The Tortured Hero

by Beth Ciotta

In real life, I’m attracted to men who make me laugh. A keen sense of humor is incredibly sexy. My husband, in addition to being handsome and kind-hearted, is incredibly funny. Clever funny. I love that. As far as being in a committed relationship, I can’t see myself with a deep, dark, complicated guy.  Odd that I’m attracted to them in fiction and film. Or maybe not.

When we need a break from reality, we often escape by losing ourselves in a movie or book.  It’s our chance to live vicariously through another person, a fictional character. A time and place to live out our fantasies. Although I wouldn’t want to share my real life with a man as tortured and complicated as Daniel Craig’s version of James Bond, I wouldn’t mind losing myself to him for a few hours in fantasy land. His personal intensity, the constant brushes with danger, and the underlying sense of a good heart intrigue and seduce. I think that’s what drew me so strongly to Jayce Bello, the hero of my second novel in the Cupcake Lovers series—THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE.

Born and raised in Sugar Creek, Vermont, Jayce was a bit of a hometown “golden boy”. A popular high school jock who went out of his way to champion and protect the underdog.  Folks weren’t surprised when he grew up and joined the police force, although his move to New York City was unexpected. Everyone figured he’d stay in Sugar Creek. He was, after all, practically joined at the hip of his best friend, Devlin Monroe, and was indeed favored by the entire Monroe clan—Sugar Creek mainstays.

The thing is . . . Jayce has secrets. One of them having to do with his best friend’s sister Rocky Monroe.  Others having to do with his parents. Those secrets aren’t pretty. In fact, they’re downright ugly. I knew the details of Jayce’s dark past when I first wrote him into the debut Cupcake Lover’s novel—FOOL FOR LOVE. But when I got to his featured story in THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE, I wasn’t sure how deep I wanted to go, how much to share with the reader. In the first draft I didn’t share enough. My editor wanted more. And so, along with Rocky’s help, I unburied the sordid memories Jayce had locked deep inside.  I think it’s about as close as I ever want to get to a truly tormented man. That said, I love Jayce Bello. In fantasy land, I’d duke it out with Rocky to win his affections. Although that would never happen.

A)    Rocky would beat the tar out of me.

B)    There’s only one woman for Jayce. Guess who?

The Trouble with Love

Cupcake Lovers #2

THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE
BETH CIOTTA Rocky Monroe’s bad luck is legendary. So it stands to reason that during a quick trip to New York on behalf of the Cupcake Lovers’ forthcoming book, she winds up in the arms of the one man she never wants to see again. So what if he’s also the man she can’t stop dreaming about? Mouth-watering Jayce Bello has always been Rocky’s biggest mistake, and she’s not going to let history repeat itself … unless she gets a new taste of his delicious kisses. When Jayce Bello left Sugar Creek ten years ago, it was the right thing to do—for him and for Rocky, his best friend’s little sister. But one passionate night with gorgeous, reckless Rocky is enough to prove that she’s the missing ingredient in his happiness. Now, with scandalous secrets souring the sweetness of the Cupcake Lovers’ club, Jayce needs to convince Rocky that their love is something to savor

An Excerpt from The Trouble With Love

Jayce’s homecoming had been a dismal affair.  Rolling into Sugar Creek just prior to midnight, he’d parked in front of the chalet he’d grown up in, staring into the darkened overgrown lawn twenty minutes before having the balls to cross over the threshold.  Crossing that threshold represented the meshing of his past, present, and future.  It meant dealing with some shitty-ass memories instead of locking them behind a mental armored door.  Purchasing another property would’ve have been easier, but would’ve entailed admitting defeat.

Screw that.

Because of his time on the force and his years as a private investigator, Jayce had witnessed people battling demons far greater than his own.  Yet whenever he visited Sugar Creek, in particular this house, the past seemed insurmountable.  How could a grown man feel like a vulnerable kid?  Why couldn’t he believe what Dev and Dev’s dad had told him that one terrible night—that it wasn’t his fault?  Normally he kept the painful memories at bay, but by God they thrived inside the four walls of 241 Lark Lane. He hated the power this house had over him.  That his parents had over him—even after death.

Time to come to terms.

