Karen’s Favourite Recipe

If asked what my favourite recipe is, it’s got to be my mother’s chicken soup. My daughter is so obsessed with it that if my mother comes to the house with a pot of the stuff, I have to siphon off my portion and hide it before she eats it all!

My mother’s from Southern Ireland and grew up on a dairy farm and I think this is just a basic family recipe that has been handed down. It’s quite starch-based and looks a bit odd when you see the recipe written down (potatoes and rice?) but my goodness, don’t mess with it. It works!

  • Knob of butter, melted in a pan.
  • Chicken strips (preferably the leftovers from a roast the day before)
  • Chicken stock (again, boiled up from the roast leftovers the day before)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, grated
  • 1 baking potato, grated
  • ½ cup rice
  • Mixed herbs
  • Seasoning

Melt the butter in a pan and gently saute the onion until it changes colour.

Add the chicken stock and bring to heat.

Add the grated potato and carrots.

Season and stir.

Add the chicken strips and rice.

Simmer for several hours.

Serve with a crusty bread roll and salted butter.

Yum!

Renegades Novella

Rumor Cover

 November 4, 2014

      Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iTunes / Kobo

Former Navy SEAL Josh Marx thinks he has it all figured out. He’s living the bachelor lifestyle in southern California, running risk assessment for the Renegades, but most importantly, he’s finally gotten over the unrequited love he’s harbored for his former teammate’s ex wife. Then his buddy calls from overseas, worried because he hasn’t heard from his ex, and asks Josh to check in on her. Josh doesn’t want to get involved, but the same code that urged him to walk away in the first place is suddenly pushing him to change his Christmas plans.

Grace Ashby doesn’t appreciate the sexy SEAL trying to step in and take over. He thinks she’s hit rock bottom by working at a strip club, but she knows differently. She could set him straight, but he’s already rejected her once, and she doesn’t need one more man judging her.

She tells him to butt out of her business and her life. But Josh’s conscience won’t let him walk away this time.

Excerpt:

She pushed to her feet and dried her face. She’d be okay. Her mom would be okay. Grace just needed to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Focus kept her moving forward, right up until she found Josh sitting on her hood, cross trainers propped on her bumper, elbows on knees.

Her stomach dropped. Her shoulders followed. But her heart was already shattered and numb.  “I can’t do this, Josh. I really can’t.”

He pushed from the hood, his stance relaxed, but his expression serious. “When did this happen?”

“Last year. Listen, I have to get to cheer practice—“

“When she came to see me in the hospital, she was perfectly fine.”

Grace sighed heavily. “No, she wasn’t. She hasn’t been fine for nearly ten years, she’s just been hiding it because she didn’t want to burden me.” The thought of her mother being a burden after all she’d done for Grace was ludicrous, and just pushed her anger higher and her sadness deeper. “She started taking medication two years ago, but it hasn’t helped. She was doing better before her roommate died…”

Emotion welled up in Grace’s throat and she couldn’t go on.

“Will it get better?” he asked, his voice filled with the same distress Grace has lived with for the past year.

“No.” The word came out half-rasp, half-whisper. The will to keep all her emotions stuffed away made Grace tremble.

Josh approached her in slow, thoughtful steps. She wanted to back away, but the utter emotional defeat had robbed her of the will to move. And when he wrapped her in his arms, she squeezed her eyes closed, buried her face in his T-shirt…and broke. Just started balling.

His arms tightened as he pressed kisses to her hair. Stroked her back. Rocked her gently side to side. Her second jag in ten minutes dried up as quickly as the first, but she felt completely and utterly defeated.

“I want to help,” he murmured in that low rumbling voice.

Again, too little too late.

She knew she should let go and step back, but, God, she needed someone to lean on so badly. “There’s nothing you can do. There’s nothing anyone can do. It just…is.”

His hands stroked across her shoulders, those big warm hands on her skin, sliding intimately over her Lycra tank, curving over the small of her back and traveling up her spine to the back of her neck. She wanted so badly to lift her face to his neck, to breath him in, to taste his skin, to lick his lips the way she had last night. Craved the pressure of him between her legs, the sizzle of skin on skin.

“Let me take over the expenses here,” he murmured, cupping her head and kissing her temple. “I have the money, and you can’t keep running these crazy hours, Grace. You come here, then you go to cheer practice, then you’re at the club until an ungodly hour. You’re going to make yourself sick, then where will you be?”

