Blog Tour & Review: Murder in Merino by Sally Goldenbaum

murder in merino large banner640

I’m delighted to have Sally Goldenbaum here today to talk about her new mystery, Murder in Merino, which is the eighth book in her Seaside Knitters Mystery series.  Please give her a warm welcome.

1. Tell me about your new release.

Murder in Merino is #8 in the Seaside Knitters Mystery series.  (The seventh book, Angora Alibi, will be released in paperback this May as well.)

Murder in Merino takes place in early Autumn as the seaside knitters are preparing for Ben and Nell Endicott’s 40th wedding anniversary.  As the tourists are leaving and plans get underway, a mysterious woman arrives in town, staying at the local B&B.  Her name is Jules Ainsley but that’s about all anyone knows.  Is she a visitor?  A belated vacationer? No one knows for sure–but she becomes a visible figure about town, jogging the paths of Sea Harbor daily and asking lots of questions about the town.

Things become more curious when Izzy and Sam Perry finally put the small house Izzy lived in before marrying Sam on the market, and Jules Ainsley seems determined to buy it–without ever having stepped inside.  But before the open house can be held, a well-loved bartender is found dead in the backyard of the cottage.  When Jules’ name and number are found on the victim’s phone, this slender thread of evidence makes her a person of interest.  Soon the spotlight of suspicion widens to include old friends and town leaders, as a tragic happening, long buried in the sleepy seaside town, is slowly brought to surface and the murderer is found.

2. What inspired you to write mysteries?

I’ve always loved mysteries and read them voraciously from the time I picked up my first Nancy Drew, but my own writing had always focused on other things.  That is, until one fortuitous day when a mystery writing friend asked if I’d be interested in working on a mystery with her.  It was actually a book under contract ( I know…how lucky was I!?!?). She knew I had written other things and thought perhaps our styles would mesh.  She had two contracts (2 different books) to fulfill at the same time and offered me the opportunity to work on one of them with her.  And so I did!  It was a classic mystery and I loved learning the process as we pieced together the clues, the plotting, the characters, etc.  I learned so much from her and was deeply inspired to try it on my own.  So in effect, I was inspired AND mentored through a genre I loved by a wonderful writer…and I have been writing mysteries ever since.

3. What is the most interesting/strange thing that you had to research for your book?

I think maybe it was the geology of Cape Ann, the piece of land north of Boston where my series is set.  Now that may not sound terribly sexy or fascinating, but honestly, it really is (well, maybe not sexy). And it’s important, too, because the area and town of Sea Harbor actually become important characters in the stories, right along with their human counterparts.  Cape Ann is built on bedrock laid down half a billion years ago and it became in our lifetime a hot spot for mining granite (yes–your granite counter tops may have come from Cape Ann!). The area is littered with now-closed quarries, filled now with water and surrounded by lush wildlife.  (And just between you and me, these quarries are PERFECT places to find bodies…)

4. What are you working on now?

Right now I’m working on the ninth book in the Seaside knitters mysteries—and now and then, thinking about another mystery idea…with a new character.  It’s always nice to have ideas floating around in the wings.  Much of the ninth book takes place in a hug old mansion by the sea, now housing The Sea Harbor Day School.  All four of the seaside knitters become involved in the school for various reasons–and when a person important to the school is killed, the knitters are pulled into solving another crime.

5. Are there any authors that have influenced you to become a writer?

I suppose that would be nearly every author who has filled my mind with amazing stories and images and transported me out of my ordinary days and life–from EB White to the Brontes and Jane Austen (when I was in high school I used to write crib sheets for older classmates who weren’t enamored of my Elizabethan heroines as I was!) –to PD James, and Kate Atkinson (oh, to be able to weave many lines of plot together the way she does!) to Anna Quindlen and Alice Hoffman–not to mention all the contemporary mystery writers who may not have been the ones who inspired me to become a writer–but who inspire me now, every time I pick up one of their books, and who are far too numerous to mention.

Thank so much for being here today.

Thank you, Jennifer, for taking the time to talk with me.  I’ve loved being here.

MURDER IN MERINO

It’s autumn in Sea Harbor and as the tourists leave a mysterious guest arrives. When she’s implicated in a crime the Seaside Knitters must quickly table their knitting project and search out a motif for murder.

