Kelly reviews Tamed by Stacey Kennedy

tamedTITLE: Tamed
SERIES #: Club Sin #5
CHARACTERS: Porter Marshall & Kenzie Hart
AUTHOR: Stacey Kennedy
PUBLICATION DATE: March 10, 2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
SA Today bestselling author Stacey Kennedy returns to the tantalizing world of Club Sin in an enticing novel of control and surrender.

Porter Marshall has nearly achieved his goal of becoming a Club Sin Master, but his new sub poses a much bigger challenge than he anticipated. Despite their mutual attraction and red-hot dungeon sessions, Kenzie Hart plays her own games. Her bratty, you-can’t-break-me attitude masks terrible personal hurt—pain that only the exquisite touch of a skilled Dom can release. But when Porter suggests taking their connection to the outside world, Kenzie denies him . . . which only makes him want her more.

Kenzie can’t ignore the raw, fierce bond she has with Porter. But she can’t give in to his dangerous demands, either. Is the passion they share real, or is he using her to solidify his status at Club Sin? And yet, who else can she trust with the shattering secrets she holds within? As Porter expertly brings her to the point of no return, Kenzie surrenders her body—and, piece by piece, her heart.

Tamed is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences.

REVIEW:
Another great story from Ms. Kennedy. Loved Porter when we first met him in Cora & Adian’s book. There was something about him that made you want to grab him and give him a big hug. Not that he would ever admit that he needs random hugs. Well except from Kenize. When it comes to Kenize, Porter will do just about anything.
Now that brings me to Kenize. Kenize is all tough and fierce when she is inside the walls of Club Sin, but outside she is anything but. So when she enters into this agreement with Porter, Kenize figures it will be like it always has been. She will mouth off and get what she wants. Only problem is that Porter Marshall doesn’t play by the rules.
I really enjoyed Porter and Kenzie’s story. Both have been looking for something for so long. Neither truly knowing what it was that they needed. But together they have found what completes them. Great story!!!!

Blog Tour & Review: Slow And Steady Rush by Laura Trentham

Slow and Steady Rush

She lives by the book—and is still searching for her happily ever after.

Darcy Wilde has tried hard not to live up to her last name. As a librarian in Atlanta she lives a fine life far away from the football-obsessed town of her childhood. But when her beloved Grandmother needs help, Darcy takes a leave of absence and heads back to the home and past she left behind.

He knows how to play the field—and is in no rush to settle down.

Robbie Dalton knows a thing or two about painful pasts. After bouncing around in foster care and the Army for years he is finally ready to move on and make a home for himself in Falcon, Alabama as the newest high school football coach. Sparks fly when the sexy new coach and the sharp-tongued librarian meet, but neither of them is looking to make ties.

But when it comes to love, sometimes you’ve gotta throw away the rule book to cross the finish line…

Everything changes when Darcy falls in love, not only with the gruff, protective, and smoking hot man who’s sharing her days and nights, but also with the complex tapestry of people who weave Falcon together. Could this be where she belongs – and who she belongs with?

*EXCERPT*

Giving her waist a slight squeeze, Robbie concluded Darcy Wilde was sexy as all get out and didn’t even know it. He hadn’t been the only man to watch her twitching, slightly tipsy walk across the bar. Her red heels emphasized toned calves, and her dress molded to her curves.

Rick the Dick had tried to strong-arm her onto the dance floor— unwillingly if the table she’d dragged along was any indication. After maneuvering her out of Rick’s grasp, he’d pulled her to the dance floor himself and tried not to compare his motivations to Rick’s. She’d followed him willingly enough.

He could accept the fact he wanted her in his bed. Every man with a pulse at the bar probably wanted the same. What he hadn’t expected was the paralyzing shock from the pseudo kiss she’d laid on his injured arm. The simple gesture shouldn’t have resonated so deeply. But it had.

He’d planned to give her a much-deserved apology and then enjoy a couple of beers alone but surrounded by people.  The three   subjects he was qualified to discuss— math, football, war— weren’t suited for flirtatious small talk. She hadn’t seemed to mind. Although the veering of their conversation had nearly given him whiplash, he’d enjoyed himself, laughed even.

Anticipation at getting laid steamrolled through his body even as his conscience corralled the spiraling lust. She was Logan’s cousin, and she was drunk. If anything happened, Logan would kick him into next week, but even worse, Robbie might lose his friend— one of the few. Not to mention, Miss Ada might come after him with the rifle she stored in the hall closet, broken hips or not. Anyway, she wasn’t one-night-stand material, which scared him worse than getting beat up by Logan or shot by Miss Ada.

He helped her onto the leather seat of his black truck, and she swung her feet in to nestle among a half-dozen footballs and orange cones. She lay her hands lightly on his shoulders, and the same burn that had coursed through him during their dance reignited.

“Avery’s very lucky.” She sounded close to tears, but he’d checked and she’d barely gotten a strawberry on each knee.

“I’m the lucky one. He saved my life.” He snapped her seatbelt home, not sure she would find it in the dark. His bicep brushed against the fullness of her breasts, and goose bumps broke over his forearm.

“ You served together?”

He propped his hands on either side of her thighs, leaving their faces inches apart in the dim interior. “Of course. I thought about another tour, but after he was injured I didn’t want to leave him in the States without me.”

“That’s so sweet. I wish …” This time the tears were unmistakable. Maybe the alcohol drove her over-the-top emotional   reaction.

“What?”