The heat glowing at the center of her body immediately cooled, her defenses prickled, and she pushed away. “Mom worked two jobs and raised me for over twenty years. I sure as hell can do it for as long as she needs me.”

joanswan-skyejordan_headshotA little about Skye Jordan:

Skye Jordan is a pseudonym for New York Times bestselling romantic suspense author Joan Swan. Skye’s novels are about enjoying that little wild streak we don’t let out often enough. About those fantasies we rarely get the opportunity to indulge. About stretching limits, checking out the dark side, and maybe even acting a little naughty. They’re about escape and fun and pleasure and romance.

And, yes, even love, because while wicked-great sex is good, happily ever after with wicked-great sex is even better. Skye (aka Joan) lives on the central coast of California in the heart of wine country with her husband and two daughters. As often as possible, she retreats to a hotel with critique partners for a power-writing week where much drinking, laughing, and yes, even working, ensues. When she’s not writing, Skye goes to breakfast with her hubby, attends her daughters’ barrel races, and spends a lot of time with her own horse, Riddle…while her two dogs, Paxton and Indie, tag along. She also loves to read, knit, craft, row, ride, and dabble in photography.

Carrie Ann RyanA little about Carrie Ann Ryan:

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Lucky Harbor Series by Jill Shalvis

LuckyHarborJillShalvis

Guest Post – Jill Shalvis’ Lucky Harbor Series Wrap Up

Lucky Harbor started with three estranged sisters inheriting a dilapidated inn on the Pacific Northwest coast. It was supposed to be all one book, in fact. But I never could manage to contain it in one story so I split it into three, one love story for each sister. My goodness that was fun. It was so much fun, I came up with another trilogy idea. Three strangers stuck alone in a storm in a diner with nothing readily available except a chocolate cake. Hello, chocoholics. I thought it would end there but I’ve never been so happy to be wrong. And so, unbelievably, here I am twelve books later, still as much in love with Lucky Harbor as I ever was. Oh the fun I had coming up with characters and figuring out how to torture them.:) Seriously, I have the best job on the planet.

To celebrate the end of the series, today I’m answering some fan questions about Lucky Harbor.

In Always on My Mind, Leah and Jack have known each other for a very, very long time. When they reunite, do you have a favorite scene between the couple?

When Leah tells Jack’s mother that she and Jack are a couple … which is a really big fib.

Is there a character that really snuck up on you and surprised you when they took over the page?

Mysterious Cute Guy from Lucky in Love! He showed up for about a second in Head Over Heels and I didn’t even name him. But then when I was thinking about creating a new hero, he popped back in my head—it turns out his name is Ty and he is a tortured, bad-boy (well, former bad-boy 🙂

Which hero from Lucky Harbor gets the most reader attention? What do they say about him?

Probably Sawyer Thompson from Head Over Heels … he is widely beloved. And sexy as hell, if I say so myself. 🙂

For the next generation of Lucky Harbor residents, do you think the kids from the different couples will fall in love?

Yes!  I love this idea. I think Chloe and Sawyer’s kid will end up with one of Jax and Maddie’s kids. Just to drive the dads nuts. Can you imagine Sawyer as the father of a daughter? I feel sorry for the boys who want to date her.  🙂

***

Saying goodbye to Lucky Harbor was far more difficult than I imagined. I mean I thought I was ready to leave but as I wrote this last trilogy, It’s In His Kiss, He’s So Fine, and One In A Million, it really hit me. It was over. I was so sad that I wrote a holiday novella. 🙂 I couldn’t help myself! Merry Christmas, Baby (12/2) is my love letter to the Lucky Harbor readers (and a surprise revisit with one of my fave couples) who enjoyed the series and stuck with me for twelve books.  TWELVE books. I still can’t believe it. I’m not sure I’ll ever forget Jax, Ford, Sawyer, Ty, Matt, Josh, Luke, Jack, Ben, Sam, Cole, and Tanner…  Sob!  But I have plenty of new stories to tell, so no worries. I’m still writing the animal series and for those of you who read and loved Then Came You this past summer, Still The One comes out 4/15. And … drum roll please … I’ll have a brand new series coming out in 2015. The first book is written and I’m keeping it under my hat a little bit longer but let’s just say there’s some hot alpha brothers coming your way soon.

