Excerpt:

“How the hell did you get in here?” She exhaled the words on a harsh exhale.

“That is not imperative at the moment. You must come with me.”

“Like that’s going to happen.” Covering her anxiety with a snort, she backed up to the door. Adrenaline chased away her fatigue and she searched for the handle. “It’s time for you to leave, the bar’s closed.”

Between one heartbeat and the next, he was in front of her. The overhead light glistened off his skin. An intangible force pushed her back against the cool metal of the door. Desire washed away her fear. “Who are you?” Violent, inexplicable need harshened her tone.

“That matter’s not.”

“It matters to me. You’re in my bar after hours. I have the right to know your name.”

“Nightmare.”

The name sent chills up her spine. “Nightmare, huh?” Just what I need some punk from the local gang trying to shake me down. She looked him over. His dark grey suit cast a question on gang affiliation. He’s not the type I’d expect to be causing problems for business owners. What is he into? Maybe not a gang…could the mob have moved into Sweetwater?

“I can bring your deepest fears alive.” His rich voice sent a rush of heat through her body.

She raised an eyebrow in question. Great, an escaped mental patient walks into a bar…can this night get any worse?

“If you don’t believe me look down.” The cool dare interweaving the words drew her gaze toward the floor—and it disappeared beneath her feet.

She stood on a steel beam hundreds of feet in the air. Frozen and unable to move, her heart thundered in her ears. Squeezing her eyes shut, she swallowed the hard lump in her throat. This isn’t real. She repeated the refrain, but not even the knowledge of standing in the bar dissuaded her mind from what her eyes told it. She dangled a thousand feet in the air, and panic engulfed her.

“Believe me now?” He taunted.

“Please…” I’m going to die. A tear escaped her clenched eyes and she peeked down again, the acrid taste of bile in the back of her throat. The floor became solid once more and she collapsed. Sucking in noisy gulps of air, she tried to reconcile the insane with the real, but her mind rebelled.

“Come with me now before we’re late.” Nightmare ordered, his impassive visage cold and unforgiving.

“What do you want?” She choked out.

“I mean you no harm…”

“No harm? Are you out of your mind?” It took everything she had not to vomit. “You just had me dangling on a steal beam. Get out.”

He squatted in front of her, remorseless. Catching her upper arm in his hand, she thought he wanted to pull her up, but froze and instead dropped to his knees beside her, his head bowed.

Alarmed further, she watched him warily. “What is it? Are you okay?”

“You’re a Queen.” His voice barely rose above a whisper. “A Stormkin Queen. The one I’ve searched for.”

By the time she leaves Netherfield, Elizabeth will have become disenchanted with her childhood playmate and obsessed with Mr. Darcy, her Master, who has told her that she would be more marriageable as a Netherfield submissive than as a curious virgin.  Elizabeth holds on to her affront at his callous regard for her until Charlotte marries Mr. Collins and Jane is discarded by Mr. Bingley.  Unwilling to save herself for a man who’ll make a good match and determined not to suffer Jane’s heartbreak, when she meets Mr. Darcy again at Rosings Park, she decides to become his slave and offers him her virginity.

But when she finds out that her cruel Master has destroyed Jane’s chance at marriage with Mr. Bingley, she rejects Mr. Darcy – even as he reluctantly proposes marriage to her. Spotlight Feature: Being Ariana & Being Bound by Cristal Ryder

Being Ariana & Being Bound

Being Ariana

Is it better to get lost in your fantasy, or be found in another’s?

Ellie Taylor lives her erotic dreams by masquerading herself as Ariana and visiting the Black Phantom. In this club where anything goes, she plans to perform onstage before an audience, building her sexual excitement to a fever pitch before selecting her man. But Ariana is sidetracked by a tall, blond masked maitre-d. He captivates her and all thoughts of performing are forgotten. He’s every bit as domineering as Ariana and pushes her to her sexual limit. Their true identities concealed, they set out to use each other for pleasure–no risk of entanglement or commitment…but that may prove easier said than done.

WARNING: Explicit sex/language, domination, bondage and kink

Excerpt:

Ariana was coming out to play.

A little over a week ago through underground channels, word reached Ellie Taylor that the Black Phantom’s Lost in Fantasy Affair was tonight. Ellie knew she would be drawn out for some naughty fun masquerading herself as Ariana, her bolder alter ego.

For a week Ellie, a highly paid and respected Senior Vice President of Beauty for an international department store chain, moved through her day job in a high state of erotic anticipation.

