Interview & Giveaway with Em Petrova

Hi Em, Welcome to For the Love of Books.  Thank you for taking the time to sit down and talk with me.
For The Love of Books: Please tell us a little about yourself
EM: I’m a multi-published erotic romance author, wife and mother of four. I make my nest in backwoods Pennsylvania where I am lucky enough to submerge myself in my imaginary worlds. I consider myself a publishing whore and have books from several publishers including Red Sage, Breathless Press, Loose Id, Ellora’s Cave, Etopia Press, Decadent Publishing and some anthologies from Sizzler. Also I have a new book coming October 1 under the pen name Em Peters—a mainstream paranormal called Moon Child from Whiskey Creek Press.
FLB: I read on your blog that you wrote your 1st book at the age of 12.  So it is safe to say that you always wanted to be an author?
EM: I never dreamed I could become an author. I was raised to see the practical side of life and though my family encouraged creative outlet, I never once thought I could make a career of it. A few years ago I realized writing had become my passion and I decided to make it a goal to be published.

FLB: Tell us about Deux

EM: Deux is about finding love in an unusual place at a time in a woman’s life when she least expects it. A lonely divorcee Margot falls for a happily married woman named Jane who seeks the missing component in her life. This is the first book of The French Kiss Chronicles and is available from Breathless Press. Deux:  http://www.breathlesspress.org/Book/305

FLB: Tell us about Trois

EM: Trois is Book Two of The French Kiss Chronicles. The story of Margot and Jane is continued when Jane’s husband demands a taste of the women’s decadent pleasure. This book has been Miz Love’s top read and a Night Owl Romance Top Pick. You can find it here.
FLB: What is up next in this series?

EM: QUATRE is the third book. In French quatre means “four.” I bet you can imagine what’s in store with this book! It will be released October from Breathless Press.

FLB: Can you tell us about your current work in progress?

EM: Oooh, yes, I love talking about this book! It’s a ménage a trios called BLOWN DOWN with two hunky logger heroes and the sexy boss who torments them. It’s set in rural Pennsylvania, which is close to my heart since it’s my stomping ground. Who wouldn’t love chainsaw-wielding studs?

FLB: I love to know what is in authors To Read Pile… What is in yours?
EM: As an author, I love to support my fellow authors. In my to-be-read pile is The Lothario Series from Red Sage author Roz Lee as well as Suzanne Rock’s Immortal Realm Series from Red Sage. I recently finished Gem Sivad’s “Quincy’s Woman” from Ellora’s Cave. And next on my list is JoAnne Kenrick’s “When a Mullo Loves a Woman” from Decadent Publishing. Can’t wait to dig into these hot reads!
FLB: Who would you say is your favorite author? Or who do you look up to most?
EM: Hands down my favorite author is Anne Rice. I adore her rich worlds and intricate plots. I strive to create a bit of macabre in all my books in her honor.

FLB: How do you come up with the ideas for your stories?
EM: My characters speak to me first. I clean houses part-time for extra cash and you wouldn’t believe who pops up while I’m vacuuming, scrubbing and dusting. I listen to my characters for a few days before I uncover their secret desires. At that point the plots usually reveal themselves to me. Mindless work really does breed great plot twists!
FLB: What are your writing rituals? Anything you have to have while writing?
EM: I’d love to say I write hot sex in a silky bathrobe with a glass of Zinfandel at my elbow, but with four kids I carve time out of the day any way I can. In fact, author Suzanne Rock and I have a couple free workshops about this very subject coming up at the Coffee Time Romance yahoo loop and during the Savvy Authors Summer Symposium. Our class is called “Writing Sex Scenes When You’re Not Feeling Sexy.” It offers tips on adding spice to your writing during those humdrum periods of your life. I’d love to see you all there! You can learn more about this at http://smolderingheat.wordpress.com
FLB: Is there anything else you would like to add?
EM: Thank you so much for your time today. I enjoy hearing from readers, so please leave comments! Yes, you can ask anything!
FLB: Thank you Em for taking time to sit down with me.   I look forward to reading your next book

Guest Blog with Gweena Sebastian & Giveaway

For the Love of Books has let Gweena Sebastian take over the blog today.  Gweena is a writer of military romances about gay lovers.
The floor is all yours Gweena,

