Kelly’s ARC review of Blind Destiny by Shiloh Walker

TITLE: Blind Destiny
Grimm’s Circle #7
AUTHOR: Shiloh Walker
PUBLICATION DATE: 10/16/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

Heigh ho, heigh ho, it’s back to hell she goes…

Myrsina knows the stories. As one of the oldest of the Grimm, she had a hand in writing most of them, but only she knows the dark origin of the Seven Bloody Sisters. It springs from the place of her birth—and her death. A place of pain and misery to which she plans to never return. Unless forced.

When Luc appears on her doorstep, her heart twists with suppressed longing for the man who can never be hers. The only man who can make her do the impossible—go home.

Luc may be blind, but through their unique, bittersweet connection, even he can see that the task laid before them is ripping Sina’s soul apart. This time it isn’t as simple as fighting a demon that has escaped from the netherplains.

Sina must go back in time—to that cursed ground—and right a wrong that she unknowingly brought about. To write a new ending to a story that may give them both a chance at happily ever after. Assuming they survive.

REVIEW:
While Blind Destiny was not my favorite of all the Grimm Circle stories I still loved being back in the Grimm world.

Luc has lived in the past for way too long.  Now that the love of his life has moved on Luc has to rethink his purpose as a Grimm.  What does he have to offer?  Where does he belong?  And of course that is when Will shows up and send him on his newest mission.  But first he has to go get his new partner.  Sina

Sina has lived with the fact that she has been in love with Luc since the first moment she met him.  But she will never pay second to his wife (will ex-wife) so she has resolved to love him from afar.  But fate seems to have a way to change the things that we want even as we fight them.

Luc & Sina are really a good part.  Both are stubborn, determined and both complete pains in the butt.

Unlike Shiloh’s normal Grimm Circle books we don’t have to wait to the end to figure out who this fairy tale it about.  Which was kind of fun, but I do miss the who is this the whole time I am reading.

If you are a fan of the Grimm Circle books I believe you will enjoy Luc & Sina’s story.  And I am very much looking forward to the next installment in the Grimm’s world.  And I am really hoping one of these days we will get to see Will brought down a notch or two and find his lady love.

Kelly’s review of Lover’s Instinct by Katie Reus

TITLE: Lover’s Instinct – Moon Shifter #1.5
AUTHOR: Katie Reus
PUBLICATION DATE: 08/07/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Novella:
Lupine shifter Nikan Lawless has it bad for Esperanze Cordona, the sweet and curvy woman who only views him as a friend. But when Nikan is assigned to act as Esperanze’s bodyguard during a weekend education conference, he knows it’s the perfect opportunity to seduce her off her feet—away from the pack.

To put his plan into motion Nikan cancels one of their hotel rooms, giving them time to get to know one another in a whole different way. But when a man from Esperanze’s past shows up in need of help, Nikan must shield her from a group of dangerous rogue shifters, all while trying to prove that they’re destined to be mates.

REVIEW:
Lover’s Instinct was a great novella.  But like any good novella it was too short.  I really wanted more of Nikan & Esperanze.

Lover’s Instinct takes place between Alpha Instinct & Primal Possession, but can be read as a stand alone.  Although I would highly recommend reading Alpha Instinct first.

In Lover’s Instinct we meet Esperanze who is the cousin of the female Alpha.  After a string of murders leaves the pack reeling Esperanze decides she need a weekend away.  Just a weekend away to regroup.  While her Alpha’s are letting her go they are not letting her go alone.  They are sending Nikan long to protect her.  Nikan is new to the pack.  He is one of the Warriors that showed up with the new Alpha.  While Esperanze doesn’t mind Nikan at all she is not overly happy he is tagging along with her on her weekend away.

Little does Esperanze know that she is leaving one problem for another and having Nikan by her side will be a very helpful too.

I really can’t say much more than that, but I did really enjoy this novella.

Kelly’s review of Life Cycle by Zoe Winters

TITLE: Life Cycle – Preternatural #4
AUTHOR: Zoe Winters
PUBLICATION DATE: 08/2012
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Immortality can be a bitch…

Tamara has lived nearly two thousand years, trapped by a spell of her own creation. Hunted by her enemy and former lover, she knows there is only one man strong enough to release her from the curse. But will Cain honor her death wish, or keep her for himself, whatever the cost?

