Interview & Giveaway with Isabel Cooper

Books-n-Kisses is excited to welcome Isabel Cooper to the blog today .

Isabel CooperIsabel, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Isabel: I grew up as a faculty brat in a variety of boarding schools: first in Pennsylvania, then in southern California, and finally in Maine.  Now I live in Boston and take the subway everywhere, which means I get to read a lot. No kids, boyfriends, or pets: I shun responsibility.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Isabel:  At least since sixth grade.  The teacher read one of my essays aloud in class, everyone seemed entertained, and I thought that was pretty cool. Plus, I heard you could work in your bathrobe. I’m still hoping for that part one day.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?
Isabel: Other than a computer, not really! I try and do at least a thousand words a day when I’m on deadline, 500 when not. I actually do most of my writing during downtime at work. J Life with roommates has left me able to tune out most distractions.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?
Isabel:  The most rewarding moments are those when I’m really in the zone and words come easily—especially when dialogue is working, as that’s my favorite part. The most challenging is anything to do with physical details: sex, fighting, or geography. Lord, do I hate geography.

Can you please tell us about your latest book?Legend of the Highland Dragon Cover
Isabel:  She’s a late-Victorian secretary with ambitions beyond her East End roots! He’s a two-hundred-and-some-year-old shapeshifting Scottish dragon with a curse! They…fight crime? Kind of? They definitely fight one really awful guy.  And they make out a lot.

How did you come with the idea for this story?
Isabel:  My former editor, Leah Hultenschmidt, actually suggested dragons. I was all “Ooh, cool!” and started brainstorming, and settled on trying to do a version of “Beauty and the Beast” that made the Beast less of a jerk. (The instinct to do this is in like eighty percent of romance novelists, as far as I can tell—it’s like getting a tattoo in college. One can only hope to do it well, in both cases.)

Can you share with us your current work in progress?
Isabel:  I’m tackling the story of Stephen’s sister Judith, who’s being all kinds of weary-quasi-mortal-veteran out in Scotland, and the spy who loves her. Only he doesn’t love her yet: they’re in the stage where neither trusts the other and each is pretending to be way less badass than he or she is. As one does.

Who are some of your favorite authors?
Isabel:  Robin McKinley, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, Mercedes Lackey, Candace Camp,  and Georgette Heyer. This is a very abbreviated list. J

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?
Isabel: I can only hope! I really love how both McKinley and King, each in their own very different ways, mix fantasy or horror and romance, and I expect I’ve tried to imitate that a little in my own way.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

Isabel:  I’m actually at the office as I’m writing this, so it’s more Google Docs Pointer Roulette, but: okay, so Stephen and Mina have just cast this spell to keep Bad Stuff out, only it’s triggered his transformation, and he’s all “RUN NOW” and starts Hulking out. She runs, because she’s a sensible girl. He starts angsting in a paragraph or two.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Isabel: I’ve promised myself Doctor Sleep to read when I travel this December.  Otherwise, I tend to see what’s at the library when I go.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Isabel: Thank you very much for having me on here! I hope you enjoy the interview and Legend of the Highland Dragon.

Discovering your story’s true beginning…

Sometimes the most difficult part about writing a book is figuring out where to begin. And sometimes authors like myself end up with several false starts before finally discovering the true first page of their book. In the original version of Scorched I started the story with Connor and Caleb at age ten, on the day their father was killed and their destinies changed forever.

But while it’s certainly a dramatic, important scene with tons of dragon action, it doesn’t drop the reader right into the real crux of the current conflict—the dragon egg arriving at the museum and the soldiers trying to steal it. Ultimately, I ended up using a shorter version of this as a flashback later on in the final book. But I do still have some affection for this extended peak into the boys’ family life, before it was torn apart by dragons.

The second deleted chapter shows exactly how much a story’s backdrop can change over the course of editing. In the original version, Trinity goes to an Upper East Side boarding school in New York City, not Texas. And she has a history of hearing voices in her head, rather than hearing the first voice in the museum just before the break-in. And lastly, Connor is already there—watching her, readying to make his move, instead of arriving four months late. In this version you get to meet Trinity’s best friend Caitlin, who is mentioned a lot in the final version of Scorched, but never made a real appearance on the page.

It’s fun to look back at the story as it might have been. And I hope you enjoy the sneak peek into a writer’s head. Oh and by the way? At this stage the working title of the book was “Scales of Time.” (Which no one seemed to like but me! Sigh.)

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Prologue
Year 100, Post-Scorch

“RAWR!!!”

Ten-year-old Caleb Johnson leapt from the pile of twisted iron wreckage he’d been hiding behind, arms outstretched and fingers curled into claws. “I am the dreaded ruby dragon, Epsilon!” he declared, a fierce expression on his sunburned, freckled face. “Beware or I will unleash my mighty flames upon you!” He roared again for emphasis.

His identical twin brother, Connor, squealed into a mixture of delight and surprise as he expertly dodged his brother’s charge and took off running through the Pre-Flag building—down a rubble-filled corridor, beneath a blackened archway, leaping over crumbling cinderblocks and ducking rusty steel pipes, his brother hot on his heels. From above, orange rays of light from the setting sun leaked through cracks in the battered tin roof, effectively illuminating his path.

“You cannot get away!” Caleb cried from behind him. “No one can escape a dragon! RAWR!”

Connor dead-ended in a long, chamber, filled with rotting wooden benches that faced some kind of elevated stage and dusty altar. The roof had held here, allowing him a better glimpse into what the room must have looked like, once upon a time. A church, his mother had told them when they’d taken shelter here earlier that day.

Caleb burst into the room, his crooked teeth bared in a ferocious snarl. Connor laughed, running down the aisle and grabbing a metal scepter that lay abandoned on the ground near the altar. Turning on his brother, he wielded the metal object as if it were a mighty gun-blade.

“I don’t need to escape,” he proclaimed bravely. “I am a Hunter. And I will take you down!” He leapt forward, ready to destroy the mighty dragon once and for–

“Caleb? Connor? Get back here where I can see you.”

Connor lowered his gun-blade. “Awh, Mom.”

“We’re just having fun,” Caleb added.

Their mother poked her head into the chamber. “Well, dinner’s almost ready,” she informed them. “You do want to eat, don’t you?”

It wasn’t really a question. Dropping his makeshift weapon, Conner scrambled after his mother and brother down the rubble-filled hall and into the stifling heat of a smaller entry room with four good walls, ceiling and door. His mother had swept out all the ashes when they’d first arrived and set up a makeshift camp—complete with cinderblock fire, on which she had set her large cast-iron pot. She looked over at her boys and smiled.

“And how are my brave little Dragon Hunters?” she asked, a teasing look in her eyes.

“Starving,” Connor replied, peering into the cauldron where the soup bubbled and boiled. The smoke stung his eyes, but the smell more than made up for it.

“Well, you’re in luck. My snares caught a couple of rats today. So there’s real meat in the soup.” She grabbed two cracked ceramic bowls from one of the worn knapsacks she’d piled in a corner, ladling the cauldron’s contents into them and handing them to her sons. Mom was an expert at making what Dad jokingly called “stone soup” with the scarce ingredients she could scavenge while camping out on the surface lands.

The boys settled down on their sleeping mats and Connor brought the bowl to his mouth, burning his tongue on the steaming liquid. It was a bit bland–they’d run out of salt earlier that week–but it would fill his rumbling stomach and that was all that mattered in the end.

