Henrik Magnusson is supposed to be immortal, but a mysterious ailment leaves the vampire king near death, and not even the blood of the Proffered, human virgins trained to serve the elite, can sustain him. Then he rescues a beautiful young woman from his enemies, and is filled with blood lust and desire he hasn’t felt for centuries.

Photographer Kaira Sorenson’s life takes a nightmare turn when she’s attacked by blood-thirsty creatures—and saved by a vampire. She should be afraid of Henrik, but she can’t deny her intense attraction to this regal, enigmatic being—nor the fact that her blood may be his only salvation. Now she must decide if she’s willing to be his forever…

Excerpt:

Henrik’s back slammed against a brick wall, the darkness of the narrow alley sheltering their trio from the tourists thronging Tromsø’s streets.

Lars stood at the entrance, making sure no one developed an unhealthy curiosity.

Jakob got right up in Henrik’s face, forearm pressing into the king’s chest. “What happened?”

He shook his head, swallowing thickly, his hunger burning so intensely it was almost a living thing within him. “Wanted her,” he rasped. It hadn’t been a decision. There wasn’t anything rational or conscious about it. From the first moment she’d approached him, he was awash in her appealing scent, like the smoky berries of a vintage wine or the rich bite of an aged, dignified whiskey.

“Wanted her how?”

“I wanted her.” He knocked his head against the brick. Even now, he couldn’t shake the image of the vein’s rhythmic dance along her slender neck or of the luscious dip of her cleavage, both displayed so invitingly by her upswept hair. His fangs throbbed with a want and a need he couldn’t remember feeling in ages. Not to mention the aching hard-on between his legs.

“Straight out no-shit bloodlust?” Something like hope sounded in the warrior’s deep voice.

“Ja.” Henrik heaved a deep breath of cold January air as his imagination unhelpfully replayed how it would’ve gone down. Tearing the gown from her trim body. Holding her curves in his hands. Bearing her up against the wall. Sinking his fangs and his cock in deep until every dark, needy part of him was sated.

“I’ll get her.” Jakob turned away.

The king slammed his hand down on his brother’s shoulder and gripped hard. “Nei.”

“You want her. You need her.”

“I’ll kill her.”

Because he wouldn’t be able to stop.

Once he got a taste, something base and instinctual told him he wouldn’t be able to make himself stop. He’d been so close to the edge of his restraint in the gallery. Only the sound of her voice had pulled him back from the brink.

All he’d wanted was a night out of their mountain citadel, away from the looming promise of death. He thought the jovial atmosphere of the festival would distract him from all that was to come. Instead, it had thrown it right in his face. Christ, he was a catastrophe waiting to happen, already more beast than man. He shook his head again. “I’ll fucking kill her,” he rasped.

“You won’t.”

Acid washed through his gut. “You willing to risk an innocent woman’s life—or her soul—to see which of us is right? I’m not.” He shuddered, the danger of becoming like his evil enemies one of his greatest fears. “Leave her be. I’ll not have it any other way.”

Sometimes you want someone so much…

Sometimes you need someone so much…

 Lust can become love.

And love can turn into a deadly obsession.

***

Skye Sullivan knows that someone is watching her.  Not just watching—stalking her.  Months ago, Skye was involved in a dangerous car accident. The accident ended her dancing career and sent her fleeing back to Chicago.   Skye is convinced that her stalker caused the crash, and she fears that he won’t stop pursuing her, not until she’s dead.

When someone breaks into her apartment in Chicago,  Skye turns to the one man she believes can protect her—Trace Weston.  Once, Trace was her lover.  Two lost souls, they’d come together in a firestorm of need and desire. But then Trace had pushed her away. He’d joined the military, vanishing from her life. She’d put all of her emotion into dancing, and she’d tried to forget him.

Now Trace is one of the most successful men in the United States. Rich, driven, and carrying dark secrets, he agrees to help Skye. He’ll protect her from the danger that lurks in the darkness, but Trace wants more than to just be a guard for Skye.

