Jennifer’s review of Sealed With A Curse by Cecy Robson

TITLE: Sealed With A Curse
AUTHOR: Cecy Robson
PUBLICATION DATE: 12/31/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls-with one exception: they’re products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, weird…

The Wird sisters are content to avoid the local vampires, werebeasts, and witches of the Lake Tahoe region–until one of them blows up a vampire in self-defense. Everyone knows that vampires aren’t aggressive, and killing one is punishable by death. But soon more bloodlust-fueled attacks occur, and the community wonders: are the vampires of Tahoe cursed with a plague?

Celia reluctantly agrees to help Misha, the handsome leader of an infected vampire family. But, Aric, the head of the werewolf pack determined to destroy Misha’s family to keep the regions safe, warns Celia to stay out of the fight. Caught between two hot alphas, Celia must find a way to please everyone, save everyone, and oh yeah, not lose her heart to the wrong guy–or die a miserable death. Because now that the evil behind the plague knows who Celia is, it’s coming for her and her sisters. This Wird girl has never had it so tough.

REVIEW:
Cecy Robson has created a wonderful paranormal world with her debut of Sealed With a Curse. This book is filled with non-stop action and romance with four amazing women that are involved in a battle of epic proportions that may cost them their lives. I loved this book because the Wird sisters are just phenomenal. They have supernatural powers that have never been seen before and they just want to live their life peacefully in Lake Tahoe taking care of others as nurses. I was impressed by the fact that these women are nurses, which holds a special place in my heart and there were scenes in this book that I could definitely relate to.

Celia, is the main character in this book and is the oldest of the four sisters. She has done everything to protect her family from witches, vampires and werebeasts while trying to deal with her own unusual power. She is a tough, smart and funny woman that you just can’t help caring for and wanting her to experience the normal things in life. Especially when there are hot, sexy, werewolves living in Lake Tahoe who seem to be enchanted with the Wird sisters. I thought that Aric was absolutely gorgeous and I was hoping that he would be a perfect match for Celia because he was so determined to protect her from all the vampire drama. I was definitely rooting for them by the end of this book to become a little more than just friends.

Sealed With a Curse is a well-written novel that shouldn’t be missed especially if you enjoy paranormal romance. I am desperately wanting the next book in the series, A Cursed Embrace, that is set to come out next year but I will try to be patient until I can get my fix of the Wird Sisters and the hot werewolf pack of Lake Tahoe.

Kimberly’s review of Baby Under The Christmas Tree by Teresa Carpenter

TITLE: Baby Under The Christmas Tree
AUTHOR: Teresa Carpenter
PUBLICATION DATE: 11/27/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
San Diego hockey team’s PR director Elle Austin goes beyond the call of duty to keep their rebel captain in check—even playing nanny to his son! Max Beasley knows nothing about looking after a baby, so he enlists Elle’s help after little Troy is left on his doorstep by his irresponsible ex.

Maybe it’s the spirit of Christmas, or seeing Max’s softer side, but Elle wishes he saw her as more than just an employee, and that they could give Troy the best gift of all—a family!

REVIEW:
4.5 Stars This is a very sweet story. I am not sure it is a holiday story though. The Christmas part only takes place in the last 20 or so pages and barely much at that so this story can be read anytime of year.

The connection between Max and Elle is perfect. Max is a great guy who has a past to overcome and Elle is looking for her Mr. Right but is her Mr. Right who she expects it to be?

This is a perfect lay around the house read. Grab a cup of coffee, curl up on the couch in front of the fire and enjoy.

“Pervertibles in O Come All Ye Kinky” by Sarah Frantz

The call for the O Come All Ye Kinky anthology went something like this: “The Winter Holidays are times of love, joy, family togetherness, peace and goodwill for all. They are also times of stress, strife, family feuds, pressure, and heartache. But most of all, they’re chock full of pervertibles: ornament hooks, candles, jingle bells, tape, candy canes, kinky gift giving, and more.” So my amazing authors were primed to use pervertibles in their stories.

Pervertibles are your normal, everyday items that can be perverted to kinky uses. They’re things like spatulas in the kitchen or paint stirrers in the workshop—they look innocent, until someone not-so-innocently slaps them against their thigh, eyebrow raised, smiling wickedly at their submissive. OCAYK is chock-full of pervertibles, so I thought I’d detail some of them as a way to preview some of the fun sexy-times in the volume.

