Afraid To Scream

Others may dread the chill of winter, but he relishes it. The way the frigid water preserves his victims, the feel of their icy skin beneath his fingers… And soon the world will see their beauty—and his vengeance.

Afraid To Run

The town of Grizzly Falls is on edge in the wake of a serial killer, and Detective Selena Alvarez is no exception. That case was solved, but a new nightmare is about to unfold. There are two victims so far—their bodies found frozen solid and deliberately displayed. Both are women she knew. And each wears a piece of Selena’s jewelry…

Afraid To Die

Selena’s partner, Detective Regan Pescoli, and the entire department are on the case, as is P.I. Dylan O’Keefe—a man Selena got too close to once before. But this killer already knows too much about Selena’s secret terror, her flaws, and the past she’s tried to outrun. And soon he’ll show her that she has every reason to be afraid…

Excerpt:

Stop it! It’s Christmas! Again she caught her gaze in the rearview mirror and again she saw the anger that seemed to be forever lurking just beneath the surface of her gaze. It was something she was working on. A Christian woman, she believed fervently in forgiveness. She just couldn’t find it in her heart when it came to Ray.

Someday it might happen, she thought, once she found another man to fix the sagging porch, replace the old pipes under the sink and hold her long into the night. Oh, what she wouldn’t do to find a real Prince Charming the second time around. At forty-two she wasn’t ready to give up on love.

Well, at least not yet.

The residential houses gave way to countryside, where snow covered the surrounding fields and drifted against the fence posts. Even the skeletal brambles and berry vines took on an unlikely serenity with the snowfall.

As she turned off the main road, she noticed a car parked at the side of the road. Its hood was lifted, a man peering at the engine. She slowed, the beams of her headlights catching him in their glare. He waved, flagging her down, and she told herself to be careful, then she recognized him as a regular customer at the restaurant and as a member of the church.

Slowing, she rolled down her window as he scurried through the piling snow to the driver’s side.

“Hey,” she said. “You got a problem?”

“Darned thing just died on me,” he said “and I left my cell phone at home. Can’t call my wife.”

“I could call her.”

“That would be great.” He flashed the smile she’d always found endearing. “Or maybe I should?”

“Sure.” Turning, she reached into her bag, found her cell and said, “I know it’s about out of battery life, but it should work…” As she straightened again, she was making certain the phone was on when she felt something cold against her neck. “Wha—” A second later, pain scorched through her body. She screamed and twitched, losing all control as he pressed the trigger on his stun gun. Dear Lord, help me, she thought, jerking and trying to scream. Her phone slipped from her palsied fingers, and horrified, she watched helplessly, unable to fight as he unlocked her door, bumping his head on the frame and losing his hat for a second, before he hauled her into the cold weather. She tried to fight, to punch and kick and bite, but all her efforts were futile as her mind could not control her twitching, useless body.

No, no, no! This can’t be happening.

She trusted this man, knew him from church, and yet he was coldly throwing her into the backseat of his sedan and locking the door. She was helpless to do anything to save herself. The world was spinning, her body flopping on the vinyl of his backseat, and for a few minutes he left her alone in the frigid car only to show up, get behind the wheel and drive in the same direction she’d been heading.

Why? Her mind screamed but she had no control of her tongue, couldn’t say a word, and listened feebly as he snapped on the radio and an instrumental version of “Silent Night” filled the interior.

Oddly, he didn’t bother with the heater, and as the miles rolled under the car’s tires, Brenda wondered where he was taking her and, oh, God, what he planned to do to her.

He’s a Christian man. This is just a prank, she tried to convince herself, but she knew, deep in her heart, that whatever was in store for her tonight, it wouldn’t be good.

Over the strains of the Christmas carol, Mildred’s theory echoed through her mind, haunting in its precise prediction:

The devil’s behind this!

He’s always there, y’know, Satan, he’s just over your shoulder, waiting to pounce

Interview & Giveaway with Kira Brady

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome for the first time Kira Brady.   We are chatting about her new Deadglass Trilogy.   Please make Kira feel welcome.  We have a special little treat for you at the very end of the interview!!!!

Kira, can you please share with us a little about yourself.

I’m a vegetarian tree-hugger from Seattle who enjoys hiking through gloomy forests in persistent drizzle, wearing wool sweaters year round, and marveling over all to brief sun-breaks. I moved to Philadelphia for college, because the day I visited campus, it rained. Unfortunately, this was a cruel joke. It’s always sunny in Philadelphia. After graduation from the University of Pennsylvania, I quickly ran back home, where you can now find me huddled against the oppressive grey skies with a book, a mug of tea, my story-loving toddler, and my handsome hero.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Only in elementary school. After that I came to the conclusion that an author was someone who enjoyed picking apart great literature like Camus’ The Stranger and Conrad’s Heart of Darkness—this was obviously not the path for me. I was in graduate school for city planning when I finally decided I’d rather write about imaginary cities than stamp development applications.

