Up To meTITLE: Up To Me
SERIES #: Shore Secrets #1
CHARACTERS: Ella & Graydon
AUTHOR: Christi Barth

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Ella Mayhew’s always appreciated the beautiful view of Seneca Lake from the spa window of her family’s hotel. But the view improves dramatically when a hot stranger runs across the grounds—shirtless. He’s the first man to kickstart her hormones in the three years since she lost her parents, and she doesn’t even know his name.

Graydon Locke’s on his umpteenth undercover assignment. The routine’s always the same: assess a business, recommend it for closure, then roll out before anyone discovers his decisions impact hundreds of lives. He’s always believed nothing good comes out of small towns. Why would this one be different? Then he makes two classic rookie mistakes—falling for the sweet, sexy girl who owns the very business he’s on the verge of axing. And letting the town’s residents get involved in both his life, and his relationship with Ella.

Ella’s the best thing to ever happen to Gray, but he’s lied to her from the start. If he pulls the plug on Mayhew Manor, the entire town may crumble. Ella couldn’t save her parents, but it’s up to her to save their hotel. Even if that means turning her back on true love.

REVIEW:
This is a sweet story about finding love in unexpected places. Ella really comes into her own in this story. Seems she has had to grow up so fast and yet allows everyone else to make her decisions for her. But Gray opens up a part of Ella that she has been missing and she really grows into the woman she should be. Gray starts out lying about so much it is hard to imagine he will be forgiven but he does a bunch of sweet things so he redeems himself not only in the towns eyes but the readers as well.

The problem? The connection of Ella and Gray seems to go hot and cold. Gray seems sweet at some points and Ella seems taken and then they have almost a bickering feel to them. When they connected the story was sweet and really good but other times it seemed off and almost forced. But as with all (ok most) romances it has a happy ending the Gray does a little bit of groveling so the reader can enjoy them together.

I look forward to reading Ward and Piper’s story. There most certainly is one that and it will be a doozy.

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts This was a quick read yet good read. I found myself drawn into this world from the get go. I mean waking up not knowing where you are or why you are chained to the wall? Who wouldn’t want to know the answers. But as the story went on I kept wondering who was behind everything.
So while this was a short read I did enjoy it. If you are a fan of Ms. Showalter and did not read this story when it was included in the anthology The Bodyguard. I would suggest picking up a copy Temptation in Shadow.
I would like to know if Rowan is going to be getting a story. He is such a charmer : D

The brooding customer who seems to show up each time she’s in need is an enigma, and yet she’s drawn to him in a way she’s never experienced before. But he has his own secrets, and Zoe has to ask herself—if Caleb is truly her happily ever after, in Hunger for You by A.C. Arthur.

REVIEW:
Something keeps bringing me back to this series even though I have no idea why. The characters are ok and the story sort of interesting but somehow I see the story available and I want to read it. While the books all seem to have a YA feel they are still interesting.

Caleb is such a broken soul and really Zoe is too so they have a familiarity as well as a connection. There is a similar theme through all the book just with different brothers so it is pretty obvious what will happen but still I find myself reading it.

Is it the best shifter series out there? No (especially since we never really see any of them shift). Is it the worst? Of course not. But what the heck you will probably enjoy it like I do.

Kimberly reviews Too Much by Lea Griffith

Too MuchTITLE: Too Much
SERIES #: All or Nothing #1
CHARACTERS: Daly & Jeremiah
AUTHOR: Lea Griffith
PUBLICATION DATE: 06/10/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Jeremiah Copeland and Daly Edwards have a history. Even though he grew up a criminal struggling to care for two younger siblings, and she’s the pampered daughter of a power-hungry senator, they formed a bond that nothing could break. Only a lack of trust ripped them apart.

Seven years later, Daly has reason to believe that Jeremiah’s brother is in trouble. She reaches out to Jeremiah the only way she knows how: at his BDSM club, The Underground. But one look ignites a heat she thought had cooled forever. As Jeremiah takes control of her body once again, Daly quickly loses control of her carefully rebuilt world. Too much has never been enough between them, and as danger swirls in the shadows, Jeremiah forces Daly to recognize what has never changed: She still loves him. His command is that she return her heart—and he will make her obey.

REVIEW:
So I have a bunch to say about this book. Some good. Most not so good. First the good. The story is engrossing. I seemed to want to read page after page. The characters were well formed and seemed to deserve to be together. The background story was interesting and while I had it figured out it did take a while. The sex was fine if you enjoy erotica. If not this is not for you. There is not much in the BDSM way of sex but there is a bunch of D/s sex where Jeremiah takes complete control. It is fine for erotica.

