bring the heatTITLE: Bring the Heat
SERIES #: Sugarland Blues #5
CHARACTERS: Austin Rainey & Laura Eden
AUTHOR: Jo Davis
PUBLICATION DATE: December 1, 2015
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The author of On the Run and the Firefighters of Station Five series once again proves that nothing is hotter than loving a man in uniform—or more dangerous…

Being on the Sugarland P.D. means never backing down, no matter how intense the case—or how dangerous the attraction…

Captain Austin Rainey knows all too well that being a good cop sometimes means gaining some bad enemies. After his ex-wife is killed, he finds himself on the wrong side of the law, trying to prove he’s innocent of her murder. The last thing he needs is a distraction—especially of the irresistible female kind…

Medical examiner Laura Eden has always found Austin more than a little intriguing, but she’s kept her feelings under wraps. Now she’s determined to do her job and clear his name—but as her investigation brings them into close proximity, she can’t deny the attraction between them—or resist the temptation he presents.

But Laura and Austin soon realize their budding feelings might be more than emotionally perilous. Someone is coming after everyone Austin holds dear—and Laura might be the next one in the line of fire

REVIEW:
Another wonderful story in the Sugarland PD series. In Bring the Heat we follow Captain Austin Rainey. Austin’s life has not be that easy for the last year or so. First his marriage falls apart, then his soon to be ex is fighting him for their unborn child (a child she never wanted) and now someone is committing horrible crimes all in the name of revenge on Austin.
My heart broke reading this story. Austin has to go through so much. Way more than any man should ever have to go through. Luckily for him he has an amazing set of friends, colleagues and of course Laura Eden.
I really enjoyed this story. Ms. Davis does an amazing job of sucking you into the life of her characters and making you feel all of their joy, pain, sorrow and happiness. Bring the Heat was a roller coaster of emotions. And while there were parts of this book that were beyond painful it was a great ride with a happy ending.
I can’t wait to see what is next in this series.

HER BEAUTY IS POWERFUL.

They call her Kaz. She’s a gorgeous model with a good head for business—until now, at least. HIS DESIRE IS DANGEROUS.

It’s an offer that’s too good to refuse . . . and as Kaz finds herself growing more comfortable with Jake, the attraction between them reaches arousing new heights. But while the artist and his subject learn more about each other in the intimacy of wine country, evil lurks in the shadows—and soon it becomes clear that someone else has designs on them.

REVIEW:
This was a great story!!! Ms. Douglas has done an amazing job with this story. I really joyed Jake & Kaz’s story. Both have had some terrible events happen in their past. But those things made them the people they are today.
I will tell you that the story line moves really, really fast in this story. But it was not a forced fast. It felt very natural. Jake and Kaz are just too good together to think otherwise.
I really enjoyed the suspense part of the story too. I might have been a little slow on figuring out who was doing what. But it was a really good right. I am already looking forward to seeing what happens next.

she can killTITLE: She Can Kill
SERIES #: She Can…..#5
CHARACTERS: Cristan Rojas & Sarah Mitchell
AUTHOR: Melinda Leigh
PUBLICATION DATE: December 8, 2015
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Reformed assassin Cristan Rojas just wants to raise his daughter in peace. But after twelve years on the run, he learns that even the quiet little town of Westbury, Pennsylvania, has many hidden dangers. Although he can’t shake the feeling he’s under surveillance, Cristan’s attraction to Sarah Mitchell continues to grow, as do his concerns that his secret past could jeopardize anyone who gets too close to him.

Sarah is ready to start her life over with her children, a new job, and a budding romance. Her newfound happiness is threatened when her ex-husband becomes increasingly violent—and she soon learns her ex isn’t the only person stalking her.

Cristan fears someone from his past has arrived in town, someone far worse than a jealous ex. Someone who may be responsible for a brutal—and unsolved—murder a dozen years ago. To protect Sarah and his daughter, he must shine a light into the darkest recesses of his nightmarish past.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts She Can Kill is like a room of mirrors. You can see your enemy in the reflection but when you turn they are no longer there.

In She Can Kill we get to learn more about Cristan and his past. We get to learn that not all is as it seems in his life. We learn that this time his choice to stay may just be the the last choice he ever makes. We also get to see how Sarah (Rachel’s sister (bk 2)) is doing. Which is not great. Sarah finds herself on the wrong end of a very angry ex-husband.

She Can Kill has a lot going on. Just when you think you have the enemy in your sights they have moved. I really enjoyed Cristan and Sarah’s story. They both are dealing with choices from their past haunting them in the present. They both care deeply for their children and are willing to go to any lengths to keep them safe. While I kinda figured out the who’s, but the ending shocked me. The why’s were a real shocker to me.
It is so hard to write a review and not give away anything. So I will stop while I am ahead and spoiler free. But know that Ms. Leigh has written another excellent story.
I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.