A sudden noise outside made Mom leap to her feet, grabbing the knife from her belt and gripping it tightly in her hand. “Who’s there?” she demanded, her voice almost fierce enough to disguise her fear. “We’re armed and will not hesitate to defend ourselves.”

“Will you now, my love?” asked the tall, burly man sauntering through the door. The boys squealed in delight as they dropped their bowls to great their father. Mom set down her knife, letting out a sigh of relief, as Caleb and Connor fought to hug Dad first. He dropped down to their eye level and ruffled their matching brown heads of hair.

“My boys!” he cried, kissing each of them on the cheek. “Have you been good? Keeping your mother safe for me?”

“Yes, Sir,” Connor assured him with a small salute. “She’s all right. And there’s rat in the soup tonight.”

Dad flashed a smile at Mom. “Rat in the soup,” he repeated. “Well, this is a good night indeed then.” He rose to his feet and walked over to his wife, wrapping his arms around her and squeezing her close.

“Any luck today?” Connor heard her ask in a low voice.

Dad released her from his embrace and walked over to the corner to pull off his dusty jacket and boots. “No,” he replied. “But he’s out there. I can smell his smoke in the air. And his shadow crossed the sun at least twice today. It’s as if he’s searching for something.”

Mom handed him a bowl of soup. “Forget him, then,” she urged. “We’ve been out here thirty days now and he’s not come down. We’re out of food and it’s not good for the boys to be out here so long.”

“Is it really any better down below?” Dad asked her pointedly. “With no dragon heart, we have no money and no means to buy bread or meat. We’ll end up living in Shanty Town. At least up here, we’re free.”

“Free to get eaten by a dragon or murdered by wandering bandits.”

“But thirty pieces of silver, love! I slay this dragon and we’ll live like kings and queens!”

“Please. I’d rather have you alive and well than be any kind of stuffy royalty.”

Dad chuckled at her grumpy face. “Oh, wife,” he teased. “What did I do to deserve you?” He planted a kiss on her sunburned nose. “Okay, you win,” he said. “Tomorrow when the sun rises, we’ll head straight to the C Gate. Go underground and regroup. Maybe send the boys to school for a bit.” He sat down on his mat and started sipping his soup.

Connor and Caleb looked at one another with distaste. The last thing they wanted was to go below again. Where it was cramped and dirty and crowded with other people. They preferred it up here–a surface land filled with undiscovered treasures from the old world. Even if they did have to worry about–

An inhuman howl pierced through the evening air.

Dad was on his feet instantly. “It’s him,” he announced, looking over at Mom with an excited gleam in his eyes. “My last call must have reached him. He’s coming in at last.”

Mom swallowed hard, turning to the boys. “Go to the innermost chamber,” she instructed, her voice thick with fear. “The one with the best roof. And wait there until you hear from us.” She doused the fire and started grabbing their things, stuffing them into bags.

“But Mom!” Connor protested. He didn’t want to miss out on the action.

“No backtalk. Do it now!” Her voice left no room for argument.

The boys reluctantly turned and headed down the rubble-filled corridor, toward the large chamber. When they were out of sight of their parents, Caleb turned to Connor, his eyes shining with excitement. I know a place we can watch from, he told him, using their silent twin speak that no one else could hear. I found it earlier today. Mom will never know.

Connor grinned. Major. Lead the way.

He followed his brother through a now darkened corridor, through a caved-in wall and up a pile of rubble until they reached a broken glass window that led out onto the roof. Caleb squeezed his skinny body through and then turned, motioning for his brother to follow him.

Connor looked reluctantly at the window. I don’t know… he hedged.

Dad’s going to slay a dragon, Connor. You want to miss it?

Connor shook his head. “No, of course not,” he said aloud, making up his mind and climbing through the window, careful not to cut himself on the glass. Without proper medicine, the smallest cut out here could be deadly. He followed his brother up the metal roof, slick from a recent rain, until they could peek over to the other side of the building, where Dad was readying for his fight.

They looked at each other and grinned, then turned back to the scene. Dad had pulled his mighty gun-bade from its holster and readied his shield, the shiny metal gleaming in the dusky eve. As the boys watched, he scanned the darkened sky, eyes locking onto his target, far above. Connor followed his gaze. A Sapphire, he realized. Only half grown by the look of it. Should be an easy fight for an experienced Dragon Hunter like their father.

“It’s so beautiful,” Caleb said with a dreamy sigh. “It’s almost a shame Dad has to kill it.”

Connor shuddered, seeing nothing beautiful about the hard-scaled creature with razor sharp teeth and vacant eyes. The dragon seemed to dance through the sky, flittering about, toying with their father. Dad shrugged the gun-blade onto his shoulder and readied his first shot. Sucked in his breath, lining up his target. Then he pulled the trigger.

The dragon let out an angry screech as the bullet bounced harmlessly off its sapphire plated scales. He’d missed the sweet spot. The one soft scale under the left wing. Dad liked to brag about one-shot kills. But today evidently wasn’t his day.

The creature released a stream of fire–scorching the ground mere feet from where their father had stood–Dad leaping backwards, just in time. Connor scooted further up on the roof, to get a better look, his heart feeling as if it would crack his ribs it was beating so hard.

Come on, Dad! he urged his father silently. Kill it!

Suddenly the dragon whipped its head around, stony eyes locking straight onto Connor as if it had heard his silent cry. Shock caused him to lose his balance on the slippery roof and a moment later he found himself tumbling down the other side, as the dragon’s screech reverberated in his ears.

He slammed onto the desert floor, a sharp pain shooting up his leg as his ankle crumpled and cracked.

“Connor!” Dad cried in a horrified voice. He started toward his son. But the dragon was too quick, coming down for a fast landing. Panicked, Connor tried to scramble away, but his foot dragged uselessly–his ankle likely broken.

He looked up and found himself face to face with the dragon, now standing only a few feet away, studying him with cold eyes. The creature pulled back its head, smoke billowing from its nostrils. Connor swallowed hard. One more moment and the fire would come. And it would be over forever.

He squared his scrawny shoulders instead, ready to face death like a man and–

Suddenly Connor found himself being grabbed and thrown–like a sack full of hot potatoes. He hit the ground a few yards away with a hard thump, the pain shooting up his leg all over again. But it scarcely registered as he watched the dragon let loose a stream of fire–striking his father–who had dropped his shield and gun-blade to save his son–full force in the chest. For a moment, his dad’s body just stood there, as if frozen in place while being engulfed in a sea of flames. Then he fell to the ground, screaming with agony.

“No!” Connor cried. In a fit of adrenaline-pumped rage, he dove at the discarded gun-blade. Gripping it in his hands, he turned to the creature, and, before the dragon could conjure up another blast, charged full force. Stabbing the gun-blade straight into the creature’s soft spot, just as his father had taught him to do.

The dragon bellowed in agony, collapsing to the ground and writhing in pain as the blade pierced its unprotected heart. Connor met the creature’s eyes with his own, staring it down with defiant rage. He yanked out the blood-soaked blade and stabbed the now helpless creature again. And again.

And–

“Connor, stop! He’s dead. The dragon’s dead!” He felt his mother’s arms grab him from behind and drag him away. He collapsed onto the ground, once again aware of the pain in his ankle. His mother dropped to her knees, searching his face with her own tear-stained one.

“Dad?” he managed to say, even though he already knew in his heart what her answer would be.

