Love and Vengeance…

The violent attack left Synjon destroyed and his lover dead—at the will of the evil vampire Cruen. Syn’s passionate savior was Petra. When she became pregnant with his child, it should have been a blessing—until Syn vanished after discovering the truth: Petra was the daughter of the man he despised above all others. The daughter of Cruen.

When Petra’s health begins to decline, she contacts Syn to help save their baby. Though reluctant to see Petra, he cannot turn his back on his own innocent child. But night after night, as his feelings for Petra are rekindled, Syn becomes increasingly torn.

Although everyone assumes that Cruen is dead, Syn is not convinced—and is still hell-bent on finding and destroying him once and for all. But will his thirst for vengeance keep him from seeing what is really worth living for before it is too late?

ETERNAL SIN Snippet #6

“You drank from him, didn’t you?” Dani called over her thickly feathered shoulder to Petra as they flew past a stand of teak that housed three of the Avian’s twenty-two nesting grounds.

Avoiding her best friend’s massive wings, Petra leaned forward and wrapped her arms around the hawk’s neck. “Of course I did.”

“Well, I hope you drained him dry. I hope he could barely breathe. I hope he was coughing and sputtering and losing consciousness—”

“I get it, Dani,” she shouted over the wind. “You want him to suffer.”

Dani glanced back, her hawk eyes flashing with ire. “Did he tell you how close he came to having sex with me?”

“No, you told me, remember?” Petra returned.

“Of course, for me,” Dani went on, “it was all part of the act. We needed to get him alone, get him as vulnerable as possible. He’s a total manwhore, and last night I made sure he chose me.”

This wasn’t a subject Petra felt all that comfortable with. Especially a second time. And yet she couldn’t seem to stop herself from asking, “So, if Sasha and Val were late or hadn’t shown up, were you actually going to—”

“Fuck him?” Dani called back, sounding appalled before she actually snorted. “Hell to the no.”

“You make it sound like a fate worse than death, Dani. The guy’s incredibly hot. And the things he can do . . .” What the hell am I doing? She shook her head. It felt like someone else was running her mouth.

“I don’t want to hear about his magic tongue,” Dani shouted.

Heat flared in Petra’s cheeks. “You can stop now.”

Dani laughed. “Fine, then. His magic penis.”

“Okay,” Petra said, completely mortified now. “I think we should play the quiet game, don’t you?”

“No. I don’t.” And just to send that message home, Dani dive-bombed into the forest, pulled up right before they would have hit the ground, and then started serpentining through the trees.

Petra gripped the hawk’s feathers, her mouth dry as she panted with fear. “That was unnecessary,” she called through gritted teeth.

“I don’t think so,” Dani called back. “You need your brain shaken up, reworked. You’re talking about this guy being all hot and everything, and all I can think is he screwed my best friend, got her preggers, and couldn’t care less.”

Petra winced. Her best friend’s words cut deep. As they were meant to. “You know my father took away his emotions. He couldn’t feel a thing now even if he wanted to.”

The hawk made an irritated sound. “Are you seriously defending him?”

“No.” And she wasn’t. That would be insane. That would make her foolish and optimistic, and worse yet, a glutton for punishment.

“You totally are,” Dani returned. “Please tell me that blood you took from him didn’t shatter the reality of the here and now, and his major dickhood.”

TRUST IS A RISK

Dr. Sarah Donohue is dedicated to removing the traumatic memories of her patients – like those of the stranger at her front door. But what he tells her of his past is too astonishing to be anything more than the delusion of a madman. Yet she has seen his flesh scarred by the sun and witnessed his inhuman strength. And never more has she felt so conneted to a man, by both fear and seductive excitement.

LOVE IS ETERNAL …

Interview & Tour Wide Giveaway with Jessica Lee

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to have Jessica Lee on the blog again today.

Jessica, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Let’s see… I’m a wife, mother, former science geek with a passion for writing romance novels filled with alpha male characters who bite.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Believe it or not, if someone had told me 20 years ago that I’d end up becoming a published author, I would have sworn they were crazy. Back in college, I would drop a course if I had to write a paper. lol I just don’t think I’d found the right inspiration until later in life when I picked up my first paranormal romance.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

Possibly that I’m neither a plotter or a pantzer. lol  I’m a little of both worlds. I always know the beginning of a new story and how it may end, and then I plot a little bit at a time as I go along.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

My latest release is Undying Embrace, A Novel of the Enclave, book two.

In Undying Embrace we learn more about Enclave warrior Arran MacLain and the female member of the team, Gabrielle Stevens who’s claimed his heart. Both carry a ton of baggage from their past, and because of those issues, they continue to fight their attraction.