AUTHOR: Jayne Ann Krentz
PUBLICATION DATE: December 8, 2015
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
No one does romantic suspense better than Jayne Ann Krentz. Now, the New York Times bestselling author of Trust No One and River Road delivers a novel that twists and turns into a read that will leave you breathless.

Madeline and Daphne were once as close as sisters—until a secret tore them apart. Now it might take them to their graves.

They knew his name, the man who tried to brutally attack twelve-year-old Madeline in her grandmother’s hotel. They thought they knew his fate. He wouldn’t be bothering them anymore…ever. Still their lives would never be the same.

Madeline has returned to Washington after her grandmother’s mysterious death. And at the old, abandoned hotel—a place she never wanted to see again—a dying man’s last words convey a warning: the secrets she and Daphne believed buried forever have been discovered.

Now, after almost two decades, Madeline and Daphne will be reunited in friendship and in fear. Unable to trust the local police, Madeline summons Jack Rayner, the hotel chain’s new security expert. Despite the secrets and mysteries that surround him, Jack is the only one she trusts…and wants.

Jack is no good at relationships but he does possess a specific skill set that includes a profoundly intimate understanding of warped and dangerous minds. With the assistance of Jack’s brother, Abe, a high-tech magician, the four of them will form an uneasy alliance against a killer who will stop at nothing to hide the truth.

REVIEW:
Eighteen years ago Madeline & Daphne survived a horrible ordeal. Madeline’s grandma has passed and now she gets a frantic phone call from the past.
This was a great story. Ms. Krentz writes a wonderful story with many twists and turns. As with every great suspense book I am always trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle before the end. Ms. Krentz does a great job of keeping me guess and in a state of Oh my goodness what is going to happen next. I loved the suspense of the story. The unraveling of an old mystery of the horrible events that happened 18 years ago. I really enjoyed Jack and Madeline’s romance. They were both so perfect for each other. I also loved Abe & Daphne.
I really enjoyed this story and was very happy that I pick up a copy of this book.

REVIEW:
4.75 Hearts I was so excited when Ms. Leigh & Ms. Elliot announced that they were going to revisit the small town of Solitude, Oregon. If you have not checked out the first four novella’s in the Rogue River series you should.
In Tracks of Her Tears we get to re-visit Seth & Carly. I loved them the first time around and love them even more after this novella. Seth is back to work and his first case is a murder of a young woman. Sadly, this is a young woman that Seth knows.
This story is full of twists and turns. Just when you think you have it all figured out Ms. Leigh throws another bone at you and your re-think your thinking. Thank you for revisiting this world. It freaks me out a bit how creepy and suspense authors mind works. But I can’t wait to see what is next!!!!!

The new Deadly Ops novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Shattered Duty—in the series that delivers “fast-paced romantic suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat!”*

Now, two unlikely allies must unite to prevent an escalating and unthinkable terrorist conspiracy. But as Tucker and Karen grow intimate, they realize the conspiracy runs deep, and their enemies are closer than anyone realized.

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts In Edge of Danger we get to follow 4 DEA agents who are wrongly accused of a terrorist attack. Not only are the wrongly accused, each had a hit put on them. The four guys all work so well together, but Tucker took the lead and the risk in this book (which I hope means the other boys will get a story *hint, hint*). Tucker is one mean SOB. He has to be for his job, but he doesn’t really like it. So when his team decides that they the help of a certain NSA analyst the set up a nice little meeting with her… Okay no they don’t. They kidnap her 🙂
I loved that Karen is a huge fighter. She out smarts the guys at least once and boy howdy it was funny (Poor Cole). But once she learns the reason behind her being taken she understands what she needs to do. And it doesn’t help that Tucker is really easy on the eyes.
Another really good story from Ms. Reus. I really enjoyed Tucker and Karen’s story. I liked the pace of the story. I really enjoyed the tension between Tucker and Karen. Oh and the closet or and the cabana. So much fun!!! I can’t wait to see what is next!!! I really really hope the Cole is next.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
After corporate attorney Hannah Barrett tries—and fails—to stop a kidnapping in Vegas, she can’t shake the haunting image of the terrified young girl she couldn’t save. She tells herself that a visit to her hometown in Scarlet Falls could be a welcome distraction. But soon, Hannah realizes the kidnappers have all the info they need to track her every move. And when chilling e-mails about the victim appear in her inbox, it’s frighteningly clear what happened in Vegas has followed her home.

Eight months after a terrible family tragedy, Hannah turns to Detective Brody McNamara once again. Brody is eager to help, though he’s embroiled in the investigation of a brutal murder. But the closer they work together, the stronger their feelings grow…and the more they stand to lose when two seemingly unrelated, but equally deadly, cases collide.

