Excerpt:

“Are your works always so intricate?”

She shakes her head, again scanning the tower, though my eyes stay on her. “Frescoes are always detailed and hard work, but this is way above and beyond. Layering in kinetic elements to give moving light and dimensional depth is my dream project come true. Most of my projects are just frescoes.”

“Just frescoes.” I laugh. “They’re noble and valiant relics in the art world.”

“They’re actually in high demand.” Her tone is matter-of-fact. “Though few people can afford them.”

“Well, you’ve outdone yourself here,” I affirm. Her smile is sincere, her pride evident, elegant, enchanting.

“It’s taken quite a long time to come together, and I’ve left the plasterer more than a little frustrated on several occasions.”

“I can’t imagine him staying angry for long….”

“They’ve given me deep creative license over the project, so that’s saved my ass a couple of times. It’s kind of mind-blowing to work on something so limitlessly funded.”

Our eyes lock for mere seconds and the silence is disturbing. “I was just going for a bite to eat. Would you care to join me?”

Cass nods. “I’d like to, but I need to finish this section. This medium doesn’t wait well.”

She’s genuinely interested and I want her to be. I want her to be as affected as I am. Before I can prod further she asks, “Maybe another time?”

Reluctantly, I follow her to the elevator. She opens it with a pass card attached to a cord coiled on the drawstring of her pants. My eyes linger on the brilliant green gem in her navel.

“What’s your name?”

“Asif,” I reply without hesitating. The sound is bare, like a secret revealed, though I don’t understand why. I always use my real name.

“Another time, Asif.”

The doors slide closed, and I agree.

About the Author:

Mezzofiction author, Fierce is imagination shapeshifted as a scribe taunting blank pages and carpal tunnel, neither of which are much use for deadlines. Close allies are impeccable timing and a trusty masseuse. Being a switch I/ENFP doesn’t hurt. For kicks Fierce has other personas across several genres, tends to fill in “Other” on surveys without explaining, and chooses the finality of the Japanese Tamagotchi.

In summary: Fierce writes all kind of dirty things that you probably shouldn’t ever read…

Spotlight Feature of At Sunset by Tamaria Soana

At Sunset

Two women, Myrtle Beach, sexy lifeguards—what more could a girl ask for?

Kimberly doesn’t believe she could attract the handsome lifeguard sitting on the stand keeping a keen eye on the beach patrons. Muscular, lean and sexy, surely he’s not looking at her, but when a beach accident brings them eye-to-eye, she finds herself lost in his gaze.

Daniel works everyday watching the beach-goers, keeping an eagle eye out for problems along the white sandy shores. Sexy women capture his attention on a daily basis, but no one grabs him like Kimberly. Gorgeous and curvy in all the right places, he can’t seem to keep his mind on the business at hand as she tans herself in the hot summer sun.

Can the pain of past relationships be overcome for two strangers to find love at Sunset?

Excerpt

Kim sat up after about an hour to grab the water bottle out of her bag. She looked around and noticed the lifeguard glancing in their direction. Obviously, he was looking at Amber. No one ever noticed her when Amber was around. Amber was drop-dead gorgeous, with a killer body, and Kim thought of herself as just an average looking girl. She was five foot three with light brown wavy hair, hazel eyes, and a small frame. She felt that her breasts were too small, and she hated that her body didn’t really have many curves. At twenty years old, she wished her body was more shapely. Out of the corner of her eye she watched the beautiful blond lifeguard scan the crowd as she pulled her hair up into a bun.

“Amber, I think that blond lifeguard over there likes you. He keeps looking over here,” Kim said, as she nudged her friend out of her sleepy state.

“Who? What? Where?” Amber replied, looking around as she sat up.

“Over there.” Kim pointed just as he turned his head and caught her pointing at him. She  ducked her head and blushed in embarrassment.

“Um, Kim, I think the hot lifeguard likes you,” Amber giggled.

“I…I don’t think so. No one’s ever interested in me.”

“Kim, stop it. You’re beautiful. For some reason you’ve never understood that.”

Kim shook her head. Amber just didn’t understand because she was beautiful and men noticed her all of the time. “There is no way he would be interested in me. Just look at him. He could have any girl here.”

“Yes, he could, but he seems to have his eyes on you.”

