At mid-afternoon the corridors of Valhalla were mostly empty. A good thing since Fane was in the mood to knock aside anyone stupid enough to get in his way.

Why had he gone to Serra?

He knew that she was hurting. And that he was the cause.

But the memory of her wounded expression as he’d walked away from her earlier had haunted him until he’d been driven into seeking her out.

As if he could somehow ease her pain.

Idiot.

Clearly his decision to leave Valhalla for Tibet was a good one.

All he’d done was make matters worse.

Taking the elevator down to the apartments reserved for Sentinels, he entered the sparse space and methodically began to pack his few belongings.

Unlike Serra who’d created a home that reflected her strong, unique personality, he kept his own apartment with nothing more than the bare necessities. A bed, a couch, and a kitchen table. Except for his workroom. Everything in there had been handcrafted from the tools he used to sculpt his figurines to the workbench where he spent countless hours.

That was the one place he could go to find the peace denied to him in most of his life.

He’d packed his few clothes and was just placing the last of his tools in a heavy crate to take with him when a knock on his door interrupted the silence.

His first impulse was to ignore the visitor. Protracted good-byes weren’t on his agenda. But catching a familiar scent, he realized this was one farewell he couldn’t avoid.

Moving through the apartment, he pulled open the front door to reveal the small, red-haired necromancer who’d been in his care for the past decade.

His expression softened. “Callie.”

She smiled, reaching up to touch his neck in a gesture that revealed the depth of their friendship.

“How are you?” she asked softly.

He grimaced. Only the two of them would ever comprehend the bond that had formed when he’d been chosen as her guardian. Or the wrenching sense of loss when the bond had been broken.

“Adjusting.” he said.

She wrinkled her nose, moving her hand to lay it over her heart that now belonged to Duncan O’Conner.

“Yeah, me too.”

Fane narrowed his gaze, suddenly wondering if there was more to this visit than a chance to say goodbye.

“The bastard treating you right?”

She rolled her eyes. “He has a name. And he’s treating me very right.”

He hurriedly held up a hand. “No details , little one,” he muttered.

It wasn’t jealousy. But Callie was like a sister to him. He found it impossible to think of her with any man.

She flashed a teasing grin. “Deal.”

“If you don’t need me to beat Duncan to a blood pulp then what are you doing here?”

Her smile abruptly disappeared, a concern darkening the sapphire of her eyes. “I was hoping that you know where Serra is.”

Fane froze, his instincts on full alert. “Why would I know?”

“Fane.” Callie gave a chiding shake of her head. “You can fool most people, but not me.”

His jaw clenched. He didn’t share his feelings for Serra with anyone. Not even Callie.

“I spoke with her earlier. She said she was tired. Have you checked her rooms?”

“Of course.”

Fane frowned. “Why are you concerned?”

“She told Arel she was going to meet him in the dining hall, but she never showed.”

Jealousy ripped through Fane. The younger Sentinel had been panting after Serra for years. He’d even managed to lure her into a brief affair that had tormented Fane. It was one thing to tell Serra he wanted her to find a man to love, and another to watch her being seduced by a male half his age.

He wasn’t a damned saint.

“Maybe she changed her mind,” he said, taking pleasure in the thought of the arrogant cub being stood up.

“She would have let him know,” Callie insisted. Although, cell phones didn’t work, there were landlines placed throughout Valhalla that made communication easy. “Arel came to me when he searched Valhalla and couldn’t find her.”

Abruptly, Fane remembered Serra’s strange behavior when he’d last seen her.

At the time he’d put it down to anger and wounded pride. Now he had to wonder if there hadn’t been something else wrong.

“You said that you tried her apartment?”

Callie nodded. “She didn’t answer the door.”

“She could be asleep.”

“No, I have a key.” Callie bit her bottom lip. “I went to check on her but she wasn’t there. And – “

Fane ruthlessly crushed the fear that threatened to cloud his years of training.

If something happened to Serra she needed a warrior, not the man who’d wanted her for longer than she would ever know.

“Tell me,” he commanded.

“There was a mess in her bedroom.”

Shit. He gripped the edge of the door, the wood cracking beneath the pressure.

“A mess?” he barked. “Like she’d been attacked?”

“No, her clothes were thrown around like she’d been packing in a hurry.”

Oh. A portion of Fane’s fear eased.

If she’d packed a bag then there was a chance this was nothing more than a misunderstanding.

“She has a home south of here,” he pointed out. Most psychics had private homes in isolated areas where they could get away from the “psychic noise” caused by living in a crowded community. “Maybe she was going there.”

