Winter Romance Wednesday! Kimberly reviews Home For Christmas by Lily Everett

Home for ChristmasTITLE: Home For Christmas
SERIES #: Sanctuary Island #4
CHARACTERS: Libby & Owen
AUTHOR: Lily Everett
PUBLICATION DATE: 10/06/15
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Tis the season for family and love…

At least it’s supposed to be. For Libby Leeds, however, the holiday season is just another reminder of things she’d rather forget. When she left Sanctuary Island as an orphaned child, she never thought she’d go back except in her dreams, dreams she’s kept alive by writing monthly column of her fictional small-town life, until her publisher sends her back home for the holidays.

Owen Shepard is a fallen hero, wounded in action rescuing three of his fellow soldiers, but after a whirlwind of media attention, all this charismatic Army Ranger wants is to get back on his feet and make it to Sanctuary Island to be with his daughter in time for Christmas. What he didn’t expect was to be put on a crash course with a columnist hiding her past. Will the magic of Sanctuary Island at Christmastime allow them to find healing together?

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts This is a very sweet holiday story. While a bit cliche’ it still brings you a feeling of warm and love while reading.

Owen is a wounded soldier. Libby is a writer who lives more in her imagination than reality and when she is forced to entertain him and his family for the holidays the romance begins.

Like I said the story is good even though typical of holiday romance. The couple of problems I had were the repeating of thoughts over and over. Owen told us at least 20 times how he had to get better to go back in the field. Libby equaled that with how much she didn’t have a loving family.

The one thing I really enjoyed about the story was the first chapter. It really showed the relationship that Libby was having with Owen even though she hadn’t met him yet. She had already started to fall for him just seeing his tv interview and I think we could feel her crush.

If you enjoy a sweet holiday romance you will enjoy this one.

Kelly reviews The Single Undead Moms Club by Molly Harper

25101899TITLE: The Single Undead Moms Club
SERIES #: Half Moon Hollow #4
CHARACTERS: Wade , Finn & Libby Stratton
AUTHOR: Molly Harper
NARRATOR: Amanda Ronconi
RUN TIME: 9 Hours & 33 Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: October 27, 2015
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | Audible | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In the next book in Molly Harper’s Half Moon Hollow paranormal romance series, Libby (a widow-turned-vampire) struggles with her transition, and finds out it sucks to be the only vampire member of the PTA…

Widow Libby Stratton arranged to be turned into a vampire after she was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. It wasn’t the best idea she’s ever had, but she was desperate—she’s not about to leave her seven-year-old son to be raised by her rigid, overbearing in-laws.

On top of post-turning transition issues, like being ignored at PTA meetings and other mothers rejecting her son’s invitations for sleepovers, Libby must deal with her father-in-law’s attempts to declare her an unfit mother, her growing feelings for Wade—a tattooed redneck single dad she met while hiding in a closet at Back to School Night—and the return of her sire, who hasn’t stopped thinking about brave, snarky Libby since he turned her.

With the help of her new vampire circle, Libby negotiates this unfamiliar quagmire of legal troubles, parental duties, relationships, and, as always in Harper’s distinct, comedic novels, “characters you can’t help but fall in love with” (RT Book Reviews).

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts As always Ms. Harper writes a story that sucks you in and makes you run that emotional gauntlet. The combination of Ms. Harper’s witt & amazing storytelling combined with Amanda Conconi’s voice & talent at bring characters to life left me wishing I could move to Half Moon Hollow yet again. This is a winning combo!!!
I always love to visit Half Moon Hollow. I just love this town and the characters. I loved that In The Single Undead Moms Club we get to see how the town folk of HMH deal with the newest vampire in town. Needless to say they didn’t take it very well.
I loved Libby. Libby is such a fun character and she is great with her son. I loved that she wouldn’t let Dick hug her (I was dying laughing, poor Dick). I really liked Wade even when he was being a huge brat about the supply closet. Oh and don’t forget the epic back to school supply showdown. I really like Wade & Libby together. So much so that when I got to the end of the story I looked at my audiobook and yelled “You are not done, keep reading. Amanda why did you stop reading!!!!!”.
Finn, what can I tell you about Finn. Other then he made me really wish I could stab him with a fork.
I really can’t wait to see what is next in this series!!!!

