EXCERPT 1

His eyes became flat and unreadable. “Might I ask why you are walking alone in this forest?” His French was upper crust, well-educated and immaculate. “The closest village outside of Paris is a few hours away. Either you are stupid or you seem to think I am.”

Her brows went up. She knew these well-to-do fils de basts were known for being overly righteous, but she didn’t expect them to live up to their reputation. “Be careful with those insults, monsieur. Back in my village, I can skin a pig in less than thirty minutes. My father is a butcher, and I will warn you, he taught me everything I know. So refrain from annoying me. I have a paring knife.”

A tremor touched his lips as if he were fighting an amusement he didn’t wish to feel. “I have been duly warned.” He skimmed her appearance, including her bare feet and hesitated, lingering on the exposed skin above her breasts her knitted scarf didn’t cover. His jaw tightened. “The tops of your breasts are on full display. Is that intentional?”

Her eyes widened, realizing he had a direct view down her sizable cleavage given he was up on a horse. “Of course not. How dare you look.” Thérèse rearranged her fichu over her décolletage and patted it into place, tucking it into her bodice. “It slipped,” she tossed back. “The wind is a bit strong. Or did you not notice given how fast you were going?”

He puffed out a breath. Leaning back in the leather saddle enough to showcase his broad chest, he adjusted the reins in his large gloved hands. “Seeing you have no shoes, mademoiselle, and that the weather is about to turn dire, I suggest you make haste and go home.”

Thérèse snorted. “Home is the last place I wish to be.” Rather pleased with herself for seizing her own independence, she cradled the basket against her corseted waist, knowing a little advertisement was in order. “My cousin is graciously giving me an opportunity to be part of an upcoming performance he thinks will change all of Paris. I am to be his leading actress in a controversial script he wrote called…The Delights of Life. I will be performing on stage this Friday at Spetacle des Variétés Amusantes. Would you like to hear a few lines and maybe consider coming to a performance? Tickets will be selling for three sols a piece. Quite the bargain.”

His gaze snapped to hers.

Without giving him a chance to decline, she breathlessly announced to her audience of one, “Is it possible for a mere commoner, like myself, to attain a measure of good cheer in a world dominated by men, politics, wealth, murder, intrigue and greed? Most certainly! Under the new Republic, one must simply know how to make these aristocrats in power crawl.” She slapped her derriere and gripped it. “And crawl you shall, o lords of this ravaged land. For I am your new harlot better known as the queen!”

He stared.

She grinned. “You ought to see my rendition of Calderón. I make death look real.” She curtsied and regally held out an open palm with the roll of her bare hand. “Might you offer an aspiring actress a few sols for her journey into stardom? It would be greatly appreciated.”

He lowered his chin. “I only give money to those in need.”

The cheeky bastard. “I am in need. I left the house without a single sol.”

“And how is that my problem?”

She dropped her hand to her side in exasperation. “I was hoping for a sliver of generosity. What else will you have me do? I sing. I dance. I also do a variety of impersonations. The only thing I will not do is bare my breasts or offer up sexual favors. However, if you insist, you may kiss my hand. But not with an open mouth or your tongue. I had a man once lick my hand and I swear I can still feel it.”

An inexplicable look of withdrawal came over his face. “You and I are clearly at an impasse.”

She pointed. “You really ought to work on that comedy routine. You are far too serious in nature.”

He leaned back against his saddle, still staring her down. “What the hell is this? A forest and a show? Are you lost?”

She puffed out a breath. “I dare not say it, but I could be. I have been walking for over two days now following signs that appear to be misplaced. I am trying to get to Paris.” She held up her basket and brightly offered, “I have apples. Might I barter a few in exchange for directions? Or maybe even a ride?” Still smiling, she enthusiastically patted the sleek, soft neck of his horse with one hand, while still holding the basket up. “He is so magnificent. I can barely breathe in his presence.”

He edged his hand away from where she had been patting the horse. “Are you referring to me or the horse?”

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Shadow of a Spout by Amanda Cooper

Why I Write Cozy Mysteries
by Amanda Cooper (aka Victoria Hamilton)

I’ve been reading mysteries for a long, long time (see my bio at the end!). I started with Agatha Christie, and continued with Ngaio Marsh (a new Zealand writer) and Dorothy L. Sayers.  I then moved on to many other mystery writers, among them M. C. Beaton, Donna Andrews, Joan Hess, Mary Daheim, Laura Childs and others.

