When people ask me where I got the idea for Snow White Red-Handed, I’m not sure where to start.  I can say with certainty, however, that the entire Fairy Tale Fatal series began as a self-indulgent, irresponsible project.

Yes.  Call it Escape from Academic Drudgery.  Charge me as guilty for writing an entire novel as a way to procrastinate on my homework.

This is what happened: I’ve always been fascinated with fairy tales, so when I had the chance to pick my texts for a freshman comp class I was teaching, I decided to use fairy tales and fairy tale criticism as a way to help my students learn to write about literature.  So I had fairy tales on the brain, big time.  The next thing I knew, the fairy tale stuff had cross-pollinated in the back of my mind with the nineteenth-century American literature texts I was reading in preparation for my PhD qualifying exams.  Louisa May Alcott, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Walt Whitman . . . yeah.  How the heck does that crowd mix with fairy tales?  But the more I thought about it, the more excited I got.  I’ve always loved stories with outsider protagonists, and a Yankee girl in the Black Forest sounded like a book I wanted to read.  So I decided to write it.  Kind of for fun.  And as a way to procrastinate on grading student papers and chewing through that pesky PhD reading list.

Once I got started writing and researching Snow White Red-Handed, other things worked their way into the story.  Some of them are personal.  For instance, my heroine Ophelia Flax is a variety hall actress, and one of my great-grandmothers was a singer on the variety hall stage.

Other personal ingredients are the Baden-Baden and Heidelberg settings.  When I was in college, I spent two summers in Heidelberg working as an orchestral violinist in Heidelberg’s Castle Festival, and I traveled a couple of times to Baden-Baden on my days off.

Baden-Baden has a simply amazing thermal spa, by the way, if you aren’t averse to getting whacked on the rear after your scrubbing has been completed by a muscly attendant.  Seriously.   I was enchanted by the area, and it evidently left its mark on my imagination.  I even have a recurring dream of hiking to a castle inhabited by elves, hidden on a mountain above Heidelberg.  There is a story to that, and no, it doesn’t involve a psychotherapist.  Although maybe it should.

Another personal inspiration: I’ve always had a secret crush on the composer Johannes Brahms, and Brahms spent a lot of time in Baden-Baden.  In fact, even though the hero of Snow White Red-Handed, Professor Penrose, is British, I picture him like the young Brahms, plus spectacles.

Okay, so I had this amazing setting that I’d always been in love with, a hero who looks like the young Brahms, and the fruitfully absurd concept of a practical Yankee variety hall actress who finds herself in the patently impractical land of German fairy tales.  Add a castle, a murder, and a cast of shifty characters, plus a hapless friend for Ophelia by the name of Prue, and off I went.

There were times, I’ll admit, when writing Snow White Red-Handed seemed like a lot more work than just doing my homework and grading my students’ papers, by golly.  The historical research was time consuming, though once I found Mark Twain’s two travelogues The Innocents Abroad and A Tramp Abroad, things got smoother.  Getting my characters’ speech to sound historical without confusing twenty-first century readers was also tricky (fingers crossed that I pulled it off).  Oh, and then there was the little issue called the mystery plot.  Tangled, indeed.

In the end, though, Snow White Red-Handed almost miraculously turned out as that book I’d wanted to read: an unexpected, frivolous, magical, adventurous, and romantic romp.  I am so delighted that Berkley Prime Crime picked up my Fairy Tale Fatal series, and I hope readers will enjoy escaping into the mysterious woods of the nineteenth century as much as I did.

She is the author of the Fairy Tale Fatal and The Discreet Retrieval Agency series, and her first mystery, Snow White Red-Handed, will be released in November 2014 by Berkley Prime Crime.

This means that the exploits of Fairy Tale Fatal’s heroine, variety hall actress Ophelia Flax, were dreamt up while Maia was purportedly researching 19th-century American literature and fairy tale criticism. Miss Ophelia Flax is a Victorian actress who knows all about making quick changes and even quicker exits. But to solve a fairy-tale crime in the haunted Black Forest, she’ll need more than a bit of charm…

1867: After being fired from her latest variety hall engagement, Ophelia acts her way into a lady’s maid position for a crass American millionaire. But when her new job whisks her off to a foreboding castle straight out of a Grimm tale, she begins to wonder if her fast-talking ways might have been too hasty. The vast grounds contain the suspected remains of Snow White’s cottage, along with a disturbing dwarf skeleton. And when her millionaire boss turns up dead—poisoned by an apple—the fantastic setting turns into a once upon a crime scene.