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3
Again another interesting episode.   I think that this was my least favorite.   And not because it was a bad story, but I just didn’t really connect with Tara and Bryce.   It was nice to see some kind of happily ever after.

I did really enjoy the scene between Dakota and Sebastian.  Things are going to blow up in Storm and I believe that Dakota is going to be the ring leader.

Excerpt: (Copyright © 2015)

At the sound of an engine revving, she glanced over her shoulder. The SUV was pulling out of the spot and heading in her direction. Her heart rate kicked up. She knew she was probably acting crazy but didn’t care. Veering off the sidewalk, she raced through the park where vehicles couldn’t go. As she cleared a cluster of trees without the sound of running feet coming after her, she let out a shaky breath and kept up her pace.

Risking a glance over her shoulder, she nearly stumbled when she saw a man dressed in all black step out from the trees.

That face.

Holy shit. Recognition slammed into her with the intensity of a battering ram. With a scarf around his neck and a knit cap on his head, she couldn’t spot one of the distinguishing features she’d seen in the file she had on him. But she knew he had a jagged scar around his neck and tended to favor shaving his head.

She knew it was him from his icy blue eyes.

Grisha. A murdering psychopath.

Fear took hold, its unforgiving grip squeezing around her chest like a vise, colder than the winter morning air.

Though she wanted to run, she stopped and spun around on the sidewalk, raising her bear spray with a steady hand. No one could withstand this if she shot it in their face, and she just wanted the chance to get away. She certainly wasn’t going to take the guy on in hand-to-hand combat. “Get back!” she shouted, her finger steady on the trigger. She was glad she wasn’t outwardly shaking. She needed to paint a picture of calm even if she was trembling inside.

To her surprise, he held up his hands and almost looked apologetic as he watched her. “I don’t want to hurt you, Karen.”

Holy hell, he knew her name. So this definitely wasn’t random. Because why would this guy be in Baltimore of all places, in the same park she ran by almost every day? Did he know who she worked for? God, he probably wanted to torture her for information. She wasn’t going to stand around and ask him a bunch of questions. The facts that he knew her name and was a violent criminal were enough for her to run for her life.

Whirling around, she raced down the sidewalk, her heart beating out of control, the sound of her blood rushing in her ears so loud she couldn’t tell how close he was behind her.

She wanted to pull out her phone, but she’d strapped it around her ankle so it would be out of her way. She couldn’t risk slowing down. If she could just get somewhere public, maybe she could flag someone for help.

As she moved deeper into the park, she cursed herself for coming this way, but he’d been blocking her exit. As she risked another glance over her shoulder, full-blown panic exploded inside her like fireworks. He was about twenty feet behind her and closing. He moved fast for such a big man, and she knew he wouldn’t stop. The range on her spray was thirty feet, so she could take him. She’d only get one shot at this, so she had to do it right.

His expression was grim and he said something to her, but she couldn’t hear anything above the blood rushing in her ears.

She could keep running, but he was going to reach her soon. And she knew without a doubt she’d lose against him in any sort of physical altercation. She’d seen pictures of what he’d done to someone who’d crossed him. This might be her only chance to get away or at least get help. Drawing in a deep breath, she let out a bloodcurdling scream, hoping someone would hear her as she stopped and turned to spray him.

Still screaming, she had started to press the trigger when a blur of motion out of the corner of her eye made her stumble backward.

A man in similar attire burst from the trees lining the sidewalk. There were two of them!

Pressing the trigger, she started spraying wildly as the newcomer tackled her. She flew back against the sidewalk, her head slamming against it as she lost her grip on the bear spray.