Two ancient souls. Two weary fighters, torn between love and hate, forced to decide if the other could be worth living for.

Heat Level 3 of 5.
Some sexually explicit content and innuendo

REVIEW:
Life Cycle is book 4 in Zoe Winters Preternatural series and we FINALLY get Cain’s story.

Cain is our resident leader of the Demon realm and self proclaimed “I don’t need anyone” loaner of the group.  It is a fact that Cain has not made many friends, heck even his own sister-in-law doesn’t like him.  But when Cain is asked to help protect Tam from a serial killer her breaks his #1 rule. Never trust a magic user.  But there is something about Tam, something that disturbs Cain.
Tam is tired of living, tired of her cycling.  But when faced with a serial killer that wants her power, Tam takes matters into her own hands.  She can die by a madman hands who wants to take over the world, or she can ask the leader of the Demon world to killer her.

This two are great.  I love that Tam is always standing up to Cain.  Cain is not use to people not doing his every wish.  But Tam is not everyone.  She is different and challenges Cain in every way possible.  Tam makes Cain feel things that scare and interest him.

This has been my favorite story so far in the Preternatural series.  But I am very excited to see what Zoe has in store for us next.

Kelly’s review of The Catalyst by Zoe Winters

TITLE: The Catalyst – Preternatural #3
AUTHOR: Zoe Winters
PUBLICATION DATE: 06/2012
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
It started with one lost, shivering pup; it may end in a war…

Panthers don’t do responsibility. They don’t do long-term relationships. They definitely don’t raise kids. But when Z discovers a young wolf in the forest, he takes him in, unaware of the powerful beings hunting the pup.

Fiona is a witch who can’t leave her house; the birds have told her something bad will happen. The mailbox is as far as she’ll go, but even that may provide more danger than she’s bargained for. When a wolf pup stumbles into her garden, her safe, wrapped-up world heads for a free fall.

But along with danger, the pup brings a chance at love—a chance an agoraphobic witch and a bachelor panther shifter aren’t likely to find on their own.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: The Catalyst is an ensemble book that also features Jane and Cole (from Blood Lust) and Cain (from Blood Lust and Save My Soul)

REVIEW:
Ahhh, I love the Preternatural world that Zoe has created.  In The Catalyst, book 3 in the series introduces us to a whole new set of characters.  While revisiting some of our favorites from the first two books.

In The Catalyst we meet Z & Fiona.  Z is a werepanther, who loves his solitary bachelor lifestyle.  Yet, Z finds a soft spot in his heart to help an abandoned werewolf pup.  Only problem is that the darn pup has run away and now Z has to track him down and he is not very happy about it.  When Z finally catches up with the pup he is with a witch.  A witch that can speak to animals.  so Z does what any good werepanther would do.  He threatens the witch into helping him, then kidnaps her.
Fiona has not go past her mailbox in years.  You see Fiona suffers from Agoraphobia or a panic disorder that has left her home bound.  So she knows it is a bad idea to go to the mailbox today.  But when she hears a whining in her side yard she does the un-normal thing and detours to see what the noise is.  That is when Fiona finds the werepup.  Doing the right thing Fiona takes the pup in the house and feeds him.  Next thing she knows there is a very angry werepanther has broke into her house and has her cornered.

Z and Fiona are complete opposite in every way, yet they work so well together.

If you have read Zoe’s first two books in the Preternatural series you will love Z & Fiona’s story.  The Catalyst creates a whole new set of problems for the Preternaturals in and around Cary Town.

I would suggest reading this series in order.

REVIEW:
Jake is finally back and the only thing that he want is Shell.  But winner over the broken heart of the only woman he has ever loved is going to be one of the biggest challenges he has faced and Jake has faced many challenges.  But will he be able to win her over or is it too little too late.

Shell is happy that Jake is well and good,  but not happy that he is back and staking claim on her.  But when she learns why he has been gone all this time her broken heart starts to melt back together, but is Shell willing to fall for him again?