Fall is usually a relaxing time in Sea Harbor, but it’s turning out to be a busy season for Izzy Chambers Perry. Not only is she helping the Seaside Knitters make a magnificent throw to celebrate the fortieth wedding anniversary of her aunt and uncle, she and her husband are finally selling the cottage she lived in before they married and had a darling baby girl. To Izzy’s surprise, newcomer Julia Ainsley seems determined to buy the home—although she’s never set foot inside.

But on the day of the open house, things take a tragic turn. A body is uncovered in the cottage’s backyard. When the police find Julia’s name and phone number in the victim’s pocket, this slender thread of evidence makes her a person of interest. Soon the spotlight of suspicion widens to include old friends and town leaders, as a tragic happening, long buried in the sleepy seaside town, is slowly brought to the surface.

Before the Endicotts’ joyful anniversary celebration can be realized, the Seaside Knitters must work to unravel the real reason Julia Ainsley has come to their town and the tangled and tragic ties from the past that bind friends and townsfolk together.

Jennifer’s Review of Murder in Merino

Review (4.25 Stars): I’m fairly new to this series since I have only read a couple of books about this wonderful group of ladies.  With that said, I was so glad that even though I wasn’t completely up to date on the previous books in this series, I could easily follow along with the characters of this delightful mystery.  In this mystery, Izzy is settling down to married life with a beautiful baby girl and has begun the process of selling her cottage that she had before she met her husband, Sam. A mysterious new visitor to town, Jules Ainsley, has everyone talking about this beautiful stranger and how she suddenly seems to be everywhere in town.  Including putting a bid on Izzy’s old cottage without once setting foot in it.  When the body of a beloved bartender is found on Izzy’s property, people start wondering if this beautiful new stranger is more deadly than she appears.

One of the things that I loved about Murder in Merino was the strong sense of community that played out through the novel.  These ladies have been friends for a long time and I liked the idea that everyone in town seemed to genuinely care about one another.  I loved spending time in Sea Harbor and getting to know these characters a little more.  I also enjoyed the complex plot twists of the story and I spent most of the book trying to understand more about Jules Ainsley and what her true motives were for being in Sea Harbor.  Murder in Merino is a great cozy mystery that has charming characters and well-written storyline that will make you want to visit this beautiful seaside community.  I now have to go back and read the rest of the series to catch up on the lives of these characters because I want to make sure I’m ready for when the next book is released in this great series.

Kelly’s interview & giveaway with Macy Beckett

Books-n-Kisses is super excited to welcome Macy Beckett back to the blog.  We are celebrating her newest release Make You Mine.

Macy, can you please share with us a little about yourself

You bet! I live in the suburbs of Cincinnati with my husband and three kids, and I “retired” after a decade of teaching to write novels full time. I publish YA sci-fi romance with Disney-Hyperion and *very* steamy adult contemporary romance with Penguin. My favorite color is blue, and I can eat my weight in guacamole.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

No, I was content with reading until I left the work force to stay home with my young children. That’s when I started feeling the need for a creative outlet (and if we’re being honest, an escape too.)

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

Once I get my kids on the bus to school, I park myself in front of the computer and work until I hit a roadblock. Then I’ll go shower and get dressed. By the time I’m finished, I usually have the problem figured out and I return to my computer. Wash, rinse, repeat. That’s a typical writing day for me.

Can you please tell us about your latest book? 9780451465337_large_Make_You_Mine

MAKE YOU MINE follows pastry chef Allie Mauvais and her longtime crush, riverboat captain Marc Dumont. According to legend, Allie’s great-great grandmother cursed the Dumont men so they’d never be luck in love, and none of them have made it to the altar in 99 years. But Allie is determined to change all that. Like all of my romances, it’s light and humorous with plenty of steam.

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

I knew I wanted to set the story in New Orleans, and the first visual that came to me was of a historic riverboat. So I decided to start there, and the rest just fell into place.

Please open Make You Mine to a random page and give us a few lines.

