Before the Witches

Dark Mission 0.5

In America, they didn’t care about witches. But all that was about to change.

Katya Zhuvova fled a country that feared her gifts, but her escape to Seattle left her at the mercy of a ruthless man. With no one left to turn to, Katya hatches a desperate escape plan. Undercover Detective Nigel Ferris is determined to bring down a prostitution ring, whatever the cost. In order to the get answers he needs, he attempts to win the trust of one of the prostitutes involved—but one look at the deceptively sultry Katya and the cool, objective cop disappears. Before either can put their plans into place, Mother Nature shrugs: a cataclysm rocks Seattle, and life is turned upside down.

Brought together by chance, Nigel and Katya are in the fight for their lives. Surrounded by death and fear, shattered by immeasurable loss, they have only a bond forged in fire to cling to as they struggle to survive in a world gone straight to hell.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blood of the Wicked
Dark Mission #1
When the world went straight to hell, humanity needed a scapegoat to judge, to blame . . . to burn.
As an independent witch living off the grid, Jessie Leigh has spent her life running, trying to blend in among the faceless drudges in the rebuilt city. She thought she was finally safe, but now she’s been found in a New Seattle strip club—by a hard-eyed man on a mission to destroy her kind.
A soldier of the Holy Order, Silas Smith believes in the cause: trawling the fringes of society for the murderous witches who threaten what’s left of the world. Forced into a twisting web of half-truths and lies, he has to stay close to the most sensuous and electrifying woman he has ever seen and manipulate her into leading him to the witch he has to kill: her brother. Silas doesn’t know that Jessie’s his enemy, only that he wants her, needs her, even as he lies to her… and must protect her until his final breath.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lure of the Wicked

Dark Mission #2

Naomi West was plucked from one prison and placed undercover in another: the gilded cage that is Timeless, New Seattle’s premier spa and resort, where owner Phinneas Clarke—the most seductive man Naomi has ever met—may be hiding a killer. She’s an agent of the Holy Order, trained to hunt the guilty and render justice. But while she’s tracking down a rogue agent on a killing spree, Phin is determined to uncover her most damning—and dangerous—secrets. Whatever the cost.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No Rest for the Witches
Dark Mission #2.5
New Seattle is changing. Witches and witch hunters have become allies, and the Order’s grip on the city is slipping. But they won’t go down without a fight…
After the disastrous end to their last mission, Jessie, Silas, and Naomi regroup at their sanctuary far beneath New Seattle. But their brief rest is shattered when Jessie “sees” two of their own attacked topside. Dodging bullets and black magic, they risk it all on a treacherous rescue mission. Already stretched to the limit, danger waits in unexpected corners. If the Holy Order finds them, the team is as good as dead. But they can’t hide forever..
All Things Wicked
Dark Mission #3
Juliet Carpenter thought of the coven as family, but when she falls for a man who betrays them all, she’s left alone and desperately searching for a reason why. Caleb Leigh has spent the past year in hiding, unable to escape his demons. When Juliet finds him again, her need for vengeance clashes with the hunger still burning between them.
It’s a fight born from the embers of a half-forgotten attraction and the wounds of a past too raw to ignore. With enemies circling and secrets threatening to consume them, Caleb has no choice but to fulfill a promise made long ago–protect her, save her. Even if it costs him his blood, his body . . . and what’s left of his mind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sacrifice the Wicked

Dark Mission #4

Parker Adams has always done what’s expected of her . . . until a double agent with nothing to lose ignites a passion she doesn’t dare give in to.

Mission Agent Simon Wells is everything Parker Adams has been trained to fight: manipulator, murderer, spy… witch. But for her, what makes Simon most dangerous is his mesmerizing sexual magnetism, powerful enough to tempt even the famed ice queen of the Mission. Though she knows better, each encounter with the deceptive agent leaves her craving more.