But I don’t think I really ever had a grasp on what a cozy mystery was until I decided I wanted to write them! I had what I thought was a wonderful premise, wrote the book, worked up a proposal and went looking for agents to replace the agent I had who primarily dealt in romances and cookbooks. The agent of my dreams (aka, my current agent) wrote back and said the premise was interesting, but it didn’t feel cozy to her. I asked what was cozy? She said, read any first mystery in her stable of mystery authors. I did just that.

Aha! I got it. A cozy series often includes a craft, or cooking, and often features cats, and sometimes dogs, though not always. The main character is often (though not always) female. The mystery is what is important, and the investigation takes precedence over everything, but the main character’s personal life will also be explored. That’s one of the things I like about it; I can write about people, not must murder. The skill at characterization I developed writing romances serves me well in writing cozy mysteries.

After all… people are the ultimate mystery. My main characters are generally trying to figure out their life as they figure out mysteries, one clue at a time.

Since beginning in this sub-genre, I have found the absolute best community of writers and readers, those who write and read cozies. They are warm, smart, friendly and kindhearted. Most of them are probably nicer than I am, but I’ll keep trying. As I said to a friend when I discovered all the likeminded cozy readers and writers out there, ‘These are my people!’

And it’s true; they are.

About the Author:

victoria hamilton author pic(1)Amanda Cooper is the pseudonym for bestselling mystery author Victoria Hamilton. She writes the Vintage Kitchen Mysteries and the Merry Muffin Mysteries as Hamilton, in addition to the Teapot Collector Mysteries as Amanda Cooper.

Cooper’s long time love of mystery novels started at age twelve when her mom handed her an Agatha Christie book and said ‘Read!’. Thousands of novels later Cooper is still reading. And writing.

But besides those two favorite pastimes, Cooper also enjoys collecting vintage kitchenalia, old books, teacups, teapots and other ephemera. Perfume is her secret addiction. She likes to cook, hates to clean, and enjoys time spent with friends chatting over wine or tea. She loves crafts, loathes boredom, and her guilty pleasure is ‘reality’ TV, which she knows is largely fake but enjoys anyway.

Cooper thinks that people are the most interesting study of all, and more than anything, she loves to hear from readers, not just about her books but about anything and everything.

Jennifer’s Review of Shadow of a Spout

Review (4 Stars): These characters are such a delight and always seem to make me laugh out loud with the snappy dialogue in this series.  In this mystery, Rose and Laverne are off to the annual convention of the International Teapot Collector’s Society while Sophie is back home running the tea house in their absence.  While there, Zunia Pettigrew, the president of the Teapot Collector’s Society, is found dead with Rose’s teapot next to the body.  Now Rose is being blamed for a crime she didn’t commit and Sophie comes rushing to her side to help track down a killer before it is too late.

This is the second installment in the entertaining Teapot Collector Mystery series and I love the interaction between these lovely ladies.  The mystery was smart, fun and engaging until the very last page.  I loved how Sophie is settling into her life in Gracious Grove and how she is adding her personal touch to the tea house after her negative experiences in New York.  Can’t wait to read more about these characters and looking forward to Ms. Cooper’s next book in the series.

REVIEW: Finishing this book was wonderful, yet sad. I was ecstatic when Delilah announced she was continuing with this series and have enthusiastically awaited each new release. The series has been a phenomenal journey, spanning so many amazing characters and stories. It is with extreme excitement that I began this story, knowing it centered on the sun of this wonderful universe Delilah created – Madame Maitenon! Her story is full of comedy, tragedy and plain ‘ol scandal! I have loved Therese ever since we were first introduced to her in Mistress of Pleasure. She is such a daring, strong character that you can’t help but admire her courage and strength. This story begins over thirty years prior to where the entire series ended up. We get to see Therese as a young girl, getting into all kinds of craziness through her association with a dashing Duke – Gerard Tolbert. Slight spoiler alert – Therese and Gerard meet in the forest. I swear I could have lived this entire story in that forest. Seeing these two characters interact literally exploded the pages of my book. I was so deeply invested in their story I couldn’t put it down. They are extremely funny together, sinfully explicit and wonderfully flawed. So much heartache between these two – so much love. It is a gripping tale that completes the stories of two of our favorite characters in this series. I am very sad that this is the end of The School of Gallantry, but thank goodness for the amazing tales.