“Without a word to anyone? I even called Inhera to see if Serra had been called away on assignment.”

Inhera was the leader of the psychics and was responsible for scheduling their duties.

Fane grimaced. “She might have felt a need to leave Valhalla that had nothing to do with her job.”

Callie stabbed him with an accusing glare. “I know that she was upset, and why. But Serra has never just disappeared. She knows how worried I would be.”

Fane gave a slow nod.

Callie was right.

Even if she was pissed as hell with him, Serra wouldn’t leave without gaining approval from Inhera.

And more importantly, without saying something to Callie and her foster parents.

“Damn.”

He spun on his heel to cross to the fare side of his living room where he laid his hand on a scanner. It took only a second for his fingerprints to be accepted and for a panel in the wall to slide open to reveal a hidden room that was built into all the Sentinel’s apartments.

“Fane?” Callie murmured in confusion, following him into the room and gazing at the high-tech equipment in fascination.

It couldn’t compare to the command center at the lowest level of Valhalla, but it was built with steel walls lined with powerful computers, which were linked to the satellite feeds that kept track of government agencies. They also ran surveillance monitors.

Including surveillance for Valhalla.

Going to the nearest computer he tapped on the keys to bring up the camera that monitored the hallway outside Serra’s apartment.

“I want to check the tapes,” he muttered, clicking the rewind until he reached the point of Serra’s first entering her apartment.

“Why?” Callie demanded.

“There was something bothering her.”

He watched as she opened her door and then bent down to pick up something off the ground. What was it? He zoomed in. A gift-wrapped package. Was it the locket he’d seen her holding?

She entered the apartment and closed the door. He zoomed past Callie’s visit and his own arrival and abrupt departure. After that there was…nothing.

No one entered the hallway. Not until Serra’s door was opened and she walked away from her apartment with a suitcase clutched in her hand.

Once again he zoomed in, a cold trickle of sweat inching down his spine. There was no mistaking the pallor of her skin and the tightness of her features. Twice she reached up to rub her temple, as if she were in pain.

“Goddammit,” he growled, clicking to another camera to watch her progress through Valhalla. “I should have insisted she tell me.”

Callie swore beneath her breath. “Considering you were more than likely what was bothering her, I doubt she would have shared.”

He accepted the familiar pang of guilt, he deserved it, but he gave a shake of his head at the thought this was about his decision to leave.

Watching Serra take a tunnel to the outer garage and halting next to her personal SUV, Fane scowled in confusion.

She walked past a dozen friends who’d all tried to get her attention, her expression unfocused and her movements lacking her usual grace.

That wasn’t like Serra.

Then she opened the back of her SUV and shoved in her vintage Louis Vuitton suitcase that had been a gift from her parent. Callie gasped in disbelief.

“Okay that’s it. There something really, really wrong,” she muttered. “Last year Serra nearly ripped off the head of a bellboy who tried to touch the handle of her back without gloves on. She would never toss it around like a sack of garbage.”

Fane was moving before he even realized he’d made his decision.

“I’ll find her.”

Jennifer’s Review of Blood Assassin

Review (4.5 Stars): This is the second book in the Sentinel series and I enjoyed it just as much as the first. I liked Serra and Fane together as a couple but I definitely wanted to smack him a few times because he denied his feelings for Serra for so long and then suddenly when she was in danger, his true feelings came to light.  I really liked Serra because she just had this strong personality and was a firecracker so you didn’t want to mess with her. I thought she was perfect for Fane but I was sad that it took him so long to figure out what he wanted, when he had this beautiful woman in front of him with her heart basically in her hands.

Bas was an interesting character because I was never sure if I liked him or not.  He basically kidnapped Serra to make her help him find his daughter but I always got the feeling that there was more to him than what he was showing us.  He did whatever he needed to protect his own family and there was no way that I would ever trust the word of this man.  Or turn my back on him.

Blood Assassin was an enjoyable thrill-ride of emotions and I am always amazed at how Ms. Ivy is able to grab hold of you with each of her novels. I’m looking forward to seeing if the next book will tell us what happened with Bas or if other characters will have their own happy endings.

Somehow Julian must find a way to make her succumb to temptation … without losing his heart and revealing the haunting mistakes of his past.

She certainly can’t afford the distraction of her darkly irresistible employer, or the smoldering desire he ignites within her.

Bad news always came in threes, while the miserly gods of good fortune meted out their gifts one at a time at long intervals. Though the first to admit that he didn’t deserve much in the way of luck, Julian Fortescue, Duke of Denford, would have liked a little more time to savor his victory.