Arran is vampire on a mission to find his partner, Markus, the male who betrayed not only him but the Enclave. During his search, he runs into Gabrielle who is on a mission herself to locate her missing sister. Together, they have to put aside their personal pain and join forces to fight the evil that’s invaded both their worlds.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

As with most of my stories, I usually have no idea how they pop into my head. lol This is book two, so Arran and Gabrielle’s story had already sparked in Undying Destiny. Somehow my characters invent themselves inside my head and come to life as I pen their story.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

Currently I’m working on book three in the Ariel Estate series, Breaking the Ice. This series features my lion shifters! Next, I return to finishing book four in the Enclave series. Book three, Undying Desire, I expect Entangled Publishing to release the novel sometime in early 2014.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I’ve met Karen Marie Moning briefly once before at a luncheon and book signing, but it would be such an honor and amazing to spend a work day with her and pick her brain. lol  For me, she is a master story teller!

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Never give up, and never stop honing your craft. In my opinion, no matter how long you’ve been writing, there is always something more to learn.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

My bucket list…hmm…I’ve always wanted to travel through Ireland and Scotland on an extended vacation and tour all the beautiful castles.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Oh, that would be Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It’s next on my list followed by KMM’s upcoming release Burned!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you so much Books ‘n Kisses for the opportunity to stop by on my tour! Great questions!

Arran MacLain is a vampire on a suicide mission, driven to kill his former partner who betrayed him and the Enclave they served. But two things stand in his way: Gabrielle, the human female who holds his heart, and the past that won’t let him go. If only death was enough to cleanse his soul.

Gabrielle Steven’s sister is missing. Her hunt for clues brings her face to face with the one vampire she can’t forget. Their missions combine and thrust them into the heart of evil. Will their passion be enough to overcome the pain from their past, or will their dark desires destroy them both?

AuthorphotoJessicaLeeAuthor bio:

Almost every author’s bio states they’ve been writing since they learned how to read. It’s what they’ve always wanted to do. Well, my journey wasn’t so straight and narrow. I was a nurse for over twenty years and hold a bachelor’s degree in science with a major in biology. So as you can see, my career path had originally gone in the opposite direction. I didn’t discover my passion for the craft until after I’d had my son and decided to work part-time.

I’ve always loved to read but had never read a paranormal romance. Then one night at work on break, I began reading Karen Marie Moning’s Spell of the Highlander. I couldn’t believe what I’d been missing, and I immediately fell in love with the genre.

I wanted to write like that. I wanted to create worlds where others could find the same escape and fascination I did when I read my first sensual paranormal romance.

And I hope that’s what I’ve accomplished in my work. Please dive in, hold on tight, and enjoy the adventure. Just be careful in the dark—you might find more than you expected waiting for you there.

Jessica Lee lives in the southeastern United States with her husband and son. She loves writing and can’t wait for that quiet time each day when her son is in school, and she can get lost in another place and world with the fantastical, sexy creatures in her head.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts I have to admit I have loved Synjon since he first walked on the scene. I would have to say that Syn is my second favorite character only to Nicky in the Mark of the Vampire world. But at the end of Eternal Demon I was very worried that my fun loving, teasing, sweet talking, dreamy Brit was lost forever. As I began Eternal Sin I had to remember that someway and somehow Ms. Wright would make everything right. She would wouldn’t she????? But oh Synjon is a total unfeeling a$$nut at the beginning of the book. I had to remember that it was not really his fault. But let me tell you Ms. Wright put me through the ringer waiting and waiting and waiting for Syn to stop being will an a$$.
This was a great story in the Mark of the Vampire series. We are introduced a few new characters. We get a bit of a look at love triangle, which I am a little worried about. We learn that the threat to the Order is not gone, but out for vengeance yet again.
If you are a fan of the Mark of the Vampire series you will really enjoy Eternal Sin.

Book Spotlight and Interview: Say Yes to the Duke by Kieran Kramer

sayyestotheduke

1. Tell me about your new release Say Yes to the Duke.

It’s a fun, romantic story about the middle sister – the one who’s not noticed as much as her “It Girl” older sister and her adorable younger sister.  Her mother told her, ” If you’re going to fall in love, it might as well be with a duke.” How many of us have been told, ” If you’re going to fall in love, it might as well be with a rich man?” Anyway, poor Janice is under so much pressure!  This is the story of her and her duke…but you might be surprised by what happens.

As usual, I put a lot of thought into my secondary characters, too.  I like the story to be populated with memorable people, so look out for Isobel, the maid, and the dowager duchess.  And then there’s Luke, the hunk in the stables!!!

2. Where did you come up with the idea for the series?

I dreamt about it one night. I woke up at 1 a.m. and ran to my computer and emailed my editor and agent.