That one simple kiss slayed him as nothing in his very, very long life had ever done. It physically hurt him to release her and turn his back on everything she offered, but it was for the best.

A KING WHO WALKS IN DARKNESS

The Rhys who has existed for centuries is gone. Stripped of his ability to shift forms, Rhys can no longer embody the majestic, powerful dragon he was at birth. Cut off from his heritage by one of his own, this Dragon King must remain a man, haunted by demons who torment his every waking moment. The darkness would swallow him whole . . . except a woman so beautiful and haunted becomes the one beam of light in his world…

A DESIRE THAT WILL NOT BE DENIED

Lily Ross is taking the first step in building a new life for herself. Still reeling from a relationship that nearly broke her spirit, Lily is wary of her attraction to brawny, brooding Rhys. The passion burning so brightly between them is a potent temptation, but any entanglement is destined to end in disaster. Yet when a spectre from Lily’s past threatens their growing bond, Rhys is forced to choose with his heart, or lose this woman who has become his one chance at salvation.

REVIEW:
I read Night’s Blaze in four parts here are my thoughts after each part. A full review of all four parts will be posted on the blog during release month.
Review of Part One:
Oh it is good to be back with Ms. Grants Dragons. They are all so snarly and yummy. Where to start with Rhys? Poor guy. I feel so much for him right now. But at the same time I want to slap him silly. Come on Rhys get it together Lily needs you.

As always reading this book in parts is both fun and nerve racking, because I am ready for part two now!!!!

Review of Part Two:
Oh why must it be in four parts… Just when things are getting good. Bam end of part two. I am dying to know what part Henry will play in… well you need to read to find out what I am talking about. Rhys and Lily are so sweet together. But I wish she would just open up to him and tell him her problems.

On to part three……

Review of Part Three:
Talk about leaving me hanging… Authors just love to give readers anxiety. But I guess without a little drama the story would be boring… I could not wait and had the luxury of having part four waiting for me. So off I go.

Review of Part Four:
Oh my goodness more and more anxiety. Man alive I am glad I didn’t have to wait to read the final part of this story. Well we may have gotten a happy ever after I think we were left with a sneak peak into what and who is torturing Rhi. But the ending. OMG NO RHI!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOO.

Overall review.
Another great Dark King story. Although, we are left with a lot of questions about what is going to happen next. Just thinking about it gives me some anxiety. I really enjoyed Rhys and Lily.

Darcy Stone is game for anything—except sexy Navy vet and physical therapist AJ Colten, the guy who’d rejected her when she’d needed him most. Now the shoe is on the other foot and he needs her to play nice and help him secure grants for his patients. Unfortunately Darcy can’t refuse. She needs the money to fund her passion project: rescuing S&R dogs and placing them with emotionally wounded soldiers.

AJ admits it—Darcy is irresistible. But he’s already been battle-scarred by a strong-willed, vivacious, adventurous woman like Darcy, and he’s not making the same mistake twice—until he and Darcy are forced to fake a relationship. Growing closer than they’d ever imagined possible, Darcy and AJ have to ask themselves: how much between them is pretend? What’s the real thing? And where does it go from here?

Excerpt #2

AJ held the door open for Darcy, doing his best to keep his tongue in his mouth, but he wasn’t sure he quite managed.

“Thanks,” she said, brushing up against his arm and shoulder as she stepped into the elevator.

His free hand came out to stabilize her, a purely instinctual move. He didn’t give a thought to the fact that she hated to be helped because he couldn’t give a thought to anything.

Holy. Shit. Hotness.

Her little black dress—emphasis on little—just about killed him.. The bodice was short, snug, and, at first glance, modest.

Second glance, not so much.

She bent over and fiddled with her heels, which had a strap around her ankle and screamed SEX. So did the way the hem of her dress rose up on her thighs, high enough that his eyes nearly popped right out of his head. “What are you doing?” he managed.

“Nothing.” Still bent at the waist, she shifted to her other heel, during which time he pressed his fingers into his eye sockets to keep his eyes in his head.