Here’s a random paragraph from chapter one, written in Marc’s point of view:

He had no intention of spending a moment alone with her. He’d learned his lesson back in high school. Against his pawpaw’s advice, Marc had asked Allie to junior prom. He’d kissed her that night and had awoken the next morning to boils beneath his boxers. Pawpaw always said sex with a Mauvais woman would rot your pecker, and after that incident, Marc wasn’t taking any chances with his manhood.

Why risk it?

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

Right now I’m working on a YA project tentatively titled “Starflight,” which will release in 2016 from Disney-Hyperion. I pitched it as Overboard meets Firefly. Basically, a teenage girl indentures herself to the rich boy who tormented her in high school in exchange for passage to a new world. But when he loses his memory, she convinced him that their roles are reversed, then leads him on a series of intergalactic misadventures.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts What does Voodoo got to do with it. Well apparently if you are a male Dumont family it has everything to do with your love life. Well maybe not love life, but commitment to love. You see many many many years ago a curse was put on the Dumont family that the males would never find true love.

Marc says he doesn’t believe in the curse yet when it comes to the sweet, sexy and totally loveable Allie Mauvais he avoids her like the plague. Sadly, he wants nothing more than to be her friend (okay maybe more) but the curse is stopping him. But Fate, oh the fickleness of fate, throws them together Marc learns that cursed or not he can’t avoid Allie any longer.

Such a fun book!!! I love this new series by Macy Beckett. Marc and Allie are so good together! The twists and turns that these two go through make the book light hearted and heartbreaking at the same time. I loved every page and kept turning them to find out if the curse was real or not. Now I can’t tell you the answer to that. What fun would that be.
But, if you are looking for a great new read you need to pick up a copy of Make You Mine!!!

Oh and I can’t wait for book 2 Make you Remember (November 2014) Beau and Devyn are going to burn up the pages I am sure. Question is will it be with love or hate 🙂

Giving InTITLE: Giving In
SERIES #: Surrender Trilogy #2
CHARACTERS: Jenson & Kylie
AUTHOR: Maya Banks
PUBLICATION DATE: May 6, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Kylie sees the way Jensen looks at her. The dark promise in his eyes. That rough edge of dominance she knows he possesses. But dominance is the one thing that frightens her above all else. She and her brother barely survived a childhood steeped in violence and abuse. She could never give up total control and submit to a man. Especially a man like Jensen. Could she?
Jensen sees the shadows in Kylie’s eyes. Knows he has to tread very carefully or risk losing any chance he has with her. All he wants is the opportunity to show her that dominance doesn’t equal pain, bondage or discipline. That emotional surrender is the most powerful of all, and that to submit—fully to him—will fulfill the aching void in her heart in a way nothing else ever will.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Giving In is the second book in Maya Banks’ Surrender Trilogy. Will I enjoyed reading Jensen & Kylie’s story it was just a tad bit slow for me.

There was a lot of emotions in the book. Both Jensen & Kylie have some pretty bad demons in their past that they need to deal with. Jensen thinks that he has dealt with his. While Kyle knows she has not. These two do make a good couple as they both understand what the other has been through.

I am looking forward to Cheesy & Tate’s book. I hope that Chessy brings Tate to his knees.

blinbd faithTITLE: Blind Faith
SERIES #: Sin’s Brother #3
CHARACTERS: Nate Dean & Audrey Madison
AUTHOR: Rebecca Zanetti
PUBLICATION DATE: May 6, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A betrayal he couldn’t forget . . .

For Nate Dean, love is a four-letter word. As part of a secret black-ops military unit, he and his brothers were genetically engineered by the government to be ruthless soldiers with an expiration date. They were loyal only to one another . . . until Nate laid eyes on the woman who stole his heart and blew his world apart. Now, years later, his family is still paying the price for his mistake. But as time runs out, there’s only one person who can save his family: the very woman Nate swore he’d never trust again.

A love she couldn’t deny . . .

The moment Audrey Madison spies Nate across a crowded ballroom, she can barely breathe. He’s just as undeniably sexy as she remembers, yet there’s an edge to him now that’s as irresistible as it is dangerous. When he asks for her help, Audrey can’t refuse. But she has secrets of her own-secrets that, if Nate ever discovers them, may cost them both their lives .