Kim was happy when Amber dropped the subject. She adjusted herself on the blanket and closed her eyes. Images of the blond lifeguard fluttered through her mind. She sighed as she pushed all thoughts of him away. Guys like him never went for girls like her. Kim couldn’t settle her mind down and get comfortable; she needed to get away from what was causing her to feel so flustered.

“I’m hungry and I think I’m beached out for the day,” Amber stated as she sat up.

“Me too. Let’s call it a day and get something to eat. Maybe we can play miniature golf tonight or something.”

As Kim and Amber were packing up, Amber poked her.

“What the hell, Amber? That hurt.”

“Look! Mister hot, blond lifeguard guy is watching you. You should go talk to him.”

“Have you lost your mind?”

“You need to live a little and take some chances.’

“Whatever.”

“You’re impossible. I hope he’s working tomorrow, because you need to meet him.”

“Why? We live states away from each other. Even if he was interested, why bother?”

“Oh Kim, you’re so in need of a hot summer fling. When was the last time you got—”

“Shut up!”

Kim was seething. She loved Amber but the girl never knew when to stop pushing. Amber looked at her and just shook her head.

“You know the best way to get over a guy is to get under another,” Amber said for the umpteenth time as they headed toward the rental car.

“Really Amber, your advice to me is to get laid? So having sex with some random guy will magically heal my heart and make forget about Michael?” Kim snapped.

“I’m sorry. I’m only trying to help.”

“I know, and I love you for it. Just back off.”

Spotlight Feature: Nadia Scorvia

Drowning Mermaids

Deep under Arctic waters lies an ice kingdom carved into a glacier. Those who dwell within it possess magnificent biological secrets. Due to the dangers of impending war, the Princess of Adlivun is forced to flee her undersea utopia and regroup with her sisters in Alaska.

Captain Trevain Murphy is a successful king crab fisherman who has spent his life building his empire above the sea, and knows nothing of the empire beneath it. When he meets a mysterious dancer whose father has recently died, he extends kindness towards her, unaware of her unique genetics and royal lineage.

Trevain’s attraction to the enigmatic Aazuria Vellamo will involve him in dangerous designs that will forever change his life, and his perspective on himself and his world. He embarks on perilous journeys in which he will need to release all of his insecurities and inhibitions in order to survive.

Fathoms of Forgiveness

There is no divorce in the undersea kingdom of Adlivun. Marriage is a bond that lasts until death—even if death comes in several centuries, and in that time your spouse happens to become your sworn enemy. This is the conflict that General Visola Ramaris faces when she learns that the mighty Vachlan is behind the attacks on her kingdom. She has sworn to protect Adlivun with her life, but long ago, she also swore to love and honor her husband…

Visola must choose whether she will destroy Vachlan once and for all, or attempt the hardest thing conceivable: communication. After two hundred years of desertion, she has no faith in their feeble bond and knows she can never forgive him. When he threatens the person dearest to her, she must take action. Confronting Vachlan on enemy territory would be nothing short of suicide. She knows that if she falls into his custody, the deranged man would relish breaking her down and making her lose her sanity.

Princess Aazuria forbids Visola from taking matters into her own hands; she will do anything it takes to protect her friend from the man who wants to crush her. Alas, Visola is a crazy, uncontrollable warrior woman with the blood of Vikings in her veins. Why would she ever consider doing the safe and predictable thing?

Spotlight Feature of Fragile by Shiloh Walker

Available in trade paperback and digitally. Releasing in mass market summer 2012

Sometimes the last thing you want is exactly what you need…

BATTLE SCARRED

Six years after trading in his combat gear for hospital scrubs, Luke Rafferty still hasn’t found what he’s been searching for: a normal life. At his job, Luke is faced with things just as heartbreaking as those on the battlefield, none more so than the abused children brought in by a pretty red-headed social worker.

HEARTBROKEN

For Devon Manning, being a social worker is a rewarding job, but also a constant reminder of her own troubled youth. Devon takes everything one day at a time—unable to form a relationship with anyone except the children she rescues.

A DESIRE TO HEAL…

When Luke meets Devon, he thinks he might have found what he’s been looking for, but in order to get the life he wants, Luke has to break through Devon’s emotional barriers and make her realize that his healing touch might be just the complication her life needs…

Excerpt:
Luke just shrugged. “Hey, you ought to hear some of the foreign-body stories I could tell you. And being in a college town? It’s even worse.”

