BOOK SYNOPSIS:
**Soon to be a Motion Picture starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper**
The year is 1929, and newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton travel from Boston to the North Carolina mountains where they plan to create a timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new to the mountains—but she soon shows herself to be the equal of any man, overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving her husband’s life in the wilderness. Together this lord and lady of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish all who fall out of favor. Yet when Serena learns that she will never bear a child, she sets out to murder the son George fathered without her. Mother and child begin a struggle for their lives, and when Serena suspects George is protecting his illegitimate family, the Pembertons’ intense, passionate marriage starts to unravel as the story moves toward its shocking reckoning.
Rash’s masterful balance of violence and beauty yields a riveting novel that, at its core, tells of love both honored and betrayed.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is a dark tale. Serena and her husband Pemberton are very dark entities indeed. They are entangled in a dark love story that envelopes the both of them so completely it shadows the rest of the world. They only care for one-another and power – and will destroy or kill anyone who stands in their way. That includes investors, business rivals and even the 18 year old mother of a 2 year old Pemberton got pregnant before marrying Serena. All of the characters in this book have distinct personalities and something hidden behind the surface. I will say, the last quarter of the book was very stressful and full of angst – which I love. Very good read!

Kelly reviews One Grave At A Time by Jeaniene Frost

One Grave At A TimeTITLE: One Grave At A Time
SERIES #: Night Huntress #6
CHARACTERS: Cat & Bones
AUTHOR: Jeaniene Frost
PUBLICATION DATE: Aug 30, 2011
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans’ voodoo queen just keeps on giving-leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.

REVIEW:
Cat is still having some after effects from her involvement in the ghouls vs vampire war. The war might be over and it might look like things are quieting down for Cat & Bones, but that is far from reality. Cat is asked to help hunt down a ghost who likes to kill. This killer might prove to be the trickiest yet and how far is Cat willing to go to save his next victims?

This was not my favorite Cat & Bones book. But I am guessing that this book was intended as a build up to the next book. None the less any time with Cat, Bones and their friends is always worth the trip.

Kimberly review All For You by Christi Barth

all for youTITLE: All For You
SERIES #: Shore Secrets #2
CHARACTERS: Casey & Zane
AUTHOR: Christi Barth
PUBLICATION DATE: 02/09/15
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Small-town park ranger Casey Hobbes has spent her life under the radar, carefully guarding a secret. “The forest flirt,” as her best friend calls her, keeps things casual with men. That way she’ll never care enough to be tempted to share the truth about her past. But when she spots a half-naked stranger on the lake’s edge, Casey can’t resist his muscles or his charm and she’s all-in for enjoying both, while keeping emotion out of it. What could be the danger of one summer fling?

Professor Zane Buchanan has built his entire career on exposing the dark realities of cults, but one—the Sunshine Seekers—remains infuriatingly impossible to crack. Zane’s shocked to discover its sole anonymous survivor is hiding in his new hometown. It’s nearly impossible to concentrate on work, however, when he’s derailed by his attraction to the beautiful blonde in khaki uniform shorts.

As things between Casey and Zane heat up, she struggles with keeping her past from him. And Zane’s on a quest to expose the truth, no matter the consequences. Will their growing emotions finally unseal Casey’s big secret? Or will she turn her back on love to keep the past safely buried?

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts I had kind of a hard time with this story. I never really came to enjoy Casey and/or Zane. I mean they were fine but not great. Both of them are just a bit dull. The story is ok. But went on a bit too long. There were too many repeats of the same things. It just wasn’t my favorite story.

Now that all being said it was not all bad either. The underlying story is interesting. The fact that Casey was raised in a cult for a bit is kind of different. Zane’s background is good too. He is not the stereotypical professor with patches on his elbows. He is down to Earth and is sweet.

Would I tell someone to run out and buy it? No. But it could be a good book to have ready to read on your e-reader for between books.

seekerTITLE: Seeker
SERIES #: Seeker #1
CHARACTERS: Quin, John & Shinobu
AUTHOR: Arwen Elys Dayton
PUBLICATION DATE: February 10, 2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Quin Kincaid has been put through years of brutal training for what she thinks is the noble purpose of becoming a revered ‘Seeker’.
Only when it’s too late does she discover she will be using her new-found knowledge and training to become an assassin. Quin’s new role will take her around the globe, from a remote estate in Scotland to a bustling, futuristic Hong Kong where the past she thought she had escaped will finally catch up with her.

