Kelly reviews Six Years by Harlan Coben

six yearsTITLE: Six Years
CHARACTERS: Jake Fisher
AUTHOR: Harlan Coben
PUBLICATION DATE: March 19, 2013
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Harlan Coben, the master of domestic suspense, returns with a standalone thriller in the vein of #1 bestsellers Hold Tight, Caught and Stay Close that explores the depth and passion of a lost love . . . and the secrets and lies at its heart.
Six years have passed since Jake Fisher watched Natalie, the love of his life, marry another man. Six years of hiding a broken heart by throwing himself into his career as a college professor. Six years of keeping his promise to leave Natalie alone, and six years of tortured dreams of her life with her new husband, Todd. But six years haven’t come close to extinguishing his feelings, and when Jake comes across Todd’s obituary, he can’t keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd’s wife he’s hoping for . . . but she is not Natalie.
Whoever the mourning widow is, she’s been married to Todd for more than a decade, and with that fact everything Jake thought he knew about the best time of his life—a time he has never gotten over—is turned completely inside out. As Jake searches for the truth, his picture-perfect memories of Natalie begin to unravel. Mutual friends of the couple either can’t be found or don’t remember Jake. No one has seen Natalie in years. Jake’s search for the woman who broke his heart—and who lied to him—soon puts his very life at risk as it dawns on him that the man he has become may be based on carefully constructed fiction.
Harlan Coben once again delivers a shocking page-turner that deftly explores the power of past love and the secrets and lies that such love can hide.

REVIEW:
What just happened….. That is pretty much what I felt the whole way through this book. There is so much that goes on and so much to process, but I never felt lost. I did enjoy Jake’s journey to find his lost love. But honestly after the first time someone tried to kill me I think I would have quit. Jake is one determined man. He may be a little stupid but he is determine.
This was my first Harlan Coben book and I can see why so many people enjoy his stories. He has a way of sucking you into the events on the page and makes you stay up to late reading to solve the mystery. I am really sad that I waited so long to read this story. But happy that I finally did. I am looking forward to reading another of Mr. Coben’s stories soon.

In a compelling, richly researched novel that draws from thousands of letters and original sources, bestselling authors Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie tell the fascinating, untold story of Thomas Jefferson’s eldest daughter, Martha “Patsy” Jefferson Randolph—a woman who kept the secrets of our most enigmatic founding father and shaped an American legacy.

From her earliest days, Patsy Jefferson knows that though her father loves his family dearly, his devotion to his country runs deeper still. As Thomas Jefferson’s oldest daughter, she becomes his helpmate, protector, and constant companion in the wake of her mother’s death, traveling with him when he becomes American minister to France.

It is in Paris, at the glittering court and among the first tumultuous days of revolution, that fifteen-year-old Patsy learns about her father’s troubling liaison with Sally Hemings, a slave girl her own age. Meanwhile, Patsy has fallen in love—with her father’s protégé William Short, a staunch abolitionist and ambitious diplomat. Torn between love, principles, and the bonds of family, Patsy questions whether she can choose a life as William’s wife and still be a devoted daughter.

Her choice will follow her in the years to come, to Virginia farmland, Monticello, and even the White House. And as scandal, tragedy, and poverty threaten her family, Patsy must decide how much she will sacrifice to protect her father’s reputation, in the process defining not just his political legacy, but that of the nation he founded.

Excerpt:

It was my haste that made me stumble halfway down the stairs. Only a wild, wrenching grasp at the carved wooden rail saved me from a broken neck. Alas, the heavy fall of my feet echoed up the staircase and drew my father from his rooms.

“Patsy?” he called, peering over the bannister.

I froze, breathless, my belly roiling with shock and anger and revulsion. I ought to have pretended that I didn’t hear him say my name. I ought to have hurried on, leaving him with only the sight of my back. I ought never to have looked up at him over my shoulder.

But I did look up.

There on the landing my father loomed tall, a tendril of his ginger hair having come loose from its ribbon, his shirt worn without its neck cloth, the stark white linen setting off more vividly the red flush that crept up his throat. Was it shame for his behavior with Sally or . . . ardor?

On the heels of giving witness to his behavior, the thought was so excruciatingly horrifying that heat swept over me, leaving me to wish I’d burn away to dust.

“Are you hurt?” Papa asked, hoarsely.

I couldn’t reply, my mouth too filled with the bitter taste of bile. Finally, I forced a shake of my head.

He glanced back to the door, then back at me, his hand half-covering his mouth. “Were—were you at my door just now?”