3. The cover for Say Yes to the Duke is gorgeous.  How much input do you have on your covers?

I get to help choose the cover models, which is absolutely a blast! This cover was actually chosen by readers.  Heroes and Heartbreakers featured three covers created by the St. Martin’s Press art department, and this one won by a landslide!  I LOVE this cover.  Thank you.  I’ll be sure to tell the art department you like it, too!

4. What are you working on now?

I just finished my first contemporary romance called Sweet Talk Me.  It takes place in a fictitious South Carolina town and is about a starchy Southern belle and her troublemakin’ country singer ex.  They fall in love while he’s helping her get ready to marry another man.

5. Which authors/books do you feel have been a big influence on you becoming a writer?

Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Harper Lee, Victoria Holt, LaVyrle Spencer, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Sophie Kinsella, Beverly Cleary.

6. What was the first book that you ever wrote?  Was it published?

The first one I wrote as an adult was called Madeira, My Dear.  It was a 60,000-word Regency I wrote years ago when my children were babies.  It had a talking dog and all sorts of craziness.  I’d love to find it and read it again.  I did write a little book called The Adventures of Tom Nooley when I was eleven years old.  I was very proud of that.

Thank you so much for answering my questions.  I have loved all the books in the House of Brady series and I’m excited to read Say Yes to the Duke.

Thank you very much for these wonderful questions.  I wish you and all your readers a lovely autumn filled with many cozy moments reading fabulous books!

Jennifer’s Review of Say Yes to the Duke

sayyestothedukeTitle: Say Yes to the Duke

Series #: House of Brady #3

Characters: Janice Sherwood and Luke Callahan

Author: Kieran Kramer

Order Links: Amazon/ B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Janice Sherwood wants to marry for love, but she’s failed to make a match after two Seasons.  Her parents, the Marguess and Marchioness of Brady, arrange to send her to the Duke of Halsey’s country estate as a short-term guest of his grandmother, the dowager, in hopes that she might win the duke’s affections.  What they never could have imagined is that Janice would fall for the ruggedly handsome servant Luke, who lives in the stables and carries an air of mystery and temptation.

When Luke Callahan learns that he is the legitimate heir to a dukedom, he will stop at nothing to claim what is his.  But first, he must begin a game of disguise to secure his rightful inheritance.  Janice isn’t part of his plan.  But by engaging her in this dance of deception, might he lose her forever?

Review (4.5):
I am always impressed with Kieran Kramer’s talent in writing such wonderful romances that will have you rooting for the heroine to finally get her happy ending after facing obstacles that almost prevents her from finding true love.  I have loved this series from the beginning with Loving Lady Marcia and enjoyed her creative take on the classic television series, The Brady Bunch.

I’ve always liked Janice and I was happy to see her finally get her story.  Just like the television show, Janice was the middle daughter and always felt that she was outshined by her sisters.  Her older sister, Marcia, was the “pretty one” and Cynthia was the “cute one” while Janice was left in the shadows of their spotlight.  One thing I loved was how her personality changed over the course of this book and she became a strong woman who wouldn’t back down from anyone instead of just going along with everything like other women at the time.  There are a couple of scenes where Janice took advantage of her newfound situation and made the Duke’s lackeys help the community when they never had any intention of helping anyone but themselves.

The Duke of Halsey was an absolute jerk who took advantage of his social standing and used it as a platform to engage in unsavory activities.  He believed that women were just there to be used for his entertainment.  He never planned on getting married because that would spoil his never-ending party.  He was only interested in Janice because she did the exact opposite of what everyone expected and he wanted to see if the rumor about her sexual history was true or not. I wanted Luke to hit him over the head for some of the things that Halsey had done, he was that much of a jerk.

Luke Callahan was a great guy for Janice.  He was on a mission to find the truth about his heritage and didn’t plan on meeting or falling for Janice.  He never planned on deceiving her about his true intentions but I’m glad that everything worked out in the end.

I loved Say Yes to the Duke and can’t say enough good things about Ms. Kramer’s charming House of Brady series.  I’m looking forward to reading her next book in the series because I am sure to fall in love with her fun witty characters.

Guest Blogger: Jeannie Moon is talking about Book Boyfriends

Book Boyfriends—What’s not to love?

He’s perfect.  Tall and broad.  Handsome and wealthy.  Or maybe he’s tough and tatted up.  Biker, rock star, athlete? You know him…he’s your book boyfriend.

Romance lovers embrace the book boyfriend like no other reader, and do you know why?  Romance authors are just as bad.  But we’re shameless hussies, throwing over one boyfriend for another every time we open a new manuscript.

When I wrote my first Forever Love Story, The Temporary Wife, Jason Campbell was my guy.  He was dark and brooding.  A brilliant, wealthy computer nerd who looked like a sexy boy-next-door. But that relationship was over before the book came out.  By then, I was devoted to Josh.