To keep from rising to the top of the suspect list, Ophelia fights through a bramble of elegant lies, sinister folklore, and priceless treasure, with only a dashing but mysterious scholar as her ally. And as the clock ticks towards midnight, she’ll have to break a cunning killer’s spell before her own time runs out…

Jennifer’s Review of Snow White Red-Handed

Review (3.5 Stars):  Miss Ophelia Flax has lost her job as an actress but quickly pretends to be a maid to secure a position with an American family. On arrival to her new employer’s home, they discover a miniature castle on the property with what appears to be dwarf-like remains.  Before they have a chance to truly evaluate the situation, Ophelia’s new employer ends up dead as a result of a poisoned apple with Ophelia’s best friend as the prime suspect.  Now, Ophelia must find the clues with the help of a handsome young professor to save her friend from a not so happy ending.

This series shows a lot of promise and I loved the idea of weaving Grimm fairy tales throughout the murder mystery. Ophelia was a smart and entertaining character and I loved how resourceful she was in trying to protect the well-being of her best friend.  I loved the historical aspect of this mystery and I’m looking forward to seeing where Ophelia’s relationship with Professor Penrose goes in the next book.  Interesting start of a new series and I have high hopes for the next book, Cinderella Six Feet Under.

ON BORROWED TIME

By Jenn McKinlay

Sometimes I feel desperately guilty.  ON BORROWED TIME is the fifth book in the Library Lover’s mysteries and in her quest for the truth, my amateur sleuth, library director Lindsey Norris has been close to death numerous times not the least of which were being frozen and blown up.  How can I not feel guilty for subjecting her to such horrific events?

Then again, if she wasn’t such a curious sort, the mysteries would never happen, she’d just turn things over to the police and that would be that.  The thing is, I used to be a librarian and by and large we are a terminally nosy bunch.  Our entire life’s work is based on ferreting out information, anything from obscure Shakespeare quotes to why the rabbit’s foot is considered lucky to how to start a small business, so naturally if a murder were to happen in our midst we would feel compelled to solve it.

For balance, I try to give my characters something positive in their life.  In Lindsey’s case she has a close group of friends, a crafternoon group, with whom she shares food, a favorite book and a craft.  She also has a dog named Heathcliif who was found abandoned in the library book drop but has become her loyal companion.  And lastly, she has the potential for a real romance in her life, assuming the man she is interested in can prove to her that he can handle a relationship.

This assuages some of the guilt but not all of it.  When a character rattles around in your head for a few years, you get attached.  I never thought it was possible but go through a few murders together and the bond is strong.  I would like nothing more than to marry off my characters and let them ride off into the sunset without a care, but life doesn’t really work that way, does it?  There is always a mix of good and evil, right and wrong, happy and sad.  Besides if there were no more crimes there would be no more books and then I’d really miss my ladies.

In ON BORROWED TIME, available on Nov 4th, I really put Lindsey through the wringer.  Yes, more guilt but I think the story was worth it and I hope you do, too.  Here’s a snippet of the book so you can see what I mean:

Loving a good cup of coffee runs in the family for Briar Creek library director Lindsey Norris. But when her brother, Jack, a consultant for a coffee company, goes missing, her favorite beverage becomes a key clue in a dangerous mystery.

Between preparing the library for the holidays and juggling the affections of ex-boyfriend, Captain Mike Sullivan, and her new crush, actor Robbie Vine, Lindsey has her hands full. But the mysterious disappearance of her world-traveling playboy brother takes precedence over all.

Afraid that involving the police could brew trouble for Jack, Lindsey takes matters into her own hands. But as her quest for her brother embroils her in a strange case involving South American business dealings and an enigmatic and exotic woman, it’ll take the help of both her library book club—the crafternooners—and her eager-to-please suitors to keep Jack from ending up in hot water…

I hope you enjoy reading ON BORROWED TIME as much as I enjoyed writing it.  For more information about me or my books, you can go to my website www.jennmckinlay.com or find me on Facebook or Twitter.

Happy Reading!

Jennifer’s Review of On Borrowed Time

Review (4 Stars): I love small town mysteries and the Library Lover’s mystery series is one of my favorites.  Lindsey and her staff are preparing for the holidays when she gets an welcome yet unexpected visitor, which she knows is a sure sign of trouble.  Lindsey’s brother, Jack, appears on the doorstep of the library and before Lindsey can find out why he is there, a dead body is found and her brother mysteriously disappears.  To find answers and hopefully clear her brother’s name, Lindsey searches for clues and finds that her brother is involved in something that could put them all in jeopardy.