Mom shook her head. “I’m sorry Connor,” she said, tears streaming down her own cheeks. He buried his face in her chest, letting the grief take him. She held him close, rocking him gently, soothing him in soft whispers.

“I can’t believe he’s gone,” he sobbed against her.

“I know sweetie,” she murmured. “But he died a hero. Always remember that. And you’re a hero, too. The way you killed that dragon…” He could feel the shake of her head. “You must have inherited your father’s skills as a Dragon Hunter.”

He shrugged, pulling away from her embrace and limping over to the dead dragon. He spit on the corpse, wishing there was some way to inflict even more pain and suffering on the creature who had taken his father away from them.

“I’ll have my revenge on the rest of your kind,” he whispered to the dragon. “I won’t rest until dragons have been wiped out for good.”

Chapter Two
New York City, Present Day

“Hey, don’t look now, but that vampire over there is staring at you again.”

Sixteen-year-old Trinity Brown set down her sandwich and spun in the direction her best friend, Caitlin Curry was gazing, across the high school cafeteria. Caitlin swatted her arm.

“I said don’t look. Jeez!”

But it was too late and beyond the trays of mystery meat and half-eaten slices of pizza, Trin found herself locking eyes with the “vampire” in question, who was lounging a few tables away and indeed staring at her intently–not even having the decency to look away when caught in the act.

With tousled brown hair, pale white skin and eyes rimmed in black kohl, she had to admit, he did kind of resemble a creature of the night and his dark gaze sent shivers down her spine. Flushed, she hurriedly dropped her eyes and turned back to her friend.

“That’s not a vampire,” she replied, disguising her sudden unease with a loud, barking laugh. “There’s not a single sparkle on him.”

They erupted into giggles, breaking the spell and Caitlin, seemingly satisfied, dug into her cafeteria special–Salisbury steak. It was hard to fathom how the skinny girl wasn’t three-hundred pounds, the way she wolfed down her food. Trin reached for her own tofu and cheese sandwich that her grandfather had bagged her that morning and took a bite.

But today, her favorite sandwich tasted more like cardboard, and she was unable to shake feeling of the boy’s stare, scorching her backside with the intensity of a thousand suns. Annoyed, she tossed the sandwich back on the table.

“What?” Caitlin asked, her mouth full of mashed potato. It was always a surprise to her when people turned down food. Even if it was only tofu.

Trin frowned. “He’s still staring.” She wasn’t sure how she could tell, sitting with her back to him and all, but somehow she knew it to be true.

“He’s been staring at you all week, girl,” Caitlin reminded her. She strained her neck to get another peek. “Don’t worry–he looks harmless. Cute, even, if only he got rid of that eyeliner and made friends with a tanning bed. Looks to me like Mr. Goth hasn’t seen the sun in the last sixteen years.”

“So who is he again?” Trin asked. Caitlin was a walking Wikipedia when it came to the student body. Especially when it came to boys.

“New kid. Name’s…Connor Johnson, I believe. Came here a week ago. From Seattle or something. They grow ’em scrawny out there. Bi-product of nineties grunge-era parents and too much organic at an impressionable age.”

Trin processed the information. Then she shrugged. “Well, wherever he’s from, I don’t appreciate him staring at me like that,” she replied with a scowl. “It’s freaking me out.” She squirmed in her seat, weirded out, but not quite knowing why.

“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it,” Caitlin assured her. And before Trin could stop her, her friend was on her feet. “Hey dude!” she cried, in a voice loud enough to attract half the cafeteria. “Lay off with the stalker thing, won’t you? Girl’s not interested!”

The cafeteria erupted in laughter and conversation as everyone turned to check out the scene. Trin watched as the boy–Connor–rolled his eyes and rose from his seat with a fluid elegance that surprised her. He grabbed his long, black coat and military style backpack, then strolled leisurely out of the cafeteria without another look back.

“There.” Caitlin said, plopping back down on her own stool, a triumphant look on her freckled face. She pushed her glasses up her nose. “Edward Cullen won’t be bothering you again.”

Trin pushed her sandwich away, no longer hungry. “Yeah,” she said, her voice sounding more disappointed than she’d meant it to. “Probably not.”

Situation seemingly satisfied, Caitlin launched into a lament about the obscene amount of homework Mr. Murphy had given her A period and how there was no way she’d possibly be able to do it all, especially when she had a date with Todd tonight. Trin tried her best to provide the expected murmurs of sympathy to fill the pauses in her best friend’s monologue, but found herself repeatedly stealing glances at the doorway in which Conner had disappeared.

But the strange transfer student didn’t make a reappearance, which was, most likely, for the best. After all, Trin didn’t need any more unwanted attention, that was for sure. And even if the guy did have some kind of new-kid crush on her, he’d learn soon enough from the other students why that was a very bad idea.

Still, there was just something about him. The way he stared at her, with those strange, haunted eyes of his. As if he were desperate to tell her something…

She shook her head. Don’t even go there, Trin. Remember what happened the last time.

Speaking of eyes, she suddenly realized that by managing to shake off one boy’s attentions, she’d managed to gain half of East Side Academy’s. Hunching in her seat, she could sense their laughing mouths and bated breath, as if begging her to do something crazy for their lunchtime amusement. It was a small school, after all, and they all knew her history.

She rose from her seat. “I’m out,” she said, grabbing her brown bag and shoving her sandwich into it.

“But lunch isn’t over,” Caitlin protested.

“I’ve got to hit the nurse’s.”

Her friend nodded understandingly and gave her a mock salute. “Love you girl.”

“Love you, too.”

Trin stuffed her ear buds into her ears, turning up her iPod full blast, as she maneuvered her way through the rows of tables, avoiding eye contact with anyone she passed. The deep, soulful crooning of her favorite Goth singer filled her ears–a particularly effective mix for drowning out her fellow student body. Unfortunately, she didn’t need her ears to know exactly what they were saying about her as she passed. They even had a chant, made up by Amber Madden during a particularly boring seventh grade recess, which had stuck ever since.

Trin Brown is insane
Something wrong with her brain
Hearing voices in her head
Seeing people who are dead.

For the record, Trin had never, at least knowingly, seen anyone dead. And the voices? The doctors had finally come up with a way to silence those permanently. Unfortunately that wasn’t until after the long-ago Sixth Grade Incident of Crazy that no one at East Side Academy seemed willing to forget.

If only she’d been able to attend a different high school. One on the West Side, maybe, where no one knew about her and her broken brain. But East Side Academy was the only one willing to give her a full boat scholarship with her dubious medical record and her grandfather’s dwindling bank account had guilted her into taking it.

Can’t let a few bullies ruin a world-class education, she reminded herself, uttering one of grandfather’s favorite platitudes. Though sometimes she wasn’t sure it was worth it.

Trin turned the corner and headed down the empty, florescent-lit hallway, lined with red lockers, toward the school infirmary. Pushing open the door, she greeted old Nurse Darien, who was sitting at her desk, as always, lost in a romance novel. The nurse gestured vaguely to a table full of prescriptions and Trin grabbed her own, dry swallowing two tablets and setting the bottle back down on the counter. It was a ritual they went through every day.

Might as well hit the library before class, she decided, having no desire to go back to the jeering faces in the cafeteria.

Trudging down the hallway, staring down at her black converse, music still blaring in her ears, Trin turned the corner, assuming the next corridor would be as empty as the last. Instead, she found herself slamming into something solid. Make that someone solid. Very solid, in fact.

