Natasha reviews Vanished by Elizabeth Heiter

vanishedTITLE: Vanished
SERIES #: The Profiler #2
CHARACTERS: Evelyn Baines
AUTHOR: Elizabeth Heiter
PUBLICATION DATE: 12/30/14
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Sometimes the past can haunt you…

Eighteen years ago, FBI profiler Evelyn Baine’s best friend, Cassie Byers, disappeared, the third in a series of unsolved abductions. Only a macabre nursery rhyme was left at the scene, a nursery rhyme that claimed Evelyn was also an intended victim. Now, after all these years of silence, another girl has gone missing in South Carolina, and the Nursery Rhyme Killer is taking credit. But is Cassie s abductor really back, or is there a copycat at work?

Sometimes the past is best forgotten…

Evelyn has waited eighteen years for a chance to investigate, but when she returns to Rose Bay, she finds a dark side to the seemingly idyllic town. As the place erupts in violence and the kidnapper strikes again, Evelyn knows this is her last chance. If she doesn’t figure out what happened to Cassie eighteen years ago, it may be Evelyn s turn to vanish without a trace.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is the second book in the Profiler series which features Evelyn Baines as an FBI profiler who struggles with her past, the disappearance of her best friend when she was a child and her current employment position. Though this is a part of a series this book can be read without reading book 1 since the author recaps fairly well what happens in the first book in the series. I have to be honest, throughout this book I was pretty impatient because I just knew who the kidnapper was and who it wasn’t and I was so frustrated with the entire cast of characters – especially Evelyn for wasting so much time looking in the wrong directions! I was seriously so fed up with the false chase that I was yelling at my Kindle. Then – FINALLY – they realize what I’ve realized the whole time…OH BUT I WAS WRONG! Oh my gosh I was so wrong and I loved that I was. It is truly enjoyable to be so confident in something and have the author throw you for a complete loop – I did not see that coming and that’s a highly paid compliment. That cemented the book for me in the great read category. I did enjoy the supporting characters – Tomas was my favorite, and I also enjoyed Kyle and Evelyn. Evelyn did seem weak and totally irrational at times, but there were others where she was very assertive and confident. If I saw more of that side of her I bet I’d like her a lot more. All in all a good read that’s definitely worth reading to the very last page.

Exclusive Excerpt – Hour of Need by Melinda Leigh

“Shh.” Ellie wrapped her arms around Grant’s waist and hugged him.

Shocked, he pulled back, but she tightened her hold. Grant, ignoring the warning signals from his conscience, returned the embrace. He rested his forehead on her hair and accepted the comfort she offered. His heart stirred in an uncomforatble and dangerous spiral. He liked this. Too much. This was the sort of thing his married friends missed while they were deployed: human contact, shared emotions. For a second, he thought maybe it was worth missing. But no, that would be selfish. This wasn’t just about him. It wouldn’t be fair to Ellie to start something he couldn’t finish. He moved every year or so, and if he really wanted to be a general, he didn’t need emotional ties tempting him to turn down assignments that could further his career. It was much easier to remain emotionally detached, because until this week, that’s what he’d been. Grant had spent most of his adult life alone and aloof, avoiding personal connections and complications.

But damn. He couldn’t seem to let go of this soft woman in his arms.

She sighed, and her body relaxed. She shifted, leaning back. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

Her warm brown eyes filled with empathy. “That this all happened to you. You haven’t had time to grieve.”

A small shudder passed through him, followed by a wave of need he couldn’t explain or deny, except that his soul was an empty shell. He pressed his lips to hers and let the taste of her fill the void inside him.

#1 bestselling author Maya Banks continues her suspenseful and steamy Slow Burn trilogy with this second book-a twisting tale featuring a strong yet vulnerable heroine in danger and the sexy alpha hero who must save her

Beau Devereaux is no stranger to the strange. As the head of Devereaux Security, he’s more than familiar with the realities of physic powers. So when a family friend approaches him about protecting his daughter, he’s more than ready to jump on board. What Beau isn’t prepared for is the extent of his attraction to his beautiful and powerful client. What began as a simple assignment, just another job, quickly turns personal as Beau discovers he’ll do anything at all to protect Ari. Even if it costs him his life.

REVIEW:
In His Keeping is the second book in Ms. Banks Slow Burn trilogy. An similar to book 1, one of the Devereaux boys finds himself tangled up with a woman that has psychic powers.
I liked this book. Liked Beau. Like Arial. But I was not overly in love with the story. I found at times that the dialog dragged on and on. I did enjoy learning more about the Devereaux’s parents, even if we are left with more questions than answers at the moment.

