REVIEW:
I had the honor of listening to this book on audio. I love audiobooks. But the narrator can make or break a good book. If you don’t have a great narrator it really doesn’t matter how good the book is. I do have my favorite narrators. So let me say that I really enjoyed the story of Bad Nights Rebecca York is an amazing story teller. And this was my first Rebecca York books. But I was not in love with the narrator for this book Tara Sands does a fine job in the dialog part, although some of the guys sounds very similar. But the storytelling part felt like she was just reading the book not telling the story. I prefer to have my narrators tell me the story. But overall I really did like this story. But I think the next book in this series I will be reading. I am not sure. I might give Tara another shot.
I loved Jack & Morgan. Oh and Shane & Max!! I can’t wait for these two’s story. But back to Jack & Morgan. Jack is a man on the run and Morgan is the unfortunate person who finds him naked, hurt and out cool. This chance meeting puts them both in grave danger. The only trusting each other and a little lucky will keep them safe.
This was a really good story. It keep my attention the whole time. I wanted Jack & Morgan to get out safe. I wanted them to realize what they could have together. I wanted to slap Jack for telling Morgan he was not the man for her. But in the end…..
Well you need to read the book to find out.

Winter Romance Wednesday! Kimberly reviews The Keepers: Christmas In Salem by Graham, Leblanc, Pickering and Ciotta

the keepersTITLE: The Keepers: Christmas In Salem
CHARACTERS: Various
AUTHOR: Graham, Leblanc, Pickering, Ciotta
PUBLICATION DATE: 11/05/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
This holiday season, armed with love and passion, can the Keepers stop the reign of Darkness?

Christmas is coming to Salem, but so is an evil force that threatens all mankind. In this memorable collection led by New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham, four powerful Keepers must save their community as a strange, eternal night creeps over the town. Forced to choose between their time-honored responsibilities or the lovers their hearts desire, these four extraordinary women must risk their own happiness to save the holiday. But Christmas is a time for miracles, and as each Keeper’s greatest longing is met, the Season of Light returns. Don’t miss this magical holiday collection from Heather Graham, Deborah LeBlanc, Kathleen Pickering and Beth Ciotta.

REVIEW:
2.5 Hearts This just didn’t do much for me. I enjoyed the story by Graham and was looking forward to the others but they just got repetitive. They were just too much alike so by the third story I was bored.

Not a great book to put you in the holiday spirit. Think I will stick with Graham’s Krewe Of Hunters series and leave the Keepers to others.

Book Spotlight & Review: Hell Bent by Devon Monk

hellbent2

Instead of the deadly force it once was, magic is now a useless novelty. But not for Shame Flynn and Terric Conley, “breakers” who have the gift for reverting magic back to its full-throttle power. In the magic-dense city of Portland, Oregon, keeping a low profile means keeping their gifts quiet. After three years of dealing with disgruntled magic users, Shame and Terric have had enough of politics, petty magic, and, frankly, each other. It’s time to call it quits.

When the government discovers the breakers’ secret—and its potential as a weapon—Shame and Terric suddenly become wanted men, the only ones who can stop the deadly gift from landing in the wrong hands. If only a pair of those wrong hands didn’t belong to a drop-dead-gorgeous assassin Shame is falling for as if it were the end of the world. And if he gets too close to her, it very well could be….

Jennifer’s Review of Hell Bent

4.5 Stars: I have been a fan of the Allie Beckstrom series and I was excited to see that one of my favorite characters, Shame, was getting his own book.  I loved Shame because he was such a mysterious guy and I just wanted to learn more about him.  He has always been such a bad boy and it was a treat to see how his world has changed since magic isn’t so readily available as it was before the apocalypse three years ago.

In Hell Bent, Shame is struggling with his death magic and worrying that someday his need to kill will consume him and there will be nothing left of his humanity afterwards.  He is partners with Terric Conley, who is his Soul Complement, the one person that can join forces with Shame to harness magic and use it at its full power. While dealing with his own personal demons, Shame discovers that they have a new threat.  Someone is out there killing people from their past with magic and the government is looking to use their magic as a weapon.  And a beautiful redheaded assassin named Dessa needs Shame’s help to find her brother’s killer and becomes more than Shame bargained for.

Terric and Shame have a very difficult relationship together.  They are stuck together as partners and have a brotherly love/hate relationship and both are bordering on losing control of the magic that almost consumes them.  I could see how hard it is for Shame and Terric to have this relationship with one another knowing that you will always be connected to this one person who is the exact opposite of you which causes quite a bit of conflict between Shame and Terric.  Shame wants to push everyone away in his life and just let go but finds that the people that care about him pull him back from the brink and convince him to keep going.

