REVIEW:
Something was just off with this book for me. I had a hard time with the characters in the beginning even though I did eventually warm up to them. The story is a bit interesting even though it is pretty common. The writing seemed a bit off too so I had a hard time with it.

I have only read a couple of books by Plumley and I can say this was not one of my favorites. The story was so slow at least in the beginning that I found it hard to keep reading it.

Romance N Other Stuff

MoreThanConvMarriageOne of the hardest things for any author, I think, is writing within genre. Which probably sounds odd because a romance writer would naturally write a romance, right? But I write Harlequin Presents and they are short, fast-paced stories focused firmly on the Hero and Heroine. Which put me in a real bind when I began writing More Than A Convenient Marriage?

You see, the book opens when Adara, the heroine, arrives in Greece to find her brother, Nic. (I should interject here that if you live in North America, congratulations! You get a 2in1 with this release and the second story, No Longer Forbidden?, is Nic’s.)

Nic and Adara had very different childhoods, but they were both awful. Nic was rejected because his father found out he was the result of an affair. He was sent away to boarding school never to be heard from again. Adara, meanwhile, remained with their two younger brothers, her resentful, abusive father and their cheating, alcoholic mom. We won’t call it a home.

Adara survived, arranged her own marriage to a man she thought her father would accept, (Gideon is actually her perfect match, they just don’t realize it right away) and waited until her father died to look for the older brother she had never forgotten.

Nic was convinced he had been forgotten. He thought there was a terrible flaw in him that even he hadn’t identified. He grew into an isolated man who eventually formed a distant relationship with his biological father, but it was complicated by the man’s step-daughter, Rowan. She helps him locate his heart—oh, is that where I left it?—and they are building a very nice family when he gets word a strange woman is asking for him at his mansion in Greece.

Gideon, Adara’s husband, didn’t even know she had an older brother. Their marriage was a very convenient, even passionate union until they both thought the other was stepping out. He follows her to Greece convinced she’s meeting a romantic interest. Learning she kept such a huge secret from him is the beginning of a lot of bombshells that wind up clearing their path to love.

I won’t get into the heartbreaks that Gideon and Rowan had to carry. All four characters deserve to find love, but in the middle of that, Adara finds Nic. Her brother. That’s a big deal, right?

And I couldn’t put it on the page.

Not as much as I’d like, anyway. I snuck in quite a bit, all things considered. I didn’t outright cheat the reader of this important moment, but I know that Presents readers are looking for the highs and lows of falling in love. A sibling reconciliation is a different type of book altogether and that’s what I mean by it being hard to stay in genre.

In some ways it’s very freeing to simply allude to the intense emotions of such a moment. Writing those things out can be very cathartic, but also very draining. On the other hand, there’s a wistfulness on the writer’s part. You spend all that time setting up the background of the characters, you want the payoff, but it doesn’t belong. Kill that darling.

I’m actually writing the two younger brothers’ stories as well. The third has been accepted (An Heir To Bind Them, Jun 2013) and I have yet to start the fourth. I want a final bow on this broken family, but I already know it will be hard. Hard to let go, but hard to not write.

What are your thoughts? Do you find it adds depth if the main characters have complex relationships with secondary ones or is it a distraction for you? What are some of your favorite examples? Have you ever felt cheated by an author who glossed over something you thought was important?

It started with a signature…

Rich, powerful and with a beautiful wife to boot, it seems like Greek shipping magnate Gideon Vozaras has it all. But little does the world know his perfect life is all a façade…

After years of disguising her pain behind a flawless smile, untouchable heiress Adara Vozaras has reached breaking point. Her marriage, once held together by an undeniable passion, has become nothing more than a convenience.

But Gideon can’t afford the public scrutiny that a divorce would bring and if there’s one thing his harsh past has taught him, it’s how to fight dirty to keep what’s his…

EXCERPT:

Gideon Vozaras used all his discipline to keep his foot light on the accelerator as he followed the rented car, forcing himself to maintain an unhurried pace along the narrow island road while he gripped the wheel in white-knuckled fists.  When the other car parked outside the palatial gate of an estate, he pulled his own rental onto the shoulder a discreet distance back then stayed in his vehicle to see if the other driver noticed.  As he cut the engine, the AC stopped.  Heat enveloped him.

Welcome to Hell.

He hated Greece at the best of times and today was predicted to be one of the hottest on record.  The air shimmered under the relentless sun and it wasn’t even ten o’clock yet.  But the weather was barely worth noticing.

The gates of the estate were open.  The other car could have driven straight through and up to the house, but stayed parked outside.  He watched the female driver emerge and take a moment to consider the unguarded entrance.  Her shoulders gave a lift and drop as though she screwed up her courage before she took action and walked in.

As she disappeared between imposing brick posts, Gideon left his own car and followed at a measured pace, gut knotting with every step.  Outraged stung his veins.