She was all leg and silken skin and crazy gorgeous hair, and he attempted to steel himself against her but he failed. He’d been wrong, oh so very wrong when he said he’d be able to handle her. He couldn’t, not in her yoga pants, not in a sexy little black dress, not at work, not in his truck, not in an elevator, not in anything anywhere—he couldn’t do it, Sam I Am.

She straightened and sent him a searching look. She’d piled all that long curly hair on top of her head but several silky strands had escaped, brushing her temples and shoulders, giving her a just-got-laid look. Her lips were siren red and he knew it made him a pig, but all he could think about was her mouth and how her lips would looked stretched around his—

“We’re on time still, right?” she asked.

He had to clear his throat to answer. “Yeah.” Jesus.

The door slid shut and silence filled the elevator while they stared at each other. To keep his hands to himself, he backed to the wall.

“So,” she said, looking like she was mentally cracking her knuckles. “What are the rules here? Kiss ass? Sit, shake, and roll over on command? Tell everyone how you saved my life? Obey your every order?”

Her sarcasm helped him roll his tongue back into his mouth. “I will ask you to kiss someone’s ass never,” he said. “Same for sit and shake and roll over. And you know damn well I didn’t save your life. But as for the obeying me? That. Lots of that would be great.”

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Love is a dare in the sexy new romance by the award-winning New York Times bestselling author of the Animal Magnetism novels and the Lucky Harbor series…

KELLY’S REVIEW:
4 Stars Darcy has lived by the motto of don’t love and you won’t get hurt. But after her accident Darcy is starting to learn that she does need people to lean on. Just as long as it is not the hunky AJ that leaves her all twitterpated.

AJ has loved hard and lost hard. He doesn’t know if he has it in him to do it again. But with Darcy it is just so darn easy. Well Darcy herself is not easy. Oh no, she is a challenge inside a challenge inside a tightly sealed box. But AJ is a patient man.

As always Ms. Shalvis writes a story that tugs at my heartstrings. I really loved this story. When I got to the part with Raisin (she’s a dog) there were tears. I have a soft spot for sweet little doggies like Raisin. Loved AJ and Darcy. It was so much fun to watch these two dance circles around each other.

I can’t wait to see who is next in this series.

JENNIFER’S REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts Darcy spent most of her life traveling the globe, running from the pain of her past and writing travel articles for magazines. Then one day, a horrible car accident changed all that and left Darcy with emotional and physical scars. A.J. has helped Darcy get her life back by working with her every week for months as her physical therapist and helped her find her true passion in life. Saving Search and Rescue dogs when they no longer able to work for S&R and transitioning them to become therapy companions for wounded soldiers. A.J. has always cared for Darcy but has never let her see his true feelings for her until they are forced to spend time together to help A.J. secure a grant so he can continue providing therapy for patients who desperately need it after their insurance benefits have run out. They both discover that faking a relationship is too easy when true feelings are involved and they both may discover that they have a future together if they just can take a leap of faith.

Darcy had built this wall around her emotionally to protect herself from getting involved with anyone and the only person able to break through it was A.J. Her parents never seemed to care for her while growing up so relationships were just fun and games as long as there were no real feelings involved. She was used to traveling the world and never staying at any one place for too long so being in Sunshine for her therapy had changed her in ways she never planned on. She had a home, friends and family and finally a real purpose in life that would help others who experienced what she had. She needed someone to look past the scars and the wall that she had built around herself and love the stubborn, spunky woman that she truly was.

A.J. was a great guy. He helped so many people in his career as a physical therapist and continued to help them even if their insurance was no longer paying for it because it was what they needed to get better. He was just as hard-headed as Darcy was and there were times that I wanted to smack both of these characters because they had love right in front of them. They just had to reach out and grab it, but they were both too stubborn to do it. A.J. knew exactly what Darcy went through with her accident and was afraid to love her due to a previous relationship ending badly. Once they were able to get over the pain of their past they were able to see that sometimes love isn’t always perfect but definitely worth the risk.

This is the sixth book in the Animal Magnetism series and I’m always impressed by the wonderful love stories that Ms. Shalvis creates with each new book that she writes. I’m looking forward to reading her next book coming out later this year.