“Don’t hurt her!” Grisha shouted.

But that couldn’t be right. Unless he wanted to be the one to inflict pain. She tried to struggle, but the other man was on top of her and had her in a tight grip. She couldn’t stop gasping, her chest terrifyingly tight. She couldn’t breathe through the panic pressing in on her. Every horrible photo or crime scene she’d ever seen at work crashed in on her at once. She didn’t want to be a fucking statistic! She blinked as everything around her became fuzzy. Stay awake, she ordered herself as the edges of her vision started to fade.

No, no, no. She couldn’t be unconscious around these monsters. But she couldn’t control her breathing. It was too fast, too panicked. Pins and needles erupted in her hands and feet. Her eyeballs felt as if they were bulging. The edges of her vision closed in. Her body refused to listen as darkness swept her under.

3.25 Hearts This is a short holiday story… sorta. It is about 50 pages and a very quick read. It was part of an anthology that I had not read even though I thought I had read all of Crusie’s books. I had a hard time getting started with this book. First Trudy is a bit well witchy. Nolan seems a bit immature and they didn’t have much chemistry. Then the story takes off a little and then it gets a bit better.

It is set in 2006 over “the toy to have” and back then that would have been a big thing alone but then there is a bit of a spy game going on and who is the bad guy and who is the good guy. If you want a quick read that is set at Christmas time and gives you more of the overload of the holiday than the romance of it than this is a great book…

REVIEW:
Super excited for a new Dragonfury story. I love this world. I mean come on Dragons!!!! While I love this world and am already looking forward to the next story in this series. Fury of a Highland Dragon was a good story and we got a whole new set of Scottish Dragons. I really liked Tydrin, I really liked Ivy this story was average to me.
Don’t get me wrong. Tydrin and Ivy have a great love story. Everything moved really fast (which is fine and happens in novellas) but there was a big part of the story that left questions unanswered. I hope that this means we will get to revisit Tydrin & Ivy again soon in the future.

I purchased this book and this review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

 Excerpt:

She looked at the stranger with his dark hair that hung to his shoulders and his brown eyes that were so dark they were nearly black.

He wasn’t as pretty as the Red Eyes, but his ruggedness, the sheer masculinity he exuded was hard to dismiss. In fact, it was difficult for her to look away from him.

How could a man appear sensitive and ferocious at the same time? And yet, he did. Lexi had the insane urge to rest her head on his chest. A black shirt was stretched tight over his hard muscles.

She had to look up at him he was so tall. Lexi frowned as she noticed his incredibly long, dark eyelashes. Then she made the mistake of looking down.

He had a mouth that made her dream of spending hours kissing him. His lips were wide and captivating. Perhaps it was the effects the Red Eyes had on her that made her look at him with such longing.

But she had a suspicion that the stranger was always charming and fascinating. She’d noticed it the first time. Only she had refused to acknowledge it. This time, she couldn’t help herself.

His gaze watched her as if he were waiting for her to come to a conclusion. Her time in Edinburgh had proven that she couldn’t trust anyone. Handsome or not, strangers were enemies.

“I’m just trying to help,” he said and took a step toward her.

Lexi had turned her head to the second man right before then. She was so wound up that she reacted before she thought twice about it and stabbed him.

“Dammit,” he said between clenched teeth. His fingers tightened around her wrist.

“Stop doing that.”

Lexi blinked in confusion. He acted as if she’d actually hit her target. That couldn’t be right. He would’ve reacted with pain, not stood there as if nothing had happened.

She glanced down at her knife and felt as if she had been knocked flat on her back. There was blood on the blade. Her gaze jerked to his left side where she saw a dark, wet stain on his sweater.

Lexi took a step back, suddenly more afraid than she had been before. “Leave me alone,” she said and held up the knife.

“I would, lass, if you would but come to your senses and stop following the Dark around.”