He wanted to believe that wasn’t his wife, but there was no mistaking Adara Vozaras.  Not for him.  Maybe her tourist clothes of flip-flops, jeans chopped above the knees, a sleeveless top, and a pair of pigtails didn’t fit her usual professional élan, but he knew that backside.  The tug it caused in his blood was indisputable.  No other woman made an immediate sexual fire crackle awake in him like this.  His relentless hunger for Adara had always been his cross to bear and today it was particularly unwelcome.

Spending the week with her mother.  This ain’t Chatham, sweetheart.

He paused as he came alongside her car, glancing inside to see a map of the island on the passenger seat.  A logo in its corner matched the hotel he’d been told she was booked into.  And now she was advising her lover where to meet her?  Walking bold as you please up his million-dollar drive to his billion-dollar house?  The only clue to the estate’s ownership, the shields welded to the gate, were turned back against the brick wall that fenced the estate from the road.

Gideon’s entire body twitched with an urge to slip his reins of control.  He was not a poor man.  He’d got past envying other men their wealth once he’d acquired a level of his own.

Nevertheless, a niggle of his dock-rat inferiority complex wormed to life as he took in what he could see of the shoreline property that rolled into a vineyard and orange grove.  The towering stone house, three stories with turrets on each corner, belonged on an English estate, not a Greek island.  It was twenty bedrooms minimum.  If this was the owner’s weekend retreat, he was an obscenely rich man.

Not that Adara needed a rich man.  She had grown up wanting for nothing.  She had a fortune in her own right plus half of Gideon’s so what was the attraction here?

Sex.

The insidious whisper formed a knot of betrayal behind his breastbone.  Was this why she hadn’t shared that stacked body of hers with him for weeks?  His hands curled into fists as he tried to swallow back his gall.

Dreading what he might see as he looked to the front door, he shifted for a full view.  Adara had paused halfway to the house to speak with a gardener.  A truck overflowing with landscaping tools was parked midway up the drive and workers were crawling like bees over the blooming gardens.

The sun seared the back of Gideon’s neck, strong enough to burn through his shirt to his shoulders, making sweat pool between his shoulder blades and tickle annoyingly down his spine.

They had arrived early this morning, Adara off the ferry, Gideon following in a power boat he was ‘test-piloting.’  She’d been driving a car she’d rented in Athens.  His rental had been negotiated at the marina, but the island was small.  It hadn’t surprised him when she’d driven right past the nose of his car as he had turned onto the main road.

No, the surprise had been the call thirty-six hours previously when their travel agent had dialed his mobile by mistake.  Ever the survivor, Gideon had thought quickly.  He’d mentioned that he’d like to surprise his wife by joining her and within seconds, Gideon had had all the details of Adara’s clandestine trip.

Well, not all.  He didn’t know whom she was here to see or how she’d met her mystery man.   Why was she doing this when he gave her everything she asked for?

He watched Adara’s slender neck bow in disappointment.  Ha.  The bastard wasn’t home.  Grimly satisfied, Gideon folded his arms and waited for his wife.

Winter Romance Review! Kelly reviews Where The Heart Is by Darcy Burke

where the heart isTITLE: Where The Heart Is
SERIES #: A Ribbon Ridge Novella
CHARACTERS: Derek Sumner & Chloe English
AUTHOR: Darcy Burke
PUBLICATION DATE: December 1, 2013

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Home is more than a place . . .

Breaking free from her structured life, Chloe English quits her high-powered job and moves across the country to work as an art teacher. The simple life is all she hoped it would be until her house burns down, leaving her homeless. When a handsome firefighter swoops in to save the day, she can’t believe her luck. He’s laid-back and unassuming, everything she’s looking for in a man—or so he seems. It turns out he’s as ambitious as her ex, comes with a family who could be more stifling than hers, and harbors dark secrets he may never be able to share.

Orphaned as a teenager, Derek Sumner has found a place in his best friend’s family. However, the love and support of his surrogate parents and siblings can’t erase the grief and loss he struggles every Christmas to banish. But this year he meets the fun and sexy Chloe, whose optimism and sense of joy are incredibly contagious. Can she help him face his bleak past so they can forge a happy future?

REVIEW:
4.25 HEARTS Chloe has finally gotten out from under the finger of her family. While she loves them she just can handle not living up to the expectation they put on her. Finally happy in the small down of Ribbon Ridge Chloe sees the future is going to be bright. Except that brightness seems to be coming from the fact that her house is on fire.

Derek has for a long time felt like a lone wolf. Oh he has a family that loves him, even if they are his adopted family. But something is missing in his life and he has yet to figure out what it is. But that is all going to change with a sad twist of fate. It is hard to believe that a fire could ever end in something so good, but only if Derek is willing to take that leap of faith.

This was a great novella. I really loved Derek & Chloe. Both have some baggage that they wish the didn’t, but that just made them more real. I will say that Chloe is beyond patience, more patience than I would have been. But in the end I think it was her patience that was able to finally break down the walls that surround Derek. Okay that is all you get from me. If you want to know more about what happens you will just have to pick up a copy of Where The Heart Is. I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series.

