BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Step out of the winter chill and into the warmth of Fool’s Gold, California, the charming small-town setting for a new holiday novella from New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery

Famous former NFL stars don’t date single working moms like Bailey Voss. She’ll allow herself to daydream about Kenny Scott’s muscles and killer smile, but wanting more would lead to post-holiday regret. Then Kenny volunteers to run a toy drive with Bailey, and she learns that he’s not just hot…he’s also generous, funny, nice. The whole package—tantalizingly out of reach.

The ache of past loss reminds Kenny why he needs to avoid getting too close to anyone. Especially to a gorgeous redhead and her adorable little girl. Mess it up, and he’d lose them both. Yet Kenny can only resist Bailey for so long. And as festive spirit spreads throughout the town, he’s all wrapped up in Bailey’s sweet, sexy kisses and determined to make this the first of many Christmases together

KELLY’S REVIEW:
4 Hearts As with all novella’s my review will be short and sweet.
Another great trip to the wonderful town of Fool’s Gold, California. I was so excited to read Kenny’s book. The tension between Kenny and Bailey has been growing over the last two book, ever since the Boys of The Score PR firm moved to Fool’s Gold. I really enjoyed Kenny & Bailey’s book. While I am a little sad that Kenny only got a novella I think that Ms. Mallery did a wonderful job with the story. Yes I would have liked more. But I am not sure that there would have been enough for a full length novel.

I am looking forward to the next book in this series!

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts Fool’s Gold is one of my favorite places to visit and Christmas time makes the visit even sweeter. This romance has been in the making for a long time. The moment Chloe walked up to Kenny he was a goner. It just took him all this time to realize it.

This is a short novella and therein lies the problem I wish this had been longer. I love Bailey and was so thrilled for her to be moving on with her life with Chloe. And Kenny is just a great guy and we have loved him through all the other books and it was sad that we didn’t get more of their romance.

No one should miss any of the books in the Fool’s Gold series but if you haven’t read any I suggest starting with this year’s trilogy of stories so you understand the connection of Bailey, Kenny and Chloe.

The Classic Christmas Cake
By Delia Smith

This, with no apologies, is a Christmas cake that has been in print since 1978, has been made and
loved by thousands and is, along with the Traditional Christmas Pudding, one of the most popular recipes
I’ve produced. It is rich, dark and quite moist, so will not suit those who like a crumblier texture. Recently
we took some of these cakes along to book-signing sessions up and down the country and were quite
amazed to see so many people take a mouthful and then buy a book!

1lb (450g) currants

6oz (175g) sultanas

6oz (175g) raisins

2oz (50g) glacé cherries, rinsed, dried and finely
chopped

2oz (50g) mixed candied peel, finely chopped

3 tablespoons brandy, plus extra for ‘feeding’

8oz (225g) plain flour

1/2 level teaspoon salt

1/4 level teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

1/2 level teaspoon ground mixed spice

8oz (225g) unsalted butter

8oz (225g) soft brown sugar

4 large eggs

2oz (50g) almonds, chopped (the skins can be left on)

1 level dessertspoon black treacle

grated zest 1 lemon

grated zest 1 orange

4oz (110g) whole blanched almonds (only if you don’t intend to ice the cake)

You will also need an 8 inch (20cm) round cake tin or a 7 inch (18cm) square tin, greased and lined with silicone paper (baking parchment). Tie a band of brown paper round the outside of the tin for extra protection. You need to begin this cake the night before you want to bake it. All you do is weigh out the dried fruit and mixed peel, place it in a mixing bowl and mix in the brandy as evenly and thoroughly as possible. Cover the bowl with a clean tea cloth and leave the fruit aside to absorb the brandy for 12 hours.

Next day pre-heat the oven to gas mark 1, 275°F (140°C). Then measure out all the rest of the ingredients, ticking them off to make quite sure they’re all there. The treacle will be easier to measure if you remove the lid and place the tin in a small pan of barely simmering water. Now begin
the cake by sifting the flour, salt and spices into a large mixing bowl, lifting the sieve up high to give the flour a good airing. Next, in a separate large mixing bowl, whisk the butter and sugar together until it’s light, pale and fluffy. Now beat the eggs in a separate bowl and add them to the creamed
mixture a tablespoonful at a time; keep the whisk running until all the egg is incorporated. If you add the eggs slowly by degrees like this the mixture won’t curdle. If it does, don’t worry, any cake full of such beautiful things can’t fail to taste good!