REVIEW:
Minutes to Kill is the second story in the Scarlet Falls series. If you have not read Hour of Need (bk 1) I would suggest you start there. The events of Hour of Need set us up for Minutes to Kill. BUT you can read Minutes to Kill, just know that it may spoil some of Hour of Need for you.
But back to Minutes to Kill. We learn a lot more about the only sister in the Barrett family. Hannah is just as tough if not maybe a little tougher than her older brothers. I can’t tell you to much, but know that Hannah will not go down without a fight. Girl knows her stuff and packs a punch.
We got to see a little of Brody in book 1 but we didn’t know a whole lot about him. So in Minutes to Kill we learn about why’s that lead him came to Scarlett Falls.
I really enjoyed this book. Brody & Hannah are great together. Hannah may be tough but Brody balances her out. I can’t wait to see what is next in the Scarlet Falls series. Bring on the elusive Mac.

SERIES #: Krewe Of Hunters #15
CHARACTERS: Meg & Matt
AUTHOR: Heather Graham
PUBLICATION DATE: 06/30/15
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Where is Lara Mayhew?

Lara, a congressman’s media assistant, suddenly quits her job—and disappears on the way to her Washington, DC, apartment.

Novice FBI agent Meg Murray, a childhood friend of Lara’s, gets a message from her that same night, a message that says she’s disillusioned and “going home.” To Richmond, Virginia. Meg discovers that she never got there. And bodies fitting Lara’s description are showing up in nearby rivers… Could she be the victim of a serial killer?

Meg is assigned to work with special agent Matt Bosworth, a hard-nosed pro in the FBI’s unit of paranormal investigators—the Krewe of Hunters. They trace the route Meg and Lara took more than once in the past, visiting battlefields and graveyards from Harpers Ferry to Gettysburg. Places where the dead share their secrets with those who can hear… As Meg and Matt pursue the possibility of a serial killer, they find themselves in the middle of a political conspiracy. Is there a connection? And who—besides each other—can they trust?

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts Heather Graham has a way of writing that many try to emulate and few can. She mixes the paranormal with suspense in a way that catches the reader’s attention from moment one. She also adds facts to the background that make the reader want to catch the next plane to go see the sights. In this one Graham brings us to the war of the states. The Civil War is steep in stories of brother vs brother and the some say the ghost of the soldiers still walk the fields. And Graham takes us there with a good story.

Now all the above being said I want to say I enjoyed the book and if I had read it as a stand alone without the rest of the series influencing me then I would probably given it more stars than I did but having read the entire series this just wasn’t one of my favorites. Maybe because there was very little paranormal in it. I doubt we had a total of one chapter length of visiting spirits and that saddens me. I love the connection with the ghosts that Graham usually brings in but it almost seemed like an after thought for this book. The suspense was good and as per the normal I was not sure “who-dun-it”. I had a bit of an idea but was only half right.

And to be honest I am not sure I felt that Matt and Meg had a solid connection. I know it sounds weird but if I had to finish the story it would say that “Matt and Meg got together but after being together for a short time realized their connection was more about the case and have decided to part as friends”. OK maybe not but still just not the explosive connection we hope for.

Again I want to say I really enjoyed the story. I loved reading the history even though this is not usually one of the parts of history I am interested in stories from Graham always leave me wanting more information and this one is no different but comparing this with the others in the series I have to say that I hope the next book in the series gives us a little more.

CHARACTERS: Lara & Brett
AUTHOR: Heather Graham
PUBLICATION DATE: 07/28/15

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Murdered by a dead man?

A woman named Maria Gomez is murdered in Miami, apparently by her husband—who’d been presumed dead, slain by a crime boss. FBI agent Brett Cody can’t believe it; dead or alive, the man had loved his wife. He also can’t help feeling guilty, since he was responsible for protecting Miguel and Maria Gomez.

A few miles away, Lara Mayhew has just begun working at a dolphin research facility. She loves her new job—until a dolphin brings her something unexpected from the deep. A human hand. More body parts show up, and when Brett looks into the situation, he discovers that the dismembered corpse is Miguel’s.

Soon, rumors of crazed zombies abound in the Miami media, and the Krewe of Hunters, an elite FBI unit of paranormal investigators, is called in. Brett and Lara find themselves working with the Krewe—and working closely together. An elderly crime boss who’s losing his memory seems to be key to solving this case, but…there’s no motive. Unless Brett and Lara can uncover one in the Miami underworld. And that means they have to protect themselves. And each other.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts One of the things I enjoy most about Graham’s writing is that I am never able to figure out the culprit and this was no different. And the thing that I do enjoy most is the way she delves into the surroundings and this time around it was based in Miami where I was born so I really enjoyed that. I was able to know where she was discussing and it gave it more of a real feel to me.