He wants her.  And he’ll take her. The years have changed him, hardened him. He’s not just a poor kid from the streets any longer. Now, he can have anything—or anyone—that he wants. And the one woman he has always wanted has just come back into his life. He won’t let her go again.

But with the threats mounting against Skye, she suspects that her stalker may be intimately close.  He’s a man who knows her too well. As his attacks grow ever more dangerous, she realizes that if she trusts the wrong man, she could be making a fatal mistake.

Lust. Love. Obsession.

Just how far would you go in order to possess the one person you want the most?

Excerpt

“H-hello, Trace.”  She hated that stupid break in her voice.  Trace made her nervous. Always had.He stopped in front of her.  He stood at several inches over six feet, while she barely skimmed five feet three.  Skye tilted her head back so that she could meet his stare.

“It’s been a long time,” Trace said, the words a deep, dark rumble.  His voice went perfectly with the rock hard body and the sexy face—a voice that a woman could imagine in the darkness.

She swallowed because her throat was suddenly dry.  “Yes, it has.” Ten years and three months. Not that she’d counted.

That assessing  gaze of his slid down her body once more.  There was an awareness in his stare that she hadn’t expected. A heat that made her remember too many things.

He was close enough to touch. Close enough for her to smell the crisp, masculine scent that clung to him.

His nostrils flared, as if he were catching her scent, too.

“You look good, Skye.”  Again, that heat was in his stare. A heat that said he knew her intimately.

She wished her heartbeat would slow down.

“But you’re not here for a friendly chat, are you?” And he stepped away from her. He waved to the open chair near his desk and returned to his seat.

“We’ve never really been the friendly chat kind,” she said softly as she eased into the leather chair.

She didn’t take off her coat. She just pulled it closer to her.

A faint furrow appeared between his brows.  “No, we weren’t, were we? More the hot sex type.”

Her lips parted. He had not just said that to her.

His faint smile said that he had.

“I’m not here for that, either.”  She’d been wrecked after her last go round with Trace.

He leaned back in his chair. The leather groaned beneath him. “We’ll get to that…”

Uh, no, they wouldn’t.  She wasn’t ready to feel that burn again.

He tapped his chin. “You’re not here for pleasantries, you’re not here for sex, then why have you come looking for me?”

This was where she’d have to beg. Because there was no way she had enough money in her account to cover his services.  Not with the guy sporting this high rise building and looking like he’d just walked off the cover of GQ.  How things have changed. “Someone is watching me.”

He stilled.  The heat banked in his eyes as his whole expression instantly became guarded. “And what makes you so sure of that?”

“Because I can feel him.” Wait, that sounded crazy, didn’t it? When she’d gone to the cops, they’d sure looked at her as if she were crazy. You couldn’t feel a stalker. So they said.

She disagreed.

Interview with Larissa Reinhart

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Larissa Reinhart to the blog today

Larissa PicLarissa, can you please share with us a little about yourself.

Thanks so much for having me on Books-n-Kisses! What an adorable blog!

I’m a stay-at-home mom who took 20 years off from writing and found it again after my daughters went to school full time. Before we adopted my girls, I taught high school history in Georgia and Missouri and taught English in Japan.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I did as a young girl and even sold my self-made books and magazines to neighbors. I won a national writing contest in fourth or fifth grade and by high school had a column on our local newspaper. Although I loved my creative writing class in college, I felt really intimidated by what I couldn’t write, so gave up and went into teaching.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

During the school year, I write while my daughters are in school and try to get more writing in while they’re doing homework or at their activities. In the summer, my schedule is really thrown off. I still haven’t gotten my writing groove and probably won’t until they go back to school. My editor lets me set my deadlines, so I purposefully set them just before breaks start.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

Getting into that groove when the words flow fast and loose!

Can you please tell us about your latest book?Still Life

Cherry Tucker’s in a stew. Art commissions dried up after her nemesis became president of the County Arts Council. Desperate and broke, Cherry and her friend, Eloise, spend a sultry summer weekend hawking their art at the Sidewinder Annual Brunswick Stew Cook-Off. When a bad case of food poisoning breaks out and Eloise dies, the police brush off her death as accidental. However, Cherry suspects someone spiked the stew and killed her friend. As Cherry calls on cook-off competitors, bitter rivals, and crooked judges, her cop boyfriend get steamed while the killer prepares to cook Cherry’s goose.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

The second time we lived in Japan, there was a huge news story about a poisoning at a festival. That story really stayed with me and as soon as I started writing the Cherry Tucker Mystery series, I knew I wanted to do a story about a festival poisoning.