Now the not so good. First Jeremiah is mean and dominating but not in a good way. He just seems to be heartless I guess is the best word. While he says his whole life is Daly he rarely has a soft time with her. Yes as the book went on there were a couple of times here or there where he would love her and not, umm, you know. His calling Daly “little sub” all the time was so condescending that it drove me nuts. Everything is about him. She walked away, she broke his heart, she did this and she did that. he might be a Dom but he is no alpha.

Now, Daly is a bit of a pushover. She is the bad person by walking away when Jeremiah was doing illegal things? How did he become the victim? Ok we find out things later but most of the book is how he was a criminal. She knows the lifestyle so this isn’t a story where he introduces her to the D/s way of life so that was a bit refreshing but the love/hate relationship between the two of them is “Too Much” sometimes (see the word play there?). And I was so tired of the same things being written over and over. Ok we know she walked away and that they belong to each other, blah blah blah. The book could have been cut by 50+ pages if the same sentences hadn’t been used “Too Much” (yeah I did it again).

The not so good out numbers the good but then again if you enjoy erotica and a domineering man (not just a dominate man) then you will probably enjoy this one. As for me it was just ok. Disclaimer:

REVIEW:
Lay Me Down was the 2nd novella in Erin Kellison’s new Reveler series was pretty good. I think that I enjoyed this one a little better than the first novella. I am still struggling a little with the world. There seems to be a lot going on in such a short period of time and everything was a little rushed.
But again I believe I will give book 3 a try and see if it is working for me.

REVIEW:
This was a quick read Darkness Falls was a very interesting read and world for me. I have not really decided if I am in love with this world yet or not. This first novella in the Reveler series was a little hard for me to follow and understand. But seeing as this was the first book the world building is important . Therefore I do plan to read the next novella and see if this series is really for me.

Kelly reviews Animal Attraction by Paige Tyler

Animal AttractionTITLE: Animal Attraction
SERIES #: Alaskan Werewolf #1
CHARACTERS: Hunter McCall & Eliza Bradley
AUTHOR: Paige Tyler
PUBLICATION DATE: Re-release
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Frustrated when none of the real newspapers will hire her as a reporter, Eliza Bradley takes the only job she can get – at a paranormal magazine. Her first assignment takes her to Fairbanks, Alaska to investigate the possibility that a werewolf has killed two local hikers.
Eliza forgets about the story, however, when she meets Hunter McCall, a local college professor and an expert on wolves. The man is an absolute hunk, and she finds herself spending more time in his bed than worrying about werewolves. That is, until she finds out that Hunter isn’t just an animal in the sack, he’s an animal out of it, too – of the werewolf variety! Talk about a complicated relationship!

But Eliza can’t dwell on Hunter’s little shapeshifting issues. There’s another werewolf out there with a taste for human blood, and she and Hunter are the only ones who can stop him.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Animal Attraction the re-release of Paige Tyler’s first book in her Alaskan Werewolf series.

Being unemployed sucks. That is how Eliza ends up finding herself in the middle of Alaska trying to track down a killer werewolf. Of course Eliza doesn’t believe in such things which makes working for a Paranormal newspaper a little hard. But once she is on the trail Eliza realized that there is much more to this story then just the paranormal. So with the help of the hunky professor and wolf expert Hunter McCall, Eliza is going to solve this case even if it kills her.

I enjoyed this book. I really like how Eliza’s mind worked and her openness to the paranormal world. And Hunter was just great. I really enjoyed the first interaction with Hunter and Eliza. Who knew ketchup could lead to true love. What to know what I am talking about? You need to pick up a copy of Animal Attraction and find out for yourself.

Natasha reviews Knight Of Love by Catherine LaRoche

Knight OF LoveTITLE: Knight of Love
CHARACTERS: Lenora & Wolfram
AUTHOR: Catherine LaRoche
PUBLICATION DATE: 6/9/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In this saucy romance, an English lady turns the damsel-in-distress tale on its head as she escapes her malicious fiancé and fights for both her life and that of the lustful rebel that has become her protector.

Lady Lenora Trevelyan, a naïve yet stubborn young lady born to the highest noble houses of England and Germany, finds herself betrothed to the brutal Prince Kurt von Rotenburg-Gruselstadt cruelly. But after she is cruelly bruised and flogged by her fiancé, she decides to take the reins of her fate. In the midst of a German revolution, Lenora escapes Kurt’s iron fist and embarks home to England. She quickly finds herself in the hands of a rebel group and their robust, gentle, and handsome leader, Wolfram von Wolfsbach und Ravensworth, the English Earl of Ravensworth.

