Kimberly reviews Blaze Of Winter by Elisabeth Barrett

Blaze Of WinterTITLE: Blaze Of Winter
SERIES #: Star Harbor #2
CHARACTERS: Avery & Theo
AUTHOR: Elisabeth Barrett
PUBLICATION DATE: 09/10/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Frustrated with her job in Boston, social worker Avery Newbridge welcomes the opportunity to reassess her life when family asks her to help manage the Star Harbor Inn. Trying to figure out her future is overwhelming enough, but she doesn’t count on distraction in the form of one Theo Grayson, the gorgeous, green-eyed author who she knows is trouble from the moment he saunters into the inn.

Not only does he have a talent for writing swashbuckling adventures, but Theo also has a soft spot for big-hearted damsels in distress, especially a woman who’s great at helping everyone—except herself. Avery’s demons challenge him, but for desire this hot, he isn’t backing down. With every kiss and heated whisper Theo promises her his heart . . . if only Avery is willing to open up and accept it.

REVIEW:
3.5 Stars This was my fault. I read the stories out of order and honestly it kind of ruined (for lack of a better word) this story for me. I liked Theo is book one so I wanted to read his story and Avery is an interesting character too but for some reason reading them out of order just kind of blew it for me.

Now I do know these books do not have to be read in order. They can stand alone just knowing that that the other brothers have their stories too so why I had a hard time I just don’t know. That being said Theo and Avery’s story is great. Theo is adorable. Avery keeps your attention too.

I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a good romance with hunky brothers for each season of the year.

Natasha reviews Pure by Julianna Baggott

PureTITLE: Pure
SERIES #: Pure Trilogy #1
CHARACTERS: Pressia, Partridge, Bradwell, Lyda & El Capitan
AUTHOR: Julianna Baggott
PUBLICATION DATE: 2/8/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
We know you are here, our brothers and sisters . . .
Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run.

Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash . . .
There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it’s his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her.
When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again.

REVIEW: I loved this book! I happen to come across this author and the synopsis intrigued me. I’ve read many post apocalypse books, and many YA novels. I have to say, this author did it right. I was so pleasantly relieved that even though this is YA the characters all had common sense and were not frustratingly juvenile. Having multiple character viewpoints can be dangerous in books. Things can get confusing and the back and forth frustrating. I did not have that problem with this book. I loved being able to experience each characters viewpoint: Pressia, Partridge and Lyda. They each added so much to the story. Though curiously we didn’t get a viewpoint from Bradwell… Every character in this book has a history and is a necessity to the overall story, even El Capitan and Helmet! I was able to see some of the story twists coming early on, but others took me completely by surprise! I love being surprised! This book has everything: action, emotional turmoil, government plots, love and loss. It was a great start to this series and I already have book two downloaded. I’m very excited to get started!

Kimberly reviews Longing by Jamie K Schmidt

LongingTITLE: Longing
SERIES #: Club Inferno #2
CHARACTERS: Anya & Clint
AUTHOR: Jamie K. Schmidt
PUBLICATION DATE: 09/02/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Reeling from a disastrous love affair, model and budding fashion designer Anya Litton needs a temporary refuge, a place to lick her wounds and plan her next career move. At Club Inferno, where seductively chic men and women indulge their most intimate fantasies, she can mix business with unimaginable pleasure. Anya quickly connects with club Dom Clint Reyes, who unleashes Anya’s deepest longings over nights of burning passion.
Clint is a master at taking submissives to the heights of pleasure in Club Inferno’s opulent private dungeons. But it’s Anya who has Clint begging for more when the woman of his dreams becomes his eager partner in exploring the limits of desire. As their relationship ignites into an erotic contest of wills—and a jealous rival plots against them both—Clint prepares to fight for a future with Anya. In this complicated dance, the wrong move could end it all . . . and taking control means total surrender.

