Book #2 in the Paris Secrets trilogy begins with a bang.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Screen is book 2 in Michele Renae’s Paris Secret’s series. If you have not read Window I would suggest starting there. I don’t think that this book would stand alone very good, way to much happens in book one that sets up for book 2.

Like Window, I enjoyed Screen and got to learn more about the characters and what drive them. But one of them has a secret that could destroy what they have been trying to build. It will be interesting to see how Michele solves some of the problems that our heroine and hero have. I am looking forward to Skin book 3 in the Paris Secrets series.

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts David & Allsún have a very heart breaking history. Even more heartbreaking for the fact that Allsún has been hiding a secret from David. A secret that she fears will ruin any chance at friendship that they may or may not have.
David has loved Allsún forever. He has never stopped. The last few years have been hell on him, but when Allsún was in trouble nothing could keep him away from her. If only he was a little quicker.
These two have such a sad story. They both love each other so much. But so much has happened and so much time has past that neither know where the other stands. But before they can ever move forward David & Allsún will have to face demons of the past, present and a possible unknown future.

Another good book from Kait! Immortal Hunter is book 2 in Kait’s Execution Underground. Immortal Hunter picks up where we left off after the events in Twilight Hunter. So if you have not read Twilight Hunter I would suggest going back and read book 1. While you could read IH with our reading TH, but you would miss a bit of David & Allsún’s history.

Book Spotlight & Review: The Other Half by Sarah Rayner

Other Half

The mistress. The Wife. Each has her own story.

Chloë, bright hip and single, is a features editor with ambitions to launch a magazine of her own. When she meets her potential new boss, she knows she shouldn’t mix business with pleasure, but finds it impossible to resist…

Maggie appears to have it all. She’s beautiful, a talented writer, and has a gorgeous husband. But something’s not quite right: his job as a magazine publisher is keeping him in the city until late most evenings, and some nights he doesn’t come home at all…

Told in alternating voices of the mistress and the wife, this story of an affair is a sharp, seductive take on modern love. Who, if anyone, comes out unscathed?

Amazon/B&N

*EXCERPT*

Chloë, the mistress, (so to speak) works with her lover, James, and has gone away with him secretly, to New York.

Chloë still had half an hour before she was due to meet James in Bloomingdales, but found a thickly powdered beautician to give her a makeover.  She stripped Chloë’s face of its usual make-up and clipped her hair back in order to transform her attractive yet far from supermodel features.
And that is exactly where Chloë was – one eye half made-up, the other bare – when there was a screech from across the counter, a screech that made her blood run cold.
‘Chloë! It can’t be! Chloë! Is that you?’ Out of one eye, Chloë verified that the voice belonged to the person she feared it did.
Jean. Her boss, James’s colleague, and James’s wife’s best friend.
Oh. My. God.
Now Jean was at her shoulder.
‘Hi,’ said Chloë weakly, the powdered beautician still determinedly dabbing at her eyelid.
‘Have you come to the conference?’ asked Jean.
‘Er, no . . .’ Chloë thought supersonic speed. ‘I’m on holiday.’
‘Gosh. What a coincidence!’
‘Got a last-minute booking.’ When lying stick close to the truth, then deflect: ‘How about you?’
‘I’m here for the conference. You should know that!’
If she thought about it, Chloë did.
‘So,’ continued Jean, ‘where are you staying?’
‘With friends in the Village.’ Chloë  spoke as best she could with her jaw wide open as the beautician liplined her mouth. ‘How about you?’ Oh please, please, not the Paramount.
‘The Algonquin. I know it’s not trendy but I love it. I can kid myself I’m literary.’
Phew, thought Chloë. Maybe this wasn’t so bad. But – oh, heavens, James! James was meeting her here! If she squinted she could just see her watch: 2.55. She had five minutes to get rid of Jean, at most.
Yet Jean seemed to have no desire to go. ‘So, if you’re here anyway, you should come to the conference, Chloë. I’ll arrange for you to attend. We can go together.’
Aargh! Worse and worse! ‘That would be great.’ Chloë opened her eyes extra wide in horror. The powdered beauty misread the signal, and leapt to attack her with another layer of mascara.
‘Afterwards, if you like, we could go out for supper.’
No, no, no! thought Chloë. ‘I’m afraid I’ve arranged to meet my friends.’ Then, fearing Jean might invite herself, added, ‘They’ve booked Nobu for a birthday bash.’
‘Really?’ Jean was evidently impressed. ‘I gather you have to reserve a table weeks in advance.’
Exactly, thought Chloë.
‘What a hip crowd you must know here.’
‘Oh, I do,’ said Chloë. In for a penny. ‘My friend Matt is a playwright. Lives in the East Village.’
‘Is that where you’re staying?’
‘Um, yes, on Spring Street.’
‘Gosh, how trendy,’ said Jean. ‘Though I’d call that SoHo.’
‘SoHo, East Village, NoHo . . . it’s all the same,’ laughed Chloë, desperately. ‘Eh?’
‘If you say so.’
At that moment, just as she thought she was winning, Chloë saw James weaving his way through Lancôme, Chanel, Bobbi Brown . . .
Drastic action was called for.
Perched on the counter was a huge bottle of eye make-up remover. Hideously oily, but . . . ‘Oh, my God, Jean!’ Chloë shrieked theatrically, and sent it flying. The liquid spilt all over Jean’s designer suit. Then, to make doubly sure, ‘Jean! I am so sorry!’
James was almost upon them. Jean was bent over frantically sponging her jacket with some tissues. The powdered beauty was mopping the counter – it needed one more shriek.
‘Oh, JEAN, how can I make it up to you?’
And – thank God – all at once James seemed to realize what the commotion was about. Chloë saw him dart behind a pillar, just before Jean stood upright, and flee as fast as he could through Christian Dior and Trish McEvoy, past women’s belts and gloves, and out of the nearest door onto Lexington Avenue.