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

I’ve got two Cherry Tucker Mysteries coming out this fall that are currently in red-line edit mode. HIJACK IN ABSTRACT releases November fifth. When Cherry’s Uncle Will, the county sheriff, calls her in to sketch a composite of a hijacker, she finds herself involved in a related murder while trying to save her local reputation after the town labels her a “pervert artist” for some classical nudes bought by a Buckhead lawyer.

On December ninth, “Quick Sketch,” a novella in the mystery anthology THE HEARTACHE MOTEL, comes out. QUICK SKETCH is a prequel to PORTRAIT OF A DEAD GUY with Todd and Cherry on their way to Vegas where we know the ill-fated wedding occurs. They stop at the Heartache Motel, a sleazy dump filled with Elvis kitsch and drag queens, in order to help Todd’s cousin who’s fallen victim to a poker scam.

I’m also working on a story set in Japan with Aggie, a young woman from Georgia, whose roommate has disappeared with all Aggie’s money. Aggie gets involved with a host of quirky characters to solve the disappearance. I’m enjoying revisiting Japan through my imagination!

PORTRAITWho are some of your favorite authors?

Carl Hiaasen, Jasper Fforde, Meg Cabot, Jennifer Crusie, Sharyn McCrumb, and P.G. Wodehouse. Actually there’s about one hundred more I could name. Listing your favorite authors is like trying to name your favorite child.

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

I think reading a variety of authors and genres for more than twenty years has had a melting pot influence on my writing style.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

I flipped to page 30.

“Of course they want you to look into it. You like to stand up for people like the Parkers. You got a talent for telling the big folks how the cow eats the cabbage.”

A trickle of sweat dripped off his chest and smeared my face. I rubbed the wetness from my cheeks and pulled my head away. Looking up, I saw Todd’s eyes darken. A familiar feeling washed over me. A feeling I once had in Vegas. Just before Todd snookered me into marrying him for a couple of hours.

Hindsight has taught me it’s wiser, as well as cheaper, to avoid those particular feelings.

I hopped back, but Todd’s hands lingered on my shoulders before sliding down my arms.

“Are you all right, Cherry?”

I swallowed the tightness in my throat and folded my arms across my chest. “Of course I am.” I scanned Todd before returning my gaze to the pony rides. “Since we’re done here, would it suit you to walk around for a minute? I want to check out those cook-off booths, especially where Eloise ate.”

“Sure.” He made two long strides toward the food booths be- fore glancing over his shoulder. “You coming?”

That’s what I always liked about Todd. He’s so agreeable. And loyal. Like I said, the Labrador of ex-boyfriends.

“You think you want to make yourself decent first?” I asked.

He glanced down at his bared chest. Leaning over into his favorite muscleman pose, he brought his fists together and flexed his shoulders and arms. He continued with a series of poses, ending with an upraised arm bicep flex. The evening sun streaked his glistening body in gold and amber. Stick Todd in the English countryside instead of rural Georgia, and John Constable would have loved to catch that light effect in one of his landscape paintings (if Constable had considered Guns of Steel at Sunset a worthy subject).

“You don’t think the concessions want to see my pipes?” He grinned, striking another pose.

“I think,” I swallowed and folded my arms over my thumping chest, “they’ve got enough distractions today.”

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I love Darynda Jones’s Charley Davidson series. I’ve only read the first three books, so I’m dying to read number four and waiting for number five.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks so much for having me on Books-n-Kisses! It’s been such a pleasure!

Thanks so much for having me back on your blog! I’m excited to announce the release of my newest book MISFORTUNE’S LADY which is the third story in my Scandal in Surrey series. It’s a m/f/m ménage set in the Regency time period.