Are you a plotter or a panster? And you explain the difference?

I started off pansting, which meant I had a vague notion of my beginning, middle, and end, but no clear idea of how to get from A to B to C. It meant that I wrote about twice as many words as ended up in the final book. My process has thankfully evolved to plotting. The third book in the trilogy, Hearts of Chaos, I plotted out scene by scene with my critique partner before I started writing a word of it. It has been much more fun, and less frustrating, to write!

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

Even though I love writing, I have an awful time sitting down to the blank page. I need to use two special programs to keep me focused: Write or Die is a program where I enter my time or word goal for a session, and, if I stop writing, it will 1) flash red, 2) start playing a siren, and finally 3) delete my words. That’s motivation to keep going! I usually write in 1000 word sprints, which I can do in about 40 minutes to an hour. Mac Freedom shuts down the internet on my computer.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Hearts of Darkness is the first book in the Deadglass Trilogy. It’s set in a gritty alternate Seattle where two shapeshifter races fight over the cracked Gate to the Land of the Dead. A human woman who doesn’t believe in the supernatural must team up with an outcast mercenary werewolf to find her sister’s killer before the Gates open and all hell breaks loose.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I took the Pike Place Market Ghost Tour, which told about the founding of Seattle on liquor, whores, and gambling, and the ghosts that haunt our present day city. The historic landmark Butterworth Mortuary was featured on the tour, and it struck my imagination. There’s this spooky quote from Chief Seattle about the dead haunting the living. He also said, “There is no Death, only a change of worlds.” Thus the sinfully haunted Seattle of the Deadglass was born.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m finishing up the last book in the trilogy, Hearts of Chaos.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I’d love to meet the ghost of J.M. Barrie. Peter Pan was my favorite story as a kid. I can sing you every Broadway song and quote you random passages.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Write every day. Don’t think about writing. Don’t talk about writing. Don’t blog about writing. Just write. Write the story idea you have all the way through to completion, and then start the next one. The only way to learn how to write is to do it, and do it frequently. Give yourself permission to suck on the first draft. I really love Write or Die for this.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?

Hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

What is in your “To Read Pile” that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Kristin Cashore’s Bitterblue, Karina Cooper’s Tarnished, and Meljean Brook’s Riveted.

What is one book everyone should read before they die?

One??? Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney

What is your favorite time of year & why?

I’d say summer, but it’s currently 66 degrees and overcast. 😛 August is a beautiful month in Seattle. The rest of the year it rains. That said I really love Halloween. It’s all about the challenge of designing a fabulous waterproof costume.

Who is your celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet them?

I have a huge crush on this tech blogger and evangelist. He’s a celebrity in certain geek circles. If I ever meet him, I’d probably ask him to have my babies.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you for having me!

Spotlight Feature of The Chocolate Theif

The Chocolate Thief

Breathtakingly beautiful, the City of Light seduces the senses, its cobbled streets thrumming with possibility. For American Cade Corey, it’s a dream come true, if only she can get one infuriating French chocolatier to sign on the dotted line…

Chocolate

Melting, yielding yet firm, exotic, its secrets are intimately known to Sylvain Marquis. But turn them over to a brash American waving a fistful of dollars? Jamais. Not unless there’s something much more delectable on the table…

Stolen Pleasure

Whether confections taken from a locked shop or kisses in the dark, is there anything sweeter?

Excerpt:

American chocolate heiress Cade Corey will do anything to learn the secrets of Sylvain Marquis,  the dark, arrogant chocolatier who has ensorcelled all of Paris.  From attempts at outright purchase (denied, because he considers himself beyond price), to spying, perhaps even to a descent into crime.  Here, Sylvain discovers her attempting to sneak into one of his workshops in disguise and decides that, after all, maybe she deserves a lesson…

“This is one of my favorite moments,” Sylvain murmured to her, his voice a brush of sound, too low for anyone but her.  “The chocolate is untouched, virgin.”  Chocolat, he said.  Not that clumsy, cute English word “chok-lat” but a caress, a mystery, sho-co-la.  “I choose it.  It is beautiful as it is, perfect, anyone could eat it forever.  And I bring something else to it, blend it with another flavor that makes people encounter it in a new way, a richer way.”

His voice burred over her skin.  All the fine hairs on her arms raised to that voice and to the words that seemed to talk about more than chocolate.  Made her want to be his chocolate.