Joey Hill, Alexa Snow, and Kim Dare use candles for wax play in their stories. The drops of molten wax against unprotected skin can be quite shocking and very sensual. The dominant in Joey Hill’s story takes the wax play a bit further, sticking feathers in the drying wax and turning his submissive into an angel, just in time for Christmas.

In fact, Christmas is very much on the minds of the characters in these stories, of course. The dominant in Jane Davitt’s story wraps the…um, interesting parts of his submissive in wrapping paper and uses duct tape to secure the paper…and then rips it off.  He also decorates his submissive with garland (tinsel in British English parts of the world). Dominants in the stories by Elyan Smith and Joey Hill use Christmas lights to decorate their submissives, turning them into living Christmas trees and playing with the heat of the bulbs. Both heroes of L.A. Witt’s “Candy Caning” use a candy cane: the dominant as, well, a cane, and the submissive for the heating/cooling effects of peppermint on wet skin.

Turning to New Year’s celebrations, Rachel in Katie Porter’s story uses glitter and a paddle to turn her submissive into a private fireworks display, which Kingsley of Kim Dare’s story uses champagne for breath play, ice to counteract the molten wax, and roses—and their thorns—all to great effect on his submissive.

There are non-holiday related pervertibles in these stories: carriage reins for bondage in Ava March’s Regency-set historical, clothespins and a missor in Katie Porter’s story, Lincoln Logs and stick horses in Joey Hill’s amazing story, a jingle ball cat toy in Jane Davitt’s tale. These authors—and their characters—are nothing if not inventive.

What are your favorite holiday-related pervertibles?

Happy Holidays, everyone! May they be happy and as kinky as you want them to be!

Christmas with the Cobras

First I’d like to say a big thank you to Kelly for welcoming myself and the Cobras for a nice, holiday visit. Since there haven’t been Christmas games in the NHL since 1971, and a big part of the Cobra’s books revolves around the game itself, we haven’t seen how the team handles the holidays. So for this visit, I thought it would be nice to take a look at one of the past Christmases with Oriana and her men.

You do recall how passionate she is about the game, right? <g>

* * * *

Oriana inhaled sharply, rubbing her hands against her jean clad thighs before pulling on her hockey gloves. Bringing the men to the Delgado Forum for Christmas had seemed like a good idea when she’d planned it all, but . . . what if they thought the idea was silly?

Damn it, things are so much easier when they’re in charge.

Shaking her head, she picked up her stick and headed to the rink, where the men waited, Sloan and Max wearing white practice jerseys, Dominik wearing a black one that matched hers. Max and Dominik were racing across the ice, suicide style, skates slicing in long, fast strides as they started from the goal line, sprinted to the blue line, then swiveled, returning to the beginning before darting to the second blue line. The energy—the sheer power they displayed—blanked her mind for several long moments. She almost forgot why she’d brought them here.

Sloan moved away from where he’d idly practice his stick handling, pulling her back against his chest and whispering in her ear. “If they wear themselves out, do I get you all to myself?”

Her pulse race. “What would you do to me?”

He chuckled in the way only he could, humor mixed with something darker. “I’m sure I can think of something. And I promise it won’t hurt. Much.

She wet her lips, peering up at him over her shoulder. “What if I ask you to?”

The playful glint in his eyes told her he had no intention of playing nice. “I may have to show you how gentle I can be.”

Damn sadist. She rolled her eyes, gliding away from him and clearing her throat. “We have the place for two hours, so we should probably get started.” Her cheeks heated as Dominik and Max stopped racing and turned to her expectantly. “I thought maybe we could . . . umm . . . .”

“Go on, darlin’,” Max said, the warmth in his tone easing her past her uncertainty. She loved all the men, but had married Max because they shared something different. Something that made her feel like she could face anything. While Dominik and Sloan would always stand by her side, Max went a step further, letting her know he believed she was strong enough to stand alone. “You’ve had this planned for a bit, haven’t you? I knew somethin’ was up, but tried to be patient for the surprise. You ain’t gonna disappoint me now, are you, sugar?”

Inhaling deep, she shook her head. “No, but it’s not a big deal. Just a game.”

Dominik’s teeth flashed white against his dark skin as he gave her a broad smile. “A game? I like the sound of that.” He gave her a hooded look. “Are there perks to being on your team?”

