Book Spotlight & Giveaway: Lie of the Needle by Cate Price

lie-of-needle-200

As the owner of Sometimes a Great Notion, a shop specializing in vintage sewing notions and antique treasures, Daisy Buchanan is a strong advocate of preserving the past. But when a killer strikes, she turns her attention to saving lives…

Talk about a great notion! As a fund-raiser to save a two-hundred-year-old farmhouse and stop an ambitious developer, the ladies of the Historical Society of Millbury, Pennsylvania, are producing a Hunky Men of Millbury calendar. Daisy is delighted to lend her support, and the female population of the village is abuzz with anticipation.

But after Daisy’s close friend Cyril doesn’t show up for his photo shoot and the calendar photographer is found dead, it’s beginning to look like the days may be numbered for the men of Millbury. Can a cryptic verse on an antique sampler help Daisy pin down the killer before another pinup runs out of time?

Jennifer’s Review of Lie of the Needle

Review (4 Stars): This is the third book in the Deadly Notions mystery series and I have to say that this series is really starting to grow on me.  Daisy is such a delightful character and I love the idea of her selling collectable sewing items in her store which always puts her in the middle of a murder mystery.  In this story, the Millbury Historical society is hosting a fundraiser where they will be selling calendars featuring the men of Millbury.  On the night of the photo shoot of Daisy’s good friend, Cyril, something sinister happens which leaves the photographer dead and Cyril nowhere to be found.  As the hunt for answers begin, Daisy finds that there is more to this mystery than meets the eye and she fears that her friend may also be the victim of foul play.  Hopefully she can find the killer before it too late or everything they have worked for will go up in smoke.

Lie of the Needle is a charming addition to this intriguing mystery series and I enjoy spending time with this fun cast of characters.  The mystery in this story was very complex and I love the fact that I had no idea who it was until the great reveal.  In this story, we also get updates on the lives of secondary characters and love is definitely in the air in the small town of Millbury.  I was so glad that Eleanor found a second chance at love because she is my favorite character after Daisy.  Looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see what treasures and mysteries that Daisy finds next.

ONCE UPON A GRIND

When coffeehouse manager turned amateur sleuth Clare Cosi roasts “magic” beans for a Fairy Tale Fall event, she brews up a vision that leads to a sleeping beauty in Central Park; a big, bad wolf of Wall Street; and an East Side enclave with storybook secrets…

Fairy tale fever has descended on New York City. Broadway fans are flocking to Red Riding Hood: The Musical; museums are exhibiting art inspired by the Brothers Grimm; and Clare Cosi and her merry band of baristas give their coffee truck a “Jack and the Beanstalk” makeover for a Central Park festival. Clare’s coffee hunter ex-husband contributes a bag of African beans with alleged magical properties. His octogenarian mother entertains customers with readings of the grinds, but Clare remains skeptical–until she receives a vision that helps her find a young model’s body in the park’s woods.

The police dismiss “sleeping beauty” as the victim of a drug overdose. Then Clare uncovers evidence that points to a list of suspects–from a New York Giant to quite a few wicked witches–and a cold case murder that reaches back to the Cold War. Now Clare is really in the woods with a dangerous predator on her heels and an investigation that leads from a secret Prince Charming Club right back to her own NYPD detective boyfriend. If she doesn’t solve this mystery, those magic beans predict an unhappy ending.

Jennifer’s Review of Once Upon A Grind

Review (5 Stars): This is one of my all-time favorite mystery series and Once Upon A Grind is a fabulous addition to this deliciously entertaining series. In this story, we find Clare Cosi and her employees are currently working in Storybook Kingdom, a week-long festival celebrating everything fairy tale related in Central Park. At the festival, Clare and her ex-husband, Matt, find a young woman from the festival who appears to be the victim of an overdose and Matt is arrested because he was seen with the woman earlier that day.  Clare decides to investigate to clear Matt’s name and finds herself with a long list of suspects and a killer that wouldn’t hesitate to add to their list of victims.

This is the 14th book in the Coffeehouse Mystery series and I am always amazed at how each book is more delightful than the last.  Once Upon A Grind is a smart, fun and exciting mystery that will not disappoint fans of the series.  I have always enjoyed Clare as a heroine because she is very intelligent, articulate and is never a damsel in distress.  She never backs down from a situation and is one of the best female characters out  there today.  I enjoyed the fairy tale aspect of this mystery and there were several plot twists and turns that will keep everyone guessing until the end.  This is an amazing series by two talented authors and I hope it continues for many years to come.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Meow If It’s Murder by T.C. LoTempio

9780425270202_medium_Meow_If_It's_Murder

Hello.  My name is Toni LoTempio, and I’m the proud HUMAN to Rocco!

As some of you may or may not know, ROCCO not only runs his own blog, but he is also the “honorary spokescat” for KIDS NEED TO READ, a charity co-founded by Denise Gary, PJ Haarsma and Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly)  In addition, he’s also the inspiration for the feline character NICK in the Nick and Nora mysteries, coming this December from Berkley Prime Crime!
ROCCO has interviewed many authors on his blog, but no one to date has ever interviewed him!  So now…it’s his turn. I interview ROCCO!