Her brow creased. Leery, she repeated, “Foreign bodies?”

He grinned. “You probably don’t want to know. People can do very, very bizarre things—and they don’t even have the excuse of being a kid.”

Now that, Devon understood. She’d had to go to many a home to speak with parents when their kids got hurt doing the normal kid thing. Kids did get hurt, and sometimes, kids hurt themselves in a purely innocent manner, but so often it made neighbors or teachers concerned. As unpleasant as it was, and as much as parents hated it, Devon would rather make those visits than visit the hospital because nobody reported the abuse.

That sobering thought had the smile on her face dying. A hand touched her lightly on the shoulder, a quick, innocuous touch. She looked at Luke to find him studying her. “Where did you go?”

Devon shrugged. “Just thinking. Kids—it’s amazing what they can do. One minute they have you laughing, then you’re ready to pull your hair out and scream, and then you just want to cry.”

“I think you could use a few more of the laughing minutes.”

He lifted his hand, and Devon watched, mesmerized, as he caught a flyaway curl. Her hair was a thick, nearly unmanageable mass of curls. Usually she had it gelled and pulled back into some kind of submission, but at the end of the day the first thing she did was let it out of the twists, clips, and knots she used during the day. Loose, it hung halfway down her back. When it was wet, she could sit on it.

“I don’t suppose you’d take your hair down, would you?” Luke asked, a little out of the blue.

She blinked, tipped back her head to see his face a little better. “Take it down?”

“Yeah.” He continued to rub the curl back and forth between his fi ngers as he lifted his gaze to hers. His eyes were heavy- lidded, giving him a sleepy, sexy look that had her wanting to lean in and kiss him…

Interview & Giveaway with Natalie Anderson

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Natalie Anderson to the blog today.  Natalie can you please share with us a little about yourself

Firstly thanks so much for having me here!  Hmmm, what can I tell you about me… I live in New Zealand, in a city called Christchurch (you may have heard of it in recent times as we’ve had a series of devastating earthquakes). I love New Zealand (it really is Lord of the Rings beautiful). And I love Christchurch especially—it’s my home town, and while it’s hard to see it in its current state—most of the central city/CBD is being demolished, there are just acres of empty spaces now where whole blocks of buildings once were—I want to stay and see it rise strong again. I live here with my husband and four kids. The kids are under ten years and include a set of twins. They’re all gorgeous and maddening and delightful. We’re pretty busy but it’s lots of fun. I travelled a bit in my early twenties (met the Hubster in London actually) – and I still have the bug really… it’s just in hibernation while we get through the ‘school’ years! I love writing, I love reading, I love the movies and I love my regular coffee date with my best girlfriend—we’ve been best buds since we were six… so that’s a fair number of years of friendship now!!!

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Pretty much! I wrote stories as a kid, was sent to a young authors conference when I was eleven or twelve, got waylaid by the ballet bug for a while, then mucked around at university not knowing what I really wanted to do (or thought I could). So I studied my favourite subjects (English Lit, Music, Art History) and ended up doing a Masters in Library & Information Systems – and then worked in law libraries and corporate banks. But the yearning to ‘create’ always, always burned—and it was always going to be writing.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

Peace! I have four young children and I really can’t write with them around (not awake anyway!). This year has been so great because for the first time in the five years since I sold my first book I finally have my own office!!! We’ve put a small ‘shed’ in the garden (across a tiny creek we have). It was a kitset shed from Sweden and it’s the cutest thing. It looks like a gingerbread house or something. All wood and lovely. And it’s all mine! The neighbours thought we were putting in a playhouse for the kids but actually it’s MY playhouse! The kids are banned 😉 And happily our wireless internet connection doesn’t extend that far from the house so I cannot get distracted!!!

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

I love the days when I’m sitting there grinning at the screen like an absolute loon, with the words just flowing and being fun and … easy! I can get such a high from that. But some days, the real slog days where the story just isn’t going where you want it to, or it all seems flat… they can be so hard. But you just have to push on through! And this last year has taught me how much external things—things going on in other parts of your life—can really effect your writing and what you’re able to write. So that’s definitely been a challenge for me in recent times.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

WAKING UP IN THE WRONG BED – is a Harlequin Presents Extra, out in August. Here’s the blurb:

When film location scout Ellie Summers sneaks into a colleague’s hotel room with seduction in mind, she’s thrilled by her own daring!