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts I really enjoyed this story. It is the second in the series but you do not need to have read the first at all. In fact Max and Mallory are only mentioned in passing a few times. So feel free to pick this up without having read the first… but then the first was really good so you might want to pick that one up too.
Now about this book. First about Clint. What a sweet guy. He has dreams and while he enjoys the kinky life it is not his whole world. In fact he wants to own his own place and fall in love. He wants to be more than a stripper and Dom and he finds that with Anya. I really adored Clint. However I really can’t imagine that he is a Dom in the full sense of the word. I really can’t recall anything he did that was Dom worthy. Yes he liked to be a little controlling but he didn’t Dom Anya. He understands her limits (which are plenty) and never pushes her to go beyond them.
Now to the best part of this story. ANYA! Let me say a hardy HELL YES to the author. She really pulled Anya off perfectly. I actually went and looked up a picture of Schmidt to see if she was a big girl because she really nailed the feeling us big girls have. The feeling of being too heavy to sit on a guys lap, will he laugh at her when she gets unclothed because her jeans hold in a lot, why would a guy that looks like Clint fall for a woman who looks like her, etc. Her feels are all ones that any big girl has had. Anya is a plus size model and while confident in her beauty to walk the runway as a plus size model when it comes to being an everyday woman she loses some of that confidence. And then she hears people call her fat and she crumbles. But somehow she picks herself back up. I LOVED ANYA and hope to grow up to be her someday (ok I am in my 40s so it is probably a lost cause but still).
Wonderful romance with a touch of erotica but not really any BDSM. And a wonderful couple who deserves to be cheered from an author who deserves praise.

Natasha reviews Beyond Love by Barbara J Duell

loveTITLE: Beyond Love
CHARACTERS: Michael McCall & Richard Hampton
AUTHOR: Barbara J. Duell
PUBLICATION DATE: Spring 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
He’d only planned to run away from home, but after eight-year-old David Hampton is almost run over by a car in downtown Sausalito and rescued by a beautiful lady with a man’s name, his plans change. All he’s ever wanted was a Mom and decides Michael McCall is the Mom he wants. All he has to do is convince his dad, and maybe Ms. McCall.
It should be easy, but unlike stories with happy endings, this is not a fairytale; this is real. When Professor Michael McCall and Dr. Richard Hampton meet, the sparks from their first encounter ignite into an instant desire so powerful it rivals the intensity of the fire that nearly destroyed the city across the bay. Their path to happy-ever-after will demand that they travel beyond their lust and the heat of their passion — a journey steeped with pain, a constant reminder of love given and lost — a journey where the past must be put away, freeing them to find the courage to reach BEYOND LOVE.

REVIEW:
This book was a little difficult for me to get into at first. I like the idea behind the story; it’s a very sweet love story. However, I found it difficult to connect with either of the main characters – especially Michael. She is definitely an aggressive, confrontational, strong personality. I was hoping I’d get to see her reign in her temper a little more throughout the book and learn to adapt to others around her. I also wish we’d gotten a little more depth of her character. She has such an amazing story to tell and I really wanted to dig deeper into her and create that connection. Richard was a good character. He had so many flaws, but all you can do is laugh sometimes at how oblivious he is to the people and things surrounding him. He was just as flawed as Michael so they were definitely perfect for each other in that regard. He was also vey sweet. I’m happy that this book allowed us to read from each character’s perspective – I really enjoy knowing what is going on inside each character’s head rather than first person accounts. Unfortunately sometimes the transitions between character perspectives was not always clear and I found myself confused at times trying to decipher which character I was reading at the moment. Overall, the book was enjoyable and I’m happy I read it. I’m very excited to see what other stories we can look forward to from Barbara!

Jennifer’s Review of Once More, My Darling Rogue

Review (5 Stars): Drake Darling has never been able to forget the events of his childhood and even with all the success that he has achieved, those memories are never far from his thoughts.  Lady Ophelia Lyttleton has known Drake for years and has always treated him as though he was beneath her.  The two verbally spar with one another every chance they get and it has become a game to see who will win first.  One night, Drake finds a young woman on the side of the river, dirty, bruised and has no idea who she is or how she got there.  What surprises Drake the most is that the young woman is none other than Lady Ophelia and she has no memories of Drake whatsoever.  As a punishment for the way that she has treated him all these years, Drake tells Lady Ophelia that she is his servant and makes her spend her time doing servant duties.  As the days pass, Drake finds himself falling for the new Lady Ophelia and dreads the day when her memories return, knowing that she will hate him even more for what he has done. But Lady Ophelia is falling for Drake as well and maybe this chance at love will finally help melt her deeply protected heart of ice.

I absolutely fell in love with Drake Darling in Once More, My Darling Rogue.  He was a charming man who couldn’t understand why Lady Ophelia hated him so much when he never did anything to hurt her.  In a way, he felt that he deserved the verbal abuse because of his torrid beginnings but Lady Ophelia was downright cruel, mean and vindictive whenever Drake was around.  I loved when she became Phee, the woman with no memories, who was sweet, kind and a crusader against any injustice in the world. I didn’t agree with Drake for making Phee believe that she was a servant as retaliation for all the things that she had done to him, but if he hadn’t, he would have never seen the amazing woman she could become.