Oh, Josh Campbell the hero of my newest release, Unexpectedly Yours (Intermix 11/19), was everything I wanted in my latest love.  Tall, blonde and blue-eyed, he was quietly kind, smart and patient.  And did he need patience! Caroline tested and teased him at every turn.  She was the woman he never thought he wanted, but discovered he couldn’t live without.  His heart, his soul, became hers.  When he fell for Caroline, I loved Josh even more.

Josh was my one and only (okay, he was my fictional one and only) for eight months.  Eight glorious months.  He didn’t let me down once.

And such is the way of the book boyfriend.  Romance readers are misunderstood by many with regards to their image of men.  It’s thought we have unrealistic expectations, but I think the book boyfriend, while he may set the bar high, he also lets us see what we really deserve in a relationship.  We deserve to be loved unconditionally. To have a man who cares about our needs, or wants.  Handsome is nice, but if that’s all you think about, you’ve missed the point of the book boyfriend or any boyfriend, for that matter.  Looks will fade. But a sensitive heart, a kind nature, a sharp mind and a good sense of humor will outlast a pretty face. Those are the things we want.

Those are the things that matter.

In real life, our significant other is there with us through life’s ups and downs.  Our book boyfriends take it one step further, allowing us to escape from the stresses of everyday life. No job is too outrageous, no setting is too far away, and money is not an object.  It the perfect storm of happiness and we can go there whenever we want.

The romance novel is perfection and the book boyfriend is perfect for us.  He lives in a safe world that provides a haven, and a new guy, whenever we need one.

Tell me about your favorite book boyfriend in the comments. Who is your guy? For a long time it was Jamie from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series who stole my heart.  However, he’s getting a run for his money from Ian Browning whom we meet, Roxanne St. Claire’s in Barefoot by the Sea. Decisions, decisions.  It’s never easy.

My Best Writing Advice

by J.R. Rain

First, my best advice is to keep practicing being a better writer. Practice makes perfect, right? It took me 14 years of feverish writing before an agent signed me on. (I have now officially been writing books for 29 years.) I truly learned how to truly write when I copied about 30 pages by hand of a favorite book of mine. Sitting down with a notebook and copying word for word a book that you love helps you get into the rhythm and flow of published writing, helps you to truly understand what’s expected of you as a writer, and helps you clearly see how your favorite writer goes about doing things. Oh, and study books on writing. Learn some great techniques from the pros. I would strongly recommend that you buy The Elements of Style by Strunk & White, a great (and small) book on the rules of editing for writers. Another great reference book is Orson Scott Card’s Characters & Viewpoint (the best book on writing that I’ve ever read), and Ray Bradbury’sZen and the Art of Writing. But there are many more out there. Head out to your local bookstore and peruse the writing how-to section and pick out books that call to you. Your job here is to give yourself a writing education. Think of it as taking a few college writing courses. And, while you’re at it, take a few of those, too. One of my favorite experiences as a young writer was taking a writing course taught by the great Gordon McAlpine at UCI. Once you have a few books under your belt, you will approach writing with a lot more confidence, and, quite frankly, be a better writer.

Second, write about things that are familiar to you. Use your hometown as a setting. Use your ex-jobs as well (all my characters are either ex insurance investigators or private investigators, both of which I worked).

Third, the best way to have writing success is to write in genres people are currently reading. Following current publishing trends will help you write books that stand the most chance for success. Romance books are the #1 bestselling books in all of fiction. Writing romantic thrillers or erotica or romantic supernatural mysteries are great choices. Mystery novels and thrillers do wonderfully, too, as do supernatural young adult stories (think Twilight, Harry Potter and Percy Jackson). Vampires and witches are currently the hot trend right now, so jump on that, too!

Fourth, publish a variety of books on Kindle. Novels are great to publish, and they certainly sell the best on Kindle (if you ask me), but you can also sell just about anything else you want on Kindle. I sell short stories in groups of 4 or 6. I sell these collections of short stories for $2.99, so basically readers are paying .50 cents a story. I sell all my novels for $3.99. Both of these price points have worked for me. (Additionally, I sell novellas and screenplays for $2.99.) I also package together my novels into omnibuses; meaning, I sell three novels together for a bigger price (usually $6.99 or higher). Remember, you are the publisher on Kindle. You can create any book you want. Give the a great cover; create a professional interior, and make sure the content has been professionally edited. Don’t have money for a professional cover or editing service? Ask around. I’m willing to bet a few of your friends will help you out, or know someone who can help you for cheap. Early on, all my covers and edits were done by friends and family. I’ve since branched out and use professional services, although family and friends do continue to help out.