“Yes and no.” She giggled as his brow lifted slightly. “You’re going to help me keep my clothes on. But if our team wins, we decide how much the losers get to play.”

“Sounds good.” Sloan smirked as he snatched a puck from the bucket by the boards. “So how we doing this.”

Oriana smirked. “Well, you put your stick on the ice and then you try to get the puck.” She pointed at the puck in his hand. “In the net.”

“Figured that much, smart ass.” Sloan gaze turned hungry as it raked over her. “What do I get when I do?”

“A piece of clothing. From either myself or Dominik.” She bit her bottom lip, knowing very well Dominik would be fully clothed by the end of the game. There really wasn’t any way around that. She continued before Sloan could point out the obvious. “Down to underwear. Then winner’s choice of . . . whatever.”

All three men nodded. They met at center ice, Dominik and Sloan facing off while Oriana and Max waited a few paces behind them for a pass. At Oriana’s ‘Go!’ Sloan snapped up the puck. Without a word, he dodged Dominik, slipping the puck to Max, knowing exactly where he was without looking.

But he crossed the blue line ahead of Max, putting himself offside.

“Penalty!” Oriana laughed as Sloan skidded to a stop. “You forfeit an item of clothing!”

Sloan blinked. “What?

Max bent over laughing. “Her game, her rules, pal. I suppose it’s only fair that she makes ‘em up as she goes along.”

Grumbling under his breath, Sloan tossed Max his stick, then tore off his jersey. Oriana’s mouth went dry as she took in his thickly muscled arms, recalling the strength in them as he held her, as he used his hands, or whatever impact toy he had close, to give her the intense pain-pleasure she craved. Testing him like this would have consequences, whether it was here, or tonight.

Max’s Christmas gift to Sloan had been a leather riding crop. She had a feeling it would get broken in very soon.

The game continued, Sloan losing his tank top for playfully crosschecking Dominik. Then Max lost his jersey for holding Oriana while Sloan took a shot. Dominik dove to block the puck at the last second, feigning disappointment when it got by him.

Their eyes on her as she pulled off her jersey as more than enough to keep her from getting cold. She ducked her head as Max whistled under his breath. All she wore under her jersey was a red velvet, white fur lined bra. She knew after they saw it, the game wouldn’t last long.

But, still, she played hard, and both Sloan and Max were shirtless when Sloan dove to make the last goal. He shouted out a laugh as he surged to his feet, swiping moisture from his bare chest, giving himself a hard shake before skating up to her.

His lips on her throat made her shiver as he undid the top button of her jeans. He tugged them down, the skin on his cheek creasing slightly as he took in the matching panties. He glanced over at Max, then jerked his chin towards the closest goal.

Max lifted her up to sit her on the netting, holding her there while Sloan removed her skates and jeans. Goosebumps rose all over her flesh as she felt both men’s hands, firm on her body as they repositioned her, Max held her wrists in one hand, kissing her even as he bared her breasts. Sloan bit her inner thigh, rasping out a laugh as she squirmed.

“I like the height.” His lips traveled over the sensitive flesh between her hip and her thigh. “Very creative, love.”

Not her idea, but she was in no position to argue. She moaned as he used his teeth to pull her panties down.

“Would you care to join us, Dominik?” Sloan spoke with his lips close enough to her mound to tease her. Her arousal spilled hot enough to melt all the ice around them, pure liquid fire. A flick of his tongue and she almost came undone. He gave her a wicked smile. “I think I saw our little pet sneaking my toy bag out of the house. Please find it. We really need to cover those pretty nipples before they get cold.”

Dominik grinned. “I couldn’t agree more.”

While Dominik went for the bag, Sloan removed her panties, then spread her thighs. She pressed her eyes shut, expecting to feel his mouth on her. Instead, she jumped as he laid a stinging slap right on her pussy. Her back bowed and she gasped as the sweet pain burst into her core.

Sloan licked along her folds and she could hear the smile in his words. “Red is a lovely color on you, bunny.”

Kelly’s review of Rescue My Heart by Jill Shalvis

TITLE: Rescue My Heart
AUTHOR: Jill Shalvis
PUBLICATION DATE: 11/06/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
After a tragic stint in the National Guards, Adam Connelly returns to Idaho and to Belle Haven, the animal shelter he owns with his brothers. All Adam wants is to be alone. Then he opens the door to the past—the woman whose heart he once broke. Still gorgeous, still tough-as-nails, but this time, unusually vulnerable.