Graham is one of my favorite writers. She really pulls the reader in right away This is the 16th in the series but as always they can be read as a stand alone.

I really enjoyed Lara and Brett. Graham doesn’t exactly burn up the sheets with her books and that is ok. We know what is going on with the couple and that is all we need.

I would recommend anyone who loves romantic suspense with a touch of paranormal to read the Krewe Of Hunters books. You will not regret it.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In a world on the brink…

Six men. One sunken Spanish galleon. Millions in gold and silver coins lying on the ocean floor. And a past that refuses to let the guys of Deep Six Salvage forget the Navy SEAL motto: the only easy day was yesterday…

There’s more than one kind of treasure…

The nation’s security has always been CIA agent Olivia Mortier’s top priority. But a mission-gone-wrong has begun to make her wonder if there’s more to life than risking hers.

And more than one secret at the bottom of the sea…

Only two things could make Leo Anderson abandon his hunt for the legendary lost ship, La Santa Christina, and return to the world of weapons and warfare he swore to leave behind: a capsule of enriched uranium, lost on the ocean floor, and a plea for assistance from the one woman he can’t seem to forget.

REVIEW:
WOW!!! When Julie Ann wants to start a new series she does it in style. Hell or High Water is book one in the Deep Six series and we get to me Leo “The Lion” Anderson and his band of merry men. They are all ex-Navy SEALs. All trying to put a real life together after a promise to a fallen comrade. But of course things can’t so smoothly. Oh no…. smooth would be to easy.
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed learning about all the guys a little. Their backstory is heartbreaking and I will admit I shed a few tears. The adventure kept me turning the pages. The tension between Leo & Olivia was a perfect balance to tug and pull. It was also great to get a little cameo from one of Ms. Walker’s Black Knight Inc. characters 🙂
I can’t wait to see what is next for this six guys. The future is looking pretty bright even if they have to go deep to find it.

He stared at the ground for a long time while Sabrina watched him. He still hadn’t told her exactly how he’d gotten the scars. She hoped he would tell her someday…if indeed there would be a someday for them. If she even had a future. A shiver went up her spine and she couldn’t help but feel that something very bad was about to happen.
“Come on.”
Mason held his hand out toward her, with no signs of the darkness that had come over him just moments ago.
“I’ll cook us a mean breakfast,” he said, his southern accent deliciously swirling the words together.
“I thought you already had breakfast? I had a bowl of cereal.”
“I worked off all of those calories. I’m hungry again.”
His sexy wink had her face flushing hot. She cleared her throat. “I also thought you couldn’t cook.”
He let out an exaggerated sigh. “Technicalities. I’m sure between the two of us we can figure something out.”
They started to pass the truck on the way to the house, when Mason pulled his hand out of hers. “Wait, I left my watch in the tack room.”
Because he’d taken it off for shower sex. She sighed dreamily. He winked, apparently knowing exactly why she’d sighed, and bent down to kiss her.
Bam!
The deep-throated bark of a gun shattered the morning. A shower of wooden splinters rained down from the side of the barn, right where Mason’s head had been a half-second before he’d leaned down to kiss her.
He swore and grabbed her, throwing her to the ground as more shots rang out.
“Where are they coming from?” she yelled, as he scrambled backward and yanked her behind the barn with him.
“The house.” A beeping noise sounded from inside the tack room. “And that would be my perimeter alarm going off. Damn it. I screwed up. I shouldn’t have taken off the watch.”
“I’ll try not to take offense at that ‘screw up’ statement since I’m the screw-up.”
He winced and pulled her farther away from the corner as more shots cracked against the barn. “Sorry,” he said, as he grabbed his gun. “Didn’t mean that the way it sounded.”
She raised her leg and grabbed the Sig out of her ankle holster. “You’re forgiven, if you get us out of this alive.” Another shot burst through the wood right beside her shoulder.
Mason grabbed her and pulled her down closer to the ground. “We’ve got to get out of here.”

Jennifer’s Review of Exit Strategy

Review (4.25 Stars): This book had me from the beginning and didn’t let go until the very end.  I loved Sabrina and Mason because they just fit so well together and Mason definitely meet his match with Sabrina’s determined and spunky attitude.  Mason was a very sexy, mysterious man so I could see Sabrina’s attraction to him and the heat between these two characters was off the charts.

Exit Strategy was action-packed with enough danger and suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  The mystery as to why Sabrina was targeted for termination was well-written and will definitely keep you guessing.  I wanted to learn more about some of the background characters who came to this story with so much history and I’m looking forward to going back to Ms. Diaz’s previous books to fill in the gaps.  I enjoyed every minute of Exit Strategy and I’m looking forward to the next installment in this suspenseful series.
