ONe hot secondTITLE: One Hot Second
CHARACTERS: Parker & Chandler
AUTHOR: Stacy Gail
PUBLICATION DATE: 01/01/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Parker Radclyffe is up against a wall. Thorne Mansion, the mysterious Italianate castle she’s come to Texas to restore, isn’t the problem. No matter how intriguing the relic is, it’s merely an ember compared to the blazing magnetism of its owner, Chandler Thorne.
When his family mansion burned down, Chandler had to watch over a hundred years of proud history go up in smoke. After more than a year, he finally has everything in place to rebuild, including a renowned conservation architect to oversee the restoration. But when he lays eyes on Parker he realizes he’s gotten more than he paid for. Maybe more than he can handle.
Parker is a military brat who never sits still long enough to get burned. Chandler is her opposite, a man with deep roots and deeper family secrets. It won’t be easy to find the common ground it takes to build a home together, but Chandler is a thorn in every sense. He plans to stick with Parker until she sees that love is more than worth the risk.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is another really good story by Gail. I have enjoyed her other stories and enjoyed this one as well. Is it my favorite? Probably not but it was still enjoyable… and hot.

Parker is a great. Someone I would like to be friends with. She can be pretty funny. Chandler is blown away by Parker and I can understand why. They really have a connection that sizzles. I really enjoyed everyone in the story – yes except the Mayor who no one seems to like for obvious reasons.

Parker and Chandler would be a couple I would enjoy going on a double date with.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts In The Lost we pick up where we left off with Grif & Kit trying to solve the mystery of “Who killed Griffin Shaw”. But along the way they are sent on a wild ride of ups and downs and tests to their very fragile relationship.

This was another good book by Vicki. This book was filled with a lot more emotional ups and downs for me. It made me love and hate Grif just a little more with each page. But I will say the very last chapter just flat out broke my heart.

If you are interested in r reading this series you really need to start from the beginning. Starting here will just be confusing. On to the conclusion of the Celestial Blues Trilogy. I know what I am hoping for but we will see what Vicki has in store for me.

Natasha reviews Fireborn by Keri Arthur

firebornTITLE: Fireborn
SERIES #: Souls of Fire #1
CHARACTERS: Emberly, Rory, Sam and Jackson
AUTHOR: Keri Arthur
PUBLICATION DATE: 7/1/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
From New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur comes a brand new series featuring heroine Emberly Pearson—a phoenix capable of taking on human form, and cursed with the ability to foresee death…
Emberly has spent a good number of her many lives trying to save humans. So when her prophetic dreams reveal the death of Sam, a man she once loved, she does everything in her power to prevent that from happening. But in saving his life, she gets more than she bargained for.
Sam is working undercover for the Paranormal Investigations Team, and those who are trying to murder him are actually humans infected by a plague-like virus, the Crimson Death—a by-product of a failed government experiment that attempted to identify the enzymes that make vampires immortal. Now, all those infected must be eliminated.
But when Emberly’s boss is murdered and his irreplaceable research stolen, she needs to find the guilty party before she goes down in flames…

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts I am in love with all of Keri Arthur’s work so I could not wait to read this new series! I love the whole idea of the Phoenix and am super excited this series will focus on them. Emberly is a strong female lead, and I enjoy her interactions very much. You can see she’s a genuinely good person who was handed a super bad lot in her many lifetimes. I adore Rory, and love their interactions and connections together. It reminded me a lot of the comradery we saw in the Riley Jensen series! The love interests: Sam and Jackson. I HATE SAM! Let’s just get that out there. I don’t buy the whole wounded animal persona; he’s a flat out jerk and doesn’t deserve an ounce of the emotion he gets from Emberly. The constant pull and attraction she has to him, even with the horrendous things he’s done is frustrating. I really could do without that, it just makes me want to slap them both! Now Jackson, that’s a great character. I love his personality and overall ability to brighten up the pages. I hope he sticks around in the series for a while. Some situations and phrases seemed repetitive but overall the story was interesting and I’ll follow the series.

