It begins when Anne Prescott, a lovely Scottish nurse, begs Sherlock Holmes and Watson to help her find her fiancé and her sister, who have gone missing in the teeming streets of London. Immediately, Watson feels an attraction to her that shocks him. Newly married to Mary, and deeply in love with her, he struggles to put Anne out of his mind.
As Watson and Holmes dig into the slums and sewers of London looking for Anne’s fiancé and sister, they uncover a deadly web of bloody murders, horrific medical experiments, and even voodoo ritual that threatens not only London, but the entire British empire, and beyond.
Watson must call on his unique combination of expertise in the medical sciences, as well as his military training to stop this killer before London —and Anne — are lost to the killer’s bloody plan.
But time is short and the mystery ever more complex. How can he manage his feelings for Anne? What about his loyalty to Mary? He can’t have both.

REVIEW:
3.25 Hearts Here is the thing… You have to take your head out of the Conan-Doyle way of Sherlock Holmes was written. As new authors pick up this character we have to learn to enjoy Holmes and Watson in a new way.

This is written as if in Watson’s diary of the events. The storyline is well written and enjoyable. The suspense is typical of a Holmes book.

I look forward to read another one from this author to see how the characters grow under his writing.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
1685, Scottish Highlands

Cat Campbell knows all about Nathaniel Worthington, fifth Viscount of Lincolnshire. The determined Englishman is never far from Finlarig Castle, where his sisters train women to do more than read and write. And thanks to the fiery kiss they shared nearly a year ago he is never far from her thoughts. No one ever trained her how to forget an irresistible man.

Nathaniel knows he should keep his distance from the fierce Scottish lass, but when an urgent letter from Queen Catherine calls Cat to London, he can’t resist volunteering to escort her. The tension between the two has simmered for months, but the long journey in close quarters creates a raging wildfire that could burn them both.

Secrets of their past and the treachery lurking at court put both their future together and their very lives at risk.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This historical romance comes after a first kiss that should never have happened but once it did neither Cat nor Nathaniel can forget about it.

But he can not be interested in Cat since Nathaniel needs to marry someone from a nobel home or lose everything.

I can’t say that this book was out of the norm because it wasn’t. Very typical of the genre. But the writing was well done and the story was enjoyable.

Kimberly reviews Neon Prey by John Sandford

neon preyTITLE: Neon Prey
SERIES #: Lucas Davenport #29
CHARACTERS: Lucas Davenport
AUTHOR: John Sandford
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/23/19
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Lucas Davenport pursues a prolific serial killer who has gone undetected for years in the newest nail-biter by #1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford.

It was a relatively minor criminal matter, all things considered, but enough that the US Marshals obtained a warrant to enter the home. They didn’t expect to unearth trophies from a score of killings.

Now Davenport is on the trail of a serial murderer, one who was able to operate for years without notice or suspicion. But there’s even more to this killer than meets the eye…

REVIEW:
3.75 Hearts This is the 29th… Yes 29th… in the series and while you would think it has gotten old but it really hasn’t.. Mostly.

After 28 other stories some of the personality of Lucas has crossed over a time or two but that being said the story really holds up even after so many stories. The serial killer Lucas is after this time is a cannibal that the FBI has been after for a while.

I have to say the storyline was a bit dark but still an enjoyable read. And even though it is #29 you can read it as a stand alone.

Kimberly reviews Fear In The Lakes by Graham Smith

fear in the lakesTITLE: Fear In The Lakes
CHARACTERS: Beth & James
AUTHOR: Graham Smith
PUBLICATION DATE: 07/12/19
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A case with no leads.
A victim with no enemies.
A killer with no conscience…

When Detective Beth Young is called to investigate a victim with multiple broken bones, nothing prepares her for what she finds. James Sinclair is fighting for his life, and Beth can’t shake the idea that the nature of his injuries suggest someone with a personal grudge against him.

But James’s devastated wife Laura insists that her kind, softly-spoken husband is a man with no enemies. She was the one with the fiery temper, but James was so calm, she’d never once managed to provoke even a cross word from him in their eight year marriage. And he was the same with everyone – she can’t name one person who might want to hurt him.

But she knows virtually no details about her husband’s childhood or his life before he moved to the Lake District as a young man, and Beth feels sure that the key to finding James’s attacker is hidden in the secrets of his past. Who was he really? And what is the significance of the coded messages that Beth finds hidden on his laptop?

Then two more bodies are found in one of the deep, picturesque lakes that the area is so famous for, exhibiting similar injuries to the ones James Sinclair suffered. How are they connected? And how many more people are at risk?

Beth knows she is in a race against time to hunt a vicious killer who is both elusive and incredibly dangerous. A killer who knows what James did in the past. Who likes to be one step ahead. But who – if they realise they’re being hunted – might come for Beth next…

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is the third in the series but I have not read the other two but it can be a stand alone with just a bit of feeling like you missed something from the previous books.

I liked Beth and found her to be a strong woman capable of handling herself which I always enjoy.