It’s a character flaw
I get into some pretty spirited conversations with writing friends of mine when it comes to the topic of character. Let’s just say I’m a bit passionate about it. I love a lively debate, especially when we don’t agree on character and what he or she would do. I find it fascinating to see another person’s reason for arriving at why a character would or wouldn’t do something and why I may see it entirely differently.
When it comes to my writing, I’m even more passionate. I’m a character writer, my stories come from that angle and it’s the only way I know how to write. I need my characters layered and rich, with back stories, emotions and flaws. Especially flaws. My characters have all kinds of faults and flaws.
But let’s face it, who in this world is perfect? And perfection to me means tedium. It’s highly overrated in my opinion.
To date, probably my most flawed character is from my first novel, Lost and Found. Mark Connor is a former Vietnam veteran who comes with a boatload of issues. He’s an alcoholic and smoker who makes no effort to hide his bitterness or anger with the world in general. He’s also gay. He’s controversial as I found out through various reviews. People either really liked Mark and rooted for him in the hopes that he would eventually accept happiness when it’s offered to him, or they absolutely hated him. Either way, I consider it a win. Why? Because he was being talked about. They’re talking about a character I created and I couldn’t be more flattered.
Some characters seem to be a bit flat at first blush. But if you take the time to get to know them and see what motivates them, you find yourself looking past the surface noise and seeing what’s really going on underneath. Sometimes it takes another person’s angle on that character to wake you up to the possibilities.
I don’t want easy characters. What I do want are characters who invoke a host of emotions and make you think. Even if you don’t necessarily like someone like Mark Connor, I want you to appreciate and understand where he comes from and why. There’s nothing neat and clean about him. He’s a lot of raw and sharp edges and I made him that way deliberately. But under all of that he is a man who is still grieving over losing the love of his life, even forty years later.
I feel the best stories are those that are character driven. In my case, I tend to come up with the character and let him tell me his story. What happens, how it happens, why it happens and how he reacts to it is all based in what makes up that character.
How many of you get attached to a character on a television show? Come on, you know what I mean. You feel like you know him or her, inside and out, what they will say or do next. Then something happens that has you dumbfounded, confused and mouth hanging open because the character you thought you knew did something completely out-of-character. You know what I’m talking about. It’s what you’re ranting about the next day with your friends, saying how the hell did that happen? It’s just not right, what were they thinking?
You’ve ‘invested’ in that character and then someone changes it up and they didn’t consult you about it first. Uh huh. I’ve been there too. But it’s got you talking and more than likely you aren’t the only one. And there it is, the character debate I mentioned at the beginning.
The best characters are the ones that make people talk, because that means they make you think. That’s a good thing in my opinion. If I can motivate you to talking about a character like Mark, then I’ve done my job.

Blurb for VN2- my new novel available July 29th, 2011

Ian Davidson is a Truebred, son of a general and a soldier uncomfortably destined for an officer’s role in the military. Worse, he’s got a gift; he can read other’s thoughts and feel their emotions. His father has used him and it to get ahead in his own career despite the fact that Ian can’t quiet the voices in his own head. But when the Bond chooses Nathan as his mate, the pain ebbs and the voices cease. If only he could be sure bonding with Nate doesn’t mean he’s going to be controlled by a partner as much as he’s been controlled by his father, and his destiny…

Several months ago, Sergeant Nathan Williams lost his Bond partner in battle and along with it, his will to live. But a trip to the local recreation hub for black market supplies buys him more than he bargains for – a Bond with a new partner, Lieutenant Ian Davidson. There is something about Ian that forces Nathan to believe that the Bond between them could be stronger than his previous one. If only he can convince Ian to give in and give the Bond a chance.

When Nathan is captured on VN2, the worst post in existence, Ian is forced into new territory that he is not familiar with – the leadership of a reluctant special forces unit and his newly discovered feelings for Nathan. The struggle to accept the Bond spills into the battlefield, and Nathan is pushed to the brink with memories of his old Bond. It becomes sexual tension hell when event after event threatens to tear the couple a part when both wants nothing more than to tear each others clothes off.

Review & Giveaway of The Unwilling Bride by Candy Little

Order Here

Beautiful and high-spirited Caitlin Gallagher has no desire to be married. When she’s forced into an arranged marriage, she vows to loathe the man. Her anger is kindled even more when she finds out he was born in England. Her family was forced to flee Ireland and move to America because of the war with England. Now this Englishman is stripping her freedom away. Dillon Cade is her enemy twice!

Gentle Dillon Cade has lived a quiet life for thirteen years in Norfolk, Virginia. When he agrees to marry a young maiden so she can stay in America while her parents are deported back to Ireland, he gets more than he bargains for. As he uses his newspaper to fight President Adams’ sedition acts and help Thomas Jefferson get elected, he must also deal with an unwilling bride, who now disturbs his peaceful life.

Can Caitlin work through her anger, finding faith in God and love in Dillon’s arms? Can Dillon tolerate her behavior long enough to win her trust?

Guest Reviewer Natasha’s Thoughts:

First off let me just say WOW!! This is the first historical romance I have ever read, and I sure wasn’t prepared for it!! As an avid history buff, I loved the setting and writing style. It was a fascinating read. I have to say that I have no idea how Dillon put up with Caitlin for so long. She is down right nasty, immature and mean at every turn. I hated her for so long and then all of a sudden I loved her. I have no idea how this author was able to make me forget all the terrible things Caitlin said and did; then turn her around into an amazing character. I laughed in this book, and I cried. Caitlin is so headstrong, stubborn and defiant. She is certainly a force to be reckoned with and will never bend to anyone’s will. Her passion and strong mind are such an admiration when she uses them in the right way.
Dillon is the most patient, loving husband. He does everything to indulge and care for his wife and gets put down and berated at every turn. Yet he pushes on and vows to make Caitlin love him. Man did he have his work cut out for him. It was such a rocky road for these two, with obstacles, hatred and so much tragedy standing in their way. The author also incorporated other stories of love and loss along with Dillon and Caitlin and I loved that. It showed the lives of everyone around them and how they all fit together. Although I will say that some of these characters actions left me thinking “Really?? Who the heck does something like that?” but it all falls into place in time. It really was a great read, and really opened my eyes to historical romances and how intriguing they can be.
Thanks so much to Kelly for allowing me to read this awesome story and allowing me to write my thoughts on it!!

To Celebrate National Talk In Elevator Day, I am hosting an Interview & 2 (yes 2!) Giveaways with Laura Kaye

[See down below for TWO separate giveaway opportunities!]