Jayce had spent the night bunking on a bare mattress in his old bedroom, alternating between nightmares and insomnia.

This morning, he stood in the shower—hands braced on the tile, head lowered—trying to snap out of a bad mood while the pulsating water pounded his tense shoulders and back.

He was wiped.

Not so much from the long drive or the restless night of sleep but because he was being haunted by a whole new set of memories.  Twenty-four hours chock full of Rocky.  Rocky at the hospital—mugged, rattled, and bloodied.  Rocky striding into a publishing house with kick-ass confidence and curves.  Rocky eating hot dogs in Central Park and bemoaning the treatment of carriage horses.  The list went on.  He couldn’t purge the sound of her laughter or the smell of her shampoo or the sight of her naked luscious body.  He couldn’t shake off the memory of her writhing beneath him in bed, begging for more, screaming his name.  His name.  He kept reliving one moment after another, knowing they were meant to be together.

If they could just get past the bullshit.

Jayce gave up on the shower, slaking water from his body and stepping out onto a folded towel.  Somewhere, in the dozens of boxes stacked in the living room, dining room, and kitchen was a bathmat.  The house was in chaos.  Dev had gone above and beyond, meeting the moving van and getting all of Jayce’s furnishings and belongings inside.  Mostly everything was crammed into the three larger rooms of the fairly small house.  Which was fine.  Jayce had had the walls repainted and the hardwood floors refurbished, but there were still a lot of details left undone.  He wasn’t quite ready to set up house.  Not that he was stalling.

Jayce stepped into a pair of jeans, eyeing his cell when it rang.  Dev.  “Mornin’.”

“You up?”

“You coming over?”

“Just pulled into your driveway.”

Beautiful.

Dev hadn’t been happy when Jayce had called from New York with the news that he and Rocky had quarreled and that she’d be returning to Sugar Creek on her own. The man was fed up with the bad blood between his sister and friend and their constant reluctance to fill him in on the crux of their hostility.  Jayce fully expected Dev to call him on the mat today.  He just wished they could’ve duked it out somewhere else. Just what this house needed—another ugly scene.

Kimberly’s review of With This Kiss: Part Three by Eloisa James

TITLE: With The Kiss
SERIES #: Part 3
CHARACTERS: Grace & Colin
AUTHOR: Eloise James
PUBLICATION DATE: 03/26/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Lieutenant Colin Barry returns from the wars injured in body and spirit, knowing that he has no right to steal Grace from the arms of her fiancé. Yet the same warrior’s spirit that won so many battles at sea is prompting him to throw proprietary to the winds, imitate his pirate father, and simply take what he most desires!

Author’s Note: Don’t forget to read Parts One and Two! Reading this installment first would be like eating the icing before you even get it onto a cupcake.

REVIEW:
This is the third part in the three part series. This is a nice historic short story. Having not read the main books that these original characters came from I am sure that I did not enjoy it as much as someone who has read these stories have.

I am not sure why this was written into parts instead of one book but since the whole story is just over 100 pages it is fine to have it in the three parts. I think anyone who like historical romance will enjoy this story of a lifetime of love.

Kelly’s review of Once Tempted by Laura Moore

TITLE: Once Tempted
SERIES: Silver Creek #1
CHARACTERS: Tess Casari & Ward Knowles
AUTHOR: Laura Moore
PUBLICATION DATE: March 26, 2013
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Sweeping passions, family drama, and searing scandal play out at the magnificent Silver Creek Ranch as the heirs to a powerful dynasty seize their legacy of love.

Oldest son Ward Knowles feels the sprawling California ranch in his blood. And now that the family business has expanded to include a popular resort, he’s working harder than ever. Silver Creek is his legacy and his life, which is fine for the ruggedly sexy ladies’ man and committed bachelor. Love and trust don’t come easily for Ward since he lost his heart to a gold digger—until he meets a shy, unpretentious beauty whose sweet grace is about to turn his jaded heart into a hungry one.

Tess Casari has found sanctuary at Silver Creek, working as an assistant to Ward’s mother, Adele. Grateful for her busy new life running the ranch’s spa and resort, Tess can escape the heartbreak, humiliation, and secret shame of her failed marriage. The last thing she needs is temptation—especially from a man who reminds her so much of the husband who shattered her faith in love. But passion and destiny are about to change the rules for two people who have stopped believing in the healing power of love.