TLT:  Hey, ROCCO!  For all our interested readers out there, describe a typical day in your life.

R:  Thank you,  my Human.  Well, I’m usually very busy as you know, what with coming up with authors to interview for the blog, as well as ideas for that new mystery series you have coming out in December.  That takes up a great deal of my time.  My morning usually begins at around 3 a.m. when I start knocking everything off your dresser so you are sure to get up and feed myself and my siblings: brother Maxx and sisters Trixie and Princess.  Once that’s done, I usually bother you whilst you are getting dressed to go to your day job and once you’re out the door, I take a mid-morning nap to regain my strength.
Later, if I am so inclined, I amuse myself by playing with my favorite toy – my ballies! I love to lose them underneath large pieces of furniture so that you can get on your hands and knees and find them for me!  Then when you come home, I meow loudly to remind you that we all still need to be fed! Once that’s done, I trot myself into the den where you are working on one of your (our!!!) books and finagle you into spending at least twenty minutes playing “catch”.  After that, I take my evening nap (usually at the foot of your bed, sometimes next to you) until it starts all over the following day!

TLT: How did you become the spokescat for KIDS NEED TO READ?

R:  You and I were surfing the web one day and came across the charity.  It looked worthwhile, and you were travelling to Arizona that year on vacation, so you set up a meeting with Denise Gary and then we hit upon the idea of having an Ebay auction, publicized by moi on my blog, every summer.  So far we have run two very successful ones and will be doing our third this September.

TLT: What’s the story behind your name? Are you a Sylvester Stallone fan?

R:  Ah, my name has nothing to do with the ROCKY movies.  The lady at the Clifton Animal Shelter, where you adopted me, named my sister Pebbles and me ROCCO. Even then she could see I was a feisty devil.

TLT: I’ll definitely agree with the devil part…..

R:  Moi? Devilish????????? You betcha!

TLT: What do you love most about me?  Dislike most?

R:  Love is an extreme term.  I love the fact that you know to feed us on time.  If I had to hone in on one dislike, it would be you do not play “catch” enough with me.

TLT: Now, suppose you explain how you became the “inspiration” for our new mystery series debuting in December.

R:  With pleasure!  If you will recall, my Human, I have meowed many times to you that you should concentrate on writing stories about a cat such as myself and give up on the vampires and other such supernatural creatures.  After your supervisor concurred with my assessment one day, you came home and after watching a “Thin Man” movie on Turner Classic, got all fired up and started calling me “Nicky”.  Thus was born the Nick and Nora mysteries! My only regret is it had to be rewritten to eliminate my “talking”, MOL! (Meow Out Loud)
And I did come up with the title…MEOW IF ITS MURDER…although to date I have received absolutely NO credit for doing so, hisss!!!!!!!!!

TLT:  Just for fun…
Catnip or scratching post?   Scratching the arms of your couch!
Tabbies or Tuxedos? Both are equally fine.
Fish or Steak? Sardines

TLT:  Rocco, where can readers find out more about you and our mysteries?

R:  My human has a website www.tclotempio.com  and one can always check my blog, www.catsbooksmorecats.blogspot.com  Not only do we have at least 3 author interviews/giveaways per month, we also post news about the Human’s upcoming books!

The first Nick and Nora mystery, MEOW IF ITS MURDER, for which I am the inspiration for the tuxedo cat Nick, will be available December 2 from Penguin/Random.

TLT: Any last words?

R:  Pad softly and carry a big fish.

Nora Charles doesn’t believe in fate, even if she is a crime reporter who shares a name with a character from The Thin Man. In fact, she’s moving back to Cruz, California, to have a quieter life. But after finding an online magazine eager for material, and a stray cat named Nick with a talent for detection, Nora’s not just reporting crimes again. She’s uncovering them…

Back in her hometown, Nora reconnects with old friends and makes some new ones, like Nick, the charming feline who seems determined to be her cat. But not everything about Cruz is friendly. Writing for a local online magazine, Nora investigates the curious death of socialite Lola Grainger. Though it was deemed an accident, Nora suspects foul play. And it seems that her cat does too.

Apparently, Nick used to belong to a P.I. who disappeared while investigating Lola Grainger’s death. The coincidence is spooky, but not as spooky as the clues Nick spells out for her with Scrabble letters—clues that lead her down an increasingly dangerous path. Whether fate put her on this case or not, solving it will take all of Nora’s wits, and maybe a few of Nick’s nine lives.

Jennifer’s Review of Meow If It’s Murder

Review (4.25 Stars): Nora Charles has moved back home to take over the family business, Hot Bread and is ready for the simple life.  She had her share of excitement as an investigative reporter back in Chicago and can’t help but get involved when she reads about the murder of local socialite, Lola Grainger.  Lola used to be a customer of Nora’s restaurant and Nora feels that her accidental death looks more like murder.  With her new furry companion, Nick, she sets out to find answers but finds herself in hot water because someone wants Lola’s death to remain an “accident” and will stop anyone determined to discover the truth.