Book Spotlight: Poisoned Web by Crista McHugh

Poisonedweb

The fate of the empire hangs on one slave breaking her silence…

As the Deizian Empire prepares for the upcoming wedding of Emperor Titus Sergius Flavus and Azruha, one mystery remains unsolved—the sudden and unexplained death of the former emperor. And as her wedding gift to Titus, Azurha wants to give him answers. She suspects an unknown poison was involved, and her search for the truth enlists two unlikely allies.

Modius Varro’s thirst for knowledge caused an uproar in Emona three years ago and exiled him to the border town of Madrena. But when Titus falls victim to the same poison, his expertise in medicine becomes essential in solving both the riddle of the former emperor’s death and finding a cure to save the current one. His search leads him to far reaches of the Alpirion realm, to an ancient culture shrouded in secrets, and into the arms of one slave who must break her silence to save the empire.

Jennifer’s Review of Poisoned Web

Review (5 Stars): I loved Tangled Web and this book picks up right after the events of the first one.  Azruha has settled into life as Emperor Titus’s future bride and knows that his father did not die from natural causes.  Because of her experiences as “The Rabbit,” she believes that the Emperor’s father was killed by poison and decides to enlist her trusted slave, Izana to help solve the mystery.  Izana joins forces with Modius, a gifted scholar and son of the mysterious Varro, to determine who poisoned the previous emperor and stop them from trying to kill Titus.  Besides finding answers to this dangerous mystery, the two find that they can’t help being attracted to one another and the dangers that their love may face in the Deizian empire.

I really enjoyed Poisoned Web and Ms. McHugh was able to weave such a thrilling story of action, suspense and romance that will have you wanting more.  I loved Izana’s character and sympathized with her struggles of being a slave and falling in love with a man that was considered above her station.  The fact that she was able to read and write were punishable offenses in the Deizian empire and being a royal slave was better than the life she lived before working for the Emperor.  Modius was a mysterious character for me because he was once a soldier but now a scholar and I was curious as to what secrets he was hiding from everyone, including Izana.  They just fit well as a couple and their search for the deadly poison captivated me until the end.

Poisoned Web is an great sequel to Tangled Web and you should definitely read them in order.  I love Crista McHugh’s stories and I look forward to each book when it is released.  I can’t wait to read more about the Deizian empire in Deception’s Web and see what happens to the characters in the next installment of this great series.

Exclusive Excerpt of Scorched by Mari Mancusi

scorched

Amazon/B&N

Discovering your story’s true beginning…

Sometimes the most difficult part about writing a book is figuring out where to begin. And sometimes authors like myself end up with several false starts before finally discovering the true first page of their book. In the original version of Scorched I started the story with Connor and Caleb at age ten, on the day their father was killed and their destinies changed forever.

But while it’s certainly a dramatic, important scene with tons of dragon action, it doesn’t drop the reader right into the real crux of the current conflict—the dragon egg arriving at the museum and the soldiers trying to steal it. Ultimately, I ended up using a shorter version of this as a flashback later on in the final book. But I do still have some affection for this extended peak into the boys’ family life, before it was torn apart by dragons.

The second deleted chapter shows exactly how much a story’s backdrop can change over the course of editing. In the original version, Trinity goes to an Upper East Side boarding school in New York City, not Texas. And she has a history of hearing voices in her head, rather than hearing the first voice in the museum just before the break-in. And lastly, Connor is already there—watching her, readying to make his move, instead of arriving four months late. In this version you get to meet Trinity’s best friend Caitlin, who is mentioned a lot in the final version of Scorched, but never made a real appearance on the page.

It’s fun to look back at the story as it might have been. And I hope you enjoy the sneak peek into a writer’s head. Oh and by the way? At this stage the working title of the book was “Scales of Time.” (Which no one seemed to like but me! Sigh.)

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Prologue
Year 100, Post-Scorch

“RAWR!!!”

Ten-year-old Caleb Johnson leapt from the pile of twisted iron wreckage he’d been hiding behind, arms outstretched and fingers curled into claws. “I am the dreaded ruby dragon, Epsilon!” he declared, a fierce expression on his sunburned, freckled face. “Beware or I will unleash my mighty flames upon you!” He roared again for emphasis.

His identical twin brother, Connor, squealed into a mixture of delight and surprise as he expertly dodged his brother’s charge and took off running through the Pre-Flag building—down a rubble-filled corridor, beneath a blackened archway, leaping over crumbling cinderblocks and ducking rusty steel pipes, his brother hot on his heels. From above, orange rays of light from the setting sun leaked through cracks in the battered tin roof, effectively illuminating his path.

“You cannot get away!” Caleb cried from behind him. “No one can escape a dragon! RAWR!”

Connor dead-ended in a long, chamber, filled with rotting wooden benches that faced some kind of elevated stage and dusty altar. The roof had held here, allowing him a better glimpse into what the room must have looked like, once upon a time. A church, his mother had told them when they’d taken shelter here earlier that day.