Jennifer’s Review of One in a Million

Review (4.5 Stars): It is so sad to say goodbye to a series and I loved my time visiting Lucky Harbor with each and every book in the series. In One in a Million, Callie is back in Lucky Harbor to check on her loving grandmother, Lucille, and spend time focusing on her internet wedding business. She has always had a crush on sexy Tanner, but after her previous relationship fell apart, she isn’t ready to have anyone romantically in her life.   Tanner remembers Callie from their high school days and finds himself wanting to spend more time with this sexy yet awkward young woman that he keeps running into at the bakery.  Maybe for Callie and Tanner a second chance at love is just what they need if they can just take that leap of faith.
I loved, loved, loved Callie and Tanner.  I instantly connected with Callie because she felt that she was awkward and socially inept because I have felt that way several times myself.  She was so smart, sweet and funny and I knew that Tanner would fall for her because he needed someone like Callie in his life after everything that he had been through.  One in a Million is a fun, sexy romance that is the perfect ending for this wonderful series.  I love Ms. Shalvis’s books and I can’t wait to read the next series that she comes out with next.

 WHAT IS WITH MIKE McCAULEY?

Every time Delilah Webster runs into Mike McCauley, he practically bites her head off. The rough-and-tumble contractor clearly has baggage. Del has her own emotional scars and knows she’s better off keeping her distance, but Mike’s temptation in jeans and a T-shirt and she’s always been good with her hands…

There’s something about the strong-willed mechanic that sets Mike’s motor running—and scares the hell out of him. Mike has loved and lost and will never hurt like that again, even if that means walking away from a woman who makes him feel alive for the first time in years.

When a simple kiss turns hot and heavy, Mike discovers he can’t stay away, no matter how certain he is they’re destined to crash and burn…

Caffeine addict, boy referee, and romance aficionado, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author MARIE HARTE is a confessed bibliophile and devotee of action movies. Whether hiking in Central Oregon, biking around town, or hanging at the local tea shop, she’s constantly plotting to give everyone a happily ever after. Visit www.marieharte.com and fall in love.

Teaser #3 Excerpt:

She circled the car to unlock his door. He closed in on her instead of moving back so she could open it. Hell. She could feel his breath on her neck and did her best not to shiver. “You want to back up and give me some space?”

“You have plenty of space. You’re little.”

“Please. I’m tall. You’re just a giant.” She turned. Big mistake. Because it put her in his arms, a hairsbreadth from his fine chest and those glorious muscles he’d used to incapacitate Jim in seconds. Jim had been drunk, yes, but he was a mean drunk and a decent fighter.

Mike had taken him down with little effort. So strong. Bad-ass. Just her type.

“You’re not that big,” Mike said in a low voice. “Just right for—”

She cut him off by dragging his neck down and plastering her mouth to his. For a moment, he remained still, and she wondered if she’d made a huge mistake. Handsome, sexy, probably rich Mike McCauley wouldn’t want some cool chick like Del. He’d be after a Suzie-homemaker like his moth—

He kissed her back, taking charge of the embrace. Mike put his hands on her head to hold her in place while he kissed the ever-living breath out of her. She’d never felt so surrounded before. Del had dated larger men, but Mike dwarfed her. So big, so hot, so damn sexy.

He tasted like chocolate chip cookies, and that sweetness made her melt. He knew how to use his lips and tongue to maximum advantage. When he leaned in to her, she thanked her stars she hadn’t zipped up her jacket. He pressed his chest against her breasts, and she sagged against the car, weak with desire.

He pulled back to look at her. His eyes had darkened to a sapphire blue. His lips were slick, his mouth taut, a furious hunger on his face. “I knew you’d be like this.”

Before she could ask what “this” meant, he dug his fingers into her hair, holding her in place while he angled her chin up and dove in for a second kiss.

MH3-cropped200A little about Marie:

I’ve been writing as far back as I can remember. Interest in the written word, no doubt spawned by my English teacher father, continues to this day. I’m a voracious reader, gobbling everything from romance to horror to fantasy and more. I’m in love with the art of putting pen to paper…so to speak.

I majored in English from Penn State University, earning a B.A. in Liberal Arts, as well as a commission in the United States Marine Corps. Five years later, after serving as a communications officer, I left the service to focus more on family. After going through an assortment of jobs–the Marine Corps Reserve, an IT representative, a middle manager for a Fortune 500 transportation company–I stopped working to raise two new additions to the family–my youngest sons. During this period, I decided to stop dreaming and start seriously writing.

