Kimberly reviews The Forgotten Room by Lincoln Child

forgotten roomTITLE: The Forgotten Room
SERIES #: Jeremy Logan #3
CHARACTERS: Jeremy Logan
AUTHOR: Lincoln Child
PUBLICATION DATE: 05/12/15
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
New York Times bestseller Lincoln Child returns with a riveting new thriller featuring the charismatic and quirky Professor Jeremy Logan (The Third Gate, Deep Storm), renowned investigator of the strange and the inexplicable, as he uncovers a long-lost secret experiment only rumored to have existed.
Jeremy Logan is an “enigmalogist”—an investigator who specializes in analyzing phenomena that have no obvious explanation. In this newest novel Logan finds himself on the storied coastline of Newport, Rhode Island, where he has been retained by Lux, one of the oldest and most respected think tanks in America. Just days earlier, a series of frightening events took place in the sprawling seaside mansion that houses the organization. One of its most distinguished doctors began acting erratically—violently attacking an assistant in the mansion’s opulent library and, moments later, killing himself in a truly shocking fashion. Terrified by the incident and the bizarre evidence left behind, the group hires Logan to investigate—discreetly—what drove this erudite man to madness.
His work leads him to an unexpected find. In a long-dormant wing of the estate, Logan uncovers an ingeniously hidden secret room, concealed and apparently untouched for decades. The room is a time capsule, filled with eerie and obscure scientific equipment that points to a top secret project long thought destroyed, known only as “Project S.” Ultimately, the truth of what Project S was . . . and what has happened in that room . . . will put Logan in the path of a completely unexpected danger.
One of his most thrilling novels to date, The Forgotten Room is replete with veiled, fascinating history, and all the exhilarating action and science that are the hallmarks of a Lincoln Child blockbuster.

REVIEW:
I am a big fan of Lincoln Child both his solo work and his collaborations with Douglas Preston so I looked really forward to reading this book in the Jeremy Logan series and I was not disappointed. This story has an old time feel. It is set in an old mansion with darkness and mystery surrounding it.

This book has a little bit of everything. Mystery, creepy old house, villians and the women they villainize and even a hurricane. You do not need to read the rest of the books in the series but I highly recommend Child’s books so why not start and the beginning and end with this great read.

This is a very fast read that has you wanting to turn the page all night long.

Kimberly reviews Memory Man by David Baldacci

Memory ManTITLE: Memory Man
SERIES #: Amos Decker #1
CHARACTERS: Amos Decker
AUTHOR: David Baldacci
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/21/15
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Amos Decker’s life changed forever–twice.

The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good, and left him with an improbable side effect–he can never forget anything.

The second time was at home nearly two decades later. Now a police detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare–his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered.

His family destroyed, their killer’s identity as mysterious as the motive behind the crime, and unable to forget a single detail from that horrible night, Decker finds his world collapsing around him. He leaves the police force, loses his home, and winds up on the street, taking piecemeal jobs as a private investigator when he can.

But over a year later, a man turns himself in to the police and confesses to the murders. At the same time a horrific event nearly brings Burlington to its knees, and Decker is called back in to help with this investigation. Decker also seizes his chance to learn what really happened to his family that night. To uncover the stunning truth, he must use his remarkable gifts and confront the burdens that go along with them. He must endure the memories he would much rather forget. And he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

MEMORY MAN will stay with you long after the turn of the final page.

REVIEW:
In the last few years we have heard about the condition that Decker has a lot. I am sure you heard of the people like Marilu Henner who can remember everything that has ever happened to them. There was even a tv show called Unforgettable that wrapped around the same idea of a cop who can walk into a crime scene and remember every moment and every scene. Well this is on the same concept.

Decker is an interesting character. He is not perfect. Really actually far from it. His gift is really a hard thing for him to live with since his family and friend were murdered. But he is a likeable (sorta) guy. If nothing he is interesting and you want to know more about him.

Baldacci has always had an different way of writing. He pulls you in from page one and this story is no different. I have heard that this story is a stand alone but then I also heard it is the first in the series so to be honest I am not sure but I know that if Baldacci decides to bring Decker back I will be picking up the book.