When all the egg has been added, fold in the flour and spices, using gentle, folding movements and not beating at all (this is to keep all that precious air in). Now fold in the fruit, peel, chopped nuts and treacle and finally the grated lemon and orange zests. Next, using a large kitchen spoon, transfer the cake mixture into the prepared tin, spread it out evenly with the back of a spoon and, if you don’t intend to ice the cake, lightly drop the whole blanched almonds in circles or squares all over the surface. Finally cover the top of the cake with a double square of silicone paper with a 50p-size hole in the centre (this gives extra protection during the long slow cooking). Bake the cake on the lowest shelf of the oven for 41/2–43/4 hours.

Sometimes it can take up to 1/2–3/4 hour longer than this, but in any case don’t look till at least 4 hours have passed. Cool the cake for 30 minutes in the tin, then remove it to a wire rack to finish cooling. When it’s cold, ‘feed’ it –make small holes in the top and base of the cake with a cocktail stick or small skewer, then spoon over a few teaspoons of brandy, wrap it in double silicone paper secured with an elastic band and either wrap again in foil or store in an airtight container. You can now feed it at odd intervals until you need to ice or eat it.

Jennifer’s Review of Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe

Review (4 Stars): I really enjoyed Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe and this is the perfect little romance for the holiday season.  Issy Randall is the owner of the Cupcake Cafe and things have been going well for her in both her personal and professional life.  Issy’s boyfriend, Austin, is away in New York on business and she has been making preparations for the busy holiday season, waiting for his return home.  Austin has the opportunity of a lifetime when he is offered a position in New York and Issy must now choose between starting somewhere new or saying goodbye to the man who has made such a difference in her life.

I liked Issy and I’m so glad that things were going well for her after the first book, Meet Me at The Cupcake Cafe.  She was a very sweet and fun character and spending time with her was like spending time with a good friend.  This is a great book for the holiday season but I would recommend reading the first book before starting Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe because you get to meet and enjoy these characters from the very beginning of their journey.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts I was going to review the three stories separately but honestly they all seem to be about the same so I will lump them together. All three stories are about 50 pages of sweet and hot rolled into one. The romance of the stories is sweet and the characters great. The sex scenes are hot. LaFleur writes great short erotica. As a warning (for lack of a better word) the third story is M/M just in case that is not your thing.

Kelly reviews Burn For Me by Ilona Andrews

burn for meTITLE: Burn for Me
SERIES #: Hidden Legacy #1
CHARACTERS: Connor “Mad” Rogan & Nevada Baylor
AUTHOR: Ilona Andrews
PUBLICATION DATE: October 28, 2014
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire…

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

REVIEW:
I had a hard time rating this book. I don’t know what it was but the first few chapter’s interested me. A new world to explore and a new twist on magic. Connor peaked my interests. All moody and mysterious. Nevada came acrossed as tough and determine. But then I read on and found myself bored. I am not sure if it was my mood or not. Or maybe I just have a hard time with the Urban Fantasy genre (I like my HEA at the end of the book). Or maybe it was the first encounter between Mad & Nevada. I don’t know. But I didn’t connect with this book. Maybe at a later date I will pick this book up and re-read. But at this time I am not sure I will continue with this series.

Kimberly reviews Unleashed by Rachel Lacey

unleashedTITLE: Unleashed
SERIES #: Love To The Rescue #1
CHARACTERS: Main Characters
AUTHOR: Rachel Lacey
PUBLICATION DATE: 10/28/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
What happens when you find the right one at the wrong time?

Cara Medlen has a serious case of animal attraction. And it’s not because of all the foster dogs she’s rescued. She’s got it bad for her incredibly sexy neighbor. Her one rule: Don’t get attached. It’s served her well with the dogs she’s given to good homes and the children she’s nannied. Yet the temptation of Matt’s sexy smile might just convince her that some rules are made to be broken.

Matt Dumont doesn’t need his skills as a private investigator to detect disaster on the horizon. Cara is everything he thought he’d never find-gorgeous, funny, and caring. But there’s no way he can start a relationship just as he’s about to move to another state. Talk about bad timing. As their attraction sizzles too hot to deny, they’ll have to make a decision: forget the consequences and let loose, or forget each other and let go..

REVIEW:
I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised at this story. I wasn’t sure how it would be since I have never read this author before but it is really sweet and a really good read. Cara is someone you want to be friends with, she loves animals and would give the shirt off her back for the people and animals she cares about but she also has a past that is stopping her from moving forward. She had cancer as a teenager and is waiting for the 10 year mark before beginning to have a life (This is not a spoiler… it is said pretty quickly in the story). But even when you are waiting to get one… life happens. Matt is a PI who is getting ready to uproot the life he has but Cara comes into it and changes everything for him. He is a sweet romantic type of guy. He doesn’t put off the alpha male feel but he is an all around good guy and someone you want to fall in love with.