But the smug morning-after glow morphs into red-faced mortification when she wakes in the arms of a total stranger! Ruben Theroux might be fine with the situation, but a flustered Ellie most definitely is not.

Ellie’s only defence against this very attractive guy is to insist they’re friends only–strictly no benefits! But Ruben isn’t a successful businessman for nothing–they’ll be good together, and he’s happy to play dirty to get what he wants….

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I really wanted to do a ‘wrong bed’ story—it’s such a fun and ‘naughty’ trope and I really wanted to see if I could get it to work in a believable way. I really wanted to figure out a way where she wouldn’t realise that it was the wrong guy—so she couldn’t know the guy’s body already (but then why is she jumping him in the middle of the night?), maybe they don’t talk much, and why does he let it happen? There were just so many delicious challenges to work through—and I had such fun doing it. And I loved flipping things around in the ‘morning after’ scene. And what happens after she’s walked away? Yeah, it was a lot of fun J

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

I’m working on a couple of things at the moment but I think my next release (hopefully it’ll be out very soon) is a novella featuring a heroine who’s desperate to ‘do the right thing’ for an important client, only she falls in the path of her client’s very sexy but skeptical older brother. Said brother will do whatever he thinks is required to protect his family and that includes bargaining with our beautiful heroine. This is the first in a trilogy of novellas that’ll eventually be out in an anthology titled FLIRTING TO WIN.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

I always find this question SO hard!!! My absolute fave ‘comfort read’ author is Georgette Heyer—I never tire of her Regencies no matter how many times I read them. She wrote some fabulous heroines—great, strong, witty women. And then those guys she created?! Yeah. I can never go past Heyer.

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

I guess my style is naturally influenced in a way—because we often write what we love to read. I love to read dialogue and that’s something I’m always working on. I love really getting to know the characters through the things they say and how they say them.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’m very lucky to have a couple of wonderfully supportive writing buddies—Nicola Marsh and Soraya Lane—both of whom also write for Harlequin. Both have released other projects recently. Nicola has a contemporary romance out with Entangled called “Not the Marrying Kind” while Soraya has a YA that she’s put out called “Change”. I can’t wait to read both these books as soon as I get my current wip into shape!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you so much for having me here today! And I’d love to give away a signed print copy of WAKING UP IN THE WRONG BED to one commenter—so please say hi to go into the draw!!!

Interview with Nana Malone

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Nana Malone to the blog today.
Nana, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Oh I’m just your average Ghanaian/American girl who lives in sunny San Diego with an American husband who thinks my family is crazy.  My Big Fat Greek Wedding has nothing on us.  In my infinite spare time, I chase around my two year old trying to tame her wild mane of hair, try and corral my spunky Scottie and occasionally let my hubby pamper me.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Nope. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an MTV VJ

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I write in chunks of fifteen minutes. 500 words a chunk.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Forsaken Protector is a continuation of the Protectors Series.

The enemy of her enemy is her friend.

Almost one year after escaping Gentech Facilities, Symone Jackson lives in the shadows with her nightmares. Thanks to horrible genetics experiments at the hand of Peter Reeser, her mere touch is lethal. It may be safer to stay in the darkness, but despite the monster she has become, she wants to be the hero…and only one man can help her.

Garrett Hunter thought he was one of the good guys, but on routine surveillance of a suspected terrorist, he discovers the awful truth…he’s not the only super human around. When Peter Reeser gave him the opportunity to beat a debilitating illness he jumped at the chance. But his decision to save the enemy—Symone Jackson—will endanger the only family he has.

The way to salvation is with Garrett’s help. Can Symone overcome her mistrust and stop living in the shadows? Or will her nightmares become reality?

How did you come with the idea for this story?