In December of 2004 my first story was published, and I haven’t looked back since.  I currently have over a hundred titles (yeah, shocked me too!) with Carina, Ellora’s Cave, Fated Desires, Loose Id, Samhain, Sourcebooks, and Totally Bound.

I’ve received several awards to include: the 2005 Passionate Plume for Scifi/fantasy romance, the 2006 Amber Quill Heat Wave contest winner, 1st Place in Steamy Erotic romance for the 2006 Lories, finalist in the 2007 Linda Howard Award of Excellence, finalist in the 2008 Reveal Your Inner Vixen MRWA contest, and finalist in the 2012 Reveal Your Inner Vixen MRWA contest.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The summers you spend at summer camp are indelibly etched on your heart. But what happens when the camp you love is about to close? Can you ever really say goodbye to the place that made you who you are? These are the questions that plagues Ethel, the seventy-year-old former camp director who is nursing a broken heart after losing the love of her life as she now faces the impending closure of the camp on Lake Wenatchee that she called home. It’s also a question that inspires change in forty-year-old Shannon, who spent the summers of her youth as a vibrant, capable camp counselor and is now directionless after watching her career implode. And there’s Laura, who has lost all intimacy with her husband and doesn’t know if she can save what seems to be gone forever. Finally, Ruby, who betrayed Ethel years ago and hasn’t spoken to her since, hopes this will be her chance to make amends. When the four women learn that a homeless teen has been hiding at camp, they realize camp is something much more immediate for all: survival.

And so the three generations of women search for a way to save the place that saved them all, finding in the process a way back to themselves and each other in The Firelight Girls, Kaya McLaren’s novel of love and loss, heartbreak and healing.

REVIEW:
This is a story of 5 women. It is heartwarming and if you ever spent time at a summer camp this will bring back warm memories. These women formed a friendship and while each has moved on when the camp is closing they find themselves back together again to spend time to reminisce and talk about how the camp changed them.

The characters really drag you in. There is someone for everyone. Which one are you? Which is more like your friends? This is comforting and warm. It is a great book to curl up to by a fire and have some “me” time. A light read made to enjoy.

IT’S NOT EASY BEING RIGHT

Vanessa Campbell is a CPA by day and a perfectionist by night. She’s fit, successful…and decidedly lonely. She can’t stop thinking about the youngest McCauley brother, Cameron. He’s just like her: smart, attractive, and usually right—except when dealing with her.

…BUT SOMEONE’S GOT TO DO IT

Cameron McCauley likes Vanessa a little too much. She’s a blond goddess with a razor-sharp tongue. She hates to be wrong, just like him. But she can hold a grudge and is stubborn to a fault—also like him.

A past disagreement has them rubbing each other the wrong way. Cam is dying to shake Vanessa up—get her to let loose. But if he succeeds, can his heart handle it?

Caffeine addict, boy referee, and romance aficionado, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Marie Harte is a confessed bibliophile and devotee of action movies. Excerpt:

“Colin,” Cam tried again. “You know dumping water on someone in the shower is a no-no. And especially Ubie’s new girlfriend.” Ubie—short for Uncle Brody. Brody Singer, the blond “adopted” McCauley who had grown up as part of the family

“But he told me to do it.”

Cam blinked. “He did? Well, you should never—”

“Dad thought it was kind of funny after he yelled at me.” Colin gave him a sharp nod, then added with a smirk, “Dad said he used to do that to you, and that you cried like a girrrl.” Considering Colin’s anti-girl phase, that was a high insult.

“Is that right?” Cam frowned, remembering being the butt of too many jokes while growing up. “Mike has no idea what he’s dealing with. You think your dad’s tough? Watch Uncle Cam.” Knowing he shouldn’t encourage the mischief in his nephew’s eyes but unable to stop himself from the unspoken dare, Cam hurried to the kitchen, found a large glass and filled it with ice-cold water. Considering the freezing January wind outside, Mike would be basking in a hot shower to warm up. Cam grinned, looking forward to his brother’s howl of misery.

Colin trailed him like a puppy. “Oh wow, Uncle Cam. Are you going to get Dad?” He clapped.

“Shh.”

“Oh, sorry.” Colin’s big grin showed a missing front tooth.

