Kelly reviews Marty’s Horrible, Terrible, Very Bad Day by Dakota Cassidy

TITLE: Marty’s Horrible, Terrible, Very Bad Day
SERIES #: Accidental #17
CHARACTERS: Roxanne McNally & Hudson Kahlil
AUTHOR: Dakota Cassidy
NARRATOR: Hollie Jackson
RUN TIME: Hours & Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: February 28, 2019
ORDER LINKS: Audible | Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
For Roxanne McNally, being a grim reaper has never been easy. Now she hates her job more than usual, because she’s been charged with reaping the soul of a legend—werewolf Marty Andrews Flaherty. Marty, together with her equally iconic friends Nina and Wanda, are Rocky’s idols. To say she’s an OOPs fangirl is putting it mildly. No way is she willing to deal with eons of hate Tweets for taking the soul of a paranormal superstar. Reaping supernaturals isn’t even her gig. She’s strictly human-only. No. There must be some mistake with the list, and she’ll get to the bottom of it…if she can just ignore the distracting reappearance of a certain hunky doctor in her life.

Hudson Kahlil—frequently known as Dr. Sexypants among besotted patients and staff—could swear he knows Roxanne from somewhere. As a phoenix who’s regularly reincarnated with no previous knowledge of his past lives, he’s not surprised he can’t place her. Though he’d love to reacquaint himself…and he may get the chance, since they’re both temporarily staying at Marty Flaherty’s home, protecting her while racing to find an unknown threat.

Nina, Wanda and their assorted framily may be able to save Marty’s immortal soul from an enemy whose plan is still unclear…but they can’t save Rocky from the backlash when her secret past connection to Hudson is finally revealed

REVIEW:
What happens when a former human turned werewolf has a heart attack in the middle of her karaoke solo?
Nothing short of pandemonium for the people of OOPS!!
With Marty out of commission and Wanda 5 million months pregnant it is up to Nina to take the lead on this mystery. But every turn seems to bring them to the same conclusion something is afoot at the Circle K and no one can tell them why. Enter Roxanne who has vowed to protect Marty at all cost, the only problem is that her normal job is to take lives not save them.

This was a great quick read. I enjoyed watching how the OOPS clan was going to figure this one out. The addition of a Grim Reaper was really fun too. As always I enjoyed this story immensely and can’t wait for the next installment in this series.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The latest Mystic Bayou novel from Audie Award-nominated author Molly Harper will have you swooning with passion and wailing with laughter!
Cordelia Canton is on a top-secret assignment: travel to Mystic Bayou and use her powers as a touch-know psychic to learn more about the mysterious artifact that’s been pulled from the rift site. She’s partnered with Brendan O’Connor, a rare male banshee whose tall, dark, and broody good looks are a major distraction. Before long, it becomes clear that the artifact they’re studying is sentient – and brimming with supernatural power. Can they harness its magic in time to stop the secret forces conspiring to steal it?

REVIEW:
Another excellent installment in the Mystic Bayou series! I just love Molly Harper’s writing. She always has some way of turning anything into snark and sass. I really enjoyed Cordelia and Brenden’s story. These two were a riot of fun. With the whole one can see the past and one can see the end issue thrown in.

Amanda Ronconi & Jonathan Davis do an amazing job yet again in bringing the characters of Mystic Bayou to life. While I normally don’t like two narrators I have grown to love this story being told by the two of them.

I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series! Because the Goatman is out of the stall.

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts Friendships will be tested
Enemies with surprises up their sleeves
Secrets revealed
Resolves will grow stronger
Freedom in the balance

Starbreaker is the second installment of Amanda Bouchet’s Endeavor trilogy (yes, you need to read book one Nightchaser first). Starbreaker picks up shortly after the events of book one end and brings us deeper into the world of the Nightchaser’s, the Dark Watch and the universe as a whole. We learn a great deal more about Tess and her history. We also learn a lot more about the events that have brought them to where they are today and the battle that has to be fought soon.