“I pour it into another form worthy of it, something as beautiful as its essence, so that just looking at it fills people with desire.”

She realized her lips had parted, her breath grown shallow.  She kept her lashes lowered, her gaze focused on that dark block in his hand.  On his strong square palms, on the long, adept fingers.

Tenez.”   He lifted a shaving on one finger and brought it to her lips.  “Goûtez,” he said.  “Tell me what you taste.”

The chocolate was melting already on her parted lips.  She took it, perforce, her lips closing just barely, just briefly on his.  She tasted…she didn’t think she should tell him what she tasted.  It went beyond the chocolate, which was bitter, bitter on her tongue but extraordinarily smooth.

“What do you like in your chocolat, mademoiselle?”  He poured white cream into a small pot as he spoke to her and added inverted sugar.

“Cinnamon,” she said.

Cannelle?”  He gave her a little smile, as if she had charmed him.

Charmed him how?  Like a quaint child whose hair he wanted to ruffle?

Vous aimez la tradition,” he said.

Yes, she supposed.  Corey prided itself on being the chocolate of generations of Americans, and it had never once changed its original milk chocolate bar.  So that was tradition.  And the only way she wanted to break that Corey tradition was by sinking into a realm of chocolate that had been expert before her country was born.

“Then we shall make you something with cinnamon.”  He moved away to the shelves where the brown bottles were, grabbing a handful of cinnamon sticks.  On his way back to her, he picked up a brick of butter that had been set out to soften.  “Say it again in English?”

“Cinnamon,” she repeated helplessly.

Heat leaped in his eyes.  “It has a je ne sais quoi to it in English, cinnamon.  More mystery, more exotic, than in French.”

Tenez.”  He handed her the cinnamon sticks and nodded to the pot of cream.  She dropped them in it, watching white drops splash over the brown of the sticks.  “A feu doux.”  He caught her eyes just for a second.  “One must start à feu doux.

With a gentle flame.

If this was gentle, she didn’t know whether to crave high heat or be terrified of it.

A Force Of Nature
Ree O’Connor is more than she seems to be. Despite her delicate appearance and her broken heart, she sees what others don’t. In fact, she is an agent of a clandestine world court, about to bring down a monster when a stranger springs her trap instead. The mistake nearly costs Ree not only her prey, but her life, too–until mysterious Alexandros spirits her to an underwater world she never suspected, even with all her secret knowledge.
As a prince of Atlantis, Alexandros has centuries of experience in love and battle. His magic draws from the power of the ocean itself, and he can be just as beguiling–and just as unfathomable. Could any man heal Ree enough to become more than a sometime lover? And can she trust her heart to a soldier-prince of the deep?

Excerpt:

Nick . . .

The pain tore at her, ripped and chewed with savage ferocity.  Ree opened her mouth to scream but nothing came out.  Her skin was on fire . . . her tongue swollen and dry.  If she believed in hell, she could have believed that she’d died and ended up there.  But she didn’t . . . she’d given up believing in anything when she was six years old.

Flash!  The pictures were back, jerking across a tattered gray screen.  A ship’s galley.  Flash! Nick’s head on the pillow next to hers.  Flash! A cavalcade of black limousines and the cloying scent of lilies.

“No!”

Nick’s arms were around her, lifting her, carrying her.  His mouth covered hers in a searing kiss of passion as a wall of water engulfed them.  She wasn’t afraid.  The water felt good on her hot skin; it soothed the raw ache that gnawed at her stomach and sent shards of glass through her head.  She felt the water on her parched lips, tasted the salt, and inhaled the cool moisture deep into her lungs.

The blackness came and went, came and went.  In between, she thought she saw impossible scenes around her . . . walls of ancient cities, fallen columns, and a road of giant blocks of stone that stretched out to the curve of the earth.  Swaying forests of green kelp rose around them.  Red and yellow, blue, and purple fish darted and floated between the leafy fronds of foliage.  Massive creatures slid past amid the haunting songs of ghostly leviathans.

She had so many questions she wanted to ask Nick.  Why was his hair so light and how had his beautiful brown eyes turned to green?  How had he found her on the deck of the Anastasiya and why was she so thirsty?  But, try as she might, no sounds would pass her lips.

She wanted to wrap her arms around his neck and feel his mouth on hers, but she found it impossible to break free from her crystalline prison.  And this time, when the dark tide threatened to sweep over her, she didn’t fight it.  Nick was here, and he would take care of her.  If Nick had found her, everything would be all right.

She opened her eyes to see a wall of molten lava erupting from the forest around them.  Heat flashed against her skin, and she clamped her eyes shut against the glare.  But not before she’d seen the impossible, seen the tattooed men with their flashing spears and heard their hideous war cries.