Holly Reid learned the hard way to never depend on a man for anything. Now, of all men, it’s the last one she wants to see, and the only one she needs. Her father has gone missing in the Bitterroot Mountains and she could use someone with tracking skills to help find him.

For Holly and Adam, each with their ghosts, a trek this desperate, this unpredictable, and this intimate, will have its share of risks—including opening their hearts one more time.

REVIEW:
4.5 Stars I am convinced that Jill Shalvis can do no wrong when it comes to writing a romantic story. Jill really knows how to suck us into a story and then never let us go until we are completely satisfied. Rescue My Heart does just that. Sucks you in and hangs on tight. Besides who doesn’t love a great second chance at love story?

Adam & Holly were in love one wonderful summer in their younger years, but fate and stubbornness drove them apart. So after so much time apart Holly fears that if she asks Adam for help he will say no. But what she doesn’t know is how much Adam still loves and misses her.

Adam as tough as he is thought that he was prepared for anything. That was until the love of his life walks back in and asks for help to find her missing father. Adam is powerless to tell her no, but does tell her he will find her father on his own. It is no surprise that Adam finds he has a stow-away in the back of his vehicle.

These two go on a journey not only looking for Holly’s dad, but to learn more about each other. Why things went so wrong in the past and to learn that sometimes being stubborn might just get you everything you want
As I said before, I think Jill can do no wrong with her books. I have yet to pick up one of her books and not fall completely in love with the characters. Rescue My Heart is such a good book. If you are a fan of Jill’s you really should pick up a copy of Rescue My Heart and fall in love with Adam & Holly. While this is part of the Animal Magnetism series it is easily read as a stand alone book

Ursula’s review of Haunted Sanctuary by Moira Rogers

TITLE: Haunted Sanctuary
AUTHOR: Moira Rogers
PUBLICATION DATE: 01-22-13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The shadows of her past could destroy their future.

Green Pines, Book 1

Eden Green can’t remember a time she didn’t believe in monsters—her cousin was born one. Her family’s dark past casts a long shadow, making it hard to make friends and harder to commit to a lover. She lives a quiet life in small-town Clover, Tennessee, but she’s always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Tired of the city packs’ corruption, yet too alpha to be a subordinate in a sanctuary town, Jay Ancheta satisfies his need to protect by serving as Clover’s Chief of Police. As much as he’s drawn to Eden, he can’t offer forever to a woman who doesn’t know what he is—or trust himself to let her go after one taste.

When Eden’s cousin and his battered pack stagger into town, their tormentors hard on their heels, Eden is bitten in the chaos. Now Jay not only has a traumatized pack to deal with, but a newly turned wolf with enough hungry alpha power to consume them both.

With their combined strength, they can create a new sanctuary—if their passion can survive the ghosts of the Green family’s legacy.

REVIEW:

OK, I have a confession. This was my first Moira Rogers book. I swear, I haven’t been hiding under a rock! I have heard of her, err them. I’ve just never had the occasion to read a book by Ms. Rogers. Wow, am I sorry I haven’t. This book was an intense introduction into Ms. Roger’s vision of werewolf shifters and witches. It was explosive from the very start and never stopped. I have found that I enjoy my paranormal books with a little (or a lot) of realistic violence. It started with a bang and I just devoured it. Not only was it a rollercoaster ride of suspense, but there was emotion and angst. I am seriously worried about Eden’s cousin. I just wanted to hold him and make everything ok. Zach is seriously damaged and I was so worried for him.

That aside, there was great action and this was a super beginning to a terrific new series. The relationship between Eden and Jay is combustible. The intense chemistry between them leapt off the page. Add to that the conflict of starting a Sanctuary and you have a fantastic book that I couldn’t put down. With werewolves and witches, the possibilities for the Green Pines series are endless. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series. And I am definitely going back and getting her other books!

Interview & Giveaway with Heather Killough-Walden

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to have Heather Killough-Walden on the blog today to chat a little about her upcoming release “Death’s Angel”

Heather, can you please share with us a little about yourself?

My favorite holiday is Halloween; my favorite colors are deep royal purple and fog gray; In the last few years I’ve been to nine different countries and six different US states in order to do research for my books; and I love putting pennies on train tracks.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Yes. 🙂 Of course, there were times that I wanted to be an author AND an actress AND a dancer AND an archaeologist. But always a writer.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.