This was a great follow up to Nightchaser. I really enjoyed reading this book and getting back with these characters. Amanda does a great job of making you fall in love with each of her characters. Tess and Shade are a great team and I am looking forward to seeing them grow. There is action, excitement, surprises, suspense and love all wrapped up in this story.

If Jax doesn’t get off his duff soon I might have to jump into the story and slap him.

I am so excited for the final book in this trilogy. I can’t wait to see how everything turns out. If you are a SciFi fan or a fan of Amanda Bouchet’s Kingmaker Series you need to get this series!!

Kelly reviews Witch Perfect by Dakota Cassidy

TITLE: Witch Perfect
SERIES #: Witchless in Seattle #11
CHARACTERS: Stephania “Stevie”Cartwright & Crispin “Win” Winterbottom
AUTHOR: Dakota Cassidy
PUBLICATION DATE: April 24, 2020
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Hi, all! I’m back…er, I mean, we’re back and boy do we have a tale to tell!
Now that Win is up and about, he’s been a very busy bee. He’s jumped in with both feet, getting involved in our community and living his best life now that he’s unencumbered by his spy past. He even joined the Ebenezer Falls garden club and made all the female member’s toes curl with his British charm.
On a flower scouting trip for the garden club’s annual spring planting in the town square, while Win is ogling lavender bushes and pansies, I fall head first into a pile of soil where a body’s buried.
Not just anybody either. It’s the body of the husband of a close acquaintance of mine—a close acquaintance who just happens to own the nursery and the pile of dirt I fell into head first.
When he begs me to investigate, there’s no way I’m going to turn him down, but there are obstacles to overcome.
For instance, the love of my life. My International Man of Mystery, who keeps stepping on my investigative toes. It’s proving to be an adjustment solving a mystery with us working in the same space. Add in Dana, who’s gone ‘round the bend, my sudden and unexplained investigative (not to mention ridiculous) possessiveness and everything’s all topsy-turvy.
But there’s a vicious killer on the loose and as we unravel whodunnit, I’m hoping our relationship doesn’t unravel, too…

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts The very last thing that Stevie and Win thought would happen when they went shopping for flowers was to find a dead body. But that is exactly what happened when Stevie literally stumbled onto the body. There is something about this murder that is not sitting well with Stevie she just can’t seem to figure out what it is.

Witch Perfect is another grand adventure of Who done it! Stevie, Win, Arcady, and Belfry are a great team (we didn’t get to see much of Whiskey or Strike in this story). Through in a traumatized Dana and perfectly rounded group of characters. What traumatized Dana you ask? Well this is a spoiler free zone so you will just have to read the story to find out.
Stevie as always is great at getting herself in a bit of a pickle. This time around she gets a little help from the past to save her bacon. Win is still getting comfortable with his new found life. Arcady is Arcady 🙂 And Belfred is hilarious and mayhem all rolled into on one.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I’m already looking forward to the next installment in this series.

Kimberly reviews The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes by G.K. Chesterton & Jacques Futrelle

TITLE: The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes
CHARACTERS: Various
AUTHOR: G.K. Chesterton & Jacques Futrelle
PUBLICATION DATE: 12/18/19
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Enthralled by the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Victorian readers around the world developed a fascination with eccentric detectives and bizarre crimes. Featuring an international array of authors and characters, this compilation of 16 short stories showcases the best of the mysteries inspired by the Baker Street sleuth. Their heroes range from famous figures like G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown and Maurice Leblanc’s Arsene Lupin to lesser-known but equally captivating characters.
“The Problem of the Stolen Rubens,” by Jacques Futrelle, centers on Professor Van Dusen, also known as The Thinking Machine, whose superior mental powers and dispassionate approach resemble Holmes’. Robert Barr’s “The Absent Minded Coterie” presents French detective Eugène Valmont, a cultured and elegant gentleman . . . but a rather poor investigator. “The Murder at Troyte’s Hill,” by Catherine L. Pirkis, “The Ninescore Mystery,” by The Scarlet Pimpernel author Baroness Orczy, and “Cinderella’s Slipper,” by Hugh C. Weir, feature a Victorian novelty—a detective heroine. Holmesians and other lovers of old-time mysteries will thrill to these tales of dark deeds and their discovery.

