Audio Book Lovin’ Presents: Guest Blogger Tara Lain + a giveaway

Audiobook 2016

Viviana, Enchantress of Books and I are excited to have Tara Lain guest blogging on our second annual Audio Book Lovin’ series.   So with our further ado I turn the blog over to Tara.

Audiobooks – My Secret Heath Weapon

Hi! I’m so happy to be a part of this great audiobook event. My thanks to Enchantress of Books and Books n’ Kisses for inviting me. Audiobooks are my secret health weapon! Now, I know all of you are audiobook lovers, so this will be no revelation to you, but for me – well, I’m a johnny-come-lately in the audiobook health department.

A number of years ago, I used to go to an office every day and I loved to listen to audiobooks in my car. I especially loved the Great Courses and would work my way through amazing lectures on opera and the history of China and great authors of America with a smile on my face – even though I was caught in Southern California traffic! Then my life shifted and I got to work from home about 95% of the time. Away went the driving – and the audiobooks. I totally got out of the habit. One day a half year ago or so, I saw someone on Facebook extolling the virtues of listening to audiobooks while walking. Hmm. Sounded interesting, but I knew so little about audiobooks I wasn’t even sure how one got a book to a place where you could listen to it. I went to Audible. I figured I had a bunch of books on audio by this time and I should be supporting the audiobook market! I signed up. Chose a couple books. Presto, like magic they appeared on my phone. The next time I went for a walk, I plugged in my earphones, grabbed my phone and – cool! I enjoyed my walk a lot.

But many times, I walk with others so no book. Then I went back to the gym in a big way. Hey, if the books were amusing on a walk outside, maybe they’d be even better on the boring treadmill. That did it. I’m now a dedicated audiobook listener at the gym. I don’t have a fancy audio device. I just tuck my phone into my tights (admittedly, a little dorky) and haul butt around the weights, TRX, treadmill, rower, elliptical, et al. Only in my Pilates classes do I leave my earphones off. But, I have a Pilates reformer in my garage. I wasn’t using it because the garage is too boring – no TV, radio, or interesting sights aside from two Priuses – but the magic audiobook has changed all that. I head outside to the garage with a book playing and come back in an hour later exercised and thoroughly entertained. I’ve enjoyed Anne Tenino doing hundreds and Amy Lane through agonizing arm exercises.

I know you’re probably already aware of all this, but maybe I can jog your memory as that Facebook post did for me months ago. Audiobooks make everything better –especially at the gym!

  1. I’ve never actually tried Audio books as I’m on a tight budget and mainly buy E-books they are cheaper. But they do sound great so I’ll have to start a wish list and start collecting!

  2. I can’t use a gym but audio books are great for listening to when crocheting baby blankets for charity – I get so man done whilst my head is away in some great story 😀 In fact I just added Prince of the Playhouse to my Audible library 😀

  3. I tried audiobooks years ago and they just weren’t for me. I had trouble understanding the narrator at times and then once in a while, the book would just cut off. It sounds like they have come a long way and I’ll have to try them again. Thanks for the post. I love Tara Lain and her stories and I’ll have to try them in audiobooks now.

  4. I also listen to audio books while I drive. I like that the narrator gives me a different view of how the characters talk and act. when I have a migraine , I find the narrators soothing so I listen then also. Since I enjoyed Tara’s books reading them I am sure I will love them in audio. thanks for the chance.

  5. I’m getting in to audiobooks more and more, finding myself really enjoying them. I especially like listening on a quiet day at work to help me stay focused!

  6. I love audios. I’ve never read nor listened to any of your books but I’d love to change that! The samples make me want to listen to more! Thanks for the giveaways!

  7. I would need to get earphone and I am not sure audio book would be enough for me to focus on but would love the chance to find out.

  8. I’ve recently started listening to audiobooks when I walk and it makes a huge difference! I only have a couple so between my drive to/from work and walking, I just switch them out!

  9. I listen to audiobooks while I’m going through my emails, FB etc
I’ve read Knave of Broken Hearts but none of the others (and I haven’t listened to any of them unfortunately)

  10. The samples were great but I stay at home a lot and I’m still trying to figure out when to listen to an audiobook but I really want to so I’m working on it. I would love it if I could get the audiobook to run through my audio receiver, then I could just sit back in the living room and play a simple game and listen to the book. That sounds awesome.

  11. Hi you guys!!! Thank you for all your wonderful comments!! I wish you all great good fortune in the drawing. Isn’t Dreamspinner wonderful to provide these great prizes? : )

  20. I haven’t read this series and my audiobook experience is only the once so far. This sounds interesting, though. I’d like to listen to the full version if I could afford to spend more book money. 🙂

  25. The series sounds great – I have all the books on my TBR list. I have not tried audio books yet (I actually read while on the elliptical trainer), but I think they would be great for exercising and also before going to sleep.

    Thanks!

  28. I have never tried audiobooks and didn’t think I’d be able to since there is never a time I’m in my car without kids. But I really liked Tara’s idea of listening during exercise. I try to read but end up bouncing too much on the elliptical. Hoping to give this a try.

  29. I have the first one in this series waiting for me and I look forward to diving in soon. I have an hour commute to and from work so audiobooks come in handy to pass the time.