Five, create an online presence. Website, Facebook and Twitter are the big three. Consider starting a blog and researching all the other news ways of getting your books out there. Yes, don’t neglect marketing! Read books on marketing. Stay on top of trends and your business. Don’t let your books stall. Keep them moving with ads and marketing and contests, and anything else you can think of. Do yourself a favor and buy a book right now on ebook marketing.

Happy trails!

Seven years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.

Now in MOON RIVER, private investigator, Samantha Moon, is asked to look into a string of bizarre murders, murders that are looking more and more like the handiwork of a bloodthirsty vampire. But when her sister, Mary Lou, goes missing, Samantha, Allison and Kingsley take the fight underground…into the dark heart of a vampire’s lair.

First Chapter:

I would miss Judge Judy today, which was always a damn shame. Judge Judy should be required viewing for anyone without a backbone. Tough woman. Fair woman. Scary woman.

My kind of woman.

Instead, I found myself being escorted by a young cop with perhaps the third- or fourth-cutest buns I’d ever seen. I ranked his buns right behind Rand’s, the UPS driver who’d turned out to be a vampire hunter. Officer Cute Buns led me down a hall that ended up being far too short. I had just barely started ogling him when he turned to me, smiled and motioned for me to enter.

I did so, smiling in return, and I think I might have—just might have—had me some smiling sex.

Whatever that was.

Waiting inside was, of course, Detective Sherbet. I knew he would be waiting for me because he’d called and asked me to come down and meet with him. I also knew he was inside because I could smell the bag of donuts from the hallway.

Who I wasn’t expecting was the tall guy sitting opposite the detective. He was tall and dark-haired and sporting shoulders nearly as wide as Kingsley’s. Nearly.

“Detective,” I said to Sherbet, who made no attempt to stand. Rude. Then again, the old detective had been gaining a little bit of weight these days, and he was veritably poured into that chair.

I heard that, he thought, telepathically catching my thoughts. The detective, among a small handful of others in my life, could read my thoughts…and I, theirs. I might have put on a little holiday weight.

It’s the summer, Detective. And there’s no ‘might have’ about it. I’m a trained observer.

Well, the Fourth of July is a big deal in the Sherbet household.

I grinned. He didn’t, although he did look down at his growing belly.

“I didn’t bring you in here to judge me,” said the detective.

“Excuse me?” said the other gentleman, who had been looking at me, but now snapped his head around to glance over at Sherbet.

Sherbet, unfortunately, still hadn’t quite gotten the hang of telepathic communication with someone like me. The old guy would occasionally blurt his thoughts, rather than think them. Rookie.

“Nothing,” said Sherbet. He motioned to the partially masticated pink donut with rainbow sprinkles. “Samantha Moon likes to give me a hard time about my donuts.”

“I didn’t say anything, Detective,” I said, shrugging innocently.

“You didn’t have to…now, let’s cut the crap. Samantha, this is Detective Sanchez from the Los Angeles Police Department.”

He stood like a true gentleman, reached over and shook my hand with a firm but soft grip. His grip told me a lot: confident, warm, comfortable with himself. Most important: human.

I’d had my hand in my jeans pocket where I had been holding a hand warmer. Yes, a hand warmer. They sold them at the local market…and they did wonders for creatures like me. If I knew a handshake was imminent, I could pop one of these open, grip it in my pocket…and shake hands with confidence.

Sherbet asked me to have a seat, and I did, next to Sanchez.

“Boy,” I said. “Two big, bad homicide detectives and just little ol’ me. I feel honored.”

“Cut the crap, Sam,” said Sherbet. “We’re going to need you on this one.”

Sanchez listened to this exchange and smiled. An easy smile. Friendly. But there was a strength to his jaw, and the way his forearms rippled as he moved slightly. He sported a thick, gold wedding ring. He said, “You were a federal agent, Ms. Moon?”

“Call me Samantha. And yes. For a few years.”

“You’re too young to retire. Sorry if I’m prying. Call it occupational spillover. Sometimes, I can’t stop asking questions.”

I nodded. I understood completely. I said, “I developed a…condition.”

“A condition that kept you from working as a federal agent?”

“No. A condition that kept me out of the sun. It’s called xeroderma pigmentosum and it’s a bitch.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. And here we dragged you out into the sun. My apologies.” Sanchez’s concern was real as he leaned forward and looked from me to Sherbet. “I hadn’t known. I would have met you at your home, or anywhere that you were more comfortable.”

I smiled at his sweetness. “It’s okay, Detective. I’ve learned to adapt.”

Truth was, six months ago, I’d adapted quite nicely, as I had then sported a medallion that enabled me to step out into the light of day. That the medallion had been buried under my skin was another story—or that a body-hopping demon had torn it from me…was, in the least, a horror story for another day, too.

Lots of stories, I thought.