“For the impossible. Avery is waiting.” She pushed him back, but not after a telltale squeeze of his shoulders. His muscles twitched.

Did she want him to kiss her? Surely, he hadn’t lost all ability to read women. Although, this woman was written in a different language. One he wanted to study and learn— like Braille.

“How was he injured?” she asked after he’d cranked the engine.

The truck bucked backward. Usually reticent to reveal anything personal, the words flowed out roughly, but flowed nonetheless. “Bomb. Shrapnel ripped his leg to hell, and the doctors had to amputate. My shoulder … ”

His fingers traced the puckered scars crisscrossing his arm, the moment of detonation never buried deep enough in his memory. The knuckles of his other hand were white on the steering wheel. A deep, practiced breath unlocked his fingers.

He added, “Avery pushed me down and protected me from the worst of it. Doesn’t like me gone for too long, makes him nervous.”

“He sounds amazing,” she said, her voice thick.

“He is amazing.”

Wind buffeted the cabin from the half-opened windows. Chewing at his bottom lip, his gaze bounced from her to the road and back again.

Completely out of character, he broke the normally welcomed silence. “Is Darcy an author as well?”

Her head lolled toward him on the seatback. “I doubt my mother intended it as such, but I like to imagine I was named after Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice.”

“Never read it.”

“It’s one of my favorites. What do you read?”

“Popular Mechanics. Scientific American. Sports Illustrated.” He turned onto the washed-out lane and concentrated on smoothing the ride as much as possible in the dark. After parking in front of Miss Ada’s timeworn house, he came to her side and opened the door.  The truck’s interior light underscored her pasty face.

“Let me help you inside.” He took her forearm as she climbed out of the high cab. Her ankle rolled, but she righted herself immediately. He scooped her into a cradle hold, ignoring her yelp.

“Dang it, I can walk.”

“Not without doing some damage to yourself on all this gravel and in those heels.”

“I’m not a damsel in distress, Robbie Dalton,” she said, but one of her arms looped around his shoulders. No one called him Robbie anymore, and he liked the way it drawled off her tongue.

Shivers skittered down his spine and chased away the logical reasons he shouldn’t kiss her. Only the thought of Logan and Miss Ada dented the impulse. Under a weak finger of porch light, he maneuvered the front door open. “Might as well deposit you in your room. Is it upstairs?”

“Upstairs, end of the hall.” Her eyes closed, and her warm breath on his neck invaded his body.

Their combined weight creaked the wooden stairs. Squeaking shoes signaled company. Ms. Evelyn stood at the bottom, wearing rumpled scrubs and a dazed expression, her mouth forming a perfect circle.

He backed into Darcy’s room but left the door open for propriety’s sake. Slowly and with maximum body contact, he set her on her feet and gripped her hips.  The curves of her body pressed into him, her soft pliancy a perfect foil for his tensed   muscles.

He took a calming breath and looked around. Her room was a time capsule. A ten-year-old hard-rock band poster, the corners peeling, was taped beside an oval mirror. A yellow comforter and green body pillow covered a brass bed. The girlish furniture was painted white with pink flowers. A jammed bookcase ran along one corner. Overflow books were stacked in towers of various heights. Suitcases stood along the wall.

“Thanks for driving me home.”

He stared at her full bottom lip. Having her in the same room as a bed played havoc with his good intentions. He glanced toward the open door.

“Avery’s waiting, don’t forget.”  She pushed his arms away. He stepped back. His thighs bumped into her dresser and rattled the mirror against the wall.  His dog was so well trained, he would experience pain rather than have an accident indoors. “ Yep, he needs me.”

“You can see yourself out, I’m sure.” She flapped both hands, shooing him away.

Keeping her in his sights like an enemy combatant, he shuffled backward toward the door. Was he imagining the attraction, or was it all one-sided?

Usually, women were obvious and straightforward. For the most part, he brushed them off, but sometimes the nights got lonely, so he took them home. That hadn’t happened since he’d moved to Falcon.

Maybe it was the small-town atmosphere, maybe it was his deepening friendships with Logan and Miss Ada, maybe it was his players, but the constant aching hollowness in his chest hadn’t bothered him so much here.

As he pulled the door closed, she turned like a wobble toy, kicked off her heels, and collapsed on the bed. Her leg hiked up and exposed a pair of black lace panties.

A one-night stand with Darcy Wilde was out of the question. What were his options? He could ask her out on a date. And then what? The couple of times he’d tried a relationship, the women had ended up hating him. The safest, smartest option would be to keep the ill-advised attraction to himself and ignore her.

If he stared though the crack in the door longer than he should, he forgave his momentary weakness. The picture of Darcy Wilde he’d created from her letters had been shattered by the real thing. And the real thing put his imagination to shame.

Jennifer’s Review of Slow And Steady Rush

Review (4 Stars): I enjoyed Darcy and Robbie together and Slow and Steady Rush was a sweet small town romance that is sure to delight readers.  Darcy was such a firecracker and was all ready to head home once her grandmother recovered from her hip injury until she met Robbie.  He was the epitome of sexy and I could definitely see why all the ladies were vying for his attention.  Robbie reminded Darcy what it felt like to finally have a place to call home and that our past doesn’t define who you are or your future.  That was exactly what she needed in her life and the chemistry between these two characters was very hot.  This was a great romance and I’m looking forward to reading more from Ms. Trentham.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts I really enjoyed the Hush Hush series, so when I saw that Becca Fitzpatrick had a new YA book out I jumped on it. I have to say, I loved this book! There were a few times where the characters annoyed me and where I thought the book was moving along too slowly – but I was wrong. There was a purpose to it all and I found that all of the build up was necessary for the epic ending. This story is an emotional roller coaster that I couldn’t put down. The characters are intriguing and I was truly invested in Britt and Mason. I will say, I guessed at the big reveal pretty early on, but there were still twists I didn’t see coming – so I was still somewhat guessing up until the end. Britt was a strong lead character and I enjoyed seeing her come into her own. The epilogue seemed a little lengthy at a glance, but I loved it! Hands down, my favorite part of the book. I sobbed…a lot.