Caleb burst into the room, his crooked teeth bared in a ferocious snarl. Connor laughed, running down the aisle and grabbing a metal scepter that lay abandoned on the ground near the altar. Turning on his brother, he wielded the metal object as if it were a mighty gun-blade.

“I don’t need to escape,” he proclaimed bravely. “I am a Hunter. And I will take you down!” He leapt forward, ready to destroy the mighty dragon once and for–

“Caleb? Connor? Get back here where I can see you.”

Connor lowered his gun-blade. “Awh, Mom.”

“We’re just having fun,” Caleb added.

Their mother poked her head into the chamber. “Well, dinner’s almost ready,” she informed them. “You do want to eat, don’t you?”

It wasn’t really a question. Dropping his makeshift weapon, Conner scrambled after his mother and brother down the rubble-filled hall and into the stifling heat of a smaller entry room with four good walls, ceiling and door. His mother had swept out all the ashes when they’d first arrived and set up a makeshift camp—complete with cinderblock fire, on which she had set her large cast-iron pot. She looked over at her boys and smiled.

“And how are my brave little Dragon Hunters?” she asked, a teasing look in her eyes.

“Starving,” Connor replied, peering into the cauldron where the soup bubbled and boiled. The smoke stung his eyes, but the smell more than made up for it.

“Well, you’re in luck. My snares caught a couple of rats today. So there’s real meat in the soup.” She grabbed two cracked ceramic bowls from one of the worn knapsacks she’d piled in a corner, ladling the cauldron’s contents into them and handing them to her sons. Mom was an expert at making what Dad jokingly called “stone soup” with the scarce ingredients she could scavenge while camping out on the surface lands.

The boys settled down on their sleeping mats and Connor brought the bowl to his mouth, burning his tongue on the steaming liquid. It was a bit bland–they’d run out of salt earlier that week–but it would fill his rumbling stomach and that was all that mattered in the end.

A sudden noise outside made Mom leap to her feet, grabbing the knife from her belt and gripping it tightly in her hand. “Who’s there?” she demanded, her voice almost fierce enough to disguise her fear. “We’re armed and will not hesitate to defend ourselves.”

“Will you now, my love?” asked the tall, burly man sauntering through the door. The boys squealed in delight as they dropped their bowls to great their father. Mom set down her knife, letting out a sigh of relief, as Caleb and Connor fought to hug Dad first. He dropped down to their eye level and ruffled their matching brown heads of hair.

“My boys!” he cried, kissing each of them on the cheek. “Have you been good? Keeping your mother safe for me?”

“Yes, Sir,” Connor assured him with a small salute. “She’s all right. And there’s rat in the soup tonight.”

Dad flashed a smile at Mom. “Rat in the soup,” he repeated. “Well, this is a good night indeed then.” He rose to his feet and walked over to his wife, wrapping his arms around her and squeezing her close.

“Any luck today?” Connor heard her ask in a low voice.

Dad released her from his embrace and walked over to the corner to pull off his dusty jacket and boots. “No,” he replied. “But he’s out there. I can smell his smoke in the air. And his shadow crossed the sun at least twice today. It’s as if he’s searching for something.”

Mom handed him a bowl of soup. “Forget him, then,” she urged. “We’ve been out here thirty days now and he’s not come down. We’re out of food and it’s not good for the boys to be out here so long.”

“Is it really any better down below?” Dad asked her pointedly. “With no dragon heart, we have no money and no means to buy bread or meat. We’ll end up living in Shanty Town. At least up here, we’re free.”

“Free to get eaten by a dragon or murdered by wandering bandits.”

“But thirty pieces of silver, love! I slay this dragon and we’ll live like kings and queens!”

“Please. I’d rather have you alive and well than be any kind of stuffy royalty.”

Dad chuckled at her grumpy face. “Oh, wife,” he teased. “What did I do to deserve you?” He planted a kiss on her sunburned nose. “Okay, you win,” he said. “Tomorrow when the sun rises, we’ll head straight to the C Gate. Go underground and regroup. Maybe send the boys to school for a bit.” He sat down on his mat and started sipping his soup.

Connor and Caleb looked at one another with distaste. The last thing they wanted was to go below again. Where it was cramped and dirty and crowded with other people. They preferred it up here–a surface land filled with undiscovered treasures from the old world. Even if they did have to worry about–

An inhuman howl pierced through the evening air.

Dad was on his feet instantly. “It’s him,” he announced, looking over at Mom with an excited gleam in his eyes. “My last call must have reached him. He’s coming in at last.”

Mom swallowed hard, turning to the boys. “Go to the innermost chamber,” she instructed, her voice thick with fear. “The one with the best roof. And wait there until you hear from us.” She doused the fire and started grabbing their things, stuffing them into bags.

“But Mom!” Connor protested. He didn’t want to miss out on the action.

“No backtalk. Do it now!” Her voice left no room for argument.

The boys reluctantly turned and headed down the rubble-filled corridor, toward the large chamber. When they were out of sight of their parents, Caleb turned to Connor, his eyes shining with excitement. I know a place we can watch from, he told him, using their silent twin speak that no one else could hear. I found it earlier today. Mom will never know.