Hell Bent is a great start to a new series and I’m still a big Shame fan after all this.  The book was a little slow in the beginning but picked up the pace nicely and was a thrill-ride of emotions for me, both good and heart-breaking.  It was nice to get updates on Allie and Zay as well as other characters from previous books to see how they were doing three years later. I loved the addition of Dessa because she was just a kick-ass character that just seemed to be perfect for Shame and wasn’t afraid of anything that he could dish out.  Kept him on his toes which was fun to watch.  Devon Monk has created a well-written paranormal adventure in a world that I love and can’t wait to visit again.  Looking forward to the second book, Stone Cold, which is expected to be released sometime next year.

Interview with TJ Bennett

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome TJ Bennett to the blog today .
TJTJ, can you please share with us a little about yourself
My father was career military, so I traveled quite a bit in my youth. I’ve been all over Europe, visited Morocco, and even managed to hit Australia in my older years. I think that is where my love of historicals comes from. Seeing all that history up close. I’ve also been a contract negotiator, an educator, a ghostwriter, a cake decorator, an editor, a dissertation reviewer, and currently I coordinate professional development programs for the staff of a state university in East Texas. I know, it sounds like I can’t hold down a job, right?  Learn more about TJ here: Website  Blog  Twitter  Goodreads  Newsletter
Have you always wanted to be an author?
Pretty much since I was eight years old. I stopped to do other things for a while (see my response to your first question), but the desire has always been in there somewhere.
What is your most interesting writing quirk?
I always have to go edit the last few pages I wrote before I can move on to the next part. It is my way of getting back into the mood and character of the story. That, and the munchies. Must have munchies when I write. That might be why I suffer from what is affectionately (or lamentably) known as “writer’s bottom (insert your own euphemism here).”
Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)? Dark Angel
When young widow Catherine Briton is washed ashore, the sole survivor of a violent shipwreck, all she wants is to go home to London. But injured as she is, she can’t escape when a shadowy stranger rescues her and takes her to his castle—where she’s healed with suspicious, almost magical speed.

The more time Catherine spends in the castle, the more her curiosity rises where her fiercely handsome new “master,” Gerard, is concerned. As she begins to investigate, though, her discoveries only bring more questions. It seems Gerard isn’t the only one on the island keeping secrets…The small town is full of strange mysteries and townspeople who know more than they should about her. And when a hulking beast that stalks the nearby hills and valleys catches up to her, Catherine must figure out what’s going on before it’s too late.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

The first line of the book came to me, and it just spun out from there. I felt much of the time I was working on it that the book was writing itself. It really isn’t like anything I’ve ever done before.
Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
I’m working on a late-Victorian set piece that has a lot of drawing room wit in it. At least I hope it does. I’m enjoying the characters and their banter and repartee.  The characters are showing up fully realized, another thing that is unusual for me, and it looks like there might be more than one story to tell there—several intriguing characters in star-crossed lover sort of tales. We’ll have to wait and see.
Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
Laura Kinsale. She is just brilliant. Her characters are multi-layered, complex, her research is extensive and yet seamlessly woven into the story and she always does something unexpected and smart. I’d love to just talk to her and find out how her brain works.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Make sure you do your homework, pay your dues, have very thick skin, and a whole lotta patience, because you are going to need it! Also, don’t give up your day job. It can take a long time for you to hit it big, if ever, no matter how talented you are.
Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
I have always wanted to travel to Alaska by ship. And I’d love to go back to Scotland and do the Highlands and Islands tour this time. My husband and I went to Scotland early on in our marriage before the kids were born and we’ve talked about going back and seeing what we missed, but there never seems to be time.
What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
I actually like the Richard Castle mystery books. They are quite good, and since I love the TV show, I can picture the characters behaving the way they do in the show. I’ve downloaded the latest but haven’t read it yet. I’m also anxious to get started on JK Rowling’s nom de plum book The Cuckoo’s Calling.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thanks for letting me visit! I hope your readers get a chance to read Dark Angel.

Guest blog & giveaway with Cynthia D’Alba

May I Have This Dance?

Hi All! Cynthia D’Alba here. Thanks to Books-N-Kisses to having me here today to celebrate the release of my newest book, TEXAS TANGO. It’s the second book in the Texas Montgomery Mavericks Series. (It follows Texas Two Step released last year.)

I wrote a scene that takes place at a country club dance. Growing up, a “country club dance” was the height of social activities. It meant a fancy dress (preferably new!) and a date wearing a suit (instead of jeans (of questionable cleanliness) and a polo (instead of a T-shirt if you were a special date!) Writing the scene stirred up quite a few nice memories, like the time mom made me a full hoop skirt dress and if I didn’t sit down just right, the front of my dress would flip over my head! I think I might have been channeling Scarlet O’Hara at the time.