REVIEW:
It’s taken me a few days to write this review after finishing the book because I didn’t know where to start. This book held a lot of promise and the characters were likable – but I feel like the story didn’t go anywhere. Quin, John and Shinobu are all training to become Seeker’s and it’s this huge deal that they’ve looked forward to their whole lives, but I still have no idea exactly what a Seeker is. Lots of things happen in the book, but nothing that solidly explains anything. I kept hoping that it would all make sense at the end, but that was not the case. I did hope for a more in-depth understanding of the story however it wasn’t really delivered.

Kelly reviews The Surrender Gate by Christopher Rice

surrender gateTITLE: The Surrender Gate
SERIES #: Desire Exchange #1
CHARACTERS: Emily Blaine, Jonathan Claiborne & Marcus Dylan
AUTHOR: Christopher Rice
PUBLICATION DATE: February 3, 2015
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N {Coming Soon}

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rice’s first foray into erotic romance, The Flame, earned accolades from some of the genre’s most beloved authors. “Sensual, passionate and intelligent,” wrote Lexi Blake, “it’s everything an erotic romance should be.” J. Kenner called it “absolutely delicious,” Cherise Sinclair hailed it as “beautifully lyrical” and Loreli James announced, “I look forward to reading more!” Now, Christopher returns you to the world first introduced in The Flame with an all new novel of The Desire Exchange…

Emily Blaine’s life is about to change. Arthur Benoit, the kindly multi-millionaire who has acted as her surrogate father for years, has just told her he’s leaving her his entire estate, and he only has a few months to live. Soon Emily will go from being a restaurant manager with a useless English degree to the one of the richest and most powerful women in New Orleans. There’s just one price. Arthur has written a letter to his estranged son Ryan he hopes will mend the rift between them, and he wants Emily to deliver the letter before it’s too late. But finding Ryan won’t be easy. He’s been missing for years. He was recently linked to a mysterious organization called The Desire Exchange. But is The Desire Exchange just an urban legend? Or are the rumors true? Is it truly a secret club where the wealthy can live out their most private sexual fantasies?

It’s a task Emily can’t undertake alone. But there’s only one man qualified to help her, her gorgeous and confident best friend, Jonathan Claiborne. She’s suspected Jonathan of working as a high-priced escort for months now, and she’s willing to bet that while giving pleasure to some of the most powerful men in New Orleans, Jonathan has uncovered some possible leads to The Desire Exchange—and to Ryan Benoit. But Emily’s attempt to uncover Jonathan’s secret life lands the two of them in hot water. Literally. In order to escape the clutches of one of Jonathan’s most powerful and dangerous clients, they’re forced to act on long buried desires—for each other.

When Emily’s mission turns into an undercover operation, Jonathan insists on going with her. He also insists they continue to explore their impossible, reckless passion for each other. Enter Marcus Dylan, the hard-charging ex-NAVY Seal Arthur has hired to keep Emily safe. But Marcus has been hired for another reason. He, too, has a burning passion for Emily, a passion that might keep Emily from being distracted and confused by a best friend who claims he might be able to go straight just for her. But Marcus is as rough and controlling as Jonathan is sensual and reckless. As Emily searches for a place where the rich turn their fantasies into reality, she will be forced to decide which one of her own long-ignored fantasies should become her reality. But as Emily, Jonathan, and Marcus draw closer to The Desire Exchange itself, they find their destination isn’t just shrouded in mystery, but in magic as well.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Emily is a girl on a mission. Two mission: One to find out what the heck her best friend is up to when he leaves her. But what she finds is not exactly what she expected. And her time as a spy is interrupted with a crash though a skylight. And the second is to find the long lost son of her dad’s best friend. But in order to do that Emily is going to have to cross boundaries she has only ever dreamed of crossing.

I am a little on the fence about this story. It started off very interesting and then trailed off for me a bit then picked up again at the end. I enjoyed reading Emily’s journey into desire and her fantasies. But there was just a little something missing for me in this story. Mr. Rice has another Desire Exchange novella coming out later in the year, I look forward to reading it.

If you are looking for a hot steamy read that will take you on a journey of finding your hearts desire and making fantasy become reality. You should pick up a copy of The Surrender Gate.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: An Early Wake by Sheila Connolly

9780425252536_medium_An_Early_Wake

Guest Post

by Sheila Connolly

I’m amazed to find that I’ve been writing for 14 years now, although I didn’t have a published book to hold until 2008. I had no idea what I was doing when I started writing—I just jumped in. But I always knew I wanted to write about Ireland.