Drake and Lady Ophelia were two very interesting characters because they both believed that they were unworthy of love because of events that happened in their childhoods.  They were haunted by their past and were finally able to heal their broken spirits by finding love in each others arms.    This love story brought me to tears when I discovered both of their secrets and to what lengths Drake went to make amends for what he had done to Lady Ophelia when she had lost her memories.  Such a beautiful story of love and forgiveness between two emotionally scarred people who deserved to find love and found it in the most unlikely of places. This is one of my favorite books this year and I am looking forward to reading more from this talented writer.

Kimberly reviews Beauty’s Beast by Amanda Ashley

beautys beastTITLE: Beauty’s Beast
CHARACTERS: Kristine & Erik
AUTHOR: Amanda Ashley
PUBLICATION DATE: 09/02/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Beauty
Fair of face and figure, Kristine is young, innocent, pure. Yet she has been condemned to the gallows for killing a man. The only one who can save her is a lord so infamous that some say he is the son of the Devil himself…
And the Beast
Erik Trevayne is called the Demon Lord of Hawksbridge Castle, but few know of the curse he lives under. Or the terrifying changes slowly gnawing away at his humanity. When he weds her, all he wants of Kristine is a son. But when he beds her, a wild hope is born—that love that can tame even the most monstrous of beasts…

REVIEW:
This was a DNF for me which doesn’t happen very often. Usually if I can’t get into a book I might skim over certain sections but still manage to finish the book but not this one. I was about 20% into the book and just couldn’t go on.
First I can’t stand Kristine. She is just so dull and has no gumption to her. She just takes the way Erik uses her and leaves her room and still manages to think that she needs to learn to love him. Why? And Erik while understandable is just a jerk. Nothing about either of them makes me want to care about them.
This is not the Beauty and The Beast we grew up on. I didn’t really expect it to be but it is so slow moving with nothing going on that I just didn’t care about learning more of the differences. I would say more but not much more I can say when I couldn’t read anymore at 20%. I think this is a love it or hate it kind of book. Nothing in between.

SINsational Saturday Series: Robyn Peterman’s Hot Damned Series

 Fashionably Dead

Hot Damned #1

Vampyres don’t exist. They absolutely do not exist.

At least I didn’t think they did ‘til I tried to quit smoking and ended up Undead. Who in the hell did I screw over in a former life that my getting healthy equates with dead?

Now I’m a Vampyre. Yes, we exist whether we want to or not. However, I have to admit, the perks aren’t bad. My girls no longer jiggle, my ass is higher than a kite and the latest Prada keeps finding its way to my wardrobe. On the downside, I’m stuck with an obscenely profane Guardian Angel who looks like Oprah and a Fairy Fighting Coach who’s teaching me to annihilate like the Terminator.

To complicate matters, my libido has increased to Vampyric proportions and my attraction to a hotter than Satan’s underpants killer rogue Vampyre is not only dangerous . . . it’s possibly deadly. For real dead. Permanent death isn’t on my agenda. Avoiding him is my only option. Of course, since he thinks I’m his, it’s easier said than done. Like THAT’S not enough to deal with, all the other Vampyres think I’m some sort of Chosen One.

Holy Hell, if I’m in charge of saving an entire race of blood suckers, the Undead are in for one hell of a ride.

Fashionably Dead Down Under

Hot Damned #2

Welcome to Hell.

Literally.

The Hell where the Prince of Darkness is hotter than Hades, Hell Hounds smell like brownies and the Seven Deadly Sins are addicted to Facebook… Not to mention the soundtrack in the Underworld is Journey. For real.

I should have known no good could come from offing my parents in the space of twenty minutes no matter how psychotic and evil they were…

Now I find out my family tree includes almost every deity and mythological being alive while Ethan, the one and only love of my undead life has a limited time down under before he turns to dust. In the land of Sin, you’d think I’d get some nookie time with my man, but no. Baby Demons, cousins and grandparents put the kibosh on that. Blue balls are the new normal. What the hell does a half-Vampyre Half-Demon have to do to catch a break?

Apparently find a freakin’ sword, calm Mother Nature’s unmedicated mood swings and make sure Mister Rogers keeps his sticky fingers to himself during weekly poker with the Devil.

And I have three days to do it.

By all that’s unholy, I thought Ethan’s Vampyre family was crazy…Trust me, they have nothing on the Demons.

Hell on Heels

Hot Damned #3

Where does a Demon go when she gets deported from Hell?

Kentucky. Eden, Kentucky to be more specific—where nothing is exactly as it seems.