Ladle to the Grave

Guest Post by Connie Archer

When a local woman is poisoned at a pagan ritual in the woods, Lucky Jamieson’s grandfather, Jack, who provided the herbs for the gathering, is suspected of making a terrible mistake.  The following day, a dead man is found floating in a creek just outside of town, his face unrecognizable.  Is he a stranger or Lucky’s best friend’s estranged brother?  Lucky is certain both deaths are murder.  Can she find the connection and clear her grandfather’s name before more victims fall prey to a killer?

I hear voices . . . voices of my characters, that is.  They’re all clamoring in my head, telling me what they think, how they feel, what they want.  I have to shake my head to remind myself they are all figments of my imagination.  Or are they?  Do we create more than we know, more than we ever imagine, when we write stories and invent characters to people those stories?

I recently received an email from a fan of the Soup Lover’s Mystery series.  She had attended an author panel and wrote a very kind note.  She remarked how much she enjoyed listening to authors talk about future plans for their characters, characters, she said, “. . . that readers think of as friends.”

Her note struck a chord.  I know when I pick up the next long-awaited book in a series, I feel the exact same way – that I’m about to embark on an exciting adventure with an old friend — [fill in the blank here] – Caitlyn Tierney or V.I Warshawski or Kinsey Millhone.  I was suddenly humbled and wondered if perhaps readers also think of the denizens of the By the Spoonful Soup Shop and the residents of Snowflake, Vermont as friends with whom they can share an adventure.

Do we, as authors, lose sight of that?  Do we become too concerned with the next story line, the next plot point, the next sale, the next review, losing touch with the fact that we are entertainers who provide escape, adventure or comfort to our readers?  After all, we most likely remember more about our favorite characters’ lives and histories than we do some of our friends and acquaintances in the real world.

Each choice an author makes will outline that fictional life path, and we, as authors, must stay true to the characters we’ve created, no matter what flaws they may possess or what crimes they become involved with.  Will Jack Jamieson, Lucky’s grandfather, survive and thrive past the ripe old age of 86?  Will Sophie and Sage create a successful future together?  Could the village’s librarian have once dispatched her husband years before?  And does Hank Northcross harbor a deep dark secret that threatens his present life?

We must cherish our characters.  If we don’t, how can we expect our readers to connect with them and love them as well, even if some of them are the ones we love to hate?

So yes, I listen to those voices.  They’re important.  Our characters take on a life of their own and authors must listen.  Are they any less real as friends because they exist only between the covers of a book?  I don’t think so.

Wait . . . they’re speaking to me again.  I need to hear what they have to say . . .

Jennifer’s Review of Ladle to the Grave

Review (4.25 Stars): This is one of my favorite series at the moment and I love spending time with Lucky and her friends in Snowflake, Vermont.  Lucky finds herself deeply involved in the wedding plans for Sophie and Sage’s upcoming nuptials as well as having her hands full with the day to day operations of her restaurant.  While Sophie and Lucky are visiting Sophie’s property, they stumble on a dead body in the creek and now Lucky has another murder on her hands.  On top of that, Jack is being accused of providing herbs that may be involved in the death of a local woman and can’t prove that the herbs he gave her weren’t poisonous. Lucky must use her sleuthing abilities to clear both their names before all their plans become permanently postponed.

Ladle to the Grave is an enchanting mystery filled with clever plot-twists, delightful characters and yummy recipes that will have you coming back for seconds.   This is the fourth book in the Soup Lover’s mystery series and I always find myself craving a hot bowl of soup after I’ve finished reading one of Ms. Archer’s mysteries.  I liked that there were two murders to solve in this book which made it interesting for me as the reader.  I adore Lucky and the characters of Snowflake, Vermont and I know that readers will as well, once you start this charming series.

Kelly & Natasha review Rock Hard by Nalini Singh

rock hardTITLE: Rock Hard
SERIES #: Rock Kiss #2
CHARACTERS: Gabriel Bishop & Charlotte Baird
AUTHOR: Nalini Singh
PUBLICATION DATE: March 10, 2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In New York Times Bestselling author Nalini Singh’s newest contemporary romance, passion ignites between a gorgeous, sinfully sexy man who built himself up from nothing and a shy woman who has a terrible secret in her past…

Wealthy businessman Gabriel Bishop rules the boardroom with the same determination and ruthlessness that made him a rock star on the rugby field. He knows what he wants, and he’ll go after it no-holds-barred.

And what he wants is Charlotte Baird.

Charlotte knows she’s a mouse. Emotionally scarred and painfully shy, she just wants to do her job and remain as invisible as possible. But the new CEO—a brilliant, broad-shouldered T-Rex of a man who growls and storms through the office, leaving carnage in his wake—clearly has other plans. Plans that may be equal parts business and bedroom.

If Charlotte intends to survive this battle of wits and hearts, the mouse will have to learn to wrangle the T-Rex. Game on.

