Interview & giveaway with Tes Hilaire

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Tes Hilaire to the blog to chat about her upxoming release of “DELIVER ME FROM TEMPTATION”

Tes, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Of course! First I want to say thanks for having me here today at Books-n-Kisses as I kick-off the preliminary round for the Deliver Me from Temptation book tour. As you can imagine, I’m very excited about its upcoming release and just love to share all the goodies and behind the scenes info with you readers. As for me, I personally don’t find myself quite so interesting. I’m your bona fide soccer mom who spends way too much time carting kids around and volunteering for school activities.  All I can say is it’s a good thing I have a healthy imagination or I think I might just have gone crazy by now navigating the kidlet culture!

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Yes and no… I’ve always written short stories and poems and there is not a time I don’t remember having my nose in a book (my parents had a no books at the table rule), but I also had very practically parents who repeatedly encouraged having a “fallback” career. Still, I will never forget the time in middle school when we had an author come in and speak.  I listened to him and was so inspired I went home and started writing a middle grade novel about a cat who decided to go on a walk-about from his two-legged family. Needless to say, his adventure didn’t go so well—probably because I stopped less than half-way through—and after realizing that writing was actually work, and that career success was even more difficult (this from that inspiring author’s own mouth), I decided my parents might have a good idea with that fallback career advice!

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

My day stars with typical mom things: get the kids ready, make lunches, see them to the bus; but after I normally settle in for a good few hours of writing.  It’s a tossup to see if I actually get those hours as there is usually some bit of business that needs to be taken care of, but if I do make it through, I normally take a break for some email, social media, and a get the creative-juices flowing shower (trust me, showers work wonders when you’re stuck) then either take off on mom errands or, if I’m really lucky, get right back to the grind and write some more.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

The most challenging is when I just can’t see the scene. I know something has to happen to get my hero/heroine from A to B but there is something about the setting or the interaction or even the plot seems off.  Conversely this is also the most rewarding part about writing. When that scene finally does fall into place and you read it over and go “Yes! That’s it!” it gives me some much energy and inspiration to keep on going and finish their story.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

I thought you’d never ask! 😉  Deliver Me from Temptation is the second book in the Paladin Warriors novels. It is stand alone, but I personally recommend you read book one first as it ties in some various plot threads started there. Not to mention that Logan, the hero, played a pretty prominent part in Deliver Me from Darkness and I don’t know about you readers, but I can never get enough of my heroes 😉  Anyway, this is Logan’s story. He’s the last full-blooded Paladin and has pretty much determined that he’s never going to find his mate.  First there is so much to do he doesn’t have much time to look and second there aren’t that many eligible Paladin women out there. Needless to say it’s a bit of a shocker when he falls hard for a very stubborn and very human cop, especially when she ends up embroiled in the type of mess that is better off left to a Paladin to take care off.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

This story just sort of unfolded naturally after Deliver Me from Darkness. Because this is part of a series, there are always interesting subplots and thread lines that are being developed within each novel. In book one there was a secondary character that met with a pretty final end. The problem was, when his body turned up (between books one and two) our hero from book one, Roland, was the last person to be seen with him.  Logan, being his best friend, and fixer of many messes naturally stepped in to help, and also stumbled upon his future mate in the process!

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

Oh!  I’d love too J  I am currently working on book three for the series. Deliver Me from Death will come out sometime next fall and will bring back two characters that I’ve had many upon many requests from readers to see again.  I’m just finishing my first round of edits now but I can tell you that having both Gabriella and Valin on the pages together has been often trying, sometimes explosive, and overall downright fun.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

When I’m looking for dark and intense, Karen Marie Moning, Suzanne Brockman, Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Karen Chance are top of my list!