A week maybe. Would that have been too much to ask? A week to enjoy the fact that two years after becoming a duke, he was now also a rich one?

Not that the arrival of his mother from Ireland was necessarily a bad thing. But he wondered what favor—or three—she was going to claim. Doubtless something vastly inconvenient.

She sailed into the faded grandeur of the first floor saloon at Fortescue House, trailing gauze scarves and a cloud of eau de cologne. “My darling boy! As handsome as ever. You haven’t changed a bit.”

He could say the same of her. Mrs. Osbourne, formerly Mrs. Fortescue, born Julia Hope Gore, had defied the passage of time. Her black hair contained barely a thread of gray and her pale skin, though the youthful glow had long faded, was a fine setting for blue eyes undulled by age. At almost fifty she still possessed the beauty and gaiety that used to provoke the Dublin gallants to poetry. Julian, her cynical son, attributed this eternal youth to always getting her own way and never worrying about anything.

“Neither have you, Mother.” He took her hands and kissed her on both cheeks. “How are the girls?”

“They are well. But I’ve become an old lady in the years since you took the trouble to visit me,” she said, tilting her head coquettishly. One corner of his brain registered that her bonnet, new and adorned with ostrich plumes, had not come cheap.

“I beg your pardon. My affairs kept me from making the journey to Ireland, and now there is no need. As for the rest of your speech, it is too absurd to answer. You know you look ravishing. What are you doing in London?”

“Are you not going to offer your poor mother a seat and a little something to fortify her after her voyage all the way across the Irish Sea?”

“I beg your pardon, my dear. Your toilette is perfection itself so it didn’t occur to me that you were travel-soiled.”

“As it happens I arrived yesterday. I came only from the Pulteney Hotel this morning.”

“The arduous drive from Piccadilly must have worn you out.”

As he led her to the sofa and fetched a glass of madeira, her favorite wine, from the tray on the console table, he wondered at this additional sign of prosperity; the hotel was one of the best in London. No doubt she would, in her own good time, reveal why she hadn’t asked to stay with him at Fortescue House. Then again, given his home’s meager comforts and inadequate staff, perhaps, now that he was rich, he should move into the Pulteney himself.

He raised his glass. “To you, Mother.”

“To us,” she responded. “And the pursuit of happiness.” Julian felt a momentary pang at hearing the old toast again. His father had been impressed by the American Declaration of Independence, claiming to greatly admire a nation founded on such an admirable ambition. Osbourne, his mother’s second husband, hadn’t shared the sentiment.

Jennifer’s Review of The Duke of Dark Desires

Review (4.5 Stars): Julian Fortescue is looking for a governess to take care of his three half-sisters that his mother left in his care and soon finds the beautiful Jane Grey to fill the position but he has plans to have Jane become his mistress as well.  Jane is looking to find the person responsible for the tragic death of her family and sees this job as the perfect opportunity to get the answers she needs.  But soon the relationship between Jane and Julian grows into something more than just being an employer and Jane comes to realize that Julian may be the man that she has been seeking all along.

The Duke of Dark Desires was a delightful novel with the perfect combination of romance and mystery that will keep you entertained until its conclusion.  I loved Jane as a character because she was a strong, independent woman yet she was very caring and sweet with Julian’s sisters.  I liked how she wouldn’t put up with Julian’s behavior and some of their scenes had me laughing out loud in the beginning.  This book has a little bit of everything and the way Jane’s family died was very dark and tragic and I was hoping that she would finally find the answers that she sought so desperately. Great book and I can’t wait to read more from the talented Ms. Neville.

SERIES #: The McKinney Brothers #2
CHARACTERS: Hannah & Stephan
AUTHOR: Claudia Conner
PUBLICATION DATE: 01/20/15
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
When a McKinney brother falls in love, powerful emotion and overwhelming desire are never far behind.

Two hearts locked away . . . Hannah Walker spends her days coaching children through injury and trauma, one therapeutic horseback ride at a time. She knows all too well how violence can change a child and leave scars that never heal. It’s easy for her to relate to the kids; what isn’t easy is the thought of facing her own harrowing past.

Millionaire playboy Stephen McKinney could use a little coaching himself. Five years ago he encountered his most horrible nightmare—and the nightmare won. No matter what he achieves, nothing can make up for that awful night . . . or so he believes.

Both desperate for a second chance . . . Stephen is used to getting what he wants. And he wants Hannah. So when she turns him down, he’s intrigued. What he doesn’t know is that her secrets will lead him to a place he never wanted to go again . . . to a side of himself he’s tried to forget . . . a side that would scare Hannah away from ever loving him. Now his only chance to win her trust is to bare his soul, risking everything he tried so hard to protect.