When a mad man gunning for the Black Knight Inc employees sets his sights on Shell, these two are put to the ultimate test.  But surviving a mad man is one thing.  Surviving lies, hurt and broken hearts is another story

Another great book by Julie.  Jake and Shell have a history together both fell so hard so fast for each other.  But neither really told the other how they truly felt.  When Jake gets spooked by the demons of his past he does the only thing he can think of to protect Shell.  He pushes her away.   This is a great second chance love story.  And who doesn’t love a second change.  I will say that this book did not make me cry, oh yes there is a lot of emotional parts  But unlike bk 1 Hell on Wheels and bk 2 In Rides Trouble I was not bawling my eyes out.   Still it was a very good story and the set up for book 4….. EEEKKKK bring on the Cajun Rock. Confused?  You will have to read this series to find out what I mean.

Seriously this series is going on to my top 10 list of keepers and read over and over and overs.

Kelly’s review of Blaze by Joan Swan

TITLE: Blaze – Phoenix Rising #2
AUTHOR: Joan Swan
PUBLICATION DATE: 09/25/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The hotter they come, the harder they fall…

With a man like him, every mission becomes personal…
Ever since FBI agent Keira O’Shay started tracking a young boy named Mateo, she’s felt a connection even her empathic abilities can’t explain. She needs to save Mateo from the cult leader holding him hostage. Nothing can interfere with that—not even the reappearance of Luke Ransom, the hot-as-hell fire captain she’s regretted walking out on for three long years.

Losing Keira left Luke vulnerable—in every way. When they were together, the powers each possesses were mysteriously enhanced. But it’s the sexy, surprising woman beneath the tough exterior that Luke’s really missed. Even if she betrayed him utterly. And even if agreeing to help her uncover a government conspiracy means watching his life and his heart go up in flames again

REVIEW:
Blaze is book 2 in Joan Swan’s Phoenix Rising series.  Blaze is grabs you from the page one and keeps you turning the pages until the end.  You will want to scream at the characters and then reach for the tissues, root for the characters and then want to slap them upside the head.  There are some surprising turns of events that will shape the next few books in this series.  New characters from the past walk into the team’s life and will change the fabric of who they all are. But even with this the team is left with more questions than answers as to who and what really happened to them.

I loved Luke in FEVER and loved him more in BLAZE.  Luke is just an all around great guy.  He loves his friends, family and can’t let go of the love of his life.  He is willing to go the extra mile to do anything to keep her, but will even that be enough to winner her back?

Keira has had a very rough life and she is always ready to cut and run the minute life starts closing.  The only constant in her life has been her love for Luke.  But she even throw that away.  But when Luke pops back into her life she is not sure if she can turn him away again, but is she strong enough to face the demons of her past in order to move on and live her life with Luke?

Luke & Kiera find themselves thrown together in order to save a group of kids from a madman.  Little do they know the journey that they are about to go on and how one little boy will change everything for all of them.

Joan is such a great writer.  I love how she tugs at my heartstrings the whole way through this book.  Like any good author she loves to make us as readers suffer all the emotional highs and lows that she can.    If you enjoyed FEVER you will love BLAZE!! I am very much looking forward to want is next in the Phoenix Rising series.

Kelly’s review of Primal Possession by Katie Rues

TITLE: Primal Possession – Moon Shifters #2
AUTHOR: Katie Rues
PUBLICATION DATE:  9/4/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
To protect her, he will unleash the beast within…

As his pack’s second-in-command, lupine shifter Liam Armstrong gives orders and takes what he wants—until he meets red-headed, blue-eyed December McIntyre. Liam knows the human beauty is his intended mate the moment he sees her, but December is far too strong-willed to accept his protection.

December, whose brother is the town sheriff, has every reason to mistrust shifters after one killed her youngest sibling. But the forceful and handsome Liam has gotten under her skin in a way she hadn’t thought possible, and the desire she feels for him is almost too much to bear.

When a radical hate group targets all humans known to sympathize with paranormal beings, December is attacked in her bookstore. Reluctantly, she turns to the only one who can help her: Liam. And he is going to take her to places within herself she never knew existed

REVIEW:
Welcome back to the Moon Shifter world.  I know that I was very happy to be back in it.  If you have not read Alpha Instinct I would highly recommend you read it first.  You could read Primal Possession, but so much happens in Alpha Instinct to set up for Primal Possession.