Kelly: I walk into the building and head towards the elevator. I hit the button and wait.  The elevator doors open, and I walk in, hit the button to the top floor. The doors close and someone taps me on the shoulder *GASP* I whirl around and see Laura Kaye laughing at me…

Kelly: Good Lord, give a girl a heart attack much? *gasping for air, trying to slow my heart down*

Laura: Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you, Kelly! Gee, I sure hope you’re not scared of elevators. I just wanted to say hi.

Kelly: *laughs* Well, hello yourself! Thanks for doing this interview today with For the Love of Books. But, Laura, what you are doing in the elevator?  I thought we were meeting up on the top floor?

Laura: Change of venue! Today is National Talk in an Elevator Day, so it seems more appropriate to meet here, don’t you think?

Kelly: Alright then, let’s talk about Hearts in Darkness.

Laura: I’d love to! Hearts in Darkness is my debut contemporary romance about two strangers who find acceptance and dare to find love while trapped for four hours in a pitch-black elevator. Here’s the blurb:

Makenna James thinks her day can’t get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out.

Caden Grayson is amused when a redhead literally falls at his feet. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he’s terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he’s trapped in his own worst nightmare.

To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

Kelly: How did you come up with this story?

Laura: Two things provided inspiration for this story. First, I work in a building where the elevator fails. A lot. I’ve only been stuck in it once, for about a minute, but it’s not unusual for it to stop working every couple weeks. Second, I was playing the “what if” game with myself—a great source of story inspiration—and asked What if two opposites got trapped together somewhere? And what if one of them was claustrophobic or scared of the dark? It all clicked together pretty quick after that!

Kelly: *looks around* Do you know why this elevator is taking so long?

Laura: *shrugs* I’m sure it’ll start up sooner or later. Don’t worry. Shouldn’t be more than, oh, four hours to so…

Kelly: Hmm. Too bad Caden’s not here, then. *blushes*

Laura: *chuckles and nods* Amen to that. *long, dreamy sigh*

Kelly: Have we seen the last of Caden & MJ?

Laura: How about a really unhelpful answer? *laughs* Probably! I definitely plan to write a free read that will be available through my publisher, The Wild Rose Press, but I probably will not write any additional novella-length stories about them. Sorta pains me to say that, but I’m pretty certain their story’s told.

Kelly: Tell me a little about your other books Forever Freed and Just Gotta Say.

Laura: *sits down* Might as well get comfortable. *Kelly sits too*

Well, Forever Freed is my debut paranormal romance, novel-length, about a reclusive, empathic vampire who falls in love with the woman he planned to kill and her young daughter, then must fight his ancient guilt, bloodlust, lie by omission and an old vampire rival that threatens everything he holds dear. It was the first novel I wrote and the first I sold, and will always hold a special place in my heart!
Just Gotta Say is my debut erotic romance. It’s a contemporary ménage a quatres about a woman who plays out a particular fantasy with her guy roommates, hoping that being with all of them won’t jeopardize her long-term chance of being with the one she wants the most. Forever Freed is available now in print and ebook, and Just Gotta Say will be out in the early fall as an ebook.

Kelly: So Hearts in Darkness is Contemporary, Forever Freed is Paranormal and Just Gotta Say is Erotic. Which genre is your favorite to write?

Laura: My first love is paranormal romance. It’s what I most love to read and most identify with as a writer. However, I enjoy writing in multiple genres. I never sit down to write one or the other—the characters appear in my head, start talking to me, and as I get to know them, the type of story emerges. I have two series releasing late this year, and they’re both paranormal (one’s a contemporary fantasy romance based on Greek mythology, and the other’s a dark paranormal story that takes me back to my vampire roots!).

Kelly: *I still don’t think we’ve moved. Really must be trapped. Gulp* What are you currently working on?

Laura: Right now, I’m working on book two in my Hearts of the Anemoi series, a four-book contemporary fantasy romance series about directional wind gods the Greeks associated with the seasons. Book 1, called North of Need, releases on November 1. Book 2, my current work in progress, is called West of Want, and releases March 2012.

Kelly: Are any of these other stories set in elevators?

Laura: No, but we won’t hold that against them! *winks*

Kelly: Thank you Laura for taking time out of your busy schedule to hang out with me in this damn elevator and answer some questions.

Laura: Any time. Just name an elevator, and I’ll be there!

Kelly: What do you say we do a giveaway to one lucky person?

Laura: I’d say that’s a great idea. So, in addition to the Treasure Hunt giveaway—see the details below—one commenter who shares a story about talking to a stranger in an elevator (preferably TODAY, but we’ll be flexible!) will win a free ebook of Hearts in Darkness! Comments through 7/30 12 noon PST.

Kelly: Good, now let me out of this elevator. *Laura pushes a button and the doors open* How’d you do that?

Laura: I have a special relationship with elevators. *laughs*

Kelly: You trapped me in here on purpose?

Laura: *laughing her ass off*

Kelly: It’s a good thing I like you…. *walks away shaking head, takes about five steps and turns around*  Hey Laura, why don’t you tell the folks about your Treasure Hunt……..

HINT: the secret word looks like this picture. But is hidden somewhere on my page.

Two strangers. Four hours. One pitch-black elevator.

A Triple Blog Interview & Giveaway with Indie Author Zoe Winters…..

Good afternoon everyone!!  For the Love of Books, Book Monster Reviews, and LITERAL ADDICTION are very pleased to welcome Indie author Zoe Winters to our sites today.
Zoe Winters writes quirky (and sometimes dark) paranormal romance, and is the creator of the Preternaturals series.  Her favorite colors are rainbow and clear.
My idea of what Zoe looks like….. Amazing right?

