Jennifer’s Review of Murder in the Arboretum

Review (3.5 Stars): I love mysteries that take place on a college campus and Murder in the Arboretum was an intriguing whodunnit that definitely surprised me.  There is another murder on the Cold Creek College campus and Sheridan Hendley is out to find a killer to protect an innocent man from going to jail.  While Sheridan is on a race against the clock to find clues, someone knows she is on their trail and she may soon become their next victim.

Murder in the Arboretum was a fast-paced mystery that just seemed to grab you from the very beginning.  This is the second book in the series and I would recommend reading the first one before this one just so you are more familiar with the characters.  I’m hooked and looking forward to reading more from this author.

Kelly & Kimberly review Hungry Like The Wolf by Paige Tyler

hungry like the wolfTITLE: Hungry Like the Wolf
SERIES #: SWAT #1
CHARACTERS: Gage Dixon & Mackenzie Stone
AUTHOR: Paige Tyler
PUBLICATION DATE: January 6, 2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
INTRODUCING SWAT: SPECIAL WOLF ALPHA TEAM
They’re tight
They’re on target
They’re as alpha as men can get.

The Dallas SWAT team is hiding one helluva secret . . . they’re a pack of wolf shifters.

The team of elite sharpshooters is ultra-secretive—and also the darlings of Dallas. This doesn’t sit well with investigative journalist Mackenzie Stone. They must be hiding something . . . and she’s determined to find out what.

Keeping Mac at a distance proves impossible for SWAT team commander Gage Dixon. She’s smart, sexy, and makes him feel alive for the first time in years. But she’s getting dangerously close to the truth—and perilously close to his heart.

KELLY’S REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts Mackenzie Stone will do anything for a story. Her motto is “The truth should be told”, even if people get hurt. The story comes first. But Mac will soon learn that sometimes the truth can do more than hurt it can destroy.
Gage Dixon is the leader of the SWAT team. And he always puts his pack first. But when the nosey Ms. Stone butts her way into his life he either has to kick her to the curb and risk her finding out the true. Or pull her in and show her enough to throw her off the scent. Question is which is the lesser of the two evils?
This is going to be a good series I can see it already. I really did enjoy this first book. And like many first books in a series there is a lot of world building and history that needs to be laid out. So at times Hungry Like the Wolf was just a tad bit slow for me. At times I wanted to punt Gage & Mac both. But all in all I liked the story and can’t wait for more of these Wolf’s.

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
3 Hearts I had a hard time with this book. First I really didn’t feel like the characters had chemistry. I wasn’t too fond of the whole journalist thing and her using the team for information. I didn’t enjoy the writing very much and while I think the story had potential it didn’t meet it.

I really never became a fan of Mac’s. She seems cold and unfriendly, just like a stereotypical reporter, but maybe because of the beginning I never warmed up to her. Gage is good. I liked him. And I liked the Pack but just not the story. I didn’t like Mac’s reaction to finding out the info.

I am not sure why this book just didn’t sit well with me but it didn’t I am sorry to say.

Kimberly reviews The Quick And The Undead by Kimberly Raye

Quick and UndeadTITLE: The Quick and The Undead
SERIES #: Tombstone, Texas
CHARACTERS: Riley & Boone
AUTHOR: Kimberly Raye
PUBLICATION DATE: 12/31/14
ORDER LINKS:Amazon|B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Welcome to Tombstone, Texas, where anything is possible, even your wildest fantasy. Once a haven to outlaws, Tombstone is now a tourist town that gives travelers a taste of the old West. What visitors don’t realize, however, is that the super-hot cowboys, gunslingers, and lawmen walking the streets aren’t actors—they’re originals. These ancient vampires claimed Tombstone two centuries ago.

So step right up, folks, and book your trip today! The outlaws of Tombstone will be waiting . . .

Travel blogger Riley Davenport loves her job, travelling to the most exotic places in the world. Even better, it keeps her one step ahead of her stalking ex. The last thing she wants in her life is a strong alpha male. But that’s exactly what she gets when she comes face-to-face with Sheriff Boone Jarrett, a hero right out of her most erotic fantasies.

Boone isn’t just the law in Tombstone, Texas. He’s also an ancient vampire and the target of a crazed killer. He certainly doesn’t have time for romance. But a temporary fling? Now that he can handle.