My name is Dixie. I’m a Demon—a lousy Demon. I’m a twenty-one year old virgin and I have a battery operated boyfriend. My magic is iffy at best and downright dangerous at worst. Leaving Hell to represent my race is not high on my list of things to do.

Hell was exact. Hell was simple. All I want to do is get to home base with the hotter than Hades Demon of my dreams and work on my dark side so Satan, my dad, will get off my ass.

Instead I end up in Kentucky looking for the Balance of Chaos, avoiding pole dancing classes with Mother Nature and finding out my invisible friend is a silver skinned destructive weather pattern.

And if that isn’t craptastic enough, the damn Sword of Death is missing again and who ever has it wants the King of the Underworld dead. Seriously.

With new powers emerging daily, keeping my Demon side, horniness and general disgust under wraps doesn’t make it any easier to fit in with the humans. Thankfully my priorities are in line; get laid…save world…try not to blow up kitchen appliances…and get laid again. I was ready to rumble.

All I want to do is go back to Hell, but with the balance of good and evil in my hands, I’m stuck in the garden of Eden. Oh well, what the Hell. Someone has to save the world before there’s no world left to save. Might as well be me.

Kimberly reviews The Homecoming by Robyn Carr

SERIES #: Thunder Point #6
CHARACTERS: Iris & Seth
AUTHOR: Robyn Carr
PUBLICATION DATE: 08/26/14

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
At the age of nineteen, Seth Sileski had everything. A superb athlete and scholar, handsome and popular, he was the pride of Thunder Point. Destined for greatness, he lost it all in a terrible accident that put an end to his professional football career when it had barely begun. The people in his hometown have never forgotten what might have been.
Seth has come to terms with the turns his life has taken. But now he’s been presented with an opportunity to return home and show his father—and the people of Thunder Point—he’s become a better, humbler version of his former self.
Winning over his father isn’t the only challenge. Seth must also find a way to convince his childhood neighbor and best friend, Iris McKinley, to forgive him for breaking her heart. With his homecoming, will Seth be able to convince the town, his family and especially Iris that he’s finally ready to be the man who will make them all proud?

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts I’m not sure why but this had a different feel to me than the others in the series. While I enjoyed it and the story was good something was just different. There is a lot happening in this story not just with the couple but with the background players as well. Seth and Iris have an interesting dynamic. Having been friends before the connection is supposed to be there and mostly it is but it seemed to me to not be a “hot love match” but more like friends who fall in love after being together for so long. But I have to say that is a nice change to the alpha male running to the rescue of the damsel all the time.

Iris is an interesting character. She seems love sick and some points but then other times is strong and independent. Seth has been through a bunch of stuff including almost dieing but still has a sweet sense about him. Funny the character I liked the best was Robbie who has the sweetest of hearts and maybe we might get a story of him finally getting a happy ending (but I doubt it).

Kimberly reviews No Limits by Lori Foster

no limitsTITLE: No Limits
SERIES #: Ultimate #1
CHARACTERS: Cannon & Yvette
AUTHOR: Lori Foster
PUBLICATION DATE: 08/26/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A surprise inheritance reunites a mixed martial arts fighter with the woman he’s never forgotten in the first in a smoldering new series from New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster…
Cannon Colter is quintessential hero material: chiseled jawline, shredded body—the works. He’s also the guy who rescued Yvette Sweeny from kidnappers, only to put an end to her romantic dreams. These days, she’s older, smarter, determined to face whatever life throws her way. Even the prospect of sharing a house and business with Cannon.
Cannon knew Yvette wanted him three years ago. But she was young—and some things are worth waiting for. Thrown together by her grandfather’s legacy, he realizes how deep Yvette’s scars really go, and how much danger lurks in their quiet town. As pent-up desire explodes between them, protecting her becomes the only fight that matters. And he’ll break all the rules to do it…

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts I absolutely loved this story. First I enjoyed the writing very much. It really held my attention and seeing as I stated up way too late I didn’t want to put it down until I was done. I really loved Cannon. Besides he is a sweet guy there is something about him that really attracts the reader. He is not the alpha male that most MMA fighters are portrayed as. He is a protective possessive guy but he is such so loving and sweet. He is called The Saint because of the way he treats the ladies with respect and it really comes through in the writing. He really doesn’t ever come across as being a jerk to any woman even when he would rather not have her attention. I liked how he was willing to take the time Yvette needed. He is just wonderful.