Focus, Sam, came the detective’s thoughts.

I nodded to him as Sanchez said, “As long as you’re okay.”

“Oh, I’m fine, thank you,” I said. “So, how can I help you, gentlemen?”

Detective Sherbet looked at me for a long moment. Then he looked at Sanchez, who was looking down at his hands.

“Either someone starts talking about the case, or I’m going to start knocking heads,” I said.

That seemed to break the ice. Sanchez chuckled. Sherbet might have grinned. Finally, the handsome LAPD homicide detective said, “We think we have a serial killer on our hands.”

There was, of course, no reason why two experienced homicide detectives would be talking to me, a lowly private eye, about a serial killer. Homicide detectives, in general, didn’t look favorably upon us. We were seen as a nuisance, amateurish. There was, of course, only one reason why I had been called in. Something wicked this way comes.

I had been called in on such a case last year. Sherbet and I eventually caught the bastards behind what had turned out to be a blood ring. Right, a blood ring. For vampires. Sherbet, of course, no longer had any memory of my involvement in the case, thanks to Detective Hanner, a fellow creature of the night who had been overseeing—and concealing—the bloody enterprise for many years. Thanks to her otherworldly ability to remove and replace memories, most of the department—and anyone involved in the case, for that matter—believed that only one man had been behind the killings. The fact that the bodies had been drained of all blood had never made it into police reports or autopsy reports. Any connections to vampires had been removed from documentation. Sherbet himself was remembering more and more of the case, thanks to my help. But much was forgotten and would, undoubtedly, remain forgotten.

Now, I looked at Sherbet and thought: How much did you tell him about me?

Sherbet held my gaze then finally looked away. Everything, Sam. Everything.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Eamon Evernight has always lived in his older brother’s shadow. While his brother is fair of hair and lithe in body, Eamon sparks fear with his fiery locks and massive frame-and rumors of a mysterious power. But when his brother has the good fortune to be betrothed to a beautiful stranger, it’s Eamon’s help-and quick wit and romantic heart–that he needs. Eamon agrees to write the noble lady…a generous offer that will forever leave him a changed man.

Lady Luella Jane Moran has no interest in an arranged marriage and tries valiantly to dissuade her betrothed from afar. Though her own letters plainly state her case, the words her husband-to-be writes her leave her aching for his touch. Will Lu give in to the desire the missives have kindled within her? Or will desire turn cold when she discovers their true author?

REVIEW:
This was a quick novella about 40 pages long. But it was packed full of twists and turn with every page. I won’t give away too much as it was a novella. But let’s say that not everyone is as the seem.
I love how Kristen put this novella together. From beginning to end we cover a four year period and I loved reading the letters between Eamon & Lu. But really I am not going to say much more. But if you are a fan of Kristen’s and a fan of the Darkest London series you will enjoy this novella.

Disclaimer:
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

Pastels and Jingle Bells Banner 2-2-2

I love it when romance pops up in the most unexpected places.  In my last book, it was between a socially awkward tomboy and a reformed ladies’ man, which was a lot of fun to watch unfold, even though—as the writer—I already knew how the story was going to end.  In my newest story, Pastels and Jingle Bells, it’s between an artistically-gifted bakery owner and the guy who used to pick on her when they were kids.

Not exactly the most traditional set-up for romance, is it?  On the other hand, it does seem to set the stage for a little “just desserts” comeuppance, which is what the heroine of the story, Trish, originally plans.  And what’s more, former bully Ian doesn’t recognize Trish, so she thinks she’s in the perfect position to teach him a lesson that’s very much deserved—after all, he made life very difficult for her when she was a kid.  However, sometimes it’s true that people do change, and in this case, it’s for the better.

Because before Trish can enact her plans for revenge, she gets inadvertently drawn into Ian’s life and discovers he’s turned out to be a pretty decent guy.  Okay, maybe more than decent…and maybe she’s even starting to like him.  A lot.  Trouble is, she may have been a teensy bit misleading about her true identity before, and it’s going to be a little difficult to come clean now…

Trish Ackerly never expected to cross paths with Ian Rafferty again, but when she spots the former bully of her childhood years through her bakery window, she thinks she may just have been given the best Christmas gift ever: the opportunity to finally give Ian the comeuppance he deserves.
But clearly she does not have a knack for this whole revenge thing, because before she can make good on her plans, Trish gets inadvertently drawn into Ian’s life in an unexpected way that lets her see just how different the man is from the boy he used to be. In fact, much to her astonishment, she actually starts to like the guy.A lot.Trouble is, Ian doesn’t know who she really is, and explaining it to him is going to be a little difficult now—which is bad news, because Trish is starting to realize that all she really wants for Christmas this year…is Ian.
ebook, 40 pages

Here’s an excerpt from the first novella in my Heavenly Bites series, Pastels and Jingle Bells, when Trish first spots Ian through her bakery window and recognizes him:

Her eyes narrowed.  Ian Rafferty.  That miserable, mean-spirited little—

Then he turned his face back to the window, and Trish gasped and dropped to the floor before he could spot her staring at him.