If you liked book one (Keep Me Safe) you will enjoy In His Keeping. I am looking forward to the next book in this trilogy and Zach’s story. I do hope that Quinn & Tori will get stories too? Maybe a spin off?

Kelly reviews Fragmented by Stephanie Tyler

fragmentedTITLE: Fragmented
SERIES #: Section 8 #3
CHARACTERS: Jem & Drea
AUTHOR: Stephanie Tyler
PUBLICATION DATE: January 6 ,2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
From New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Tyler, the Section 8 series continues…

WHEN THE RISKS ARE THIS GREAT…

When Dr. Drea Timmons was kidnapped during Section 8’s last mission, Jem did everything in his power to rescue the woman he’d fallen for—a woman unwillingly recruited for one of S8’s most personal and dangerous covert operations. Drea survived, but at a price. The trauma of her capture has rendered her without a single memory of her ordeal—or any recollection of how violently unpredictable her ex-boyfriend, Danny, an Outlaw Angel, had become, or why she had left him.

IS TRUST EVEN AN OPTION?

When Danny threatens to turn Drea over to the feds, she is forced to go on the run and confront a past that is as deadly as her future. As trouble closes in on both ends, Drea has no choice but to trust Jem, the only man who can help her, the only man whose electrifying touch brings back memories—piece by piece—too stirring to forget

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts Fragmented is book 3 in the Section 8 series. In my review of Unbreakable (bk 2) I had said that you could read Unbreakable (bk 2) without reading Surrender (bk 1). Well you really should read Unbreakable (bk 2) before reading Fragmented (bk 3). Fragmented picks up where Unbreakable leave off and the events that happened to Drea. So if you have not read Unbreakable you might want to stop here.

Fragmented did pick up after the events from Unbreakable. Which left Drea without parts of her memory. But she remembers the man in the photo. A man she sees as a hero. Her hero.
But sometimes people are not what they seem. Drea found that out a long time ago too.

Jem’s job was to protect Drea and he let her down. But when push comes to shove he doesn’t know if he is strong enough to walk away from her.

This was a good story. I enjoyed Jem & Drea’s story. I was also thankful that it was not as heart wrenching as the prior books. I am not sure that I could have handled another story like Grace’s. I really wish that Drea would have done just a tad bit more in that room with Danny (I know I would have given the chance). There is a lot going on in Fragmented. From the FBI to the Biker gangs Section 8 has it’s hands full.

I am very interested to see what happens with Jem’s little brother Key ( :D). Oh and Ethan. We can’t for get Ethan.

Kelly & Kimberly review Hungry Like The Wolf by Paige Tyler

hungry like the wolfTITLE: Hungry Like the Wolf
SERIES #: SWAT #1
CHARACTERS: Gage Dixon & Mackenzie Stone
AUTHOR: Paige Tyler
PUBLICATION DATE: January 6, 2015
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
INTRODUCING SWAT: SPECIAL WOLF ALPHA TEAM
They’re tight
They’re on target
They’re as alpha as men can get.

The Dallas SWAT team is hiding one helluva secret . . . they’re a pack of wolf shifters.

The team of elite sharpshooters is ultra-secretive—and also the darlings of Dallas. This doesn’t sit well with investigative journalist Mackenzie Stone. They must be hiding something . . . and she’s determined to find out what.

Keeping Mac at a distance proves impossible for SWAT team commander Gage Dixon. She’s smart, sexy, and makes him feel alive for the first time in years. But she’s getting dangerously close to the truth—and perilously close to his heart.

KELLY’S REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts Mackenzie Stone will do anything for a story. Her motto is “The truth should be told”, even if people get hurt. The story comes first. But Mac will soon learn that sometimes the truth can do more than hurt it can destroy.
Gage Dixon is the leader of the SWAT team. And he always puts his pack first. But when the nosey Ms. Stone butts her way into his life he either has to kick her to the curb and risk her finding out the true. Or pull her in and show her enough to throw her off the scent. Question is which is the lesser of the two evils?
This is going to be a good series I can see it already. I really did enjoy this first book. And like many first books in a series there is a lot of world building and history that needs to be laid out. So at times Hungry Like the Wolf was just a tad bit slow for me. At times I wanted to punt Gage & Mac both. But all in all I liked the story and can’t wait for more of these Wolf’s.