When I started thinking about doing a superhero romance, it was back when Heroes was on.  I kept thinking about all the places they could have gone with that story and didn’t.  Then when I started watching Alphas, I kept thinking about ways to evolve the superhero lexicon.  I wanted something that was believable for the modern world.  Like this could happen to you or your neighbors best friend.  But I also wanted it to be dark and explore the darker side of what happens when you have all this power and no one to relate to.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m currently working on the next books in both my series. Sultry in Stilettos, then right after that I’m moving on to Wounded Protector.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

JR Ward.  Her voice is phenomenal.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Write a good book.  Then when you think you’re done.  Edit it till it shines.  Then hand it to someone who will gut it.  Your mom won’t tell you the truth. Then re-write it again until it’s perfect.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

To make it to Tahiti.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’m waiting for JR Ward’s next in the Fallen Angels series

Interview & Giveaway with Sheri Fredricks

I’m holding a contest for the hosts of my book tour. The host with the most commenters will receive this gorgeous rhinestone studded, hand decorated book bag crafted by Tina Garcia of Blingitude.com. Come on everyone! Let’s get in the game!

And before you feel left out, there’s something for the commenters too. Details of the contest are below.

Sheri, Can you please share with us a little about yourself

Hi Kelly, thank you so much for having me here today.

Before I became a writer, I worked as a Communications Coordinator (aka Secretary) in an engineering contractor’s office. It was great: 65 men, 3 women. It was as close to heaven as a single girl could get. Today, I write full-time, working my schedule around my family and our many daily ranch chores. I’m a “cowboy girl” — a girl who loves her cowboy — who lives on the scenic central coast of California where the weather is nearly always perfect.

My debut book is published through Ruby Lioness Press.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I think I did; only I never knew it. I’ve always been a book reader, a habit inherited from my father. In high school, I learned people would pay me to complete their English writing assignments — naughty, I know. That carried into college when various members of the football team would ask for “help” with their Creative Writing assignments. Hey! It helped pay the bills. Wish I had kept some of those stories.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

A typical writing day would start with dropping the kids off at school, coming home for a two-mile run, then heading for the barn to feed the animals so they’ll stay quiet. After a shower, I zip through my emails, and bounce from Triberr to Facebook. By this time, I’ve consumed two very large mugs of decaffeinated coffee (two sweeteners, lots of cinnamon-vanilla cream.

One thing I like to wear while writing is anything with a hoodie attached. You’ve heard of a dream catcher? Well, I swear the hood acts like my muse catcher and keeps my thoughts from wandering too far.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

Most challenging: Staying off Facebook, and the constant need to check my email. <Grin!> On a more serious note, one of my weaknesses is not allowing outside distractions to come between me and my precious writing time. Willpower makes all the difference. And let’s not get started on the marketing aspect.

Most Rewarding: Having my editor publicly say, “Your writing makes me feel like I need a cigarette. I don’t smoke…” That was a first and a personal best.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Remedy Maker is book one of the Centuar series, which revolves around mythic inhabitants of the modern day Boronda Forest.

Here’s a little blurb that best describes the story:

Man by day, Centaur by night, Rhycious is a remedy maker who needs his own healing.

He’s the royal physician, famous for his cures. War and posttraumatic stress disorder has broken his spirit, preventing him from finding true happiness. Then a direct order from the queen to investigate an uprising forces him out of his secluded cabin at the edge of the forest.

Patience is an optimistic, good-natured Wood Nymph who works as a mediator to ensure harmony within the Nymph sector.

Environmental pollution in the aquifer stream that feeds the taproot tree of her heart is slowly killing her. Resigned to the fact she will not live long, she sets out to discover the mysterious disappearance of her sister. Experience has taught her to deny herself the love of a male, but the gruff Centaur is different. He doesn’t push his expectations on her, only his healing nature.

When Rhycious loses his grip on reality, he believes his inability to control his disorder will drive Patience away. Nevertheless, desire flares, and Patience draws him close. Kidnapping and betrayal turn their mythic joint venture into a deadly bout.

Will their love endure when survival hinges on trusting each other?

Here’s a short excerpt to tease you with:

A tickle teased his neck again, but not from annoyance this time. He repeated the examination of her other arm. Tension curled tighter in his gut, suspicion spread like spilled wine.

Tilting her head with care, he pushed her dark brown hair from her smooth décolletage, sucked in a short breath, and froze.

“What is it? Snake bite?” Samuel raised the brass lantern higher and leaned over for a better view.