Now Yvette, well I ended up liking her (mostly). She has been through some horrible things and you can understand why she is skittish about the world around her but there were some things that didn’t sit right. Yes she is skittish but she almost seems naive sometimes. But that being said I would be her friend. What she does have is gumption. She knows she needs to step up sometimes and hold her head up high and she does. I can appreciate that about her.

I enjoyed the background characters as well. Armie is such a jerk sometimes and yet the sweetest guy at others. The care he shows to Yvette is so adorable. And I can not wait to read his and Rissy’s story.

This is a great new series by Foster and I am so looking forward to the rest of the stories to come.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
When adrenaline runs high, so does the force of desire…
For Shay Appleton, it’s love at first sight when a gorgeous stray dog is brought into the animal shelter where she works. She just knows he’ll make a terrific watch dog—and with an abusive ex who won’t let go, she needs all the protection she can get. But Shay never suspected that her new pet is actually a trained police K-9 named Bogart—until Bogart’s even more gorgeous, human partner shows up on her doorstep.
Officer James Cannon is one tall, strong alpha male who’s convinced that Shay stole his dog. But once he gets closer to the suspect, he realizes that this stubborn, independent woman not only needs a guard dog, she needs James as well. It seems that someone from her past is stalking her, and threatening her life. When danger meets desire, will James risk his career and his best friend…to protect the woman who’s stolen his heart?

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts I really enjoyed this story. I read it in one sitting and couldn’t get enough. I loved James. What an incredibly sweet and caring yet possessive and protective guy. He is the perfect boyfriend. And Shay needs just that. Boy that girl has so much going on I can’t believe the author will be able to come up with something else in the next story. Talk about a bad couple of weeks! It did get to be a little much at some points but Shay takes it on and you just want to cheer for her. How James doesn’t want to just run away is beyond question but he doesn’t, he holds on tighter and I adored him for that.

And Bogart. Oh I am in love. So many stories with dogs have them as a background character who barely makes a scene but not Bogart. He is a full on part of this story. He has such a personality. He smiles, he gives mischievous looks and protects with everything he has and yet pull out a ball and he is all puppy.

This is such a great romance and yet does have a bit of suspense to it too. I think any fan of romance, suspense or of dogs will love this story. I did!

stone cold loverTITLE: Stone Cold Lover
SERIES #: Gargoyles #2
CHARACTERS: Felicity & Spar
AUTHOR: Christine Warren
PUBLICATION DATE: 08/26/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A prominent art restorer, Felicity is more than game to help a friend track down an obscure statue in Montreal. But when “Fil” finds it, she’s taken by surprise at how drawn she is to this statue. Attracted to it in a way a girl shouldn’t lust for a stone gargoyle, she revists it at night, longing to feel its embrace. Little does Fil know, her desire for this stone cold beast is about to heat up a notch.
Locked in stone for centuries, Spar has slept, waiting for when a human would need him. When he is awoken, Spar is taken aback to find that a human female needs his help. A very sexy woman who’s about to be the victim of a cultist attack. Saving and leaving her should be no problem. But as more questions arise, Spar knows that he cannot rest until Fil is safe in his arms.

REVIEW:
First let me say that this is the second in the series and when I picked it up I actually thought it was the second in another series about gargoyles so I was very confused when I started reading this one. And honestly I never really got into the story. Most certainly you need to read the first one to understand this story. While the romance of it can stand alone the background story can not and while it is explained throughout the story something is missing by having not read the first one.

Spar and Fil are sweet for lack of a better word. Spar is overbearing and protective but do you think a gargoyle who comes to life would be anything but? And Fil has a sarcastic and snide sense of humor which is kind of fun to read.
All in all I would say it is a good story if you start from the beginning and understand it.

And Paddy is the kind of trouble that Natalie has a taste for.
Even after years of the rock and roll lifestyle, Paddy never forgot the two wickedly hot weeks he once shared with Natalie. Now he wants more… even if it means tempting Natalie and her iron-grip control. But there’s a fine line between well-behaved and misbehaved—and the only compromise is between the sheets!

REVIEW:
2.5 Hearts I am on the fence about this book. But leaning towards the just ok side. First it was a bit wordy and secondly I am not really sure the characters ever really connected. It is also written in an odd manor. It is as if the writer is trying to make the conversations too real but going so far that the wording seems off.

I really am not sure what Paddy sees in Natalie. She has so many issues and never sees to enjoy life. Yes she used to so I can see his connection to her then but not now. Paddy is sweet. Not really the alpha macho man that the synopsis made me think he would be. But he is sweet.

I enjoyed the connection between the brothers and think maybe I would enjoy the story of Ezra and Tuesday better than this one.