About 60% of the a 20-hour work day is spent in correspondence with readers or agents or publishers, coming up with marketing ideas and implementing them, dealing with giveaways or contests, editing, making covers, or posting books. About 30% of the day is spent homeschooling my child. The rest is spent writing or sleeping or laying comatose on the couch in front of an episode of Deep Space Nine.

Can you tell us what you’re working on right now?

I’m working on The Warlock King today, the third book in The Kings series. I’m loving Jason Alberich more with each wicked word.

Is there anything you have to have while writing?

I have to be left alone. My daughter bugs me constantly.  My phone. The front door. And each new interruption is an emotion lost, a pivotal scene gone awry. It’s like climbing a rollercoaster slant; climb, climb, climb – and then getting to the top and preparing for the scream-ride down, and then having someone come out of the booth up top and say, “I’m sorry but the roller coaster is broken and you’ll have to climb out here.” I have to get on a whole new roller coaster and start a whole new climb.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

The most challenging part is making deadlines while trying to juggle the marketing/communications/editing/promotion workload and still maintain a desire to write.

The most rewarding is finishing a book and having a reader tell me it was amazing and that they loved it and can’t wait for the next one.  That never gets old.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

I’ve released three books in three months: Secretly Sam in October, A Sinister Game in November, and Death’s Angel will be coming out December 31st.  Death’s Angel is the third book in my Lost Angels series – this one focuses on Azrael, the former angel of death and the king of the vampires. This is the one everyone’s been waiting for. Here is the synopsis:

As the Angel of Death, Azrael could never be like his brothers. While the others fell to Earth in human form, Azrael descended as a vampire. Today, as the lead singer of a popular rock band, he keeps his true nature hidden–a powerful darkness constantly at odds with his angelic self. Beneath his mask, Azrael holds onto the hope that he will one day find the archess who will complete him.

At his brother Gabriel’s wedding, Azrael set his golden eyes on Sophie Bryce, the maid of honor. He is certain she is his destined mate, and will do anything to make her his. But Sophie is unaware of her archess identity, and is haunted by unspeakable demons of her own.

When supernatural forces emerge from the shadows, threatening Sophie, Azrael is the only one who can protect her. But to do it, he must reveal his true, savage self.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

Oh, Az’s story has been waiting to be told since the beginning. As has Samael’s.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Me. J Also, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, Lewis Carroll, Terry Pratchett….

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

Bradbury was a very descriptive author. He used a lot of color, a lot of sounds and smells and sensations in his work. I like that – a lot.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

Okay. Random page. Random paragraph. Here are a few lines:

The need inside him shoved all else aside and left no room for subtle kindnesses. He was all monster now, his sole saving grace the absolute love he felt for the woman in his dangerous embrace. Had it not been for this tempering compassion, he would have turned her. No hesitation. No remorse.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Can this be a movie instead? Because I absolutely cannot WAIT to see Oz, the Great and Powerful. The trailers have left me all aflutter. LOL

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Just that I am very grateful for the time you’ve given me, and for the chance to appear on your blog. Thank you and have a wonderful holiday season!

Coming December 31, 2012
(book three in the Lost Angels series)

Since the beginning of time, the archangels have longed to know true love. When four female angels were created for the four archangels, Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Azrael, a chaos spurred by jealousy erupted, and the archesses were secreted away to Earth. The four favored archangels followed, prompting a search that has lasted millennia.

Excerpt:

Azrael smiled, flashing perfect white teeth that sported incisors slightly longer than the norm. Some people naturally looked like that, he knew, but on him it looked different enough that he didn’t smile often. On him, it seemed to fit too perfectly and only served to reinforce the otherworldly impressions people often had when looking at him.

He was a starkly charismatic individual. He was taller than anyone he knew, save perhaps Samael. His voice could literally mesmerize. He was also uncommonly, almost painfully handsome. He wasn’t certain why the Old Man had seen fit to bother with such a thing while simultaneously making him a vampire. It was like the curse of Beethoven, who created the most beautiful music in the world and couldn’t hear it. What good was a beautiful face when placed on a monster?