Unfortunately, their first night together ends in disaster when Riley witnesses a murder. And to protect her, Boone forces her into hiding. Only her “captivity” ends up becoming the realization of her wildest, most carnal fantasies. Still, Riley’s not going to fall for him, at least that’s what she tells herself.

But as she gets to know him—the man and the vampire—she starts to wonder if she can hold out . . .

REVIEW:
This book had so much potential but it just didn’t meet up to it. I wanted to enjoy it. I mean what a great concept about original outlaw cowboys being vampires and now running a vacation spot to save their land. I really like the idea and if the story had been through a revision or two (or three) I think it would have worked.

First the good. The characters are interesting. Riley and Boone have an instant connection that continues throughout the whole book. The relationship between Tag and Belle is adorable and I look forward to hearing more about them. There was a bit of suspense. But I think some of the suspense was dropped without much-ado. I mean we heard so much about Phil and then he never shows up. So much could have happened to add to the story if he had shown up as well as the vampire who was there causing trouble.

Now the bad. The thing that drove me the craziest is how many times things were repeated. I mean you don’t need to tell the reader a half a dozen times that Riley had no childhood because of her father. We got it. Over and over we heard about her ex and how he was. Again we got it. And Boone’s father issues were repeated so many times I wanted to slap and tell him he was a outlaw get over it. And finally the fact that each time a character was mentioned we had to be told what he/she was (gunslinger/thief/etc). Maybe in the beginning but not every time.

I have to say usually at the end of vampire books something happens to the non-vampire causing the vampire to have to turn his/her love and they un-live happily ever after. Well that didn’t happen and it left me hanging. I mean what happens now? Will Riley eventually be turned? Will he only have her a few decades and then he moves on? What? BTW: I will never complain about the typical ending happening ever again.

As I said this book had a lot of potential and I wish it had actually met it.

*EXCERPT*

She tilted her head, setting the loose curl free again. “Are you doing what you wish?”

Doing what he wished? No, of course he wasn’t.

Right now he wished he could make her smile as she had when giving away her gloves. He wished he could dispense with his conscience and plead for her to take him as a lover. He wished he could pluck the pins from her sunset hair and send it tumbling over her naked skin, wished he could stop kissing her only to make her cry out in pleasure.

But always, in the face of a wish, came prosaic reality. A scarred wooden table, a plate of mutton and potatoes, a wedge of cheese. An adequate fire and a roof over one’s head. Such a reality was perfectly acceptable, even if it didn’t hold the luster of a gemlike fantasy.

“I try to wish,” he said in a calm voice, “for what I know I might attain. For respectable employment for a reasonable wage. For a reasonable employer.”

This brought a faint smile to her features, but the expression fell away in another instant. “That seems a very small dream.”

“What on earth do you mean by that? It’s a very suitable dream.”

“But it’s not really a dream, is it? It’s what you have now, just shuffled about a bit.”

Again, he folded his arms. She lifted her hands, placating. “As you say, it’s perfectly suitable. And if you insist that it’s exactly what you want, then I suppose it is a dream, after all.”

Of course it wasn’t a dream. It was good sense. It was practicality. “I don’t know what else I ought to wish for. This is my life. I am a man of business for a nobleman.” Remembering Chatfield’s words, he added, “I am not in bodily danger, nor in mortal peril. It could be far worse.”

“It could be. But if you want it to be better…”

“Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to buy happiness.”

“No one is fortunate enough for that.” She turned over her fork and scratched the tines into the surface of the table. “That’s not what I meant. I know happiness can’t be bought, or I would have bought it.”

Jennifer’s Review of Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress

Review (3.75 Stars): I absolutely love Ms. Romain’s books and I absolutely enjoy her style of writing and the humor that is sprinkled throughout each of her stories.  In Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress, Augusta Meredith is in Bath society to hide her famous identity so she can find herself a lover with no strings attached.  She pretends to be a newly widowed young woman to accomplish her mission but runs into the one person who knows most of her secrets.  Joss Everett has arrived in Bath to uncover the identity of his cousin’s blackmailer and never expected to run into the beautiful and entertaining Ms. Meredith.  She propositions Joss to become her lover at first and when he declines her invitation, he agrees to help her find a more suitable candidate if she helps him with her new found connections. As the two get closer to achieving their goals, they find that they are more alike than they expected with a certain chemistry that is becoming too hard to resist.