Nick and Nora Charles have always been one of my favorite crime-fighting couples and I’m delighted to have a new mystery series with fun characters of the same name.  Nora was such a smart, sassy heroine who was used to getting what she wants after everything she learned as an investigative reporter in Chicago.  I loved the idea of her returning home to run her mother’s restaurant and she was a character that you could instantly relate to.  Her cat, Nick, was an entertaining sidekick for this mystery and I can’t wait to see what kind of trouble he can get in next.  The murder mystery in this book was well-written and engaging and will definitely keep readers on their toes.

Meow If It’s Murder is a charming cozy mystery that will have readers clamoring for more of Nick and Nora.  This is the first book in a brand new series and I have to say this crime-fighting team is a real winner.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Spell Booked by Joyce and Jim Lavene

What’s a male witch to do?
By Jim Lavene

I’m Brian Fuller – part-time student – full-time witch.

That’s right. Not a warlock. We don’t like to be called that. I’m a male witch.

I’ve never ridden a broomstick but I have attended a few Sabbats or witch holidays. I don’t have a black pointy hat or a cape. I do have a wand because I’m an air witch and that’s my tool.

So I’m going through my life, enjoying everything as the grandson of a powerful member of the Grand Council of Witches. My parents give me anything as long as I stay out of their way. It’s been like that for years. I don’t mind.

Then I meet this crazy bunch of old witches. Olivia was nice. Elegant and sexy. We went out on a date and she was found dead the next morning. For some reason, her friends thought I had something to do with it. Me! I’ve never killed anyone in my life. I don’t even like squashing bugs.

This one older chick, Molly, was really obnoxious. So I warned her off. She went into hyper-protective mode, worried about her family. She’s chasing me around Wilmington, trying to prove I murdered Olivia. She even put a summoning spell on me to get me where she wanted me. I fought that off but we came to a truce of sorts. She wouldn’t bother me anymore. I wouldn’t bother her. I even admitted that I owed her one.

What’s the first thing she does? Summon me in a big cauldron full of hot water. It’s sitting over a huge fire in a cave under her shop by the river, and I’m in my underwear. She says she needs me to prove who killed Olivia. As long as she’s not looking at me, I’m okay with that.

Too bad Cassandra, the herald to the council of witches, sees me there. She’s bound to tell my parents and my grandfather. They won’t like it.
But I kind of like the new witch, Dorothy, that is joining their coven. She’s a librarian, of all things. She’s funny and sassy. She’s just learning magic (at her age) but that doesn’t bother me. She still thinks magic is fun and exciting. I like being around her.

Not enough to join the crazy old witch coven with her friends, but I figure I can hang with Dorothy without joining up. The three of them (even Olivia’s ghost) are like a family. I’ve never needed that in my life, but I admire it. And I sure admire Dorothy, you know? She is sweet!

Once upon a time in Wilmington, North Carolina, three witches ran a curio shop named Smuggler’s Arcane. But as the years passed, their magical powers started to fade—leaving them no choice but to conjure up a retirement package…

Before they could blink their eyes or twitch their noses, Molly, Elsie, and Olivia somehow became eligible for AARP. But they can’t fly off to Boca Raton just yet. First they must give up their magic, recruit and train three new witches, and pass on their cherished spellbook.

They’ve barely begun to consider potential practitioners when Olivia winds up dead and their spellbook is stolen. To honor their friend and reclaim their spells, Molly and Elsie are about to go wand-to-wand with a dangerous young witch more powerful than the trio was in their prime. Jennifer’s Review of Spell Booked

Review (4.5 Stars): What a great start to a series!  I was simply enchanted by the ladies of Spell Booked and these fun characters will definitely put a spell on cozy readers.  I loved Molly, Elsie and Olivia in this story and how these ladies were looking for replacements since they were getting so close to retirement.  Dorothy was cute as a witch-in-training and I found myself laughing out loud at all the magic spells that didn’t go the way they wanted them to.

The murder mystery was well-written and had so many different plot twists that I had a hard time trying to figure out the true killer, which is always a plus for me.  Spell Booked was a delightful and intriguing mystery and I can’t wait to see what is in store next for these lovely ladies.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Death With All The Trimmings by Lucy Burdette

Death with All the Trimmings copy 2

 Writing Cozy Mystery Characters
by Lucy Burdette

I’ve always been a huge reader. I tore through the Nancy Drew mysteries, then moved on to my brother’s Hardy boys adventures, gobbling lots of teenage romances in between. I also enjoyed a less well known series featuring a nurse named Cherry Ames. This sticks in my memory: Cherry was working on a hospital ward and one of her patients reported a fever and chills. She did just what she was supposed to: got a blanket for the sick person and reported the symptoms to the supervisor. Now here’s where the facts get fuzzy: I think the supervisor on duty had it in for her and didn’t write down what Cherry told her. And later, she got in big, big trouble for failing to report those important symptoms. And now Cherry had a dilemma: Did she rat out the other woman, or take the rap? Isn’t it funny how clearly I remember the character’s emotional dilemma even though most of the other details about the book have faded?

What stays with me even years after reading a book are the characters and their conflicts. So I shoot for that when writing my own series. DEATH WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS, the fifth book in my Key West food critic series, was published December 2. These books are mysteries so I understand I need a body. And suspects. And clues. And theories about the murder.