REVIEW:
As a fan of Sherlock Holmes and ACD’s work I just had a hard time with this writing. ACD wrote Sherlock Holmes to be mentally introverted. He saw things and understood things others could not. And it seems hard for me to imagine there were “rivals” of Holmes that possessed the same attributes.

I will be honest and say I skimmed over a few of the stories. I would start them and just couldn’t bring myself to read every word but I did skim it so I would know where the short story went.

Others I enjoyed for lack of a better word. I had to put aside my fandom of Holmes and ACD and read them for themselves which at times was difficult.

Interview with Taelon & Lisa from The Lasaran by Dianna Duvall.

Hello! Thank you for joining me. I’m very excited to be here, celebrating the release of THE LASARAN, the first book in my new Aldebarian Alliance series. To help you get a feel for some of the characters you’ll encounter in the story, I thought I would borrow Sheldon (a character from my Immortal Guardians series) and have him interview Taelon and Lisa, the hero and heroine of THE LASARAN:

Sheldon: Hi, guys. Nice to meet you. I’m Sheldon.

Lisa: Nice to meet you.

Taelon: Good to meet you.

Sheldon: Everyone around here is very curious about you, Taelon. You really caught us by surprise.

Taelon: I’m equally curious about all of you.

Sheldon: Would you mind answering a few questions? Not many are in the know as far as what you are, but those who ARE tend to be . . . how should I put this . . .

Marcus: *calls from a room down the hallway* Enormous gossips?

Sheldon: *laughs* Yeah. But we keep it in the family so to speak.

Taelon: *smiles* I’d be happy to answer your questions.

Sheldon: Good. So . . . you’re an alien.

Taelon: Yes. I’m from the planet Lasara.

Sheldon: Okay. I think the one burning question that’s currently on everyone’s mind is . . . What’s up with aliens and butt probing?

Taelon: *blinks* What?

Sheldon: I said, what’s up with aliens and—

Taelon: I heard you the first time. I just have no idea what you’re talking about.

Sheldon: You know . . . Aliens are always abducting humans and probing their butts.

Taelon: *looks askance at Lisa*

Lisa: Hey. Don’t look at me. He said ALIENS do it.

Taelon: I admit this is the first time I’ve heard of such.

Sheldon: Really? Lasarans don’t do that?

Taelon: We do not. And on behalf of the Lasaran people, I can tell you with absolute certainty that none of us are interested in discovering what’s up your butt.

Marcus: *calls from the room down the hallway* Good move! With Sheldon, you never know what you’ll find.

Lisa: *laughs*

Sheldon: *scowls* Oh ha freaking ha.

Lisa: *turns to Taelon* By the way, I forgot to mention that Susan and Dana said you should NOT under ANY circumstances read Sheldon’s mind.

Taelon: *regards Sheldon with suspicion* Why?

Sheldon: It’s nothing. I’m not plotting against you or anything. They just like to tease me about some of the sex stuff they see up there.

Taelon: *eyes widen suddenly* Oh. *looks flabbergasted* Really? That sort of thing is legal on Earth? In public?

Sheldon: *face reddens as guffaws erupt down the hallway* She said NOT to read my mind. NOT to read it.

Taelon: *swiftly nods* I will certainly refrain from doing so in the future.

Lisa: *peers up at him curiously* Why? What did you see?

Taelon and Sheldon: Nothing!

Lisa: *lips twitch*

Sheldon: Anyway, as I was saying . . . *pauses* Wait. What was I saying?

Lisa: You were talking about butts.

Sheldon: Right! Speaking of butts, Lisa . . .

Taelon: *expression darkens* Speak of Lisa’s butt and I’ll kick your ass.