“Sorry, she muttered, pulling the ear buds from her ears. “I wasn’t looking where…” She trailed off, her eyes widening as she realized just who she’d slammed into.

None other than Mr. Vampire himself.

Interview & Giveaway with Anne Elizabeth

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcom Anne Elizabeth to the blog today to chat about her newest release.

Anne Elizabeth Headshot WebAnne, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I’m a Navy wife, a step-mother, a grandmother, a romance writer, a columnist, and a comic creator. I have a BS in Business and A MS in Communications from Boston University. I am a member of the Author’s Guild and RWA as well as a regular presenter at RT Book Lovers Convention. My contemporary romance is for adults and focuses on Spec Ops and Navy SEALS, and my paranormal comics are geared toward teens. I like the outdoors and we have an exuberant yellow Lab. My husband and I volunteer for the California State Parks, and we enjoy the quiet.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Yes, I’ve always wanted to be a published author. My mother tells this adorable story…when I was three I taught myself to read, because I had stories I wanted to put into books. Unfortunately, it took considerably longer to figure out how to write and get them into actual story form.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I can write anywhere. I’ve huddled over my laptop and worked in airports, comic-cons, restaurants, coffee shops, military air terminals, and all sorts of odd places. When work calls, you have to hunker down and do it with a flare. 🙂

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?9781402268939-PR

Every woman dreams of marrying the perfect man—handsome, thoughtful, strong, and sensitive —and Aria Kavanagh believes she’s found the ultimate hero in Petty Officer Second Class Daniel McCullum. But being a U.S. Navy SEAL wife is a serious challenge, especially when the missions are putting more than their love in the line of fire. Can they jump the hurdles and handle the daily rigors without falling apart? Or will the pressures attached to the handsome uniform have them both questioning if their dedication is worth it? Every moment matters when the only thing that truly lasts is love.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

The first question most fans ask me is…what is it like being married to a Navy SEAL? So, I asked my editor if I could write a story that was out-of-the-box of the normal romance novel. Could I give fans exactly what they requested? My editor at the time was Leah Hultenschmidt, who is a brilliant editor that adored the concept and encouraged me on this unusual path. So, I spoke with many SEAL, Air Force, Army, and Marine wives, and they added to my story. I hope fans enjoy ONCE A SEAL as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I am in edits for my third SEAL book called A SEAL FOREVER. Enclosed is a sneak peak of the cover. It’s about a SEAL that loses his leg in combat. This book is very dear to my heart as we see more and more active duty military coming home with injuries. I want the public to know these men for the heroes they are, and to celebrate their sacrifice, their sexiness, and their strength.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I’d like to spend time chatting with Nora Roberts. I met her briefly at a RWA Convention, but never had the chance to ask her the multitude of questions that were bubbling in my brain.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Set goals for yourself and stick to them. Take yourself seriously and work through an entire manuscript and then seek feedback, whether that is through an editor or contests, a critique group, and/or friends. Then, submit, submit, submit. Also, realize that being able to take criticism and feedback is part of this job. In creative fields, there will always be opinions that differ from your own, and that can be great. It starts a dialog and who knows where that dialog where go.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

I’ve actually been working on my bucket list this past year. I’ve already jumped from a plane, flown a Mooney plane, flown a glider, kayaked in the ocean, snorkeled with sharks, and swam with sea turtles. I have a list of hikes and places I’d like to visit such as going back to Scotland.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I recently received Anne Rice’s new werewolf novel. It’s on the top of my pile—some books get to jump the line— and it’s my treat for when I finish this next chunk of work. Rice is a brilliant author, and I enjoy her dynamic writing.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Interview & Giveaway with Mary Wine

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Mary Wine to the blog for the first time.

Mary, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Hello. I spend the better part of my day listening to the voices in my head and taking orders from a parrot. Ummm…I meant to say. I’m a writer and work very hard to transform my imagination world into novels while my parrot keeps me company.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I think I have. Of course I wanted to be a ballerina but I did make up stories to tell to my younger brother as we traveled in my father motorhome. I recall deciding to write a romance novel when I was about 14. Got out the type writer, lord, remember those things? And worked on it in spite of my brothers teasing. No, I never finished that one and it wasn’t until about ten years ago that I sat back down to write again. Thank Goodness computers had come along. Spell check is my BBF!

Are you a plotter or a punster or combo of both? And you explain the difference?

I think I’m a hybrid. A plotter is someone who outlines the novel. A punster is someone who gets an idea and then sees where the charters take them. I tend to write an outline and sit down to write the book. However, often, I need a new outline by the time I finish the book because the story went a different direction.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

My parrot is my office manager? Really. She’s an umbrella cockatoo and watches me.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?9781402264771-PR (1)

How to Handle a Highlander is book three in the Sutherlands. Gahan is the bastard son of the earl, the child of the woman he loved. Moira is the half-sister of the Frazer laird and only has one purpose…to wed and form an alliance. Her brother wants to feud with the Sutherland, so Moira is set to wed a man old enough to be her grandfather to unite the clans against the earl. Gahan knows this and will do anything to prevent the wedding. Only he didn’t expect to be drawn to Moria.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I think I began to get a feel for this one while I was writing the book before it, How to Handle a Highlander. I also love to look at history and weave in some of the harsher edges of reality that these people had to endure. The fact is that marriage was considered a business. Old men often wed young women because they wanted more children and needed young brides. Being the daughter of the laird might sound great, until you realize that you were expected to do your duty. It might sound easy for us to say…not on your life! But the people born in these eras had to face the very real fact that their action could and often did have deadly results when the groom you turned down went after yer clansmen in retribution.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m working on book four in the Sutherlands. It will be the story of Saer MacLeod….and it’s almost done.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

Beatrice Small.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Turn off the tv, Facebook and video games and write. You can’t sell what you haven’t written.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

I would love to go to Egypt.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

The Hunger Games.

What is one book everyone should read before they die?

I think everyone should read the major books of the major religions because maybe we all might find things in common to talk about instead of picking at one another.

What is your favorite time of year & why?

I actually love all seasons but I do live in Southern California, so there are those who say we don’t really have a winter. We do, we do. I have to socks on and get out the space heater when it get’s below 60. My poor little parrot can’t take that sort of a cold spell.Who is your Celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet them?

Dame Judy Dench or George Takei. I would do a lot of listening if I met them. I think they both have a lot of life experience to share.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks so much to every reader who picks up one of my books. I can’t begin to tell you how much it means to me to have anyone reading my work.

Cheers!

You can find me on Facebook and my website.

Interview & Giveaway with Anne Cleeland

Anne CCan you please share with us a little about yourself?

I’m a lawyer by trade, and for years I earned my living writing dry legal briefs and thinking that I really should try to write fiction.  I’ve always been a reader, and I think most readers (after you’ve read your ten-thousandth romance) think they could probably write a decent story.  One day I went to my local RWA chapter meeting and I’ve loved every minute since—I strongly urge those of you who are in the same boat to find a group and just get started; it’s so much fun!

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Not really—although I’ve always invented stories to amuse myself.   I think it’s probably easier if you consider writing as a hobby, and so if you happen to sell your story, that’s great. But if I never sold, I’d still be writing these stories because I enjoy them so much.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

I love romance, I love mystery and I love adventure stories, and I try to combine all three in each story.   For romance, my favorite is Georgette Heyer; for mystery, Agatha Christie; and for adventure, Edgar Rice Burroughs.  Their stories always have great characters and interesting, fast-moving plots, and that’s what I try to imitate.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

I’ve read a million Regencies, and so that’s an era that I enjoy. I also write a contemporary mystery series that has a strong romance plotline.  I would love to write fantasy and science fiction, too.