“What on earth are you doing?” came Nadia’s voice from behind the counter.

Trish huddled behind a tall metal trash can and glanced up through her dark bangs at her startled friend and business partner only to remember belatedly that they had company in the shop, namely wizened little Mrs. Beasley, whose startled eyes blinked at her from behind enormous tortoise-shell spectacles.

Well, there was little help for it now.  “That guy,” Trish hissed, jerking one thumb in the direction of the window.  “I know him!”

Both Nadia and Mrs. Beasley peered intently through the glass.  “Mmm,” said Nadia appreciatively a moment later.  “Lucky you, girlfriend.”

“No, not lucky me!  That guy made my life a living hell in junior high.  He’s a jerk, he’s a bully—“

“He’s coming in here, dear,” Mrs. Beasley interrupted her, with obvious interest in her voice.

With a squeak of alarm, Trish shuffled hastily behind the counter on her hands and knees and hunched into as small and inconspicuous a ball as she could.

Nadia blinked.  “Trish, are you out of your—“

“Sh!”

“Oh, you did not just shush me—“

“SHH!” Trish insisted again, knowing full well that she’d pay for it later, and then she pulled her head down into her shoulders as much as her anatomy would allow.

The bell on the door jangled cheerfully then, and a gust of cold air heralded Ian Rafferty’s arrival.

“Hi, there,” Nadia greeted him brightly, surreptitiously giving Trish’s foot a little dig with one of her own.  “Welcome to Heavenly Bites.  What can I get for you?”

“Cup of coffee would be great for starters,” came a voice that was deep but soft, and far less reptilian than Trish expected.  She cocked her head slightly to better catch his words and heard the unmistakable sound of him blowing on his hands and rubbing them together to warm them.  “Cream, no sugar.”

“Sure thing, honey.”

“Your window art,” his voice continued, and Trish straightened ever so slightly at the mention of her work.  “It’s fantastic.  Can I ask who painted it?”

“Absolutely,” Nadia returned, turning her attention to getting the coffee he requested.  “My business partner, Trish.”

“Is she around, by any chance?”

Nadia glanced down at where Trish sat scrunched up and did what Trish thought was a very poor job of suppressing a smirk.  “She’s, um, indisposed at the moment.  Why do you ask?”

“I’ve got a couple of windows that could use a little holiday cheer.  Think she might be interested in the job?”

Nadia gave Trish another brief sideways glance.

Trish shook her head frantically.

“Tell you what.  Leave me your number, and we’ll find out.”  Nadia stepped out of reach before Trish could smack her leg.

“Great, thanks.  Here’s my card.”

“I’ll see that she gets it, Mr.—“  Nadia glanced at the card.  “—Rafferty.  Here’s your coffee, and you, sir, have a very nice day.”

The bell on the door jingled again, and Trish cautiously poked her head up long enough to verify that Ian was indeed gone.  She then ignored the fascinated look Mrs. Beasley was giving her and fixed an icy stare on Nadia.  “I’m going to kill you.  How could you do that?”

Nadia tossed her dark braids over her shoulder.  “Hmph.  Shush me in my own shop…”

“I don’t want to talk to that guy!  I don’t want to have anything to do with him.”

“He seemed nice enough to me,” her friend returned, shrugging unapologetically.  “And easy on the eyes, too.”

“And single,” put in Mrs. Beasley eagerly, one wrinkled hand fluttering over her heart.  “No wedding ring.”

“Of course there’s no ring!  No woman wants to marry the devil!”  Trish sank back down onto the floor and leaned back heavily against the shelves behind her.

“He used to be the devil,” Nadia corrected her, examining the business card he had handed to her.  “Now he’s ‘Ian Rafferty, Landscape Architect’.  And he’s a paying customer, Trish.  Face it, you could use the money.”

“Forget it.  I’m not so hard up that I’d go crawling to Ian Rafferty for a job.”  Trish scowled and folded her arms across her chest.  “I have my dignity, you know.”

“Yeah?  Why don’t you get up off the floor and tell me all about your dignity.”

“Oh, shut up,” Trish muttered, getting to her feet and snatching the card from Nadia’s hand.  Wadding it up, she tossed it in the direction of the trashcan and stalked into the bakery’s kitchen…

Interview & Awesome Giveaway with Julie Ann Walker

Welcome back to Books-n-Kisses Julie Ann.