“No,” I whispered, as much as I could manage under my suffocating breathlessness. And how dare he ask if I’d been at his door when neither of us could bear the honest answer? Even if Papa didn’t know what I’d seen, he knew what he’d done.

He ought to have been downstairs with us, reacquainting himself with the little daughter who still didn’t remember him. He ought to have been sipping cider with the young man who fancied me, giving his permission to court. He ought to have been doing a hundred other things. Instead, he was preying upon my dead mother’s enslaved half-sister—and the wrongness of it filled my voice with a defiant rage.

“No, I wasn’t at your door.” I held his gaze, letting him see what he would.

My father paused on the precipice, clearing his throat, absently smearing the corner of his lips with one thumb. “Well—well. . .did you need something?” As if my needs were at the forefront of his thoughts.

My fingers curled into fists as a lie came to me suddenly, and sullenly. “I was coming up to fetch my prayer book.” Surely he knew it was a lie, but I didn’t care. If he challenged me, I’d lie again, without even the decency of dropping my eyes. I’d lie because between a father and a daughter, what I’d witnessed was unspeakable. And I’d learned from the man who responded with silence to my letters about politics or adultery or the liberation of slaves. . . .

Papa never spoke on any subject he didn’t want to.

Neither would I.

“Are you certain you weren’t hurt,” Papa finally murmured, “ . . . on the stairs?”

Rage burned inside me so hotly I thought it possible that my handprint might be seared upon the railing. I bobbed my head, grasped my skirt, and took two steps down before my father called to me again.

“Patsy?”

I couldn’t face him, so I merely stopped, my chest heaving with the effort to restrain myself from taking flight. “What?”

A heavy silence descended. One filled with pregnant emotion. I feared he might be so unwise as to attempt to explain himself, to justify or confess his villainous lapse in judgment, but when he finally spoke, it was only to ask, “What of your prayer book?”

Swallowing hard, I forced words out despite the pain. “I’ve reconsidered my need of it. I’m not as apt as some people to forget what it says.”

Advanced Praise for America’s First Daughter:

“Painstakingly researched, beautifully hewn, compulsively readable — this enlightening literary journey takes us from Monticello to revolutionary Paris to the Jefferson White House, revealing remarkable historical details, dark family secrets, and bringing to life the colorful cast of characters who conceived of our new nation. Kelly reviews Alice In Zombieland by Gena Showalter

alice in zombielandTITLE: Alice in Zombieland
SERIES #: White Rabbit Chronicles #1
CHARACTERS: Alice Bell & Cole Holland
AUTHOR: Gena Showalter
NARRATOR: Natalie Gold
RUN TIME: 13 Hours & 6 Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: October 12, 2012
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | Audible | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real.

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies

REVIEW:
I am ashamed to admit that I have been eyeing this series since it came out in 2012 and I am just now getting to read (listening to) it. Please don’t ask my way I waited to so long. All I got is that I get to read (listen to) all four books in a row (see there was a method behind my madness).
Where to begin? Where to begin? Alice Bell has always thought that her dad was just crazy. Seeing monsters in the dark. Being afraid of the dark. And teaching Alice how to fight. But what Alice didn’t know was that her life was forever going to change and she is about to learn that everything her father saw and believed is true.
I don’t want to give you more then that. You need to discover the truth for yourself. I loved Alice. She is feisty, determined, loyal and about to change the world. I can’t wait to see what happens next to her. Cole Holland. How to tell you about Cole. Think one badass, zombie-killing, dark, serious, determine and totally and utterly in love with Alice. So Cole is pretty much awesome!!!!! I am a little scared to see what Ms. Showalter makes Alice and Cole go through, but I trust it will all work out.
Let’s talk Kat. No not a meow, meow kitty. Kat, Alice’s new best friend. I want a Kat that will follow me around and tell me how awesome she is and how lucky I am to have her as a friend. Kat is just awesome. She lended so much comic relief to this story. Oh and her love story with Frosty is sweet and firey!!!!!
I really can’t wait to get started on book to Through the Zombie Glass!!!!
Ms. Gold does a really nice job bring Ms. Showalter’s words to life. I enjoyed listening to her tell me this story. My only issue is that there was not enough differentially between the male voices and the female voices.