When asked, “What’s your goal as a writer?”, Zoe replied with:  “I want to write a book that makes you almost pee your pants because you don’t want to put it down long enough to go to the bathroom. I want to write a book that you miss meals for. I want to write a book you miss bathing for. I want to grab hold of you and not let go until the very last page, where you crumble to the floor in a blissful heap, ask for a cigarette, and say: ‘Damn, was it good for you too,’ then tell 300 of your closest friends about it on Twitter.”  J  LOL!

Now if that doesn’t make you want to go out and find her books ASAP, we’re not sure what will!  That said, let’s find out more about Zoe’s Preternaturals series and take a brief look at each of the books.
Order Here
Blood Lust:  The first book in the Preternaturals series, which is actually a compilation of 3 different novellas (all available for individual purchase on Amazon), Blood Lust gives readers a snapshot look at the world of the Preternaturals. Here are brief synopses about each novella:
1)  KEPT (also available free. Click HERE):  As a cat therian (shifter), Greta’s blood is already sought after to enhance  spells and potions, but due to a quirk of her birth, her blood is potent enough to kill for.  When her tribe plans to sacrifice her, Greta must ally herself with Dayne, the dangerous local sorcerer, and the only person strong enough to protect her.
2)  CLAIMED:  For a vampire, Anthony isn’t a picky eater, but he’s drawn to Charlee’s blood more than any other.  Like a fine wine saved for a special occasion, he’s denied himself this pleasure.  But one night, high from the potent magical blood of another, he claims his prize and loses control. Ashamed of almost killing the one woman who means anything to him, he wipes her memory of the event.  When Charlee awakens with complete amnesia, Anthony is the only one who can clean up the mess he’s made.
3)  MATED:  Because of the vampiric blood that has run through her veins since birth, Jane has been a target for vampires who resent a human being “kindred.”  She’s forced to disguise herself as a vampire groupie to appease them and safeguard her life.  When she’s abruptly given to Cole, the leader of the werewolf pack, to satisfy a gambling debt, she discovers the blood running through her veins has a far greater impact on her destiny than she ever imagined.

The second installment of the Preternaturals series was released on January 31, 2011 and has gotten rave reviews from fans.  Let’s take a brief look at what Save My Soul is all about:  All he’s asking for is her soul .  After buying the antebellum home she’s fantasized about since childhood, Anna Worthington discovers Luc, a dangerously seductive incubus who has been trapped in the house by a fifty-year-old curse. To rid herself of her problem house guest she’ll call on a priest, gypsies, ghost hunters, and the coven of witches from lust bunny hell. All she has to do is resist him long enough to break the spell so they can go their separate ways. If she doesn’t, she could die. And that would be the best case scenario.
Now that we’ve learned more about Zoe’s books, let’s get to know the author behind the Preternaturals a little better.
For the Love of Books/Book Monster Reviews/LITERAL ADDICTION/  Hi Zoe!, We’re very happy to have you with us today!  Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to drop by and spend some time with us!
Zoe: Thanks for having me. 🙂
1)  How/when did you start writing?
Zoe: I know I was writing novels by Jr. High but I honestly don’t remember if I was writing before that. I know by that time I was getting serious enough about it that it was what I wanted to be when I grew up.
Order Here
2)  Can you please explain for those of us that don’t know much about it, what being an “Indie author” really means?
Zoe: It just means that I’m independent. Just like an indie band or filmmaker. No one else controls my art but me.
3)  In your opinion, what are the two biggest pros & cons to being an Indie writer?
Zoe: For me there are no cons. I’m not saying everything is perfect and wonderful all the time, only that I don’t really look at it in those terms and the pros can be summed up as: Full creative control. I don’t want to be someone else’s serf.
4)  Do you use social media to help connect with your readers and promote your work?
Zoe: Yes. I use Twitter, Facebook, and my blog. Though I don’t use any of the above as much as I used to. I’m shifting slowly from being pro-active and “out there” to interacting with the readers who come to me. I guess you can say I’m becoming rather hermit-y.
Order Here
5)  Are there ways that an Indie author can deliver a satisfying reading experience better than a traditional publisher?  If so, what do you feel they are?
Zoe: I’m not really sure how to answer that. I don’t like to create an “Us vs. Them”. I’m sure I did at one time, whether intentionally or not, but yeah, I don’t want to go down that road again. I have personal feelings about certain things with regards to indie vs. trad but I don’t want to keep fighting that fight. I think I should be celebrating indie rather than constantly looking back to the other path and ‘what’s wrong with it’.
6)  What is your favorite supernatural being (or as we sometimes like to call them, “Supe Group” – i.e Vampires, Shifters, Weres, Fae, etc)?
Zoe: Hehe I like “Supe Group”. Either vampires or demons (incubus specifically).
7) What are some of your favorite television shows and movies?
Zoe: Anything Joss Whedon had a hand in. Firefly, Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse. I feel like I’m leaving out a Joss Whedon series, but maybe not.
8)  If you could have any super power at all, what would it be and why?
Zoe: Teleportation. I’m not sure I can say why without just restating the power LOL. It’s fairly self-explanatory haha.