Connor grinned. Major. Lead the way.

He followed his brother through a now darkened corridor, through a caved-in wall and up a pile of rubble until they reached a broken glass window that led out onto the roof. Caleb squeezed his skinny body through and then turned, motioning for his brother to follow him.

Connor looked reluctantly at the window. I don’t know… he hedged.

Dad’s going to slay a dragon, Connor. You want to miss it?

Connor shook his head. “No, of course not,” he said aloud, making up his mind and climbing through the window, careful not to cut himself on the glass. Without proper medicine, the smallest cut out here could be deadly. He followed his brother up the metal roof, slick from a recent rain, until they could peek over to the other side of the building, where Dad was readying for his fight.

They looked at each other and grinned, then turned back to the scene. Dad had pulled his mighty gun-bade from its holster and readied his shield, the shiny metal gleaming in the dusky eve. As the boys watched, he scanned the darkened sky, eyes locking onto his target, far above. Connor followed his gaze. A Sapphire, he realized. Only half grown by the look of it. Should be an easy fight for an experienced Dragon Hunter like their father.

“It’s so beautiful,” Caleb said with a dreamy sigh. “It’s almost a shame Dad has to kill it.”

Connor shuddered, seeing nothing beautiful about the hard-scaled creature with razor sharp teeth and vacant eyes. The dragon seemed to dance through the sky, flittering about, toying with their father. Dad shrugged the gun-blade onto his shoulder and readied his first shot. Sucked in his breath, lining up his target. Then he pulled the trigger.

The dragon let out an angry screech as the bullet bounced harmlessly off its sapphire plated scales. He’d missed the sweet spot. The one soft scale under the left wing. Dad liked to brag about one-shot kills. But today evidently wasn’t his day.

The creature released a stream of fire–scorching the ground mere feet from where their father had stood–Dad leaping backwards, just in time. Connor scooted further up on the roof, to get a better look, his heart feeling as if it would crack his ribs it was beating so hard.

Come on, Dad! he urged his father silently. Kill it!

Suddenly the dragon whipped its head around, stony eyes locking straight onto Connor as if it had heard his silent cry. Shock caused him to lose his balance on the slippery roof and a moment later he found himself tumbling down the other side, as the dragon’s screech reverberated in his ears.

He slammed onto the desert floor, a sharp pain shooting up his leg as his ankle crumpled and cracked.

“Connor!” Dad cried in a horrified voice. He started toward his son. But the dragon was too quick, coming down for a fast landing. Panicked, Connor tried to scramble away, but his foot dragged uselessly–his ankle likely broken.

He looked up and found himself face to face with the dragon, now standing only a few feet away, studying him with cold eyes. The creature pulled back its head, smoke billowing from its nostrils. Connor swallowed hard. One more moment and the fire would come. And it would be over forever.

He squared his scrawny shoulders instead, ready to face death like a man and–

Suddenly Connor found himself being grabbed and thrown–like a sack full of hot potatoes. He hit the ground a few yards away with a hard thump, the pain shooting up his leg all over again. But it scarcely registered as he watched the dragon let loose a stream of fire–striking his father–who had dropped his shield and gun-blade to save his son–full force in the chest. For a moment, his dad’s body just stood there, as if frozen in place while being engulfed in a sea of flames. Then he fell to the ground, screaming with agony.

“No!” Connor cried. In a fit of adrenaline-pumped rage, he dove at the discarded gun-blade. Gripping it in his hands, he turned to the creature, and, before the dragon could conjure up another blast, charged full force. Stabbing the gun-blade straight into the creature’s soft spot, just as his father had taught him to do.

The dragon bellowed in agony, collapsing to the ground and writhing in pain as the blade pierced its unprotected heart. Connor met the creature’s eyes with his own, staring it down with defiant rage. He yanked out the blood-soaked blade and stabbed the now helpless creature again. And again.

And–

“Connor, stop! He’s dead. The dragon’s dead!” He felt his mother’s arms grab him from behind and drag him away. He collapsed onto the ground, once again aware of the pain in his ankle. His mother dropped to her knees, searching his face with her own tear-stained one.

“Dad?” he managed to say, even though he already knew in his heart what her answer would be.

Mom shook her head. “I’m sorry Connor,” she said, tears streaming down her own cheeks. He buried his face in her chest, letting the grief take him. She held him close, rocking him gently, soothing him in soft whispers.

“I can’t believe he’s gone,” he sobbed against her.

“I know sweetie,” she murmured. “But he died a hero. Always remember that. And you’re a hero, too. The way you killed that dragon…” He could feel the shake of her head. “You must have inherited your father’s skills as a Dragon Hunter.”

He shrugged, pulling away from her embrace and limping over to the dead dragon. He spit on the corpse, wishing there was some way to inflict even more pain and suffering on the creature who had taken his father away from them.

“I’ll have my revenge on the rest of your kind,” he whispered to the dragon. “I won’t rest until dragons have been wiped out for good.”

Chapter Two
New York City, Present Day

“Hey, don’t look now, but that vampire over there is staring at you again.”