On Borrowed Time was a thrill-ride of a mystery that is perfect for fans of the series.  I adore Lindsey and her character is always fun to spend time with.  Each book gets more entertaining than the last and I loved the international aspect of this story, which kept the mystery engaging and fresh.  Such a charming series and I can’t wait to see what these characters will be up to next.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Suede to Rest by Diane Vallere

Guest Post

by Diane Vallere

I have fond memories of playing in fabric stores when I was young. My mom is an excellent seamstress, and often took my sister and me on trips to Levine’s, our local fabric store, to pick out patterns for new dresses, curtains, pillows, or pajamas. She’d drop me by the tables of pattern books where I’d spend hours flipping through the pages, admiring the fashionable sketches and dreaming of the possibilities. As I got older, I would wander the aisles and pick out interesting prints for clothes that I made myself.

Fabric stores are like bookstores to me. I can’t walk into one and not come out with a package. There are no better places to fritter away time! So when the idea of a cozy mystery series set in a fabric shop came to mind, I knew it was the perfect way to combine two passions. I imagined an old fabric store like the one I used to play in, one that had been around since the fifties. What treasures might be hidden inside: dusty vintage fabrics in a stockroom, new old stock of buttons, pattern books from decades past, forgotten packages of bias tape, or thick bolts of polyester double knit? Or maybe a hint of an unsolved mystery?

SUEDE TO REST, the first book in the Material Witness Mystery Series, opens with Polyester Monroe (so named because she was born inside of the store, on a bed of polyester!) standing in front of the fabric store that she’s inherited. What should be a simple transaction involving her signature on a couple of documents gets complicated when Poly decides to go inside and experience the world where she grew up one last time. She doesn’t expect to feel so connected to the store, especially since she doesn’t feel nearly that connected to the job she holds in Los Angeles. She also doesn’t expect to find a dead body in the parking lot the day after she arrives. It seems Poly  has a choice: stay in San Ladrón and learn the truth about the small town’s secrets, or sign away her ownership of the store and go back to life as she knows it.

I sometimes think there is a part of all of us that wants a chance to get away from our everyday life. Inheriting the fabric store is a wakeup call for Poly. It throws her life into disarray and makes her think about whether or not her life is headed the right direction—and question what exactly is the “right” direction for her.  Not that long ago, I had my own wakeup call and asked myself the same questions. That’s when I changed career paths and moved from Texas to California (where SUEDE TO REST is set). The move was scary–especially for someone who likes to plan everything! I could have stayed where I was, and I could have moved back to Pennsylvania, where I’m from. Instead, I chose the unknown door number three. The move brought new opportunities to my life and, while I haven’t had to contend with any dead bodies, I did think a lot about that somewhat spontaneous decision when writing Poly’s story. So far, things have worked out pretty well for me.

I wonder how they’ll turn out for Poly?

With her career as a dress designer in shreds, Polyester Monroe is looking forward to a fresh start. But as it all unfolds, the pattern to a new beginning looks a lot like murder.

When Poly Monroe was little, she loved playing in her family’s textile store. But after a fatal family tragedy, Land of A Thousand Fabrics was boarded up and Poly never expected to see the inside again. Now, as inheritor of the long-shuttered shop, she’s ready to restore the family business.

However her two new kittens, Pins and Needles, aren’t the ones causing a snag in her plans…

Not everyone wants Poly back in San Ladrón, especially a powerful local developer pressuring her to sell—and leave town fast. But even when the threats turn deadly, she’s not ready to bolt. Because Poly is beginning to suspect that the murder behind the shop is tied to a mystery in her family’s unsettled past that she’s determined to solve before her own life is left hanging by a thread.

Jennifer’s Review of Suede to Rest

Review (4 Stars): This book was a perfect combination of great characters, a thought-provoking mystery, a strong heroine and two adorable kittens, which made this an enjoyable read for me.  Poly found herself involved in a mystery as soon as she set foot in her family’s business and someone desperately wanted her to sell the business and leave town.  She quickly had to figure out who was behind all this before she became another victim on this killer’s list.

Poly was an interesting character who loved fabrics just as much as her family did and saw that this was more of an opportunity to do what she wanted instead of going back to the boring dead end job that she left behind. I loved the writing style of Ms. Vallere and couldn’t wait to see what happened next to Poly while she was visiting San Ladrón. I also liked meeting the secondary characters especially the members of the senior patrol and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens to Poly in the next book.