9)  What was the inspiration behind the Preternaturals series?
Zoe: I’m not sure there is any one inspiration for the series because it didn’t start out as a series idea. I’d written Save My Soul. Then I wrote Kept. Kept wasn’t even supposed to be connected. It was supposed to be a contest entry but I didn’t make the deadline. I released Kept to try to start building a fan base. At that time I had the vague idea that Save My Soul might be the start of a series, but I had no specific series plans until I came up with the idea for Claimed, the second novella that eventually became part of “Blood Lust”. By the time I had the second one done, I had an idea for a third one.
I figured out a way to tie the third book into Save My Soul so it could all be one world. And having three novellas gave me enough for a print release. So I made that book one and Save My Soul book 2. Of course by this time, I have about 10 books planned, and I have a much more solid world. It came together in a rather haphazard way, but there is nothing haphazard about it now.
10)  Do you have a time frame as to when the third book might be released?
Zoe: I’m hoping by the end of the year.
11)   Can you give us any insight into some of the things we can expect as the series progresses, and how many books are planned for the series?
Zoe: Right now I have ten planned. I may go over that. It just depends on how I feel about it and how the fans feel about it when we get there. There is nothing worse than a series that has passed its prime that just keeps getting crappier and crappier. After book 10 if it’s still strong and fans are still excited about it, I’ll keep going. As the series progresses Cain will get his own book (and will have a mate). We’ll also travel into a future world where everyone knows about the preternaturals. Things start getting weird by book 4, and really weird beyond that. Right now a lot of things that are happening are setting up future stuff.
12)  Do you have a writing routine?  Certain things you must have with you for the process to begin, etc?
Zoe: No, I really just sit down and write. I try not to get too ritualistic or precious about it.
13)  What are the best and worst parts of writing for you?
Zoe: I like it all. Except when I don’t. LOL. There is no one part that I always like or always hate.
Short Story of Greta going to heat.

14)  What have you always wanted to be asked in an interview but never were?  And could you answer that for us?
Zoe: I’m not sure I’ve ever had a question I wished someone would ask but never did. People generally ask all the pertinent questions about the series. Anything beyond that would be spoilers which I can’t do. And I generally don’t answer personal questions in interviews.
15)  So, what’s next for Zoe Winters?  What do you have planned in the upcoming months?
Zoe: Trying to get books 3 and 4 finished so I can release them.
16)  Is there anything specific you would like to say to your readers while we have you here today?
Zoe: Thanks for reading. Without readers it’s all pretty much textual masturbation.
FTLOB/BMR/L.A.:   Zoe, thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer our questions! We wish you the best of luck with the Preternaturals series, and all of your future endeavors.  We would love to have you back when you’re ready to promote the thirdPreternaturals book if you’re free! J
Zoe: Thanks for having me, that sounds great!

The Ethics of Twitter and My Master Plan for World Domination

When I went to a romance convention not long ago, I had someone pull me aside because she recognized me from Twitter. “You crack me up,” she said, “and I LOVE your book.” To which I’m sure I blushed. Or had a witty retort. Actually, I think I stood there staring at her like she was crazy.
Me? You follow ME? I mean, sure I know there are people who can see what I say on Twitter, but to be followed. That’s a different deal altogether. It’s tempting to say that everyone who’s “following” me on Twitter is Following me, but the truth is, most of them aren’t. I’m sure you’re like this as well, but I “follow” some people because they’re colleagues or friends. I am not their Follower.
(On a side note, I hate the word “follower” on Twitter. When Twitter says I have 500 followers, I feel like I should be mixing evil Kool-Aid or coming up with a Master Plan of some kind. I prefer to think of them as friends, because that’s what they are.)
One of the things this woman said to me was that even though I was a published author (I admit, I laughed to hear that out loud—this being my first sale), I still talked to her like she was a real person. “And you are hilarious.” You are too kind, really. Or delusional. While I do generally try to be dry and sarcastic on Twitter, I rarely think anyone is paying attention.
But what this woman taught me is that people are paying attention. Not just to what I say, but to how I interact with other people, how I handle ranting, how I interact with my publisher and my fellow authors. People are watching me. People are watching you. What we do and say matters.
I say this because someone told me once, “Just write a good book and the rest will take care of itself.” Well, I don’t think that’s true anymore. You write a good book, you interact with people on social media, you guest blog (which, by the way, is an absolute blast!), and people care what you say EVERYWHERE. Every. Where.
I am generally a nice person, and I genuinely want to meet people and hear about them. I spend most of my time interacting with people. If you want to buy my book, great. If not, great. I just think you’re worth talking to. So stop by and see me on Twitter or on my blog. Especially in the Spring when I get to do the CSAR tournament (I love brackets, enough said, lol). But really, I want to know who you are. I write books about people who fall in love because I love stories. Yours, mine, Nora’s.

Have you ever had an interaction on Twitter/Facebook/Blog with an author that was really memorable for you? What do you remember about it? Did it make you more or less likely to Follow that person?

Please answer Camryn’s question above. Leave me your email address.

Tri-blog with Stephanie Julian Interview & Giveaway

LITERAL ADDICTION Paranormal Book Club, Book Monster Reviews and For the Love of Books are very happy to welcome Stephanie Julian to our sites today.
Stephanie is the author of the Magical Seduction, Lucani Lovers, and The Fringe series, as well as the new Forgotten Goddess series.

A former reporter for a daily newspaper, she enjoys making up stories much more than writing about real life, and is happily married to a Springsteen fanatic, with whom she shares two sons who love her even when they don’t have any clean clothes and dinner is a bowl of cereal.

Stephanie’s most current release, “Grace in Moonlight”, Lucani Lovers Book #5 was released on July 20, 2011 and has been eagerly anticipated by fans.