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

Yes!  Those dark and intense authors I mentioned?  Well if you read their books you’ll find them filled with lots of emotion and grit.  For me, writing with that sort of intensity can be hard because I’m always second guessing myself, wondering if this is how the characters would really act or if it’s coming across correctly. In hindsight I realized that in some scenes I just wasn’t meeting the emotional bar I was looking for, so, the one thing I’ve learned from these authors is Don’t Hold Back!  I can always fine tune things later, but it’s really, really difficult to go back and insert intensity into a key scene if it was not there originally.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

Hmmm… okay, page 127 of Deliver Me from Temptation.  This is where our heroine is seriously questioning her sanity. There has been more than one recent event that she knows occurred that she can’t remember the details of and now there is evidence that someone is going around doing a pretty good imitation of a vampire and chowing on her victims necks…

…Sighing, she leaned against the hood of her Chevy. She scrubbed a shaky hand over her face, blinking through her blurry vision at the street before her. On top of the aches and pains from her encounter last night, on top of the perpetual exhaustion, the damn headache had returned. She knew why, of course, and it had little to do with her momentary slip into fantasy land. It was because she was here, staring at the same street she must have driven back home on the other night, and couldn’t remember a fucking thing. If this kept up she was going to have to get a damn MRI to find out what the hell was wrong with her fucking mind. Had she actually witnessed something and couldn’t remember? Was the key to their victim’s killer locked up in her foggy brain?

“I’m a mess,” she grumbled.

“Yeah, you are.”

She jumped, spun…

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Well, a lot of my favorite authors have recently come out with some great things. Gunmetal magic by Ilona Andrews, Iced by Moning, Suzanne Brockmann has another one out to I’m told… The problem is time though! I’m currently in deadline crunch so I’ve been waiting very, very patiently to order my copies as I know I won’t be able to help myself if they are in the house!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes! I wanted to let the readers know that I’m offering up one signed copy of book one Deliver Me from Darkness to one commenter that leaves me a suggestion for the sexiest thing a man could say to his woman! Oh la la 😉

Hi Tes! The book sounds awesome!! Okay, so the sexiest thing a man can say to his woman? Well, if a man calls me “baby” that sure gets my juices going…but I think the sexiest thing a man could say to his woman is, “Honey, let me do the dishes tonight. You deserve a break.” LOL!

But seriously, sexiest thing: leaning down and whispering in my ear…”I want to f*ck you so bad I can’t stand it.”

Thanks for the chance to win your lovely book!

Linda Howard Open Season – big burly chief of police taking his lady’s puppy out in the middle of the night – a naked man & a puppy throw in chocolate – COMPLETE & UTTER BLISS

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 8:51 am #

Pam…I do agree that actions sometimes speak louder than words and a big, burly naked cop certainly sounds sexy to me whether there is chocolate and puppies or not! LOL!

Thanks for a fun post and congrats to Tes on the newest release! I’m dying to read this series!!! Ummm… I think a sexy thing a man could say would be… ” I appreciate and love you!” not epiphany worthy but all I can think of right now 🙂

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 10:32 am #

Erin, I think every woman wants to hear that! At least once a day, right? 🙂

  4. Betty Hamilton November 15, 2012 at 9:22 am #

“Would you like to dance?” Nothing turns me on more than soft slow music in a darken room and a sexy man holding me tight and moving to the slow sexy music.

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 10:34 am #

Hmmm, Betty, I like that! it’s been a while since I’ve danced a slow dance with my man. I think it’s time!

  5. kyla whitley November 15, 2012 at 10:31 am #

“Babe, have I mentioned how sexy you look lying there in our bed, wearing your favorite sweats, reading a book? I just want to take a bite.”

Hey Tes! Thanks for sharing your book. 🙂

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 10:36 am #

Kyla! Oh that’s great. I think I’m going to teach that one to my man and tell him to use it as much as he wants… Anyone wan to bet on the number? (Though I bet we could skew the results if we read the juicy parts aloud 😉

  6. Viki S. November 15, 2012 at 2:33 pm #

“You’re a woman who should never wear make-up. It would take away from your beauty.”
    Thank you.

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 5:52 pm #

Viki, So great you could stop in! Isn’t that so true? sometimes we cover our inner beauty with cosmetics… then there are the other times when we’re just covering sleepy eyes and blemishes! LOL!

  7. Olga November 15, 2012 at 2:52 pm #

The sexiest thing a man could say to his woman was that she is beautiful and she don’t need to change to please him or anyone else.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 5:52 pm #

Perfect, Olga! Thanks for sharing 🙂 And thanks for stopping in.