JulieAnnWalkerFor those who missed your prior visits can you please share with us a little about yourself
Julie:  Hello! *waves* My name is Julie Ann Walker.  I write the bestselling Black Knights Inc. romantic suspense series.  I’m addicted to three things: coffee, handbags, and shoes.  I adore travelling and hope to visit 100 countries before I die – so far I’ve been to 43, which means I still have a lot of plane rides ahead of me.  LOL!  I’ve been married fifteen years to the love of my life.  And I ride my bicycle everyday when the weather is nice.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
Julie:  Well, I got my degree in mathematics, so I suppose the answer to this question in no.  😉  On the other hand, I’ve always written.  It’s just that I treated it more like a hobby because I figured the dream of actually becoming a published author was too big, unattainable for the likes of little ol’ me.  Imagine my surprise, then, when first a literary agent, and then a publisher actually wanted to print my books.  LOL!

Are you a plotter or a pantser or combo of both? And can you explain the difference?
Julie:  I’m a pantser all the way – meaning I write by the seat of my pants.  A plotter is someone who outlines their books beforehand, thinking through all the ins and outs, devising all the plot twists and character arcs.  Sometimes I wish I could do that.  It certainly seems more efficient.  But, alas, my method it to just sit down at the keyboard and go… letting the story take me where it will.  Yeehaw! *wink*

What is your most interesting writing quirk?
Julie:  I don’t know how interesting it is, but I’m obsessed with post-it notes.  If I have an idea about what should happen 20 pages further along in the book, I use a post-it note.  If something has occurred to me that should be added to a scene I’ve already written, I use a post-it note.  If I have an upcoming book reading or signing, I use a post-it note.  If I have a payment due for, say, a conference or something, I use a post-it note.  My office looks like total mayhem, but it’s actually quite organized.  Just DON’T TOUCH MY POST-ITS!  Or I might have to murder you… *gives the evil eye*

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?Born Wild Cover
Julie:  I’d love to!  So, Born Wild is sort of the book BKI fans have been waiting for.  The hero and heroine, Wild Bill Reichert and Eve Edens, have been dancing around each other since the beginning of the series.  We know there’s history between them… deep, dark, delicious history.  And in this book we finally find out what all the hot fuss is about.  Plus, in standard BKI form, there’s a devious villain, some flying bullets, kick butt motorcycles, and, of course, smokin’ hot sexy times.  😉

How did you come with the idea for this story?
Julie:  Like most of my books, I pulled this one straight out of my… ahem… you know.  *shakes head*  I never know where exactly the story will take me until I’m actually finished with it.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
Julie:  Absolutely!  I’ve just started working on the seventh book in the series.  It’s hero is BKI’s crazy cool Latin lover, Carlos “Steady” Santos.  And the heroine is the President’s daughter, Abigail Thompson.  There’s a kidnapping, ransom demands, a race through Southeast Asia, and some sweet lovin’ that’s guaranteed to set the pages on fire.  I’m having a blast writing it!

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
Julie:  I would kill  to meet Suzanne Brockmann.  She is the reigning queen of romantic suspense, and she’s the entire reason I started writing in the genre.  If I ever get the opportunity to meet her, I’ll likely prostrate myself at her feet.  So if you see me on the floor of a hotel lobby, kissing some woman’s toes, you’ll know it’s Suz Brockmann standing before me.  *snicker*

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Julie:  Read, write, read, write, rinse, and repeat until you’ve got something that’s ready to be put out into the world!

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
Julie:  I would love to live abroad in Ireland for a year.  It’s one of my most favorite spots on the planet.  The pubs, the Guinness, the soda bread, the fields of heather, the blarney… *sigh*  Heaven.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
Julie:  My friend, Amanda Carlson, writes some of the best Urban Fantasy out there.  The third book in her series, Cold Blooded, debuted about a month ago, and I can’t wait to dig in!

What is one book everyone should read before they die?
Julie:  Gone With The Wind… without a doubt.  I’ve read it at least a dozen times.  And every time, I find something new and wonderful about the story.  Scarlett is such a difficult heroine.  She’s so complicated and easy to hate, yet she’s amazingly strong and resilient.  I love characters that are deeply three-dimensional.

What is your favorite time of year & why?
Julie:  Summer!  I’m outdoorsy.  And when I can’t go out and play, I get – as my husband so delicately puts it – cranky.   😉

Who is your Celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet them?
Julie:  Currently, I’m a bit enamored of Tom Hardy.  I mean, those lips. Hubba, hubba.  If I ever met him?  Well, I’ll probably try to steal a kiss.  Just a quick one.  Nothing to get me in trouble with Mr. Walker.  LOL!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Julie:  Just a giant cyber hug and my heartfelt thanks for having me back on Books-N-Kisses.  This is always such a treat!