Kelly reviews The Passenger by Lisa Lutz

passengerTITLE: The Passenger
CHARACTERS: Tanya Dubois
AUTHOR: Lisa Lutz
PUBLICATION DATE: March 1, 2016
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
From the author of the New York Times bestselling Spellman Files series, Lisa Lutz’s latest blistering thriller is about a woman who creates and sheds new identities as she crisscrosses the country to escape her past: you’ll want to buckle up for the ride!

In case you were wondering, I didn’t do it. I didn’t have anything to do with Frank’s death. I don’t have an alibi, so you’ll have to take my word for it…

Forty-eight hours after leaving her husband’s body at the base of the stairs, Tanya Dubois cashes in her credit cards, dyes her hair brown, demands a new name from a shadowy voice over the phone, and flees town. It’s not the first time.

She meets Blue, a female bartender who recognizes the hunted look in a fugitive’s eyes and offers her a place to stay. With dwindling choices, Tanya-now-Amelia accepts. An uneasy―and dangerous―alliance is born.

It’s almost impossible to live off the grid today, but Amelia-now-Debra and Blue have the courage, the ingenuity, and the desperation, to try. Hopscotching from city to city, Debra especially is chased by a very dark secret…can she outrun her past?

With heart-stopping escapes and devious deceptions, The Passenger is an amazing psychological thriller about defining yourself while you pursue your path to survival. One thing is certain: the ride will leave you breathless.

REVIEW:
Can I just say WOW? Okay then, WOW!!!! What a crazy and wild story. This was my first Lisa Lutz story and it was amazing. The journey that we go on with Tanya Dubois is a one filled with so many twists and turns. As I kept turning the pages I was not sure what was going to be next for Tanya. I was shocked by many things in this story. Blue for example was amazing, a little scary (okay a lot scary) but I loved this character. And of Dominic, loved him!!! I wanted more of him, but this was Tanya’s journey. I don’t want to tell you to much because that would ruin the journey for you. But know this, this was a great story of a girl trying to figure out just who she really is. And the ending left my jaw on the ground.
Seriously, You need to pick up this book!!!!

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Another good installment in Ms. Reus’ Deadly Ops series. I am not sure that this has been my favorite book to date. But I really enjoyed Nathan and Amelia story.
I really enjoyed that A Covert Affair was a second chance romance story for Nathan. We have seen Nathan many time over the last four books. It was great to finally get a closer look at him. Amelia is great. She is tough and determined to be and do better in life. Which she has, but when Nathan walks back into her life things start to go south.
I am looking forward to what is next in this series.

a midnight danceTITLE: A Midnight Dance
SERIES #: Fiery Tales #3
CHARACTERS: Jules deMoutier & Sabine Laurent
AUTHOR: Lila DiPasqua
PUBLICATION DATE: August 2, 2011
ORDER LINKS: Amazon

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Inspired by the tale of Cinderella, Lila DiPasqua weaves a steamy historical romance that offers a glass slipper, a dangerous deception, and an impoverished beauty determined to find her handsome prince…and make him pay.

Born into wealth, Sabine Laurent and her twin sister lived a life of luxury, their father’s prestigious theater frequented by royalty and aristocracy alike. And Sabine dreamed of her own prince charming—the devastatingly handsome Jules de Moutier.

That was before the loss of her sister and her family’s fall from grace—a disaster Sabine blames on the Moutier family. Now, with her father’s death, she’s inherited his sizable debt and the responsibility of caring for his spoiled long-time mistress and her two wastrel daughters. But with the help of Sabine’s eccentric friends—the balance of her father’s acting troupe—she plans to get very close to her old infatuation, seduce the rake—and make away with a fortune.

Resisting Jules’s skillful mouth and tantalizing touch is not as easy as Sabine supposed. And soon she must decide whether her desire for vengeance is greater than her desire for her one and only prince

REVIEW:
In A Midnight Dance we meet Sabine Laurent, who is in dire straits. Sabine is a woman on a mission to save her family. But in order to do that she must be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to gain the trust of those she plans to deceive. But as with all good plans not all goes right. The last person Sabine ever expected to find in this camp is the one man she blames for the fall of her family. Jules deMoutier.

Jules deMoutier has been stripped of everything, his money, his title, and his pride. But after 5 long years he is so close to getting everything back. Back to the way his life should be. But Jules never planned for one small blond woman to come into his camp and steal his treasure out from under his nose.