But more important than solving the puzzle, I’m hoping readers will fall in love with my character Hayley Snow. I hope they’ll feel the shock she does when she sees her ex-boyfriend out to dinner with a new woman. And feel her heart sink when she thinks the job of a lifetime has slipped away. And I hope I’ve made the magic of Key West at Christmas come alive. And I hope readers will fall for Hayley’s family and friends too, and then want to read the next book in the series and recommend the books to friends. And maybe even remember Hayley in fifty years–now that’s what I’d call a dream!

Death with All the Trimmings copy 2
It may be Christmastime, but thoughts of peace on earth, good will toward men, don’t seem to extend to the restaurant business. Food critic Hayley Snow has been assigned to interview Edel Waugh, chef/owner of Key West’s hottest new restaurant. But off the record, Edel reveals that there’s been sabotage in the kitchen and asks Hayley to investigate.

Things heat up fast when the restaurant is set on fire—and a body is discovered in the charred wreckage. Is someone out to destroy the chef’s business—or actually kill her? Amid holiday festivities like the lighted boat parade, and visiting relatives who stir up mixed emotions, Hayley needs to smoke out an arsonist and a killer before they turn up the heat again…on her!

Review (4.25 Stars):Hayley is back with a new assignment for Key Zest magazine to interview up an coming chef, Edel Waugh and finds that someone is out to sabotage Edel’s new restaurant.  When a body is found in the kitchen after a fire, Hayley must find the killer before everything she worked for goes up in smoke.

Hayley is an adorable character and I think that she has the best job ever.  She gets to live in the beautiful and warm Key West and has the great job of being a food critic in an area that has wonderful cuisine. Her relationship with Wally is starting to heat up and things seem to be going her way when she gets the interview with Edel Waugh.  Death with all the Trimmings was a very entertaining holiday mystery that will please mystery and food lovers alike.  I love the recipes in the back of the book and all the descriptions of food that Hayley tried during this story made me so hungry.  Can’t wait to read the next book in the series which is due out next summer.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Keeper of the Castle by Juliet Blackwell

KEEPER OF THE CASTLE
Guest Post by Juliet Blackwell

In Search of Ghosts:

To me, one of the best things about being an author is research.  In the course of writing my two series, the Witchcraft Mysteries and the Haunted Home Renovation series, I get to do things like shop in vintage clothing stores, hang out in Haight Street cafes, and tour historic buildings.

But one of my favorite parts of research is trailing around after paranormal investigators, peppering them with questions:

Can ghosts reach out and “touch” a person?
Can they become violent?
What if you had different ghosts or entities in a building?
From different times, “haunting” the place for different reasons?
How would they interact?
Why are animals sensitive to spirits, and how might they react?

Actually, I try to reserve these questions for either before or after walking through an allegedly haunted house. While on site, I mostly keep my mouth shut, trying not even to breathe loudly for fear of mucking things up…or possibly attracting unwanted attention!

Unfortunately, I have found that there’s a lot of “grey area” in the paranormal realm – which, I suppose, is fitting – so not all experts agree on the rules of the afterworld. Some think we bring our own ghosts with us, for example, while others believe in “residual” energies, and still others think sentient beings sometimes roam the earth.

But here are the “Top Five” things I’ve learned from my recent encounters with “ghost professionals”:

1.    Bring extra batteries (some spirits “borrow” energy by siphoning off battery power)
2.    Don’t wear perfume or scented lotions. Ghosts have a profound sense of smell, and whether they like or dislike what you’re wearing, it might not be a good thing
3.    Animals and children are considered more “sensitive” (and attractive to) spirits.  But since they can’t give consent, it’s unethical to take them along on a ghosthunt, darn the luck.
4.    Wear quiet shoes that are easy to run in (self-explanatory)
5.    Don’t make jokes about the size of the ghostbuster’s equipment (also self-explanatory)

So…how about you?  Have you ever encountered something that felt otherworldly? Do you believe in ghosts at all?

Lately, Mel has been worried about finding enough historic renovation work to pay the bills. But while Turner Construction is in need of a project, Mel’s boyfriend, Graham, has his hands full managing the reconstruction of an ancient building shipped over from Scotland.

With the job plagued by rumors that the stones are cursed, Graham brings in Mel to look for paranormal activity. And while the ghost of a charming Scottish clansman does seem to be hanging around the site, the real shock comes when they stumble upon a body.

When the original construction crew starts running scared, Mel brings in her team to finish the job. Now all she has to do is nail down the killer, and put the spirits to rest, before anyone else winds up heading for the highlands…

Jennifer’s Review of Keeper of the Castle

Review (5 Stars):  I love, love, love the Haunted Home Renovation mystery series because I love any mystery that involves ghosts and the supernatural.  Mel Turner is asked to be part of the crew to help reconstruct an ancient building from Scotland that has been plagued with paranormal sightings and has most of the construction crew running scared.  Mel is no stranger to ghosts and can’t turn down the job offer when there is so many dollar signs offered by the ultra-rich entrepreneur that is funding the project.  Before Mel knows it, she is involved with another murder mystery when she finds a dead body on the work site.  Now, she must work to find the real killer and find out who or what is really haunting the ancient building that is scaring everyone away.