Cam walked down more ugly brown carpet that looked as it if had been vacuumed to death—Mike and his obsession with cleanliness—and tiptoed into the big guy’s room. He made sure he had a clear exit. If his goliath big brother caught him, he’d be toast. Fortunately, he could move like a gazelle.

Gliding into the master bathroom, he readied himself. One, two…three. He yanked open the curtain and tossed the cold water at…Vanessa Campbell?

He stared in shock at the sexiest woman he’d seen in a long, long time. Naked, her creamy skin glistened with water as she gaped at him in horror. Which quickly turned to anger.

“Cameron McCauley!”

“Oh, wow.” He couldn’t look away

Kelly’s Review:

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2

Awe, Marie does it again.  I think Cameron & Vanessa are my favorite so far.  I just love how they are so much a like yet different.  That Cameron knows how to push Vanessa’s buttons and how she fights back.  I loved how even when they fight they don’t really fight.   Unless of course Vanessa is wrong then the fight is to the death. These two are just great.

And the side story with Pop & Bitsy is great too.  And I loved the introduction to Mike & Del’s book.  hehehe….. This one is going to be a fun ride, can’t wait to read.

If you have not started this series you should really think about it.  These McCauley boys are hot and know what they are doing.  Well most of the time 🙂  And if I were you I would start at the beginning (you don’t have to but I would)

Disclaimer:

I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley & Sourcebooks Casablanca in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

For Olivia Bentley, Lucky Harbor is more than the town where she runs her new vintage shop. It’s the place where folks are friendly to strangers-and nobody knows her real name. Suddenly she’s rushing into the surf, getting up close and personal with the hottest guy she’s ever laid hands on.

Charter boat captain Cole Donovan has no problem with a gorgeous woman throwing her arms around his neck in an effort to “save” him. In fact, he’d like to spend a lot more time skin-to-skin with Olivia. He’s just not expecting that real trouble is about to come her way. Will it bring her deeper into Cole’s heart, or will it be the end of Olivia’s days in little Lucky Harbor?

Kelly’s interview with Jaci Burton

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome back the awesome Jaci Burton to the blog.  To chat about life, influences and her newest release Hope Burns.

Jaci Burton Photo by Steve ErvinJaci, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I live in Oklahoma with my husband and my dogs. Between us we have three grown kids and several grandchildren. I’ve been writing for thirteen years, published for eleven. I’ve written over sixty books so far, and have no intention of stopping any time soon.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Not always. I’ve been reading romance since I was a teenager. I dabbled a bit in writing romance in my early adult life, but working and raising kids was my priority then, and writing was backburnered until I had more time.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

My writing was influenced by all those awesome authors I read for so many years when I was young and first started reading romance. Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers, Johanna Lindsey, Elizabeth Lowell, Karen Robards.  They all made me fall in love with the genre and kept me reading. My favorite writers today are Julie James, Maya Banks, Shannon Stacey, Jill Shalvis, Nora Roberts, Nalini Singh and so many more.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

When I first published, I wrote in several genres—not only contemporary, but paranormal, suspense, futuristic and fantasy. It was a way to get my feet wet and decide what I wanted to write. But I always came back to contemporary romance. It’s what I love to write the most, a genre I’m most comfortable in.

What are some of your writing rituals?

I don’t know that I have any rituals. Other than coffee first thing in the morning. I go through email and social media to see what’s happening out there while my mind is waking up. Then I’ll start writing.

9780425259788_medium_Hope_BurnsCan you please tell us about HOPE BURNS?

HOPE BURNS is the story of Carter Richards and Molly Burnett, two people who reunite after being apart for many years. They have a history together, and a painful past that must be overcome before the two of them can have a future.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

When I wrote HOPE FLAMES, the first full-length story in the Hope series, it featured Emma Burnett, Molly’s sister. Molly appeared in the book, but only by phone. There was a mystery to her, a reason why she never returned to Hope. I knew then that I needed to write her story.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m currently working on Love After All, Book 4 in the Hope series. It’s about Chelsea and Bash, two characters I love so much.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

There’s a holiday parade in progress in downtown Hope. Molly’s one of the judges.

What would you be if you were not an author?

Probably still working in corporate life. Dealing with spreadsheets and budgets and personnel issues. Did I mention I’m very happy to be a writer? 😉

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I can’t wait for He’s So Fine by Jill Shalvis. I love and adore her Lucky Harbor series. And I’m really looking forward to Maya Banks’ Keep Me Safe, the first book her new series.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I’m so excited about the reissue of my Wild Riders series with new cover art. Hot men on hot motorcycles. Really, everyone should check them out! And thanks so much for letting me be a guest here on your site!

