Audio Book Lovin’ Presents: Guest Blogger Tara Lain + a giveaway

Audiobook 2016

Viviana, Enchantress of Books and I are excited to have Tara Lain guest blogging on our second annual Audio Book Lovin’ series.   So with our further ado I turn the blog over to Tara.

Audiobooks – My Secret Heath Weapon

Hi! I’m so happy to be a part of this great audiobook event. My thanks to Enchantress of Books and Books n’ Kisses for inviting me. Audiobooks are my secret health weapon! Now, I know all of you are audiobook lovers, so this will be no revelation to you, but for me – well, I’m a johnny-come-lately in the audiobook health department.

A number of years ago, I used to go to an office every day and I loved to listen to audiobooks in my car. I especially loved the Great Courses and would work my way through amazing lectures on opera and the history of China and great authors of America with a smile on my face – even though I was caught in Southern California traffic! Then my life shifted and I got to work from home about 95% of the time. Away went the driving – and the audiobooks. I totally got out of the habit. One day a half year ago or so, I saw someone on Facebook extolling the virtues of listening to audiobooks while walking. Hmm. Sounded interesting, but I knew so little about audiobooks I wasn’t even sure how one got a book to a place where you could listen to it. I went to Audible. I figured I had a bunch of books on audio by this time and I should be supporting the audiobook market! I signed up. Chose a couple books. Presto, like magic they appeared on my phone. The next time I went for a walk, I plugged in my earphones, grabbed my phone and – cool! I enjoyed my walk a lot.

But many times, I walk with others so no book. Then I went back to the gym in a big way. Hey, if the books were amusing on a walk outside, maybe they’d be even better on the boring treadmill. That did it. I’m now a dedicated audiobook listener at the gym. I don’t have a fancy audio device. I just tuck my phone into my tights (admittedly, a little dorky) and haul butt around the weights, TRX, treadmill, rower, elliptical, et al. Only in my Pilates classes do I leave my earphones off. But, I have a Pilates reformer in my garage. I wasn’t using it because the garage is too boring – no TV, radio, or interesting sights aside from two Priuses – but the magic audiobook has changed all that. I head outside to the garage with a book playing and come back in an hour later exercised and thoroughly entertained. I’ve enjoyed Anne Tenino doing hundreds and Amy Lane through agonizing arm exercises.

I know you’re probably already aware of all this, but maybe I can jog your memory as that Facebook post did for me months ago. Audiobooks make everything better –especially at the gym!

UNCHAINED - RDL Teaser 1

Excerpt-

“Find me. I’m waiting, Titos. I’m waiting for you…”

She always called him Titos in his hallucinations. A nickname that translated to fire. One that now brought him around to stare down the dark and empty hallway even though he knew she wasn’t real.

Nothing moved. No sound met his ears. The castle was as silent as it had been since the day he’d arrived. But his spine tingled with apprehension, and his god-sense, something he rarely relied on because no one knew where he was, shot a warning blare straight through his ears.

The witches in the valley at the base of Mt. Parnithia had told him this castle in the Argolean realm had once belonged to an evil sorcerer who’d chosen darkness over light. That sorcerer’s quest for power had cost him his life, and he now resided in the lowest levels of Tartarus, tortured endlessly by Hades much as Prometheus had been tortured by Zeus. His energy still lingered, though. A vile and murky energy Prometheus felt vibrating in his bones. As a divine being, Prometheus wasn’t worried that energy would claim him—he was too strong for that—but he couldn’t help but wonder if the sorcerer’s dark energy was somehow affecting him. Could it be the source of the voice?

“Titos… I’m waiting…”

“Who’s there?” he called.

Silence met his ears. His pulse ticked up as he scanned the darkened corridor, the only light coming from the torch behind him. Still nothing moved. Even the wind outside the castle walls had died down as if it too were afraid to utter a sound.

His imagination. It had to be. A hallucination or whatever the fuck he wanted to call it. Frowning, he turned away only to catch a flash of white out of the corner of his eye.

He whipped back. Some kind of gauzy fabric disappeared into the library, followed by the sound of laughter.

Sexy, feminine laughter.