Originally, when I set about creating the Scandal in Surrey series, I had no idea there’d be a ménage scenario involved. The overriding theme that connects the books is acceptance in an oftentimes unyielding Society coupled with the heat (literal and figurative) of scandal. These stories are erotic in nature, so please be advised. Unveiling a threesome is pretty scandalous.

The idea came together one afternoon when I was goofing around, brainstorming a flirty scene with a friend. It wasn’t necessarily for this book. In fact, I didn’t have a plot or characters in place for this story yet, but the gist of it was: how about a sexy scene on an outdoor terrace where the men are pursuing the woman with a very determined manner? So, I set out to type said scene. There were no character names except guy 1 and 2. I did have the heroine’s name at that time. The funny thing was, once that scene came together after the crazy brainstorming session, it kickstarted the whole book.

I hope you enjoy it!

Blurb: She wants a slower pace… Miranda Ellis Mason Craythorne is three times a widow. Some say bad luck has dogged her steps; she rather thinks it’s just life, yet the rumors sting. She’s long left her wild youth behind and now lives at her country estate, content to play matchmaker. Seeing John sets fire to the tendre she’s carried for him and causes her to rethink remaining in widowhood even though avoiding matrimony is for his own good.

He wants to settle down… Mr. John Goddard has admired Miranda from afar for years, but their timing has never been right. As a Bow Street Runner-turned-private investigator, he knows mortality has an expiration date. What better woman to start a family with than the one he’s held a torch for? But his penchant for the occasional ménage might sour the plans.

He wants the next exciting game… Richard Howick, who is rarely on home soil, is a spy who wants nothing more than the next adventure. He’s giving life a merry chase and has no plans to domesticate. He’s too much of a rake not to take pleasure when it’s offered, and the opportunity to play the occasional third thrills him.

Life presents an unorthodox chance…While rumors abound and scandal nips at their heels, between the three, desire explodes. If their luck holds, they might just find love in the mix.

Excerpt (Steamy rating):

“Ah.” Her pulse tripped into double time. Mr. Howick had no business being so mysterious or attractive, yet she couldn’t resist engaging him in conversation. “Mrs. Miranda Ellis Mason Craythorne.” Thinner than John, but equally masculine, he sported short, light brown hair and a completely different build. Whereas John had a good three inches of height, the other man seemed leaner, as if he were constantly in motion and used to moving quickly. “Thank you for responding to my invitation.” She dismissed explaining the real reason for her invite. No, Mr. Howick was not a candidate for Annabelle.

Richard grinned and stroked a forefinger along the thin mustache clinging to his upper lip. “I have no doubt we will grow close as the days go by.” He threw a glance to John then focused his gaze on Miranda. “Is there a reason you’ve been widowed three times or are you truly a victim of luck?”

She eyed the men warily.  “Does it matter?” Logic and self-preservation dictated she lead them both into the house and among the other guests, yet curiosity demanded she let the scene play out. Why did they both seem on the prowl?

“It does.”  John closed the distance between them. He slid an arm around her waist and drew her against his chest.  “Perhaps the legality of it all dooms your relationships. Perhaps luck will only favor you if you take a lover.”

Miranda had scarcely drawn a harried breath before Richard came behind her, his hands warm on her hips, effectively holding her between their two hard, male bodies. “Perhaps you need two men to head off any more misfortune because, after all, two of anything is always better than one.”

Dear heavens, what have I fallen into? She stared into John’s face. The crisp, clean scent of his shaving soap sent threads of need between her thighs, yet the spicier aroma that clung to Richard teased her senses and put her in mind of sumptuous bedrooms in the Middle East. “That largely depends on the viewpoint.  If an antelope is tracked by two lions, that’s not good for the antelope.” Which is exactly what I feel like. Gentle rain seeped into her gown but did nothing to cool her overheated skin. If she stood outside much longer, the resulting mess would be talked about with more enthusiasm than if she’d dampened her petticoats.

“Does the antelope wish to be caught?” Richard whispered into her ear.

She fought a shiver. In the men’s loose embraces, waves of need crashed over her. “I can ill-afford scandal, gentlemen. Perhaps we should join the party.”