KELLY’S REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts Nate Dean is not only fighting for his life he is fighting for his brothers and the truth. A fight that is close to coming to an end. Nate has a few more things to do before time runs out, find his youngest brother, save Mattie & Shane and make sure the only woman he loves is safe. No matter the cost he must pay.

Book 3 in Rebecca’s Sin Brothers series takes us back into the world of super soldiers, family love and revenge. This was a great book as always Rebecca takes us on a wild journey of the Dean brother’s mission to save the freedom that they fought so hard for. But as time is slowing ticking away and a very deadly deadline looming over them this mission is now in a critical state. Nathan & Audrey’s book has a lot of emotional ups and downs. There is a lot of hurt but a lot more love between these two. The questions is can they overcome the pain from the past to have a future together?

If you have not read the first two books in the Sin Brother series you need to read them before you read Blind Faith. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. The teaser at the end of Blind Faith has my anxiety going 🙂

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts This is the third in the Sin Brothers series and maybe the best so far. This one starts with Audrey and Nate having known each other and been in love years ago so the connection is pretty instantaneous. As with all the brothers they are diamonds in the rough. Trained to be killers and yet have managed to find their hearts in the process. We didn’t get to see a lot of the brothers from the first two books (Matt and Shane) but when we did the love and commitment between them is one that stands the test. Audrey is an interesting character as well. She is so strong but yet is still a little girl wanting her mothers approval.

As with all of Rebecca’s books this is a page turner. It has the feel of the GhostWalkers feel of Christine Feehan so if you like that series you will enjoy this one too. I can’t wait for the next in the series about Jory. Something tells me he will be the best of the four brothers.

Book Spotlight & Review: Nobody by Sarah M. Anderson

Nobody_Cover

Nobody Bodine is a nobody who came from a nobody and will always be a nobody.

He disappears into the shadows-no one sees him if he doesn’t want them to. He exists in neither the white man’s world nor the tribe’s, dispensing vigilante justice when he sees fit. There’s no other place for a man like him in this world.

Until Melinda Mitchell shows up on the rez. From the first moment he lays eyes on her, he can tell there’s something different about her. For starters, she’s not afraid of him. She asks where his scars came from, and why he has so many. But more than that, she sees him. For the first time in his life, Nobody feels like a somebody in her eyes.

Melinda has come west to run the new day care on the White Sandy Reservation. She’s intrigued by this strange man and his tattered skin, and when she discovers that he’s a self-appointed guardian angel for the boy in her care, she realizes that there’s more to Nobody than meets the eyes. But how far will he go to keep the boy safe? And will she be able to draw him into the light?

*EXCERPT*

Chapter One

“You didn’t tell me we were going to have a campfire tonight!”

Nobody Bodine stepped to the edge of the shadows, his gaze focused on the woman who’d spoken. He knew she wouldn’t see him. No one ever did. The thin stand of pines was more than enough cover for him. He stayed back in the darkness, watching from a safe distance. He always kept his distance.

“We have a campfire every night.” Rebel came into view, carrying more logs for the fire. He dropped them and then turned to scan the trees. Damn it, Nobody was going to need a better spot to hide. “Everybody is welcome to sit with us.”

Nobody’s skin prickled. Had he thought this was a safe distance? Safe would be anywhere but here. Safe would be heading to a bar to make sure Lou didn’t go home and beat the hell out of his wife. Safe would be going to make sure Jamie was gonna be okay for the night. Safe was anything—everything—but watching the woman.

But that’s what he was doing. He’d never seen her before but he sure as hell wanted a better look. Proof positive that Nobody was an idiot.
She was crouched down in front of the fire, feeding small sticks into the flame with a wild grin on her face. She wore a long skirt and a tank top. Nobody leaned forward. He could see her bra straps.

He snapped his eyes away from that. He didn’t know who she was but she obviously wasn’t the kind of woman who would give someone like Nobody a second look.

“Melinda!” There was Dr. Mitchell, marching toward the fire with purpose. “What are you doing?”

Melinda. That was a pretty name. Matched her pretty face.

“We haven’t had a campfire since—well, since we were kids! Can we make S’mores?”