I loved Liam in Alpha Instinct, and was super excited to read his book.  Liam is the second (well third, after his Alpha and his Alpha’s Mate) in command of the newly formed Armstrong-Cordona pack and he has finally found his mate.  But that is where things get a little tricky, December is human and well she is not very fond of shifters.  Liam is determined to win her over no matter what.   But with two attempts on December’s life Liam has his hands full.  Protecting her from his enemies and trying to win over her stubborn heart.

December is determined to not fall for Liam.   But as with all best laid plans they don’t always work out just right.  When December is attached after a failed date she know that only person that can protect her is Liam.  But this means she has to be close to him and being close to him make her crazy, crazy about him and what she wants for the future.
Really loved this book.  Loved seeing the softer side of Liam even if he tries to messed it all up.  I am looking forward to what is next in the Moon Shifter series.  I loved learning more about secondary characters Kat and her now ex Jayce.  These two are going to be so much fun to read about.

In Rides Trouble

Black Knight Inc #2
AUTHOR: Julie Ann Walker
PUBLICATION DATE:   09/04/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Rebel with a Cause

Becky “Rebel” Reichert never actually goes looking for trouble. It just has a tendency to find her. Like the day Frank Knight showed up at her door, wanting to use her motorcycle shop as a cover for his elite special ops team. But Becky prides herself on being able to hang with the big boys-she can weld, drive, and shoot just as well as any of them.

Man with a Mission

Munitions, missiles, and mayhem are Frank’s way of life. The last thing the ex-SEAL wants is for one brash blonde to come within fifty feet of anything that goes boom. Yet it’s just his rotten luck when she ends up in a hostage situation at sea. Come hell or high water, he will get her back-whether she says she needs him or not.

REVIEW:
Aaahhh, book 2 in Julie Ann Walker’s Black Knight Inc. series was just as good as book 1.

In Ride Trouble picks up right where Hell on Wheels leaves off (so if you are thinking about reading this series I would highly recommend you start with book 1) with Becky still on vacation.  But soon enough the resident queen greasemonkey of Black Knight Inc, finds herself and her best friend Eve in a bit of a pickle.  Being taken hostage by pirates was not on her list of things to do on vacation.  But Becky knows it is just a matter of time before her big brother and her boss Frank will be coming for her.

When word of Becky’s kidnapping reaches Frank he goes a little nuts.  Frank will not stop until Becky is safe and home with him under his roof no matter the cost.  And it almost cost Frank everything.  Because everything he wants and never thinks he can ever have, almost  doesn’t  make it home.

Love, love, loved Frank and Becky’s book.  These two are like oil and vinegar.  They don’t mix will, but just like any good vinegate if you shake them hard enough they learn to work together.
Frank and Becky both want the same thing, but neither is willing to take that first step.  But when that step is taken, OH BOY!!!!  But just like oil and vinegar the minute you stop shaking the bottle they separate again, these two really need to learn to communicate.    But in the end I think they finally got it right.

Again, Julie had me crying, laughing and on the edge of my seat nervous.   I am so excited for the next book in this series Rev’ It Up.

Kelly’s review of Chilled by Kendra Elliot

 Chilled
AUTHOR: Kendra Elliot
PUBLICATION DATE:   8/14/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
As a forensic nurse on a search and rescue team, Brynn Nealey braves a dangerous blizzard to find the survivors of a plane crash in the Cascade Mountains. Joining her is Alex Kinton, a former US marshal with self-destructive tendencies. Alex lies his way onto Brynn’s team to find the man who killed his brother—and then return the favor. But once the team members reach the plane’s wreckage, they discover everyone aboard has perished…except for the man Alex is hunting. Alex will do whatever it takes to track his target through the vast, snowy wilderness.

As the temperatures drop, however, so do Alex’s defenses. His contact with the sharp, kindhearted Brynn makes his lust for vengeance difficult to reconcile with his growing feelings for a woman who risks her life to help others. What will happen to Alex’s savage instincts when he finally has the opportunity to confront his brother’s killer?

In Chilled, the next thrilling tale in the Bone Secrets saga, Golden Heart finalist Kendra Elliot weaves an icy tale of cold nights, cold hearts, and cold-blooded killers.

REVIEW:

A plane crash.  A search team.  A murderer on the loose.