The second book I ever completed was a sweet romance set in West Cork. I hadn’t even dabbled in mystery at that point, but it was the setting that came first: a small pub in a small town on the coast in a far corner of the country. The real place was called Connolly’s. It must have been fate, right?

I found it by accident the first time my family and I traveled to Ireland, mainly looking for where my father’s family had come from. We allowed all of one week for that trip, and part of that was spent in Dublin, so we moved fast. I had done enough research to know that my father’s father’s family had come from someplace north of a village called Leap (which it’s pronounced “lep”—it got its name from O’Donovan’s Leap, where one of the head men of the village escaped pursuing Englishmen by urging his horse to leap over a small river there. He and his horse survived, and the village got its name.)

We rented a car and pulled into the village (one street, population 210) in the pouring rain, late in the afternoon. We hadn’t made reservations, but we found a B&B with a room, and ate dinner at the local hotel. And when we made our way to the main road the next (sunny!) morning, there was the pub, across the road. Of course we went over and introduced ourselves, and I’ve been going back ever since.

In Buried in a Bog, the first book in the County Cork series, I used the setting of the pub and the town, and then dipped into all the genealogy I’d done on my own family. Then I threw in a body. Where better to solve mysteries than in a pub, where everyone stops in to talk at one time or another? But there’s one problem with writing murder mysteries set in Ireland: there are very few murders. Worse, for most of those that happen, the local police (or gardai in Irish) have a pretty good idea who did the deed. Not a lot of detective work needed!

Actually, Buried in a Bog involves two murders: one that took place a long ago, and a mugging gone wrong in the present—but they’re connected. The second book, Scandal in Skibbereen, brings an American curator to the corner of the country hunting for a lost painting she isn’t even sure exists, and someone dies. Related? It’s not clear, but it was events in the past that led to the truth about the present death.

The third book, An Early Wake, is about music in the pub. When most people say “music” and “Ireland” in the same breath, they’re thinking about the traditional style, the Clancy Brothers and the like, with tin whistles and fiddles. But there’s more to it than that—think about U2 or the Cranberries or more recently, Glen Hansard (who wrote the Academy Award winning song Falling Slowly from Once). Irish music lives on in the modern world—and in West Cork, a lot of it happened at Connolly’s (and, yes, Glen Hansard played there). It’s hard to believe when you look at the place, which has all of two rooms that hold (legally) only 200 people, but it was a major attraction up until the last decade, and people still remember.

And that’s what I wanted to capture in An Early Wake. How did that happen, at that time and in that place? How did the word get out, before the Internet? My protagonist Maura Donovan is struggling to figure out a way to keep the pub she’s inherited in the black, so she lets herself be persuaded to try a night of music bringing together some of the players who’d performed there in the past, because local people who remember the old glory days promise her it can happen again. Unfortunately, one of the former performers dies. And once again, the police have to look at the past and the present to understand the death.

There is always a temptation to write about Ireland as though it is all about men in tweed caps with a foaming pint of Guinness in one hand, spinning stories for friends and tourists alike with a charming brogue, with rainbows overhead and sheep frolicking in the very green meadows. I won’t say that’s not true—now and then. But Ireland is both a modern country (with very real modern problems) and a place with long memories of a less than happy past. I try to weave these together in a way that makes the place come alive, in more than one dimension. So I go and I sit in pubs and I listen, and I talk to strangers, and stories drop into my lap. There’s a bit of magic there.

That’s what I fell in love with, the first time I saw Ireland. That’s why I keep going back, and why I write this series.

Pub owner Maura Donovan may have Irish kin, but she doesn’t seem to have the luck of the Irish. Who could have foreseen that bringing live music back to Sullivan’s Pub would lead to a dead musician?

Summer is ending in County Cork, Ireland, and with it the tourist season. Expat Maura Donovan is determined to keep Sullivan’s Pub in the black as the days grow shorter—but how? When she hears that the place was once a hot spot for Irish musicians who’d come play in the back room, she wonders if bringing back live music might be Sullivan’s salvation.

As word gets out, legendary musicians begin to appear at the pub, and the first impromptu jam session brings in scores of music lovers. But things hit a sour note when Maura finds a dead musician in the back room the next morning. With a slew of potential suspects, it’s going to take more than a pint and a good think to force a murderer to face the music.

