Natasha reviews Burn by Julianna Baggott

BurnTITLE: Burn
SERIES #: Pure #3
CHARACTERS: Pressia, Partridge, Bradwell, Lyda & El Capitan
AUTHOR: Julianna Baggott
PUBLICATION DATE: 2/4/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Inside the Dome, Partridge has taken his father’s place as leader of the Pures. His struggle has led him here, intent upon bringing down the Dome from the inside, with the help of a secret resistance force. But things are not as simple from his new position of power and he finds himself tempted by his father’s words: perhaps if the world is to survive it needs the Dome – and Partridge – to rule it…

As Partridge’s resolve weakens, Pressia and Bradwell continue piecing together the clues left to them from the time before the Detonations. It is their hope that they will be able to heal the Wretches, and free them from their monstrous fusings and the Dome’s oppression once and for all. But everything depends, too, on Partridge. Separated by distance and history, can they still trust their friend and ally? Or is the world doomed to an eternity of war and hardship?

REVIEW: Unfortunately this book didn’t have as strong an ending as I’d hoped when I began the series. The characters have gone through so many trials and tests throughout the series and have drastically changed from who they began as. That can be a good thing and a bad thing. I like the fact that Julianna had the characters evolving in a way that gave them more complexity, but I do think she drastically strayed from the core of the characters as I had perceived them to be. I was disappointed by the way things evolved and eventually ended. I like when authors allow readers to imagine for themselves what goes on with the characters once the book ends, but this ending seemed quite lackluster and rushed. After three books of build up it just ended and there is a lot left unanswered. Though I’m not thrilled with how the trilogy concluded I am happy I read it.

Kimberly reviews Vampire Trouble by Sara Humphreys

Vampire TroubleTITLE: Vampire Trouble
SERIES #: Dead In The City #2
CHARACTERS: Maya & Shane
AUTHOR: Sara Humphreys
PUBLICATION DATE: 07/01/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Shane Quesada, a four-century old vampire sentry, is known for cold, unemotional precision when hunting rogue vampires.
Maya Robertson is a youngling vampire who will not be controlled—and to prove it, she rejects Shane’s protection—only to find herself in over her head with an alpha werewolf.
Soon, a war between the coven and the werewolf clan ignites, and Maya and Shane flee to Louisiana, where their passion for each other grows—as does Maya’s power. When she finds herself at the center of the conflict, will she finally trust Shane with her life—and her heart?

REVIEW:
I had a hard time getting into this book. I never really warmed up to Maya. While I realize she is a young vampire she is just plain young. She acts like a spoiled brat and while I hoped that was just in the beginning I never got over the feeling that she is just immature and it bugged me. Shane is fine but too indulgent if you ask me.

The story is just too wordy. Also a lot of liberties were taken in the vampire lore. While was kind of interesting but also a little off putting since being a fan of the genre I am used to there being certain “rules” to the vampire world and this changes that and some so drastically that it is a bit odd. This was just off for me but that being said it still held my attention and I wanted to know what was going to happen.

Kimberly reviews Fake It by Jennifer Chance

Fake itTITLE: Fake It
SERIES #: Rule Breakers #2
CHARACTERS: Anna & Jake
AUTHOR: Jennifer Chance
PUBLICATION DATE: 07/01/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
New grad Anna Richardson works hard—so hard that she’s given up having a romantic life. Anna has even convinced her friends that she’s dating an amazing guy—who they’ve simply never met. But now Anna has a wedding to attend and needs to produce the hottie she’s been lying about for the past six months. Enter Jake Flynn, her infuriating, motorcycle-riding, jaw-droppingly gorgeous neighbor, who’s more than willing to fake it for a weekend. In fact, Jake won’t be satisfied until things get real.

Though Jake is only playing the role of adoring boyfriend, he’s starting to feel the heat, and judging by Anna’s sweet blush, so is she. Letting chemistry this intense go to waste would be a real shame. Soon, though, the thin line between fantasy and reality fades. Jake may not be what every buttoned-up fast-tracker wants, but he’s sure as hell what Anna needs. And if she takes a ride with him, their adventure never has to end.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts A little cliche’ but worth the read. Any fan of the romance genre has read this story before. Girl needs a date for a friends wedding, she finds a guy to fake it for the weekend and they fall in love. And while this is the same scenario it is a cute story. Jake is an adorable guy who really is the bad boy with a heart of gold. I think the author was trying to write him as more of a bad boy then it actually turned out because I am not sure we say any bad at all in him. Anna is a workaholic who just wants to make sure all is set in her world correctly and Jake blows that out of the water.