John’s smoky chuckle caressed her. “It’s only a scandal if we’re caught.”

“I’ve left that life behind.” They had to understand she wasn’t gossip’s consort any longer. She enjoyed her staid life too much to damage it by a careless and dangerous flirtation.

He tucked the escaped curl behind her ear and his fingers lingered on her cheek. “Will you vanish into obscurity then? Give your vitality to the flora and fauna here?” John tsked. “That isn’t the Miranda I used to know, the woman I lusted after.”

“People mature.” She couldn’t help the tremble gliding through her body. Oh, how she’d missed a man’s touch, if nothing else but to be reminded she was still young and alive. “There’s nothing wrong with my life.”

Richard pulled her backside flush against his front. “Except your bed is lonely and cold.”

Oh, God, what would it be like to have them both in her bed? At one time she’d dreamed of having John’s affections, but to know both of these men in carnal ways? A shiver shook her. She banished the inconvenient thought. I want only to rusticate. Yet her body continued to betray her. Her nipples tightened into buds that fairly screamed to be touched. “That is not something I wish to discuss—with either of you.” She couldn’t tell John that at times she cried from needing a man’s presence, for no other reason than to be held in the wee hours of the night.

“Are you quite certain of that?” Richard’s breath warmed her skin and the touch of his lips at her nape seared her.

“I…”  Any moment now, Annabelle would come looking for her. What would her cousin think? A smidgeon of guilt assailed her. Who was she to enjoy the attention of two men when she’d asked them here to catch Annabelle’s eye? Thoughts continued to whirl. Or worse, what would happen if she were found in such a scandalous tangle by Lady Underhill? “If we linger on this terrace, all three of us will have the devil to pay.”  Decadent, wicked heat chased through her insides and culminated between her thighs. It had been so long since she’d known a man’s touch at her sex. How naughty to even contemplate having them both in her bed, but how could she choose between them as they seemed to come as a matched pair?

Regardless of what her body wanted, she firmly shoved away the delicious thoughts. I am not that woman. I do not need to revisit scandal.

John’s eyes twinkled. He ran the pad of his thumb along her lower lip. “Then, by all means, let us adjourn to somewhere more private.”

“And close,” Richard added while brushing his fingers along the side of her neck. “It would be vastly more superior to sipping lemonade and making dull conversation with those chits I glimpsed on my way in.”

The words snapped Miranda out of the fog she’d fallen into. She broke from their combined embrace and backed away. Her chest heaved with the effort of remaining calm. Both men seemed inordinately interested in her bosom. “Gentlemen, I thank you for the interesting introduction, but I really must dash. I have guests waiting, and if my good luck holds, a business venture to embark upon.”

John pinned her with a gaze that smoldered with enough heat to set her skirts on fire. “Our conversation isn’t over.”

She gained an open doorway and stumbled over the threshold. It was clear they wouldn’t be put off so easily. “If you wish to talk with me, call tomorrow for tea.”

Playing the Part Release Party

PLAYING THE PART Release Week event

I love movies. I love movie stars. I love romance novels.

In my latest release, PLAYING THE PART, I got to combine all three and set the book in L.A., a private estate in Hawaii, and in NYC.  My story took place on movie sets, glamorous premieres, and the Oscars.

And I got to write about the action-movie star voted the Sexiest Man Alive for the past two years: Mick Blackwell. He’s a sexy, intriguing playboy who loves to break the rules.  But he’s met his match in Piper James — a sassy romance novelist who decides that Mick is just what she needs to spice up her short visit to L.A.

I loved writing this book.

Early reviews for PtP have been amazing.  NYT and USAToday Bestselling author Gina L. Maxwell said, “PLAYING THE PART blew me away with it’s great characters, fast pace, and enough heat to warrant more than a few cold showers. Mick and Piper complement each other perfectly and make the reader root for them from Page 1. Robin’s writing is tight and engaging and she nailed her characters. Definitely one of my favorite reads of 2013.”

To celebrate the release, I’m giving away 11 packs full of awesome! The prize pack includes:  A movie (either a Mick Blackwell action movie or a Piper James romance-my choice), popcorn, movie candy, and Robin Covington SWAG.