Kelly reviews The Taken by Vicki Pettersson

The TakenTITLE: The Taken
SERIES #: Celestial Blues #1
CHARACTERS: Griffin Shaw & Katherine “Kit” Craig
AUTHOR: Vicki Pettersson
PUBLICATION DATE: June 12, 2012
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Griffin Shaw used to be a PI, but that was back when gumshoes hoofed the streets . . . and he was still alive. Fifty years later, he’s an angel, but that doesn’t make him a saint. One small mistake has altered fate, and now he’s been dumped back onto the mortal mudflat to collect another soul—Katherine “Kit” Craig, a journalist whose latest investigation is about to get her clipped.

Bucking heavenly orders, Grif refuses to let the sable-haired siren come to harm. Besides, protecting her offers a chance to solve the mystery of his own unsolved murder—and dole out some overdue payback for the death of his beloved wife, Evie.

Joining forces, Kit and Grif’s search for answers leads beyond the blinding lights of the Strip into the dark heart of an evil conspiracy. But a ruthless killer determined to destroy them isn’t Grif’s biggest threat. His growing attraction to Kit could cost them both their lives, along with the answer to the haunting question of his long afterlife .

REVIEW:
Giffin Shaw has been stuck in the past for a very long time, 50 years a long time. But when his latest Take is not ready to leave. Grif breaks the rules for her and changes his whole world. Now Grif finds himself back on earth and having to witness his next Take be murdered.

Kit is a by the facts reporter who lives in a world of her own. But when her best friend is murdered Kit will stop at nothing to find out who did it. Only problem is the ones who did it are not out for Kit.

This is not my normal genre of reading but I did enjoy The Taken. There is a lot going on in this new world that Vicki has created. I found the world to be slightly confusing to keep up with all of it, but as I read on the world started to make since. I found that I liked Grif and Kit. I loved learning what a rockabilly lifestyle was (all new to me). Maybe because it was the first book but both Kit & Grif are a little stand offish. But even with that I am looking forward to book 2 The Lost and the continuation of Grif & Kit’s story.

Kelly reviews Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh

shield of winterTITLE: Shield of Winter

CHARACTERS: Vasic & Ivy Jane
AUTHOR: Nalini Singh
NARRATOR: Angela Dawe
PUBLICATION DATE: June 3, 2014
RUN TIME: 15 Hours & 46 Minutes
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N | Audible

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Assassin. Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life.

For if the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…

Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to stifle her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she’ll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts

We all know (that is if you have read the first 12 books) that the Psy are a very cold race. They like everything perfect. There is no room for flaws of any kind. Flaws have been dealt with swiftly and harshly over the last 100 years. But with the fall of Silence in (bk 12 Heart of Obsidian) the Psy race is now fighting a new killer. One that does not care who or what stands in it’s way. There are two ways to save the Psy race: 1. Cut out the affected and kill millions or 2. Hope that the E-Psy will awake in time to stop choice number 1.

As always Nalini writes a story that sucks me in and makes me not want to leave no matter how bad it gets at time. Vasic and Ivy’s story is both amazingly filled with hope and heartbreakingly sad at the same time. I honestly had my doubts on Vasic based off prior books. He is the perfect Psy in all ways. Ivy Jane was new to me, but I loved her the minute she stepped on the page. These two are just flat out amazing together. Yes, I laughed, cried and wanted to kill the leaders of the Psy from 100 years ago. I want to say so much but don’t want to spoil it for you. Just know the manuals are very important!!! 🙂
I did listen to this book on audio as I have done with all of Nalini’s Psy-Changeling books. Ms. Dawe does a great job again with the voices of each character. My only issue was that the audio file I had seemed to go in and out. At times it seemed muffled at time. I am not sure what it was. But even with this I loved the story.