In TEXAS TANGO, the dance is being held at Whispering Springs Country Club as a fundraiser for the local high school football team. In the south (since I’m Southern, born and raised, I have no idea what it’s like in the rest of the country!), the combination of a country club dance with high school football is much like peanut butter and chocolate. They go together so well. Let me give you a taste of the scene…

Travis took Caroline’s hand, interrupting her conversation with KC’s brothers. “If you’ll excuse me, I have to get my date on the dance floor before she finds someone else to dance with.”

“Nice to meet all of you,” Caroline said with a wave. “Get me on the dance floor?” she whispered.

“If we don’t move on, we’ll be there talking to them for hours. I know my uncle. He’ll talk ranching until my ears fall off my head.”

“Got it. So are we really headed to dance?”

“Sure.” He swung her around and caught her with a hand at her waist.

She put both hands on his strong shoulders. No padding needed in his jacket. All man and all muscle. And for tonight—and the next four months—he was all hers. A dangerous trill raced through her. She slipped her hands up and around his neck. As though of a mind of their own, her fingers stroked the back of his neck. Up and down and then around in a circle.

He hissed out a long breath. He tightened his hands at her waist. Jerking her snug against him, he whispered, “You are the sexiest woman in this entire room. And if you don’t stay close, everybody else will know exactly the effect you are having on me.”

The hard evidence of his arousal pressed firmly into her stomach. His chest vibrated against hers as he hummed along with the song. She found herself perversely pleased by how comfortable she felt in his arms.

But on the other hand, maybe she needed to get a hold on her feelings. They had no future beyond this fall. She had to keep telling herself that.

As the song came to its closing note, Travis hugged her before ending the dance with a deep dip. She laughed with delight. Travis grinned and then brushed her mouth with a quick kiss.

Curious about TEXAS TANGO? Here’s a little more:

Dr. Caroline Graham is happy with her nomadic lifestyle fulfilling short-term medical contracts. No emotional commitments, no disappointments. She’s always the one to walk away, never the one left behind. But now her great-uncle is gone and her grandmother is on her deathbed, more concerned about Caroline’s lack of a husband than her own demise. What’s the harm in a little white lie? If a wedding will give her grandmother peace, then a wedding she shall have.

Travis Montgomery has one dream left—to build the ranch he and his wife planned before he lost her to cancer. There’s just one thing standing between him and the last bit of acreage he needs—a last living heir who has one traveling foot out the door…and an unusual request that challenges his determination to never again place his heart at risk. The land he wants in exchange for a faux marriage. Everyone wins. Until things start to snowball…and the hearts they stand to lose are their own.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
He’ll help unleash the new woman in her…

Special Ops soldier Griffin Reid doesn’t exactly have happy memories of growing up in Sunshine, Idaho. He’s only come back to recover from a war injury, and while he refuses to admit he’s in a weakened state, he finds comfort in the last person he’d expect.

Kate Evans teaches second grade in Sunshine, the place she’s always called home. Dreaming of graduate school and a happily-ever-after, she’s desperate to break out of the monotony of Sunshine. Luckily, a certain sexy man has just come back into her life.

To Griffin, Kate has always been his little sister’s friend, but now he’s finding her to be so much more. As both attempt to forge their paths, they must decide if their passionate connection can turn into something lasting…

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts Boy did I love this book. Griffin is just adorable. I just wanted to package him up, take him home and make his boo-boo all better. Kate is something else as well. She is Superwoman. And yet everything she does is authentic and well meaning. She just is who she is and I loved that about her.

The characters connected immediately. The reader can just tell they are meant to be together. There is a calmness that they give each other. I also enjoyed revisiting Holly and Adam from Rescue My Heart.

I am not sure the next in the series for Jill Shalvis but I am throwing out my request for Ryan’s story. Now there is a man I could fall in love with.

Cover Reveal of Christmas in July by Debbie Mason

Thanks for taking part in our cover reveal! I’m so excited to share the cover for CHRISTMAS IN JULY with you.  I love Grace and Jack’s second-chance story and art director Diane Luger and her talented team have created the perfect cover.  I’m not sure they even realize just how perfect it is.

Every detail, big and small, reveals something about the story. The house is similar to the old Victorian on Sugar Plum Lane that Grace has dreamed of buying since she moved to town. Although Grace’s dream home is pink, yellow was the perfect choice. The bright, cheerful color makes me think of sunshine and light; our wounded hero and heroine’s journey to joy and happiness. The old Victorian plays an integral role in Jack and Grace’s story as it’s part of their conflict and their happy ending.