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
4 Stars
I am not sure I have ever read a book from Jill Shalvis that I have not enjoyed and that didn’t make me want to grab the next one in the series. And this was no different.

AJ is so sweet. The strong silent type. Afraid of getting his heart broken and yet is a good guy who deserves to feel the love of a good woman. And Darcy is a crack up. She has been through more than most and yet tries to hold her head high. And then there is Raisin… Oh goodness!

And be forewarned have a bag of gummy bears when you start reading. If you don’t have some you will be heading to the store to get some.

Finding a Book Club that Fits

by Laura DiSilverio

Up front confession: I do not currently belong to a book club, even though I’ve just launched a series about the five women who make up the Readaholics book club.

Over the stifled gasps, I add: I would like to, but with two teens still at home, I have not carved out the time to join one or start one. [Embarrassed pause.]  Okay, that’s weak. We make time for the things that are important to us, right? I mean, I make it to the gym 3-4 times a week, and to Bible study every other week, so if I were serious about wanting to join a book club, I would. After all, CEOs and government ministers and stay-at-home moms with six kids find time (and babysitters) and get to their once a month book club meetings.

Book Club Types

I’ve gotten as far as debating what kind of club I would like to join. One that reads best-sellers? One that reads classics? A club that mixes it up with fiction one month and non-fiction the next? One that has husbands and wives, or one that’s all women? One that spends ten minutes discussing the book du jour and an hour catching up with friends and noshing? Or a club that huddles around a facilitator with a long list of prepared questions?

I divide most book clubs into two groups: social and serious. There’s usually a lot of wine or margaritas at a social book club, and furrowed brows and note-taking at the serious ones. As a writer, I’ve talked to clubs of both kinds and enjoyed them both. I get all my best what-to-read-next recommendations from book clubs.
Reading Like a Writer

I think part of my inertia is because I haven’t ever been part of a book club that wants to look at books the way I do, as a writer. Francine Prose wrote a book called Reading Like a Writer some years back, and I think she’d be great to have in a book club. Yeah, it can be interesting to argue about the social issues raised in a book, and ask “What would I do in such-and-such a situation?” But I want to dissect how an author makes a character sympathetic, or how she raises the tension in a particular scene, or why he chose a particular setting. Few of my friends and neighbors want to take a book apart that way. That’s not a slam on them–they’re not writers.

I’m sure a movie director would have a similar experience watching movies with non-industry friends. Her buddies might be gushing about the moral dilemma portrayed in the film, while the director says, “Did you notice how that shot was framed, or that transition, or the lighting?”

Resolved

While writing this post, I’ve come to the conclusion that I really do want to be part of a book club. If I start a book club that spends at least part of every meeting looking at how the author wrote the book (and part of each session quaffing wine, chatting and arguing about the book’s content), will any of you join me? We’ll have to call ourselves the Readaholics, of course.

In the comments, please recommend a book for us to start with!

P.S.:  If you don’t live close enough to Colorado Springs to make it to meetings, why not check out the Readaholics and the Falcon Fiasco to see what they’re reading?

About the Author:

DiSilverio1-466x700My life began, from a writing perspective, when I went to college. That’s not to say I didn’t write stories before then. I did. I’ve always written and, in my elementary years, illustrated stories. My tales always featured horses and princesses I could render with flowing manes of hair. Anyway, when I say my writing life didn’t begin until college, that’s because my home life was so overwhelmingly normal and angst-free: no family divorces, no abuse, no felons, no deaths, no drugs or alcohol, no shop-lifting or sex parties to win peer approval. (Have you heard what 12-year-olds are up to today? I shudder.) My father was an Air Force pilot and we moved a lot, living in Georgia, Texas, Washington, the Philippines, and Oklahoma before I was out of high-school, but I liked the peripatetic lifestyle.

I wrote my first novel for a creative writing class at Trinity University. Professor Bob Flynn inspired me and heroically refrained from gagging when reading the contemporary romance I titled “Jeweled Torment.” That manuscript is buried in a box in the garage, along with the Regency romance I wrote shortly after joining the Air Force. I concentrated on becoming a good intelligence officer for many years before doing any more significant writing. I served with an F-16 wing in Korea, helped resolve reports of live-sightings of Vietnam prisoners of war while working out of the embassy in Bangkok, pushed paper at the Defense Intelligence Agency, earned my Master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania, taught English for three years at the Air Force Academy, learned cool things about satellites (none of which I can ever write about) at the National Reconnaissance Office, attended various professional schools, did my time in the Pentagon, commanded a squadron in England, and ended up in Colorado. Along the way, I married my wonderful husband and produced two beautiful children who re-defined what is important in life. A moment of Holy Spirit-guided epiphany in Elliot’s Bay bookstore in Seattle convinced me it was time to embark on writing and mothering full time. I retired from the Air Force in late 2004.