Viking-Warrior-Rising---Tour-Graphic

AsaMariaBradleyHighThis November Asa Maria Bradley releases the first in her exciting new Viking Warriors series, Viking Warrior Rising! To celebrate, Asa’s here to play a game of Marry, Kiss, Kill with three names we provided. For this round we gave her Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Brad Paisley.

Can I just make all the Brads my husbands? Maybe we could just put their first name on the marriage certificate and nobody would notice if I rotating schedule for my husband? Please? No? Okay, if I have to make a choice I’d marry Bradley Cooper. I’ve had a huge crush on him ever since the Alias TV show. He was amazing in Silver Linings and I like how he doesn’t take himself too seriously, as evident by him resurrecting his character for the remake of Wet Hot American Summer. And who wouldn’t make out with Brad Pitt?! We’d be kissing for a long, long time once I got my hands on him. That leaves only one Brad and unfortunately I have to eliminate him according to the rules of this game. The only reason Brad Paisley will perish is because he is the Brad on whom I’ve had a crush for the shorter time. No hard feelings, Mr. Paisley. I still love the hat, and the sexy grin, and the swagger.

An Excerpt:

Leif strode toward her, stopping a few paces away, concern on his face. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” she croaked. The air between them crackled, making the hairs on her arms stand up. Was she the only one feeling this?

He took a step closer and cupped her cheek in his palm. “Are you sure? You look a little pale.”

She resisted the urge to rest her head in his hand. “No, I’m fine.” She took a step back.

He frowned.

“We found one more bug in the game room.” Her voice sounded rough.

“Ulf told me.” He stepped toward her, eyes blazing.

“We’re working on the computers tomorrow,” she whispered, taking another step back. He crowded her. His body heat confused her, making her want impossible things. She cleared her throat. “It shouldn’t take us long to improve your firewall and install a few security checks.”

Leif watched her silently.

“You want to sit down?” She gestured toward the arm chairs.

“Sure,” he said, but didn’t move.

Naya had to step around him. Her skin sizzled when her arm accidently brushed against his. Relieved, she sank down in one of the blue chairs. A small table created a barrier between her and Leif. “So,” she said. “You were going to explain what makes you different from regular humans.”

He sat down in the empty chair, elbows on knees, studying his clasped hands. After a few moments he tilted his head and looked at her. “I’ll try to answer all of your questions, but some of this may sound a little crazy.”

“I’ll keep an open mind.”

Leif’s eyes met hers. Whatever he saw in them seemed to satisfy him. “I died in 1050.” He paused, watching her reaction.

Naya kept her gasp from escaping and instead nodded encouragingly.

“In the Norse culture, warriors who die in battle or die a heroic violent death are sent to live with the gods in Asgard. The men spend their time training in Valhalla with Odin. The women are schooled by Freya.”

Naya’s mind reeled. What he described didn’t seem possible, but he was so sincere. Obviously he believed his story to be true. “I thought there were only male warriors in the Nordic tradition.”

“Most stories are based on the old Icelandic sagas. They describe Valkyries as leading the men to Valhalla.”

“And that’s not the way it is?”

Leif smiled. “The sagas were all written by men long after the Viking age ended. They didn’t know what happened in Freya’s meadow and took some poetic license.”

“So, typically male, instead of just saying ‘I don’t know,’ you make up shit instead.”

He smiled, his dimples stealing her breath. Again.

She looked away. “So, this place where the gods live, this is the Nordic heaven?”

“Not exactly. It’s the warriors’ reward for dying an honorable death. They are allowed to live on, to fight again.” He studied his hands. “I don’t remember much of Valhalla. Time flows differently there. All my memories run together as if they happened the same week.”

She looked up to find him watching her. “I’m sorry, I’m trying to follow what you’re saying. But—”

“It is a little crazy?” He smiled.

“A little.” A lot.

“Is it any crazier than being abducted and kept in a camp? Any crazier than enhancement injections?”

“Touché.”