Jennifer’s Review of Literally Murder

Review (4 Stars):  I love “little” Hamlet and I think that he is the most adorable kitty around.  In Literally Murder, Hamlet has become an internet sensation with his “Karate Kitty” video and has been invited to be the guest of honor at the Feline Society of America cat show in Florida.  Darla jumps at the chance for some fun in the sun while renovations are taking place back home in her bookstore.  Upon arriving in Florida, Darla realizes that this cat show may have been more than she bargained for and one of contestant’s owner is found dead with Hamlet right by his side. The charming duo must now find a murderer before their dream vacation turns into a nightmare.

This is such a great mystery series and I love spending time with Darla and Hamlet.  Literally Murder was an entertaining thrill-ride that will charm even the grumpiest of cats.  The mystery was fun, exciting and definitely full of plot twists and turns.  I can’t wait to read the next book in the series and see what kind of mischief Hamlet gets into next.

Jennifer’s Review of One Potion in the Grave
Review (4.5 Stars): This is the second book in the Magic Potion Mystery series and these books keep getting better and better.  Carly Hartwell runs a magic potion shop in Hitching Post, Alabama and in this book, the whole town is preparing for the elaborate wedding of a Senator’s son.  Carly finds out that old friends are also in town for this prestigious ceremony and before the nuptials are to take place, Carly’s friend is found dead behind the wedding chapel.  Carly must find the killer before it is too late and more victims are found to prevent this killer’s secrets from coming to light.

This is such a cute and fun mystery series.  Carly is such a spunky character and I love spending time with her and her family.  There is so much humor and crazy antics from these characters that you can’t help laughing out loud while your reading this delightful story.  The mystery was well-written and I was desperately trying to figure out the clues to determine who killed Carly’s friend right along with everyone else.  Enjoyable read but I recommend that everyone read A Potion to Die For first so you really get to know these characters from the very beginning.

Jennifer’s Review of Off Kilter

Review (4.5 Stars): I loved the rich character of the lush Scottish Highlands in Off Kilter and I wanted desperately to join Eden on her journey of self-discovery in Scotland. Eden Elliott sets off on a trip of a lifetime to the lovely town of Glenkillen to finally write her romance novel, making a fresh start after the death of her mother and the end of her marriage.  She never expected to meet anyone but after a comedy of errors, Eden finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery.  The primary suspect happens to be the one friend that Eden has in this little village and she is now on the hunt for a killer before her dreams of a new life go up in smoke.

Eden was sweet, caring and a little quirky at times but that is the reason why I liked her.  I think we all have had a time in our lives where things feel like they are falling apart and we want a chance to make a new start especially if that opportunity just happens to be a trip to the beautiful Scottish Highlands.  I loved meeting the residents of Glenkillen and learning the traditions of being in Scotland, which makes me want to plan a trip right now.  I could also definitely hear the accent of the sexy Leith in my head and I was glad to see that Eden has a possible love interest in this series.  Great start of a series and I will be adding this author on to my list of books that I have to pre-order before they come out.

Jennifer’s Review of A Midwinter’s Tail

Review (4.5 Stars):  I love Hercules and Owen and they happen to be two of my favorite literary cats around. I have been a big fan of this series ever since I read Curiosity Thrilled the Cat and was first introduced to these lovely animals and their sweet owner, Kathleen Paulson. In A Midwinter’s Tail, Kathleen is organizing a fundraiser at the library to benefit her popular children’s program, Reading Buddies.  During the festivities, a guest drops dead as a result of an allergic reaction to one of the delicious treats and now Kathleen and her magical kitties need to help solve the case to help clear a friend’s name.

I loved this mystery from beginning to end.  I love the fact that Kathleen is the town librarian and I have always found it entertaining being able to spend time with her during the course of her day-to-day activities. A Midwinter’s Tail is a delightful addition to an already magical series that I hope will continue for many years to come.  I adore Hercules and Owen’s entertaining antics and the mystery had me guessing until the very end. Looking forward to reading the next book in this fun series.

In all he has co-authored or co-edited six works of mystery reference and one short story anthology. With Elizabeth Foxwell he wrote The Robert B. Parker Companion (Berkley; 200).

His first novel, Cruel as the Grave (Silver Dagger Mysteries) was published in 2000. Since then he has published eighteen more novels, writing under his own name and the pseudonyms Jimmie Ruth Evans and Honor Hartman. In August 2010 he launched a new series writing as Miranda James. The first book under this name, Murder Past Due (Berkley Prime Crime; $7.99) spent four weeks on the extended New York Times bestseller list for mass market paperbacks. The next book in the series, Classified as Murder (Berkley Prime Crime; $7.99), published in May 2011, also hit the NYT list. The third book, File M for Murder (Berkley Prime Crime; $7.99) is out now. The fourth book, Out of Circulation (Berkley Prime Crime; $7.99) debuted at no. 11 on the bestseller list. Book five, The Silence of the Library (Berkley Prime Crime; $7.99) is just out, and there are more books to come in the series.