But Sophie didn’t seem to mind the hint of fang he exposed. In fact, as he brushed her mind, unable to help himself from drawing nearer to her in any way possible, he was surprised to find that she found it attractive. My God, she thought. He really does look like a vampire.

This was the second time she had thought such a thing. If he’d been capable of choking, he would have done so the first time her mind had muttered the impression. Hearing it now had nearly as strong an effect on Azrael. Sophie wasn’t repulsed by vampires. And the idea that he resembled one was appealing to her.

Of course, Azrael was no fool. A lot of girls believed they would enjoy the company of a vampire – if vampires existed. In reality, he knew they would cower or scream or run, or most likely all three.  Still… he found himself hoping.

“Sophie Bryce, right? The maid of honor?” he asked, his smile utterly disarming. He’d had millennia to practice.

Sophie blinked and he read her thoughts. She was desperately trying to find her head in the wake of his sudden presence. She’d been torturing herself over the last few days, and he knew it. He’d watched her every night. Listened to her. He knew damn well that she was drawn to him – and that she hated herself for it.

He sensed it when a slight pain twinged up her arm and Sophie realized that her friend was holding her tight. Taylor’s fingers curled into Sophie’s forearm in utter distraction, her hazel eyes glued to Azrael. He knew she couldn’t help it and wasn’t aware of what she was doing, but the fact that she’d brought his archess even the slightest discomfort was difficult for Az to ignore. It upset him.

And with practiced control, he tamped down the anger.

Sophie, on the other hand, appeared to be glad for the pain. It shot through the dazed fog that Az’s appearance had caused. It also cleared her senses enough to allow her to pull her arm out of Taylor’s grip, clear her throat, and say, “Yes.” He tried not to smile when her voice cracked halfway through the single syllable. She cleared her throat some more and forced a smile to her lips. “That’s me.” She was so fucking cute with half of her glorious golden locks tucked up underneath that Penguins cap. Wisps of it fell about her face, framing it and caressing it the way he wanted to.

He chuckled softly, watching her carefully to gauge the effect his laugh had on her. Sophie’s gold eyes brightened, her lips parted, and her cheeks flushed ever so slightly. Az’s monster reared its head and he felt his vision begin to heat up. If he wasn’t careful, his eyes would begin to glow. “We never got the chance to actually meet the other night,” he told her, forcing himself to continue with the charade.

“No,” she agreed, relieved that she was finally finding her voice. “We didn’t.”

He cocked his head to one side and slid his gaze from hers to regard her friends. He needed to look away – just for a moment. Long enough to get himself under control once more. His gold eyes slowly scanned the faces of her companions – and then stopped on the pair of men who sat behind them.

A quick scan of their minds told him they were recent graduates from Carnegie Mellon University. The one on the right was the son of a wealthy factory owner here in the city. His name was Richard. And he’d been thinking all sorts of biblical things about Sophie that night.

Azrael grew very still and something dark flickered across his face. He knew it was there; he knew he was failing to hide his sudden fury. But he barely cared.

Richard fell back into the curve of his seat and swallowed hard as the blood drained from his face. Below him, Sophie cleared her throat, at once drawing Azrael’s attention. Sophie slowly stood and turned to face him. “Az, these are my friends, Taylor and Emily.” She gestured toward them and they smiled nervously, but politely, nodding in his direction.

Emily and Taylor’s eyes were still a little glazed over at his presence, so, Az allowed some of his vampiric influence to snake around and through the girls, easing them into a more comfortable state of relaxation.

It worked like a charm. Within seconds, Taylor was smiling easily and standing to greet him properly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” she said, extending her hand.

“Likewise,” Az agreed, and with a slight bow, accepted the offered hands of both Taylor and then Emily, who quickly followed suit.

While he shook hands, Sophie’s thoughts echoed through Az’s mind.

She couldn’t believe that her friends weren’t guessing he was the Masked One. It seemed so obvious to her now that she knew his secret. Everything about him screamed of the kind of rock star charisma that it took to hold millions of fans in sway.

Meanwhile, Sophie’s gaze traveled over Azrael’s form, and he tried not to visibly crow with the triumph he felt when she shamelessly took in the way the black button-up shirt under his sports coat stretched taut across the muscles of his chest. She was particularly fond of the curve of his neck where it met his shoulder.

Azrael released Emily’s hand, straightened again, and heard Sophie’s heart rate speed up.