Simon isn’t a man to let go of what’s his, and his pursuit forces Parker, a woman he can’t get out from under his skin, to make a stand that could destroy her. If they can work together, they might survive the politics that have enslaved their devastated world—or fall victim to the pitfalls of desperation, bone-deep mistrust, and a hunger that threatens to consume them.

Interview & giveaway with Morgan Kelly

Books-n-Kisses is super excited to have Morgan Kelly on the blog today to chat a little about life and her new book Midnight in Your Arms.

Morgan, can you please share with us a little about yourself

My name is Morgan Kelly, and I’m a writer of various styles and genres of fiction, from Sci-Fi to Literary to Romance. I live in the Pacific Northwest of Canada in a tiny house on the Stave River with my husband and our menagerie of animals. Midnight In Your Arms (Avon Impulse, October 30th) is my first romance novel, and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

Have you always wanted to be an author?

From the time I could write words with a pencil, I’ve used that ability to concoct stories. I don’t think there was a time in my life since then that I wasn’t a writer, so the progression from writer to published author always seemed completely natural,. So, the simpler answer is, yes! I’ve always wanted to be an author, the way I’ve always wanted to keep breathing!

Are you a plotter or a panster? And you explain the difference?

I am definitely more of a panster than a plotter, though I am learning to be a little more of a plotter than I used to be, for the sake of time and energy conservation.

As I understand it, a plotter needs a lot of structure when it comes to their writing projects—they need diagrams, charts, and concise plans of action. They need to know every detail in advance. I think of a panster as someone who flies by the seat of her pants, when writing—a silly pun that I think describes the panster ethos perfectly. They might begin with a character, or a line of dialogue, or a single scene around which they construct their entire novel, without knowing the outcome or even much of the plot before diving into the writing process. In fact, they feel as though too much structure and foreknowledge actually hinders and may even damage their ability to write. Plotters are very logical, whereas pansters are a bit more superstitious and organic in their approach.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

That I use the Pomodoro Technique to optimize my productivity, and therefore only need to write for 2.5 to 3 hours a day to produce 6,000-10,000 words. Look it up, folks! It really works!

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

My latest book is called Midnight In Your Arms (Avon Impulse/HarperCollins), and it’s an eerie Gothic time-travel historical set in 1926 and 1866! The premise is that the heroine, Laura Dearborn, is a former WWI Western Front nurse with psychic abilities becomes a medium after the war to earn her living. All her life, she has dreamed about a ruined house clinging to a cliff over the sea, and had no idea that it was a real place. One day, she is visited by a solicitor who tells her that she has actually inherited the house she dreams about—Stonecross Hall. The twist is that the man who left the house to her in his will died 30 years before she was born! Laura goes to investigate the house and her connection to it, and falls in love with the ghost of Alaric Storm, her long-dead benefactor. How they find ways to be together is all tied up with the approach of All Hallows, the time of year when the veils between worlds disappear….

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I’ve always loved stories that are tied to a great and eerie house in the wilds of England—books like Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Rebecca, and The Little Stranger are like oxygen to me! So naturally I couldn’t help coming up with a ghostly love story in an English Manor House myself—and a story began to take shape in my mind that had to do with an abandoned house, a psychic, and a sexy ghost. When Avon put out a call for submissions for a Halloween romance that had to do with an abandoned house, I knew my opportunity to break into the romance genre had come. So I wrote my story over the space of two very hectic days, sent it in, and a week later I sold it to Avon! It was one of the most thrilling moments of my life.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

At the moment, I’m writing a story about a WWI governess who gets permanently stuck with her charges when a bomb kills their parents. The hero is their only surviving relative, an older half-brother who has inherited everything, including the children. The only problem is, he was injured in the war, shell-shocked, and secretly can’t remember who he is! Can our plucky governess and the two children she has sworn to protect help him find a way back to himself? I hope so, because if they can’t, I will have a pretty anti-climactic story on my hands! Ha.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I would love to sit down to tea with Susanna Clarke, because she wrote what may well be my favourite novel of all time—Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. It’s the perfect blend of the wit and charm of a19th Century novel and a fantastical, gritty, violent fairytale/cautionary tale. There is nothing else like it, and I think Ms. Clarke must be one of the world’s most fascinating writers. I’d like to talk to her forever about folklore, myth, literature and arcane matters. We could totally nerd out together over scones!