I have loved Melanie from the very first book, If Walls Could Talk, because she is just this lovable character that you can instantly connect with.  She has a difficult job of being a female in male-dominated world, so there isn’t much that can scare her except that she has the uncanny ability of finding ghosts on her work sites.  After everything that she has been through over the course of the series, she still continues to impress me and I love reading her ghost hunting adventures with each new installment.  Keeper of the Castle is an entertaining mystery that will keep readers on the edge of their seat with memorable characters and an intriguing whodunit. Training Cats
by Krista Davis

There are people who believe that cats cannot be trained. Those of us who love cats tend to believe otherwise. The sad truth is that while we might think we’re training our cats, they’re really training us. It’s true. If you are owned by a cat, or two, or more, you might recognize some of these lessons straight from the Feline Manual of Proper Decorum.

1.    Cats should be fed first. Should your person have forgotten to feed you, jump on the table and a) look indignant, or b) eat from your person’s plate. They will soon learn not to eat unless you have been served.
2.    When the house is too cold, one of the following maneuvers usually conveys your displeasure with the setting of the thermostat. When your person has nestled down to sleep, drape yourself over the person’s neck. Be sure to purr loudly. An alternative position is on the chest as close to the chin as possible. You will know you are in the correct position when you are raised and lowered each time your person breathes. If said person does not respond quickly, try a few gentle nips on the chin.
3.    Closing the bathroom door is a most irritating human habit, and one that is hard to break. Try to open the door by inserting an upside-down paw under the door, extending claws, and pulling. If this technique fails, yowl at the top of your lungs. If that fails, practice shooting ahead of the person when you see him or her heading for the bathroom. Sit quietly to teach your person not to be afraid. With time, he or she may leave the door open a bit for you.
4.    Getting your person’s attention. By far the easiest method is the sit and stare. In a matter of minutes, your person should take note that you want something. If this fails and the person has any papers in front of him or her, sprawl across the papers. If the person is typing in front of a screen, walk across the keyboard or sit on it. This generally rouses people from their concentration on unimportant matters.
5.    Keep your people in shape. Darting around their feet when they walk, especially when they walk down stairs, will keep your people nimble and able to continue to do your bidding.

Holly Miller doesn’t believe in spirits, but the Sugar Maple Inn is filled with guests who do. The TV series in development, Apparition Apprehenders, has descended on Wagtail’s annual Halloween festivities to investigate supernatural local legends, and Holly has her hands full showing the ghost hunters a scary-fun time.

But the frights turn real when Holly’s Jack Russell, Trixie, and kitten, Twinkletoes, find a young woman drowned in the Wagtail Springs Hotel’s bathhouse—the spot of the town’s most infamous haunting. The crime scene is eerily similar to the creepy legend, convincing Holly that the death wasn’t just accidental. Now she’ll have to race to catch a flesh-and-blood killer—before someone else in town gives up the ghost . . .

Jennifer’s Review of The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer

Review (4.5 Stars): The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer is the second book in the Paws & Claws mystery series and you’re in for a spooktacular thrill ride with this delightful story.  Holly Miller and the Sugar Maple Inn are hosting ghost hunters for their annual Halloween festivities and before they know it, a dead body is found in the same spot as a famous haunting.  Holly must race against time to find the killer before the local legend becomes a horrible tragedy.

I loved Holly since Murder, She Barked and I love that she is finally settling down with her grandmother at the Sugar Maple Inn.  She is fun, energetic and the perfect crime-fighting heroine for this series. I enjoyed following the crazy antics of the Apparition Apprehenders in this story and deciphering the clues with Holly to determine who was the true killer. The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer was a well-written murder mystery with the right combination of humor, eccentric characters and furry friends that is sure to keep readers entertained.  Looking forward to reading the next book in this entertaining series.

Amish On Stage
By Isabella Alan

When the actors dressed in Amish costume burst into song and dance, I knew I had the setting for my next Amish Quilt Shop Mystery. I was visiting Holmes County on a research trip. I live about an hour from Holmes County, so I rarely spend the night there. However on this particular visit, I booked a hotel stay and show because I was curious about the annual Amish-themed play that the hotel had. Never in a million years did I expect it to be a musical. I think I made the assumption that it was strictly a regular play because many Amish don’t sing outside of church and they definitely do not dance. Seeing actors on stage wearing Amish dress prance about, tickled my funny bone, but as amusing as I found the performance to be, I knew many plain folk would not see the humor in it.

Because I’m a nosy sort, I asked some Amish and Mennonite people I knew how they felt about the musical version of Amish life. Most of them thought it was fine. They were happy with the play because it brought even more tourists to the county. Many plain people depend on tourism for their livelihood. However, others, if not outright hostile about the play, made it clear they didn’t care for how it portrayed the Amish. This diverse reaction to the play among the Amish and Mennonites just confirmed to me that a play was the perfect setting for an Amish mystery novel.