I enjoyed the story. It was a bit wordy but was still a good read.

Kimberly & Jennifer review The Heart’s Game by Crista McHugh

hearts gameTITLE: The Heart’s Game
SERIES #: Kelly Brothers #4
CHARACTERS: Jenny & Dan
AUTHOR: Crista McHugh
PUBLICATION DATE: 07/07/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
What happens at Comic-Con, stays at Comic-Con…
Robotics engineer Jenny Nguyen has given up on finding Mr. Right. So when her brother and his husband approach her to act as surrogate for their child, she sees it as her only chance to have a child and accepts. One week after she initiates the process, however, she meets a man who gets her heart pumping for all the right reasons and gives into the temptation. When the test turns positive, she’s believes she can’t handle both the pregnancy and dating, but she underestimates how persistent a Daniel Kelly can be.
When surgeon and gamer-geek Dan meets a pretty woman dressed as a Sailor Scout at Comic-Con, a roll of his lucky 20-sided die tells him he should take a gamble on her. One night of passion leaves him longing for more, but Jenny’s refusal to return his calls afterward leaves him wondering if the attraction was one-sided. An accidental discovery of her pregnancy has him convinced the baby is his, and he’ll stop at nothing to win her heart.

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
3 Hearts Three words.. Cheesy but cute. This story is so cheesy honestly there is no other word for it but at the same time sweet. The story is pretty cliche’… she is pregnant already and he falls for her anyway… but there are a few differences like it is for her gay brother, etc. The Comic-Con part is a big deal. There are so many references to characters that I have no idea about it was distracting but that is my issue not the authors since that is part of the synopsis.

If you are a geek you will probably enjoy this story.

JENNIFER’S REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts I love that first line “What happens at Comic-Con, stays at Comic-Con..”and that is perfect for both Jenny and Dan whose chance meeting leads to one night of passion at SDCC. I liked Jenny a lot because she was smart, funny and was a self proclaimed geek. I think that Jenny did an admirable thing by being the surrogate for her brother and his partner, knowing that this would cause problems with her family. Jenny’s mom reminded me a lot of my mom when she wanted Jenny to be more conservative and “girly” so she could find herself a husband “before she was too old.”
Dan couldn’t forget his one night with Jenny at SDCC and was surprised to find that they had a mutual friend back home in Washington. He found out about her pregnancy and just assumed that the child was his and I wanted to hit him over the head for not having a discussion about it before getting into a relationship with Jenny. Miscommunication and the omission of vital details affected their relationship and caused heartbreak that could have been avoided if Jenny had just told Dan the truth about her pregnancy.
The Heart’s Game is the fourth book in the Kelly Brothers series and I’m beginning to love this family more and more. Ms. McHugh has created a delightful romance with The Heart’s Game and I can’t wait to read more from this talented author.

Kimberly reviews Never Been Kissed by Molly O’Keefe

Never Been KissedTITLE: Never Been Kissed
SERIES #: Boys Of Bishop #2
CHARACTERS: Ashley & Brody
AUTHOR: Molly O’Keefe
PUBLICATION DATE: 07/01/14
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
As the daughter of a wealthy politician, Ashley Montgomery has had enough of her parents’ expectations for her future and is going her own way, volunteering to work at a refugee camp in Africa. But her act of charity turns dangerous when she takes a boat trip and is abducted by Somali pirates. Enter Brody Baxter, who was a bodyguard for the Montgomery family ten years ago and doesn’t think twice about coming to Ashley’s rescue. Handsome and tough, Brody has always done what needed to be done. So he swoops in, saves Ashley, and brings her to a place where she can rest and recuperate without the glare of the press and her demanding family: Brody’s small hometown of Bishop, Arkansas. But Ashley soon realizes that she’s not the only one in need of healing.
Holed up with Ashley in a tiny apartment over his brother’s bar in Bishop, Brody is tempted and torn in ways he never anticipated. Beautiful Ashley, vibrant despite her ordeal, fearless enough to love him beyond his wall of self-punishment, is now determined to save him. But with a little faith and a lot of love, they just may find happiness in each others’ arms.