This was a great suspense romance. From the beginning you feel like you are sucked into the SAR’s team journey.  While this is Brynn’s story you get to know each of the cast of and fall in love with all of them. So much so I wanted to know more about all of them.  I am hoping that Kendra will be writing a story for a few of them.  But back to the review.

I love the suspense of this book.  We know who the bad guy is, or at least we think we do. But yet we don’t know all the variable of the whys, the hows, or the true who’s.  Kendra takes up to the very end of the book before we truly understand everything that is happening.  But along the way we have a very sweet and tender beginning of a love story if they can just get off this mountain alive.

If you love a good suspense book I would highly suggest ordering a copy of Chilled.  I am very much looking forward to the next book Kendra has in store for us.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Deep in the Scottish Highlands, a stalwart clansman and a wayward bride confront duty and desire…

A Man of Misfortune

With his reckless, drunken brother bringing ruin to the clan, and the lass he’s loved all his life in the clutches of a violent husband, the last thing Thayne MacGowan needs is a spirited, sharp-tongued damsel to contend with—no matter how enticing she may be…

A Woman With A Secret

Having narrowly escaped an objectionable arranged marriage, Amalie is starting a new life—with a new identity. But her freedom is cut short when a surly but irresistibly handsome Highlander is forced to take her as his bride. If only he knew who she really was…

An Unlikely Love

Fate designs an improbable match, and a battle of wills ensues. As Amalie struggles to protect her identity, Thayne finds himself fighting for an unexpected love—and a passion neither can refuse

REVIEW:
Ok, I have to admit I am not overly wild about Highlander books.  Yes, I know many of you are.  And I can kinda see the appeal, but there is something about them that I just can not engage with.  I am not sure if it is the dialog or just the world in general.  So take my review with a grain of salt.

Thayne is a bit, okay a lot, of an ass as a hero.  Not only does he force Amalie to go along with his plan, when she saves his back he is not very greatful.  Not only does he use the whole “I am the lesser of two evils” link on her over and over again, when he finally gets what he is after he is not very nice about it.  I tried to like Thayne, I really did.  And at times I thought that maybe this is the time that he is going to turn around, but sadly it took the whole book right up to the very last page for me to finally kinda like the guy.

If you are a fan of Jackie Ivie or love Highlander books I am sure you will enjoy A Perfect Knight, but for me it just was not my cup of tea.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Held captive in a basement prison, wrapped in silver chains, the vampire Gideon is too weak to fight the monster who enslaves him. For years, she’s tapped his precious blood like a fountain of youth – sustaining him with human females she captures for his pleasure. But with the latest victim she brings him, he senses something intriguingly different. Something dangerous, yet oh so tempting.

REVIEW:
This was my 1st Amanda Ashley book and I have to say that did really enjoy this book.  Except for one small part.  Kay our Heroine had to do something in order to spare the our hero from further harm, and I really don’t like reading about that.  While I understand the whole bad guy using the “you said you would do anything” play, I still don’t like it.

That being said I enjoyed the rest of the book.  I enjoyed Gideon & Kay’s story.  If it was not for fate and the twisted mind of a crazy witch these two would have never met.  I guess being in the wrong place and the wrong time work out for the best for these two.

If you are already a fan of Amanda Ashley I believe you will love this story very much.  If you are new to Amanda, like me, never fear Desire the Night can easily be read as a stand alone. And I would highly recommend this book

REVIEW:
This was a good 1st book in Carrie Ann Ryan’s new series.   I really enjoyed the twist Carrie puts on the paranormal world in this book.   I loved the cast of characters that Carrie creates and am looking forward to more books to learn more about them.  I really want to know more about Dante.  But I am getting ahead of myself.  Dust of My Wings is Lily and Shade’s story.

Shade finds himself tasked with protecting the supernatural worlds secret.  Because if it was not for him a mere human would not have her hands on evidence that there other things out there besides humans.  Should be a simple smash and crap task.  But Shade learns very quickly that nothing involving Lily will ever be simple.

Lily might hate her boss but she loves her work.  Her newest project is to identify a strange blue powder that her boss demands she gets done now.  But after running many test Lily is still not able to identify what it is.  Little does Lily know just how much that little vial of blue powder will forever change her life.

As I said earlier I enjoyed this book.  I enjoyed the world that Carrie created and am looking forward to more books in this series.