In Murder, Served Simply, the story opens in the middle of a progressive dinner. The progressive dinner was the idea of the Rolling Brook Township Trustees to increase tourism to the tiny township. The big finish for the dinner is a play, An Amish Christmas, at an inn in town. The only problem is the lead actress for the play is a former Amish girl named Eve Shetler. Most of the Amish in Rolling Brook are indifferent to the play, but they do not like it that Eve is an actress. They feel she is mocking her upbringing. So it comes as no surprise that poor Eve ends up dead before curtain call. Now, quilt shop owner, Texas transplant, and amateur sleuth Angie Braddock must find the killer even it means taking a long hard look at her dear Amish friends.

Amish quilt shop owner Angie Braddock has a lot on her plate this Christmas. But things only get worse after someone develops a taste for murder…

Angie’s parents are visiting Rolling Brook for Christmas—but unfortunately, her ex is joining them. Luckily, Angie has no time to dwell on her romantic troubles as she prepares her store, Running Stitch, for the town’s traditional progressive dinner, featuring a sleigh ride stopping at each shop for a different course of the meal.

The meal ends with an Amish-themed Christmas play at the Swiss Valley Hotel and Barn. But the performance is cut short when an actress falls from the scaffolding to her death. After the sheriff suspects foul play, tensions between the Amish and Englisch heat up, as do rivalries among the acting troupe. Now Angie and her quilting circle must stitch together clues before they’re the ones running for cover…

Jennifer’s Review of Murder, Served Simply

Review (4.5 Stars): This is the third book in the Amish Quilt Shop series and I love being able to take a look into the quiet life of an Amish community, especially around the holiday season.  Angie Braddock is gearing up for the holiday season at her shop, Running Stitch, and has her parents visiting her for Christmas with an unexpected guest in tow.  The town is also preparing for their traditional progressive dinner, which is to be followed by an Amish-themed play to end the festivities and has traditional members of the Amish community up in arms about the subject matter. Before the final curtain falls, the lead actress of the play is found dead and it is up to Angie to help find the killer before battle lines are drawn within the community.  This holiday season may not be so festive with a killer on the loose and time running out for this sleepy little community.

Angie is one of those characters that you will instantly adore because she is sweet, smart and has a great love of cowboy boots.  She has worked very hard over the course of the series to become a part of this diverse community and I enjoy that Ms. Alan is able to provide us a glimpse of this private community with each and every mystery.  I also liked how Angie’s relationship has grown with Sheriff Mitchell in this book even though there was a bit of drama in regards to her ex-boyfriend coming to visit her along with her parents.  Murder, Served Simply is a well-written mystery that will be sure to charm cozy readers and is the perfect distraction for this holiday season.  Looking forward to reading more about Angie and her continuing adventures in the Amish community.

Pets are the best! They are our constant companions. They love us when we’re bitchy and in our sloppy PJs with no hair combed and when we have the flu. And they train us really well. Here I thought we were supposed to train them! Ha!

Pet joke:  What side of the door does the cat like to be on? The other side. That’s why I jump up and down the whole blasted night while trying to watch TV to let my cat in and out of the porch. Am I a well trained owner or what!

Then there’s the food issue. Every three days I bake my cat chicken thighs. Not breasts or legs or wings…but thighs. Then cut into small pieces and served room temp. Not cold and not hot.

And then we have the water glass issue. Know that snotty white cat on TV who eats his kibble out of a crystal glass…that’s my cat’s water bowl. Good grief.

Dr. Watson

I have two cats, Spooky and Dr. Watson. Dr. Watson was supposed to be for my son, a gift from my daughter. Yeah, right. We all know how the pet for the sibling thing works…parents get the pet! And I got Spooky out of the grocery store parking lot. He was living in the cart area. I herd this pitiful meow and suddenly had a new cat in my life.

Spooky

If I didn’t have cats I’d have a dog. I know they are more work but they are always happy. Something about a wagging tail will cure any depression, a gift from the pet gods. I have a dog…the other Bruce Willis…in my Consignment Shop mystery series.

In Geared for the Grave there are two cats, Bambino and Cleveland. Here’s a little about Bambino:

I dropped my duffle and snagged a cue, aimed for the far pocket and sailed the yellow-striped ball across the felt till Rudy plucked it right off the table. “Hey, why’d you do that? I nailed that shot.”
Rudy scooped his hand into the pocket, dragging out a sleepy black and white kitten. “Bambino hangs out there, left pocket’s off limits.” Rudy balanced on one crutch–he was a one-crutch kind of guy. “So, Chicago, what brings a pool shark to my doorstep this time of night?”

Tell me about your pet. Where does he hang out? How does he have you trained? I’ll give away two Geared for the Grave totes from the answers.

Jennifer’s Review of Geared For The Grave

Review (3.75 Stars): I love Ms. Brown’s Consignment Shop Mysteries so I was very excited to hear that she was starting a brand new series.  Evie Bloomfield has had her run of bad luck and is hoping that will all change when she arrives at Mackinac Island.  Hoping for a promotion, she agrees to visit her boss’s father, Rudy, who just happens to be recuperating from a broken leg and currently runs a bike shop on the island. Shortly after Evie’s arrival, Rudy becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a wealthy resident and it is up to Evie to help find the real murderer or run the risk of losing her job back home.  The only problem is that Evie is having a hard time finding someone on Mackinac Island that didn’t want the victim dead and the true killer will do anything to keep the truth from coming out.