My motto? Never, never, never, give up. I’m also fond of the saying that sits on my desk beneath a photo of a sailboat on the sea: “You cannot discover new worlds unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

One of those new worlds included the privilege of serving on the Sisters in Crime Board, for which I am now their immediate Past President.

I discover more new worlds all the time in my writing and I give thanks every day for being able to pursue my passion.

Jennifer’s Review of The Readaholics and the Falcon Fiasco

Review (4.5 Stars): This was a great start to a new cozy series and I loved that the mystery revolved around a bookclub comprised of women that loved mysteries.  Amy-Faye was sweet, spunky and I love the humor that was laced throughout this mystery.  The secondary characters in this story are a real treat and I believe that The Readaholics and The Falcon Falso is a definite winner.  I haven’t read any of Ms. DiSilverio’s other mystery series but that will definitely change since I enjoyed this one so much.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is a short novella in the Guardians of Eternity series. Kata has been a prisoner and vampire Uriel is her escape. There is something very interesting about the two together. They are enjoyable and the story was over way too quickly.

Just a small part of a wonderful series that any fan of paranormal will enjoy.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Four Nights With A Duke by Eloisa James

Four Nights_Banner

Four Nights

As a young girl, Emilia Gwendolyn Carrington told the annoying future Duke of Pindar that she would marry any man in the world before him-so years later she is horrified to realize that she has nowhere else to turn.

Evander Septimus Brody has his own reasons for agreeing to Mia’s audacious proposal, but there’s one thing he won’t give his inconvenient wife: himself.

Instead, he offers Mia a devil’s bargain… he will spend four nights a year with her. Four nights, and nothing more. And those only when she begs for them.

Which Mia will never do.

Now Vander faces the most crucial challenge of his life: he must seduce his own wife in order to win her heart-and no matter what it takes, this is the one battle he can’t afford to lose.

Before she could think better of it, she took a deep breath, handed her pelisse to the butler, and marched past him into the morning room. Mia had spent a good deal of time in the ducal country estate as a young girl, given the late duchess’ decades-long affaire with her father, and she knew where she was headed.

Even though the principal players in that drama—her father and Vander’s mother—had passed away, it seemed nothing had changed at Rutherford Park. Every horizontal surface was still crowded with animal figurines, evidence of the late duchess’ fascination with small creatures.

She turned to the butler. “Please let His Grace know that my call shall be quite brief.”

“I shall ascertain whether His Grace is receiving,” he said, and left.

Surely Vander would see her? How could he deny her, given their parents’ relationship? Commonsense reminded her that he might well deny her for that precise reason.

She wandered over to look at the glass menagerie that resided on the mantelpiece. The unicorn had lost his horn, but all the animals were still there, silently poised with a paw up or a tail waving—some with little animal families, as though they had paired off and multiplied while the house slept.

But she couldn’t concentrate on the little curl of glass, a tadpole, she picked up. The thought of what lay ahead of her—the marriage proposal—made her feel dizzy, as if her corset was constricting her chest and making it hard to breathe. Years before, when she’d vowed to Vander’s face never to marry him, a gleam of amusement had sprung to his eyes.

What if he burst out laughing now?

She was not exquisitely beautiful, artistic, intelligent…and she didn’t even have a fortune. Who ever heard of a wallflower asking a duke for his hand in marriage?

Mia took another deep breath. She wasn’t precisely asking the duke to marry her. That would be pitiful. She was blackmailing him, which was altogether different.

More swashbuckling. More perilous.

More criminal.

She should pretend this wasn’t happening to her, but to one of her heroines, the way she did with almost everything else. She already had plenty of practice observing her life as if from outside. She regularly chatted with patently bored gentlemen, simultaneously rewriting the conversation in such a way that a fantastically idealized version of herself left them dumbstruck with desire.