What the hell was a somore? Nobody took a step forward so he could hear better. If he had to guess, he’d say the two women were related—sisters, maybe? But this new woman didn’t look much like Dr. Mitchell, who was tall and willowy with that wild mass of yellow curls.

Nobody watched as Dr. Mitchell came to stand next to this Melinda. Melinda put her arm around Dr. Mitchell’s shoulders and leaned against her. They were sisters. They had a lot of the same face, the same pale blue eyes—although Melinda’s were brighter, like the wide-open sky. Melinda was a few inches shorter than her sister, but considerably more . . . shaped. It was hard to miss the curves of her body in that thin tank top she wore over a skirt. Her bra straps were hot pink, although he was trying not to think about that. He wasn’t doing a great job.

Another way she wasn’t like her sister was that Dr. Mitchell didn’t wear anything she didn’t have to—no jewelry, no decoration. Just her doctor’s coat and something to pin her hair back. Melinda was wearing necklaces. He wasn’t close enough that he could tell how many she had, but the firelight was catching on the metal around her neck. And in her ears. And on her fingers. She seemed to single-handedly be making up for the lack of accessories for her sister.

She laughed at something Rebel said as he walked back around the side of the house. Nobody had hardly seen Dr. Mitchell smile, much less laugh, but Melinda threw her head back and laughed with a wild kind of abandon. She didn’t care what other people thought, Nobody could tell. She would wear what she wanted and do what she wanted. The light of the fire caught her hair, making the colors even wilder. He’d never seen hair with red and white streaks painted in it before, but it made her look like she was born in the fire.

Hell, he was starting to feel a little hot himself.

Rebel looked toward the trees again, but he didn’t push the issue. Instead, he settled into his normal spot, telling Melinda Mitchell about life on the rez.

Nobody shouldn’t be here. He didn’t have a place in his life for pretty, fearless women. He should be keeping an eye on Jamie, or, at the very least, checking on his herd of horses. Those two things had been more than enough to keep him busy.

His feet wouldn’t move. Melinda Mitchell was poking at the fire with a stick. Every so often, she’d look at Rebel, but instead of her sister’s devotion, Nobody swore she was rolling her eyes at him. Would she roll her eyes at Nobody? Or would she just cower in fear?

She sat back on her heels, that wild joy all over her face. Damn. He leaned forward to get a better look. Her eyes snapped up, right to where he was. She stood up and moved away from the fire. Toward him.

“What?” Rebel asked, following her gaze.

“Is someone out there?” She pointed—right at him. Not even Rebel could find him in the dark—and this strange white woman was staring at him.

“No,” he heard Rebel say. “Nobody’s there.”

Nobody moved, pulling back into the shadows until he couldn’t see her wild hair or her pretty face. The hair on his arms stood up straight and the hair on his head tried to do the same, despite the tail he wore it in. The darkness wrapped around him until he was nothing but a shadow himself, backing away from the light of the campfire one silent step at a time. When he was far enough away that he could run without worrying about making noise, he turned and raced to where he’d left his horse.

He didn’t know how he did it. Hell, he didn’t even know what ‘it’ was. It wasn’t anything that anyone had ever taught him. All he knew was that if he didn’t want to be seen, he wasn’t seen.

Most of the time, anyway.

He wasn’t a sica, a ghost. For one thing, he was pretty sure he’d never died. Come close a few times, but never actually went over. For another, when he ran, he always had feet. That was the big proof—feet hitting the ground, the earth pushing back against him. Same thing when he got into a brawl. Sicas didn’t break other people’s faces with their bare hands.

The only time Nobody had ever had the same weird sensation had been one time when a storm had blown in over the Badlands. One moment, the sky had been relatively clear as he’d brushed his horses. The next, lightning had struck nearby at the same moment a fierce wind had almost knocked him over. Every single hair on his head had stood straight out. That had almost felt like when he moved into the shadows.

Almost.

Nobody found his horse, Red. Red was a good horse—quiet and careful. She could move through the uncut prairie grass without blowing snot or shying in fear from every little noise. She wasn’t the fastest horse Nobody took care of, but speed wasn’t everything. Plus, she had a tendency to stay put, so Nobody didn’t have to hobble her.