What are some of your writing rituals?

Mainly I write whenever and wherever I get a chance—even in the middle seat of an airplane.  I do like to have some diet Dr. Pepper handy, though.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Daughter of the God-King is mostly set in Egypt.  The daughter of famous Egyptologists must travel to the Valley of the Kings to find out what happened to her parents, who are missing.  They were last seen working at their latest dig—the tomb of an unknown pharaoh’s daughter. Suddenly, various factions from Napoleon’s last war are pursuing the heroine, thinking she knows where her parents hid an unknown treasure. The hero is her parents’ mysterious agent, who is definitely not what he seems—but is he friend or foe?  In the end, the secrets contained in the tomb of the god-king’s daughter will change her life forever, and threaten to set the world ablaze in another war.

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

I’m a seat-of-the-pants writer, which means I have no idea.  I start writing and the story just seems to develop as I go along.  I always like to have big twists in my story, and this one has a doozy.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’ve already written several more Regency adventure stories similar to this one—the stories are independent, but have cross-over references.  I also am writing a contemporary mystery series; Murder in Thrall came out in July and Murder in Retribution will come out next July.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

On the streets of Paris, the heroine is approached by a strange gentleman who will not identify himself but who nervously urges her to return to England, and to avoid Egypt at all costs.

What would you be if you were not an author?

A detective.  As long as nothing too scary happens.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’ll be with everyone else, lining up to see the next installment of The Hunger Games.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

It’s a great time to be a reader, so I’d urge everyone to take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities on-line, such as Goodreads or great blogs such as this one.  And don’t forget your local bookstore—they need your support, too. And if you have the itch to write a book, just start typing; every journey starts with a single step.

Hattie Blackhouse is the only child of famous Egyptologists, and when they go missing, she travels to their latest excavation in ancient Thebes only to discover that she is attracting interest from the French, the British, and the Egyptians, who believe her the reincarnation of a long-dead princess.

In the second book in the Regency series, the heroine finds herself in the crosshairs of factions who are vying to support or thwart Napoleon’s latest attempt at world domination—and she unknowingly holds the key.

Can you please share with us a little about yourself

Thanks for inviting me to share with you today.  I am excited to announce the release of my newest Regency novel, Midsummer Bride.  I took a chance with this book and wrote an unconventional heroine – an American heiress who is more interested in scientific experiments than finding a husband.  I see a little of myself in her and hope even science nerds can find love!

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I have always had stories floating around I my head, but I never thought of actually being a writer until a friend gave me a copy of a historical romance novel.  When I read the story, it resonated with the stories I had in my head such that I wanted to try writing one myself.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

Because I also have a day job and a family it’s hard to say I have a “typical” writing day.  Most of my writing happens when everyone else is in bed!

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

The most challenging part of writing is going back every day and continuing to slog along, even when I have no idea where I am going.  The best part about writing is getting to watch the characters that have been running around my brain come alive on the page.

Can you please tell us about your latest book?9781402271816-PR

Midsummer Bride was just released last week and is my second in the Marriage Mart trilogy (but you can read the books in any order!)  Miss Harriet Burton, a horrendously rich American heiress, laughs too loud, states her opinion directly, and even conducts science experiments. Her aristocratic uncle is desperate to get her off his hands and is offering a king’s ransom to anyone able to arrange a suitable marriage that comes with a title. In contrast, Harriet’s interests lie in science, returning to America, and avoiding matrimony, until she meets Duncan Maclachlan, Earl of Thornton. When Thornton is falsely accused of being a traitor, Harriet must use her knowledge of chemistry to find the real culprit and spark true romance.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I grew interested in writing an American heroine when I discovered how English ships of this time were patrolling the newly formed American waters, seizing American vessels, and since American citizenship was not recognized, impressing American sailors into service for the Royal Navy. And all this was legal under British law!  Of course the Americans felt differently about this and it was one of the reasons for the War of 1812.  Anyway, I began to wonder what would happen to an American heiress who gets caught up in one of these raids and is taken back to England, hence Midsummer Bride.

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

I am currently finishing Winter Wedding, which completes the trilogy and the story of Miss Penelope Rose, marriage matchmaker, and the Duke of Marchford, marriage avoider, who are featured prominently in all three Marriage Mart books (Wedding in Springtime, Midsummer Bride, and Winter Wedding).

Who are some of your favorite authors?

There are so many I can hardly count, but I know Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer definitely drew me into writing in the Regency period.  I especially enjoy books with a lively plot and a dose of humor!

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

We all stand on the shoulders of the authors who have come before us, particularly those pioneers of historical romance who have established the genre. However, when I write I tend to look inward at my own stories and characters. It is tremendously rewarding to see the characters who have inhabited my brain come alive on the page.

Open your book to a random page and please reads us a few lines.

Ok, this is fun!  I have randomly opened to page 180.

“Legend has it the faeries and other fey creatures come out to play on Midsummer’s Night Eve. So for centuries people have been building bonfires to keep away unwanted spirits intent on causing mischief,” said Thornton.

“Like Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream?” asked Harriet.

“Precisely. Best to keep out of the forest lest that mischievous sprite Puck give ye a love potion.”

“Disastrous! I shall stay away!” She wondered how she could arrange a meeting with this Puck. Might be useful to have a love potion.

Thornton smiled. “Aye, beware the faeries.”

If he knew what she was thinking he would do well to beware of her.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Christmas novellas.  I’m crazy about them!  I love reading short holiday themed stories around the holidays.  Now if I could just finish my work in progress!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks so much for inviting me.  I hope a little Midsummer Bride will warm your hearts this holiday season!    I love to hear from readers so come visit me at my website, facebook, or twitter.

Interview & Giveaway with Pamela Sherwood

PamelaWelcome to the blog Pamela, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I am a native Southern Californian and a third-generation Chinese American, who grew up in a family of teachers. For a time, I considered a career in academia as well. I studied English literature and history, specializing in the Romantic and Victorian periods, and eventually earned a doctorate. I worked for several years in reference and academic publishing, before turning to fiction writing full time.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Pretty much. I was an avid reader from the time I was a small child, which led inevitably to making up my own stories and entertaining myself with them during the boring classes, on long car trips, and on the walk to and from school. I think I was in third or fourth grade when I sensed I’d begun something that was going to be a permanent part of my life!

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I don’t think of myself as being particularly quirky as a writer, although I’ve been known to stay up really late or get up really early when inspiration happens to strike. The most recent example of that was a couple of months ago, when I suddenly woke up knowing how a song my characters were writing together just had to go. It was still dark outside, everyone else in the house was still asleep, but I got up, grabbed pen and paper, and wrote it all down within five minutes. Fired it off by email to my writing partner, as this was a collaborative effort, and then–being too wired to sleep–fixed myself an early breakfast, and went about in a satisfied haze for the next few hours!

A Song at Twilight is a second chance at love story, set in late Victorian England. The heroine, Sophie Tresilian, is a musical sensation, a rising star of the opera and concert stage. The hero, Robin Pendarvis, is the man she fell in love when she was only seventeen, and whom she’s never been able to forget. Four years before the story begins, they seemed headed for a happy ending, only to have their hopes for the future dashed by the revelation of a huge secret from his past. Sophie has tried to put that disappointment behind her and focus on her career. And then one night, Robin walks back into her life . . .