A blue door symbolizes refuge, calm, and loyalty. And a white picket fence represents home sweet home. Red roses in full bloom mean “I still love you.”  Something Grace struggles with. While she’s in love with her husband, she has legitimate reasons for doubting his love for her. The yellow ribbons show support for the military. Jack is a Black Hawk pilot who has been MIA for seventeen months. They’re a symbol of hope, of waiting for a loved one to come home, and forgiveness.  Jack returns to a town he never thought of as home, a wife and son he doesn’t remember. By the end of the book, with the help of his family and the citizens of Christmas, Jack realizes that home is where the heart is.

I hope Jack, Grace, and little Jack will capture your heart as they have captured mine. You can meet Grace in the first book in the series, THE TROUBLE WITH CHRISTMAS, as she struggles to raise her son, keep her bakery afloat, and hold on to the hope her husband will come home. The first chapter of CHRISTMAS IN JULY is also included in the book.

Grace Flaherty had given up hope of ever seeing her husband again. After all, it’s been over a year since he went missing in combat. So when he strides through the door of her bakery in downtown Christmas one sunny afternoon, she can hardly believe her eyes. But her happily-ever-after is going to take some effort – because Jack has no memory of his family.

All Jack Flaherty remembers about Christmas is that he couldn’t wait to leave town. Now he’s a local hero with a wife and son he doesn’t know. Even as he struggles to rekindle the romance with his wife, he knows in his heart what he wants: a second chance at love.

Jane Black has written the breakup album of the century, earning her a Grammy, a huge legion of new fans, and the pressure to repeat her success. Sure, the heartbreak from her husband’s unconventional abandonment might have been her inspiration, but it hasn’t done her any favors in the dating department. So when Matthew Harrigan, the toughest music journalist out there, asks for an interview, Jane agrees—as long as her personal life is completely off-limits.

British, gorgeous, and way too tempting, Matthew’s the first guy Jane’s been attracted to since her husband. As she spends more time with him and their relationship heats up, though, so does her writer’s block. How can the queen of the break up pen the perfect follow-up when she’s seriously in love?

SERIES #: A Werewolf BBW Romance #2
CHARACTERS: Julia & Damien
AUTHOR: Aubrey Rose
PUBLICATION DATE: 09/25/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The standalone romance novella which follows the #1 Bestselling Shifter Romance Blind Wolf!

Julia always thought that she was human. When the blind leader of a pack of straggling misfits claims her as his one true mate, she accepts that she is in love with Damien despite their radical differences.

But after another shifter wolf attacks them, he points to her as he dies and utters words that will change Julia’s life forever:

“…she’s not what you think she is…”

REVIEW:
2.5 Hearts This is the second in the novella series and I have to say it was just ok for me. The writing of the character was a bit immature. The story is sort of interesting but not much different than many others except Damien in blind. It is a short story so I won’t make this long but I do think you need to read the first novella before reading this one if you do chose to read it. There is not much to the BBW part and not much to the erotica part but if you like shifters you could possibly enjoy it.

Born WildTITLE: Born Wild
SERIES #: Black Knights #5
CHARACTERS: Eve & William
AUTHOR: Julie Ann Walker
PUBLICATION DATE: 11/5/13
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
She’s got three rules:

1. Trust no one… Eve Edens has been abandoned, used, or manipulated by almost everyone she’s ever met. Born into ridiculous wealth, she’s dealt with the petty jealousies and sordid little resentments for nearly thirty years. But after three botched attempts on her life, she can no longer ignore the truth. Someone wants her dead.

2. Avoid the bad boys at all costs… William “Wild Bill” Reichert, the wonderfully sexy boy who abandoned her years ago, is back in town. Only he’s no boy. Now he’s a covert operative – and he’s all man. When Eve hires Bill to help her discover who is behind the attacks, Bill soon comes to suspect it’s someone much closer to Eve than she dares to believe.

3. And never fall for the same ruse twice… The search for the killer takes Bill and Eve deep into the dark secrets and strange world of the rich and famous, and into the heart of red-hot passion re-ignited by the peril that threatens to consume them both. But does Eve dare risk her heart on Bill a second time?

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts William “Will Bill” Reichert is as hard as nails. He worked as a bomb specialist in the Navy. But there has been one thing, one person, that has always been able to bring him to his knees. Eve Edens. The one one and only woman who he has ever love and broke his heart. When Eve comes to him asking for help he is powerless to say no, but he is determined to keep his distance no matter what.

Poor Bill doesn’t know what he is in for when he agrees to help Eve. Not that he would ever turn his back on her. But if he only knew. This was another great story from Julie Ann. I just love the Black Knight Inc series. I love all the alpha males in these books and I really love that while the women might seem mousey they are tough as nails too. I mean they hang out with these bad-ass boys they kind of have to be. I really like Bill & Eve’s story. I love that both have been so tormented about the past for so long. Bill is so sweet with Eve!!! I can’t wait to see them more in future books. And speaking of future books. Bring on Mac & Delilah!! These two are going to be awesome.