Dean lives with two young cats, thousands of books, and thinks frequently about killing people – but only in the pages of fiction.

Jennifer’s Review of Bless Her Dead Little Heart

Review (4 Stars): I was very excited when I learned that Miranda James was starting a new series with the characters from The Cat in the Stacks mystery series.  The adorable Diesel is sent to stay with An’gel and Dickce Ducote in this story while Charlie is out of town and immediately becomes involved in another murder mystery.  Rosabelle Sultan, the over-dramatic sorority sister of the elderly Ducote sisters, makes a surprise visit to the ladies and tells them that her family is trying to kill her.  Shortly after, Rosabelle’s entire family appears at their doorstep, intent on determining why their elderly mother left in the middle of the night.  Before too long, a dead body is discovered and it is up to the sisters to sort out the family drama and find the identity of the true killer before they claim another victim.

This is a great start to a series and I was enchanted by the elderly Ducote sisters. Their personality and spunk made this an absolute delight to read and I was amazed that they were able to put up with Rosabelle’s family as long as they did.  They would have driven me crazy and I would have been arrested for murder.  Such a rude and privileged family imposing on the sisters the way that they did.  Miranda James is a relatively new author to me but not for long, since I’ve only read Out of Circulation.  I fell in love with Diesel and can’t wait to read more about him in The Cat in the Stacks series and spend more time getting to know his owner, Charlie.  Bless Her Dead Little Heart was a fun cozy mystery that will have you delighted with its southern sassy charm.  I’m looking forward to reading more about the Ducote sisters and spending time again with their southern hospitality in future books of the series.

Jennifer’s Review of Lost Under A Ladder

Review (4 Stars): This was a very cute mystery and I loved the idea of a town where superstitions are commonplace and a staple among the community. Rory Chasen has come to the town of Destiny to find closure in the death of her fiance, who happened to be killed after walking under a ladder.  When she first arrives in Destiny, she meets Martha, the owner of Lucky Dog Boutique,  after Pluckie helps save her life and finds that she may be staying in town longer than expected.  Soon Martha is suspected in the murder of a local bookstore owner and it is up to Rory to try to find the real killer before it is too late.

I really enjoyed this mystery and I liked getting to know Rory and her dog, Pluckie.  The premise of a town that focuses on superstitions was very interesting and I found myself trying to remember if I had heard certain superstitions before.  The mystery was well-written and engaging and I’m looking forward to spending more time with the residents of Destiny in future books.  I love Ms. Johnston’s books and Lost Under A Ladder is a great start to what will be a very charming series.

Blog Tour & Review: Stirring The Plot by Daryl Wood Gerber

stirring the plot large banner 640

Today I have the lovely Daryl Wood Gerber here on Books-n-Kisses to share a yummy recipe for her new book, Stirring The Plot.  It sounds so delicious and I can’t wait to try it out myself. 🙂  Take it away, Daryl.

I write the Cookbook Nook and Cheese Shop mysteries. In both, I include recipes. Who knew when I started writing mysteries that I’d also have to cook? Luckily, I like to cook. And eat.

In the Cookbook Nook series, my protagonist Jenna isn’t much of a cook. But she, like me, loves to eat. Throughout the series, she is learning to cook. In FINAL SENTENCE, she starts out with five-ingredient recipes. If she can dump all the ingredients into one bowl, all the better. By the third in the series, STIRRING THE PLOT, the book that’s coming out September 30, Jenna is up to ten ingredients and more complicated steps. She even makes candy!

Anyway, for Jenna, and for my fans, I like to come up with easy recipes. Now, this one doesn’t look easy because of all the ingredients and steps, and it might give Jenna the heebie-jeebies, but it is pretty easy. It’s your basic “cook all the stuff” and “assemble.” In honor of my Cheese Shop mysteries, this contains, you guessed it, cheese.

It also includes kale, what many pundits are calling the “good for you” or “super” food. Now, I am not big on eating kale “raw.” It’s a little hard to chew. Truly. Hard. Crunchy. And not in the fun way like a potato chip. But when cooked in a lasagna, it’s delish. You could probably substitute spinach if you’re not a kale fan. But try it. I think you’ll like it.

Enjoy!