How did you come with the idea for this story?

Robin and Sophie were supporting characters in my first novel, Waltz with a Stranger. Their relationship was depicted in its earliest stages, and at the end of the book, they were kind of at a crossroads. Initially, I assumed that, in due time, they’d overcome whatever obstacles were and fall into each other’s arms. Then I asked myself, what if it wasn’t that simple? What if something happened to derail that, and sent them both off in different directions? And Sophie’s different direction ended up being a musical career, which was a fascinating path to explore. Professional singers like Jennie Lind and Nellie Melba were making their mark in the 19th century, redefining what it was to be an entertainer, and making the profession as a whole more respectable.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m working on several projects right now, and waiting to hear which will get the “green light” first. One is a novella about Thomas Sheridan and Amy Newbold, supporting characters in both of my novels, who are now getting a story of their own. He’s an artist–sophisticated, suave, and a bit of a reformed rake. She’s a forthright, pragmatic American heiress who’s not afraid to go after what she wants.  Engaged when the story begins, they become embroiled in a dangerous adventure when they travel to Newport, Rhode Island, for the summer season. Then there’s the story of Sophie’s brother, Harry, who falls hard for a woman of mystery, and another novel featuring all-new characters: a dysfunctional ducal family in Yorkshire who come together–contentiously–for Christmas.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I had the chance to meet several authors I admire at the most recent RWA conference in Atlanta, chief among them Mary Jo Putney, whose work I’ve enjoyed since I was in graduate school. She graciously provided a lovely blurb for A Song at Twilight. Other authors I’d enjoy meeting include Lois McMaster Bujold, who rides rocking good space opera with a one-of-a-kind hero in Miles Vorkosigan, and Elizabeth Peters, whose Amelia Peabody mysteries effortlessly blend intrigue, romance, and an irresistible period “voice.”

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Find what you love to write about. Do it regularly. Give yourself the time to develop, grow, and mature as a writer. Never give up.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?

I would love to visit Italy, especially Venice! The idea of a city with canals instead of sidewalks fascinates me no end. There’s actually a set of canals at Venice Beach in Southern California. I’ve walked along them, stood on bridges above them, dreamed about what it might be like to live in a house beside them. I can only imagine how powerful a spell the original Venetian canals must evoke on travelers.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’m eagerly anticipating Laura Lee Guhrke’s When the Marquess Met His Match, and Sherry Thomas’s The Luckiest Lady in London. Both authors write in the late Victorian/Edwardian period, as I do, and it’s such a fascinating time! I’m also looking forward to Elizabeth Chadwick’s trilogy about Eleanor of Aquitaine. And on the contemporary end of things, I’m impatiently waiting for Deborah Grabien’s Comfortably Numb, the latest in her rock ‘n’ roll mysteries featuring guitarist JP Kinkaid.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Just the following quote attributed to Emily Dickinson: “There is no frigate like a book to take you far away.” I hope readers will like where A Song at Twilight takes them. And thank you for hosting me today on Books-N-Kisses!

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.  If you could please make sure to include links to your Website, Facebook page, Twitter account or Goodread’s page I will make sure to include them in the post.  Website Facebook | TwitterGoodreads

Interview & Giveaway with Julia London

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Julia London to the blog for the first time.

Julia LondonJulia, can you please share with us a little about yourself

First, let me thank you for inviting me!  I live in Austin, Texas.  When I’m not writing, I like to get out of my cave and run or ride my bike or get Zen with yoga. I recently returned from a bike ride across Ireland and now I can’t wait to plan my next bike vacation.  My running partner is my dog, Moose, a big yellow lab who never met a piece of garbage he wouldn’t eat.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I’ve always written, but I never thought I’d be a writer—I was a public administrator.  But one day I picked up an older Iris Johansen book at a garage sale and became hooked on the romance genre. I started dreaming up stories of my own.  Thank goodness I didn’t know how difficult it was supposed to be to get published otherwise I probably wouldn’t have submitted my first manuscript, which I was lucky enough to sell.  I haven’t looked back since.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

Some people think it is interesting that I work on two books at once.  I don’t find it hard to do at all.  Usually one is historical and one is contemporary, and they are generally in different stages of production.  But I guess in all those years of public administration work, and having to juggle more than one complex project at a time, helped train my brain to be able to turn off one story and turn on another when necessary.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?9781402283871-PR

THE BRIDESMAID features Joe and Kate, two strangers forced to travel together in order to get from New York to Seattle during a super storm. Kate is traveling for her best friend’s wedding and Joe is rushing to attend a make-or-break meeting in order to secure a dream job. It’s my version of a romance set against the story of Trains, Planes and Automobiles.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I travel a lot.  This idea was born when I was stranded for 8 hours in Chicago’s O’Hare airport one stormy afternoon.  Talk about agony!  Travel delays bring out the worst in people (myself included).

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

Currently I’m finishing up the second book in my Pine River Trilogy, RETURN TO HOMECOMING RANCH, which follows HOMECOMING RANCH and is slated for publication next summer (and then again by THE LAST HOMECOMING in late 2014).  This series is about three sisters who didn’t know each other existed until they inherited a rundown ranch from their deadbeat father.  They have to make the ranch work against their private issues and those that come when you are thrust into an instant family.

I also just completed edits on my new historical, THE TROUBLE WITH HONOR, the first in a new series about four privileged sisters who try and direct the course of their fate in unconventional ways J.  It will be out in late February of next year, and will be followed by THE FALL OF GRACE next autumn.

I’m also writing another novella for Sourcebooks, tentatively titled ONE MAD NIGHT. Rival ad execs, Chelsea and Ian are stranded in their office overnight (thanks to the same storm that forced Joe and Kate together in THE BRIDESMAID).

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I would love to meet the Irish author, Marian Keyes, because I find her so interesting.  She has publicly battled debilitating depression, and I admire her for that.  And she is a very funny writer.  I would also love, love, love to meet George R. R. Martin.  This man fascinates me because as a writer he never ever pulls a punch.  I find myself thinking about what the reader wants in a book, but I think he could care less (which, if you’ve read or seen the series, you know what I am talking about).  His writing is very powerful because of it and I would love to talk to him about it.  It would be a huge fan girl moment.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

It’s like anything you want to do well—you have to learn it and practice it, day in and day out.  You learn by writing one novel after the next.  You practice it by writing something every day.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?

I have this fantasy of living in different parts of the world long enough to understand the culture and people.  I would start in Scotland or Ireland and probably never leave!