He looked up to see that her sunshine eyes were glassy with unabashed desire. And, as if it would hide the way her mouth watered for him, she had pressed her bottom lip between two perfect, white teeth. Azrael’s gaze locked on the plump lip. He quickly slipped his hands into the pockets of his trench coat as they tightened into fists at his sides, and his nails began to cut into his palms. He imagined her pressing hard enough with her teeth to draw blood.

If she did… it would all be over.

“Juliette mentioned you live in Pittsburgh,” he said, trying to break through not only his tension, but hers. “I’d forgotten.” His tone was gentle, personal. He knew that to her, it was as if they were the only two in the arena.

“For now,” she told him flat-out. She didn’t want to bore him with the fact that she would only be there for two more days, but he was well aware.

“But what are you doing here?” she asked, honestly curious. It was quite a coincidence to her that she had never seen him before in her life – and then, suddenly, she’d seen him twice in the space of a week. She wasn’t stupid; she was wary.

That was okay with him. He had a story and he would use it, but even this lie was too much of a secret for him to share with her friends. Az glanced at Taylor and Emily and smiled an easy, even somewhat shy smile. “It’s a personal matter actually,” he said. “However…” he paused, turned, and glanced up toward the private booths up above them. His band awaited him in one of them; they had a bird’s eye view of the entire arena from their vantage point. He knew because he’d been watching Sophie from it all night.

He also knew that Sophie had never been in one of those suites herself, and he was hoping she’d be tempted enough by what he was about to offer that he could pull her away from her companions at least for a little while. “Second period will begin in a few minutes,” he said, looking back down at her and scorching her once more with stark eyes. “And there is plenty of room in our suite for another guest.” He chanced another glance at the men seated behind Sophie – especially Richard – and was smugly satisfied when the young man looked as though he wanted to piss himself. “Perhaps you would care to join me?” he asked, turning his gaze back on his archess.

He could hear her blood rushing through her veins. He was scaring her and thrilling her at the same time. She was finding it hard to think.

He wasn’t opposed to working with that; he had no desire to stand here and play the good guy much longer anyway.

A gentle push of his power, and it surrounded Sophie. In a few moments, she not only found it difficult to think, she found it impossible. Seconds ago, she’d had a thousand reasons why she should keep away from Azrael. And the fact that he belonged to – was destined to be with – another, was the most powerful.

But just then, every reason she’d had, and in fact, reason itself, fled from her consciousness and she found herself saying, “Yes.” She’d barely whispered it, but it was enough.

Azrael’s smile broadened.

As a writer, when a couple sticks with you for well over two years, whispering in your ear that they demand their story to be told, you know you need to allow them their chance to be set free upon the reading world.

That was the case with the hero and heroine from His Perfect Gift, my novella that’s included in Avon Impulse’s FIVE GOLDEN RINGS Christmas anthology. The Duke of Ashton and Lady Eleanor have a most scandalous past—as in they’ve indulged in each other prior to marriage. Heated kissing and passionate embraces, the stuff of which would get a person ostracized back in their day.

But they were different people in their past—for one, Ashton wasn’t a duke then, his older brother was. Lady Eleanor was younger too, and she trusted in her (drunken, foolish) father to make the right choice for her. When he told Eleanor surely someone better would come along, she’d believed him.

Her father was terribly wrong. Lady Eleanor realizes this now but pride won’t let her admit it. Besides, why in the world would the Duke of Ashton want her after she so rudely rejected him?

That was half the fun in writing this novella. My hero is rather dogged in his pursuit of his lady. Whereas that’s not usually the case in many romances, where the hero tends to be reluctant, believing he’s not worthy, he’s not ready to settle down, etc.

Not my Ashton. He’s not only ready to settle down, he knows he wants to be with the only woman he’s ever truly cared for—Lady Eleanor. Once he sets his sights on her, he’s most determined to make her agree. In any way he can…

Here’s a quick excerpt for you to sample my hero’s pursuit of his lady. Enjoy!

“There’s no need to argue, darling.” He pressed his gloved finger to her mouth, rendering her silent. Her lips tingled at his touch, at the murmured endearment. Desolation filled her when his hand dropped away. “I will keep pursuing you until I finally wear you down.”

The man was truly mad. And she despised how easily he aroused her. “Wearing a lady down isn’t the way you should pursue her,” she tossed over her shoulder as she turned away from him, eager to escape so she could be alone with her feelings and dissect them.