She felt like a child waiting for Christmas morning. The time seemed to crawl by and focusing on her tasks became a chore, but being a professional, she survived the wait on a knife edge of arousal. Her daytime persona paid the bills. A life which satisfied her for the most part and gave her a normalcy she craved. But no matter how hard Ellie tried to keep Ariana at bay, her mysterious night side craved to come out and play.

Thinking about what she might do as Ariana this evening at the Affair made her breath hitch a little more rapidly and her heart tango in her chest.

Finally, tonight is here.

Ellie sat before the mirror with an array of powders, blushes, lipsticks and brushes and Ariana slowly emerged under Ellie’s creative fingers. Ellie took a moment to sit back and gaze at her masterpiece. She watched her lips as they rested against the edge of the crystal goblet and sipped the delicious red wine. Creating the right mood for Ariana’s materialization was critical, and the ruby liquid along with the scented candles and dimmed lighting in her dressing room accomplished an ambience fitting for Ariana’s arrival.

Ellie’s distinctive sea-green eyes couldn’t be camouflaged but she could alter them with black eyeliner, smudged kohl and thick eyelashes, creating a complete shock against her almost translucent skin. The eyes were important to her and needed to be just right. She pressed her baby finger to the outside corner and rubbed lightly, blending out the shade.

Of course, the makeup she used came from the best companies. She laughed out loud. If only they knew the expensive products showered on her were used to completely change her appearance.

Ellie outlined her shell pink lips and stained them with chili-pepper red, a stark contrast adding to her disguise along with the black tinted blush she swept across her cheekbones. Now as Ariana, she raised her chin and turned her head from one side to the other, critically assessing herself. One last touch and she was done. Ariana smoothed a few stray hairs on the deep auburn hairpiece before securing it in place. It was cut in a bob that ended just below her chin. With her blond hair wound up under the wig, Ellie transformed into sultry, mysterious Ariana. No one would ever guess Ariana was Ellie, and that’s how she wanted it.

Taking the goblet of wine between her fingers, she rose and padded naked to the walk-in closet. It was extraordinarily neat and bigger than most bedrooms. A true perk to the position she held in the real world.

No longer Ellie, Ariana now stood before a three-way mirror, and how she loved it. She could view her body from all angles. She sipped the wine and turned slowly, looking at every inch of her skin over the rim of the glass. As a teenager she’d hated her body, but as she matured she realized the power it held and learned to love who she was. She became expert at artfully draping clothes to accentuate her voluptuous shape, incredible legs and an ass even Jay-lo would envy.

Ariana viewed her latest tattoo, set in the graceful curve of her waist, just above her hip and slightly to the back. The artist had expressed surprise when she’d asked for a wren. But once she’d showed him the image she wanted, he didn’t ask any more questions and had set about recreating the small and delicate bird on her flawless skin.

She longed to touch herself, and it took all her determination not to. Her stiff nipples and the firm skin along her belly to the springy neatly trimmed curls between her legs beckoned her fingertips, to caress and stroke. She ached with need but restrained herself, clutching the wine glass a little tighter. Ariana knew if she gave in and her fingers reached the juncture of her thighs, she wouldn’t be able to stop. And pleasuring herself would detract from later. So she let the anticipation of touch satisfy her for now. She must wait, and licked her lips with expectation. It was time to cover up and dress for the Black Phantom.

~Being Bound~

Lyrical’s readers choice for 2012

Sometimes reality is so much better than fantasy.

A man used to getting what he wants, Tom Rourke doesn’t take being discarded lightly. Smarting from rejection, Rourke decides the complication of women is distracting him from his goal. He refocuses his energy into ownership of the Black Phantom, where he meets Heather Canyon.

She must test him to ensure they are the right fit for each other and challenges him at every turn. She isn’t looking for a partner, but has she found her match with Rourke?

WARNING: Light BDSM, kink, explicit sex.

Excerpt:

Their gaze met and he smiled, showing his white, even teeth. He was a handsome man. There was no doubt about that.

“Heather.” He reached his hand out and she waited for the jolt of desire when their palms met. She wasn’t disappointed.

“Rourke.”

His gaze boldly slipped from her face and took in her appearance. She stepped back and opened her coat for him so he could see what she wore. Heather slipped it off and held it out without moving her gaze from Rourke.

“Viktor.” She didn’t say anything more, simply his name as a test to see how responsive he was.

He scurried over and grabbed the supple leather as she dropped it, making sure it didn’t hit the floor, then disappeared behind the curtains of the stage.