Whether hiking in Central Oregon, biking around town, or hanging at the local tea shop, she’s constantly plotting to give everyone a  happily ever after. Visit www.marieharte.com and fall in love.

 Teaser #4:

“Men are stupid.” Vanessa shrugged.

“Is Cam stupid?” Maddie asked in that smarmy voice that always drove Vanessa nuts. Even as a kid, her cousin would get that smug tone in her voice and use it with unerring precision, landing on Vanessa’s last nerve.

“He’s a man, therefore he’s flawed. However, he’s not as idiotic as Brody or Flynn, and that’s something to be proud of.” She gave Maddie an overly wide grin.

“Witch.” Maddie stuck her tongue out.

“Oh. That hurts. Not the tongue.” Vanessa laughed at her. “You know, I still think you should have majored in theater in college, not interior design.”

“Thanks so much for your unasked-for opinion.”

Abby sighed. “Ding ding. Okay. Back to your corners.” She ran a hand through her long black hair. “And to think I missed our girlie chats.”

Vanessa smirked. “You missed me, you mean.”

“The ego. It never quits.” But Maddie smiled as she said it.

“So tell us about Cameron.” Abby drew out his name. “Come on. You have to give us something.”

Vanessa thought about his smiling eyes, his deep laugh, the hands that sent her soaring. And the keen intelligence and dry wit. She glanced up to catch a look between her roommates. “What?”

“Oh, nothing.” Abby cut off whatever Maddie had been about to say. “So the Four Seasons, huh? I bet the room was nice.”

“Oh yeah. A suite overlooking the water. Really classy.”

Maddie perked up. “Hmm. Maybe I should have Flynn take me there for Valentine’s Day.”

“Speaking of that,” Abby segued, “Brody and I have been talking about Bitsy. I mean, Beth.” Only Brody called Beth McCauley by the cute nickname, the same name he’d been calling her since she’d pseudo-adopted him so many years ago. “This is her first Valentine’s Day in over thirty years where she’ll be alone. We were thinking of spending it with her.”

After a pause, Vanessa said, “You know, you two probably have plans. Mike will be with Colin, I’m sure. Why don’t I spend the night with her?”

“But what about you and Cam?” Abby asked.

She shrugged. “We’re pretty new. Besides, we’re keeping this casual. Low key. So I’ll spend the night with her, and Cameron too, if he’s not busy, and you guys go out like you were planning to.”

“You sure?” Maddie asked.

“Yeah.” Besides, this way she wouldn’t be so nervous about her relationship progressing too quickly.

Writer’s Tips & Tricks Day 17 part a: Tips to Build in Emotional Stakes in Your Book by Jennifer Apodaca

T&T_edited-1

Tips to Build in Emotional Stakes in Your Book

by Jennifer Apodaca (Also writes as Jennifer Lyon)

The emotional stakes in a story will hook a reader and keep her invested in the book to the very end. An action-packed plot is fantastic—but all the action or twists in the world won’t keep the reader interested if she isn’t invested in the characters.

Let’s ramp up the emotional stakes so the reader is living out the story right there with our hero and heroine! We want her to feel their hopes and dreams, their fears and heartbreaks. We want readers to be rooting for the characters to triumph.

We do this by weaving together the external conflict that drives the plot, and the internal conflict that drives our characters and their decisions. That way the character’s goals mean more to the reader. She will know the heroine’s desperation to save her baby from a brutal ex stems not only from a mother’s love, but also from the fact the heroine lost her family to a house fire at six. The heroine’s baby is her only family. Now the reader is deeply invested with the heroine, nearly as desperate as she to keep the baby safe.

To understand our characters internal conflict, we need to understand their goals (usually part of the external plot), their deepest desire, and their greatest fear. I’m going to use my recent release HER TEMPORARY HERO to illustrate how internal conflict increases the emotional stakes, and ramps up the overall tension in the story because the readers are more invested in the characters.