Evie was a fun character that always seemed to find herself in the middle of trouble.  She was a bit of a klutz but her heart was in the right place and she was trying to prevent Rudy from being arrested for a crime that he didn’t commit.  Mackinac Island was full of interesting and crazy characters that made this mystery entertaining and I’m looking forward to seeing how Evie acclimates to her new small-town surroundings after being in Chicago for so long.  The only thing was that the mystery was a little on the slow side for me but I’m sure things will definitely pick up in the next installment of this mystery series.

Kate Carlisle on Creating Lighthouse Cove

Hello, my name is Kate Carlisle, and I have power over life and death.

Fictionally speaking.

I’ve just launched my second mystery series, The Fixer-Upper Mysteries, with A HIGH-END FINISH (available now in paperback and ebook), and I brought to life an entire town for your reading pleasure.

old-homicide-225
At first glance, Lighthouse Cove is an idyllic northern California coastal community, with a charming downtown and amazing views everywhere you look, but behind that perky façade is a growing sense of unrest. (This is a mystery series, after all.) Those with all the wealth want more of it, and they won’t let small-minded townies get in their way.

Shannon Hammer bridges the gap between have and have-not. She’s blue collar all the way, townie to her core, but she makes nice with the rich and powerful because her construction company is the go-to choice for the wealthy owners of all of the cliffside Victorian homes in need of restoration. In Lighthouse Cove, the best man for the job is a woman.

The Bibliophile Mysteries, my first mystery series, are set primarily in San Francisco, so I work within the framework of a place that really exists. With the Fixer-Upper Mysteries, though, I needed to create Lighthouse Cove from the ground up with such a sense of history and place that it would feel as real to readers as it does to me.

From A High-End Finish:

I turned up the radio to distract myself and cruised through downtown past the Town Square on my way to one of my houses a few streets north of Main Street.
The Town Square was pretty much deserted at this time of the morning. In the center of the grassy square, a large gazebo was set beneath sheltering trees. During the summer, free band concerts were held there on the weekends. Everyone in town turned out, carrying their lawn chairs and picnic hampers. The ice cream shop on the corner did a bumper business on those nights. Some of my earliest best memories had taken place right here. Fireworks. Marching bands. My mom and dad holding hands. Ice cream.

Now, though, the Square was silent. I scanned the area anyway on the off chance that I’d catch a glimpse of one of my girlfriends opening her shop, but the only place open was the diner on the corner. The other shops on the Square wouldn’t open for business for another two hours or more.

It was just as well, I realized as I drove on. I should probably avoid the area for the next few days. I knew my gossip quotient had skyrocketed since I’d stumbled over Jerry’s body on Sunday. Everyone in town would be vying to get the inside scoop from me, but I dreaded the whispers and questions that would follow. I had to endure scrutiny and doubt from the new police chief, but not from people I’d known my entire life.

I hope Lighthouse Cove will be a town you’ll enjoy visiting again and again. Grab A HIGH-END FINISH to get in on The Fixer-Upper Mysteries from the very beginning!

Jennifer’s Review of A High-End Finish

Review (5 Stars): I loved this book from beginning to end and enjoyed my time meeting its heroine, Shannon Hammer.  Shannon owns a home-renovation business in Lighthouse Cove and is a character that you can instantly connect with. She is smart, sassy and can definitely hold her own in any situation and finds herself a suspect in a murder when a man is found dead at one of her work sites.  Since she was on a disastrous date with him the night before and threatened to kill him when he got physically abusive with her, Shannon isn’t surprised that she is high on the list of suspects.  But when Shannon starts to dig into the background of the murder victim, she finds that his past behavior has left quite a few people wanting him out of the picture.  The more Shannon uncovers, the more her life is in jeopardy and she is one step closer to becoming this killer’s next victim.

A High-End Finish has the perfect combination of a strong heroine, quick-witted humor and a clever who-dunnit that is sure to charm mystery lovers.  Kate Carlisle is a wonderfully talented mystery writer and I absolutely adore her Bibliophile mystery series. Her new series debut is definitely a winner for me and I now have another great series to look forward to spending time with.

Jennifer’s Review of Knot in My Backyard

Review (4.25 Stars): This is the second book in the Quilting Mystery series and I enjoyed this mystery much better than the first one, Forget Me Knot.  Martha is such a sweet character but when she get involved in a mystery, she always seems to find herself in the middle of trouble and a little too close to a killer.  In Knot in My Backyard, Martha is on a mission to help clear a friend’s name of murder and suddenly finds assistance from the unlikely of sources, a biker gang.  With the help of a new friend, Martha must find answers before she becomes the next victim on the killer’s list.

Knot in My Backyard is an entertaining cozy mystery that is a perfect companion for a cold winter night.  I like Martha and her quilting buddies and I was excited to see that Martha had a new romantic interest in this book.  I like her boyfriend, Arlo, but it was nice to see someone else show an interest in her, especially when she feels a little down about herself.  I enjoyed the mystery, which had me guessing until the very end because the victim had his fair share of people that would have loved to see him gone.  This series keep getting better with each book and I am looking forward to see what adventures Martha finds herself in with the next book.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: No Mallets Intended by Victoria Hamilton

Love and Mystery
By: Victoria Hamilton

I started out my writing career as a romance author. Did pretty good, too! I wrote Regency romances, paranormal historicals, and historical mysteries that were actually labeled as romances. But my true love has always been mystery novels. That’s what I read, and now what I write.