No look of surprise crossed his face once her full costume was revealed to him and her small sense of disappointment intrigued her. She had expected a reaction and wanted it. But didn’t receive one. Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly and she watched his features. She knew she look perfect and sensed he was trying to remain unaffected.

“So then, shall we continue our discussion?” Heather turned and looked out from the stage. She moved to the edge and stood with her legs wide and hands resting on her hips.

“What more is there to discuss?” He was behind her and she felt his heat. It raised her body temperature and a sweet fullness began to settle between her thighs. Heather couldn’t deny she was highly attracted to Rourke. But for now, she would enjoy the edge it gave her and not fall prey to his seduction. His breath fluttered her long hair.

“Boundaries, rules, trust, salary.”

He chuckled and the deep rumble from his chest slipped around her like a thunderclap.

She turned to face him and before he could reply she continued. “You find that funny?” His smiled stayed, but an eyebrow shot up. “I can tell this is all new to you,” she said with a dismissive wave, the black leather arm sheath shining in the dimming light, “it is quite serious business not to be taken lightly.”

He stepped back from her and crossed his arms over his powerful chest, still not saying anything.

Heather continued in an even and firm tone, “I know of your club and didn’t come without, quite possibly, better knowledge than you.”

He shook his head, “I doubt tha—”

Heather put her hand up and he halted mid sentence. “I have certain expectations, as I’m sure you do.” She walked to the far side of the stage. She felt the weight of his gaze on her and almost smelled his desire. “I’d like to see the back rooms.” She swung her gaze back to him. His face showed his surprise. Did he really think I wouldn’t know? She could tell he was thrown off balance. She accomplished the most important feat in less than ten minutes. He had to feel her power and control and accept it. When he didn’t say a word and led her backstage, he had made it evident her power radiated over him.

Blurb:

A life threatening attack woke Jackie Wilder up. Tired of waiting, her lioness is determined to convince her mate to claim her.

Haunted by his past, Kevin Roberts doesn’t dare allow anyone close, not even the woman he knows is his mate. Years spent as a lab experiment left their scars on his body. But when a lioness hunts, his desire may be their undoing.

Can Jackie help him shed the shackles of his past? Or will his scars rend them apart?

Excerpt:

Jackie Wilder struggled to sit up and her head swam. Every fiber of her body screamed out in pain when she moved, but she was tired of being stuck in bed. Tired of staring at nothing, but the pale blue walls of her room at Half Moon Harbor Resort. Her twin sister, Jacey, pushed open the bedroom door and relief washed through Jackie. It wasn’t Kevin Roberts.

Jacey, Jay, and she had always been the closest of the Wilder siblings. While the rest of their sisters were off exploring the world, they had stayed in Wilderville to assert themselves as leaders of their family pride.

“Jacey, what happened with Kevin? He sits here by my side hour after hour, yet he won’t speak to me. When I ask him a question, I get nothing but a few words. Things were always so easy between us. The friendship we shared is gone, and I don’t understand why.” The words poured out the moment Jacey shut the door giving them at least the idea of privacy. In a house full of lion shifters privacy was rare.

“Jackie, you were brutally attacked. He’s coming to terms with the fact we almost lost you.” Jacey sat on the edge of the bed, ignoring the damp spot created by her wet pink bikini. “You should have seen him when we got the news. It hit him hard, he’s realizing he could have lost you before he had the opportunity to claim you as his mate. Give him time.”

Jacey still struggled with finding her mate at such an inopportune time. She wasn’t prepared to accept Blake until her abusive ex Gray was completely out of her life and the only way that would happen was with his death.

“Give him time? Time to what? Deny what’s between us? I can’t sit around waiting for him forever. We’re supposed to be—destined to be together and he needs to accept that.” The pain of his denial ran through her like ice water. Quickly she closed the dam, refusing to give him satisfaction of tears, yet her heart broke knowing her mate was in the other room denying her. What’s so wrong with me that he would deny me?

“What do you want him to do, claim you while you’re still recovering?” Jacey tried to laugh it off but when Jackie remained mute, her twin raised an eyebrow in question.

“Yes.” Ignoring the nausea swamping her when she moved, Jackie scooted up further in the bed. “After the attack, I didn’t know if I’d make it. I was so cold. He was all I could think about. I wanted him there with me, to feel his touch one last time. To feel his lips on mine. Nicholas kept telling me Kevin would be there soon.” Tears coated her throat. “But damn it, I’ve known for over a year he was my mate, and he had to have known longer. I shouldn’t have had to wait all this time and I sure the hell won’t have to wait any longer.”