For those readers with us today that have not read Lucani Lovers, we thought we’d at least give you the synopsis of “Grace in Moonlight” to peak your interest:

Synopsis:
Kaisie Giliati is the lucani king’s best tracker. He’s used to hunting and capturing his prey with little resistance. He’s also old enough to know exactly what he wants, and the feisty redhead who stirs him like no other is at the top of his list. Too bad she’s the enemy and seemingly impervious to his charms.
Grace Bellasario has a target on her back, two children to protect from their evil father and she’s in love for the first time in her life. With a man who should hate her—a man she has no business craving. But does she ever. Grace doesn’t have a chance in hell of shaking Kaisie off her tail. Now he just needs to keep her alive to live happily ever after

Stephanie’s other current release, ”What a Goddess Wants”, Forgotten Goddess Book #1, was released on July 1st and has been hailed “Brutally vivid” with “Flaming hot passion that just leaps off the pages”.  Book #2 of the series, “How to Worship a Goddess” is due out on 12/1/2011, and we’re sure it will get similar praise.

Since this is the first book in a series, it deserves a little introduction as well.

Synopsis:

It’s OK no one remembers Etruscan Sun goddess Tessa. But when a demon threatens her life, she must turn to mythology’s darkest warrior for protection..

Caligo of the Cimmerians has never met a woman as warm, sunny and inviting as Tessa. Their sizzling mutual attraction quickly sweeps the two of them into a love story that’s worthy of the gods.

Since we have Stephanie with us on all 3 sites today, let’s get right to the heart of the Event and see what Stephanie had to say to us when we peppered her with questions.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews/For The Love of Books:  Hi Stephanie, thank you so much for joining us all today!  We can’t wait to learn a little bit more about you and your new series.
Stephanie: And I’m thrilled to be here.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews/For the Love of Books:  We usually start out our interviews learning a bit more about our Guest Author.

Q1):  Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out on the Internet?
Stephanie: My favorite running shoes are my new Adidas Marathons. Love them. I have a bright red cruising bike I compare to the Wicked Witch’s bike in The Wizard of Oz that I ride whenever I get the chance. And I’m an Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja addict. I spend way to much time killing pigs and chopping fruit.

Q2):  What is a typical writing day like for you?
Stephanie:I roll out of bed, stumble to my desk around 7 a.m., clean out my email and start to write around 8 a.m. I try to write at least 2,000 words a day, hopefully more, sometimes less. I try to spend most of it writing but I’m easily distracted. I run every other day so I have to work that in too. I try to write from 8 to 4, but I always spend some time talking to my guys when they get home from school.

Q3):  Did anyone or anything special inspire you to become an author?
Stephanie: I have always been a reader and that more than anything inspired me to be a writer. I wanted to tell stories and have readers fall in love with my characters. When I was in sixth grade, I found my mom’s copies of Kathleen Woodiwiss’ books. The Flame and the Flower and The Wolf and the Dove really got me into reading romance. Then I discovered Harlequin Presents and Bertrice Small and Rosemary Rogers and I never looked back.

Q4):  Was there any special inspiration behind the creation of the Forgotten Goddess series?
Stephanie: I was already writing books in my two Etruscans series, Magical Seduction and Lucani Lovers, and I’d already mentioned a few of the goddesses in some of those books, so I knew the gods and goddesses were hanging out on the periphery of the world. I got to thinking about what exactly these deities did now that they didn’t really have much to do in the world anymore. And that’s how the Forgotten Goddesses were born.

Q5):  Out of all of your series and books, is there one that you are particularly proud or fond of?  Why?
Stephanie: I love them all but I’m particularly proud of the way the Forgotten Goddesses series expands on my Etruscan world. I’ve got all these characters floating around and I’m very proud that I’ve been able to make all the themes and story lines fit.

Q6):  If you could sit down with 2 of your characters in a room full of readers, who would you want there, what question would you be sure to ask each of them, and how do you think they’d reply?
Stephanie: Cat would be one. She’s been a reader favorite since she showed up in Kiss of Moonlight. I would have to ask Cat how she sees Tivr, the Etruscan God of the Moon, fitting into her life. She would turn bright red, smile and deflect the question. The other would be Salvatorus, the salbinelli. Sal is an Etruscan satyr who’s been around for a really long time. I’d love to know how he got that New York accent but he’d probably tell me to do something anatomically inappropriate with that question.

Q7):  With Fantasy and Paranormal Romance being such popular genres these days, what intrigued you most about it, and how did you decide which ‘Super Group’ your characters would fall into?
Stephanie: I love that I’m able to create worlds within our world. I can play with magic and have fairies and elves and witches and werewolves. Since I based my books on an Etruscan mythology, there is some fact in almost everything I have in my books. The ancient Etruscans actually believed in magic and deities so I had to be faithful to some of that.

Q8):  Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
Stephanie: I love research. I love thousand-page books I get from Amazon about Etruscan religion and culture and art. I scour those books for the tidbits of information to use to give my stories flavor and then I let my imagination fly.

Q9): What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
Stephanie: I like to run and ride my bike and read. I read at least an hour a day, if not more. I love to spend time with my guys, my husband and two sons. And I love talking writing with my writing buddies.

Q10):  When did you first realize you wanted to become a writer?
Stephanie: It’s the only think I’ve ever really wanted to do. I think I was in elementary school, reading Little House on the Prairie, and I knew that writing was what I was going to do with my life. Luckily, after college, I got a job at a newspaper that allowed me to write for a living.

Q11): Since creating the Forgotten Goddesses series, how much research time do you put into this series?
Stephanie: Lots. I probably had at least a hundred hours in but I’ve been using this information through three series, about to be four.