in your cornerTITLE: In Your Corner
SERIES #: Redemption #2
CHARACTERS: Amanda & Jake
AUTHOR: Sarah Castille
PUBLICATION DATE: 07/01/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
“You have to go. I won’t be able to control myself. I’ve wanted you so bad for so long and after I’ve been in the cage…I can’t think straight.” He gives a guttural groan and his fist clenches on my hip.
Primitive. Primal. His need speaks to me. I tighten my grip on his neck and rock up to kiss him. He takes over. His kiss is hard and demanding.
“Mine.” His voice is raw, savage and for a moment I truly believe he may lose control.
He rules in the ring
Two years ago, Jake and Amanda were going hot and heavy. But when Jake wanted more, Amanda walked away. Jake immersed himself in mixed martial arts, living life on the edge. But that didn’t dull the pain of Amanda’s rejection-until a chance encounter throws them together.
A high-powered lawyer, Amanda was a no-strings-attached kind of girl. But two years after her breakup with Jake, she still hasn’t found anyone who gets her heart pumping the way he did. And then he shows up in her boardroom, hot as sin and needing help…
But can he rule her heart?
Jake is darker, sexier, and impossible to resist. As their chemistry builds, Amanda’s not sure if she can stay in control, or if she’s finally willing to let him claim her body and soul.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts This is the second in the series and I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed it. WOW Jake is just so alpha he can burn you alive. Amanda is the perfect person for him to be with it. They compliment each other so well.

I wasn’t sure if I could enjoy this as much as the first in the series but this is hands down better. The problems the characters have are real. They are intense and they are true. Jake is darker and sexier as the synopsis says and Amanda is real and someone I would want to be friends with.

I truly enjoyed this story and can’t wait for the next one in the series.

Jennifer reviews Return To Homecoming Ranch by Julia London

return to homecoming ranchTITLE: Return to Homecoming Ranch
SERIES #: Pine River #2
CHARACTERS: Libby Tyler, Sam Winters
AUTHOR: Julia London
PUBLICATION DATE: 7/22/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Curly-haired Libby Tyler never stops smiling…until her beloved boyfriend suddenly forces her out of their home and away from his adoring kids. When she learns he dumped her for his flighty ex-wife, Libby’s sadness turns to fury—and she very publicly smashes his truck with a golf club, earning herself a trip to a mental health center for some “rest.”

Handsome, hazel-eyed deputy Sam Winters has been sober for two years. Afraid of backsliding, he lives in the mountains and keeps his distance from people. Yet he never forgot Libby, his former colleague at the sheriff’s office whose charm and cheerfulness always warmed his days.

Now Libby’s back, ignoring the townspeople’s whispers (and her ex’s restraining order) while desperately trying to make Homecoming Ranch a successful event destination. She keeps causing trouble for Sam, but he finds her smile more beautiful than ever…and his touch gives her thrills she’s never felt. Could these two lost souls mend each other’s broken hearts?

REVIEW: The thing that I loved about this book was that Libby and Sam were two kindred spirits that were doing their best to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives in Pine River. Libby Tyler was heartbroken when she was kicked to the curb by her ex-boyfriend and had a difficult time moving on from the life that she helped create with him and his children. Feeling lost and alone, she finds herself driving by his house when she knows that she needs to stay away and move on. Sam Winters is a recovering alcoholic who has always had eyes for Libby and Sam soon finds himself trying to keep her out of trouble with her ex-boyfriend.

Libby has never known what her friendship has meant to Sam, especially during the dark times recovering from his addiction. I loved how Sam was there to help Libby, even when she didn’t want it and to be the friend that she needed when the whole town though that she had lost her mind. They were great together as a couple and that Sam showed Libby that true love had always been right in front of her, she just had to take his hand and grab it.
Return to Homecoming Ranch is a sweet, delightful romance that you just can’t put down. I enjoyed Libby and Sam’s story, as well as getting updates about what is happening in the lives of previous characters from the first book in the series, Homecoming Ranch. Ms. London has written such a lovely romantic tale about two broken hearts that finally find the love that they were searching for and I can’t wait to see what is in store for these characters in the future.

Jennifer reviews Better Homes and Hauntings by Molly Harper

better homesTITLE: Better Homes and Hauntings
CHARACTERS: Deacon Whitney, Nina Linden
AUTHOR: Molly Harper
PUBLICATION DATE: 6/24/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate—he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in nineteenth-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo.”