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts It took a while but I finally enjoyed this story. The problem is Brody is a hard guy to like especially in the beginning. As we get to know him we understand why but until that time comes it is so hard to want him to have his happy ending. Ashley is so needy that she is hard to like as well. She is written to be so independent but then she hangs all over Brody like a lovesick girl and it gets annoying. Now all that being said once they finally connect they are a fun couple and they both change and become enjoyable.
I enjoyed the story (eventually) but I wonder where the authors head was while writing this. Everyone has such a chip on their shoulders and no one is just happy being themselves.
Finally getting to the HEA was worth it. I am actually looking forward to Shelby’s story which is next. I wanted her story after reading the first in the series. I can’t wait to see who can bring Shelby back into the world.

Blog Tour & Review: Maple Mayhem by Jessie Crockett

9780425260203_medium_Maple_Mayhem

Guest Post

by Jessie Crockett

When I go to author talks and book signings some of the questions I am often asked are why I write mysteries (because I love to read them) or where I get my ideas (the grocer). People want to know about my work habits (erratic) or the process of getting published (grueling). I’ve even been asked about the sorts of snacks I eat while working away on a tight deadline (baby carrots).

Something I have never been asked is why I set my books in tiny towns in New Hampshire.  Granted, since most of my events are held in New England, the people attending the talk have no reason to ask such a question.  They know why New Hampshire is a great setting for a mystery series.

People who live here know New Hampshire might be worth choosing just on account of the natural beauty of the mountains, lakes and coastline.  There are also the man-made features like charming villages filled with historic buildings, the stone walls zig-zagging through the woods and the delightful surprise of covered bridges.

The weather in here also supports mysterious doings as anyone who has ever survived a winter in New England can tell you.  After months on end of being cooped up with the family it is easy to imagine old arguments becoming dangerous.  Treacherously icy roads provide ample opportunity to fake fatal accidents.  Even mud season and black flies can push upstanding citizens over the edge.  After all, with so many acres of undeveloped land there are plenty of places to hide a body, at least once the ground thaws out.

New Hampshire is full of people who inspire great characters too.  It’s easy to imagine all that independent spirit and stoicism along with a heaping helping of forthrightness and cantankerousness giving rise to all sorts of criminal possibilities.

There’s also the fact that the past is always present in New Hampshire.  A walk in the woods is likely to reveal a tumbled down sugarhouse or cellar hole.  A leisurely drive on a sunny afternoon might easily take you past an overgrown cemetery hidden beneath a stand of maples.  But along with all the nostalgia and charm there is also the darker side of the past.  Behind the front door of any antique cape long memories, old grudges, family secrets and unforgiven debts might just be lurking.  The contrast between the white picket fences and skeletons in the closets makes for fertile soil for mystery writers as well as readers.

If you have the opportunity to visit New Hampshire in person or as an armchair traveller, I think you’ll agree it is the perfect spot for sightseeing, antiquing and even the occasional mystery.

In Sugar Grove, New Hampshire, people are serious about their maple syrup—especially Dani Greene, whose family owns the Greener Pastures sugarhouse.  But when murder disrupts the small-town sweetness, Dani pores over clues to draw out a killer…

Despite being a fourth-generation syrup maker, Dani isn’t stuck in the past. She’s starting a new agricultural cooperative that reduces costs for every syrup producer who joins. Everyone considers it a sweet deal except the die-hard curmudgeon Frank Lemieux—and when a saboteur starts targeting supporters, everyone suspects Frank.

But it turns out they’re barking up the wrong tree when Dani finds Frank murdered in his own sugarhouse. As the sabotage continues, she realizes that Frank was framed. With the help of her family, and a handsome official from the Fish and Game Department, Dani must catch the killer before another syrup maker kicks the bucket.

Jennifer’s Review of Maple Mayhem

Review (3.5 Stars): The interesting thing about these mysteries was that Dani was from a family of maple syrup makers, which I haven’t seen before in any other cozy mysteries.  This is the second book in the Sugar Grove Mystery series and in this book, Dani is on the hunt to find the killer of a cantankerous syrup maker. Frank Lemieux has been a thorn in Dani’s side for quite sometime and she is shocked to find that he has been murdered.  What’s worse is that someone is also framing the victim for vandalizing property of the people that are joining Dani’s new co-op and Dani must get to the bottom of this before it is too late.