Back home she would jot down the scene precisely as she had reimagined it—giving herself violet eyes and a slim waist. Sometimes she stayed up all night describing the adventures of one of her heroines, a girl so well-mannered, biddable, and pure of heart that only the most discerning readers noticed she was quite intelligent under her sweet smiles.

In contrast, men noticed that Mia was intelligent, but seemed to put them off.

If life imitated one of her novels, Vander would stride into the room and after one glance begin wooing her with such passion that the distasteful question of blackmail would never need be mentioned.

His blue eyes would flare with possessive fervor. For the rest of his life, His Grace would regret thirteen years he might have spent with her, but had lost due to his callow and callous blindness as a boy. He would bitterly reproach himself for his cruelty unkind insults.

Frankly, that was more than unlikely, frankly. In her experience, people never regretted clever insults. She hated cabbage to this day. As well as Oakenrott.

Jennifer’s Review of Four Nights With A Duke

Review (4 Stars): I loved Four Nights With A Duke and was absolutely enchanted with Mia and Vander’s love story.  These two characters didn’t seem as though they would fit well together after experiencing a humiliating encounter with Vander and his friends when Mia was a teenager that made her vow that she would never marry Vander even if he was the last man in England. So it is a shock to Vander when Mia shows up on his front door with a proposition for him to marry her or else lose everything that he holds dear.  He agrees to marry her on one condition, she can only have four nights with him a year unless she begs him for more.  Mia will never beg for his attention but Vander finds himself falling for her and will do anything to win her affection.

I instantly connected with Mia because she was sweet, kind and was a writer which was unheard of for women at her time.  She did the one thing that she swore she would never do to save her family from being torn apart by her evil uncle.  Propose marriage to Vander because his title and position is the only thing that can protect her family from her uncle.  Mia can be stubborn sometimes but she goes after what she wants no matter what and I admired her determination to get Vander to agree to marriage.

I didn’t like Vander at all in the beginning because he came across as an arrogant jerk.  The way he treated Mia in the beginning was horrible and I was surprised that Mia had even thought to bring this proposition to him.  Yet Vander slowly grew on me over the course of the book and the way he treated Mia’s nephew, Charlie, definitely redeemed him in my eyes.

This is the eighth book in the Desperate Duchesses series and each love story keeps getting better and better. Ms. James is one of my favorite historical romance authors at the moment and I am always excited to see what she comes up with next.

Jennifer’s Review of Buy A Whisker

Review (4 Stars): Readers are in for a real treat with Buy A Whisker.  Sarah finds herself in the middle of a community dispute over whether the waterfront should be developed and help bring more tourists to the lovely town of North Harbor.  Everyone in town seems to be for the proposed plan except local baker, Lily Carter and she refuses to sell her business for the waterfront development.  Soon, Lily is found murdered in her bakery and now Sarah and her trusty feline sidekick, Elvis, must find a killer before they decide to take another victim to get keep this project going.

I love little Elvis and he can tell when people are lying which has come in handy in helping Sarah find a killer in the past.  This cat is so adorable and has definitely become one of my favorite characters in the series.  Buy A Whisker is a cute, charming mystery that will have you wanting to spend more time with this spunky crime-fighting duo.  The mystery was intriguing with several plot twists and the right amount of humor to make the pages just fly by.  Looking forward to reading the next mystery, A Whisker of Trouble, which is due out next year.

Chelsea knows Bash isn’t the right guy for her—he barely meets one of her criteria—but there’s something about the charismatic man that has her yearning for things that are most definitely not list approved.

Because sometimes, a relationship that looks totally wrong on paper can turn out incredibly right

REVIEW:
Bash is the anti-love, I have been burned before guy who is not looking for anything permanent. Except he has the major hots for the fiery redhead Chelsea.
Chelsea is looking for Mr. Perfect. Oh yes, Mr. Perfect she even has a list of all the qualities that her next man needs to have. But what Chelsea never planned on was Bash.

Love After All is another great story from Ms. Burton. I loved Bash and Chelsea. I loved Chelsea’s list. I even loved when Bash totally steps in it and messes everything up. I just loved this book. I truly enjoy every journey that Ms. Burton has taken me on every time we visit Hope, Oklahoma.