Sixteen-year-old Trinity Brown set down her sandwich and spun in the direction her best friend, Caitlin Curry was gazing, across the high school cafeteria. Caitlin swatted her arm.

“I said don’t look. Jeez!”

But it was too late and beyond the trays of mystery meat and half-eaten slices of pizza, Trin found herself locking eyes with the “vampire” in question, who was lounging a few tables away and indeed staring at her intently–not even having the decency to look away when caught in the act.

With tousled brown hair, pale white skin and eyes rimmed in black kohl, she had to admit, he did kind of resemble a creature of the night and his dark gaze sent shivers down her spine. Flushed, she hurriedly dropped her eyes and turned back to her friend.

“That’s not a vampire,” she replied, disguising her sudden unease with a loud, barking laugh. “There’s not a single sparkle on him.”

They erupted into giggles, breaking the spell and Caitlin, seemingly satisfied, dug into her cafeteria special–Salisbury steak. It was hard to fathom how the skinny girl wasn’t three-hundred pounds, the way she wolfed down her food. Trin reached for her own tofu and cheese sandwich that her grandfather had bagged her that morning and took a bite.

But today, her favorite sandwich tasted more like cardboard, and she was unable to shake feeling of the boy’s stare, scorching her backside with the intensity of a thousand suns. Annoyed, she tossed the sandwich back on the table.

“What?” Caitlin asked, her mouth full of mashed potato. It was always a surprise to her when people turned down food. Even if it was only tofu.

Trin frowned. “He’s still staring.” She wasn’t sure how she could tell, sitting with her back to him and all, but somehow she knew it to be true.

“He’s been staring at you all week, girl,” Caitlin reminded her. She strained her neck to get another peek. “Don’t worry–he looks harmless. Cute, even, if only he got rid of that eyeliner and made friends with a tanning bed. Looks to me like Mr. Goth hasn’t seen the sun in the last sixteen years.”

“So who is he again?” Trin asked. Caitlin was a walking Wikipedia when it came to the student body. Especially when it came to boys.

“New kid. Name’s…Connor Johnson, I believe. Came here a week ago. From Seattle or something. They grow ’em scrawny out there. Bi-product of nineties grunge-era parents and too much organic at an impressionable age.”

Trin processed the information. Then she shrugged. “Well, wherever he’s from, I don’t appreciate him staring at me like that,” she replied with a scowl. “It’s freaking me out.” She squirmed in her seat, weirded out, but not quite knowing why.

“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it,” Caitlin assured her. And before Trin could stop her, her friend was on her feet. “Hey dude!” she cried, in a voice loud enough to attract half the cafeteria. “Lay off with the stalker thing, won’t you? Girl’s not interested!”

The cafeteria erupted in laughter and conversation as everyone turned to check out the scene. Trin watched as the boy–Connor–rolled his eyes and rose from his seat with a fluid elegance that surprised her. He grabbed his long, black coat and military style backpack, then strolled leisurely out of the cafeteria without another look back.

“There.” Caitlin said, plopping back down on her own stool, a triumphant look on her freckled face. She pushed her glasses up her nose. “Edward Cullen won’t be bothering you again.”

Trin pushed her sandwich away, no longer hungry. “Yeah,” she said, her voice sounding more disappointed than she’d meant it to. “Probably not.”

Situation seemingly satisfied, Caitlin launched into a lament about the obscene amount of homework Mr. Murphy had given her A period and how there was no way she’d possibly be able to do it all, especially when she had a date with Todd tonight. Trin tried her best to provide the expected murmurs of sympathy to fill the pauses in her best friend’s monologue, but found herself repeatedly stealing glances at the doorway in which Conner had disappeared.

But the strange transfer student didn’t make a reappearance, which was, most likely, for the best. After all, Trin didn’t need any more unwanted attention, that was for sure. And even if the guy did have some kind of new-kid crush on her, he’d learn soon enough from the other students why that was a very bad idea.

Still, there was just something about him. The way he stared at her, with those strange, haunted eyes of his. As if he were desperate to tell her something…

She shook her head. Don’t even go there, Trin. Remember what happened the last time.

Speaking of eyes, she suddenly realized that by managing to shake off one boy’s attentions, she’d managed to gain half of East Side Academy’s. Hunching in her seat, she could sense their laughing mouths and bated breath, as if begging her to do something crazy for their lunchtime amusement. It was a small school, after all, and they all knew her history.

She rose from her seat. “I’m out,” she said, grabbing her brown bag and shoving her sandwich into it.

“But lunch isn’t over,” Caitlin protested.

“I’ve got to hit the nurse’s.”

Her friend nodded understandingly and gave her a mock salute. “Love you girl.”

“Love you, too.”

Trin stuffed her ear buds into her ears, turning up her iPod full blast, as she maneuvered her way through the rows of tables, avoiding eye contact with anyone she passed. The deep, soulful crooning of her favorite Goth singer filled her ears–a particularly effective mix for drowning out her fellow student body. Unfortunately, she didn’t need her ears to know exactly what they were saying about her as she passed. They even had a chant, made up by Amber Madden during a particularly boring seventh grade recess, which had stuck ever since.