KELLY’S REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts T-Rex is on the hunt. But this time the mouse has come armed with weapons. Lots and lots of weapons to take down the big bad T-Rex.

I was so very excited to get my hands on Gabriel and Charlie’s story. I had falling in love with Charlie in book 1 Rock Addiction. I knew from the moment Charlie stepped on the since she was a lot tougher than even she thought she was. In Rock Hard she proves that over and over again. And of course we can forget listening to Charlie talk about her horrible new boss to her best friend Molly.
Gabriel is most definitely a T-Rex kind of guy. But even T-Rex’s need love right? Or they need to be knock up side the head a few times. But either way Gabriel is nice on the eyes, a whiz at his job, bossy and a super nice guy who will do anything for those he loves.

I could keep going but I really want you to find out for yourself why Rock Hard is so far (because I hope there are lots more books) my favorite book of the series. :). If you liked the first two stories in the Rock Kiss series you will love Rock Hard. If you are new to the series never fear. Rock Hard can be read out of order (but I would suggest starting with book one).
Can’t wait to see what Ms. Singh has in store for this series next.

NATASHA’S REVIEW:
4 Hearts This was another great installment in this series. I loved Charlotte and Gabriel together. He’s such an intimidating yet loving leading character. I have to say, Charlotte’s behavior was frustrating me for a good portion of the book – however she began to grown on me after more of her background emerged. The supporting characters in this series continue to be intriguing and the relationships genuine. I love this series and will continue to read.

CHAPTER ONE

“Baseball breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone.”—A. Bartlett Giamatti

A crack of the bat.

The sound punctuated Rowdy Blanton’s life. Permeated everything. Seeped into his dreams.

From sandlot ball in knee-high Johnson grass in his hometown of Stardust, Texas, to luxurious major league diamonds, a crack of the bat spelled freedom. Freedom from boring classrooms where he struggled to read, from the empty belly that kept him awake nights, from watching his father wither and die.

Freedom from pain.

The crack of a bat carried him from poverty to the pinnacle of success, and all the nice things that money could buy. He had arrived, believing his lofty perch would finally ease his suffering.

His head throbbed. Tequila hangover. He squeezed his eyelids shut.

His belly ached. Kobe beef hangover. He clenched his teeth.

His left shoulder burned…

Oh God, his pitching arm. He winced, groaned. For one sweet fuzzy moment, he had forgotten about his ruined pitching arm.

A wet tongue licked his cheek. He put his elbow over his face, blocking the amorous kiss.

Undaunted, the persistent tongue laved his chin.

Was it the blonde from last night’s Cinco de Mayo party? Or the redhead? Might even be the brunette. She’d pawed him like a kitty at catnip.

No. Couldn’t be. He sent them all home.

Ever since that devastating night he always sent them home. He should be alone. But obviously, someone had lingered, taking advantage of his tequila-soaked brain.

Ugh.

The hot wet tongue slurped across his mouth. Sloppy kisser. Which one shared his bed? Blonde? Redhead? Brunette? Someone else entirely?

Sun warmed his face. The smell of chlorine burned his nose. A plush cushion covered the thin metal frame beneath his body. No. Not his bed.

Patio lounger.

Poolside.

Who was he going to have to face, cook breakfast for, walk to her car, kiss goodbye, and never see again?

Terrific.

He might as well get it over with. As much as he hated pain, he wasn’t a coward. Dreading what he would find, Rowdy held his breath, opened one eye, and saw…

Nolan Ryan.

Thank God.

Jennifer’s Review of Back In The Game

Review (4.5 Stars): Breeanne and Rowdy were so cute together as a couple because even though they seemed like opposites, they fit so well together.  Breeanne spent most of her life sheltered due to a heart condition but the one thing that she loved was baseball.  Especially, following the career of Rowdy Blanton and watching his games brought her joy in life after her many surgical procedures.  Rowdy was considered a playboy until a horrific injury had him sidelined.  Writing his autobiography was part of the plan to get his life back and he needed a ghost writer, while Breeanne was looking for her writing career to finally take off.  Their chemistry was fun, sassy and sweet and I was so glad that Rowdy brought joy and hope back into Breeanne’s life.  Back In The Game is the first book in Ms. Wilde’s new Stardust series and she definitely has hit a home run with this light-hearted romance.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Borrowed Crime by Laurie Cass

A Cover By Any Other Season
By Laurie Cass

For an author, there are many high points on the road to a book’s publication. Getting the first solid idea for the book’s plot is a great moment. So is starting the first draft. And then there’s the giddiness of snapping out a paragraph that just sings, and there’s the satisfaction of finishing the first draft, the relief when you finalize the last round of edits, and the thrill of seeing a copy of the book in a bookstore … but before that happens, there’s an agonizing moment to endure, a moment that’s fraught with angst and tension.

Yep, I’m talking about the day you get the first glimpse of your book’s cover.

This process is different for different authors and publishers, but in my case, I don’t have much hand in the cover design. What happens for me is that my editor asks if I have any ideas for the cover and I almost always say no, because I’m busy writing the book and haven’t given Thought One to what the cover might look like. My editor says okey-dokey and a couple of months later she emails me an image and writes, “Hope you like it!”

I’ve had great good luck with all of my book covers, but the cover for BORROWED CRIME blew me away. It’s flat out gorgeous. The bookmobile is parked in a forest glade, birds are flittering about, books are displayed outside amidst wildflowers, and everything is green and growing and almost magical-looking with the way the sunlight is shimmering through all the green.