But Nina shows no signs of being scared away, even as she experiences some unnerving apparitions herself. And as the two of them work closely together to restore the mansion’s faded glory, Deacon realizes that he’s found someone who doesn’t seem to like his fortune more than himself—while Nina may have finally found the one man she can trust with her bruised and battered heart.

But something on the island doesn’t believe in true love…and if Nina and Deacon can’t figure out how to put these angry spirits to rest, their own love doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts I loved, loved this book! I have always been a big fan of Molly Harper and the fact that this book is about a haunted house is an added bonus for me. Nina Linden is down on her luck trying to build her landscaping business when she gets the job of a lifetime helping to renovate the grounds of The Crane’s Nest, which is owned by software mogul, Deacon Whitney. Nina joins a group of business-minded people set on bringing the decrepit mansion back into its former glory but each of them begin to experience things that have them believing that the house actually may be haunted.
Molly Harper is such a talented writer because each of her books are filled with romance, mystery and a dash of snarky humor that will definitely keep you entertained. I loved Nina, Deacon, Cindy and Jake in Better Homes and Hauntings and couldn’t get enough of these characters. The dialogue between these characters had me laughing out loud and wanting to find the secrets of The Crane’s Nest right along with them. Nina and Deacon were so cute together since they were both shy people that had a lot in common if they just gave it a chance. I felt sorry for Cindy for part of this book because she liked Jake and he was just an idiot that needed to be hit over the head for not remembering her from his past. I love all of Ms. Harper’s books and Better Homes and Hauntings has now become a favorite of mine. Can’t wait for her next book because I know that it will be a fun and entertaining ride.

Kimberly reviews What A Lady Craves by Ashlyn Macnamara

what a lady cravesTITLE: What A Lady Craves
SERIES #: The Eton Boys Trilogy #1
CHARACTERS: Henrietta & Alexander
AUTHOR: Ashlyn Macnamara
PUBLICATION DATE: 08/12/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Henrietta Upperton is about to marry Alexander Sanford, when he rushes off to India to salvage his family’s fortune. Then comes the devastating news that he has wed another. Eight agonizing years later, a storm washes Alexander ashore—injured, widowed, and hunted—and one glimpse of his ruggedly handsome face reawakens the desire Henrietta thought she had buried deep inside. Her body still yearns for his touch, but she’s determined not let him wound her again . . . not this time.
For Alexander, honor always comes first. But only now does he realize that when given the choice between two virtuous deeds, he picked the wrong one. On the run with his life in tatters and a pair of daughters in tow, Alexander burns for Henrietta. He knows he does not deserve forgiveness. And yet he longs to wrap his arms around her warm body once again. What’s more, he is sure the lady craves the same.

REVIEW:
I had the hardest time with this book. I really never cared about either of the main characters. Alexander is just a jerk who thinks he does everything for honor and even when he hurts others with his actions he doesn’t see it as dishonor. And Henrietta just seems desperate or something. Why she would allow Alexander back into her life I have no clue.
I started off feeling saddened for Henrietta but right off the bat she keeps the box from Alexander when he has lost everything and I guess I never recovered for her keeping it from him. Mind you I never liked Alexander either. I really just wanted to slap them both and tell them to leave each other alone and never talk again. But I guess they deserve each other if they are willing to get back together after everything that has happened.

4.25 Hearts Beau is the youngest of the Chiasson’s brothers. Wild Need is book 3 in Donna Grant’s Chiasson series. And I believe that each story has gotten better and better. I loved Beau and Davena’s story. My only grip about this story is how long it took for Beau & Davena to come together. But it was necessary (you will have to read to find out). Oh and a little surprise at the end of the book had me saying “Look out world. Everything just changed.” I can’t wait for the next installment in this novella series.

Bound by Danger is the second book in Katie Reus’ news Deadly Ops series. Bound by Danger is every bit as good as Targeted (bk 1). From page one there is not stop action. And even in the middle of a life and death situation Katie is able to let our hero & heroine have a great love story.

If you have not started this series and you love romance suspense I would suggest picking up a copy of Bound by Danger and Targeted.