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts So first let me say that I am seriously glad that Claudia Conner put a post on her facebook page saying Stephen was nothing like Matt. Because it is so true. But as different as they are there is something similar about them and that is the way they love with their whole hearts even when they do not know they are loving someone.

I could compare the men over and over. I mean Matt in Worth The Fall is PERFECT! And he really is but Stephen is not and somehow that makes Stephen more real. Matt is the ideal that a woman dreams about but Stephen is the one a real woman would get… a real man with issues and problems and loves and hates.

Stephen and Hannah are both so broken and their lives have been parallel mostly. Stephen lived through his fiancee’ being killed by torture and Hannah was tortured beyond belief. And this is the story of how they move beyond it. I really enjoyed Stephen. Yes he can be off-putting but in a way we understand. But when he shows his love to Hannah and he puts himself out there it is with his whole heart. Something about these McKinney boys take your hearts and hold on.

Now about Hannah. Wow what a woman. She has been through what no woman can imagine going through and deals with it every day. And yet she has figured out how to make the world a better place because of her suffering. She is someone you want to be friends with and yet can see yourself becoming her protector just as much as her brothers are. And speaking of her brothers. I really really really hope that Claudia is considering writing their stories. They are just as attractive and swoon worthy as the McKinney boys so Claudia I am not only hinting I am coming right out and saying we need a Walker Brothers series.

ORDER LINKS:Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The next installment of the Facile Restaurant series of 10 short stories by Jacey Conrad and Gia Corona. Each story focuses on a different couple.

Delia Montgomery is on the worst date in history of dates. The charming, funny version of “Chip” that she met online was an internet mirage, dissolving to leave her with an over-coiffed, raging douche canoe. Chip seems to be following some sort of handbook entitled, “How To Make Your Date Want To Stab You In The Face in Three Easy Steps.” Between the back-handed compliments and “helpful suggestions,” Delia is seriously considering tunneling her way through the floor of Facile with a shrimp fork.

Enter their waiter Byron, who is immediately smitten with the gorgeous victim of an internet date gone awry. Byron is a smooth, well-mannered counterpoint to dating dud Chip, who does not appreciate witnessing the instant chemistry between his date and the server he has no plans to tip. When the date implodes, Bryon is there to provide the special sort of service Delia needs to recover.

REVIEW:
Holy hotness…. It is hard for me to say but I think Delia & Bryon are my new favorite of this series. Although, I think it is safe to say that I love every couple after every story. I just love love love Delia. The crap she has to put up with on her date is sad and funny as hell. Add in on smoking hot waiter and you have a very hot, spicy and fun read.
So can’t wait to see what the ladies have in store for the people at Facile’s.

*EXCERPT*

James stood beside Mac at the window in Mac’s office, watching the head of the domestic relations department escort his newest associate to her car.

“Why isn’t that idiot sneaking in a little kiss here and there?” James asked. “He’s not even touching her. Didn’t offer his arm, hasn’t got his hand on her back.”

“Some of us appreciate a more subtle approach,” Mac said. “Some of us with a little discretion and tact.”

“I about sat her in my lap at lunch earlier this week. She said I was flirting my eyelashes off, and laughed at me.”

“Laughed?” By a little blue Prius, Trent handed Hannah her briefcase. “You have my condolences, James. You must be losing your touch. We depend on you to carry the Knightley standard into the bedroom of western Maryland, but it looks as if at long last – well, one hopes it’s long last-”

“Shut up,” James smacked Mac’s shoulder for good measure. “It’s just as long and lasting as it ever was, but Hannah Stark has been inoculated against my devastating charms by the only thing that has ever protected a female from falling for me.”

“Common sense?” Mac drawled. “A functioning brain? A sense of humor? An accurately calibrated ruler?”

“She’s fallen for him,” James said, gesturing towards the parking lot. “We have reason to hope.”

Jennifer’s Review of A Single Kiss

Review (4.25 Stars): I liked Hannah and Trent as a couple in A Single Kiss because they had so much in common even though they didn’t know that in the very beginning.  Hannah was looking for a job as an attorney to be able to take care of her and her daughter, Grace, and would have taken anything as long as it wasn’t Family Law.  Family Law brought back too many painful memories for her and she only had to get through six months of it and then she would be moved to the Corporate Law department, which is what she desperately wanted.  Hannah was very reserved and wouldn’t let people really get to know her because she wanted to keep her life private.  She didn’t want people to know about her past and she kept people at an arm’s length wherever she went.