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

It is my personal opinion that there has never been a better time to be a writer. There are so many avenues by which a writer can get her work out there. My best piece of advice will always be this: If you want to write, don’t dream about it, DO IT! Sit down and WRITE! And FINISH what you write! Until you do that, no amount of dreaming will get you where you want to be. The simple truth is, writers MUST write, and they MUST FINISH what they write. Work towards that goal with complete bloody-mindedness. Remember that every writer you admire was once unpublished, staring at a blank page. It took an immense amount of self-discipline and hard work to get them where they are now. Writing is a dream job, but it isn’t easy! But if you really want to, you can do it!

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

I really want to swim in the Bosphorus! Not across it or anything—just IN it!

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Julie Anne Long’s new Pennyroyal Green book, A Notorious Countess Confesses, came out the same day my book did, and I can’t wait to read it!

What is one book everyone should read before they die?

Oh dear, that’s a tricky question! I could easily name one of my own favourite books, but I really feel like the answer is that I hope each and every person on earth manages to read the one book that explains the human condition to them so perfectly and with such grace and beauty that they die feeling perfectly understood and that it was all worthwhile.

What is your favorite time of year & why?

My favourite time of year is now! I love the leaves changing colour. I love getting out all the sweaters I knit over the summer and finally getting to wear them. I love those crisp, brilliantly sunny days where the whole world looks hyper-real against the sky, and the salmon are running in the river in front of my house. Everything is dying and getting ready to sleep so it can be reborn after Midwinter fades away. It’s a wonderful, magical, eerie time, and I love every minute of it. Halloween is my favourite holiday, made extra special this year with the release of my first romance novel.

Who is your Celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet them?

My celebrity crush has always been and will remain Christian Bale. I’ve loved him since I was five, and saw him in Empire of the Sun for the first time. He is one of the most gifted actors, with the ability, despite the fact that he is totally, singularly HOT, to disappear so completely into his character that I don’t see Christian Bale at all—I really do see only the character. I believe every moment of every scene he is in. And if I ever met him, I would tell him just that. And then melt into a puddle on the floor.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I am offering a giveaway! Leave a comment here (on the BnK post) and “Like” my Facebook Fan Page in order to be entered to win a copy of Midnight In Your Arms on Kindle or whatever e-format you like best! You can find me on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/MorganKellyAuthor

For fans of Downton Abbey and readers of Jude Deveraux and Teresa Medeiros comes a brand-new tale of a love that dares to defy time itself…

When psychic Laura Dearborn inherits Stonecross Hall in 1926, she has no idea she’s inheriting a love story too-one that she’s lived again and again. But as Alaric Storm III, the handsome owner of the mansion from sixty years earlier, starts to haunt her waking dreams, Laura discovers her heart’s true home has always been within Stonecross’s walls.

Tormented by memories of war, Alaric Storm III is used to spirits-just not ones from the future. Set on fire by Laura’s ghostly affections, Alaric is forced to choose: follow his heart and grasp Laura’s hand through time, or surrender to the call of duty and live without love.

As All Hallows’ Eve draws near, Alaric and Laura must find a way to hold on to each other forever-or risk repeating their tragic romance until the end of time.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
He’d invited her to walk in the moonlight–but would it lead to more than just one night?

His tender smile invited her to confess her deepest secrets, but Luke Morgan never expected Alex Sheridan to reveal the memories that tormented her dreams. When his comforting caresses escalated into sudden, sweet ecstasy, Alex was stunned by the speed of her surrender! The rugged architect had slipped through her defenses and touched her soul, but when suspicion shadowed his every move, could she help him clear his name?