“Don’t be afraid,” Nick said, and this time, it seemed that she heard his voice in her head.  “I won’t let them hurt you.”

Why would they hurt me? she wondered.  They aren’t real.  Any minute the piano will begin to play and the Little Tramp will throw his hat and knock them all down. They will fall like dominoes. Flash.  Flash.  Flash.

Nicole wrenched her head away from him. She was breathing hard, her breath rasping.  “What the hell was that?”

Keenan blinked, then let his eyes narrow. His cheeks seemed to burn as he stared down at her. “I bled for you. I thought a kiss was the least I deserved as payment.”

She jerked from his hold but only because he let her go.  “You thought wrong.”

“Didn’t you kiss your other prey?” And that had the rage stirring again. So many emotions churned inside him now.  Sometimes it seemed as if they’d rip him apart.  “Weren’t you rubbing against them, promising sex, when you—”

“I wasn’t going to sleep with them!” Her hands flew up into the air, and he saw the small, deadly claws on the ends of her fingers.  “I didn’t want to scare them, so I was…” She broke off and shook her head. “Never mind. I don’t have to explain myself to you.”

“You were seducing them.”  The words fell between them.  He lifted a brow. “You think seducing the blood away is any better than holding down your prey and just taking what you want?”

She flinched. “Maybe I don’t have a choice.” Nicole spun around and gave him one truly glorious view of her butt as she stormed away.

But she wasn’t really going anywhere. They weren’t done.

“Why didn’t you try seducing me?”  Probably not what he should have asked then, but…did she not find him appealing at all?

Perhaps the kiss had been wrong. He, too, could try seduction instead of force.  If it worked for her…

“There’s no point in seducing hunters.” She threw this over her shoulder. “You’d screw me, then still kill me.”

Maybe. But… “If you walk away from me now, you will die.”

Those words stopped her.  She glanced back. “That’s a threat, huh? What are you gonna do? Jump me?  I’m not so easy to take down.”

She would be.

“I’m not the threat right now.” Keenan went closer because her scent drew him in.  Lush woman.  But, also, something else. Soft. Light.  A wisp of…vanilla?

“You look like a threat to me,” she said, turning slowly to face him.

He was a threat. “In about five minutes, more of Romeo’s friends will be here. I told them to stay away.” Keenan tilted his head and his nostrils flared.  “But I don’t guess they listened.”

She licked her lips, a fast flash of pink tongue. “Romeo?  Who’s that?”

His jaw tightened. “The first idiot you had ready to donate blood tonight.” Keenan guessed he counted as idiot number three. “I took down him and his men, but I didn’t kill them.” He hadn’t touched any of them with his hands because he’d been afraid that one touch would shove them all straight to hell.

But that particular power was gone.  A very, very good thing.

“You walk away,” he continued, “and they’ll have you long before you can make it to that broken down Chevy.”

Excerpt:

“Shiarra, I didn’t think I’d ever see you again.  Not in daylight.”

I forced a thin smile.  “No need to worry about that. I’m not planning on turning into a walking corpse anytime soon.”  No, I just might turn into something else. Something worse.

“Why are you here?”

“I’m here to ask for your help.  There isn’t an easy way for me to say this, and I’m too tired for tact.  There’s a chance I might become a Were at the next full moon.”

Nikki stared.  Jack said nothing, a tic starting in his cheek.

“I came here because someone from my ex’s pack might have infected me.  I want to find him.  I want to make him and the rest of the Sunstrikers pay.”  I left out the part about what Chaz had done.  He might have been the alpha of the Sunstriker pack, but he was a poor decision maker, and I wanted cheating on me to be the last mistake he ever made.  “There are people after me, including police.  If I do turn into one of… into an Other at the end of the month, I know I can trust you to end it.  Until then, I need a place to stay, and someone to work with me to find where the Weres are hiding.  Will you help me?”

Nikki’s wide-eyed stare grew into a rather unbecoming gawp that made me want to walk over to shut her mouth, if only my feet didn’t hurt so much.

For his part, Jack wasn’t showing any emotion.  His only reaction was to lift one hand to rub at the pale stubble on his jaw.  I think it’s the first time I’d ever seen him anything but clean-shaven.

He edged around Nikki and rested both palms flat on the display case as he loomed over it.  The intensity of his gaze was a bit much, and I found I couldn’t meet his eyes directly as he examined me.

“You realize what you’re asking?  You know what we’ll do if you turn?”

That question gave me enough courage to meet his eyes again.  “Yes, I know.  I’m counting on it.”

His smile, white and shark-like, sent a shiver down my spine.  “Welcome to the White Hats.”