KALE CHICKEN LASAGNA
(serves 6-8)

FOR THE SAUCE
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 ½ pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs
1 small sweet onion, choppedIMG_4568
3 cloves garlic, chopped
3 tablespoons tomato paste
½ cup chardonnay (white wine)
1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
3 bay leaves
¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground pepper

FOR THE LASAGNA
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 pound lasagna noodles
(*real; not no-boil) (gluten-free okay)
Extra-virgin olive oil for drizzling
2 cups kale, stems removed
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
30 ounces part-skim ricotta cheese
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup MORE chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon ground pepper
4 cups grated Mozzarella cheese (about 1 lb)
2 cups grated Asiago cheese

Directions:

To make the sauce:
Heat the olive oil in a large (and I mean large) skillet over medium heat; add the chicken and cook until browned. Turn every minute, for 5 minutes.

Add the chopped onion, chopped garlic, and tomato paste. Cook, stirring, until the onions soften, about 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook until the wine evaporates, about 5 minutes. Stir in 3 cups water, crushed tomatoes, bay leaves, and parsley. Add 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer 50 minutes. Using a spoon, break up the chicken. Cook another 20 minutes, until thickened. Remove the bay leaves.

Meanwhile:

Prepare the lasagna according to the package. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the noodles and cook (about half what the label directs). Drain the noodles and drizzle with olive oil; set aside.

Meanwhile:

Place the kale in a large microwave-safe bowl. Add ½ cup water and ¼ teaspoon salt. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave until tender, about 3 minutes on high. Drain and rinse under cold water. Press out all the excess water. Stir in the eggs, ricotta, ¼ cup of the Parmesan cheese, and the extra chopped parsley. Add 1 teaspoon salt and 4-5 grinds of the pepper.

In a separate bowl, toss the Mozzarella, Asiago, and the remaining Parmesan.

Turn on oven to 350 degrees F.

Spread 3/4 cup of the sauce in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Top with 1/3 of the noodles. Overlap, layering long ones first and then short ones crosswise. Cover with half of the kale-ricotta mixture. Then 2 more cups sauce. Cover with half of the Mozzarella cheese mixture.
Repeat the layers (noodles, kale-ricotta mixture, sauce, cheese).

Set on a baking sheet. (This will bubble over.)

Loosely cover with foil (you don’t want the foil to stick to the cheese). Bake 40 minutes, then uncover and bake another 25 minutes. You might want to raise heat to 400 degrees F.

Let stand 30 minutes before serving.

Great reheated the next day. One hour at 300 degrees F.

Jennifer’s Review of Stirring The Plot

Review (4 Stars): Stirring The Plot is the third title in the deliciously charming Cookbook Nook mystery series and I love spending time with the entertaining residents of Crystal Cove.  Halloween is quickly approaching and Jenna is gearing to participate in the festivities put on by the Winsome Witches, a group of ladies who turn the spooky holidays into a fundraising event each year.  Pearl Thornton, a therapist and the high priestess of the Winsome Witches, turns up dead in her home and Jenna’s aunt becomes the number one suspect in the murder.  Jenna can’t believe that her Aunt Vera is involved but Vera starts acting strangely and it is up to Jenna to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Stirring The Plot is a fun, charming holiday mystery that will keep you guessing.  With the well-written plot twists, cookbook recommendations and descriptions of delicious food, this series will be a winner for all mystery lovers.  For me, I love Jenna and the quirky characters of Crystal Cove and look forward to spending more time with them with each new release of the series.  I enjoyed the Halloween ideas sprinkled throughout this story and learning which cookbooks Jenna favored this holiday season for her store. I will definitely be picking up a few of the cookbooks that were mentioned in Stirring The Plot because everything described made me hungry while reading this book. I can’t wait to read more from Ms. Gerber and see what happens next to Jenna and the residents of Crystal Cove.

WEDDING SOUP MURDER

 by Rosie Genova

When I conceived of the idea for a mystery series set in an Italian restaurant, it felt entirely natural to place that restaurant at the Jersey shore, in the fictional town of Oceanside Park. There’s a long tradition of Italian cuisine in New Jersey, from boardwalk stands to upscale restaurants. The setting of the books, the Casa Lido restaurant (which literally means “beach house”) is a family-owned establishment presided over by the tight-knit Rienzi family: Nonna, the matriarch and iron-handed manager; her son Frank, the easygoing host; his wife Nicolina, who keeps the accounts, and their daughter Victoria, my main character. It’s the kind of place that serves rustic, seasonal food in a wood-paneled dining room with red and white checked tablecloths—the kind of place that people go back to, season after season.