REVIEW:
After a year from hell and a failed marriage Tess does what anyone would do. She lets her best friend blindfold her spin her around in circles and then play pin the finger on the map to her new future. What Tess never expected is that the random placement of her finger on a map will change everything for her. Her faith in people, her faith in love and her faith in herself.

Great story. I loved Tess & Ward. They are just so cute even when they are fighting and trying to act like they don’t like each other. But Erica…. Oh Erica I really wish someone would have pushed her into a pile of _ _ _ _. I can’t wait to see what the Silver Creek series has in store for us next.

Carrie Ann Ryan is interviewing Brayden & Allison

Carrie Ann: Hi everyone! Thank you so much for having me here today! I’m sitting with Brayden and Allison, my characters from HER LUCKY LOVE and we’re going to talk about the fun things in life. As you might know, I’ve already sat them down to have a serious interview so of course, this one is all but the not so serious.

Brayden: Thanks for having us, Carrie Ann, but I’m a little worried about what you have planned.

Carrie Ann: *grins* Oh, I love Kelly and Kimberly, so I wouldn’t do anything to scary. Well…not too much.

Allison: Yes, I’m definitely worried now.

Carrie Ann: You’ll just have to wait and see. So, let’s get started. What did you think of your first kiss?

Brayden: With each other?

Allison: *rolls eyes* I would hope she was asking that since I really don’t want to know who you kissed before me.

Brayden: *leans to kiss her nose* Of course, darling, though if anyone has to be annoyed with past kisses, it’s me.

Allison: *narrows eyes but kisses him softly* Fine. We’ll forget that part and just go onto our first kiss. And really? It was…magical.

Brayden: Good word choice. And I agree…it was…perfect.

Carrie Ann: *sighs* Well, I was going for heat with that question, but y’all made me all swoony. Okay, now, Brayden this one’s for you. Some readers have mentioned to me that you seem to be more…dominant than your brothers. Would you say that’s true?

Brayden: *throws his head back and laughs* How on earth would I know what my brothers do? As for me? Well, I like what I like.

Allison: That’s for sure. *sighs* But he likes what I like to so…

Carrie Ann: See? I knew you’d be perfect for each other. Okay, now the quick questions. Chocolate or Vanilla?

Brayden & Allison: Chocolate.

Brayden: Chocolate on Allison is even better.

Allison: *blushes* Brayden…

Carrie Ann: See? This is what I was hoping for. Soft or Hard?

Allison: Hard then soft.

Brayden: Ditto.

Carrie Ann: *swoons* Well then, I think we get the picture. I’m so glad that after so many years, y’all are happy and you have your own family. It was a long time coming.

Brayden: Tell me about it.

Allison: Totally.

Carrie Ann: Well, thank you so much for having us here and Brayden, Allison, and I will be here to answer questions to fire away!

Brayden Cooper has always been lucky. It’s in his blood and in the coin that he has hanging on a leather tie around his neck. He has everything in the world he could ever want, money: a job, brothers he loves, and the luck that comes with his powers. Yet he’s empty. Everyone but him knows  he loves Allison, yet it’s going to take something stronger than luck to bring them together.

Allison Malone is exhausted. After the death of her abusive husband, her hell of a marriage is finally over and now she’s alone with her three children that are the center of her world. Long hours at work, plus mommy duty at home are taking its toll on her and that’s not the worst of it. Her late husband’s family is in town and they want her children.

The outsiders have secrets of their own and it’s going to take all of the Coopers, especially Brayden’s, help to save them. When trouble attacks, Allison will have to remember that she’s also a woman who needs love, and Brayden might be the one to give that to her.

Warning: Contains one sexy mechanic with a lucky streak, a waitress who needs to give into her temptations, and a love so fierce it’s bound to set the sheets on fire. Again.

Excerpt:

He loved her too much to be with her and take away her independence.

Brayden wasn’t lucky enough to be with someone like her.

He snorted at that last thought.