Nobody wasn’t much for fancy names. Most of his horses had names like Spot or Star. Red was red. None of this Whispering Wind of the Plains crap or whatever the people who eventually bought his horses named the animals.

Red came to him with a low whistle, half a mouthful of grass hanging out of her mouth. Nobody patted her neck and then swung himself up on to her bare back. He didn’t own a saddle. Or a bridle for that matter. He didn’t need them.

Something pulled at the edge of his consciousness. That was the other thing he did without knowing how or why—he felt things. Things he shouldn’t feel.

For a moment, his mind turned back to the wild sister of the not-wild doctor. He’d felt something then, too—a pull. Hadn’t that been the whole reason he’d stayed so long?

Not something. Someone. Someone named Melinda.

But the pull he felt right now—he shook Melinda Mitchell from his head. No, it wasn’t her. He tasted fear.

Shit.

Jamie.

Nobody urged Red into a flat-out gallop toward the center of the rez, silently cursing the whole time. What the hell was wrong with him? He shouldn’t have gone to Rebel’s tonight.

Nobody may be a nobody who came from nobody and would always be a nobody, but he’d finally found a purpose in this world. Most people—excepting Rebel and his wife—didn’t look at him. They were either afraid of him—with good reason—or they refused to acknowledge he even existed.

Kids were different. Oh, they were afraid of him, especially the ones who’d been hurt too many times, but it was a lot easier to change a kid’s way of thinking than it was a grown-up who only saw what they wanted to see.

He shouldn’t have let himself get distracted by a woman. He should have been watching over Jamie. That was his job.

The taste of fear got stronger. Panic.

Nobody rode harder.

By the time the lights of the small cluster of houses came into view, Red was foaming with sweat, her sides heaving. Nobody slid off her, mentally promising to give her a good rub-down when they made it back home, away from the porch lights and people.

He slipped into the shadows, edging his way around the houses. A dog lifted its head as he passed, but didn’t bark. They never did.

Jamie’s house didn’t have a porch light, but light spilled out of the windows on the side of the house. From thirty feet away, Nobody heard the shouts of Lou Kills Deer, the screams of Myra Kill Dear, the shattering of glass.

Damn it, he should have been here. Lou was a mean snake when he was sober; Myra wasn’t much better. Together they were one hell of a pair of vicious drunks. Sooner or later, they’d beat each other to death or drive into oncoming traffic or pick the wrong fight in a bar and that would be the end of them. Which would have been fine with Nobody.

Except for their son, Jamie.

Jamie’s light wasn’t on. Nobody prayed that the boy had gone to bed before the drunken arguments had started, that he’d gotten his door locked and the dresser moved over before Lou started punching things.

But that pull told him that hadn’t happened.

He tapped on the window—once, then paused for ten seconds, then quickly two more times. If Jamie was in there, he’d recognize the signal.

A minute later, the window opened. At first, Nobody was relieved to see the kid—but then he saw the blooming bruise over Jamie’s left eye.

Damn it all to hell. He’d let himself be distracted by a woman and Jamie had paid the price.

“It doesn’t hurt,” Jamie said, but his voice wavered and he scrubbed the back of his hand across his nose. “I didn’t cry.”

Nobody nodded, glad that the kid hadn’t given Lou what he wanted.

From the front of the house, Myra screamed.

Nobody slammed his hands on the windowsill and started to heft himself up. He didn’t like Myra Kills Deer. She was a shitty mother who used her son as a shield while taunting her husband. In that, she was a lot like Nobody’s mother. The only real difference was that Myra didn’t hurt her son. Much.

Still, Nobody couldn’t listen as Lou killed her.

Then a crash shook the crappy little house, followed by Lou howling. Looking terrified, Jamie put his hands on Nobody’s shoulders and pushed. “No—he’ll kill you too. Can we just go? I want to go.”

Not likely. Lou was a savage drunk, but Nobody had ten years and thirty pounds of muscle on him, not to mention stone-cold sober reflexes. He could go inside and put an end to Lou Kills Deer and be gone before anyone was the wiser. No one else besides Jamie would know he’d been here. No one would be able to find any proof that he’d been involved, even if they suspected him. And they would only suspect him because of his record.