Jennifer’s Review of An Early Wake

Review (3.75 Stars): I’m sad to say that I haven’t read the other books in the series but that doesn’t take away from this enjoyable mystery.  I liked Maura as a character and the other colorful cast of characters in this series.  Ms. Connolly does a great job describing the Irish countryside and makes me as a reader want to spend some time at Sullivan’s Pub, having a drink and listening to the Billy’s tales.

This mystery dealt with music and Maura learning that Sullivan’s Pub used to be a big part of the music scene in the 90’s, where quite a few people still remember the jam sessions that took place there.  When they find the body of a musician after reviving the jam sessions at the Pub, Maura must find a killer before they silence the music for good. This subject matter always interests me and I love all the research that Ms. Connolly had to do to make this mystery come to life. An Early Wake is a charming musical mystery with delightful characters and set in the magical Irish countryside that will be sure to entertain readers.  I’m looking forward to starting the series from the very beginning so I can learn all about Maura’s previous adventures in the lovely town of County Cork, Ireland.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts I accidentally began reading this book without realizing it was already a part of a series. Thankfully, the author gives you enough background information that allows this to read easily as a standalone book. Another thing I didn’t realize what that this book is considered Christian fiction – not a big deal, just not something I was expecting. Holly is a good lead character whose past mistakes lead her life into a series of unexpected and challenging situations. I appreciated her need to better her life because of her child and felt she was an easy character to relate to. Creed was also a great character. His life really took a turn for the worse and threw him into a heap of trouble that makes his patch collide with Holly’s. I enjoyed the supporting characters a lot and found the whole group very entertaining. Enjoyable read.

Kelly & Kimberly review Fire Me Up by Kimberly Kincaid

fire me upTITLE: Fire Me Up
SERIES #: Pine Mountain #4
CHARACTERS: Adrian Holt & Teagan O’Malley
AUTHOR: Kimberly Kincaid
PUBLICATION DATE: January 27, 2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
If You Can’t Stand The Heat…

Teagan O’Malley can handle a crisis. She’s a paramedic, it’s her job. But she never expected to land in the kitchen of her father’s pub, with no notice, no cash, and no room for error. The kitchen is not her favorite place. Lucky for her, she just scraped a bad-boy chef off the pavement after a motorcycle accident—and something about him says he can turn up the heat in more ways than one.

Adrian Holt has had a rough few years, and he’s not eager to get tangled up in anything more complicated than a good risotto. But with a broken arm and a head full of bad memories, he needs a challenge to keep him sane. Teagan’s dare-me attitude and smoldering mess of a bar are just what the doctor ordered. And the two of them together might cook up some even better medicine

KELLY’S REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts I really enjoy my visits to Pine Mountain. I am really glad that Adrian finally got his own story. I have been wondering about him from the start of this series. He has been all tall, dark, protective and secretive. But all that comes to a crashing halt when he is hurt in an accident. Poor Adrian finds himself on leave from his job. And that last thing that Adrian needs is free time. Thank goodness for fate and Teagan.
Teagan is one tough cookie. Until you add in sleep deprivation, wine and one very yummy chef, then she is a like putty in his hands 🙂 Besides every girl needs a hero right? Even if said hero is a pain in the butt. Well a pain that can cook and set Teagan on fire.
These two were fun to read. There were times that the story was just a tad bit slow for me. But over all I loved it. I hope that we will get to see Adrian & Teagan in future books.

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts Another great trip to Pine Mountain even though we didn’t get to see much of the town this time. We met Adrian in the previous book and for that matter we met Teagan as well… Funny we even met them together and I think we knew then that they would have a great chemistry and they do. I enjoyed the story but I will say there is a lot of backstory with not only these two but the others as well. I guess that is the authors way of bringing us back because we want to know what Brennan has hidden in his closet. But Adrian was hiding his past, Teagan was hiding hers, Tagan’s dad has his, Brennan his and so on…. I mean how many secrets could one bar hold?

Some of the writing was repeated a bit too many times and the sex scenes a bit dull but all in all the story is sweet and a nice read.

CHARACTERS: The Prince, Gabriel & Julianne Emerson
AUTHOR: Sylvain Reynard
PUBLICATION DATE: January 20, 2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The unveiling of a set of priceless illustrations of Dante’s Divine Comedy at the Uffizi Gallery exposes the unsuspecting Professor Gabriel Emerson and his beloved wife, Julianne, to a mysterious and dangerous enemy.