And . . . one lucky winner will get a prize pack and a $50 Amazon gift card!

I will pick the winners on Friday, June 20, 2013 at midnight EST.

Julie Does Julia – and makes Traditional French Baguettes

Julie never did much cooking back in Philadelphia, as the only thing she really liked to make was reservations. All that changed of course, once she found herself in the woods with very few dining options beside what she could create herself. So ever adventurous, she threw herself into French cooking and more than that, traditional French eating, a staple being the crusty baguette to go with the evening meal’s cheese course. So armed with a copy of Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Vol 2, Julie did Andy proud with her crusty fresh loaves of traditional pain… (NOTE: this is made with an electric mixer equipped with dough hook and flat beater).

Julia Child’s French Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) instant yeast
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (120º – 130º)

Directions

  1. In the mixing bowl of a stand mixer using the flat beater, combine the yeast, 2 1/2 cups flour and salt. Mix on low for about 30 seconds.
  2. With the motor running on low, pour in the warm water. Continue mixing until a shaggy dough forms. Clean off beater and switch to the dough hook. Mix in the remaining cup of flour a little at a time, to make a soft dough, adding more or less flour as needed. Knead the dough for 5 minutes. The surface should be smooth and the dough will be soft and somewhat sticky.
  3. Turn the dough onto a kneading surface and let rest for 2 – 3 minutes while you wash and dry the bowl.
  4. Return the dough to the mixing bowl and let it rise at room temperature (about 75º) until 3 1/2 times its original volume. This will probably take about 3 hours.
  5. Deflate the dough and return it to the bowl. Let the dough rise at room temperature until not quite tripled in volume, about 1 1/2 – 2 hours.
  6. Meanwhile, prepare the rising surface: rub flour into canvas or linen towel placed on a baking sheet. (I used parchment paper.)
  7. Divide the dough into 3, 6, or 12 pieces depending on the size loaves you wish to make. Fold each piece of dough in two, cover loosely, and let the pieces relax for 5 minutes.
  8. Shape the loaves and place them on the prepared towel or parchment. Cover the loaves loosely and let them rise at room temperature until almost triple in volume, about 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 hours.
  9. Preheat oven to 450º. Set up a “simulated baker’s oven” by placing a baking stone on the center rack, with a metal broiler pan on the rack beneath, at least 4 inches away from the baking stone to prevent the stone from cracking.
  10. Transfer the risen loaves onto a peel.
  11. Slash the loaves.
  12. Spray the loaves with water. Slide the loaves into the oven onto the preheated stone and add a cup of hot water to the broiler tray.
  13. Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown. (If you used parchment paper you will want to remove it after about 10-15 minutes to crisp up the bottom crust. Spray the loaves with water three times at 3-minute intervals.
  14. Cool for 2 – 3 hours before cutting.

Weaving romance and suspense with threads of the paranormal

Shanon Grey weaves romance and suspense with threads of the paranormal. MEADOW’S KEEP, Book Two in The GateKeepers Series, about the quaint town of Ruthorford, Georgia and its very special inhabitants, is her newest release. It is currently available for download from Amazon, B & N, and Smashwords. The print version will be released later this month. THE SHOPPE OF SPELLS was the first in her series. PENNYROYAL CHRISTMAS ~A Ruthorford Holiday Story~ is out in e-format as well. Under contract with Crossroads Publishing House, her books are available in e-format and print at most booksellers.

Shanon spent her life on coasts, both the beautiful Atlantic and the balmy Gulf. Hurricane Katrina taught her the fragility of life and the strength of friendship, family, and starting over.

She just found out that her son salvaged notes and pages of her original novel, Capricorn’s Child, which she thought has been destroyed with everything else. (Ironically, a neighbor found her marriage certificate in a tree.) She plans to resurrect her original novel one day.

She currently lives in Coweta County, Georgia, trading the familiarity of the coast for the lush beauty and wonder of the mountains, where her husband fulfilled her lifelong dream—to live in a cottage in the woods, where inspiration abounds.