I loved Augusta in this story because she was just this fun and spunky woman who knew what she wanted and was willing to take a chance to get it.  I connected with her right away but I had a really hard time connecting with Joss in this story.  For some reason, I just felt that he wasn’t quite the guy that I could see with Augusta and the two of them just felt a little mis-matched.  With that said, I still enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next novel that Ms. Romain releases.  Even though I didn’t care for Joss, I think Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress was a fun read and I hope other readers will have a different opinion of Joss than I did.

Jennifer’s Review of Mistletoe on Main Street

Review (3.75 Stars): Grace Madison has returned home for the holidays to spend time with her family after breaking up with her boyfriend and her career as a writer isn’t going how she planned. Being home in Briar Creek brings back a lot of painful memories of her past life with her childhood sweetheart, Luke Hastings, who she just happens to run into at every turn.  For Luke, seeing Grace is just as painful because he is still reeling from the loss of his wife to a brain aneurysm and the secrets that he has been hiding about the day that she died.  By being near Grace, Luke is reminded of what he has lost and this holiday season, he may just find what he has always needed in his life.

Grace and Luke were an interesting couple that lived their lives with so much sadness.  Grace left Briar Creek as a young girl to discover the bright lights of New York to fulfill her dreams of becoming a writer. Luke let her go because he knew that he was meant to stay in their small town and he couldn’t stand in the way of her dreams.  Both of them wondered what if, but the timing wasn’t right since Luke had met another and was planning to marry her when Grace came back for him.

Now, they are both in Briar Creek single and their past keeps standing in the way of their future.  Luke can’t let go of the guilt he feels over his deceased wife and I was so angry and irritated with him through most of this book.  Grace was trying to make a fresh start by reopening her father’s bookstore and Luke’s guilt kept preventing them from finding happiness together.  I just wanted to smack him by the end of story and I thought that his decision to be finally be with Grace was almost too little too late.

I loved Grace’s family especially her sisters, Anna and Jane.  I am looking forward to reading Anna’s story in A Match Made on Main Street and I’m hoping that Jane will get her happy ending as well after what happened to her in this book.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Together, sweet Delilah and wicked Isadora make the perfect woman. But the Perrault family fairy is a troublemaker and imbues diamonds upon one sister and toads upon the other. Now up is down and down is up in a world where no good deed goes unpunished. Leather, blindfolds, and handcuffs purge sweet of all reserve. A few misspoken words of lust gives wicked a whole new meaning.

Once upon a time, there were two sisters, one cursed and one blessed by fairy magic…

Bibbidee-bobbidi-boo, They’re naughty. How about you?

REVIEW:
OK I do not know what I expected from this book but it certainly wasn’t this… First this book is set in two parts: Delilah’s story and Isadora’s story. I enjoyed Delilah’s but not so much of Isadora’s. And not sure why they had to throw in the stereo-typical wicked stepmother. It is a short read so I will not say too much about it except in a strange way I enjoyed it but not a lot.

Kelly reviews The Accidental Human by Dakota Cassidy

accidental humanTITLE: The Accidental Human

CHARACTERS: Heath Jefferson & Wanda Schwartz
AUTHOR: Dakota Cassidy
NARRATOR: Meredith Mitchell
PUBLICATION DATE: May 21, 2014
RUN TIME: 10 Hours & 42 Minutes
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N | Audible

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Immortality bites- new from the author of Accidentally Dead and The Accidental Werewolf.

Wanda Schwartz is raking in the dough selling Bobbie-Sue Cosmetics-and she’s a pro at recruiting new saleswomen. So, she’s shocked when a man comes to one of her in-home parties-a very hot man. Heath Jefferson is sure to put some extra spin into a lot of women’s color wheels.

When Wanda is diagnosed with a terminal illness, it doesn’t have to be a death sentence. With a werewolf and a vampire for best friends, she has options that most ordinary people wouldn’t. As Wanda ponders what to do about her mortality, Heath reveals he has secrets, and one of them is that his former bloodlust has turned into an old-fashioned lust-for Wanda. And he’s already given up too much to lose the love of his lifetimes.