Trin Brown is insane
Something wrong with her brain
Hearing voices in her head
Seeing people who are dead.

For the record, Trin had never, at least knowingly, seen anyone dead. And the voices? The doctors had finally come up with a way to silence those permanently. Unfortunately that wasn’t until after the long-ago Sixth Grade Incident of Crazy that no one at East Side Academy seemed willing to forget.

If only she’d been able to attend a different high school. One on the West Side, maybe, where no one knew about her and her broken brain. But East Side Academy was the only one willing to give her a full boat scholarship with her dubious medical record and her grandfather’s dwindling bank account had guilted her into taking it.

Can’t let a few bullies ruin a world-class education, she reminded herself, uttering one of grandfather’s favorite platitudes. Though sometimes she wasn’t sure it was worth it.

Trin turned the corner and headed down the empty, florescent-lit hallway, lined with red lockers, toward the school infirmary. Pushing open the door, she greeted old Nurse Darien, who was sitting at her desk, as always, lost in a romance novel. The nurse gestured vaguely to a table full of prescriptions and Trin grabbed her own, dry swallowing two tablets and setting the bottle back down on the counter. It was a ritual they went through every day.

Might as well hit the library before class, she decided, having no desire to go back to the jeering faces in the cafeteria.

Trudging down the hallway, staring down at her black converse, music still blaring in her ears, Trin turned the corner, assuming the next corridor would be as empty as the last. Instead, she found herself slamming into something solid. Make that someone solid. Very solid, in fact.

“Sorry, she muttered, pulling the ear buds from her ears. “I wasn’t looking where…” She trailed off, her eyes widening as she realized just who she’d slammed into.

None other than Mr. Vampire himself.

Excerpt (uses with permission from Kim Harrison)

Twisting, Nick shoved me off, a nasty snarl on his face. “You could have loved me, too.”

He jumped at me, and I rolled, my back crashing into one of the machines. I shook my head to get the hair from my eyes. Nick was still coming right at me, and I braced myself. We went sprawling again. Nick hauled me into a sitting position, slamming my back up against the machine. “This is for bringing that putrid witch of yours into my apartment.”

My eyes widened and I gasped in pain as his open hand met my cheek in a slap that sent stars through my vision. Trent was yelling, the babies were crying, and my eye felt like it was going to explode.

“And this is for the hell of it!” Nick whispered.

I put a hand up to stop him, and he grabbed it. His other hand was coming at me, and I struggled, trying to get him off!

But before his hand could connect, he was yanked backward and up. Knees going to my chest, I tossed the hair from my eyes at the sodden thunk of fist meeting flesh. Nick reeled into the counter, his feet slipping on the tile floor until he went down. Trent stood between us, his back hunched and shaking the pain from a bleeding hand.

“Son of a bitch.”

Interview & Giveaway with Leah Braemel

Books-n-Kisses  is please to welcome Leah Braemel to the blog today.

Leah, tell us a little about the premise of Slow Ride Home.Slow Ride Home

Two brothers, Ben and Jake Grady, have just inherited the family’s massive 71,000 acre ranch, Bull’s Hollow. But Jake’s taken his father’s death hard, and Ben feels that most of the work to keep the ranch running. He’s just learned that someone is claiming they own part of the ranch and has sold it to someone else, so in order to fight the claim and protect his ownership, his title insurance company sends in one of their claim investigators—who turns out to be Ben’s old high school flame, Allie O’Keefe. While Ben thinks Allie left him when her father was fired from Bull’s Hollow, Allie tells a different, darker story about the last day they spent together. While they’re unraveling the mystery of the ranch’s ownership, they discover the sparks that once flickered between them are still burning bright. But fifteen years is a long time to have been apart and Allie’s not the careful girl she used to be, and letting go of the anger and bitterness of the partner Ben’s family caused her isn’t easy to overcome, no matter how loveable Ben is.

How would you describe your main characters

Ben is stalwart. He’s always known where he belonged, and is ready to put in a long day’s work to keep the ranch going. He’s fair and firm with his hands, but he has some growing up to do too, which he quickly learns the longer Allie is around, and the more of his family’s secrets are revealed.

Allie is smart and smart-mouthed at times, but she’s also conflicted. All her life’s plans were changed by one act one afternoon so now she’s more cautious, but that inner adrenaline junkie she used to be yearns to come out and play. Preferably with Ben.

He cupped her jaw, the fierceness in his expression holding caught in his gaze. “Be strong. Don’t let anyone stop you from being who or what you want. Even me.”

Her breath hitched at his passionate reminder. It had been a long time since any one had believed in her like that. Fifteen years to be precise. Unable to deal with the emotions swirling inside her, she took his hand and dragged him down the path.

At the next pasture, three mares, one heavily pregnant, stopped their grazing to raise their heads and watch them pass. After ordering the dogs to sit beside Allie, Ben diverted from their path to call to one of them. “Hey, Miree, how you doin’, momma?”