In fact, most shore restaurants rely on strong summer business to keep them going throughout the year. In the first Italian Kitchen Mystery, Murder and Marinara, the Casa Lido’s livelihood is threatened when Victoria discovers the corpse of an unpopular television producer in her grandmother’s tomato garden. Since the dead man ate his last meal there, the restaurant suddenly loses its customers, inspiring Vic to use her sleuthing skills to solve the murder in time for the start of the summer season. The book also contains recipes of dishes served in the restaurant, including the marinara sauce in the title. (If you make it once, you’ll never open a jar again!)

In The Wedding Soup Murder, Vic is called upon to help cater the soup course at a wedding reception being held at the upscale Belmont Country Club. Her first job, assigned by her ornery Nonna, is to make a thousand tiny meatballs for the soup! At the reception, she and her ex-boyfriend Tim, now the sous chef at Casa Lido, have to prepare the soup on site at the Belmont. While there, they run afoul of a testy pastry chef, a spoiled bride, and the club’s president, Elizabeth Merriman. When Elizabeth’s body shows up on the beach the next day and a family friend comes under suspicion, Vic reluctantly takes on the case. The soup in the title is made with a meatball recipe that was passed down to me by my mom and grandmother, and if I do say so myself, they are very tasty.

I hope that the Italian Kitchen Mysteries portray the Jersey shore that I love—a place with a long and proud history, beautiful beaches, miles of boardwalk fun, and of course, good Italian food!

About the Author:

rosie genova picA Jersey girl born and bred, national bestselling author Rosie Genova left her heart at the shore, which serves as the setting for much of her work. The atmosphere of the Jersey shore is present in the details, whether it’s the smell of the sea, the sound of a Springsteen song, or the taste of Kohr’s custard from the boardwalk. And no summer is complete unless she has sand in her shoes.

A bookworm from the time she could sound out words, Rosie spent many happy hours in her home town library where she hid behind the stacks reading the titles she was too young to check out. She earned two degrees in English from Rutgers University, where she discovered to her delight that reading Jane Austen was actually considered homework. Though she’s always considered herself a writer, she didn’t pen her first novel until ten years ago, and she hasn’t stopped since.

Her series, the Italian Kitchen Mysteries, is informed by her deep appreciation for good food, her pride in her heritage, and her love of classic mysteries, from Nancy Drew to Miss Marple. Her debut novel, Murder and Marinara, was named a Best Cozy of 2013 by Suspense Magazine and was a finalist for a 2014 Daphne Du Maurier Award. An English teacher by day and novelist by night, Rosie also writes women’s fiction as Rosemary DiBattista. She still lives in her home state with her husband and her youngest son.

As she researches her family history, however, she is distracted by her attraction to two men, old flame and chef Tim Trouvare, and woodworker Cal Lockhart. And life gets more complicated when her grandmother puts her in charge of catering a wedding reception with a menu featuring the Casa Lido’s famous Italian Wedding Soup.

Held at the exclusive Belmont Country Club, a historic site that overlooks the ocean, the reception is presided over by the wealthy and snobbish Elizabeth Merriman, the events manager and Nonna’s long-time nemesis. At the reception, a harried Vic has to deal with a demanding bridezilla and her wealthy daddy, as well a number of clashes in the kitchen—between the staff and servers, between two egocentric head chefs, and between Elizabeth Merriman and everyone.

The wedding reception is ultimately a success, but by the time the happy couple and their guests depart, Elizabeth is missing. When her body is found on the beach the next morning, it appears that Elizabeth slipped from the top of the high seawall, but Vic isn’t convinced. Did Elizabeth Merriman finally push someone too far? And did that someone push her right back over the railing and onto the sand below?

Jennifer’s Review of The Wedding Soup Murder

Review (4.75 Stars): I love, love, love this series! Culinary mysteries are my absolute favorite and this book has everything.  Great writing, fun cast of characters and wonderful descriptions of food that will make you hungry for more.  The Wedding Soup Murder has Vic and her family’s restaurant helping to cater a prestigious wedding at the exclusive Belmont Country Club.  Vic and Tim are “chosen” by Nonna to prepare and serve Nonna’s famous wedding soup to the guests as a special favor to the bride’s family.  While working the event at the Belmont, Vic meets Elizabeth Merriman, who just happens to be the events manager and makes it known that she is not a big fan of the Caso Lido.  Everything goes off without a hitch, but Elizabeth is found dead on the beach the very next morning. What Vic soon discovers is that Elizabeth had a long list of enemies that would love to see her dead, but who would be capable of actually pushing her over the railing?  Vic is involved in yet another murder mystery and needs to find the killer before they decide to add another victim to their list.