Q12):  What is one of your fondest childhood memories?
Stephanie: Spending time with my mom at bookstores. Toys were something she’d usually say no to but she never said no to a book.

Q13):  When you sit down and begin to write, what are some of the things you MUST have with you for the process?
Stephanie:  My Junior Mints. I’m a self confessed addict. I have them on the desk to write with every day.

Q14):  If you could co-write a book with any other any other author who would it be and why?
Stephanie: Hmm. JR Ward comes to mind right away. I love her Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Nalini Singh would be another. Her Psy/Changeling series is amazing.

Q15):   Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Stephanie: Yes, for as a long as I can remember.

Q16):   Your thoughts on e-books vs. traditional paper books?
Stephanie: Personally, I never thought I would be an ebook reader but then I got a Nook Color and now the only paper I buy is for research. The convenience of ebooks is just impossible to beat.

Q17):  Do you feel that have learned anything from your characters?
Stephanie: Yes. I’ve learned that I can love a bad boy, even though he’s fictional.
Q18):  What upcoming release are you looking forward to reading the most?
Stephanie: Meljean Brook’s Heart of Steel. Cannot wait.
Q19):  This is another of our staple questions…  What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview but have never been asked?  How would you answer that question?
Stephanie: When is the Etruscan series going to end? Hopefully never!!!
Q20):  Is there anything specific you’d like to say to your readers and fans while we have you with us today?
Stephanie: Thanks so much for reading. And I want them to know I’m just as avid a reader as they are and I love to talk books. Please don’t be afraid to contact me on Facebook or Twitter. I always hang out there.
LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews/For The Love of Books:  Stephanie, thank you so much again for joining us today!  We’ve really enjoyed hosting this web Event for you and getting the word out about the new Forgotten Goddess series.
Stephanie: Thanks so much for having me. I’ve really enjoyed my time here today.

Drew in Blue by JM Kelley Review & Giveaway

Drew Doyle’s done a lot of stupid things in his life, but the biggest mistake by far was not paying attention to that 2% failure rate listed on the back of the condom box.

Drew in Blue is the story of a thirty-six year old loner unexpectedly saddled with the task of raising a baby while trying to sort out his mess of a life. Problem is, he just keeps making things worse for himself. It’s a running theme in Drew’s life, considering he never does anything the easy way. The River’s View, Pennsylvania gossip mill is watching each misstep as Drew juggles a price-gouging babysitter, a major case of artist’s block, and a best friend with an opinion to share on every bungled choice he makes.

His love life isn’t faring much better. Despite a long history of relationships that never really get off the ground, he falls head over heels for someone new, hoping that she might be the one to end his romantic bad luck streak. Things finally start looking up for Drew, until he finds out (the hard way, naturally) that this new love interest isn’t the one for him after all. Turns out, it’s actually lifelong pal, and high school girlfriend, Kristina Moser.

Drew’s feelings for Kris intensify as he witnesses her growing bond with his son, and he finally realizes where he belongs. Now all he has to do is convince Kris he’s right… and she’s just not buying it.

My thoughts:
In this story we go on a journey with Drew to find out who and what he really wants in his life.  Drew learns what true love is and that, that love maybe as close as the person who has always been there.
I really enjoyed this story.  Drew is like many people in a rut during life, but it only takes one little bundle in the form of a little boy to change everything for Drew. I did find Drew frustrating only in the fact that he is a man and can’t see what is right in front of his face.  But in the end I believe Drew learns the errors of his way.
I do hope the JM will revisit Drew in the future. I would love to know how things turned out for him.

If you want a good romance story please give Drew in Blue a try and find out if Drew can find what he needs.

I have to say a HUGE THANK YOU to JM for allowing me to read her book and share it with all of you.

Interview with Jacquelyn Frank and Giveaway

For the Love of Books is excited to welcome the Wonderful Jacquelyn Frank to the blog today.

A little more about Jacki:
Jacquelyn Frank is the New York Times bestselling author of Seduce Me in Dreams, the Nightwalkers series (Jacob, Gideon, Elijah, Damien, andNoah), the Shadowdwellers novels (Ecstasy, Rapture, and Pleasure), and the Gatherers novels (Hunting Julian and Stealing Katherine). She lives in North Carolina and has been writing romantic fiction ever since she picked up her first teen romance at age thirteen.

Jacki, Welcome to For the Love of Books.  Thank you so very much for taking time out of your very busy schedule to sit down with me and answer a few questions.

For the Love of Books:  Your newest book Seduce Me In Flames is book 2 in your Three World Series.  Please tell us a little about it.
Jacquelyn Frank: Seduce Me in Flames brings us back to the adventures of the Interplanetary Militia in the Three Worlds universe. Rush “Ender” Blakely is part of the ETF, an Extreme Tactics Force, that aids in policing these worlds, helps in keeping the peace and seeing that everyone lives a reasonably happy existence. But when the Emperor of Allay dies, and a culture threatens to unravel, Ender finds himself in an impossible situation. He is cut off from his team with traitors amongst him, he is forced to rely only on his ETF training and Tarian heritage to protect the princess from those who would see her killed. All the while he is hiding his own secret that once exposed could threaten all that he holds dear.

FLB: How did you come up with the idea for the Three World Series?
JFIt may sound ironic, but I came up with the idea for Seduce me in Dreams from a dream.  I saw a very powerful military man on a cold space platform having a vision of a woman that would somehow be his destiny. When I woke up, I started to write commander Bronse Chapel’s story. His team followed and then the adventure began! That’s how the Three Worlds Series came to life.