Well, he was damn lucky at everything else he did. It was just too freaking ironic that he couldn’t be lucky at the one thing he most desperately needed. But, that was the life he’d chosen for himself, and he’d have to learn to live with it. No, he hadn’t chosen who he fell in love with—that was Ally’s doing. But, he had chosen to let her be the best mom she could and stand aside throughout the years. He’d chosen to watch her with another man and watch those kids grow up without him other than just a friend.

REVIEW:
Ok I had a couple of problems.. 1) I never read the first of this series “Asher’s Invention” so I was a little lost on the characters and their history and 2) I didn’t realize this was a Steampunk which I have never really enjoyed. Now with that being said I requested the book so I read it and if I take out the above problems (which are mine not the books) then it is a interesting read.

I was saddened by the end too. So… If you enjoy Steampunk give this book a shot!

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

Deep in Brazil, the Amazons are more than a whispered legend.

Two years ago, ethnobotanist Dr. Elizabeth DeMarco, driven by grief to find a cure for cancer, left her lover mid-proposal to accept a position on a research expedition to the Amazon Rainforest. Kidnapped by guerrillas, she was saved by warriors from the secret all-female civilization of the ancient Amazons. She has been kept prisoner since in the Amazon’s supernaturally hidden valley.

Despite Elizabeth’s rejection, anthropologist Logan Spencer never stopped searching for her. While consulting on a mass grave uncovered in the remote Brazilian interior near the place Elizabeth was kidnapped, Logan falls from a cliff. On the brink of death, he is collected by the Amazons and magically healed. When Logan wakes, the first person he sees is his beloved Elizabeth. Unfortunately, their reunion is less than joyful. The mystical medicine is changing Logan. But there’s no time to study the side-effects. The Amazons plan to steal Logan’s DNA, then kill him. Logan and Elizabeth must escape before dawn or Logan is doomed. Getting him out of the hidden valley won’t be easy. The Amazon’s supernatural powers make the task all but impossible.

REVIEW:
This was a very short story so I will keep my review short. I liked this story it was pretty good. Very different from Melinda’s other books. But still good. My only complain would be that because it was so short I felt like there were some things missing. Some questions left unanswered. But Melinda did leave the story open to continue in this world.

Though he resents her for some reason, she can’t fight their irresistible chemistry—especially when the paparazzi force her to stay at his mansion.

Photographer Nate only agrees to help Holly survive Hollywood for her sister’s sake, but she soon gets under his skin in a way no other woman has. The more time he spends with her, the more his attraction grows and he finds himself opening up to her in ways he never expected. But will ghosts of the past stand in the way of their perfect Hollywood ending?

REVIEW:
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. There were a couple of oddities but I was able to bypass those and enjoy the book. The author is from Australia so there is some language differences. The other thing was there was a little much of the whole “he/she could never love me for me”, etc that got a little tiring but it was still a very enjoyable book.

I enjoyed Nate very much. Holly was a little insecure but I think we were supposed to believe it was because of her being from Australia and the fact that she is the kid sister of a star. But that being said I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed the characters. I enjoyed everything. This is an adorable beach read.

If you enjoy romance books you will really enjoy this one…. Did I say enjoy enough? Oops!

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Makenna James thinks her day can’t get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out.

Caden Grayson is amused when a redhead literally falls at his feet. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he’s terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he’s trapped in his own worst nightmare.

To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

REVIEW:
I first discovered Laura Kaye’s work with “Hearts in Darkness” (HID). This story falls into the contemporary romance genre, which was a first for me. I fell completely and utterly in love with HID on so many levels.

For starters, the cover got my attention. I don’t want to sound shallow but I do love a great cover and this cover caught my attention (I mean, have you seen it?!). After reading the blurb, I was curious. What is so special about the story of two strangers stranded in an elevator? Well, when it is written by Laura Kaye, let’s just say it is insanely hot!

The story is compelling and, at times, heartbreaking. The main characters are likable. You cannot help but get attached to them and wish them well. I have never read a love scene that is so explicitly well described and emotionally-charged. I laughed, cried and groaned while reading HID. A truly heartfelt story. I highly recommend HID. You won’t be disappointed. Promise. Laura Kaye has been on my To-Read list ever since.