Nobody stood there, half off the ground, listening as the fight escalated. He wanted nothing more than to show Lou exactly what fear felt like. But Jamie’s eyes pleaded with him.

He hated this, hated knowing that Jamie lived in the same hell Nobody had grown up in. But most of all, he hated that he didn’t do more.

“Please,” Jamie begged. “I want to go home.”

Finally, Nobody relented. He wasn’t here to kill Lou. He was here to protect Jamie, just like he’d always dreamed of someone protecting him.

He dropped back to the ground and turned around. Jamie scrambled out the open window and hung onto him, piggy-back. Jamie buried his head into Nobody’s neck as he ran for Red.

Assuming no one died in that awful house, Lou and Myra would probably spend the next few days drunk and sleeping it off. They wouldn’t even notice that their son was gone. And if they did, Nobody didn’t think they’d care.

He wanted to ride hard for home to put as much space between Jamie and his parents as possible. But Nobody had already pushed Red as far as he dared. So he lifted the kid off his back and onto Red’s.

Then he began the long walk home.

About the Author:

SarahMAndersonhiresAward-winning author Sarah M. Anderson may live east of the Mississippi River, but her heart lies out west on the Great Plains.  With a lifelong love of horses and two history teachers for parents, she had plenty of encouragement to learn everything she could about the tribes of the Great Plains.

When she started writing, it wasn’t long before her characters found themselves out in South Dakota among the Lakota Sioux.  She loves to put people from two different worlds into new situations and to see how their backgrounds and cultures take them someplace they never thought they’d go.  Sarah writes for both Harlequin Desire and Samhain Publishing.

Sarah won the RT Reviewer’s Choice Best Desire of 2012 for A Man of Privilege and accepted the award in person in Kansas City at the RT convention on May 3, 2013.

Combining snarky humor with shirtless cowboys on horseback, Sarah strives to raise awareness of the realities of life on Lakota Indian reservations.  She uses proper Lakota translations when her characters speak their native language.

Sarah lives in Illinois with her husband, son, and rescue dogs.  She is a writer and editor at Mark Twain Media, Inc. an educational publishing company.  When not chasing her son around or writing, she attempts to read, knit and complete home improvement projects on her historical 1895 Queen Anne house.

Jennifer’s Review of Nobody

Review (4.5 Stars):  I have always liked Nobody Bodine because he was this mysterious man that protected the innocent on the reservation but the one person that no one knew much about.  I was so glad that we finally got to learn his story and I couldn’t imagine a better person besides Melinda to help us get to know this amazing man.  Melinda was such a carefree spirit who used art to help break the ice in creating a new daycare center.  She was the first person who could actually see Nobody as a person and wasn’t scared away by the scars and burns all over his body.  She saw him as someone special that went through a rough life and she just wanted to get to know the strong man that he had become now.

Nobody was an amazing guy.  He looked out for the people on the reservation that were trying to make a difference or weren’t able to take care of themselves like the children that were being abused by their parents.  He never wanted anyone else to go through the same hell that he did growing up and this made him such a great hero.  He considered himself to be “broken,” because he believed that no one would want a man that had scars and looked like they were a UFC cage fighter.  He was known as a ghost among his people and he lived his life that way.  I loved seeing him come out of his shell with Melinda and finally get the life that he deserved after being alone for so long.

I’ve enjoyed every romance that Ms. Anderson has put out in the Men of the White Sandy series but I have to say that Nobody is my absolute favorite. I couldn’t get enough of his and Melinda’s story and I was sad to see this book come to an end. He definitely deserved some happiness in his life and I was so glad that Melinda came into his life when he was least expecting it. It is hard not to fall in love with Nobody and want to bring light into his world of darkness like Melinda did.

Kelly reviews Saving His Mate by Savannah Stuart

saving his mateTITLE: Saving His Mate
SERIES #: Crescent Moon #4
CHARACTERS: Rex Serano & Margery
AUTHOR: Savannah Stuart
PUBLICATION DATE: May 5, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
From the moment vampire bounty-hunter Rex Serano meets sexy shifter Margery, he’s smitten. When the alpha of the Kincaid pack asks him to join with them, he’s stunned by the offer, but the real draw is the beautiful, caring female who seems to want nothing to do with him.

