark—you might find more than you expected waiting for you there.

Jessica Lee lives in the southeastern United States with her husband and son. She loves writing and can’t wait for that quiet time each day when her son is in school, and she can get lost in another place and world with the fantastical, sexy creatures in her head.

Interview with TJ Bennett

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome TJ Bennett to the blog today .
TJTJ, can you please share with us a little about yourself
My father was career military, so I traveled quite a bit in my youth. I’ve been all over Europe, visited Morocco, and even managed to hit Australia in my older years. I think that is where my love of historicals comes from. Seeing all that history up close. I’ve also been a contract negotiator, an educator, a ghostwriter, a cake decorator, an editor, a dissertation reviewer, and currently I coordinate professional development programs for the staff of a state university in East Texas. I know, it sounds like I can’t hold down a job, right?  Learn more about TJ here: Website  Blog  Twitter  Goodreads  Newsletter
Have you always wanted to be an author?
Pretty much since I was eight years old. I stopped to do other things for a while (see my response to your first question), but the desire has always been in there somewhere.
What is your most interesting writing quirk?
I always have to go edit the last few pages I wrote before I can move on to the next part. It is my way of getting back into the mood and character of the story. That, and the munchies. Must have munchies when I write. That might be why I suffer from what is affectionately (or lamentably) known as “writer’s bottom (insert your own euphemism here).”
Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)? Dark Angel
When young widow Catherine Briton is washed ashore, the sole survivor of a violent shipwreck, all she wants is to go home to London. But injured as she is, she can’t escape when a shadowy stranger rescues her and takes her to his castle—where she’s healed with suspicious, almost magical speed.

The more time Catherine spends in the castle, the more her curiosity rises where her fiercely handsome new “master,” Gerard, is concerned. As she begins to investigate, though, her discoveries only bring more questions. It seems Gerard isn’t the only one on the island keeping secrets…The small town is full of strange mysteries and townspeople who know more than they should about her. And when a hulking beast that stalks the nearby hills and valleys catches up to her, Catherine must figure out what’s going on before it’s too late.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

The first line of the book came to me, and it just spun out from there. I felt much of the time I was working on it that the book was writing itself. It really isn’t like anything I’ve ever done before.
Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
I’m working on a late-Victorian set piece that has a lot of drawing room wit in it. At least I hope it does. I’m enjoying the characters and their banter and repartee.  The characters are showing up fully realized, another thing that is unusual for me, and it looks like there might be more than one story to tell there—several intriguing characters in star-crossed lover sort of tales. We’ll have to wait and see.
Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
Laura Kinsale. She is just brilliant. Her characters are multi-layered, complex, her research is extensive and yet seamlessly woven into the story and she always does something unexpected and smart. I’d love to just talk to her and find out how her brain works.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Make sure you do your homework, pay your dues, have very thick skin, and a whole lotta patience, because you are going to need it! Also, don’t give up your day job. It can take a long time for you to hit it big, if ever, no matter how talented you are.
Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
I have always wanted to travel to Alaska by ship. And I’d love to go back to Scotland and do the Highlands and Islands tour this time. My husband and I went to Scotland early on in our marriage before the kids were born and we’ve talked about going back and seeing what we missed, but there never seems to be time.
What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
I actually like the Richard Castle mystery books. They are quite good, and since I love the TV show, I can picture the characters behaving the way they do in the show. I’ve downloaded the latest but haven’t read it yet. I’m also anxious to get started on JK Rowling’s nom de plum book The Cuckoo’s Calling.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thanks for letting me visit! I hope your readers get a chance to read Dark Angel.

Jane Black has written the breakup album of the century, earning her a Grammy, a huge legion of new fans, and the pressure to repeat her success. Sure, the heartbreak from her husband’s unconventional abandonment might have been her inspiration, but it hasn’t done her any favors in the dating department. So when Matthew Harrigan, the toughest music journalist out there, asks for an interview, Jane agrees—as long as her personal life is completely off-limits.

British, gorgeous, and way too tempting, Matthew’s the first guy Jane’s been attracted to since her husband. As she spends more time with him and their relationship heats up, though, so does her writer’s block. How can the queen of the break up pen the perfect follow-up when she’s seriously in love?

Lauren HeadshotAuthor Bio:

Lauren Blakely is an unabashed fan of clever jokes, toast, and good guys in novels. Like the heroine in CAUGHT UP IN US, she thinks life should be filled with movie kisses and coffee drinks. Lauren lives in California with her husband and children, and spends her days writing both true stories and make-believe ones.

Spotlight Feature of Only Love Survives by Renee Charles

Amidst an epidemic ravaging the world, all Megan Fletcher’s hopes for the future lie in getting to Las Vegas where newscasts reported scientists were gathering to search for a cure for the modern plague. After rescuing her from a rooftop surrounded by Zombies, Sam Woods appoints himself her escort.  While he knows she is determined to get to Vegas no matter the cost, he doesn’t know her secret. And with his hatred of all things Zombie, she doesn’t dare tell him the truth. The more he kisses her, the harder it is for Megan to hide her growing feelings…and the bite-shaped scar.

But Vegas is not the haven it was promised to be, and when Megan’s immunity to the disease is discovered, she realizes her future and her heart belong to Sam, if he will trust her.  An idealistic school teacher and ex-corporate mogul manage to find love despite a looming worldwide catastrophe. Can their love survive while everything around them is dying? Will they learn that when facing the end of the world, Only Love Survives?

EXCERPT:
A storm that spelled danger flashed across Sam’s face. He advanced on Megan so fast, she backed up against the side of the Suburban. Planting a hand firmly on each side of her, he pinned her with his arms as well as his gaze.

“What I want? Are you so hard headed you can’t tell what I want?” He covered her mouth with his lips and crushed her clever comeback with an assault on her senses.