FLB: When did you know you wanted to become a writer?
JF: Well, the bug first bit me when I was a teenager. 13 years old. I hated the lameness of the teen romances of the time and set out to do a better job.

FLB: Some writers have writing rituals.  What are some of your rituals?
JF: I wouldn’t say that I have any kind of a ritual per say. But I do need a certain type of environment to get any work done. I can’t write if there are distractions in the house and I have to have my MUSIC!  I make up a playlist for every new book depending on what I need to motivate me.

FLB: Let’s talk Adam for a minute.  Adam is book 6 in your Nightwalker series and can I say I can’t wait to read it.  I know you get asked this a lot.  Is Adam the last in this series or do you have more Nightwalker books planned?
JFThat is the Million Dollar Question, my dear. I could tell you but then I’d have to kill you. 😛

FLB: One more burning question about your series.  Are there plans for more JAX books?
JF: Last I heard, yep! Working on one now. Of course, anything and everything can and will change in the publishing world, so I make no promises!

FLB: What are you currently working on?  Anything you want to share about?
JF: I am currently working on a JAX title. I think. LOL! If this works out it will be a follow up to The Phoenix Project from the NOCTURNAL anthology. But refer to my caveat in the previous question!

FLB: What is the best piece of advice you have received about becoming a writer?
JF: Don’t read your own reviews!

FLB: This is a real simple question.  How are the kittens?
JF: The Kittens are great! They are 14 weeks old now and into everything but mommy loves them. I have recently rescued 4 more feral kittens that I plan to take care of till they are ready to be adopted.

FLB:  Thank you, Jacquelyn again for letting me take up some of your time, I know that you are hard at work on your next novel. Also a Huge Thank you to Natalie for helping me coordinate all of this.

So Jacquelyn what do you say about giving away a copy of your newest release Seduce Me In Flames to one of the commenter’s?
JF: Yes, absolutely as soon as I get them.

Giveaway Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are we giving away?  Well, Seduce Me In Flames of course……

My thoughts:

First I want to thank Devyn for sending me Darkness Descending for early review.  And no I am not just being nice Devyn when I say “Darkness Descending SO DOESN’T suck!!!!”

Next, I was sucked into this book just by reading the prologue. Therefore I would like to share it with you:

Enjoy:

Prologue
This is a tale that has been told time and time again; the battle of good versus evil, light versus dark.
There are as many versions as there are stars in the sky.
And it’s all true.
The story, however, is only halftold.
Thousands of years ago, one of the most favored archangels challenged the highest power of heaven.
Jealous of the freedom accorded to newly created humans, he demanded free will for all angels. The
confrontation fractured heaven, creating a legion of upstarts. But far from denying them, heaven granted
these angels what they so desired.
But the gift came at a terrible price. Almost immediately, the angels felt a dark presence, born of
greed, stir within. Fear rippled throughout the ranks, but it was too late to beg forgiveness. For their
blasphemy, their bodies were torn asunder and reborn in fire, the blood in their veins cursed for all time.
Their wings were torn from their monstrous bodies, and they took on the look of beasts.
The accursed beings were cast out of heaven, made to wander Earth for all time. Humans were given
the sanctuary of Eden to protect them from the encroaching evil, but free will once again proved to be
both blessing and curse, and they began to travel far and wide beyond the haven. Eventually, Eden
became no more than a mirage, its location lost in the sands of time.
The fallen angels quickly discovered men, and it was then that they felt the first pull of bloodlust. The
seeds of their revenge were sown, and they fed upon humans, integrating themselves into society.
Vampirism spread slowly, giving foul birth to a demon race that called itself the Telave.
Eden is now lost, and no place on Earth offers shelter as those of the Telave continue to build their
army of undead soldiers, biding their time to wage war on heaven and Earth. They move virtually
undetected, cloaked in the shadowy mantle of human ignorance and denial.
But heaven has not forsaken the weak and defenseless. The most faithful of angels were sent to mate
with human females, giving rise to a race of holy warriors strong enough to withstand the unholy invasion
of the vampiric virus.
However, the warriors are spread thin as the demonic plague escalates. Their victories are few; the
casualties many.
A savior to lead them has long been promised.
But the centuries have passed, and no savior has arrived . . .
When she does, the fate of the world will rest in her hands.

Darkness Descending is the first book in Devyn’s Vampire Armageddon series. In Darkness Descending we meet Jesse (our heroine) she has been through hell in the last year.  Being attacked by demons, losing her sister, being arrested and as if things couldn’t get worse she is hanging out in a cemetery.  Jesse is waiting to take her revenge on the monsters that attacked her and killed her sister.  As with everything else in the past year her attack plan only leave her getting attaché again.  But this time she won’t go down without a fight.
The last thing Maddox expected to this night at the cemetery was a young girl trying to kill a freshly turned vampire.  But doing his job he takes out the vampire and saves the young woman.  But this young woman is not what she seems to be. Maddox takes Jesse under his wing in hope to teach her how to protect herself while fighting vampires.  But while helping Jesse, Maddox has to face down his own demons and the growing feelings he has for Jesse.  But this time Maddox may have waited too long.

I LOVED this story!!!! Devyn sucked me in from the beginning of the prologue.  I hate to say that I love see characters struggle, but I do. And boy do these characters struggle.  Each of these characters have demons they have to face.  Choices to make.  Destiny’s to fulfill.

I really can’t wait to see where Devyn takes us next with Maddox, Jesse and crew.