In this explosive and intriguing novel of high stakes and risky business, Eve Gaddy challenges her lovers to walk a tightrope between trust and betrayal. Drawn to a charismatic man who’d soothed her grief one restless night, she’d found herself sharing her pain–and his bed–but could she believe their sudden passion might be the real thing?

REVIEW:
For some reason I just could not get into this story. It has an interesting story so I am not sure what it was but it was definitely something that just didn’t click for me. I also had a hard time with some of the inaccuracies like the fact that Luke just hands over the names of his Navy SEALS (ummm no!), etc. I wish I could explain what didn’t work for me with this story but I just can’t. I would say if the synopsis interest you then read it because it could just be me and you might enjoy it more than I did.

Kelly’s review of Provoked by Rebecca Zanetti

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A TIME FOR WAR…
A casualty of the war between the demons and the vampires, Jase Kayrs has been missing for six long years. His older brothers want answers—but they’re going to have to get them from an unlikely source. For when Kane Kayrs tracks down Amber Freebird, what he finds is a blonde, vegan pacifist who has no intention of using her skills in his war…

A TIME FOR LOVE…

Amber enjoys her life of chaotic freedom and has no intention of falling in line just because a sexy-as-sin vampire insists on order. Unfortunately, he discovers she may be the only hope they have of finding his brother, and there’s no way he’s going to let her go—even if it means mating her to gain her cooperation. The two are as different as can be, yet when the dominant Kane and the untamed Amber finally unite to rescue Jase, they just may find that opposites really do attract…

“Hot and fast from beginning to end.”

REVIEW:
AAAhhhhh Kane Kayrs.  The smart brother, the brother with all the answers.  The know it all brother.   Well Kane just met his match in the form of a very feisty female.   Amber knows nothing of the world that Kane lives in.  And when she does find out all she wants to do is get away from this crazy, uber hot man who has a few screws loose.  But Kane is not going to let Amber escape that easily.  He needs her.  She is the key to saving his brother and Kane will do anything to save Jase.

But with Amber, Kane is finally going to realize that he doesn’t know everything.  Not everything can be learned in a book or in a manual or on the internet.  Sometimes your heart knows more then your heart ever will.

I really enjoyed Kane & Amber’s story.  There is so much going on. Not only do we see Kane & Amber’s story. But we learn a little about what has happened to Jase, and I am not sure if or how he will ever get better.   We also get a glimpse into some kind of love triangle between Janie, Zane and Kalin.  And we can only guess as to what Janie is cooking up.  I am very much looking forward to what Rebecca has in store for us next in the Dark Protector’s series

Old earth has been deemed unsuitable for life, New Earth is home. With the Uni-War over, races have joined together in order to sustain their way of life. All life was deemed worth saving, but only one race failed to submit. Humans.
Now extinct, humans are a thing of the past, or at least their way of life. The people of New Earth won’t acknowledge their hand in the human’s eradication, but they have benefited from it. Dr. Vaggo Blackmore has found the answer, he’s restored his races way of life- sustenance through farming. The one thing that will give them back their long lives….. Blood: human blood.
Biologically engineered in a lab, Genesis Blackmore has always been different. Her father has told her it’s due to her enhancements, the Federated Council sees her as a genetic mutation; and her fellow peers see her as the shiny new toy. Gen has had better days.
Everyone on New Earth has milky white skin, platinum blonde hair, and electric blue eyes. It’s the norm. Genesis’ glossy, black hair, ice blue eyes ringed by gold, would have almost made her socially acceptable- if it wasn’t for her honey, almond skin and blue, gold veins. In a sea of milky white she alone is the dark anomaly.
All Pars get their life’s nourishment through blood plasma. All Pars find their match through the tasting. Gen can do neither, forbidden by her father to do so. She can neither taste, nor be tasted. Something that’s never bothered her until now.

9-1-1—Help, Someone Killed My Muse!