There’s only one problem; the book takes place in early winter. And while winter for some people means putting on a sweater and mowing every other week instead of every five days, it’s a little different in northern Michigan, where the bookmobile cat mystery series is set.

Up here, early winter means no green leaves, no grass, and the only flowers to be seen are in flower shops, not outside growing out of the ground. Instead, we have bare trees, cloudy skies, and snow. Wet, sloppy, drippy, snow that chills you to the bone.

As I looked at the beautiful but oh-so-very seasonally incorrect image, I suddenly understood my editor’s comment of, “Just so you know, the cover is a little warm.”

Ah. Now I get it.

My suggestion that the artist paint some snow over the top of everything wasn’t taken seriously. Neither was my other suggestion, which was to save this cover for the next book, which takes place in late spring.

So what’s an author to do?

Well, since there wasn’t much this particular author could do about the situation, I figured I might as well see the humor in the whole thing. After all, it makes for a good story, right?

And besides, it’s hard to be too upset because it really is a beautiful cover!

After a number of years in management, she felt the need to move on and took a job with fewer responsibilities. A month later, she was dead bored and began to consider writing as a way to wake up her brain. She started reading a lot of books on writing and happened across a particular sentence: “What’s it going to be, reasons or results?”

The phrase practically stuck her in the eye. She printed it out, framed it, and put it next to her computer. “Reasons or results?” At the end of her life, was she going to have a pile of reasons for not having done anything? Or was she going to sit down and write a book? Once she started looking at it that way, the decision was easy. A short 13 years later, her first book was published.

But she’s determined to keep her patrons—and Eddie’s fans—happy and well read. She just needs her boss, Stephen to see things her way, and make sure he doesn’t see Eddie. The library director doesn’t exactly know about the bookmobile’s furry co-pilot.

But when a volunteer dies on the bookmobile’s route, Minnie finds her traveling library in an even more precarious position. Although the death was originally ruled a hunting accident, a growing stack of clues is pointing towards murder. It’s up to Minnie and Eddie to find the killer, and fast—before the best chapter of her life comes to a messy close…

Jennifer’s Review of Borrowed Crime

Review (4 Stars): Borrowed Crime was a delightful mystery with engaging characters, clever plot twists and a purrfect sidekick.  Minnie Hamilton is having a hard time finding funds to keep her beloved bookmobile program running and she is at her wit’s end trying to find a solution. On top of that, she is desperately trying to find volunteers to assist her when the bookmobile makes their scheduled stops. When one of her new volunteers is found dead and all the evidence points to murder, Minnie must solve the clues fast before her beloved bookmobile is shut down for good.

This is a great series and I just love Minnie and her feline buddy, Eddie.  I felt bad for Minnie in the beginning of the book because she was completely stressed that she would lose her beloved bookmobile program and that her boss knew all about Eddie joining her for every trip.  The last thing she needed was for one of her volunteers to be murdered and she ends up discovering the body once again.  The mystery in Borrowed Crime was thought-provoking and had me trying to figure why the victim was killed, when the clues didn’t point to the killer right away.  I loved getting updates on my favorite supporting characters and I’m glad that Minnie’s love life was still heading in the right direction.  This is the third book in Bookmobile Cat Mystery series and I’m looking forward to reading book number four, Pouncing on Murder, when it comes out later this year.

Kelly reviews Brash by Laura Wright

brashTITLE: Brash
SERIES #: The Cavanaugh Brothers #3
CHARACTERS: Cole Cavanaugh & Grace Hunter
AUTHOR: Laura Wright
PUBLICATION DATE: March 3, 2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The New York Times bestselling author of the Cavanaugh Brothers novels returns to the Cavanaugh’s Texas Triple C ranch as the brothers confront the painful memories of their childhood and the truth about their sister’s murder…

No matter how many fights UFC champion Cole Cavanaugh wins, he can’t rid himself of the guilt of not having saved his twin sister’s life. Now, not only is he facing his arch enemy in the ring, he’s fighting to uncover the truth about Cass’s death. But will winning both fights truly give him the retribution and absolution he seeks? Or does he need the healing power of love to finally move on with his life?

The mystery surrounding Cass’s murder also haunts veterinarian Grace Hunter. Many believe that her father might hold the key to the truth. Unfortunately the ex-Sheriff’s deteriorating mental state makes it impossible to separate fact from fiction. As Cole persuades Grace to help him unlock the elusive clues, her defenses weaken. She finds the Stetson-wearing fighter irresistible. But while the truth could free Cole’s heart, it could very well end up shattering hers.

REVIEW:
Another good book in Ms. Wright’s Cavanaugh Brothers series. I have really liked Cole from the start and was so happy to read his book. He seems to be the one hurting and taking the blame the most in Cass’s murder. Cole puts on a front that he doesn’t care about anyone or anything (other than his sister and fightin. But in BRASH we get to see a new side to Cole. The side that shows he does care just a little bit. I have to say one of my favorite scenes is when Grace goes on a date with the Reverend and Cole’s reaction. Priceless 🙂 . In BRASH we learn more about what and who happened to Cass. I won’t give you more than that, because you know you need to read it and find out for yourself.
But this was a good story and I can’t wait to see what happens next with Blue’s story.

How to Dress a Ghost
Guest Blog by Fran Stewart

Did you ever notice that some writers go into great detail dressing their characters in Armani and Blahnik, Hermes and Chanel? Those meticulously turned-out characters would be quite in place on a Paris runway.