Trent was this great guy that had given up on love after his divorce.  He had a daughter to take care of and wanted to do the best job that he could for his clients.  Meeting Hannah and having her work for him made him feel things that he thought were long gone.  He knew that Hannah was hiding things about her personal life and he wanted her to trust him so she would open up to him when she was ready.  I couldn’t imagine a more admirable guy than Trent and he was right there by her side when all her secrets came to light.

This is the first book in the Sweetest Kisses series and it has a lot of potential.  I loved how Trent’s family stood by one another no matter what happened and I’m looking forward to seeing Trent’s brothers get their own happy endings.  The pacing was slow in parts but I didn’t feel that it took too much away from the story and I was glad to see everything wrapped up nicely in the end.  Looking forward to the next title in the series.

Frustration filled Camille Martell when she checked the list of people logged into the “come and get some” chat room, her nickname for the Chicago area dating site Meet ’n’ Greet, where she’d found Angel. The scum wasn’t there now. Obsessed with stopping the sexual predator who’d murdered at least two young women he’d seduced via the Internet, she’d been spending every waking hour away from the job hunting him on her home computer.

“Damn it! C’mon, you bastard, where are you? Show yourself!”

As if her demand zapped him through the ether, his avatar—a dark angel holding a sword—appeared.

“Yes!” Her adrenaline surged, and she quickly logged in as Morrigan, the old college photo identifying her as a twenty-one-year-old redhead. Exactly Angel’s type. He didn’t have a clue she was a cop.

Max nudged her leg and whistled through his nose.

Patting the dog’s big, scruffy body, she absently murmured, “Good boy,” as she tensed watching the parade of messages scroll up her screen.

BigMan: anyone wanna talk with me will show photo

Cougar: let’s see your photo first—not your face, BIG man!

hotgirl: camshows $10/10 minutes skype hotgirl69

Camille’s gaze flicked to the column of sign-ins. Angel was there but not interacting. She’d engaged him twice in the last two days. He’d been flirting carefully with her, like he had been testing her. He knew she was here. What was he waiting for?

She took a big breath. “C’mon, c’mon!”

Unable to wait for it, she took the lead.

Morrigan: Hey, Angel.

Angel: how’s it playing?

Morrigan: Bored ’n’ lonely

Angel: sorry

Morrigan: You can fix

Would he take the bait? Say he wanted to meet? Her pulse fluttered through her as she waited for his reply.

Cougar: woo-wee, angel, she’s comin’ on to ya

Angel: r u, M? what you wanna do with me?

She’d like to do all kinds of nasty things to a lowlife like him, but she’d settle for cuffing him and bringing him in. She thought about saying something sexual, but instinct told her to play it cool.

Morrigan: Just wanna talk . . . to start . . .

BigMan: let’s you ’n’ me talk, honey—skype name?

Morrigan: With Angel only! IM Morrigan22

Camille held her breath as she waited to see if Angel would use it.

Angel: gotta go ttyl

An instant message popped up on her screen, but it was from the guy who called himself BigMan. Camille ignored it. Her hands curled into fists, she sat staring at the monitor, willing Angel to IM her. If he got the mental message, he was ignoring it. Had she played it too cool? Should she have lured him in with the promise of something more than talk?

Another failed attempt. Her adrenaline crashed, deflating her once more.

“Damn it!”

She wanted to punch something.

Max was still sitting there, staring at her, and she realized she hadn’t fed him. Thankfully, she’d hired Sandy Kawecki, the teenage girl who lived next door, to walk Max after school, so he didn’t need to go out right away. She hadn’t meant to have a dog with her busy schedule, but the bruiser had been a pitiful sight on the street barking in terror at anything that went by. That had been barely a month ago. She’d tried to find his owner, and when that had proved impossible, then she’d thought she could find him a good home. He’d found hers instead.

For the last few weeks after getting home from work, she’d gone directly to the computer, since she’d been unable to conduct her search at the office. Each time she wished Angel would IM, but wishing wasn’t going to make it happen, so she pushed away from her desk and headed for the kitchen, the dog following close on her heels.

“Hungry?”

His big brown eyes hopeful, Max whined and licked his chops.

Patting his side, she fetched a can and opened it while considering the irony of her being taken off the Chat Room Predator Case—the reason they gave her was she was “too emotionally focused” on it, and letting other cases slide. But that focus was what had connected her with the presumed killer, though she still hadn’t gotten him to go beyond chatting.