When I first noticed my muse had gone missing, I figured she’d been working hard, she needed a vacation, give her a break. When she hadn’t returned a week later, I wondered if she was delayed somewhere due to bad weather or a flight cancellation, which often happens to me. Two weeks later, I sat in front of my computer staring at a blank page, in total panic mode. I needed to start a new book. Where was she? Granted, she’d been complaining about needing a better work environment—more vacation days, weekends off, shorter writing days, etc., but she’d have given me a chance to provide her with some benefits before quitting. She wouldn’t desert me after 10 years and 11 books. No way.

So what had happened to her? Had she been abducted? Who would have done such a thing? A writer friend playing a sick joke? My cats, because I’d been working too hard and ignoring them? Frantic, I did everything I could to find her. I started reading like a maniac. Reading inspires me to write and helps fill my well. But no matter how much I read, no muse. So, I conducted research for a new book idea I was throwing around. There wasn’t anything I couldn’t Google out. Except my muse.

Unable to start a new book without her, I rewrote books, I entered contests, I queried agents, and I found a teen group to critique my young adult book. Yet, I still wasn’t motivated to start writing a new book. I finally had to face the fact that someone may have killed my muse. She might never return. Disheartened, I needed a diversion from my writing, so I started tracing my Irish ancestry.

Two years went by, then one day my muse returned, speaking Irish slang, bubbling with enthusiasm over a new idea for a women’s fiction book set in Ireland. She’d been off in Ireland visiting her rellies and friends. Her ideas were flowing faster than Guinness in an Irish pub. I filled an entire journal with ideas and wrote the first three chapters of a new book. I was still upset she’d ditched me without a word, yet I couldn’t blame her entirely, and I was so happy she was back, I never mentioned it again.

Moral of the story:  you can’t force your muse. She’s a very fragile and moody thing. I had written 11 books in 10 years and I was burnt-out. I promise to take better care of her and myself. Now that we’ve sold, she promises to stick around and not leave me high and dry again.

Book Blurb

When a series of failed relationships and business ventures have Monica Jackson doubting her self-worth, she turns to spell casting to attract positive energy and the opportunities needed to achieve her goals.  But can Monica’s belief in spells restore her belief in herself?

Monica creates a spell to find her soul mate, and one to ensure the success of her new romantic event planning company, Enhance Your Romance.  Monica is confident she has found her niche until divorce lawyer Reed Walker opens a practice next door to her office.  The anti-marriage slogan plastered on his office window, and his down-on-love clients, quickly prove detrimental to Monica’s business.  When his arrival appears to trigger a string of bad luck, Monica fears one of her spells sent negative energy into the universe and it has returned to her threefold.  Although Reed is beyond sexy, and she admires his self-confidence, she’ll do whatever it takes to get the universe back on her side, and Reed out of her life. No way is she losing another business.

Reed finds himself attracted to Monica’s beauty and her optimism. His job and his parents’ divorce have made him a pessimist, especially when it comes to love. However, he soon finds that Monica’s pro-love attitude is rubbing off on him, causing him to lose his edge.  If Reed doesn’t distance himself from Monica, he’ll likely destroy his reputation as a pit bull divorce lawyer.

Can Monica and Reed look past what they might be losing to realize the love they have found?

Author Bio

Eliza Daly’s first attempt at creative writing was in fourth grade. She and her friends were huge Charlie’s Angels fans and she would sit in her bedroom at night writing scripts for them to act out at recess the following day. She was Kelly Garrett. Fast forward to the present, she’s still writing stories about beautiful women who always get their men. The journey from fourth grade script writer to published author wasn’t an easy one, but it was always an adventure and the final destination was well worth it.

When Eliza isn’t traveling for her job as an event planner, or tracing her ancestry roots through Ireland, she’s at home in Milwaukee working on her next novel, bouncing ideas off her husband Mark, and her cats Quigley and Frankie.