Sheldon: Wow. You’ve really got Earth vernacular down, don’t you

Taelon: *narrows his eyes*

Sheldon: *grins* I wasn’t going to mention her butt. I was going to ask her about someone else’s.

Lisa: Taelon has an awesome butt.

Taelon: *grins and takes her hand* Like it, do you?

Lisa: Hell yes.

Sheldon: Gross.

Taelon: *laughs *

Sheldon: So, Lisa, rumor has it you held one of the network’s special ops soldiers at gunpoint and ordered him to strip down to his skivvies.

Lisa: Actually, I held him at gunpoint and Taelon ordered him to strip.

Sheldon: Kinky.

Taelon: *looks at Lisa* I don’t think that word is translating correctly.

Lisa: What is your translator telling you it means?

Taelon: Curly.

Lisa: *grins* Yeah. That’s not it. Not the way he used it anyway.

Sheldon: You have a translator?

Taelon: Yes.

Sheldon: Where?

Taelon: Embedded in my brain.

Sheldon: Cool.

Lisa: *smiles* It is. But we’ve discovered it’s a little like autocorrect and can really miss the boat sometimes. I’ll explain what kinky means to him later.

Sheldon: *winks* I bet you will.

Lisa: *laughs*

Sheldon: So you really did disarm and hold a network special ops soldier at gunpoint?

Lisa: Yes.

Sheldon: That was pretty ballsy.

Taelon: *smiles* Yes it was.

Sheldon: Strong women are so hot.

Taelon: I agree. *wraps an arms around her* And Lisa is the strongest woman I know.

Lisa: *leans into his side* Flatterer.

Sheldon: Don’t go getting all lovey dovey on me, guys. I still have more questions to ask. Taelon . . . *looks at Taelon and sighs* Ah hell. You’re thinking about her butt now, aren’t you?

Lisa: He probably wouldn’t tell you if he was, but I have no problem admitting that I’m thinking about his.

Tracy (Sheldon’s girlfriend): *strolls down the hallway in form-fitting yoga pants and a tank top.* Hi, Guys. Don’t mind me. I’m just passing through on my way to get a drink after my workout.

Sheldon: *stares after her* And now I’m thinking about HER butt. *rises* Catch you later.

Lisa: *watches him leave, then looks at Taelon*

Taelon: *offers her a boyish grin* I WAS thinking about your butt.

Lisa: *laughs*

TITLE: The Night Vanishing
SERIES #: Painter Mann #2
CHARACTERS: Painter Mann
AUTHOR: Dick Wybrow
PUBLICATION DATE: 01/16/20
ORDER LINKS: Amazon

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
After the events of The InBetween, dead private investigator Painter Mann goes to New Orleans to find clues about the identity of his murderer.

Instead, he becomes embroiled (you gotta watch out for getting embroiled, it can sneak up on you) in case involving two-headed monsters, voodoo witches and hundreds of missing ghosts.

He’s also being “hunted” by the Ghost Wranglers, a popular cable TV show determined to find the ghost PI known as Painter Mann.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is an interesting story. The concept is a different one. Painter Mann is dead but still investigating just like he did when he was alive.

He is working on a case but also dealing with a paranormal investigation team (Think Ghost Hunters).

I probably would have given this story 4 instead except I didn’t realize this was the second in the series and there was a bit I didn’t understand.

I would probably try the next in the series just to see if it’s worth it.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr delivers an emotional and triumphant novel about the fierce power of a mother’s love.

REVIEW:
Another sweet romance from Robyn Carr. This story focus’s on Hannah and Noah. When Hannah’s best friend dies she leaves her most precious gift to Hannah…. Her son Noah. And in this story we watch them both heal together from the loss of someone who meant the world to them.

Owen is a good guy who is dealing with his own grief but he has his own helper, Romeo, who steals the scenes he is in. But then I love dogs if they are written well into a story and Romeo is.

Another great story from Robyn Carr. *Check out Carr’s series Virgin River as a Netflix original series*