The pregnant mare flicked her ears and wandered toward him. Allie never saw Ben reach into his pocket but he suddenly had a carrot stick in his hand.

“That’s my girl.” Once Miree had taken the treat, he lovingly stroked her neck.

Allie climbed onto the wooden fence and perched on the top rung. “I used to dream of them, you know.”

“Of who?”

“Of the horses. Especially the foals, with their big eyes and the way they look at you as if they can see right into your soul.” Rather like the way Ben’s had just seen into her subconscious.

“I used to think the same of you.” Ben’s voice turned husky. He stood behind her, resting his hands lightly on her waist. “I still do.”

“Don’t.” Don’t tempt me to want a relationship with you again unless you’re dead serious. And the idea that she wanted to be in another committed relationship scared the living daylights out of her.

What do you have on your desk?

A ton of sticky-notes, in a rainbow of colors. Seriously there are sticky notes on my monitors and my desk’s hutch with reminders like “the romance is the journey” and “sexual tension in every scene” to names of my characters — where they work, where they live, family trees, to-do lists, you name it. Usually at least one coffee cup, hand cream, note pads, my long-distance glasses (I wear a special pair of glasses set to the distance of my monitor), lip balms, and a theraband so I can do my physiotherapy while I’m sitting at my desk (I wrecked my rotator cuff from sitting typing too many hours a day)

5 Things you have to have to write?

The main thing I need is peace and quiet (as in no puppies whining at me the way our Shih Tzu Seamus is grumbling right now), oh and no cats climbing across my keyboard. I swear Turtle has changed programs with key combinations I didn’t know existed before. (And haven’t been able to set right since.) As for the writing itself, I need to know exactly where I’m going—what the scene needs to show—before I can settle in to writing. At least two cups of coffee in the morning (does that count as one item or two?), and a huge monitor – I use a 27 incher so I don’t have to squint.

Do you write with music on?

Sometimes when I’m writing a first draft — I’ve created several playlists to keep me in the country frame of mind while writing The Grady Legacy books. (You can find the songs that I listened to while writing since I created playlists for them: Ben’s playlist, and now Jake’s)

Plot or write by the seat of your pants?

I’m a die-hard plotter. Even though I have to know where I’m going with each scene, I write numerous drafts—as in at least 5 – 8. The first draft resembles more of an extended outline, with notes about what each scene needs to show, and snippets of conversation. Then in my second draft I’ll go through and fill out the detail, on third draft I fill in more detail and start layering in more emotion. Fourth draft, I start laying in more detail and even more emotion. Because usually I get partway through each draft, I discover a new fact about the hero or heroine that changes the slant of the whole story. Why my brain can’t figure these things out in the first draft, I have no idea, but it’s part of my process. Trouble is it makes me a much slower writer than some.

What’s next for you?

I’m finishing up Book 2 – Jake’s story which is called No Accounting for Cowboys. You get to see more into the secrets Jake’s been keeping and why—and he has more, very personal, family drama heaped on him that forces him to make some hard decisions. Then I’ll be diving straight into book 3—Wrangling the Past as the newest member of the Grady family wrestles with their new found family and identity.

Kimberly reviews The Seduction Of Hypothesis by Delphine Dryden

Seduction of hypothesisTITLE: The Seduction Of Hypothesis
SERIES #: Science of Temptation #2
CHARACTERS: Lindsey & Ben
AUTHOR: Delphine Dryden
PUBLICATION DATE: 05/06/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
(1 Curious Sub + 1 Dom in Denial) – Inhibitions = 4 Naughty Nights

Wildlife biologist Lindsey thought attending a fan convention with her new boyfriend Ben was a great idea—until their relationship fizzled. Lindsey still lusts after her ex—but if he wants her, he’s going to have to prove it.

Ben will do anything to win Lindsey back, and when he sees her in her skimpy black vinyl convention get-up, he realizes what she’s been craving all along. And he is inspired to finally give in to his own dark desire to take complete sexual control…

Lindsey is surprised by her reaction to Ben’s kinky new seduction techniques, and suddenly sees the brilliant but uptight code guru in a different light. After several erotic encounters in hotel rooms and stairwells, she’s falling for Ben all over again. And wondering if the intimate connection will last once they head home…

REVIEW:
While this is the second in a series this book stands alone. This is a book of love and erotica with a science spin. This series proves nerd are sexy. Lindsey is just realizing that she has the tendency to be a sub and while she is still in love with her ex-boyfriend when she hinted about it he thought she was joking but now he realizes she is serious.

What is different about this book is the guy is not a Dom who has been living this life for a long time and turning his girlfriend on to it like so many books are now. They are both new to the experience and yet he is willing to try it and finds he likes it. I enjoyed that part of this. I liked that both were coming out of their shell at the same time. I enjoy this authors writing and if you enjoy a quick erotic romance this is the one to pick up (and don’t forget the first in the series either The Theory Of Attraction).

Disclaimer:
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