KIMBERLY’S REVIEW:
3 Hearts I had a hard time with this book. First I really didn’t feel like the characters had chemistry. I wasn’t too fond of the whole journalist thing and her using the team for information. I didn’t enjoy the writing very much and while I think the story had potential it didn’t meet it.

I really never became a fan of Mac’s. She seems cold and unfriendly, just like a stereotypical reporter, but maybe because of the beginning I never warmed up to her. Gage is good. I liked him. And I liked the Pack but just not the story. I didn’t like Mac’s reaction to finding out the info.

I am not sure why this book just didn’t sit well with me but it didn’t I am sorry to say.

REVIEW:
John Loughlin is a man that prides himself on always being prepared. So when he sets up a meeting with one very foxy Cree Forest, John thinks he has it all worked out. But unfortunately or maybe fortunately for John things don’t go according to plan.

Oh this story was way too short!!! I want more of John & Cree. I hope that by releasing this novella it means that John will be getting a full length novel soon and a very happy HEA!

If you have read the first 2 books in the X-Ops series you will love this short novella and glimpse into John’s life. If you are new to this series feel free to start with either the novella or book 1.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
One little lie, one huge grudge, and one picture-perfect plan for revenge…

Blackmailed into a prom date by the cute but geeky Dexter Black twelve years ago, Maya Werner shocked herself by having a good time. For a strong-willed, hot-tempered artist who’s used to having the upper hand, that’s never sat well with her.

Warning: Blackmailing a stubborn, hot-tempered artist into bed, and an ex-Marine who has a penchant for taking pictures. Yeah, those kinds of pictures

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts Revenge: Is a dish best served cold.
Well not if you are Maya Werner. Maya’s idea of revenge is to get hot and heavy with the very hot Dexter Black. It is only fair you see. Dexter blackmailed her into a date 12 years ago and he has done the same thing again now. But unfortunately for Maya, Dex is not going to let her go this time. This time is he prepared for her and so called revenge.
LOVED this book. Served Hot is the second book in Marie Harte’s Best Revenge series. If you have not read book on Served Cold you really should start there (but you don’t have to, but I would and did). In Served Hot we get to see how Maya part of the Terrible Trio handles her nemesis. And boy howdy does she handle him well. This was a really fun and quick read. I loved Dexter when we met him in book 1 and loved him even more in Served Hot. I am so very glad that I found Marie and her yummy books. I so can’t wait for the last book in this trilogy Served Sweet.

Natasha reviews The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

the good girlTITLE: The Good Girl
CHARACTERS: Mia & Colin
AUTHOR: Mary Kubica
PUBLICATION DATE: 7/29/14
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: “I’ve been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she has her dry cleaning done, where she works. I don’t know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she’s scared. But I will.”
Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn’t show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, at first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia’s life.
Colin’s job was to abduct Mia as part of a wild extortion plot and deliver her to his employers. But the plan takes an unexpected turn when Colin suddenly decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota, evading the police and his deadly superiors. Mia’s mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them, but no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family’s world to shatter.
An additively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a compulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems….

REVIEW: Wow! I wish I could be more eloquent, but I just can’t seem to pick my jaw up off the floor. I listened to this book on audio, which I highly recommend. The narrators are fabulous and give the story more character and greater depth. This book was 10 hours long which is really hard for a full time employed mother of two to get through with any sort of speed – but I finished it in 2 days because I was listening to it at every waking moment! This story was intense from the very beginning and it didn’t stop. The author alternated point of views from the “before” and “after” of some of the involved parties – that way we get bits and pieces of information but just enough to keep us guessing until the very end. Literally, the last 11 minutes had me screaming and crying and feeling so many feels I just didn’t know what to do with myself. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it. If you’re a fan of suspense, drama and great writing then you’ll love this book!

deadly falloutTITLE: Deadly Fallout
SERIES #: Red Stone Security #10
CHARACTERS: Sawyer McCabe & Zoe Hansen
AUTHOR: Katie Reus
PUBLICATION DATE: December 9, 2014
ORDER LINKS:Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Zoe’s stalker has been murdered…

Dr. Zoe Hansen was forced to leave her beloved hospital job to escape a stalker. It worked—or so she thought. She’s terrified when he reappears in her life one night—and stunned when he turns up viciously murdered soon after. She’s arrested for the crime, but she quickly clears her name. Unfortunately, her problems are far from over. She’ll have to accept the protection of the one man she shouldn’t want.