Series Spotlight: Lana Harvey, Reapers Inc. Series

“Graveyard Shift” (Book 1)

The Inferno has Evolved… Lana Harvey is a reaper, and a lousy one at that. She resides in Limbo City, the modern capital of the collective afterlives, where she likes to stick it to the man (the legendary Grim Reaper himself) by harvesting the bare minimum of souls required of her. She’d much rather be hanging out with Gabriel, her favorite archangel, at Purgatory Lounge. But when a shocking promotion falls in her lap, Lana learns something that could unravel the very fabric of Eternity. If the job isn’t completed, there could be some real hell to pay.

*****

“Pocket Full of Posies” (Book 2)

The promise of peace in Limbo City is threatened once again, but this time the terrorists have a more specific target in mind: Lana Harvey. The up and coming reaper thought passing her classes at the Reaper Academy was going to be her biggest challenge, but when a rebel demon sends her apartment up in flames, she realizes that her victories from the previous year haven’t gone so unnoticed after all… To make matters worse, the Afterlife Council has taken notice of Lana too. The Egyptian god Horus is blackmailing her into joining the Posy Unit so she can do an illegal side job for him, and Cindy Morningstar, Lucifer’s daughter, insists that she take a two week training course with the devilishly tempting Beelzebub, much to her angelic boyfriend’s chagrin.

*****

“For the Birds” (Book 3)

Lana Harvey isn’t just any reaper. She’s the new captain of the Posy Unit, a specialty group dedicated to harvesting mass quantities of souls from natural disaster sites, battlefields, and the like. The new title didn’t come without a price though. Lana made some promises along the way, and now it’s time to follow through… even if that means putting herself in the path of the three Fates, a fickle and mighty force to be reckoned with. The Fates run a soul recycling plant in Limbo City, and if Lana isn’t careful, they just might recycle her.

For former Navy SEAL Dare O’Rourke, Section 8 was legendary. The son of one of its missing members, he grew up in the shadow of its secrets. And that their handler was as shrouded in mystery as the missions themselves.

NOTHING CAN STOP THEM. NOTHING CAN BREAK THEM.

Now the handler of Section 8 has given orders to kill any remaining members, along with their families. Dare must save his long-lost half sister, Avery, whom he was never meant to meet. Determined to fight for their lives and find their missing father, Dare and Avery bring together for one last mission those who are in danger because of their relationship to Section 8—to avenge their families and to survive.

New mates Anne and Ivan must learn to control their bewildering new abilities, stay one step ahead of the KGB, and restore their kind before dragons slip into myth…or slavery.

Twenty years ago, a small private-school bus of children and their driver completely vanished on the way home from touring the state capital building of Oregon.   No clues were ever found. Two years later, a boy near death, Chris Jacobs, walked out of the Cascade Forest as the sole survivor.   Brain and physical trauma left him unable to help police find the other children and the investigation went cold. Today, multiple gravesites of children have been uncovered at an abandoned dairy farm and investigators determine they are the remains of the vanished children from the bus.

Investigative reporter Michael Brody anxiously awaits news of his missing brother’s body. All the lost children’s remains, except for Michael’s brother’s, are recovered. Desperate for answers, Michael reaches out to Chris Jacobs to see if Chris has recovered any memory to create leads for the investigation. Unable to locate Chris, Michael goes to Chris’s only relative, his younger sister Jamie. Attraction is instantaneous between Michael and Jamie. But so is utter frustration with each other’s attitude and opposing positions on Chris’s whereabouts and his inability to help the police. Michael and Jamie hunt for Chris, racing against a tattooed stranger who wants to find Chris and silence him permanently this time.

ExcerptPresent Day

“No press.” Suspicious cop eyes squinted at Michael.

The Oregon farm smelled strongly of manure, but there wasn’t a cow in sight. His research had told him the old dairy farm had been out of operation for over twenty years. Wood and wire fencing traced the edges of the fields in crooked, drunken lines. A hundred yards away stood a barn that Michael wouldn’t step foot into for a million dollars. He didn’t mind taking risks, but this building looked like it’d collapse if a bird landed on the sagging roofline. “I’m not here as press. I’m meeting up with Dr. Campbell,” Michael lied.

“The Medical Examiner left an hour ago.” The cop tilted up the brim of his hat, doubt in his gaze, knowing Michael was namedropping to get into the recovery site. How many reporters had he chased off today? The discovery of multiple hidden remains tended to draw out the vultures. One brow rose and challenged him to create a more original ruse.