Having read hundred of mysteries and yet as a writer of both romance and mysteries, I’m hyper aware of romance elements in mystery fiction. Particularly in so called ‘cozy’ or ‘traditional’ mystery, it almost seems that there has to be some romantic element. Most cozy protagonists are women, and they are usually single, widowed, or divorced.

Even the ones where the main character is happily married, the marriage is often the result of romance in the first few books of the series. The protagonist may start out single, widowed or divorced, but she met, fell in love with and married her significant other in the course of the series. A couple of my favorites are Diane Mott Davidson’s Goldy Schulz mysteries, and the Mary Daheim bed-and-breakfast series, and both started that way.

But then there are those who carry on the romance phase for quite a time. The ones I’m thinking of are Joanne Fluke’s Hannah Swenson mysteries, where the triangle has been carrying on for many many books. She’s making it work, though I know Fluke has experienced a lot of criticism for the extended romantic triangle.

In my Vintage Kitchen Mysteries I was wary of that. Jaymie has a steady boyfriend, Daniel. She has a crush on Detective Zack, who makes her pulse race. She has recovered from the broken heart that Joel’s desertion left her with, and she is growing in so many ways, finally figuring out what she wants in her life. But… as a reader of romance, Jaymie is aware that she is often criticized as being unrealistic to want both the steadiness of a good fellow and the heart racing appeal of the sexy stud.

So with two good men in her life, what’s a girl to do? You may just be surprised.

I can confidently say, with books 4 (No Mallets Intended; November 4th, 2014) and Book 5, (White Colander Crime, November 2015) I will be breaking free of any worry about a love triangle, which I feel is unsustainable over the long run. How many men would put up with it? None that I know of, or at least none who are self respecting. A woman has got to choose at some point.

And Jaymie will. In writing No Mallets Intended I was as surprised as anyone at some of what happens, but it all fits now. I get Jaymie; she’s really not wishy washy in the slightest, she was just looking for that perfect match of reliable and sexy. I just hope – and I am nervous about this – that readers are going to be happy with the direction I go in. I trust that readers will let me know one way or the other!

~::~

About No Mallets Intended

Jaymie Leighton is excited and a little nervous about her current big venture, completely redoing the kitchen at Dumpe House—now the Queensville Historic Manor—in time for the December opening. But the house is mired in controversy, a challenge to the heritage society’s right to own it, and questions about the author hired to write a pamphlet detailing the Dumpe family history and that of the house.

None of Jaymie’s business, so she keeps her head down and her focus on the exact color right for the kitchen, and assembling all the accouterments, including a Hoosier cabinet! She’s also got lots to think about in her personal life with Daniel acting a little odd, and her friend Heidi dragging her in to the trouble between her and her fiancé, Jaymie’s former boyfriend Joel.

But a late night whack on the head with one of the antique mallets Jaymie has been cataloging for the society and a dreadful murder right on the house’s doorstep draws her once again into murder and mayhem. Jaymie faces her most cunning and dangerous opponent yet, but with Valetta by her side and the police chief’s approval, she must figure out whodunit before they do it again!

TO THE MANOR DEAD

The Queensville Heritage Society is restoring the once-grand Dumpe Manor. While Dumpe relatives and society members use the occasion to dust off old grudges, Jaymie Leighton prefers to adorn the kitchen with authentic Depression Era furnishings. A collection of vintage wooden mallets found in the house is a perfect addition to her display, but one also offers a late-night intruder the perfect weapon to knock Jaymie unconscious before escaping.

Though the attack has everyone on edge, nothing is missing from the house. Perhaps it was merely a vagrant who thought the place was still abandoned. But when Dumpe Manor’s resident historian is murdered with a mallet from the same collection, it’s time for Jaymie to turn up the heat on the investigation before someone else becomes history.

Jennifer’s Review of No Mallets Intended

Review (3.5 Stars): In No Mallets Intended, Jaymie is helping to restore the Dumpe Manor with the help of the Queensville Heritage Society but with every project there has been its share of problems. Everyone is fighting over the rights to the property, how they are going to decorate it and Jaymie finds herself hit over the head with an antique mallet while working late one night.  Before Jaymie has a chance to find any answers, she discovers the body of the visiting historian on the property with the murder weapon being another antique mallet from the collection that Jaymie found.  There is something more to the Dumpe Manor and it looks as though someone is willing to kill to prevent those secrets from coming to light.

I have always been a big fan of the Vintage Kitchen mysteries and in this book, Jaymie evolves more as a character which was very nice to see.  Her romantic relationship is on the rocks and Jaymie is finally deciding what she wants in her life and in a future partner. I enjoyed the updates of the people in Jaymie’s life and a new character that I hope we see more of in the future.  No Mallets Intended was an engaging and thought-provoking mystery that will have you thoroughly entertained.  Looking forward to the next wonderful mystery that Victoria Hamilton releases.