About the Author:

Sarah Rayner author photo 2011 DH 007Sarah Rayner is best known as the author of the international bestseller, One Moment, One Morning and its follow-up, The Two Week Wait. But the British author had a life before that; she spent her childhood in the suburbs of the London, then became a punk rocker, spiked her hair and went to university in Yorkshire to study English and get chilblains.

She returned to London in the late ’80s, flattened her hair and worked in fashion PR for a bit, before her boss told her she was better at writing than schmoozing clients, and suggested she become an advertising copywriter. She took the hint, and after ten years in various London agencies, turned freelance, got some short stories published by women’s magazines, and for many years combined life as an author and copywriter. Sarah now writes fiction full time, and lives in Brighton with her husband and stepson.

Jennifer’s Review of The Other Half

Review (4 Stars): One of the things that I liked about The Other Half was that it told the story of an affair from both the perspectives of the wife, Maggie and the mistress, Chloë.  Maggie loves James and after having a child and being married several years together, they have lost the spark in their relationship.  She would love to have another child but James doesn’t seem to feel the same way and she has been trying everything to bring them closer together.  Chloë is a young woman who meets James at work and quickly becomes involved in a sexual relationship with him which slowly becomes something more.

I liked Maggie from the very beginning and I thought that she was a strong character that was trying to strengthen her relationship with her husband.  I liked reading her story throughout this book and how she dealt with James’ infidelity.  Chloë was a different character for me and I had a hard time sympathizing with her.  She knew James was married from the beginning and was even a child of a broken home due to adultery, yet she still got involved with him.  The Other Half was a very interesting look at the effects of infidelity and how each character changes over the course of the book because of it.  I thought that this book was well-written and I will definitely be reading more from Ms. Rayner.

Kimberly reviews Down On Her Knees by Christine Bell

down on her kneesTITLE: Down On Her Knees
SERIES #: Dare Me #3
CHARACTERS: Courtney & Rafe
AUTHOR: Christine Bell
PUBLICATION DATE: 02/24/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Four lessons, no strings…

Detective Rafe Davenport has always made Courtney DeLollis uneasy. While her instincts whisper, Touch him, her mind says, Run. But since she learned that he’s dominant in the bedroom, she hasn’t been able to forget about it. She should be appalled—she knows all too well what happens when a man has too much control—but a deeper, darker part of her is fascinated…

And so is Rafe. The sexual tension between them is thick enough to touch, and damn, does he want to touch. So he suggests something that will benefit them both. Four scenes—because anything more is a relationship, and Rafe won’t go there ever again. Each scenario is designed to tease and torment. To show Courtney that with every submission comes the reward of scintillating pleasure. But once he has Courtney down on her knees, Rafe realizes that she might be the one woman capable of bringing him to his…

REVIEW:
This was just ok for me. The story was cute and the characters had chemistry. I had a problem with Rafe being labeled a Dom. First he might fall under the controlling label but not Dom. Courtney was a good character. Together they seemed good.

The problem was the sex was unimaginative and the terminology was wrong. They kept saying they had 4 scenes. What was actually happening was a roleplaying date. And other than one scene there was no BDSM that the Dom claimed he was into. It seemed as if the author was jumping on the BDSM bandwagon with no clear understanding of what it is.