  8. Raonaid Luckwell November 15, 2012 at 3:47 pm #

Sexist thing a man could say…. Mmm, perhaps “You’ve done enough. Time for a break. Let me massage your feet.” Of course it would start with the feet and escalate to other ventures.. Meh I’m lame at this..

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 5:53 pm #

Raonaid… nope, I think that sounds like the perfect start to a seductive evening 😉 Thanks for the idea… I’m going to go mention it to my man now! 😉

  9. Barb P November 15, 2012 at 3:51 pm #

Hi Tes! Probably the sexiest thing I could hear (especially today ** sigh **) is Honey, you just sit there and I’ll make dinner (while handing me a lovely glass of wine)! That sounds extremely sexy to me today. Congrats on the new release! I can’t wait to read it!

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 5:54 pm #

Making dinner? Wine? Definitely music to my ears 🙂 I must admit, my man did make me dinner tonight.. soup, to go with this flu I have going. Oy! I’ll let you have that wine for me, k?

  10. Phoenix Carvelli November 15, 2012 at 3:55 pm #

While holding newborn daughter, “She is almost as beautiful as her mother.”

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 5:55 pm #

Aw! The man who says that is definitely a keeper Phoenix.. especially if the mother looks as terrible as I did after child birth! 😉

  11. Sheryl N November 15, 2012 at 4:43 pm #

I think it would be “I love you more than anything else and you complete me.” I think that I would be happy hearing my husabnd say that you can take a night off honey, I will take care of everyhitng. Sigh….

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 5:57 pm #

Sheryl, agreed! Too bad Tom Cruise already stole that line in Jerry Macguire! You have no idea how many times I’ve started to write “you complete me” then had to delete 🙂

  12. Victoria Zumbrum November 15, 2012 at 5:27 pm #

The sexiest thing a man can say to a woman is you are my heart and soul and without you I am nothing. Thanks for the giveaway. Tore923@aol.com

Victoria! YES! You and my Paladin men agree whole heartedly! Thanks for stopping in 🙂

  13. Nicole Nobles November 15, 2012 at 5:28 pm #

I am probably a little too simple…lol! I, myself, would like a man to walk up with lust in his eyes and just growl right before he picks me up. Lol! Like I said, probably a little too easy there, although I snatched up my hubby because he can:)

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 5:59 pm #

Nicole, sometimes actions speak louder than words, and if your hubby does that on a regular basis (or even an irregular one!) I think you can consider yourself cherished! Thanks for sharing!

  14. Ginger Robertson November 15, 2012 at 6:54 pm #

    Hi Tes,
Thanks for sharing details about your books and yourself.
What I think is beautiful coming from a guy is to get his lady and snuggle with her on the couch just listening to background music and relaxing from the hectic pace that we all keep. Slow it down.
    Thank you
    Ginger.

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 8:40 pm #

Ginger… oh yes! I could definitely use some of that slow it down loving 🙂 Is it really almost 11pm? I have so much more to do before my day starts tomorrow at 5:30! Ekk!

  17. Christy Perry November 15, 2012 at 7:41 pm #

Can’t wait to read the book, sounds amazing! I think the sexiest thing a man can say to a woman would have to be when he first opens his eyes in the morning, as he awakens his gaze clears and he has that growly, gravely, early morning voice and says ” you are really here”…..now that is hawt! Thanks for the chance to win 🙂

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 8:43 pm #

Oh… can I use that one Christy? JK, kinda 😉 That’s a good one. Thanks for sharing!

  18. Ruth S November 15, 2012 at 7:51 pm #

With him holding you tight and close he looks into your eyes and says how beautiful you are. Then he kisses you deeply.

    • Tes Hilaire November 15, 2012 at 8:43 pm #

Ah, Ruth, I think you got it. Sometimes it’s the simple and sincere displays that count the most, right?

  19. Barbara Elness November 15, 2012 at 9:06 pm #

The sexiest thing a man can say to his woman is, “I made dinner, sit down, relax and eat. Don’t worry, I’ll do the dishes too.” 😀 I love a man who can cook, since it isn’t something I like to do.

  20. Mary Preston November 16, 2012 at 12:16 am #