Audio Book Lovin’ Presents: Guest Blogger Heather Killough-Walden

Audiobook 2016

Viviana, Enchantress of Books and I are very excited to have Heather Killough-Walden back on Audio Book Lovin’ again this year.  We enjoyed having Heather in 2015.  If you missed her post last year please check it out here.   Heather wrote a guest blog for us.   But before we get to that please let me introduce you to Heather.

Heather Killough-WaldenHeather Killough-Walden is a California native currently living in Texas with her husband and child. She is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Big Bad Wolf series, The Kings series, the Lost Angels series, the October Trilogy, the Neverland series, and The Chosen Soul series. Heather’s educational background includes religious studies, archeology, and law. She has traveled all over the world but hopes to one day live in a town with a world-class hockey team. (Let’s Go Pens!)

You can find Heather atWebsite | Facebook | Twitter | Goodreads |Pinterest | Audible | Tantor

With out further ado…. I give you The Kings by Heather Killough-Walden
Why “Kings?”

Because it’s what we all want. Isn’t it?

Have you ever noticed that when you’re reading a paranormal romance series dealing with an entire species of vampires or werewolves or what have you, and the author takes the time to describe the species’ societal hierarchy, you always find yourself wondering about the man who must be at the top of that hierarchy? Granted, a few of us wonder whether there’s already a woman up there too. Or perhaps there’s only a queen… but we secretly hope not. In short, what we’re hoping for is a king. A single king. A hot, powerful, single king – and we want to read his story.

At least, that’s how it always was for me. When I was younger, in every series I read, I wanted to know about the guy in charge. With Kenyon’s books, it was all about Acheron to me. In the Carpathian Vampires series by Feehan, it started off with the prince, but we all knew it was Gregori who held all the real power. So I wanted to read about him.

Finally, I realized that rather than read series after series in which I spend the entire time “ho-humming” through each book just so I can get to the last one – I could write a series myself that dealt with nothing but kings. What an idea! ALL KINGS. Does it get better than that? No waiting for the one in charge here. Right from the very beginning, we get to deal with the men who hold all the face cards. The ones behind the curtain. The power.

Because I love power. I do. I admit it. It’s attractive. It’s titillating. Hell, it just really turns me on. Mix that tremendous power with a deep-down kind (but tortured) heart, a gorgeous face, and a brilliant mind, and I’ve carved out my own little slice of heaven. And because I’m an author, I get to share that slice of heaven with all of you.

So enjoy your power – all thirteen books of it. (And know that there will probably be more to come when that’s finished. After all, in an infinite multiverse, there is no shortage of worlds who need kings.)

– Heather Killough-Walden

Audio Book Lovin’ Presents: Guest Blogger Molly Harper

Audiobook 2016

Viviana, Enchantress of Books and I are super excited to have Molly Harper back for our 2nd Annual Audio Book Lovin’ series. I have listened to all of Molly’s books on audio.  Not only does she write some of the funniest, snarkiest and witty books I have ever read her narrators is amazing too (watch for Amanda Ronconi’s post coming soon).

Molly Harper can you please share with us your thoughts on your books being turned into audiobooks.

Molly: There’s very little I don’t love about having my books converted to audio. One of the first things I asked my agent when we sold NICE GIRLS DON’T HAVE FANGS was, “Do you think we could sell it as audio book!?”

And Audible found the perfect narrator in Amanda Ronconi. She has just the right ear for my snark and sarcasm. And her mother comes from Kentucky, so her accent is very accurate. There are little bits that she makes funnier than I could with her intonation and pauses.

Listening to my own books on audio allows me to experience them for the “first time” all over again. I can take myself out of the reading process and instead of worrying about chapter length and semicolons, I focus on the story.

The only negative thing about audio books is that they let you hear all of the flaws in your writing. You realize how many times you use the word “shrugged.” You hear the awkward spots in your dialogue and realize “ah! I could have done this or that better.”

But it’s worth it when I get messages from people who tell me I make their commute tolerable or that they practically fell off their treadmill laughing at something I wrote. It is my goal in life to make public transportation as uncomfortable as possible.

Did you miss last years interview with Molly and Amanda?  Check it out HERE

Let’s listen to a sample from NICE GIRLS DON’T HAVE FANGS.