Now that being said the story is cute as I said and the characters are good together. The story just might have been better as a contemporary because picking it up as erotica will disappoint.

Kimberly reviews The Righteous & The Wicked by April Emerson

Righteoous and WickedTITLE: The Righteous and The Wicked
CHARACTERS: Emma & Eric
AUTHOR: April Emerson
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/10/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Small moments can seem insignificant until they change the course of a life forever. The sound of a bulldozer. A chance meeting at a gas station. A gust of wind through a chime. Benign events become something more when viewed through the lens of fate.

Emma Santori is a prisoner of tragic memories. Locked in a spiral of depression, she leads a desolate and empty life, trapped in her decrepit home. Rooted in routine, she’s numb and vacant. As a lonely Catholic school teacher, her only joy comes from her young students. One Saturday morning, her isolation is infiltrated by a mysterious architect building a home beside hers.

That man is Eric Wilder and he’s keeping a secret—a secret that’s destroying his life. Filled with guilt and self-loathing, he’s forced to move often. He chooses the small northeastern town of Pine Lake as his latest refuge, and hopes to make a successful attempt at starting his life over. As always, he’s unable to make that happen.

That all changes when he meets Emma. She finds herself drawn to Eric when she accidentally bumps into him, but Eric’s unfazed by their first meeting. When a gust of wind brings these two people together once again, Emma discovers Eric’s secret. She’s forced to battle between her Catholic faith and her desire for this stranger.

Their attraction is intense and they soon discover they’re each lonely and longing for what the other has to offer. As their friendship blossoms, Emma realizes her passion and lust for Eric are the remedy to her depression. Eric discovers his feelings for Emma are the only antidote to his secret burden.

They begin an erotic journey, which leads these beautifully broken people to discover that love can be both righteous and wicked.

REVIEW:
I had the hardest time reading this story. First the writing is just different. Something is off about it and it made it hard to enjoy the story for me. Second Both Emma and Eric are such lost characters that I didn’t understand how they could be attracted to each other. I mean really can one lost soul really find and heal another? Eric sleeps with everything that walks and I really do not enjoy when one of the character sleeps around. And Emma has her own secret that disappointed me when I found out.

This is a very dark and not a carefree love story and while I can appreciate the story for what it is and appreciate it this was just not the story for me.

Natasha reviews The Genesis Project by Tigris Eden

Genesis projectTITLE: The Genesis Project
SERIES #: New Earth #1
CHARACTERS: Genesis Blackmore, Xander Treegold and Adam Reynard
AUTHOR: Tigris Eden
PUBLICATION DATE: 01/28/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Old earth has been deemed unsuitable for life, New Earth is home. With the Uni-Wars over, races have joined together in order to sustain their way of life. All life was considered worth saving, but only one race failed to submit. Humans.
Now extinct, humans are a thing of the past. The people of New Earth won’t acknowledge their hand in their eradication, but they have benefited from it. Dr. Vaggo Blackmore has found the answer, he’s restored his races way of life- sustenance through farming. The one thing that will give them back their long lives….. Blood, human blood.
Biologically engineered in a lab, Genesis Blackmore has always been different. Her father has told her it’s due to her enhancements, the Federated Council sees her as a genetic mutation; and her fellow peers see her as the shiny new toy. Gen has had better days.
Everyone on New Earth has milky white skin, platinum blonde hair, and electric blue eyes. It’s the norm. Genesis’ glossy, black hair, ice blue eyes ringed by gold, would have almost made her socially acceptable- if it wasn’t for her golden skin and blue, gold veins. In a sea of milky white she alone is the dark anomaly.
All Pars get their life’s nourishment through blood plasma. All Pars find their match through the tasting. Gen can do neither, forbidden by her father to do so. She can neither taste, nor be tasted. Something that’s never bothered her until now.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Oh, I’m intrigued! I really enjoyed this book. The beginning is filled with a lot of information that kinda bogs down the story a bit. There is a lot of back-story and information to be shared about the world the characters live in, and at times I was confused by it all. But it does eventually pick up and I’m happy I kept reading. About halfway through, I couldn’t put it down! Genesis is a very strong character, and the author wrote her in such a manner that she will continue to grow and become even stronger. I can’t wait to see the things that Genesis will work through and discover. I also really enjoyed the other two main characters: Xander and Adam. I will say though, that I’m kinda Team Xander! He’s a sweetie, underneath it all – I’m convinced! As a general rule I don’t enjoy love triangles, but the uncertainty with these characters is exciting and I’m enjoying the tension. The book had a few minor editing issues, but it did not take away from the story at all. I’m very excited to read the next installment of this series, because that ending just wasn’t fair!