REVIEW:
Wanda Schwartz is keeping a secret from her two best friends. A secret that once it gets out will change everything. But in the mean time Wanda has to get ready for her open house and sign up some new recruits for Bobby Sue. But Wanda’s newest and brightest recruit my just challenge ever one of Wanda’s last nerves.

To say that Heath Jefferson is having a rough go of it would be an understatement. Poor guys only has the cloths on his back, a watch, his man servant and his car. But when he sees the add to make a bunch of money in a short period of time he jumps at the chance. Only problem. He is a man. Yes, a man. A man who is willing to sell woman’s makeup to make a buck.

I was so excited to get to Wanda’s book. And while the story was good, the beginning was just a tad bit slow for me. But as the story went on I found that it got better and better. The last few chapters were my favorite of the whole book. I liked Wanda and Heath. I thought they were pretty funny together. It was fun to see Marty and Nina too. Even if my ears will never be the same after listening to Nina talk (Wowza that girl needs a bar of soap). All in all I am glad that I stuck with this book and finished it out.

Again, Ms. Mitchell does a great job of bring Ms. Cassidy’s characters to life. There were a few time when Ms. Mitchell was reading Nina’s dialog that I felt a little bad and shocked. She really was able to get into Nina’s potty mouth. I often wonder how narrator’s feel about things like that. 🙂 But I loved it and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
No Sad Songs Here, Darlin’

Country music princess Starlet Brubaker has a sweet tooth for moon pies and cowboys: both are yummy-and you can never have just one. Now Beckett Cates may not be a cowboy, but he certainly has the heart, soul-and body-to whet her appetite. He’s a sexy ex-Marine with a touch hotter than the scorching Texas sun and arms strong enough to catch her when she lands into trouble.

Playing bodyguard to America’s sweetheart isn’t easy for Beckett. But falling for her sure is. Unfortunately, Starlet has a reputation for keeping a guy or two wrapped around her finger and Beckett refuses to be anybody’s backup. So now it’s up to Starlet to prove that she’s put her cowboy-crazy days behind her. Otherwise, she’ll be singing solo instead of living in harmony with the man who’s loved her even before her fame and fortune.

REVIEW:
I liked this story but was not totally in love with the whole story. I thought Beckett and Starlet were fun, witty and perfect for each other. And while everything made since by the end of the book I felt some parts of the story were a little slow for me. Over all I did enjoy this book.

Kimberly reviews Want It by Jennifer Chance

want itTITLE: Want It
SERIES #: Rule Breakers #3
CHARACTERS: Erin & Zander
AUTHOR: Jennifer Chance
PUBLICATION DATE: 12/09/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In the latest tantalizing Rule Breakers novel from Jennifer Chance, an irresistible alpha male follows his ex into a deadly standoff—and reignites a heated affair.

For Erin Connelly, being a good girl isn’t such a bad thing. She’s working her dream job at a Boston art gallery and staying out of trouble, which is more than she can say for her deadbeat mom. Unfortunately, her mother’s latest misadventure lands her in the clutches of a Mexican drug lord. Now the only person who can save her is the one man Erin has no business asking for help: the sexy-as-sin army ranger who just so happens to be her former high school sweetheart.

Zander James is no gentleman—and no officer, either, thanks to Erin. Four years ago, she made a call that terminated his highest aspirations . . . and their relationship. He’s never forgiven her, but when he learns that Erin’s embarking on a half-baked rescue mission, he sure as hell can’t let her go alone. Now, with a treacherous enemy lying in wait, the electrifying tension between them may just be Zander’s undoing. Because while he may be able to keep Erin alive, he can’t promise to keep his hands off her.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is the third in the Rule Breakers series and for the most part it is an enjoyable read and I wanted to read every word to find out what would happen. I even thought I figured a part out and it ended up not being true (might have been better if it was). But do I consider Zander a Rule Breaker? Not really. Maybe when he was young but not know. Which actually brings up something. The characters seem older than the 22 year olds they are supposed to be. There doesn’t seem to be any youth in them anymore.

They are both so mad at each other for what happened four years ago that they can’t see straight and yet so attracted to each other that they can’t think of anything else. But neither understands why they other did what they did four years ago. In all honestly I might be able to understand Zander being upset but holding a grudge for something that Erin really should have done? It doesn’t seem right. Her side I understand completely.