Luckily Michael had one. “Not that Dr. Campbell. His daughter. Dr. Lacey Campbell.”

The cop ran a hand across his sweating forehead and checked his clipboard. His instant lascivious grin made Michael’s jaw clench.

“Oh, her. Yeah, she’s still here.”

Jackass.

“Can you let her know—”

“What’s your business with her? She’s in the middle of an excavation and a murder investigation. I don’t think she’ll appreciate me bugging her ‘cause some stalker is looking for her.”

“Oh, Jesus Christ.” Michael took half a step forward and lowered his voice. “Pick up your radio and get someone back there to tell Dr. Campbell that Brody’s finally here. She’ll want to talk to me.” He glanced at the fleet of police cars and obvious unmarked American sedans. “Callahan here yet?”

The cop’s eyes narrowed at the detective’s name and his hand moved to his radio. “Not yet.” He deliberately turned his back and spoke into his radio.

About time. Michael rubbed at the skin of his baking neck and wished for an icy bottle of water. Or beer. Would Lacey drag herself away to talk to him? When she was deep in a case she had a tendency to forget about the outside world. Her cell was turned off; he’d tried to call a dozen times.

The cop half turned his head and watched Michael from the corner of his eye as he spoke quietly into his radio. Michael ignored him, studying the recovery scene in the ninety degree heat. It was hot, dry, and dusty. Every time he inhaled, his lungs were coated with fine dirt.

Cops in navy blue uniforms dotted the brown fields. God, they had to be dying in this summer heat. Small white tents hid private procedures from prying eyes and the news helicopters’ cameras. Too many tents. More tents meant more bodies. A tall figure in a Tyvek protective suit strode from tent to tent.

Aw, shit.

Victoria Peres. Identifiable at any range. The rangy forensic anthropologist probably wouldn’t let him on the site even if Lacey held his hand. Michael blew out a hot breath and felt sweat trickle down the center of his back. He slipped his sunglasses back on and turned away. Might as well start making some more calls instead of wasting his time trying to get into Fort Knox. He needed to know what they’d found buried beneath the dirt; he wasn’t here for a story. This was personal.

“Hey!”

At the cop’s bark, Michael looked over his shoulder. He’d finished with his radio and had crossed his arms over his chest, biceps bulging below the short sleeves of his summer uniform. His name badge read “Ruxton.”

“You’re the damned newspaper reporter who raised a stink about our overtime pay,” Ruxton sneered.  “Had every suit on the city council pissed off about the overtime we get paid.”

Not again. Michael briefly closed his eyes.

Ruxton wasn’t nearly done. “If the city would loosen its ass to gives us some cash to hire more police, then we wouldn’t have to work overtime.”

“I didn’t—”

“You reporters just write headlines when someone decides to sue us because they dinged their head while running away during an arrest. Or because they broke a rib fighting against being cuffed. You don’t know—”

With two rapid steps, Michael closed the distance between them, eyes hot. “I’m also the reporter who helped hunt down that sick son-of-a-bitch cop killer last winter.”

The cop’s mouth slammed shut.

A little about Kendra:

As a kid, I read and read and read. Laura Ingalls, Nancy Drew, and Trixie Belden were my close companions, and I was never without a book in hand. Today, mysteries are my primary reading genre. I enjoy Lee Child, Karen Rose, Robert Crais, and Tami Hoag. But I also love a sweeping historical novel by Diana Gabaldon or a contemporary romance by Rachel Gibson.

I decided to try my hand at novel writing after I read a newspaper article about NaNoWriMo. Heck, I can do that. I sat down and wrote a contemporary romance but kept tripping over dead bodies in each chapter. I got the hint and my stories evolved into romantic suspense.

I joined my local Romance Writers of America chapter, the Rose City Romance Writers, and found a fabulous community dedicated to educating its members about writing and publishing. Book purchases are tax deductable?? I also belong to International Thriller Writers and the Kiss of Death Chapter of RWA.

In 2010, my manuscript, Stronger Than Bone, was a finalist in RWA’s prestigious Golden Heart® contest. This same manuscript caught the attention of Jennifer Schober of Spencerhill Literary Agency and she became my agent. The book is now published as HIDDEN.

I grew up in the lush Pacific Northwest and still live there with my husband, three daughters, two cats, and a Pomeranian. In the real world, I’m a dental hygienist who is fascinated with forensics, refuses to eat anything green, and loves a good Mai Tai on the beach on Kauai.