I enjoyed the connection of the characters. I enjoyed the background characters as well. And I really enjoyed the dogs. While not given personalities like in some books they do have a major role in the story. If you are a fan of contemporary romance then you will enjoy this book. While it doesn’t shove it down the readers throat the book does remind you that you need to live your life. You never know what will happen and it is better to have lived and loved… and read.

Reynaldo Cruz looked terrible. Two fat rolls of bandages stopped above where legs and feet should fill the bed. Tubes emerged from the wrappings and disappeared under the sides. He’d lost both legs, that was obvious. He also had an oxygen tube taped under his nose and an intravenous line in his hand. Dark hair stuck to his head, and his tan skin shined as if coated with lotion or sweat. His eyes were closed.

She’d studied the pictures she could find, including one of him on the Pateros football team as a junior in 2003 and one printed in the Quad City Star Tribune when he’d completed basic training. Ten years ago, he’d been a skinny boy in an oversized army hat, but the arms and shoulders of this man were too muscled to be labeled boyish. Her stomach lurched over the contrast of his upper body filling the space between the bed rails and the empty mattress at the foot of the bed.

When the nurse looked over her shoulder and connected with Grace, she jerked her head at the bed, as if she’d been waiting for Grace to enter. Maybe some visitors fled without stepping inside, but taking the easy route wouldn’t give her answers about the engagement photo. To get her life back, she’d have to come all the way in.

Despite the monitors arrayed around the top of the tilted bed, the room was quieter than she’d expected. No repetitive beeps, just the generic white noise of electronics and humming ventilation.

“Hello.” She swallowed and tried again, but the new greeting sounded too loud.

The man in the bed fluttered his eyelids and turned his head, and then his mouth fell open and his skin flushed to his hairline. She might have no earthly idea why he’d fabricated an engagement, but even with the robe and hairnet, he recognized her.

“Surprise, Sergeant.” The nurse stood. “Your fiancée’s here!”

The whole world believed the lie.

Standing at the head of the bed, if she focused on his face, she could keep the bundled stubs out of her peripheral vision. “Hello, Reynaldo.”

The nurse gathered a tray of dishes. “Buzz if you need me.”

After the other woman left, the silence absorbed the energy Grace’s nerves had supplied on the way to the room. She could almost graph how the longer she stood five feet from the bed, the smaller she became. Eventually, if neither of them spoke, maybe she would disappear.

On a paper taped to the wall, someone had written SSG Reynaldo Cruz, Pateros, WA and a string of numbers and letters that must have meaning to army people.

Enough time passed with her studying the room and him staring wordlessly that any change felt awkward, but she tried again. “I’m Grace Kim. But you know that, don’t you?”

The disposable paper cap created a desperate urge to scratch her scalp, a feeling almost as sharp as the one that overcame her when her cubicle-mate talked about his kids’ headlice, but she kept her hands at her sides and waited for the man in the bed to reply.

He nodded, and his lips flexed like a ling cod until he managed to say, “Rey Cruz.”

“This is awkward, isn’t it?”

“No.” This time his voice was deeper and stronger than she’d expected, and he nodded, which confused her.

“You don’t think so?”

He closed his eyes and blew out a huff of air while he made a twisting gesture with his hand, as if screwing in a light bulb or flipping things.

“You meant yes?”

He nodded again.

She pulled a chair beside the bed and looked over the rail at his head and shoulders. The edges of a tattoo peeked below the sleeve of his blue hospital gown. “I had two flights full of babies, so let’s cut to the chase. Why’d you claim we’re engaged?”

“Long.” His lips moved, and eventually a word emerged. “Stor-stor-story.”

“I have a week off that I didn’t want. Go ahead and tell me.”

He rolled his eyes and lifted empty hands, palms up. “No.”

Idiotic laughter, as sudden as the tears she’d almost released downstairs, bubbled close to the edges of her control. Of course he must have some sort of brain damage. “So how are we going to clear up this mess if you can’t even tell me how it started?”

Jennifer’s Review of His Road Home

Review (3.5 Stars): Very cute romance about a soldier in Afghanistan who makes up a story about a fake fiancée but when he is wounded, the picture of his fiancée is published in the paper.  Grace Kim has never even met Rey Cruz and is shocked to learn that she is engaged to be married to this wounded hometown soldier. When she is sent to tend to her “future husband,” she is amazed when she meets this strong, caring young man.  What started out as a mistake, turned out to be a love that neither of them bargained for, in a time when they both needed it the most.