Here is the opening set up: Logan Knight, a former Marine struggling with PTSD comes home to his ranch to find a beautiful woman and baby hiding in his house. He quickly learns that Becky Holmes is a desperate woman on the run from a brutal ex and needs a temporary hero to help her get full custody of her baby. She could be the answer to his problem as he needs a wife before his thirtieth birthday to secure the land he wants to build Camp Warrior Recovery for veterans suffering from PTSD. The problem? Logan’s trigger for his PTSD is children, especially babies. He can’t ever have a real marriage and family because of that.

But if he can manage a temporary marriage, then they can both achieve their external goals: Logan will get his land and Becky will get full custody of her baby.

I have three main tropes in this book. Tropes are easily recognizable themes repeated over and over. For example; billionaires, cowboys, secret babies, marriage of convenience, best friend’s little sister, redemption, vengeance…you get the idea. Here are the tropes in HER TEMPORARY HERO:

1.)    Marriage of Convenience

2.)    Baby on Doorstep

3.)    Tortured Alpha Hero

Now to deepen the impact of the story we weave the external conflict (tropes/plot) with the internal conflict and motivations. To do that we must ask ourselves what are each character’s deepest desires and greatest fears, and why?

In HER TEMORARY HERO the heroine and hero’s greatest fears are:

Becky lost her father, brother, home and way of life in a house fire when she was six. Her greatest internal desire is a family, and her greatest fear is losing her family.

Logan spent his first eight years with his mom, then his rich and powerful father decided he needed a son and fought for custody. Logan’s mom gave up the fight, choosing her career as a singer over her son. After that, Logan never really fit anywhere. His greatest secret desire is to be loved enough to fight for, and his greatest fear is abandonment.

Now we take these two characters and put them in a marriage of convenience with a baby on the doorstep. Then to bring out the emotional stakes we do this:

1.) Tempt them with their greatest, possibly secret or unrecognized, desire:

–Becky: She desperately wants a family. A marriage of convenience gives her that, at least temporarily.

–Logan: To be loved enough to stay. Note: Logan doesn’t fully realized he wants that, but this time with Becky is showing him the temptation of love. By the end of the book, he knows that’s what he truly wants.

2) Terrify them with their greatest fears:

–Becky: Losing her family. She’s suffered that before, and family is more precious to her than ever.

–Logan: Abandonment, not being loved enough, and now he’s so damaged now by PTSD, that he can’t see how anyone would love him. Note: This is Logan’s perception and it’s very real to him even if we don’t see him that way.

3) Lure them into false hope that they might actually get their dream, making them want it all the more. They can taste, feel and touch it:

–Becky tells Logan she loves him attaining her family.

–Logan wants to try, believing that he might really be enough to be loved. He’s hopeful and trying, but can’t quite commit. Fear holds him back.

4) Destroy them with the Black Moment: This should be where the external plot explodes and collides with the character’s internal conflicts.

–A secret is revealed and Becky comes face-to-face with losing her family again. She’s emotionally devastated and desperate to save her baby from her brutal ex, and that forces her into actions she wouldn’t normally take. Logan had told Becky over and over to trust him, and she did…now she’s worse off.

–Logan comes home from his business trip and is faced with his greatest fear of abandonment. He’s furious that Becky would do this to him, that she didn’t trust him…until he realizes that this is really his fault (not entirely but he needs to shoulder his part of the blame). That moment is an absolute turning point for him. And he’s forced into action.

A note about the black moment: This is where characters are backed into a corner and will make a decision that their internal fear would have prevented them from making previously. Change is NEVER easy for humans, so we force them into it with the black moment. Logan is now willing to sacrifice his original goal at the beginning of the book (securing his land to build his camp for veterans suffering from PTSD) to save Becky and the baby he has come to love. It’s a light built moment fraught with tension because we don’t know if Logan will be in time to a) save Becky from the external plot and b) will she be able to forgive and trust him again?

5) Payoff Scenes: Bring it all together in a Happily Ever After

–I won’t reveal how it works out in this book, but this is where the external and internal conflicts are resolved into at least a potential happily-ever-after for romances.  The payoff scenes are the reader’s reward—that sigh moment when all the strife and pain they experienced through the hero and heroine is worth it.

In closing, to ramp up the emotional stakes, use your characters internal conflict to:

–Tempt them with their deepest desire.

–Terrify them with their greatest fear.

–Lure them into false hope.

–Destroy them with the black moment.

–Then save them with the payoff scenes in a happily-ever-after.

Building the emotional stakes creates memorable characters that will live on in readers memories long after they finished the book.