You can find Eliza on the web at WebsiteFacebookTwitter and Goodreads.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Middy Cherrywood does. She’s got more warlock than she can hex with Dred Shadowins. He isn’t just a billionaire playboy and Weekly Warlock centerfold. He’s a spy for the High Chancellor, and he convinces Middy to pose as his fiancée for his latest mission. Too bad no one told his mother before she slipped Middy a potion that will make their sham engagement all too real in just ten days.

Dred Shadowins already has his hands full with cursed objects, possessed nuns, and dreams where Merlin makes him pay for taking his name in vain by relating his sexcapades with Nimue. But by the end of the mission, he’s convinced his most difficult challenge is the hero’s cape Middy’s draped over his shoulders. Because he wants nothing more than to give her the one thing he may not be capable of providing: Happily Ever After.

REVIEW:
I have to say that I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. I was not sure based on the beginning of the book because it seemed a little over the top on magic and thought it might be heading towards a cheesy witch story but a little way into the book I really began to enjoy it.

Middy and Dred have a great relationship and are written really well and with a good amount of humor. I liked the fact that Dred admits he has always had a crush on Middy because it brings the story full circle. There were some twist and turns that were fun to read.

I think anyone would enjoy this story whether you are a fan of paranormal or just romance but as a fan of books with witches you will find yourself unable to put it down.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.

In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.
REVIEW:
I need to start with how much I love Darynda as an author.  Her books are always funny.  I really love Charley’s series.  But 4th Grave is my least favorite book in the series so far.  I still enjoyed this book very much, it just was not my favorite.  Although I did love all the Reyes parts 🙂
Charley is just not the same after what happened to her in book 3 (and yes you really should read this series in order).  I am looking forward to Charley healing and getting back on her game.

Reyes is still Reyes.  We do get a little more insight into why Reyes is on earth and what he may or may not wants with Charley.  And all the reasons might not be for the best.   But I want to believe that deep down Reyes is good despite who is daddy might be.

Reyes and Charley are great together and it seems that they are finally getting to a good place (it’s about time you stubborn characters).

I am looking forward to what Darynda has next for us…

Kimberly’s review of Forbidden by Jacquelyn Frank

TITLE: Forbidden
AUTHOR: Jacquelyn Frank
PUBLICATION DATE:  10/30/12
ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
From New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Frank comes this first book in The World of the Nightwalkers—an exciting and sensual new spin-off series in which the Bodywalkers, an ancient race of the night, battles the evil forces who prey on them.

The unexpected happens in an instant. On her way to work, secretary Docia Waverley hurtles into a crashing crossroads, and she quickly begins to suspect that things will never be the same. Then, when a tall, blond, muscular stranger intervenes on her behalf, telling her it is his duty to protect her at all cost, what is just a feeling turns to proof positive. That is, as long as Docia’s savior doesn’t turn out to be a crazed kidnapper.

When Ram finds Docia, he has no doubt that she is his queen. But as this golden warrior sweeps in to protect her, he feels something more than body heat every time they touch. He is overwhelmed by a searing connection that goes deep into the twin souls inside him. A desire rises in him that is forbidden—this woman is his queen, the mate of his king, his leader, his best friend. And yet Docia is so vulnerable and attractive that she awakens a hunger in Ram that is undeniable, a carnal craving he cannot yield to . . . not without risking the very survival of the Bodywalkers.

REVIEW:
This is a new series about Nightwalkers branching off from the older one about Bodywalkers and I have to say I was confused. I have not read the other series and I just had no idea who these characters were and why they were doing what they were doing.

That being said it was an interesting story if not a bit too far fetched for me. I guess I should have realized that this was about a reincarnation from long ago using another body to come back to the world and should have stayed away but I didn’t so I have to say I am just not interested in that type of storyline. As I said it is an interesting story and I can see why so many people would be fans of it but it is just not the genre that I am interested in.

I gave it 3 stars because while I would say I was not a fan of it at the same time I feel I am influenced by the fact that it is not my cup of tea. If you are a fan of Frank’s and have read the other in the previous series I am sure you will enjoy this one just as much.