“Really?” he drawled. “Then please inform me exactly how I should convince a certain female that I want her as my duchess?”

She stilled, slowly turned around to face him. He didn’t mean it. He couldn’t. “You jest.”

“Never again will I make light of your feelings. I hope you can offer me the same promise.” He touched the ribbon round her neck again, light as gossamer wings. His finger curled about the end of the bow and tugged, causing the narrow bit of silk to unravel. Pulling it from her neck slowly, the rasp of soft fabric slid across her skin like a caress. She shivered, watched helplessly as he tucked the bit of ribbon in his coat pocket. “A keepsake. To remember the color of your gown the night I declared my renewed intentions for you.”

“Henry.” Her heart stilled, and she pressed her hand to her chest. “Don’t say such things, especially if you don’t mean …”

His fingers clasped around her upper arm, and he tugged her close. “I still want you, Eleanor. You wish for me to be honest, do you not?”

Her eyes slid closed, and his index finger drew across the bared flesh of her shoulder. “Yes,” she said shakily.

“We are meant to be together as husband and wife. I will prove it to you, Lady Eleanor. Watch me.”

Jennifer’s review of More Than A Stranger by Erin Knightley

TITLE: More Than a Stranger
AUTHOR: Erin Knightley
PUBLICATION DATE: 6/5/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

When his family abandoned him at Eton, Benedict Hastings found an unexpected ally in his best friend’s sister. Her letters kept him going–until the day he had to leave everything behind. Years later, Benedict has seen his share of betrayal, but when treachery hits close to home, he turns to his old friend for a safe haven…

After five torturous years on the marriage circuit, Lady Evelyn Moore is finally free to live her life as she wishes. So when her brother shows up with a dashing stranger, she finds herself torn between her dreams…and newfound desires.

Despite his determination to keep Evie at a distance, Benedict cannot deny the attraction that began with a secret correspondence. Yet as they begin to discover each other, the dangers of Benedict’s world find them, threatening their lives, their love and everything they thought they could never have.

REVIEW:
This is a fantastic debut from Erin Knightley that will capture your heart and have you believing in second chances. Evie is a spirited, intelligent woman that has spent her youth writing letters to her brother’s best friend, Benedict Hastings. What started as a simple correspondence turned into something more when Hastings abruptly ends their correspondence for no reason and ultimately breaks Evie’s heart. Seven years later, Hastings is troubled by the events that have occurred in his life and turns to his old friend, Richard, for help. His wish is to come to their family estate in the country for solitude to sort through the horrible predicament that he has found himself in. When they arrive at Richard’s country home, Hastings is shocked and delighted to find that Evie is there and that he may finally have a chance to make amends with this beautiful young woman. When he is initially introduced to Evie, he pretends to be someone other than Benedict Hastings for fear of Evie’s response to the real Hastings and Evie is unaware that the man that broke her heart is currently residing in her family’s home. The attraction between the two is instantaneous and Evie believes that she has finally met her match.

I liked Evie in this novel. She was fun, adventurous and very independent at a time when women were expected to be nothing more than a pretty face. She convinced her family that she needed to take time off from the Season to pursue her own hobbies and would save the husband-hunting for a later date. No man seemed to interest her or captured her attention until she laid eyes on Hastings. Even though he was a stranger to her, there was an instant connection between the two and I enjoyed their scenes together and her snarky comments to him. Hastings was a dashing hero that any woman would like to spend time with but I wish that he would have told her earlier who he really was. Evie deserved the truth and she would have understood the dangerous situation he was in. The letters between the two was a delight to read and added so much to this love story as well as meeting all the members of her family. This was a great story and I am excited to read Richard’s story, A Taste for Scandal, that will be released next month.

REVIEW:
I really enjoyed this book. I have not read the other in the “Cowboys of Cold Creek” series but even though you can tell that there is background stories that were in other stories this one can certainly stand alone.

This has everything a holiday romance should have. Family, animals, snow and love. Honestly I think it would make a great movie for Hallmark or Lifetime. It even had me tearing up at one point.

Caidy is superwoman but yet is down to earth and really just a woman who is trying to make her life perfect after her world was torn apart years ago. Ben is trying to get his life together for himself and his kids. They really are a match made in Heaven.

This is a perfect holiday story and will definitely get you into the Christmas spirit!