Megan pushed him, but he didn’t budge. Instead, he continued to kiss her until her heart raced and cheeks flushed with need. All resistance melted and she succumbed to the warmth of his embrace. Her arms wound around his neck of their own accord pulling him closer while her tongue sought his in a passionate dance, completely ignoring what her heart wanted.

When he finally broke away leaving Megan breathless and wanting so much more, Sam put his forehead to hers and watched her mouth like a drunk watches amber liquid poured into a glass. “You,” he rasped. “I’ve wanted you since I found you hanging from that damn roof, and all our little encounter in the river did was add fuel to the fire.”

RenneA little about Renee:

Renee Charles believes all love is legendary. Being the only female in a house full of giants (husband and two teenage boys) she tends to lean toward the strange and unusual, but inevitably the softer side shines through.

Whether life leads her to a snow covered mountain top, sun dappled forest, or the bottom of a ravine (yes, ditches happen) she always has a pen and note pad ready so wherever the next adventure takes her, she can take notes.

Her own romance began in an insane asylum. Luckily, both she and her husband only worked there. But it makes sense her romance novels have strange beginnings that lead to passionate endings. Romance with a dark twist.

In the face of zombies, werewolves, and big foot she always seems to find a happily ever after to leave you with a sigh at the end.

Interview & Tour Wide Giveaway with Angela Smith

Books-n-Kisses is happy to welcome first time guest Angela Smith to the blog today.

Angela(2)Angela, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I’m a writer, but my full time job is as a paralegal and office manager for a District Attorney’s Office, where I have been for over fifteen years.  I’ve been married going on twenty years to the love of my life and the inspiration for all my romance novels (even though I wanted to write romance even before I met him).  Most people who know me say I live a double life, because of my writing and my career and how different they both are (and how they perceive me when I’m at work.)

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I was about nine years old when I discovered I wanted to be a writer, although I’m pretty sure I knew at birth.  My mom read so much to me that I could recite books before I was able to read, and then she gave me romance novels with words I could barely pronounce, must less tell you the meaning.  And yet I didn’t end up damaged.  I always thought I’d like to write but didn’t give it a try until I spent a week with my aunt, who wrote poetry.  She helped my sister and me pass the time with writing and told us it was okay if we just wanted to rewrite a movie that we loved and write it how we would want it to go.   Right about that time, I was diagnosed with diabetes, and writing helped me get through those first few years.  Writing was just something I knew I had to.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I don’t really have a writing quirk.  I can write anywhere, anytime, with or without any habits I might have devised.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?BWS cover

I would love to!  Basically, a woman inherits a stash of stolen jewels, is accused of heisting those stolen jewels, and falls for the sexy FBI agent investigating her.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I can’t say I came up with the idea.  I think this story found me, and I had no choice but to write it.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

Yes, I’m working on the third and final story in this series where a recovering alcoholic-turned triathlete hires a former investigator-turned bartender to help track a missing child.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I’d say Sandra Brown, because I love how she structures her novels, how she releases one a year, and how she balances the elements of thrill, intrigue, romance, and mystery.  However, I’ve listened to her talk about her style and I’ve had the honor of meeting her a few years ago at a conference.  Though we didn’t talk for long, she still helped me to see she’s an everyday person who succeeds at making writing a part of her life.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Learn all you can but above all, sit down and start writing.  Go with what is in your heart and learn to stop listening to advice.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

My bucket list is pretty simple.  My craving for adventure is pretty simple, and I know I can find joy in everyday life and I’ve already accomplished a lot.  To be a bestselling author would make me pretty happy.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I just started a book (Sandra Brown’s latest) that I was waiting all year to read and I’m sure there’s a million more I will find between now and the next month to put on my to be read pile.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I want to thank you for hosting me, thank the readers for reading my interview and tell them I hope you’ll read Burn on the Western Slope, leave a review, and look for Chayton and Naomi’s story out soon!

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.  If you could please make sure to include links to your Website, Facebook page, Twitter account or Goodread’s page I will make sure to include them in the post.  If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me.

Reagan McKinney is on a mission to discover more about a deceased uncle who mysteriously left her a sizable inheritance, a condo in the mountains, and a stash of stolen jewels. With both her graphic design career and her love life in shambles, the opportunity to begin a new life couldn’t have come at a better time. He is assigned to investigate Reagan’s involvement with a large jewel fencing organization, but his investigation becomes compromised when his attraction to her heats up. Will his discovery destroy everything he has come to love, including Reagan?

Excerpt:

“I’m not sure I’m ready for that,” Reagan said, running her tongue over her lips as she rested her glass on the counter. “Skiing, that is,” she quickly added. He would never know she’d been thinking of kissing him, but she had to force herself to look away from his mouth. Nudging Naomi, she stood. “It’s time for me to go. I need to settle in. I haven’t even unpacked yet.” And she had no intention of doing so now, but it was a good excuse to leave. She wiped her hands on her jeans before extending her hand to his, praying hers weren’t clammy. “It was great to meet you.”

Garret grasped her proffered hand and nested his other on top, engulfing her hand. She burned. Everywhere. “Meet me on the slopes tomorrow?”

Reagan bit her lip and glanced at the floor. “Tomorrow? I don’t know. I might need a little more time to get used to this place.”

“We’ll start with sledding. You can’t not like sledding.”

She didn’t know, seeing as how she’d never done it, but cozying up to him at a hundred miles an hour would probably be amazing.

“I’m safe,” Garret said as he dropped his hand.

“You’re what?” she asked, meeting his eyes. Maybe he was a good guy in most people’s standards, but he made her heart beat too fast to be anything but dangerous.

“I’m harmless. Several people in town will vouch for me.”

“But I don’t know them either.”