I like Dani and I think that she is an adorable character who is a little spitfire when she is on a mission. I love her family and the other crazy residents that make Sugar Grove so interesting.  My only problem with this book was the pacing of the story.  It just felt that it was taking a long time to get the murder investigation going and because of that I had a hard time becoming invested in the story. I’ve enjoyed Ms. Crockett’s first book, Drizzled with Death and I was a little sad that Maple Mayhem didn’t grab me like her first Sugar Grove mystery.  I’m looking forward to her next mystery because I do like these characters and want to see what happens in Dani’s life, but this mystery was just okay for me.

Kelly reviews Extreme Measures by Elisabeth Naughton

AUTHOR: Elisabeth Naughton
PUBLICATION DATE: July 8, 2014

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Being prepared for any scenario is the trademark of any good CIA operative, and Eve Wolfe is one of the best. But when her latest mission literally explodes in her face, she wakes up labeled a traitor and—even more surprising—in the custody of elite Aegis Security operative and ex-lover Zane Archer. Although she still secretly has feelings for Zane, he’s now demanding the one thing that she can’t give him: the truth.

Now someone has not only sabotaged Aegis but also turned an American city into a war zone, and all signs point to Eve. Zane needs answers that can come only from Eve’s still-tempting lips, and he finally has the elusive operative right where he wants her—at his mercy.

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts Zane has never forgotten or forgiving the person who almost killed him in an ambush. For over a year he has been tracking and plan what he would do when he finally caught up with this person. Only one problem. The person he is after is also the person he is in love with. And finding her out cold from an explosion is not what he had in mind.
What was suppose to be a simple give me the truth and walk away session with Eve has turned into a run for our life’s mission. Now the questions is who is setting them up? And what the heck does it have to do with Eve and Zane specifically?

Good first full length novel in Ms. Naughton’s Aegis Security series. Lots of action, lot of who do you trust and yes some romance. I really liked Zane & Eve. They are so well fitted together. I loved the side story of involving Eve’s sister Olivia. I am very much looking forward to what is next in this series. I am hoping for Miller and Olivia. Although I would love to see who is going to take down Ryder. 🙂

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

Brogan can’t do that. Or so he thinks. Lacey and Lou have other plans, a hot, torrid night, some hot, sexy pictures… Lacey is determined to show Brogan a new way of seeing things

REVIEW:
Lacey has finally come to the conclusion that the man she is in love with will never love her back. So in order to try to get over him she takes off. Right into the arms of one of her best friends and former lovers. Only problem is that Brogan does not want to let her go. Even if that means having to play Lacey’s game.

This was a dirty little diddie of a novella. So if you like your novella’s quick, dirty and a happy ending you should pick up a copy of Lacey’s game.

Kelly reviews Fireborn by Keri Arthur

firebornTITLE: Fireborn
SERIES #: Souls of Fire #1
CHARACTERS: Emberly Pearson
AUTHOR: Keri Arthur
PUBLICATION DATE: July 1, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
From New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur comes a brand new series featuring heroine Emberly Pearson—a phoenix capable of taking on human form, and cursed with the ability to foresee death…

Emberly has spent a good number of her many lives trying to save humans. So when her prophetic dreams reveal the death of Sam, a man she once loved, she does everything in her power to prevent that from happening. But in saving his life, she gets more than she bargained for.

Sam is working undercover for the Paranormal Investigations Team, and those who are trying to murder him are actually humans infected by a plague-like virus, the Crimson Death—a by-product of a failed government experiment that attempted to identify the enzymes that make vampires immortal. Now, all those infected must be eliminated.

But when Emberly’s boss is murdered and his irreplaceable research stolen, she needs to find the guilty party before she goes down in flames

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This was a good first book in Keri’s new Souls of Fire series. I really liked Emberly. Who could not like a Phoenix? But Emberly has a very complicated life that just keeps getting more and more complicated by the page. I won’t tell you a lot because you need to read for yourself but let’s say Emberly has a soul mate that she is not in love with. And like any good Keri Arthur book Emberly has a very interesting sex life.