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Lianne Moriarity’s The Husband’s Secret is the book I am saving for myself when I meet my deadline.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I hope everyone enjoys my latest novella, THE BRIDESMAID, and if so they might pick up one of my other titles. I love hearing from my readers and they can let me know what they think of my books either on Facebook: www.facebook.com/JuliaLondon, Twitter: www.twitter.com/JuliaFLondon or my website and blog:  http://www.julialondon.com

Interview & Giveaway with Rebecca York

Books-n-Kisses is super excited to welcome Rebecca York to the blog for the first time.  We are talking about her newest book “Bad Nights”.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERARebecca, can you please share with us a little about yourself

RY:  I started writing romances in the early eighties  when they first became “the next big thing” and quickly found  out that I needed more of a plot to keep my interest—which is why I write romantic suspense.  Luckily, dumb little eighteen-year-old me was smart enough to marry the right guy. He loves being married to a writer, always supports my career, and loves going to conferences with me.  He takes care of all the business stuff I hate, and I keep his clothes clean, cook for him, and manage all the tasks he hates, like gardening. We’ve got two kids. One’s a Foreign Service Officer and the other is a librarian turned massage therapist.  Our three cats sit on our laps when we’re trying to work at the computer.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

RY:  I always loved making up stories, but I thought I could never be a writer because I’m dyslexic and can’t spell.  My husband takes care of that for me. I started my career writing for a local newspaper, but I did want to write fiction.  I couldn’t imagine writing anything as long as a whole book, so I began with a kids’ science fiction novel. It’s not easier to write for kids, but it’s shorter.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

RY:  I get up, feed the fish, and get myself a cup of coffee.  I read the paper and the news online, check e-mail and browse my social media sites until I realize it’s almost lunchtime, and I haven’t written anything.  Then I get to work and write ten pages.  If I haven’t done them, I may still be working until ten p.m.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

RY:  I love getting a synopsis finished.  I hate looking at a blank screen, and I like editing best.

Can you please tell us about your latest book?

Bad Nights Cover

RY:  My latest book is Bad Nights in which a hard-bitten Navy SEAL, Jack Brandt, and a woman college professor, Morgan Rains, go up against an evil militia leader and his men.   Jack and Morgan seem totally unsuited for each other, but as they escape through the woods, evading the bad guys, they come to trust and respect each other.  It’s the story of two people falling in love against a background of suspense and danger.

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

RY:  I wanted to find a plot that would lean on the talents of a Navy SEAL.  I saw two people escaping through the wilderness, having to work together to survive.  Of course, that turned out to be only part of the book. I also had to deal with how Jack and Morgan react to each other when they get back to civilization and what happens when she is kidnapped by the bad guys. By that time, Jack has fallen in love with Morgan and will do anything to save her.

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

RY:  Every since I saw the movie, The Naked Jungle, I wanted to write a book with a virgin hero  who was effective in every way except that he wasn’t quite sure how to cope with a wife.  The Naked Jungle’s set in the Amazon in the 1800’s.  To make a virgin hero plausible, I knew I couldn’t write a contemporary.  So I wrote Nightfall as science fiction romance set on a dangerous planet far in the future that was colonized only by men and their sons.  I’ve had a lot of fun writing it.  I’m editing it now, and it will be out in October.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

RY: Ken Follett, Clive Cussler, Lee Child, Mary Jo Putney, Lisa Kleypas

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

RY:  I read Ken Follett’s Key to Rebecca just as I was starting to write romantic suspense, and I loved the way he wove a romance and a suspense plot together. I’ve written a lot of werewolf books, and two of them got me into the field—Darker than You Think by Jack Williamson and The Wolf’s Hour, by, Robert McCammon.  But most of McCammon’s books were too hard-core horror for me to enjoy.  Again, his The Wolf’s Hour was a great blend of suspense and romance.  I think of my actual style as unadorned—pretty straightforward without dwelling a lot on the description of the characters.  I’m more interested in what’s going on emotionally with them than how they look.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

RY:  Okay, I’ve turned to the page where Jack and Morgan are wet and cold and have to share a sleeping bag in a cave, and he can’t stop himself from getting turned on.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

RY:  I want to read the next book in Marcus Sakey’s Brilliance series, but he hasn’t written it yet.  I also want to read the next book after The Fifth Wave, by Rick Yancey, but that’s also not out yet.  And I just bought the second and third books in Hugh Howey’s Wool series. I’ll read them next.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

RY:  Yes, if someone who was constantly bullied by her teachers for her awful spelling can become a writer, anyone can.  I love my life as a writer.   I get to make up stories for a living, and I can work at home which means I can putter around the house and garden when I want.  (I just went away to pull weeds for fifteen minutes.) I can also get up and start a pot of soup or bake lasagna while I’m in the middle of my workday.

Interview & Giveaway with Shana Galen

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome back Shana Galen to the blog.

Shana Galen PhotoCan you please share with us a little about yourself
SG: Of course! Thanks for having me back. I write adventurous historical romances set in the Regency period and featuring spies, pirates, courtesans, and the like. I live in Houston, Texas, and I write full time. I live with my husband, two cats, and my daughter.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

SG: I didn’t know that author was a profession until I was about 28. Even then I never thought of writing books for a living (and it was a good thing I didn’t expect that!). I did always have stories to tell, stories in my mind that needed to get out. If you don’t believe me, ask my little sister. I used to make her stay awake and listen to my stories when we were kids and shared a room.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?
SG: In the historical genre, I read Anna Campbell, Vanessa Kelly, Kate Noble, Robyn DeHart, Margo Maguire, Sophie Jordan, Kieran Kramer, Erin Knightley, Katharine Ashe, Theresa Romain, Miranda Neville, and Sarah MacLean. Contemporary favorites are Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Nora Roberts, and Tera Lynn Childs. Marsha Canham, Joanna Bourne, and Julie Garwood have really been the largest influences on y writing style.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?
SG: Oh, I blame it on Julie Garwood. I picked up one of her historicals and had to read them all. When I finished, I didn’t know what else to read, so I wrote my own. Yes, I would like to write in other genres, but right now I don’t have much time since I have a young child, plus I have a lot of historical books contracted.

What are some of your writing rituals?
SG: I like to write early in the day. I have difficulty focusing in the evening. If I can sit down at my computer when it’s still dark outside, sip some coffee, and write a thousand words before everyone wakes up, I’m happy.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?
SG:  TRUE SPIES is the second in the Lord and Lady Spy series. It’s about Winn and Elinor, who are married but estranged. Winn is a spy, and Elinor has no idea of his secret identity. If it sounds a bit like the movie True Lies, that was the inspiration.

How did you come with the idea for this story?
SG: Readers asked for another book in the Lord and Lady Spy series, so I started re-watching some of my favorite spy movies, and I knew True Spies was one that would translate well to the Regency period.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
SG: I’m actually writing the third in the Lord and Lady Spy series, LOVE AND LET SPY. It’s a nod to the James Bond films, except the heroine is Jane Bonde.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

SG: Here you go. In this scene Winn (Baron) is consulting with Adrian, the hero from LORD AND LADY SPY, about what to do about Elinor.

Baron raised his brows, looking skeptical.

“All you have to do is talk to her.” There. Adrian folded his arms across his chest. He felt rather proud of himself, actually. Sophia wasn’t the only one who could be sympathetic or solve others’ personal problems.

“Talk to her?” Baron said, sounding less than enthusiastic about Adrian’s advice. “And tell her what? I overheard her chatting about bedding another man?”

“I don’t know that I’d take that tack…”

“Oh, perhaps I should reveal I’m a member of the Barbican group. Even if I hadn’t pledged to keep that a secret, I can imagine her reaction when she realizes I’ve been lying to her for years.”

“Yes, well—”

“Or how about this idea? I go find this Rafe and beat the hell out of him…”

What would you be if you were not an author?

SG: A frustrated author. I’d have all these stories in my head, driving me nuts.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

SG: I was asked to read an advance copy of Vanessa Kelly’s SECRETS FOR SEDUCING A ROYAL BODYGUARD. I cannot wait to get to it.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

SG: Thank you so much for having me again!