Margery is the driving maternal force for her pack and she has one rule: she doesn’t date vampires. Years ago she was nearly killed by rogue vamps and she has no interest in getting involved with one now. No matter how sexy a certain, persistent bounty hunter might be.

When one of Rex’s hunts gets messy, Margery gets caught in the crossfire and he’ll do whatever it takes to protect her. They might be different species but the mating call is undeniable and too strong to ignore. Now they must find a way to reach common ground and trust their instincts if they’re going to fight for a future together.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts The 4th book in Savannah Stuart’s Crescent Moon series was a quick read. But a good quick read. A lot of things happen in a very short period of time. But Savannah does a great job of making the story not feel rushed. Sometimes that is hard to do in a novella. But like every good novella it does leave you wanting more. Wanting to know how Rex & Margery are doing. What is going to happen to them in the future. Well the past ever come back and bite them? So many questions. I hope that Savannah will revisit these two in a future novella and maybe answer a few of these questions.
If you are a fan of Ms. Stuart you will surely enjoy Saving His Mate. If you are new to this series I would suggest starting from the beginning :). Not that you have to Saving His Mate can easily be read as a stand alone.

Kelly & Kimberly review Frisky Business by Tawna Fenske

frisky businessTITLE: Frisky Business
CHARACTERS: William Barclay & Marley Cartman
AUTHOR: Tawna Fenske
PUBLICATION DATE: May 6, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Marley Cartman is fed up with arrogant rich guys who treat her like garbage, so she vows to only date men with modest paychecks and a little dirt under their nails.

Her new boss, William Barclay, is exactly the kind of man she’s trying to avoid: an eccentric millionaire with duct shape shoes and an unexplained vendetta against her.

But as Will and Marley butt heads over grumpy badgers and phallic artifacts, they discover that sometimes the opposite of what you want is exactly what you need.
KELLY’S REVIEW:
4 Hearts She finally did it… She moved to Bend. She is finally doing what she wants to do. Well kinda, Marley is still trying to convince her dad that he doesn’t know best, trying to keep the secrets of her past secrets and trying hard to avoid her very hot, down to earth and uber rich new boss. Why you ask? Because she is has been burned more than once by a man with money.

Frisky Business is a story about new starts, new love and realizing that you have to grab on to what makes you happy. I loved that Marley thinks that all her man problems will be solved simply by dated a man that doesn’t have tons of money. It made it rather funny when she went on some rather interesting dates. My favorite was the model airplane guy…. hehehe.

This was a fun book. Like all of Tawna’s books you will laugh, cry and wonder how the heck she comes up with this stuff. 🙂 If you are looking for a feel good book you really should pick up a copy of Frisky Business.

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
4 Hearts This is a delightful humorous story which I enjoyed very much. I was chuckling/smiling before chapter 3 and didn’t stop most of the story. The humor that is written for Will and Marley is so funny. They are so snide and quick witted. Besides the humor the writing of the story is well done as well.

I have not read anything from this author before but I will be reading her again. While funny the story was also poignant in understanding who you are and what you need to overcome to become that person. I will say that I had a problem with each “average” guy being a jerk or dork. Sure we all want to end up with the millionaire sweetheart average guys are not all bad. I wish there had just been one guy who was average and sweet and a good guy but they just didn’t connect. But that being said I really enjoyed this book very much.

Excerpt

She pulled the cell door open. Metal groaned. And his chest pinched when he realized that was it. She was leaving. After not punishing him like he’d expected, but pleasuring him.
“Why?”
It was the only word he could get out. His throat was thick, his brain still foggy, but none of this—none of what she’d done last night when she’d tended his wound or tonight when she’d brought him to a blistering climax—made sense.
She hesitated, one hand on the door handle, one step to freedom. Then she turned her head back into the room, just enough so he could see the supple line of her jaw and the plump perfection of her lips, but she didn’t meet his eyes. And like it had before, that feeling she was as much a prisoner as was he, slammed into him.
Which would be worse? To be tortured? Or to be forced to torture others and live with the knowledge of what you’ve done day after day after miserable day?

“Because I’m not the monster Zagreus is,” she whispered. “Not yet, anyway.”