I absolutely love this series and I have fallen in love with Vic and her big Italian family.  Each of these characters are very entertaining and I look forward with each book to spending time with these lovely people.  The Wedding Soup Murder was a fun, fast-paced mystery and I loved every minute of it.  Makes me want to head  to Caso Lido, have a glass wine and spend an evening chatting with Vic and her family.  This is the second book in the Italian Kitchen mystery series and each book keeps getting better and better.  I recommend reading Murder in Marinara first because it will give you some background on these characters and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Blog Tour & Review: The Wolfe Widow by Victoria Abbott

Falling in love again …

by Victoria Abbott

No sooner has Jordan Bingham recovered from Lord Peter Wimsey when she’s falling in love again, this time with Archie Goodwin.  I guess she’d better take a number because she’s not the only one.  Archie’s been collecting hearts since he first made an appearance back in 1934 as Nero Wolfe’s witty, urbane and tough-as-nails assistant, in the books by the great Rex Stout.  For a man whose beverage of choice is milk and whose suits seem to be tailor made, he’s awfully good in a fight. We don’t think he ever starts them, but we are prejudiced on that topic.

Is Archie Goodwin the sexiest man ever?  It depends on who you ask.  Ask us and we have to say yes, at least in the category of fictional characters.  Ask Jordan and she’ll say, ‘Absolutely.”

Archie may have been dashing around Manhattan back in the thirties, forties and fifties, but he’s still dashing today, forever in his thirties and forever a favorite of the ladies, including more than a few who turned out to be guilty of murder.

This time, Jordan Bingham has it bad. Maybe she likes the sizzling hint of danger that Archie presents. Plus we all know that Nero Wolfe’s right hand man never really settled down. Is that part of the irresistible lure of Archie?  Or is it the old appeal of the totally unavailable love interest? You can’t get more unavailable than a character who hasn’t appeared in a new book for many years.

Never mind all that. Jordan –  the first person in her large Irish family to go straight –  appreciates that Archie is clever and streetwise and he knows when to bend the rules.  He turns out to be not just a man to dream about, but a good guide to getting out of tough situations.  In fact, Archie seems born for tough situations. He never backs away. Neither does Jordan, so that’s no big surprise. He is witty and wisecracking in life-threatening scrapes, something that Jordan can admire and even emulate.

Sure, she has Officer Tyler Dekker, the young police officer who is obviously in love with her, but how can he measure up to this perfect hero?  Anyway, Tyler is out of town, supposedly on ‘training’ and Jordan’s close friends are all unavailable for no apparent reason.  What’s that about?

She has to deal with being fired and saving her employer’s life (and book collection), apparently alone. Luckily, she can take inspiration from Archie, a guy who never lets you down when your life’s on the line.

Even when she’s trying some daring “middle of the night” escapades, she can draw inspiration from her new hero and maybe make it alive to the next day.  Fingers crossed.

How about you?  Have you ever fallen hard for a fictional character?  How did that work out for you? Let’s hear it.

After all, she gets to work at home in her cozy office — or at her roomy dining room table or on her deck in summer — writing what she has always loved to read: mysteries. And she gets to write in her pyjamas if she wants, with her miniature dachshunds, Daisy and Lily, snuggled up. She can take her breaks with her husband and the pooches in the dog park and it’s no one’s business but her own. What’s not to love? Plus anyone who has ever made her mad has ended up in a book. No wonder she’s usually in a good mood.

MJ discovered mysteries as a child and read her way through the classics. Later in libraries, she found that people would pay her to select mysteries. They could have saved a bundle if only they’d realized who they were dealing with. She also learned how wonderful and varied crime fiction can be. Jennifer’s Review of The Wolfe Widow

Review (4.5 Stars): This is a great series for me and it keeps getting better with each new mystery that is released. Jordan is a character that you will instantly like and the entertaining characters that are in her life will make you want to keep coming back for more.  In The Wolfe Widow, Jordan meets Muriel Delgado late one night at the Van Alst home and before she knows it, she is fired from her job and sent back to live with her eccentric uncles. While Jordan is back home, she tries to learn as much as she can about this mysterious stranger and why she had decided to come live with Vera.  Learning the truth about Muriel puts Jordan’s life in jeopardy and she needs to find the answers quickly before she becomes another victim.

This is the third book in the Book Collector Mystery series and I love spending time with these characters.  Each book focuses on a classic mystery writer and I enjoy learning the different aspects of Jordan’s job as a book collector.  Each mystery is extremely fascinating and The Wolfe Widow is a great addition to the already delightful mystery series.  This mystery was well-written and entertaining and readers will definitely want to add this mystery to their own collection. Can’t wait to see what is in store for these characters in the next book from this great mother/daughter writing team.