It might take some time, but she would find a way to meet him and arrest him and get him to trial, if it was the last thing she ever did.

Jennifer’s Review of Dangerous

Review (4 Stars):This was a very fast-paced romance that was action-packed from the beginning.  Camille is a cop on the hunt for a sexual predator that is targeting young women in an online chat room.  When her investigation goes too far, she is put on administrative leave and because of her actions, a young neighbor is put in harm’s way. With no one else to turn to, Camille calls on the one man that can help her but is also the one man that she couldn’t forget.  The two of them search for a killer while trying to fight the sexual chemistry that they just can’t deny.

I was so mad at Camille in the beginning of the story because she was so hellbent on catching this killer that she didn’t take precautions to protect a young neighbor from getting caught in the middle of it.  I couldn’t imagine anyone else besides Drago to help her in this situation and he wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty if he needed to.  The sexual chemistry between the two of them lit up the pages and I was at the edge of my seat by the conclusion of this novel.  This is a new author to me but I’m looking forward to reading more from her in the future.

under his touchTITLE: Under His Touch
SERIES #: Falling Under #2
CHARACTERS: Amber & Alec
AUTHOR: Jeffe Kennedy
PUBLICATION DATE: 01/19/15
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Amber Dolors knows better than to get involved with her boss. Devastatingly handsome in his sharp suits and sexy beyond belief, he possesses an air of command that fuels her darkest fantasies. But she’s worked too hard to get this job, and keeping it will lead to a brilliant future. She won’t cross that line—even if his way of giving orders and demanding her best performance gives her delicious warm shivers.

Alexander Knight prides himself on his integrity and self-discipline. After all, he hasn’t risen to the position he enjoys by indulging his whims over ambition. He also isn’t blind. He’s certainly noticed his sharp, young assistant is hot as hell. His self-imposed sexual hermitage doesn’t stop him from watching her. And endlessly fantasizing.

The day Alec’s cool reserve cracks and Amber catches a glimpse of something simmering beneath his apparent indifference is the day everything between them changes. Alec gives her what she’s been looking for sexually—as masterful in the bedroom as he is in the boardroom. He finds himself in the grip of an affair that tests even his boundaries, while Amber’s new role as willing student pushes them both past any consideration other than mutual longing.

REVIEW:
2.5 Hearts Let me start by saying I am usually a fan of what Kennedy has to write but I just couldn’t enjoy this story. First it took almost half of the story for the characters to really get together. There was so much of the back and forth of “we shouldn’t do this”, “I can’t get you out of my head”, “you are my employee”, blah blah blah that I felt the connection lacked by the time they got together. I also had a hard time with the age difference. Not because it was there but because too many time it was reminded he was “old enough to be her father” putting that thought in my head.

Amber is actually too innocent if you ask me and Alec just doesn’t have the Dom attitude, again to my way of thinking. I wish I could say I thought this story had potential but I just don’t. Mind you this will not stop me from picking up the next book by Kennedy in hopes that she has gone back to her usual way of writing.

RAMBLING THOUGHTS ON BEING
AN AUTHOR OF A “COMFORT FOOD “ SERIES
by
CHRISTINE WENGER

First, let me explain that wild title above.  My series for Penguin/Obsidian Books are all cozy mysteries and each one has a comfort food theme.

You might ask, “Hey, Chris, what is COMFORT FOOD? “  Well, dear reader, it is what I’d like to think of is food or sweets that grandma used to make, or mom used to make, or dad always made, or Joe at the diner makes.  It’s your favorite go-to food when you are feeling low and need some comfort.  It’s the way mom makes that sweet potato casserole.  It’s that meatloaf you grew up on.  It’s grandma’s apple pie and now you have the recipe and make it every Thanksgiving for your kids.  And hopefully, one of your kids will make it for their kids.

You might also ask, “Hey, Chris, what’s the setting for your comfort food series?”  Well, dear reader, I picked the perfect setting for my series: a diner!  My character, Trixie Matkowski’s Silver Bullet Diner, located in small town Sandy Harbor, New York, is on the shore of Lake Ontario.

Trixie Matkowski has the same first name as my favorite childhood sleuth, Trixie Belden.  As a kid, you could always find me lying on my bed reading and re-reading Trixie’s adventures. I’d be done with one book, and have the next open so I wouldn’t miss a word.  I’d like to think that Trixie Matkowski is a lot like me.  We have a lot of things in common: love of food and desserts, love of Lake Ontario, small towns, little rental cottages, quirky friends and Polish heritage.