But what do you do when you’re writing a 14th-century Scottish ghost? He’s not even palrt of the nobility, so a floor-length ermine cloak is off limits. I wouldn’t write one on him anyway, since I have this thing against using dead animal skins for high fashion or any other kind of fashion.

Fortunately Macbeath Donlevy Freusach Finlay Macearachar Macpheidiran of Clan Farquharson—can you see why Peggy Winn calls him Dirk?—is something of a hunk. He doesn’t need any extras. Just ignore that picture of Jamie in the Outlander. Dirk’s belted plaid (pronounced played) is what most of us would call a kilt, a real kilt, made with nine yards of tartan fabric. What man with broad shoulders and good knees wouldn’t look good in a kilt?

Of course, Dirk’s shoulders are very broad. And his knees would be the envy of everyone in the town of Hamelin, Vermont—and in your hometown, too—if only “everyone” could see them.

You see, Dirk is invisible to everyone except Peggy Winn, but I must say she appreciates his … his kilt enough for everyone.

And his shoulders? Ahh. Don’t you love to see a man in one of those poet shirts (like this one from a website called the witches spindle)? They make even a fairly skinny fellow look pretty good, and someone like Dirk look absolutely magnificent. He doesn’t get any ruffles on his shirt, but then again, he doesn’t need them. Did I mention that he’s dead, though? He’s been that way for a little under 700 years. Poor Peggy.

Add to that the fact that he’s still in love with Peigi (it means Pearl), the woman who knitted the shawl that allows Peggy Winn to see Dirk when she puts it on. I know, I know, the shawl must be 700 years old, but believe me, it makes sense in the book.

So, I’ve dressed Peggy in a Scottish arisaidh that she wears while she’s working at her store, the ScotShop, and the ancient shawl that lets Dirk “be” – somehow. Meanwhile Dirk wears his poet shirt, his kilt, a knife in his sock, a dagger, and a kilt pin made of antler and wood. With him dressed like that, you can see his … uh … attributes without any high fashion anywhere.

Happy drooling … I mean reading!

With so many enchanting items on sale, Peggy can’t resist buying a beautiful old tartan shawl. But once she wraps it around her shoulders, she discovers that her purchase comes with a hidden fee: the specter of a fourteenth-century Scotsman.

Unsure if her Highland fling was real or a product of an overactive imagination, Peggy returns home to Vermont—only to find the dead body of her ex-boyfriend on the floor of her shop. When the police chief arrests Peggy’s cousin based on some incriminating evidence, Peggy decides to ask her haunting Scottish companion to help figure out who really committed the crime—before anyone else gets kilt…

Jennifer’s Review of A Wee Murder in My Shop

Review (4.0 Stars): Peggy Winn has taken a trip to Scotland to search for treasures that she can sell at her Scottish shop back home in Vermont and forget about her lying, cheating ex-boyfriend.  On this lovely trip to the Scottish Highlands, Peggy acquires a beautiful shawl in a store that she has never seen before on her many trips to the area.  What she soon discovers, is that her lovely shawl comes with the ghost of handsome Scot.  When Peggy returns home with her new companion, she finds the body of her ex-boyfriend lying of the floor of her beloved shop and Peggy’s cousin is blamed for the crime.  Peggy must find the real killer soon before she ends up joining her new friend on the other side.

A Wee Murder in My Shop is a fun, delicious mystery that will keep you entertained for hours.  I liked Peggy from the very beginning and envied her trips to Scotland to visit the Highlands and spend time in this beautiful country.  I loved Dirk as he struggled to accept the fact that he was dead and now in the 21st century, which had some very funny moments in the book.  Ms. Stewart is a new mystery writer to me but that won’t be for long because I thoroughly enjoyed A Wee Murder in My Shop and am now a big fan of this new series.

my sisters graveTITLE: My Sister’s Grave
SERIES #: The Tracy Crosswhite Series
CHARACTERS: Tracy Crosswhite & Dan O’Leary
AUTHOR: Robert Dugoni
PUBLICATION DATE: November 1, 2014
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Tracy Crosswhite has spent twenty years questioning the facts surrounding her sister Sarah’s disappearance and the murder trial that followed. She doesn’t believe that Edmund House — a convicted rapist and the man condemned for Sarah’s murder — is the guilty party. Motivated by the opportunity to obtain real justice, Tracy became a homicide detective with the Seattle PD and dedicated her life to tracking down killers.

When Sarah’s remains are finally discovered near their hometown in the northern Cascade mountains of Washington State, Tracy is determined to get the answers she’s been seeking. As she searches for the real killer, she unearths dark, long-kept secrets that will forever change her relationship to her past — and open the door to deadly danger.

REVIEW: This was a new author to me and I found I enjoyed the book a lot. The storyline takes place twenty years after the incident and the mystery unfolds in real time along with tidbits of information from twenty years ago. I was intrigued and found I couldn’t wait to get more pieces of the puzzle. The whodunit was completely speculative on my part, and I was definitely surprised by the ending – which doesn’t happen often! The characters were all real and genuine in their own ways – love them or hate them. And there were plenty that I hated. For the most part though I enjoyed them all and was very pleased with the story.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Start Me Up by Nicole Michaels

Start Me Up Nicole Michaels copy

Single mom Anne Edmond can handle and hand-make just about anything. From table settings to party favors, floral arrangements to nursery décor, there is no project her creativity and a glue gun can’t tackle. But dating? That’s a whole another story. Case in point: Mike Everett. He’s a gorgeous mechanic and known car-whisperer, a man who can work with auto parts like nobody’s business. And he has thrown a monkey wrench into Anne’s carefully-crafted life.