Like I said it was an interesting read and the story is a bit suspenseful but there are problems with the dialog. I can’t even count the number of times Erin drifts off from the conversation and then says “What?”. It seemed the author found enjoyable (to her) lines and then used them a handful a times then started with a new line. The love scenes were repetitive. There were a few other things but all in all it was a good read and I will read the next in the series which I am thinking is Dani and R-Four’s story (?).

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Being sixteen, homeless and surviving on her wits has made Shawna’s life more than a little challenging. Now she is also the target of the Doma, creatures who appear human, and is on the run. She has never bothered anyone and makes it a point to stay in the background.
So why are they trying to kill her?

Things seem to be going great for once until her new life is interrupted and she is forced to put her training to the test.
Shawna’s world will never be the same again, if she can survive.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is the story of a homeless teenager in New York city named Shawna. Shawna was orphaned as a child and has been living on the streets with her best friend Javon. However, that life would be short lived as one terrible night Shawna’s world forever changed.

This book was a page turner from the beginning. I was immediately captivated by Decker and his lethal persona. The opening scene had me hooked and it was all because of him. He comes across Shawna one night and intervenes during a terrible situation. He admits to Shawna that the world does have its monsters – the Doma. These are creatures who may look human, but are anything but. Shawna begins to train as an Acolyte with Decker in the hopes of fighting off this evil – along with Decker’s handy assistant Mr. Gibbs (who I adore)!

This author was new to me and I really enjoyed this book. This story highlights the turbulent lifestyle of a homeless teenager in a big city who was thrust into a whole new way of life. I felt that the way the story was told, and the way Shawna reacted was very true for someone her age – even though she is an exceptional young woman. The outcome of the story remained a mystery to me, nothing was given away and I found myself surprised more than once at a turn of events – which is always welcome! This was an intriguing story with even more intriguing characters – including the Doma, who I found kinda fascinating. If you’re looking for a good fantasy YA read I definitely recommend it!

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Tattoo artist Keelie Jessup can handle that someone else has claimed the man of her dreams. She’s just not pleased with her remaining options…

Keelie doesn’t believe in the “perfect man.” But the men who are worth the trouble are usually taken—like her business partner Zach Barnes. After a string of bad luck and the lost chance with Zach, Keelie decides that maybe flying solo—and living with suppressed desires—is the key to happiness.

As a photographer, Zane Barnes has an eye for the human form, and his eyes can’t get enough of Keelie’s curves. Unfortunately, Keelie is like most women—always fawning over his little brother, Zach. Zane is about ready to give up, but then a few stolen moments at his brother’s wedding have him thinking maybe there’s a chance there after all. Now he just has to prove that the perfect man does exist…for her

REVIEW:
After reading Wrecked I could not wait for the next book in this series. I didn’t like Keelie much in book 1 mostly because she caused a lot of trouble. But in Razed I learned to like her. Keelie has a lot of secrets and demons in her past that affect her future. It was great to see her work through them throughout the book. Zane, is a great guy who has been pining for Keelie for years. He is finally at a point it is all or nothing.
I did like Razed. But I didn’t like it as much as I loved Wrecked. I am not 100% sure what it was. I just didn’t connect with Keelie and Zane in the same way I did with Zach and Abby. But even with that I did enjoy the story and am looking forward to the next book in this series.

If you have not read Cole’s Redemption you may not want to read this book yet. The events that happened in book 5 shape the dynamic of book 6. You have been warned. I will do my best to keep the review spoiler free for those who have not read book 5 yet.
***End of Warning***

Wolf’s Fall picks up after the devastating events in Cole’s Redemption. I can remember reading Cole’s Redemption thinking how on earth could Ms. Tyler let this happen to Nick. Not my big strong Nick. But at last it did happen and Nick has to try to move on. Which is not an easy thing for him to do. Through in the fact that he just met his mate and she is of all things a vampire.
Wolf’s Fall took me on a lot of highs and lows. Lows as to how low Nick really is. Highs that Calla is there for him. Lows of the suffering that Calla has to endure. Highs that Nick finally sees the light. All in all this was a very good book and a really quick read for me. There were just a few holes in the story for me. Things moved very quickly, which is fine but I would have like to see more relationship building.

Even with that I am so very very glad that Nick got his story and hope that this will lead him on the path of healing.

If you are a fan of the Alpha Pack you will surely enjoy Nick’s book, especially after Cole’s Redemption.