You can check out more audio clips of Molly’s book over at Audible (HERE)

mollyaugustLet’s learn a little more about Molly

When Molly Harper was eight years old, she set up a “writing office” in her parents’ living room, complete with an old manual typewriter and a toy phone. And she (very slowly) pecked out the story of her third-grade class taking a trip around the world and losing a kid in each city. She had a dark sense of humor even then.

When Molly was considerably older, she headed for Western Kentucky University, where she majored in print journalism. After graduation, she landed a job with The Paducah Sun and married her high school sweetheart, David, a local police officer. After six years at the newspaper, Molly took a more family-friendly secretarial position at a local church office.

Her husband worked nights and Molly was alone with their small child in the “The Apartment of Lost Souls.” A big fan of vampire movies and TV shows, she decided to write a vampire romance novel. Molly created Jane Jameson, a bit of an accidental loser. Jane is single, almost 30, and a librarian working in Half-Moon Hollow, Ky. She has become a permanent fixture on her Mama’s prayer list. And despite the fact that she’s pretty good at her job, she just got canned so her boss could replace her with someone who occasionally starts workplace fires. Jane drowns her sorrows at the local faux nostalgia-themed sports bar. On her way home, she’s mistaken for a deer and shot by a drunk hunter. And then she wakes up as a vampire. The three-book Jane Jameson series–which includes Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs,Nice Girls Don’t Date Dead Men and Nice Girls Don’t Live Forever—was released in 2009.  A fourth and final installment, Nice Girls Don’t Bite Their Neighbors, was released in 2012.

Molly continues stories in the Jane Jameson universe through her Half-Moon Hollow series,Driving Mr. Dead, The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires, Undead Sublet, and A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses.  Undead Sublet is a short story in The Undead in My Bed anthology.  A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses will be released in June 2013.  A special free audio holiday novella, I’m Dreaming of an Undead Christmas, was released in December 2013.

Molly will update her popular Naked Werewolf romance series in 2013. How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf, was released in February 2011, quickly followed by The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf. A third installment, How to Run With a Naked Werewolf, will be released in December 2013.  Her first-ever “haunted house story,” Better Homes and Hauntings, will be released in June 2014.

Molly will launch her first-ever contemporary romance series with My Bluegrass Baby in December 2012.  Rhythm and Bluegrass was released in October 2013.

Molly’s books are published by Pocket Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. They are available in print, as e-books and audio books at major book stores and on Amazon. Molly is a native of Kentucky. She lives in Paducah with her husband and children.

Audiobook 2016

Viviana, Enchantress of Books and I are super excited to feature first time guest Carrie Ann Ryan during our 2nd annual Audio Book Lovin’ Series.  Did you know that you can get almost all of Carrie Ann’s books on audio?  If you are new to Carrie Ann or her books let me start by introducing you to her.

Carrie Ann Ryan (1)

A little bit about Carrie Ann:

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born.Carrie Ann is a bestselling author of over twenty novels and novellas and has so much more on her mind (and on her spreadsheets *grins*) that she isn’t planning on giving up her dream anytime soon.

Redwood Pack Book 7.7

Emeline might have been alive hundreds of years, but she’s never really lived. Using her knowledge and research, she helped save the Redwood Pack from devastation. However, she’s never felt whole. Not since she lost her mate so long ago. Now there is a new, younger wolf, entering her life and it will take more than her nose in a book to figure out the warmth in her heart is much more than a promise of a new feeling. It’s fate.

Noah has known Emeline was his mate since he first saw her, only he doesn’t know if she feels the same. He’s always been on the fringes of those in power in the Pack and has enjoyed it. Now he’s become an integral piece and wants to find a way to bring Emeline with him. Her reluctance in dating a much younger wolf isn’t the only hurdle in his way.

When he finally takes the step, he’ll have to pray she finds the connection and lets fate save them both. As they find their way to a mating bond, a player from the past is out to hold them back and everything they thought they’d had might be lost forever.

Dante’s Circle Book 7

Humans aren’t as alone as they choose to believe. Every human possesses a trait of supernatural that lays dormant within their genetic make-up. Centuries of diluting and breeding have allowed humans to think they are alone and untouched by magic. But what happens when something changes?