One look at Anne is enough for Mike to know that she’s no fixer-upper. She’s perfect just the way she is and the chemistry between them works like a charm. Mike’s always been a no-strings kind of guy, but Anne’s impressive self-reliance and gorgeous exterior gives him pause. This time, a fast joyride just doesn’t seem like enough. But first he has to convince Anne that he means to take her all the way…

*EXCERPT*

As the party wrapped up, Mike excused himself from the table, on a mission to grab Bailey and leave, when all the little girls ran inside. He followed, just in time to catch sight of them running up the stairs. Well, he certainly wasn’t going to follow her up into the personal living space. He walked back toward the kitchen and straight into Anne. They stopped in the narrow hallway between the living room and the kitchen, their bodies close. A light sheen of perspiration had built up on her cleavage and on her temples. He realized the floral smell wasn’t only the home, it was also her.

“Hey, this was a really nice party, Anne. Bailey seemed to have a great time,” he said.

“Thank you for bringing her. Bailey and Claire have become best friends this year at school. I think the party turned out well, too.” She looked genuinely happy about his comment, which made him think of a few inappropriate things he’d like to thank her for. He took a deep breath and tried to resist his baser urges, the ones telling him to get closer… ask her out, say something to let her know he was into her.

No, he’d already decided that was not going to happen. Never mind the fact that his sister would kill him if while doing her a favor he ended up trying to hook up with one of the school moms. As if Anne was even the hookup type. No, she was definitely the making-love kind of woman. He expected her to rotate any second, put some space between them, but she shocked him by stepping slightly closer as she spoke.

“So, I . . . um, put some stuff in a box.” He glanced down, and she was holding a pink pastry box with the Callie’s Confection’s logo on it. He raised an eyebrow, and she instantly looked embarrassed. “I mean, there were just so many cupcakes left . . . and Lord knows the last thing I need is more sweets in the house.”

She bit her bottom lip and scrunched up her nose in the most adorable nervous tic he’d ever seen. He was pretty sure she was trying to flirt with him by giving him take-home treats. She wasn’t offering any of the moms boxes to take home. At least he didn’t think she was. In that moment he wanted to take the awkwardness away, assure her that flirting with him was not only welcome, but a complete turn-on.

“You’re perfect. I think you should eat all the sweets you want.” He edged closer, placing his fingers over hers on the box. The sharp hitch of her breath made him feel a little bolder and a lot like ignoring the part of his brain telling him this was not a good idea. She chewed again lightly at her lower lip, the sight of it sending inappropriate signals throughout his body. Well, fuck it. “And thank you, I’m sure what you’re offering is . . . delicious,” he murmured.

Her lips parted on a tiny gasp and he worried he had gone too far, misunderstood the gesture. Some women liked to feed the dude in the room. But then her expression softened. Her mouth slid into a little smile, relaxing his nerves along with it. She was so out of his league, and he didn’t exactly fit the mold of ready-made stepdad. At least he hoped he didn’t. So what really was her motivation? Maybe she was interested in a little fun.

“You know.” Her head tipped to the side and her voice had gotten soft. “Claire and I were going to head to Settlers Park in about an hour… you are more than welcome to bring Bailey and meet us there. I mean since they’re best friends . . .”

“Oh, Anne, I’d love to, but—” Shit, there was nothing more he would like to do than go to the park with Anne, which surprised him almost as much as her asking him to do it. But he had a date with Katie. He couldn’t even bring himself to say it out loud. “I can’t.”

“Oh my gosh, I mean, of course. God, I’m so sorry, I don’t even know why I asked . . .” She made the cute little scrunched face again, and it was killing him to see her uncomfortable. He didn’t want Anne to regret being forward with him, hell it was amazing, but why did she have to suggest today of all days? “It’s Saturday, you probably have . . . oh gosh, you would never want to go to the park. Never mind, the girls will see each other at school, and gymnastics class or . . . something.”

“Uncle Mike has a hot date tonight. He told me.” Bailey was jumping down the stairs above them, and each thud of her feet hitting the squeaky old wood matched the pounding of his heart as he watched the expression of understanding and then embarrassment on Anne’s face.

“Well . . . good for you. How fun, it’s such a beautiful day. It should be, umm, perfect for a date.” Anne’s words were excited and over-the-top happy, making this even harder and more uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry—” he started.

“Oh goodness, stop.” She held a hand up to shush him and smiled. “No need for all that, let me just, um. Let me get Bailey’s goodie bag and you guys can get outta here.”

She walked away, her pink dress swishing around her legs. He caught her rubbing her temple, a gesture that implied she was upset or embarrassed, and it pissed him off that the situation had gone from flirty to awkward in a matter of seconds. It was only a hunch, but he would bet that Anne Edmond didn’t make the first move often. She likely wouldn’t be repeating it anytime soon after this.

Then again, maybe it didn’t really bother her. Hell, it wasn’t like she could possibly be looking for something serious, not with some random blue-collar guy that showed up at her daughter’s birthday party. She probably felt safe flirting with him, testing the waters before she worked up to someone who was her equal, some- one she would want to build a family with in this cute little house. It was really for the best. He had no business considering spending any more time with Anne

because they were complete opposites and she needed the sushi-loving man who wore a tie. Mike was not that guy. No, he was the man that would get grease stains on her matching pillows. It wasn’t a natural fit, not by a long shot, and he’d known it from the moment he laid eyes on her.