Rhy tapped his thumb against her neck. Designs a few shades darker than her natural color marred the creamy complexion. The millennia old skin formation carved its way into his painful memories. It started behind her ear, an inch wide at the hairline, and extended to the other side.

The words choked out of him. There was no use trying to hide his revulsion. “Wood Nymph.”

How did you come with the idea for this story?

Wish I could say a moment of utter brilliance came upon me, and without further adieu, I had my rough draft. Not quite the way it happened.

I took an online writing class, and the assignment was to put our character in a pitch-dark room and write from his/her point of view. Participants in the class turned in the same old rhetoric: people who were blindfolded, struck with blindness, in a cave, etc. I wanted something different, and somehow a centaur in hiding came to me.

Then I asked myself the all important question – what if…?

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

Absolutely! I’m currently writing two books — Book Two of the Centaur series tentatively titled Trolly Yours. The outline is complete and I’m digging in with all ten fingers to finish the book. The story involves a character with a huge ego named Aleksander, introduced in Remedy Maker. He meets the only mythic female in the Boronda Forest who isn’t fazed by his charms and good looks. Ooh-whee…and the sparks fly!

I submitted a short story called Portals of OZ for one of my publisher’s anthologies (Love Down Under) and had so much fun, I decided to write additional shorts for two more anthology calls. The short stories are based on the mythological character types I created for the Boronda Forest.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

In my personal library, you’ll find popular authors such as Cherry Adair, Sandra Hill, and JR Ward to name a few. I also have some new to me authors that have fast become my favorites such as Brenda M. Dyer and Leanore Elliot.

There’s so many, it’s hard to choose just a few to name.

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

I hope so. I greatly admire the fearless characters of Tara Janzen, the humor of Sandra Hill, and original worlds of Jacquelyn Frank.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

My To Be Read pile is taller than most small children! I have Leanore Elliot, Robert Sadler, Christine Feehan, and Jacquelyn Frank, to name a few. I also believe in reading new, upcoming authors, as well as my old standbys.

Fortunately, with my writing schedule and jam-packed personal life, I don’t have to wait for the latest release. By the time I finish a book, the next one is usually out.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

If you’re looking for a book that will take you away to a mythic world that might exist…

If you love hot guys with insatiable appetites who have a dash of vulnerability…

If you’re looking for a sensual read with the power to make you gasp…

This would be the book for you.

Another great read from Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz. This is the first in a new historical series titled Ladies of Lantern Street. While it is not part of the Arcane Society series it does have the same feel to it. So if you liked one you will like the other.

Both Lucas and Evangeline have psychical abilities. Lucas is the new owner of the Crystal Gardens which includes botanicals that are fed by paranormal activity and actually glow during the night. When Evie is attacked she runs into the gardens and Lucas comes to her rescue. He decides it is best of her to move into the house for protection. Together they want to find out who ordered the attack on Evie and who murdered Lucas’s uncle.

As I said above this is another wonderful book from Quick/Krentz. I have enjoyed the Arcane Society books for a while now and this would fit right in with it. Evie and Lucas are interesting characters. Evie is not what she seems at first and is a delightful character to read about. Lucas is quiet yet strong and is written as a born leader.

You can never go wrong with a book by Quick/Krentz. Her books are about the paranormal but not about vampires or shape-shifters but about the power of crystals and the mind. If you enjoy historicals then pick this one up and then once you find you do not want to put it down then go back and start the Arcane Society books because this is really where Krentz/Quick excels.

Kelly’s review of Blade Song by JC Daniels

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Kit Colbana—half breed, assassin, thief, jack of all trades—has a new job: track down the missing ward of one of the local alpha shapeshifters. It should be a piece of cake.

So why is she so nervous? It probably has something to do with the insanity that happens when you deal with shifters—especially sexy ones who come bearing promises of easy jobs and easier money.

Or maybe it’s all the other missing kids that Kit discovers while working the case, or the way her gut keeps screaming she’s gotten in over her head. Or maybe it’s because if she fails—she’s dead.