Unbeknownst to the Professor, the illustrations he secretly acquired years ago were stolen a century earlier from the ruler of Florence’s underworld. Now one of the most dangerous beings in Italy is determined to reclaim his prized artwork and exact revenge on the Emersons, but not before he uncovers something disturbing about Julianne …

Set in the city of Florence, “The Prince” is a prequel novella to “The Raven,” which is the first book in the new Florentine Series Trilogy by Sylvain Reynard.

“The Prince” can be read as a standalone but readers of The Gabriel Series may be curious about the connection between The Professor’s world and the dark, secret underworld of “The Prince.

REVIEW:
After reading Gabriel’s series I was super excited to learn the Sylvain was going to be doing another series. To say this series is going to be a tad bit different would be a total understatement. The Florentine series has a huge paranormal element to it. That being said The Prince connects The Florentine series to the Gabriel’s Inferno series. which means I hope we get to see more of Gabriel in the future. Until then I can’t wait to get a my copy of book one The Raven.

Natasha reviews Vanished by Elizabeth Heiter

vanishedTITLE: Vanished
SERIES #: The Profiler #2
CHARACTERS: Evelyn Baines
AUTHOR: Elizabeth Heiter
PUBLICATION DATE: 12/30/14
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Sometimes the past can haunt you…

Eighteen years ago, FBI profiler Evelyn Baine’s best friend, Cassie Byers, disappeared, the third in a series of unsolved abductions. Only a macabre nursery rhyme was left at the scene, a nursery rhyme that claimed Evelyn was also an intended victim. Now, after all these years of silence, another girl has gone missing in South Carolina, and the Nursery Rhyme Killer is taking credit. But is Cassie s abductor really back, or is there a copycat at work?

Sometimes the past is best forgotten…

Evelyn has waited eighteen years for a chance to investigate, but when she returns to Rose Bay, she finds a dark side to the seemingly idyllic town. As the place erupts in violence and the kidnapper strikes again, Evelyn knows this is her last chance. If she doesn’t figure out what happened to Cassie eighteen years ago, it may be Evelyn s turn to vanish without a trace.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is the second book in the Profiler series which features Evelyn Baines as an FBI profiler who struggles with her past, the disappearance of her best friend when she was a child and her current employment position. Though this is a part of a series this book can be read without reading book 1 since the author recaps fairly well what happens in the first book in the series. I have to be honest, throughout this book I was pretty impatient because I just knew who the kidnapper was and who it wasn’t and I was so frustrated with the entire cast of characters – especially Evelyn for wasting so much time looking in the wrong directions! I was seriously so fed up with the false chase that I was yelling at my Kindle. Then – FINALLY – they realize what I’ve realized the whole time…OH BUT I WAS WRONG! Oh my gosh I was so wrong and I loved that I was. It is truly enjoyable to be so confident in something and have the author throw you for a complete loop – I did not see that coming and that’s a highly paid compliment. That cemented the book for me in the great read category. I did enjoy the supporting characters – Tomas was my favorite, and I also enjoyed Kyle and Evelyn. Evelyn did seem weak and totally irrational at times, but there were others where she was very assertive and confident. If I saw more of that side of her I bet I’d like her a lot more. All in all a good read that’s definitely worth reading to the very last page.

What Beau isn’t prepared for is the extent of his attraction to his beautiful and powerful client. What began as a simple assignment, just another job, quickly turns personal as Beau discovers he’ll do anything at all to protect Ari. Even if it costs him his life.

REVIEW:
In His Keeping is the second book in Ms. Banks Slow Burn trilogy. An similar to book 1, one of the Devereaux boys finds himself tangled up with a woman that has psychic powers.
I liked this book. Liked Beau. Like Arial. But I was not overly in love with the story. I found at times that the dialog dragged on and on. I did enjoy learning more about the Devereaux’s parents, even if we are left with more questions than answers at the moment.

If you liked book one (Keep Me Safe) you will enjoy In His Keeping. I am looking forward to the next book in this trilogy and Zach’s story. I do hope that Quinn & Tori will get stories too? Maybe a spin off?

Jennifer’s Review of The Accidental Alchemist

Review (3.5 Stars): The Accidental Alchemist was an intriguing mystery for me due to the fact that Zoe was an alchemist and had experienced so much history in her life.  I loved that she chose Portland as the place to call home after so many years of searching and a place where she could finally be accepted.  I also liked having Dorian, the french chef gargoyle, be a main character in this mystery and he was a wonderful addition to the storyline.  The pacing of the book was slow at times but I still found The Accidental Alchemist to be an enjoyable and light-hearted paranormal mystery. I’m interested in learning more about Zoe and Dorian in future installments of this series.