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts At the end of book 2 there are so many questions that need to be answered. So many OMG no’s about to come. The Last Town may be the shortest book in the series. But it was great. So great I am a little peeved at Mr. Crouch. I want more. I want to know what happens next. Anything???? Goodness!!!
I really can’t tell you to much without giving away spoilers. But know if you enjoyed book 1 and 2 you will enjoy this last installment.
I will say that there were a few moments that I wish were a little more painful for a certain few people. I did have to grab the tissues a few times. And the very last sentence of this book left me with a big ole “WTF Mr. Crouch”. Loved this series and can’t wait for the TV series!!

Ethan Burke has seen the world beyond. He’s sheriff, and one of the few who knows the truth—Wayward Pines isn’t just a town. And what lies on the other side of the fence is a nightmare beyond anyone’s imagining.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts Wayward picks up right where Pines left off. If you have not read Pines yet you really really have to read it. This trilogy is not one that you can pick up book 2 or 3 and be okay. No way. To much happens in each book that leads into the next. So if you have not started Pines you may want to stop here. I always try to make my reviews as spoiler free as possible. But I warned you.
*
Now that Ethan is sheriff of Wayward Pines he is expected to walk the line. But Mr. Pilcher (and I use that word Mister, very loosely) thinks that he has Ethan right where he wants him. Unfortunately for Mr. Pilcher, Ethan is a much much stronger person than anyone expects or could predict.
There is a lot that happens in Wayward. There is a murder (not a fete, an actual murder). A Murder the Ethan is asked to investigate. The results of that investigation will turn Wayward Pines world upside down and lead to Ethan making choices that could get all of them killed.

As in Pines, Paul Michael Garcia does a great job of bring the story to life. I am looking forward to the last and final book in this trilogy. I am a little scared as to what is going to happen.

Wayward Pines, is being turned into a TV series on Fox this May. I have seen the previews and it looks great! And it doesn’t hurt that one of my childhood crushes Matt Dillon is playing Mr. Ethan Burke. If you have not read this series I would suggest picking it up, but be prepared as of the end of this book it does not look like there will ever be a HEA.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts Anyone who follows me knows I love audiobooks and I am always looking for my next audio fix. So when Pines came up on my suggestion list I headed over to audible to listen to the sample and within a minute of listening I was sucked in and knew I had to listen to this story. This is both my first book by Blake Crouch and book narrated by Paul Michael Garcia and I enjoyed very much.
Pines is a twisted story that I could easily giveaway with one sentence but I don’t want ruin it for you. But I will say that as the story went on I lost hope, gained hope, lost hope and then was left with a whole lot of WTF?!!?!?
God I want to tell you so much. But I won’t. I am looking forward to what is next for Ethan and the town folk of Wayward Pines, ID.

Oh and if you didn’t know this: Pines is becoming a TV series on Fox in May 2015. I have seen the previews and it looks like it follows book one very closely.

Everyone in this small town is keeping big secrets—especially Landy’s old friends—and someone is willing to kill to keep their darkest deeds buried. . . .

REVIEW:
2.75 Hearts This story was previously released as Within The Shadows in 2007.I have enjoyed other stories by AC Arthur but I have to say I had the hardest time with this book. First there are so many characters that they all seem to mesh together. I never seemed to find myself caring about any of them. It felt like I was reading a soap opera or some teen drama where the group jumps from partner to partner in the same circle. I really just can’t say I enjoyed it and I am sorry to have to say that.

I will continue to read AC Arthur but think I will stick to her current reads and not the ones that are releases from before as her writing has improved so much.

Natasha reviews My Sister’s Grave by Robert Dugoni

my sisters graveTITLE: My Sister’s Grave
SERIES #: The Tracy Crosswhite Series
CHARACTERS: Tracy Crosswhite & Dan O’Leary
AUTHOR: Robert Dugoni
PUBLICATION DATE: November 1, 2014
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Tracy Crosswhite has spent twenty years questioning the facts surrounding her sister Sarah’s disappearance and the murder trial that followed. She doesn’t believe that Edmund House — a convicted rapist and the man condemned for Sarah’s murder — is the guilty party. Motivated by the opportunity to obtain real justice, Tracy became a homicide detective with the Seattle PD and dedicated her life to tracking down killers.