…now she’s in more danger than ever before.

Former Navy SEAL Sawyer McCabe might not know the gorgeous Zoe as well as he wants to, but he knows all about trouble. So when she’s threatened, he steps in to help her regardless of the consequences and gets her out of town. But it’s not enough to escape a determined killer. As the danger closes in they have to trust each other if they want to stay alive. And Sawyer’s determined to do whatever it takes to keep Zoe safe and in his arms. Because Zoe is worth risking everything for.

REVIEW:
Another great Red Stone Security story from Ms. Reus. The last few books have alluded to the fact that Zoe has been keeping something from her family and friends. And what she has been keeping could have easily got her killed.

Zoe & Sawyer are so great together. Is it wrong that I loved that there was a not so pleasant past between the ultra calm Vincent and Sawyer. And that when that past is brought up Zoe doesn’t side with you you think she would. Also the threat of calling their mother. Classic.

I will say that I think I read this book way too fast because the story was over before I knew it. But it was a great fast read. I am ready for the next book in this series. If you are a Red Stone Security fan you will enjoy this book. If you are new to the series, while I think you can pick up any book in this series and be fine I would suggest starting from the being.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts ***Warning***
If you have not read Cole’s Redemption you may not want to read this book yet. The events that happened in book 5 shape the dynamic of book 6. You have been warned. I will do my best to keep the review spoiler free for those who have not read book 5 yet.
***End of Warning***

Wolf’s Fall picks up after the devastating events in Cole’s Redemption. I can remember reading Cole’s Redemption thinking how on earth could Ms. Tyler let this happen to Nick. Not my big strong Nick. But at last it did happen and Nick has to try to move on. Which is not an easy thing for him to do. Through in the fact that he just met his mate and she is of all things a vampire.
Wolf’s Fall took me on a lot of highs and lows. Lows as to how low Nick really is. Highs that Calla is there for him. Lows of the suffering that Calla has to endure. Highs that Nick finally sees the light. All in all this was a very good book and a really quick read for me. There were just a few holes in the story for me. Things moved very quickly, which is fine but I would have like to see more relationship building.

Even with that I am so very very glad that Nick got his story and hope that this will lead him on the path of healing.

If you are a fan of the Alpha Pack you will surely enjoy Nick’s book, especially after Cole’s Redemption.

REVIEW:
WOW!!!
What a tangled web of craziness happened in this book. Gosh I am not even sure where to start without recapping the back blurb or giving everything away (you know how I feel about spoiler reviews) but here it goes:

We start Hour of Need with a double murder. A double murder that leaves more questions then answers. An unbelievable trauma that will bring a broken family back together. Hour of Need is a tangle of many threads that I could not figure how they were ever going to come together. To say I was shocked at the end would be an understatement. I had my guesses but Kudos’ to Ms. Leigh for keeping me on my toes. The mystery and suspense of it all was brilliant. The romance was sweet. But both balance each other so wonderfully.

I can’t wait for the next installment in the Scarlet Fall’s series (I know I should not wish bad things on to these characters, but I do 🙂 ). If you are a fan of Ms. Leigh’s you will need to put this on your must buy list. If you are a romance suspense fan, please put on your buy list. If you are new? Please put on your buy list. So in short you should buy this book.

Soon she learns that the biggest threat might not be from the men trying to kidnap her, but from the quiet warrior who poses an immediate risk to her heart.

Sinful Seduction appears in Sinful Seduction anthology

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts This was my second time reading this book. Well I read the first time and then listened on audio. Here was my original thoughts after my first read.
I would say breaking up an attempted mugging is not the best way to meet a woman, but leave it up to Alexander Blue to do just that. Being in the right place at the right time not only let him save Mina from being mugged, kidnapped or worse, but also gave Blue a chance met a woman that just possible could be it for him. That is if she will let him get close.
Another great Red Stone Security story. My only issue is that I read this story so fast. I wanted more of Blue!! I just loved him and Mina! I hope to get a glimpse of them in a future Red Stone Security story.
If you are a fan of this series you will want to make sure to add this book to your must read list. If you are new to this series not worries this book can easily be read as a stand alone.

My opinion has not changed. I loved this book. I loved Blue even more. And Mina that girl has guts and a wicked right arm. Loved it!! I was very honored to get an audio copy of this book to review. Sophie Eastlake does a great job again in this series. I just love it when a narrator brings the characters to life.