Lenora struggles to deny the passion she feels towards the frustratingly chivalrous Earl but her desire for him continues to bloom. Wolfram hungers nothing other than to fight for democracy and civil rights in uniting Germany and to protect what he assumes is his damsel in distress. Through nights of immeasurable pleasure, Lenora and Wolfram learn that their passion is no match for the revolutionary chaos that ensues. And when Lenora discovers that her protector’s life is threatened, she must risk everything to save her Knight of Love.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Wow, so many things going through my mind about this book. I still can’t decide on my feelings, so I’ll just concede to them all. I fell in love with Lenora very early on in the book when in she said, “…don’t let me fall. I don’t want them to see me fall.” I knew instantly that this was an incredibly strong character who would never be swayed by anyone else save herself. I wish I’d known how true that really was! Lenora did not pull any punches, especially when it came to Wolfram! That naïve, sweet, hopeful man. He did not understand what he was getting into when she walked into his life. I will say, a pretty traumatic event happened to cement these two together and I found it VERY difficult to get past that throughout the book. I was convinced I would not be able to look past this to let myself enjoy the book. However, Wolfram and Lenora turned things around for each other and I was pleased with the outcome of this book. I’d definitely read more by this author!

Blog Tour & Review: 100 Proof Stud by A.J. Lape

100 proof stud large banner 640

Good versus Evil

by A.J. Lape

Who I decide to make a villain/hero in my novels is a very organic thing for me–not in the nuts and granola, Birkenstock sense (hehehee)–but it’s all about making changes and adjustments as you go.  Like all writers, I go into my head and let the characters take over.  Sometimes I get afraid of what they say, and then I get afraid to write it down, and at times I wonder, Is it okay to print what these people do because some of it is straight-up horror show and so soulless it’s like Dante’s outer circle. I guess it comes down to how comfortable with good, right?  But sometimes you don’t know what “good” truly is until you compare it to its polar opposite.

I have one character that I write, Ivy Morrison, who is classic mean-girl–from her all-white, in-your-face ensemble, to a rockin’ body, and a face that looks like Barbie.  Poison Ivy was hard for me in the beginning.  I didn’t want her to throw mean barbs at Darcy or her friends because I wanted to jump on the page and punch her lights out myself.  But at the end of the day, I thought, pretty girl + mean girl x teen jealousy = high school.  I couldn’t get around diving into the meanies of the meanies and show a true depiction of what high school life can be like without letting Ivy be, er, poison.

The same thing goes for my villains.  Once it is revealed to me in the writing process what a character is like, then the crime sort of goes hand in hand.  Oftentimes I will write a character one way, and then in the back of my mind I’ll hear this little voice that says, He or she may do bad things, but there’s more to this character than meets the eye.  When that happens, the backstory will unfold, and I will decide how much I will tell the reader in that particular book.  Why?  Because I may want to bring that character back, give them a larger part, or maybe even redeem them.  Or perhaps they will always be victim of their flaws and just can’t get out of their own way.  Whatever the case, when you are writing, you have to embrace “the truth.”  You can’t sugarcoat a personality–or put lipstick on a pig–and have a reader walk away with a believable character.  The pig will still be the pig.

About the Author:

headshotA. J. Lape’s Darcy Walker Series broke into the Top 50 books in Teens Literature & Fiction within 36 hours of its release. It has spent numerous weeks in the Top 100 in Mystery Series and Teens, Mysteries & Thrillers Categories as well as being one of the Top Rated in its genre. A self-proclaimed neurotic and troublemaker at heart, a perfect day for A. J. consists of writing, watching her kids play sports, drinking Coke, then lounging in her pajamas by 8PM.

She lives in Cincinnati with her husband, two feministic daughters, an ADD dog, a spoiled hamster, and an unapologetic and unrepentant addiction to Coca-Cola, with a lifelong love affair with bacon.  She studied English, Journalism, and Political Science at Morehead State University and left the business world when her daughters were born.  Her love for suspense and a good story was born from watching Mystery Science Theater with her sister during childhood.  That and any B movie with comedic undertones they could get their hands on.

When she’s not riding that razor-thin line between creativity and insanity, she  likes to read, watch too much cable TV, or cheer like a banshee at her daughters’ sporting events. She’s a huge hometown sports fan and loves to watch the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds whenever she can.