When Sarah’s remains are finally discovered near their hometown in the northern Cascade mountains of Washington State, Tracy is determined to get the answers she’s been seeking. As she searches for the real killer, she unearths dark, long-kept secrets that will forever change her relationship to her past — and open the door to deadly danger.

REVIEW: This was a new author to me and I found I enjoyed the book a lot. The storyline takes place twenty years after the incident and the mystery unfolds in real time along with tidbits of information from twenty years ago. I was intrigued and found I couldn’t wait to get more pieces of the puzzle. The whodunit was completely speculative on my part, and I was definitely surprised by the ending – which doesn’t happen often! The characters were all real and genuine in their own ways – love them or hate them. And there were plenty that I hated. For the most part though I enjoyed them all and was very pleased with the story.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A LIFE-AND-DEATH RACE AGAINST TIME

Deep in the woods of upstate New York a woman flees a blazing barn. She is burned beyond recognition, and her dying words point police to a labyrinth of “confinement rooms”-rooms designed to hold human beings captive-where they make other chilling discoveries.

In Manhattan, Kate Page, a single mom and reporter with a newswire service, receives a heart-stopping call from a detective on the case. A guardian angel charm found at the scene fits the description of the one belonging to Kate’s sister, Vanessa, who washed away after a car crash in a mountain river twenty years ago.

Kate has spent much of her life searching for the truth behind her little sister’s disappearance. Now, a manhunt for a killer who’s kept a collection of victims prisoner for years without detection becomes her final chance to either mourn Vanessa’s death-or save her life.

REVIEW:
If you are a fan of the suspense genre than Rick Mofina is an author you should have on your list to read. This mystery was engrossing and hard to put down. Kate was first introduced in the last book and we catch up with her again in this story. I could explain the story but the synopsis does a really good job.

I really enjoy Kate. She is a strong single mom and someone you would want to be friends with.

Again if you are a fan of mystery then this book will spark your interest. If you are a fan of Mofina’s you will enjoy this story and if you haven’t read him before then you will want to go back and get all of his books and start from the beginning.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts This is the first book in the Virals series by Kathy Reichs. This series tells the story of Tory Brennan – niece to famous forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan – and her friends Ben, Hiram and Shelton. These four are best friends who live on a secluded island and their parent’s work in a research facility. They are curious by nature and get into all kinds of trouble together. When an accidental discovery turns into a life or death situation their worlds change forever. I really enjoyed this story. Tory and her friends are a great group of kids to follow and are incredibly resourceful and courageous. The ending of the story came as a surprise to me, I didn’t see a lot of it coming – which is good. The writing is solid, comical and compelling. Once I got into it, I couldn’t put the book down. These kids are wild and the situations they get into are so crazy you have to keep reading to see how they’ll get out of it. There are many other books in the series and I’m just getting started.

Blue labyrinthTITLE: Blue Labyrinth
SERIES #: Pendergrast #14
CHARACTERS: Aloysius Pendergrast
AUTHOR: Preston & Child
PUBLICATION DATE: 11/11/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast’s most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California’s desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family’s sinister past. But Pendergast learns there is more at work than a ghastly episode of family history: he is soon stalked by a subtle killer bent on vengeance over an ancient transgression. In short order, Pendergast is caught in a wickedly clever plot, which will leave him stricken in mind and body…and may well end with his death.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts If you have not read a Pendergast novel I have one question for you. Why not? The writing partnership of Preston and Child has been dynamite and this series just keeps getting better and better. Pendergast is like… oh heck I can’t even think of a way to describe him. He is an enigma and his history is so secretive but this book opens it up a little bit which was great to read.

This book took a little bit of a turn with the main character which made it even more interesting and probably one of my favorites in a long time and that is saying something. The places that Preston and Child takes Pendergast makes you want to jump in the car and hit the road. Pendergast is truly a man of mystery and one that I can’t get enough of.

You should really read the entire story before you read this one but if you chose to grab this book up first just know that you will be heading to the store or online to get the beginnings of this incredible series.