He had done his job, covered for Erin, played the parent for the day, and now it was time to go back to his very unpink, uncluttered, and unhomemade life. He had a date with Katie and he was pretty damn sure her hobbies were more of the carnal variety. Which was exactly what he needed in order to forget Anne Edmond.

Jennifer’s Review of Start Me Up

Review (4.5 Stars): Start Me Up was a sweet and charming romance that had me laughing at the humor that was laced throughout most of this  book.  I liked Anne and Mike together even though he was used to playing the field and Anne had a hard time believing that she was as wonderful as everyone told her that she was.  There were times in this book that I wanted to smack Mike for the way that he treated Anne because she deserved happiness in her life and Mike needed to step up to the plate to be that guy for her.  He redeemed himself in the end and I hope he spends the rest of their lives making up for it.  Start Me Up was a delightful story and I can’t wait to read more from this talented author.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Assault and Pepper by Leslie Budewitz

Assault and Pepper (Final)

Judging a book by its cover
By Leslie Budewitz

“Don’t judge a book by its cover.” As a metaphor, it’s spot-on: Don’t judge the interior by the exterior; don’t assume you know a person’s nature—their heart, mind, and values—by their appearance.

When it comes to actual books, though, we do it all the time. And it’s not a bad way to make that first decision—“Is this a book I’m likely to enjoy?” Occasionally, there’s a miss—a cat prances across the cover of a book with no felines, or the cover shows a bridge that appeared in a previous draft only to be demolished by the wrecking ball of later edits.

But in the world of the light-hearted mystery, the cover works hard. It cues us in to the protagonist’s occupation and where she spends most of her time, conveys the mood of the story, and may offer clues to the central conflict. Food, pets, and even the murder weapon are common elements.

I love hearing reader compliments about my covers. While I adore them all, ASSAULT AND PEPPER may be my favorite cover yet. My publisher, Berkley Prime Crime, part of Penguin Random House, contracts with artists who have a magical ability to convey our story worlds in pictures. (Both my series are illustrated by the same artist.) Authors provide images and a description of key locations— the cover of the first book in a series usually showcases the protagonist’s shop, library, or bakery, while later covers illustrate a location that features in the story. The artist may also read a draft, or at the least, a synopsis.

The cover of ASSAULT AND PEPPER takes us inside Pepper Reece’s Seattle Spice Shop, with the Pike Place Market visible through the open door and window. Shelves brim with spice jars. Pepper’s collection of antique grinders and spice boxes can be seen on the shelves beneath the front counter, and the pseudo-samovar the staff uses to serve sample cups of tea sits on a vintage tea cart Pepper snatched up on a junking trip with her BFF, Kristen. Both the samovar and the sample cups—a few are littered on the floor—are critical to the story.

And so, of course, is Arf the dog, who comes alive on the cover. It’s been great fun to see how my artist works Mr. Sandburg, Erin Murphy’s Burmese cat, into the covers of the Food Lovers’ Village Mysteries. He lives at home with her, not in the shop, but there he is on the cover of DEATH AL DENTE, demonstrating both his cuteness and his influence over Erin. On the cover of CRIME RIB, he and Pepé, his dog-in-law, join Duke the Retriever, who belongs to one of the chefs competing in the steak grill-off, for a romp on the stone patio of Caldwell’s Eagle Lake Lodge. The lodge is the scene of both festivities and crime. In BUTTER OFF DEAD (coming July 2015), Mr. Sandburg takes in a movie, presiding over a concession stand brimming with the over-the-top treats typical of the Food Lovers’ books. The artist even worked in the movie posters that play a role in the story. And if you look closely, you’ll see another cat ….

Butter_Off_Dead

My artist, Ben Perini, illustrates covers in other styles as well—he’s done covers for J.A. Jance, literary novelists, and even nonfiction. He’s also a fine artist who calls himself “a professional dreamer.” His covers are your invitation to enter the world of my dreams and play for a while.

So, welcome—come on in.

Assault and Pepper (Final)

From the cover of ASSAULT AND PEPPER:

Tory seems to know why she’s a suspect, but she refuses to do anything to curry favor with the cops. Convinced her reticent employee is innocent, Pepper takes it on herself to sniff out some clues. Only, if she’s not careful, Pepper’s nosy ways might make her next on the killer’s list…

Jennifer’s Review of Assault and Pepper

Review (4.5 Stars): Pepper Reece is the owner of the Seattle Spice Shop in the lovely Pike Place Market and life is slowly coming together for her when she discovers a body of a homeless man on the shop’s front doorstep.  Pepper recognizes the panhandler from her interaction with him the day before and believes that the man simply died from natural causes. Soon, she discovers that the police believe that the man was murdered and one of her employees has been arrested for the crime.  Pepper knows that she is innocent and decides that she needs to find some clues before an innocent woman is put away for a crime she didn’t commit.

I loved Pepper and the gang at Seattle Spice Shop.  Pike Place Market has always been one of my favorite places to visit when I’m in Seattle and Ms. Budewitz has done a wonderful job of putting you right there with Pepper and savoring the ambiance that is the Market.  I enjoyed learning about Pepper’s shop and the different spices that she had available for her customers.  These characters are an absolute delight to spend time with and Assault and Pepper has the perfect aroma of mystery that is sure to be a delicious treat to cozy readers.  Can’t wait to see what Pepper and the gang are up to in the next installment of this series.