Rey and Grace were adorable together. I was so glad that Grace took a chance to get to know Rey instead of thinking he was a stalker for having her picture and the fake fiancée story.  By texting one another after the accident, they slowly built a relationship through friendship and found out that they had the chemistry that made them want something more.  Lovely military story that will have you wanting more from this great author.

Can Dixie really talk dirty and prove that she’s cleaned up her act? Game on!

REVIEW:
I have to be totally and completely honest here. I picked up this book about a month or so ago and got a few chapters in and didn’t love it. So I set it down. I could not put my finger on what was wrong. So when I had the chance to review this book via audio I jumped at the chance. I am so very very glad that I did. This story was great!! I have no clue what my problem was the first time around. But I loved Dixie, Caine, Em, Landon, the Lady’s of Call Girls and the whole stuck up little town of Plum Orchard.

Ms. Cassidy has a knack for giving me a fit or 20 of anxiety as her stories go on. I so badly wanted Dixie to kick a certain southern belles back side up and down the neat little streets of Plum Orchard. But at least that is not how the new Dixie works. Caine is all kinds of yummy and pain in the butt hotness. You really can’t not like Caine even when he is being an ass. I loved the humor and heartbreak that Ms. Cassidy infuses in this story. I really can’t wait for my next visit to the PO.

This is my first story by Ms. Chase. She did a wonderful job of bringing Dixie, Caine and the whole lot of them to life for me. I will surely pick up more book read by Ms. Chase.

If you are looking for a fun, heartbreaking, humorous second chance at love along with a good dose of phone sex you really need to pick up a copy of Talk Dirty to Me.

There’s something about the strong-willed mechanic that sets Mike’s motor running—and scares the hell out of him. Mike has loved and lost and will never hurt like that again, even if that means walking away from a woman who makes him feel alive for the first time in years.

When a simple kiss turns hot and heavy, Mike discovers he can’t stay away, no matter how certain he is they’re destined to crash and burn…

Teaser #3 Excerpt:

She circled the car to unlock his door. He closed in on her instead of moving back so she could open it. Hell. She could feel his breath on her neck and did her best not to shiver. “You want to back up and give me some space?”

“You have plenty of space. You’re little.”

“Please. I’m tall. You’re just a giant.” She turned. Big mistake. Because it put her in his arms, a hairsbreadth from his fine chest and those glorious muscles he’d used to incapacitate Jim in seconds. Jim had been drunk, yes, but he was a mean drunk and a decent fighter.

Mike had taken him down with little effort. So strong. Bad-ass. Just her type.

“You’re not that big,” Mike said in a low voice. “Just right for—”

She cut him off by dragging his neck down and plastering her mouth to his. For a moment, he remained still, and she wondered if she’d made a huge mistake. Handsome, sexy, probably rich Mike McCauley wouldn’t want some cool chick like Del. He’d be after a Suzie-homemaker like his moth—

He kissed her back, taking charge of the embrace. Mike put his hands on her head to hold her in place while he kissed the ever-living breath out of her. She’d never felt so surrounded before. Del had dated larger men, but Mike dwarfed her. So big, so hot, so damn sexy.

He tasted like chocolate chip cookies, and that sweetness made her melt. He knew how to use his lips and tongue to maximum advantage. When he leaned in to her, she thanked her stars she hadn’t zipped up her jacket. He pressed his chest against her breasts, and she sagged against the car, weak with desire.

He pulled back to look at her. His eyes had darkened to a sapphire blue. His lips were slick, his mouth taut, a furious hunger on his face. “I knew you’d be like this.”

Before she could ask what “this” meant, he dug his fingers into her hair, holding her in place while he angled her chin up and dove in for a second kiss.

MH3-cropped200A little about Marie:

I’ve been writing as far back as I can remember. Interest in the written word, no doubt spawned by my English teacher father, continues to this day. I’m a voracious reader, gobbling everything from romance to horror to fantasy and more. I’m in love with the art of putting pen to paper…so to speak.

I majored in English from Penn State University, earning a B.A. in Liberal Arts, as well as a commission in the United States Marine Corps. Five years later, after serving as a communications officer, I left the service to focus more on family. After going through an assortment of jobs–the Marine Corps Reserve, an IT representative, a middle manager for a Fortune 500 transportation company–I stopped working to raise two new additions to the family–my youngest sons. During this period, I decided to stop dreaming and start seriously writing.

In December of 2004 my first story was published, and I haven’t looked back since.  I currently have over a hundred titles (yeah, shocked me too!) with Carina, Ellora’s Cave, Fated Desires, Loose Id, Samhain, Sourcebooks, and Totally Bound.