There is a lot going on in this first book. I am not totally wild about the Urban Fantasy genre mostly because I really like my HEA at the end of each book. But Fireborn was still a good read and I am looking forward to where Keri is going to take this cast of characters.

Kimberly reviews Better Homes and Hauntings by Molly Harper

better homesTITLE: Better Homes and Hauntings
CHARACTERS: Nina & Deacon
AUTHOR: Molly Harper
PUBLICATION DATE: 06/24/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate—he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in nineteenth-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo.”

But Nina shows no signs of being scared away, even as she experiences some unnerving apparitions herself. And as the two of them work closely together to restore the mansion’s faded glory, Deacon realizes that he’s found someone who doesn’t seem to like his fortune more than himself—while Nina may have finally found the one man she can trust with her bruised and battered heart.

But something on the island doesn’t believe in true love…and if Nina and Deacon can’t figure out how to put these angry spirits to rest, their own love doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance.

REVIEW:

3.25 Hearts I am a little on the fence about this story. It seemed like the characters connected at some points and didn’t at others. Sometimes the characters acted so cute you couldn’t help but smile then there was nothing. I gave it a little over 3 hearts/stars because for the most part I enjoyed it.

Having just been to the Baltimore I could picture the estate and loved having the Whitney’s compared to the Vanderbilts. I think this is the type of place (if it was real) that would have paranormal investigators there all the time and how fun that it was set on its own island. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough with the ghosts.

It is hard for me to say anything that was great or horrible because it just fit right in the middle the whole way.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

And Pressia, armed only with a mysterious Black Box containing a set of cryptic clues, must travel to the very ends of the earth, to a place where no map can guide her. If they succeed, the world will be saved. But should they fail, humankind will pay a terrible price . .

REVIEW: The first book in this series – Pure – was so good that I had really high expectations for the next book in this series. Unfortunately it wasn’t as good as I’d hoped it would be. There was a lot going on in this installment, but it seemed to be drawn out for longer than necessary. The characters were harder to like in this book based on decisions and lack of decisions made throughout. I listened to this book on audio, and the narrator for Lyda makes her sound like a robot which is hard to ignore. It alters the way I think of Lyda and her demeanor. As with book one there is a lot of the story that is hard to believe if you think about the science involved with bombings and the world after, but once you give yourself over to the fiction aspect of it all you forget about believability and just enjoy this authors version of events. The ending was shocking and intense. I’ll continue on to book three to see how the story resolves. Hopefully it will offer a little more than this section of the story.

Kimberly reviews The Tea Shop On Lavender Lane by Sheila Roberts

The Tea Shop on LLTITLE: The Tea Shop On Lavender Lane
SERIES #: Life In Icicle Falls #5
CHARACTERS: Bailey/Todd/Cecily/Luke
AUTHOR: Sheila Roberts
PUBLICATION DATE: 06/24/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
After a fake food poisoning incident in L.A., Bailey Sterling’s dreams of becoming a caterer to the stars collapse faster than a soufflé. Now Bailey’s face is in all the gossip rags and her business is in ruins. But the Sterling women close ranks and bring her back to Icicle Falls, where she’ll stay with her sister Cecily.

All goes well between the sisters until Bailey comes up with a new business idea—a tea shop on a charming street called Lavender Lane. She’s going into partnership with Todd Black, who—it turns out—is the man Cecily’s started dating. It looks to Cecily as if there’s more than tea brewing in that cute little shop. And she’s not pleased.

Wait! Isn’t Cecily seeing Luke Goodman? He’s a widower with an adorable little girl, and yes, Cecily does care about him. But Todd’s the one who sends her zing-o-meter off the charts. So now what? Should you have to choose between your sister and the man you love (or think you love)?

REVIEW:
I had a hard time with this story. Maybe because it was about 4 people and not just a couple or maybe because it actually had a harshness to it. I am really not sure but I just didn’t enjoy it too much. While most of it was about Cecily and Todd with a bit of Luke thrown in none of the characters seemed to have much chemistry. And then Bailey came in and while she does have chemistry with Todd it seemed wrong to have her interested in her sisters boyfriend.

There wasn’t enough about Cecily and Luke if you ask me. And I honestly wondered where Eric fit into the story. Just so many people thrown into this mix and it just never seemed to connect with any couple.