Kimberly reviews Breathe Into Me by Sara Fawkes

Breathe into MeTITLE: Breathe Into Me
CHARACTERS: Lacey & Everett
AUTHOR: Sara Fawkes
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/08/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
How did my life get so broken? It’s a question Lacey St. James asks herself every day. Stuck raising her little brother in a trailer park while she works a dead end job at a grocery store, she has a stalker ex-boyfriend, a bad reputation, and no way out.

And then, she meets Everett, who changes her entire existence.

Everett is an outsider who’s housesitting his family’s mansion off the coast, and for reasons Lacey can’t understand, he’s completely transfixed by her. He seems determined to show her that life can offer more than she’d ever hoped for, if only she believes in herself. She desperately yearns to trust him, but what happens when she finds out that everything he’s told her is a lie?

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts This book is so sad. Pulled from recent headlines it hits home to bullying. I am not sure Lacey could have anything else go wrong in her life. She is such a sad case and yet someone you want to see pull herself together and show the world she can make it. Everett is so not the alpha male, unless he needs to be, but there is still something about him.

I enjoyed this book. There is just so much that goes on in it that it is hard to not want to keep reading it. The characters, including background characters, are very interesting and their feelings palpable. Well written. And I loved the cover art.

Interview with Kait Ballenger

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Kait Ballenger back to the blog today to chat about her newest release Immortal Hunters.

Kati, for those who missed your first visit can you please share with us a little about yourself Kait Ballenger Author Pix

I am a paranormal romance author, a wife to my loving and amazing husband (who sometimes serves as my personal assistant for writing events lol), a mother to two little angels in heaven, a soon-to-be-professor, an animal lover and owner (1 dog and 2 cats), and a reformed northerner. I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, but now reside in sunny Central Florida. I name my pets after book characters. I have several roses tattooed on my back and I used to work as a professional bellydancer.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Not always, even though I enjoyed writing from the time I was in about fifth grade. When I was very young I wanted to be a singer or a musician or an actress. Then in high school I wanted to be a doctor for a while (specifically an OBGyn, because I thought delivering babies would be a great job), then I decided that med school was too much school, specifically too many math classes (I hate math), so I decided I wanted to a Spanish professor during my first semester of college. Then, finally, in my second semester of my undergrad, I figured it out and decided to be a writer 😉 That’s the only thing that stuck, though my interest in all those other subjects still remains.

Are you a plotter or a panster or combo of both? And can you explain the difference?

I’m a combo of both. A plotter is someone who plots out the vast majority of what they write, before they actually begin writing. A panster is someone who doesn’t plot much and generally goes with the flow of their inspiration. When I first started writing, I was very much a panster, but then I realized that, for me, that wasn’t really conducive to writing well-plotted books. The books I wrote in my panster days needed a lot more rewriting and heavy editing than my current books do. As I’ve grown as a writer, I’ve become more of a plotter. I don’t plot every single detail, but I figure out major points before I begin writing and then let the magic inspiration connect the dots between those points.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I guess the fact that my desk has to be 100% clean before I start writing a book, but then by the time I’m done, it’s like an explosion occurred in my office.

ImmortalHunter_FINALCan you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

My latest release is Immortal Hunter, which is the second book in my Execution Underground paranormal romance series—which just released a week ago—yay! Immortal Hunter is a reunited love story about a couple who separated years ago and are now forced back together by fate and have to reconcile. The hero is a demon hunter, an exorcist, named David Aronowitz and the heroine is a half-Fae and former demon hunter, named Allsún O’Hare and they have to team up together on a hunt for a sadistic demonic monster who has been murdering innocents in Rochester, NY.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

Well the heroes of my series are members of a covert organization called the Execution Underground and each book focuses on one of the members of the Rochester division of the organization. I knew that eventually for one of the books I wanted to write a rekindled love story, and David just seemed like the perfect hero to do that with, so things kind of stemmed from there.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m currently working on book three in the Execution Underground series, Midnight Hunter, which will hopefully be releasing very late this year. I’m also working on the beginnings of a new romantic suspense series, but that isn’t contracted with a publisher yet, so it won’t be out for a while 😉

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

J.K Rowling: because the Harry Potter books were the start of my love of reading.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

If being a writer is what you want to do, then don’t give up. Time spent persevering toward a common goal and a little bit of luck is all that separates published authors from unpublished authors. Also, do it for the right reasons. Only become a writer because you actively love to write, not because you want fame, money, or prestige, because none of those actually come with the job, contrary to popular belief lol.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

Aside from hitting the NYT Bestseller list and seeing one of my books be made into a movie lol…I’d like to take my husband to Japan one day during cherry blossom season. I’ve been there before, but he hasn’t, so I’d like to see him experience that.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Currently, I’m reading Allegiant, the second book in the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth—I loved the first book and totally fell head over heels for Four, so I’m excited to dig into the second book—so I can’t wait to finally sit down and finish it. I’m only 6 chapters in right now.