Like Trixie Matkowski, I’ve always been a foodie and love to cook and bake. As for diners, I have my local favorites that have stood the test of time and various owners.  A lot of the old diners, like the Silver Bullet, were fashioned after railroad dining cars.  My grandfather used to work at Onondaga Pottery (which turned into Syracuse China and is now defunct) which made china for various diners, restaurants, and even railroad dining cars.  I have several collectible railroad china pieces, and whenever I use it, I think of where it might have traveled and the dining cars in which it sat.

Friends who have read my books relish in sharing their favorite diners with me.  Oh, the hardship!  Great food and great company.  So, while I should be writing, instead I am eating at various new and old diners.

But my favorite will always be diners like the Silver Bullet, a shiny aluminum establishment from the 1950’s or so, with a grand history and food that comforts.  The smell of coffee permeates the air, and deserts take a ride on a lighted carousel.  The waitresses are friendly and no one rushes you out.

Think of me sitting across from you in a booth with a worn Formica table and red vinyl seats that ergonomically form to my butt.   I’ll be the one eating fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and buttered corn on the side.

“Of course, Nancy, I’d love desert.  I’ll have a cup of thick black coffee with my apple pie.  Definitely, a la mode.  Vanilla ice cream, please!”

Jennifer’s Review of Diners, Drive-ins, and Death

Review (4.25 Stars): Trixie has a lot on her plate in this new mystery with running a busy restaurant, helping her friend open a drive-in movie theater and she has also agreed to host the contestants of the Miss Salmon pageant.  While all this is going on, her friend Antoinette Chloe is trying to figure what happened to her boyfriend, who just up and disappeared on her.  When they find his body on the land where she is going to open her drive-in, Antoinette Chloe becomes the prime suspect in his murder.  Trixie doesn’t believe that her friend is a murderer so she is off to find the real killer before everything goes up in smoke.

This is the third book in the Comfort Food mystery series and this book is action-packed for the get go.  Trixie has way too much going on in her life but that is the way she likes it.  She has wonderful friends, a great business and a sexy potential love interest.  I love how loyal Trixie is to the people that she cares about and is willing to do almost anything to help her good friend, Antoinette Chloe.  After everything they have been through together, Trixie is supportive of Antoinette Chloe when she trying to figure out what happened to her boyfriend, Nick.  Finding Nick on the drive-in property was a shock because no one had a clue how he got there or who was looking to hurt him.  Antoinette Chloe is eccentric with a larger than life personality but that is what I love about her.  The mystery was very intriguing and it was easy to fly through the pages  with Ms. Wenger’s humorous writing style. Diners, Drive-ins, and Death has the perfect mixture of thrills, snappy dialogue and delicious down-home style flavor that will have you asking for seconds.

But when she finds herself compelled across clan borders to a mysterious cliff with a wall of strange etchings, she’s helpless to resist. Somehow, Morvan magically brings forth a stranger seemingly more beast than man, yet despite the inherent dangers, she’s driven to help the handsome Highlander. While his appearance in her life may end up shattering the peace she’s worked so hard to find, he could also prove to be the man of her dreams.

REVIEW:
Another good story from Ms. Grant. The Rouge of Scotland stories are all very short and sweet, therefore my review will be too. I really enjoyed reading about Stefan’s journey and the role he played in the evening that lead to them all being locked away. I really like Morvan. I loved that she is touch and gentle all at the same time.
I am very much looking forward to the final book in this series.

Guest Post for NO GHOULS ALLOWED

The Sandman

I spent a whole lot of my childhood and perhaps more than a bit of my adulthood being afraid of things that go bump in the night.

Like,…terrified to the point of keeping a light on at all times and sleeping on a platform bed lest some spooky entity be able to crawl under it and stab me in my sleep.  (Hello, Jason, a la Friday the 13th.)

Much of this was born of sensitivity to spooks from early childhood.  My first spook sighting in fact was when I was just three years old.

It started one afternoon after we checked into some old hotel in Pennsylvania.  The hotel was well over a hundred and fifty years old and, over breakfast on the way there, my sister had innocently asked why was it that, when she woke up in the mornings, there was sand in her eyes?

My father had replied that every night, to help her sleep, the Sandman came and dropped a little bit of sand there.

It’s funny to me to retell that part of the story, because, in today’s world, I think I’d hesitate telling my six-year-old daughter that every night some guy carrying a sack of sand visited her while she slept.

Anyhoo, my sister, being the logical type, took explanation in stride.  I have only the vaguest memory of that part of the story – mostly because some kind waitress had set down a plate of strawberry covered pancakes topped with a generous portion of whip cream in front of me.  The rest of the day was lost to a sugar coma, I’m sure.