I’ve received several awards to include: the 2005 Passionate Plume for Scifi/fantasy romance, the 2006 Amber Quill Heat Wave contest winner, 1st Place in Steamy Erotic romance for the 2006 Lories, finalist in the 2007 Linda Howard Award of Excellence, finalist in the 2008 Reveal Your Inner Vixen MRWA contest, and finalist in the 2012 Reveal Your Inner Vixen MRWA contest.

Winter Romance Wednesday! Kimberly reviews Oh Naughty Night by Leslie Kelly

oh naughty nightTITLE: Oh Naughty Night
CHARACTERS: Main Characters
AUTHOR: Leslie Kelly
PUBLICATION DATE: 10/21/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Hot for the holidays!

Every Halloween party has its share of eye candy, and journalist Chaz Browning has just spotted a treat he can’t resist;a deliciously wicked witch with sparkly red hair and deep, dark eyes that promise all kinds of sexy tricks. She wants no names. No strings. Just a night of lust-filled magic.

The witch’s mask may hide her face, but Lulu Vandenberg knows exactly who Chaz is. They spent most of their childhoods tormenting each other. So the moment Chaz touches her and everything turns to lust, Lulu knows she can never reveal her identity. But desire has a memory of its own, and Chaz has vowed to find his fantasy woman before the holidays end.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is a cute sort of holiday romance. There honestly isn’t much about the holiday but that is ok. It is a sweet story anyway. It can be a little wordy with the memories of Chaz and Lulu’s childhood together. It reminds us too many times that Lulu can’t tell Chaz who she is. But other than that it is cute. The bedroom scenes are done well and not overdone. It is only about 200 pages so it is a short story. The characters connect really well and share a great chemistry.

I will read the next in the series and look forward to it.

Navy SEAL Phillip Banks is the prince of protocol. But after his last mission went horribly off-course, all of that control has dissipated. Now he’s at the mercy of one very determined female who is pulling out all the stops on Operation Christmas—including red-hot lingerie and the promise of oh-so-wicked delights… But does giving in mean giving up everything he’s worked for?

REVIEW:
I’m sorry to say that I really just didn’t feel it with this story. The characters didn’t seem to have much chemistry and it felt more like Frankie was using Phillip at first. The idea of the story is a bit cliche which could be fine since a lot of Harlequin romances can be but I just never got into this story.

There was a lot of potential with this book but it just never got off the ground.

Kelly reviews Talk This Way by Dakota Cassidy

talk this wayTITLE: Talk This Way
SERIES #: Plum Orchard #0.5
CHARACTERS: Flynn McGrady & Cat Butler
AUTHOR: Dakota Cassidy
PUBLICATION DATE: April 1, 2014
ORDER LINKS:Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In her sexy new series, bestselling author Dakota Cassidy introduces the Call Girls, a spirited group of friends ready to take on lust, love and everything in between…. Find out where it all began in this delicious novella!

If life is like a box of chocolates, Cat Butler has tasted them all—and decided on none. It’s no wonder she can’t keep a job, even though her mother’s health depends on it. Just when she finds herself up a creek without a paddle—again—a benevolent friend throws her a lifeline. In the form of a job at, of all places, a phone sex hotline. Not exactly what she had in mind, but if it pays the bills for her mom’s expensive nursing home, what’s the harm?

Successful entrepreneur Flynn McGrady knows a thing or two about responsibility. So when his mother has a stroke, he knows the right thing to do is relocate to Atlanta to be near her while she recovers. He’s got a plan for everything—except for feisty Cat, who finally gets his mama to talk again. Talk dirty, that is, and he’s not pleased. Cat is gorgeous and sassy to boot…too bad she’s not the type to settle down.

Cat and Flynn may have bigger fish to fry, but the sparks between them are hotter than hell. And when they finally give in to temptation, the results are explosive. Can a girl who follows her heart and a guy who follows his head find their way to forever?

REVIEW:
Poor Cat Butler finds herself trying her hardest to keep her head above the water and keep her ill mother in the very expensive rehab home. But when Cat’s sassy mouth gets her fired from her latest job, she finds a very unconventional job offered to her by her friend Landon. The question is will she take a leap of faith or sink. Oh and did I mention the sexy Flynn?

Flynn McGrady is only in town to check on his mom. The last thing he ever expected was the sweet and sexy Cat Butler to be able to get his mom talk again. But saying “Spank me harder” was not exactly what Flynn had in mind. But there is just something about Cat. Something that makes him lose his mind and good senses.

As with all novellas I can’t give away to much. So I will leave you with this: Talk this Way was a very fast read, yet it was a very fun story and a great beginning to the Plum Orchard series. Looking forward to all the books in this series.