What is one book everyone should read before they die?

The Bible: which I say for reasons beyond just basic religious affiliation, because it has influenced so many aspects of various cultures and literature across the world as well as for historical value.

What is your favorite time of year & why?

Here in Florida I generally like from the end of February through the beginning of May, so springtime. Up north I like the fall. Spring, because the weather is beautiful here in FL, and fall because I love the colors of the leaves changing and the sort of melancholy end-of-the-year feeling fall brings.

Who is your Celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet them?

My two favorite heartthrobs are Jensen Ackles (specifically as Dean from Supernatural) and Chris Meloni (as Stabler from SVU). I can’t even think about what I would do if I met them, because it wouldn’t be fair to my sweet husband LMAO

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks so much for having me! I hope readers will consider checking out my series!

Kimberly reviews The Education of Victoria by Angela Meadows

education of victoriaTITLE: The Education Of Victoria
CHARACTERS: Victoria
AUTHOR: Angela Meadows
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/01/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Lessons in love and a whole lot more, are in store in this saucy romp set in a European finishing school for young ladies. Packed off to a continental finishing school, 16-year-old Victoria thinks she will be taught how to be a dutiful wife for a gentleman. But she soon discovers that she has a lot to learn in the arts of pleasure at the Venus School for Young Ladies. There she encounters the strictness of Principal Madame Thackeray and her team of tutors. Under their guidance she learns the finer arts of sexual pleasure and discovers that there are plenty of fellow students and staff willing to share their carnal knowledge with this sweet young English rose. On returning to England, she finds her father in financial difficulty, and must turn her newfound education to good use to save the family estate.

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts Umm Wow ok… did I say wow… This was not erotica this was written porn. Good written porn but still. I am not sure there is more than 3 paragraphs written at a time that does not have some kind of sex scene. There is sex is every form and with every person. Nothing is too taboo in this book. Including the fact the main character who starts this journey at what her father thinks is a finishing school but it more of a school of sex is only 16.

First not that I would compare the writing of this book with the Sleeping Beauty series from Anne Rice but if you enjoyed the type of book that the Sleeping Beauty books are then you will enjoy this. There is a slight story wrapped around the character having sex with everything that moves.

I enjoyed the story for what it was but it was a little much at some points. That being said if there is another in the series I will pick it up.

Kimberly reviews Aflame by Krissy Daniels

AflameTITLE: Aflame
SERIES #: Apotheosis, #1
CHARACTERS: Grayce & Zander
AUTHOR: Krissy Daniels
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/07/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
To save her soul, he’ll let her burn.

Grayce has been on the run for years. Having escaped an abusive relationship with a violent psychopath, she is trying to rebuild her life one small step at a time. Things are going well until Zander crosses her path, badass and sexy as hell. His presence awakens heated desires she long ago buried. Last thing Grayce wants is a man, and the way her body reacts to Zander scares her more than the threat of being found.

Tyr will do anything to get his little dove back. She is a Beacon, and her raw, burning energy gives him power and strength. More than the evil that already compels him. But a blond giant of a man hovers protectively around her. No matter. He’ll play with him too.

When Zander rescues Grayce from Tyr’s first attempt to reclaim her, he reveals his superhuman abilities. Power that Grayce also has, but has yet to understand. As predestined soul mates, Zander must help Grace control her rage before her fire threatens to destroy everyone and everything in her path. But his true challenge is more than that—to show her it’s possible to trust and love again.

CONTENT WARNING: Hot sex with a foul-mouthed firecracker.

REVIEW:
What a weird and yet intriguing story. So different than anything I have read before. The characters were interesting and had so much background that I felt like I knew them. The life Grayce has led was so sad and scary that I felt so bad for her. I loved Zander (but then I am a fan of the big alpha possessive kinda guy) and found myself happy and sad for him.

There were a few things that I would have changed. I mean even having the warning of a foul mouthed woman was not enough to describe the language in this book. And I missed the fact that we didn’t get an answer to Grayce’s legal issues… I mean come on she is wanted for murder. Even so I really enjoyed this story.

Looking for something a bit different to read? Love a bit of magic (for lack of a better word) in a story? Like a guy who loves with his whole heart and a woman who is willing to overcome her past? Then this is the book for you.