So, that night my parents tucked my sister and me into the king bed in our suite, and headed off through the door to their suite.  Sandy, my sister, lay way across the bed to my left, and I had the spot closest all the way to the right, by the door.  Sands fell asleep immediately.  I was still wound up a little and drifted only into a light doze.

Shortly after my parents wished us goodnight, I heard the sound of a door closing.  It was soft, no more than a click really, but it made me open my eyes and sit up.  There, at the foot of the bed, was a dark silhouette in the shape of a tall man with a stove-piped hat atop his head.

In the dim light of the room, he had no discernable features; he merely stood there at my feet.  Watching me.

Feeling uneasy I rolled over to my sister’s side.  The man at the end of the bed moved along the foot of the bed with me.  I nudged my sister.

“Whaaaaaat?” she moaned.

“Sandy!  There’s a man in here!”

My sister didn’t lift her head from the pillow.  “It’s the Sandman.  Go back to sleep,” she told me.

I lay back down and rolled back to my side.  The Sandman moved with me.

He continued to stand there, watching me for what felt like an eternity.  So I rolled back to my sister’s side, (the Sandman following me), and nudged her again.  “He won’t go away!” whispered.

“Close your eyes and let him put the sand in,” she advised, still not lifting her head from the pillow.

I remember being very frustrated with her.  I didn’t want the creepy dude with the tall hat coming any closer to me.  I didn’t even want him in the room.  Still, if it would make him go away, I figured I’d give it a try.  So off to the other side I went, with the Sandman in tow, and plunked my head down on the pillow, curling myself into the fetal position.  Closing my eyes tightly, I waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Nothing happened.

Sneaking a peak, I looked over my shoulder and the Sandman stood there ominously.  It was like I could sense his mean little eyes boring holes into me.  This time I rolled back over to my sister’s side of the bed and kicked her in the leg.  She sat up angrily and was ready to yell at me when she caught sight of the dark silhouette at the end of the bed and began to scream her head off.

Finally!  A reaction I could get behind!  I began to scream too.

My parents rushed into the room, flipping on the lights as they came, and the Sandman vanished.  Poof!  Just like that.  Gone.

We checked out of the hotel early the next morning after my mother shared more than a few angry words with the hotel staff after one of them admitted they’d given us a room that was reportedly haunted.

Since then I’ve had at least a dozen other such encounters – one that shook me so terribly that I couldn’t drive at night for months afterward.

And I never really got over my fears of the dark until I started writing the Ghost Hunter Mysteries.

Writing has always been my therapy, and I can’t think of a better example than how much it’s helped me to write about the scary encounters that M. J., Gilley, and Heath routinely get themselves into.  There’s just something about creating a super scary scene, which is so vivid for you as a writer that you can feel and see and sense everything that your characters are experiencing, except that, in this case, you have absolute control over the outcome.  It establishes a feeling of confidence, and, after nine books in the series, I’d like to say that I’ve completely overcome my fear of the dark.

I realized just how much when I began writing this particular installment, No Ghouls Allowed and introduced a new spook to the scene.  The Sandman.

Did I still get a little creeped out while writing the book?  Definitely.  But it was a good creeped out.  One I had total control over.

Of course, the quart of ice cream I had on hand as comfort food whilst I wrote the book maaaaay have helped too.  🙂

Jennifer’s Review of No Ghouls Allowed

Review (5 Stars): I absolutely love this series!!!!  I can never get enough of M.J., Heath and Gil and I impatiently count the days until there is a new book in the series.  In No Ghouls Allowed, M.J. returns home to Georgia to spend time with her estranged father and his new fiancée, Christine. While there, they discover that Christine’s home is being renovated and she is having a problem keeping the construction crews from walking off the job. They investigate to see what is happening at the house and what they encounter is a dark, destructive evil that they have never experienced before.

Ms. Laurie does an amazing job keeping this mystery series fresh and exciting and has made me a fan for life.  I loved going back to Georgia with the gang and learning more about M.J.’s life as a child. It helped me see how M.J. has grown as a character and how her past has shaped her to be the wonderful, stubborn and loyal person that she is. I have to say that I would like Christine to be my future step-mom because you can tell that she has a warm accepting personality and she was just the person to bring M.J. and her father closer together.  No Ghouls Allowed is a fun, exciting, ghost-hunting thrill ride that will keep you laughing until the wee hours and now I will have to wait not so patiently until I can meet up with these characters again.