Sabine is a great heroine. She is smart, funny, determined and really doesn’t take people’s crap very well. Her only weakness seems to be her heart. Sabine cares too much sometimes.
Jules, aahhh, sweet, handsome, suborn, wouldn’t know when a woman is lying to him Jules.. Jules is HOT… He his Dream…. He really is a prince charming under all that holier than thou attitude.
OH, Lila is wicked good. There was not one moment that I didn’t love this story. Lila doesn’t wait very long for there to be a very hot forest sex scene *wiggle eyebrows* Lila does a great job of taking the Cinderella story and telling it in a way I would have never thought about. This is truly a riches to rags to riches story.

Kimberly reviews The Friends We Keep by Susan Mallery

Friends we keepTITLE: The Friends We Keep
SERIES #: Mischief Bay #2
CHARACTERS: Gabby, Hayley & Nicole
AUTHOR: Susan Mallery
PUBLICATION DATE: 02/23/16
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In this insightful and compelling story from book club favorite Susan Mallery, three close friends test the boundaries of how much a woman can give before she has nothing left

After five years as a stay-at-home mom, Gabby Schaefer can’t wait to return to work. Oh, to use the bathroom in peace! No twins clamoring at the door, no husband barging in, no stepdaughter throwing a tantrum. But when her plans are derailed by some shocking news and her husband’s crushing expectations, Gabby must fight for the right to have a life of her own.

Getting pregnant is easy for Hayley Batchelor. Staying pregnant is the hard part. Her husband is worried about the expensive fertility treatments and frantic about the threat to her health. But to Hayley, a woman who was born to be a mom should risk everything to fulfill her destiny—no matter how high the cost.

Nicole Lord is still shell-shocked by a divorce that wasn’t as painful as it should’ve been. Other than the son they share, her ex-husband left barely a ripple in her life. A great new guy tempts her to believe maybe the second time’s the charm…but how can she trust herself to recognize true love?

As their bonds of friendship deepen against the beautiful backdrop of Mischief Bay, Gabby, Hayley and Nicole will rely on good food, good wine and especially each other to navigate life’s toughest changes.

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts This is the second in the Mischief Bay but you do not need to read that one first to read this. I love Mallery’s work. The Fool’s Gold series is one of my favorite series of all time. But every year Mallery throws in one book from another series and while I enjoy them they just aren’t the same as the FG series.

These books are not as light hearted and easy as the FG series. There is more to these. There is a moral to these stories for lack of a better word. There is more life to these stories… More reality. The characters from Mischief Bay have a lot going on. First there is Gabby. Gabby is just ready to go back to work after her twins start school. Heck she is just ready to go to the bathroom alone without interruption which any mom understands. But her husband, step-daughter and his ex just seem to add so much drama in her life that I have to say I wondered why she wanted to be there. Her hubby is wrong for the way she is treated versus the way the daughter is treated and I really just wanted to slap him.

Then there is Nicole. Really I didn’t like her at first. She had a preconceived notion of her son’s favorite author and I was just bored with this part of the story. Yes we end up with HEA of course but it is pretty predictable.

And finally there is Hayley. This was a hard part of the story for me. Having gone through fertility treatments I got it. I understand her want of a child but to risk her life for one was just idiotic and I wanted to slap her as well. Again it works out. Hayley hits rock bottom and starts to rise again with a new lease on life but in the meantime she was so desperate that I had a hard time.

Now after all of this I want to say I enjoyed the story. I love anything that Mallery writes but I am glad to get back to Fool’s Gold and visit with the town I love.

Alice In Wonderland Heels Wedding Heels Wedding Shoes Classic Literature Heels Literature Shoes Something Blue John Tenniel Lewis Carroll
Made-To-Order: Alice In Wonderland Black-And-White Heels. The heels are artfully covered with an arrangement of classic Tenniel illustrations. They are trimmed with a light blue ruched ribbon, which is then overlaid with a second narrow black ribbon. The ribbon meets with an offset, small black bow. Peeping from the bow on each shoe is a silver-toned Wonderland themed charm. The charm on each shoe is different, and will be unique to each pair of shoes. Brides, if you are looking for the perfect “something blue” ~ these shoes would be a lovely finishing touch for your special day. (If you would like your names and wedding date scripted on the sole, I’ll be happy to provide that service for no additional charge.) Due to the hand-made nature of my items, irregularities do occur at times and can be welcomed as part of the creative process. Purchase of this item constitutes your agreement to abide by my shop policies.
***IMPORTANT NOTICE: The blue velvety ribbon pictured is discontinued. All further orders will be made with a more translucent light blue ribbon as per the 2nd listing photo. Please ask any questions concerning this before purchase. No refunds or remakes will be offered for failure to read the listing details and view the photographs.