Top Mistake You Can Make When Dating a Dragon

In her journal, Bliss Russo should have written: Note to self…Next time you’re carried out of a burning building by a hot fire fighter, remember to grab your laptop with your whole life on it!

Instead, what she really wrote (and what her horrified roommate later read) was this:

A dragon? Seriously? A dragon. I think I’ve finally met a guy who might be worth a shot, and he turns out to be some kind of circus freak.

I’d never have believed him if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. Transform? Yeah, right… Then he did it! Ack!

I keep waiting to wake up and find out this is just a crazy nightmare. Nope. I’ve pinched myself and then slapped myself for pinching myself. Still not popping out of any coma.

I’ve even wondered if I was drugged. Drake never slipped me any pills. He didn’t even bring me a beer. Nope. Nothing went into my mouth except, well…him. Heh-heh.

Hey, I wonder if dragon penis can cause hallucinations? Naw. That doesn’t make sense. Because if it does, that means he’s a dragon and I didn’t hallucinate anything but the truth.

And while we’re at it…, no wonder he said he can’t get me pregnant. We’re not even the same species! Oh, man. If we ever got married, my mother would be in seventh heaven until she learned that little fun fact. Then she’d descend to the seventh circle of hell and never be seen again.

Why do I care what my mother thinks? Haven’t I always known she means well, but…

Yeah, there are no words following that “but.” Never have been. Never will be. Some things are better left alone.

So, back to Drake. What am I supposed to do with this information? He seemed relieved after he told me, but now I’m the one who’s all jiggy. I don’t know how I’ll feel next time I look at him…if there is a next time. Didn’t he say that biker chick was probably setting the fires and he had to stop her?

I may not have known him long, but one thing I’m certain of—he won’t hit a girl. I doubt he’d even fight back unless his life depended on it, and it well might. She must be some kind of psycho to beat him up and then set fires all over the place. All because he brought me flowers? I swear, if he lives through this, I’ll ask him never to bring me flowers again.

So…as you can see, there are loads of mistakes you can make when dating a dragon. The question to ask yourself is: “Is it worth it?”

If your dragon is as hot and heroic as Drake Cameron, you may be willing to make a few mistakes.

Here is my website where you’ll find all the major buy links, reviews, blog schedule, etc.

So…what else would you like to know? Okay, there are a couple of important things. This is book 2 in the Flirting with Fangs series from Sourcebooks. Book 1 Flirting Under a Full Moon was released in April. And there will be a third book in March of 2014 called Kissing with Fangs. All take place in my beloved Boston in the Beacon Hill area.

Series arc: Anthony Cross is a vampire who believes that the different paranormal factions would get along if they simply got to know each other. So he opens a bar in Boston’s classy Beacon Hill area as a safe place for paranormals to congregate and socialize. Since immortals don’t seem to need or want wait-staff jobs, Anthony has to hire humans. The #1 rule for all paranormals is to keep humans ignorant of their existence.

But when some of the humans fall for their regulars, they could be in for the shock of their mortal lives!

Interview & Giveaway with Grace Burrowes

Books-n-Kisses is please to welcome Grace Burrowes to the blog today.

GraceBurrowes (1)Grace, can you please share with us a little about yourself
GB: I’m a lifelong reader of romances, single mom, child welfare attorney, horse girl, and oh, yeah… historical romance author.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

GB: I am still ambivalent about  being a “published” author—publication changes things, and can reduce the time available for writing—but I’ve always loved to write. Once upon a time, though, one of my keeper authors wrote a book that just did not work for me. I started my first manuscript to exorcise that disappointment, and twenty more manuscripts quickly followed.

Are you a plotter or a pantser or combo of both? And you explain the difference?
GB: I think everybody is some combination. I tend to have a general sense of what the character and dramatic arcs will be for my protagonists, but that often changes in the course of drafting the book. Mostly, I focus on coming up with a strong opening scene, one that will impel all the characters’ fears, regrets, and mayhem FORWARD.  I think of a pantser as somebody who doesn’t start writing until they have a completed outline. I envy that degree of organization.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?
GB: Hmm. There come times in EVERY book when I stare at the computer and think, “I can’t finish this one. This is tripe. This is never going to work. Who thought up this baloney and why am trying to make a book out of it?” We talk about the romance novel having a big, black moment. What a lovely idea—only one big, black moment per book! For my writing process, there are MANY big black moments.

Can you please tell us about your latest book Once Upon a Tartan?
GB: Once Upon a Tartan is the second book in my Scottish Victorian MacGregor Trilogy, which amounts to a tug of war over a child’s best interests between two people who are reluctantly falling love, though neither is the child’s parent or guardian. Toss in some betrayal, some naughty Latin, and the lovely, long Highland evenings, and much mischief ensues.

Once Upon a Tartan CoverHow did you come with the idea for this story?
GB: My editor told me early on that part of my job is to torture the hero. One of the best ways to do that is to make him choose between competing demands of honor. In this case, Tiberius Flynn, Earl of Spathfoy, must choose between the father relying on Tye to attend to family duty, and the woman Tye’s falling in love with, Hester Daniels, who hopes he’ll put honor above duty. Tough choice, for a (secretly) tender-hearted man…

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
GB: I’m working on a 2014 Christmas story for Tiberius’s sister, Lady Joan Flynn. Christmas is approaching, and all she wants is a husband—any husband, provided he’s willing to marry her immediately.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

GB:  I have met Joanna Bourne, Mary Balogh, Jennifer Ashely, Loretta Chase, JR Ward, and Julie Anne Long. I guess that leaves Judith Ivory. I’d like to meet her to tell her how very much her books means to me, how many difficulties they got me through, and how I admire her prodigious talent. I’d also like to put a personality with all those wonderful stories.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
GB: WRITE. Write more than you aspire to write, write more than you plan to write, talk about writing, or meet with other writers. Go quietly amid the noise and haste that is the pre-published author’s burden, but mostly, WRITE.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?
GB: I’ve studied French, German, Spanish, and Latin, but I’ve never been fluent in a foreign language. I’d love to spend an entire summer in Scotland. I want to get my bronze medal as a dressage rider.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
GB: Eloisa James’s Once Upon a Tower. EJ is one of my original keeper authors, and that book is pure, unalloyed GOLD.

The Bridegroom Wore Plaid Cover

What is one book everyone should read before they die?
GB: Well. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. This very readable little tome busts the myth that scientific progress is rational, and explains why so often truth, particularly a new truth, does not carry the day. In these interesting times, that explanation is a comfort, as is the realization that truth does eventually win out, though it can take a generation or two for the paradigm shift to take hold.

What is your favorite time of year and why?
GB: Autumn. I always perk up when the weather cools off, the light gets sharper, and the days shorter.

Who is your Celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet him/her?
GB: The Dalai Lama. If I met him, I would thank him for consistently speaking reason and kindness in a world that can be unreasonable and unkind.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

GB: THANKS!!!

Honor or happiness—he can’t have both.

Tiberius Flynn may be every inch an English lord, but smart, headstrong beauty Hester Daniels has no use for his high-handed ways–no matter how handsome, charming, or beguiling he is. They only see eye to eye in caring about the feisty little girl who is under their protection.

Tiberius’s haughty insistence that his wealthy estate in England is a better place for the child than her beloved, rundown Scotland home sparks Hester’s fierce protectiveness, and the battle lines are drawn.