Jennifer’s Review of 100 Proof Stud

Review (3.75 Stars): Darcy was an interesting character and this is one of the few young adult mystery series that I have read so far.  She was a wise-cracking young heroine who always ended up in the middle of trouble and I was amazed at some of the scenarios that she found herself in. Reminded quite a bit of the Stephanie Plum series. There is definitely a lot of humor in this book but I recommend reading the first book, Grade A Stupid, to get acquainted with Darcy and the people in her life before starting 100 Proof Stud. Fun series that will have you laughing out loud until the very end.

Kelly reviews Deeper Than Need by Shiloh Walker

Deeper Than NeedTITLE: Deeper Than Need
SERIES #: Secrets & Shadows #1
CHARACTERS: Noah Benningfield & Trinity Ewing
AUTHOR: Shiloh Walker
PUBLICATION DATE: June 3, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Trinity Ewing—she’s new in Madison, and her one goal is to put her old life behind her. She’s made mistakes. A lot of them. She’s done everything short of selling herself to stay alive and provide for her son. Now she’s just looking for a place to put down roots and call home. The old ramshackle house on the banks of the Ohio River seem to be the perfect place. It needs work—a lot of it.

A former minister, Noah Benningfield now works as a carpenter. He hasn’t entirely lost his faith, but he has lost himself. Which is exactly how he likes it. He doesn’t want to find himself, because then he’d have to look at the many ways he failed. Working with his hands is easier. Or so he thinks. He hasn’t ever had a job where he uncovers a skeleton, though. Not until now.

He can’t help but wonder…are these the remains of Lana, the girl he’d loved in high school? Losing her had all but destroyed his life back then, a life he has only now pieced together. Even as he deals with the turmoil of that, there’s a new turmoil, one caused by Trinity—she’s everything he won’t let himself have, and everything he realizes he wants.

Life becomes even more complicated when a ghost from the past blows back into town… Bethany Sutter—one of the last people to see Lana alive all those years ago.

REVIEW:
3.25 Hearts Deeper Than Need is the first full length novel in Shiloh Walker’s new Secrets & Shadow’s series. Just like the pre-quel novella’s, Deeper Than Need is shrouded in mystery and a lot of unanswered questions. Most of those questions revolve around one night. A night that changed the lives of so many people. A night that left so many questions. But unlike the novella’s I didn’t find myself as drawn to these two characters.

Noah & Trinity are thrown together under terrible circumstances. Yet, they find a way to cope. They both have demons from their pasts that they are ashamed of. Yet, the have learned to live again. The biggest questions is will the ghosts of the past keep them apart or bring them closer together.

This was a good story and Shiloh does a great job of keeping you guessing as to the why’s, who’s, and how’s. I just didn’t feel the connection to Noah that I would have liked. I am not sure what it was, because Noah is a good guy. But other then that this was a good read. If you are suspense fan you will enjoy this book .

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

When the Cavanaugh brothers return home for their father’s funeral, they discover unexpected evidence of the old man’s surprising double life—a son named Blue, who wants the Triple C Ranch as much as they do. The eldest son, Deacon, a wealthy businessman who couldn’t wait to leave the ranch and move on with his life, is looking to use his powerful connections to stop Blue at any cost. He never expected the ranch’s forewoman, Mackenzie Byrd, to get in his way.

Mac knows Deacon means to destroy the ranch and therefore destroy her livelihood. But as the two battle for control, their attraction builds. Now Deacon is faced with the choice of a lifetime: Take down the Triple C to feed his need for revenge, or embrace the love of the one person who has broken down every barrier to his heart.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Full disclosure at 16% in to the book I really really really dislike Deacon Cavanaugh. He is a total pain in the arse. But there is so much more to Deacon then meets the eye. He may be a cold-heart, take no prisoners business man but deep down he is still a cowboy at heart. It did take the whole book for Deacon to win me over. And it was most definitely a wild ride. Mackenzie really makes him work for both her forgiveness and love.

Mac is one tough chick. She may have suffered just as much as the Cavanaugh family, but she was able to find the silver lining in the storm that she called her childhood. But all that changed when Everett passed and now Mac is fight to keep the only thing she knows. Her home.

This was a good beginning to Laura Wright’s new series. As I said before Deacon really had to work hard to win me over. And I am still not sure I am totally in love with him. But his little brothers that might be a different story. I am very much looking forward to learn more about James & Cole.