If she can stay just one step ahead, she should be okay. Maybe she’ll even live long to collect her fee

Kelly’s Review:
I have to start by saying that I have not read many books in the Urban Fantasy genre.  Yes, yes I know there are lots of great ones out there.  I promise I will get to them.  So when JC asked me to read her new book I was excited and nervous all at the same time.  Then came the disclosure that this was not going to be a HEA romantic-ish ending.  So I was a little worried I may not like.  But I went into it with my eyes open and really did end up liking this book a lot.

Kit Colbana is a very tough girl. She has been through so much in her life that it is amazing how well rounded she is.  But she has a soft spot for kids and is willing to stand up for them no matter what the cost is to her.  And that is how she finds herself in the situation that she is currently in.
A situation that involves one crazy female Alpha, a lost boy, a pain in the butt vampire, and an amazingly good looking, totally out of this world protective, royal pain in the ass new bodyguard.  Who is also the Alpha’s head enforcer.

I will say that it did take me a little bit to get into this book.  I liked Kit right off and loved Damon.  But it took me a little while to figure out the world and decide if I like the book.  I love that Kit was brave, strong and determined.  But the same time she is young, naive and gets herself in over her head.   Damon is an Alpha all the way even if he doesn’t know it yet 😉 .  I really did in enjoy this book and look forward to the next installment in the series.  I look forward to seeing how Kit grows and what other surprises she has up her sleeves.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
BEEN DUMPED? GET MAD. BUT NOT THIS MAD.

Have you ever had your heart broken? How did you get over it?
If a pint of ice cream cheered you up and you were able to delete his number and start again then . . .
You’re a weirdo and this book is not for you.

But if you reacted with denial, begging, or a spot of casual witchcraft, then you’ve come to the right place. This is one woman’s journey from love to lunacy and back again. If you ever recall past heartbreaks with acute embarrassment and an urge to go into hiding, this will make you feel better. Sure, you may have sent his new girlfriend a bunch of dead roses, but did you spend a grand on psychic hot-lines and a voodoo curse?

Kimberly’s Review:
Remember being in love? Life is perfect with your guy and then he says “it’s over”? Then remember calling your best friend and crying? Having your best friend call to see if she could play middle-man and get you two back together? Getting into the car and driving down his street to see what he was doing? Maybe even making that one last call to say you loved him and please take you back? And when he didn’t you cried again on your best friends shoulder until finally you moved on?

Well now imagine not moving on… becoming a stalker and going mad!  Yep that is what happens to Ashleigh. This character has lost her ever loving mind but since it is not happening to you it can be enjoyed in this weirdly funny story. I, at one point. wondered if this was a “What not to do when dumped for dummies” book and thought maybe I should pick it up for my step-daughter now that she is dating but I worried she would find this hysterical and decide to try some of these things herself. This is most certainly a young woman’s story and not meant for a mature, past the point of obsessing over a guy, kind of woman.

I think you have to have a certain kind of personality to appreciate this book.  If you find humor is inappropriate circumstances then you will enjoy this book. Just remember this is not a handbook but a work of fiction. Do not try this at home!

Kelly’s review of Natural Evil by Thea Harrison

 Natural Evil
AUTHOR: Thea Harrison

ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Claudia Hunter is on a road trip through the Nevada desert when she sees the body of a dog on the side of the highway. Pulling over to investigate, she quickly determines that the enormous animal is clinging to life. While working to save him with the help of the local vet, Claudia realizes there’s something about the creature that seems more. Other. Wyr. Which makes this case of animal cruelty attempted murder.

Too injured to shape shift, Luis Alvaraz is reluctant to tell Claudia what he knows about his attack, afraid it will only make her a target. But the sheriff is corrupt, and his attackers know Luis is alive and vulnerable. To make matters worse, a sandstorm is sweeping into town, and if they’re going to survive the night, Luis will have to place all his trust in Claudia.

Warning: Take a gorgeous man temporarily stuck in the dog house, add a strong, take-no-prisoners woman, mix in encroaching enemies and a raging sandstorm and stir to combine. Enjoy with a freshly opened can of whoop-ass.

Kelly’s REVIEW:
Natural Evil is Thea Harrison’s 2nd e-novella in the Elder’s Race series.  While I really liked Luis & Claudia, this novella didn’t suck me to The Elder Races like Thea’s other books. Coming off reading Oracle’s Moon, which I totally loved, Natural Evil just didn’t do it for me.

I look forward to the next installment in the Elder Races series.