Eliana Sawyer’s life was rocked from its foundation twice in as many years. She risked her heart and had it shattered into a thousand pieces when Malik left her with no warning. While she’d normally raise her chin and ignore the pain, she can’t forget what he gave her before he disappeared from her life.

Malik Ward is a prince amongst the lion shifters and knows that one day he will have to take a mate. Only, his people can never mate with humans. Under the mistaken impression that Eliana was only human, he forced himself to leave before they’d crossed a line and he broke his vow to his people. Now that he knows the truth about Eliana, however, it will take more than groveling to win back the one woman fated to be his.

While Eliana and Malik embark on a new sensuous path that might lead to disaster, the realms aren’t ready to allow the final lightning-struck human to be enveloped into their fold. The couple will have to combat those plotting against them, as well as the broken promises and heated emotions they share.

Warning: Contains a Leo with a bite that’s worse than his roar, a woman with one last chance at the life she’s always dreamt of, a flame that could extinguish with the wrong sacrifice, and the final journey in the bestselling Dante’s Circle series.

Audio Book Lovin’ presents: A spotlight feature on Luke Daniels

Audiobook 2016

Viviana, Enchantress of Books and I are super excited to feature Luke Daniels again during our 2nd annual Audio Book Lovin’ Series.  If you didn’t know this already.  Luke Daniels narrators one of my most favorite series.  It is a little gem call the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne.  But Luke narrates for many many other authors.  So let me first introduce you to the one and only Luke Daniels.

Luke DanielsLuke Daniels was born into a family of actors. Both his father and mother have been performing and teaching for almost five decades. It is because of their influence that, from a very young age, Luke and his two brothers often found themselves in rehearsal halls at repertory theatres all over the country; watching innumerable productions of Much Ado, Julius Caesar, and Midsummer’s.

Luke’s first theatrical role came at the age of 5 as Fleance in a production of Macbeth. He immediately loved the creativity and camaraderie of the theatre. (It also didn’t hurt that he was allowed to miss school for certain performances.)

Over the years Luke has performed at many repertory theatres across the country, including the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Connecticut Rep., and Hope Summer Rep. in Holland, Michigan. Luke has his Bachelor’s from Western Michigan University and his MFA in performance from the University of Connecticut.

Luke has worked professionally as a director, teacher, audiobook narrator, voice-over, commercial, and industrial actor.

But he maintains that the greatest role he has ever played is that of a Father to his kids.
You can find Luke at Website | Facebook | Twitter | Audible | Tantor

13178027_10209242369365798_6680260272241675297_n

It is that time of year again when I get to tell you all about my love of audio books.  To start, thank you for stopping by the blog and checking out our second annual Audio Book Lovin’ series.  Last year was so much fun.  We got to talk to authors, narrators, and publishers all about the ins and outs of the Audio Book world.   We learned that some authors have no contact with the narrators and some author do everything from pick the narrator to helping with edits.

Last year made me realize just how much work goes into an audio book.  It is not as simple as just sit down and read aloud. Which is a good thing because no one wants to hear me read them a book (mark that off the list of possible jobs).

Which brings me back to why I love audio books.  I have found that my free time is getting less and less with each day.  Audio books give me a way to read/listen to my favorite authors and find a new author all while driving to and from work.  Which seems to be my only down time these days.    Plus it makes the commute so much better.

Audio books are a great way to introduce people an author, narrator or series that you love.   I know personally that there are any series that had I not picked them up on audio and listen to some amazing authors I am not sure I would have loved the books so much.

Last year I did a post on my Top 5 reasons I love audio books (check it out HERE).

I know that there are people out there that say they can’t or won’t listen to audiobooks.  They have all kinds of reasons. Everything from they are too expensive to the narrator doesn’t sound like I envisioned that character.  I say to them….. Just try one.  You never know.  You might actually just like them.   Ask people for recommendations. Go on to audible and listen to the samples.  Speaking of Audible.  Did you know that your 1st book is free when you sign up?  See it is a win win!!!

Alright, since you are here you either love audiobooks or you’re interested in audiobooks.  Tell me what you love about them and which narrators or author would you recommend to people who are on the audible fence.