The middle of the story got a bit slow. I was pushing my way through the middle but I had enjoyed the beginning and I was glad I did since the ending picked up and was enjoyable again.

This forces Jake in the middle of a battle between the government and the dragons of Asheville, where the true potential of his power is revealed.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts I have to say first this is a YA story. But I picked it up mainly because I live right outside of Asheville and wanted to see how the author included the city in the story.

I read it with my son and we both enjoyed it. It really is more for YA then for adults but still a fenjoyable entertaining read for teenagers.

Jake is a great character.

But the ghosts of her past won’t rest, and an unexpected encounter with the killer reawakens demons she thought were long dead. Could her chance encounter have rekindled the savage rage that claimed the life of her friend and now threatens Cadence herself?

Half-crazed with fear, Cadence takes flight, but instead of finding sanctuary, she runs headlong into one of the worst snowstorms to blast northern Wisconsin in years. Stranded, freezing, and alone, Cadence confronts her worst nightmare—until deliverance comes in the form of a stranger who rescues her and offers shelter from the blinding storm. But something is not altogether right with her savior, and Cadence is faced with another impossible dilemma. Should she trust this enigmatic stranger, or once again flee for her life? In the midst of an unrelenting storm, the walls are closing in on Cadence.

REVIEW:
2.75 Hearts This was a difficult story to read. It has a lot of potential but it never really met it. I had a hard time connecting with the characters but especially Cadence. Many times I was reading and thinking “seriously, that wouldn’t/can’t happen that way” and it took me out of the story.

Just not a book I would recommend.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:

As strange happenings continue to plague Kristi’s home, it is soon clear that there’s a very living threat in the neighborhood—several people have disappeared without a trace. Dallas can’t find any connection between the victims, but someone wanted them gone, and it might be linked to the history of McLane House. And that means Kristi should be very afraid.

REVIEW:
I love the Krewe of Hunters and the writing for Heather Graham. This is the 27th in the series. That seems hard to believe since I think I have read every single one of them. But as with all of the books in the series they can be read as a stand alone.

The best thing about Heather Graham’s writings is how she draws you into the city she is talking about and this one is no different, making me want to jump in the car and head to Savannah, Georgia.

The characters are always enjoyable to read and the ghost that brings aide to the Krewe is wonderful but the city and the history Graham brings to the forefront is the key to the story if you ask me.

If you enjoy the genre of suspense with a bit of paranormal then this is the book and series for you.

REVIEW:
4.25 Hearts I don’t read a lot of these kinds of books but how could I not read this one? I mean 50 dynamic dames? And they truly are/were. I will be honest and say some of them I wasn’t even sure what I had seen them in or who they were (like directors or writers) but once I started reading their stories I was interested.

As a fan of the movies like Gone With The Wind, The Way We Were, Pretty Woman and so many more I loved reading the stories of the women of Hollywood.

This is a GREAT book for any fan of movies but also anyone who wants to be encouraged by the power of women!

REVIEW:
4.25 Hearts If the question is “Did you like the book?” The answer is “Of course, It was written by Rebecca Zanetti.”

This is the 10th in the series but can be read as a stand alone. But as I always say about Rebecca’s books I have no idea why you wouldn’t want to read every single one of them.

Ivar has been through hell… literally. And it changed him in so many ways. But then he set eyes on Promise. First he is mesmerized by her abilities but then he becomes enchanted by her in every way.

I always love the women in Rebecca’s books. They are strong and independent but are not afraid of love.

I have never found a book of Rebecca’s that I didn’t love.

Kimberly reviews Lost And Found by Danielle Steel

lost and foundTITLE: Lost and Found
CHARACTERS: Madison Allen
AUTHOR: Danielle Steel
PUBLICATION DATE: 06/25/19
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
What might have been? That tantalizing question propels a woman on a cross-country adventure to reunite with the men she loved and let go, in Danielle Steel’s exhilarating new novel.

It all starts with a fall from a ladder, in a firehouse in New York City. The firehouse has been converted into a unique Manhattan home and studio where renowned photographer Madison Allen works and lives after raising three children on her own. But the accident, which happens while Maddie is sorting through long-forgotten personal mementos and photos, results in more than a broken ankle. It changes her life.

Spurred by old memories, the forced pause in her demanding schedule, and an argument with her daughter that leads to a rare crisis of confidence, Maddie embarks on a road trip. She hopes to answer questions about the men she loved and might have married—but didn’t—in the years after she was left alone with three young children. Wearing a cast and driving a rented SUV, she sets off to reconnect with three very different men—one in Boston, one in Chicago, and another in Wyoming—to know once and for all if the decisions she made long ago were the right ones. Before moving forward into the future, she is compelled to confront the past.

As the miles and days pass, and with each new encounter, Maddie’s life comes into clearer focus and a new future takes shape. A deeply felt story about love, motherhood, family, and fate, Lost and Found is an irresistible new novel from America’s most dynamic storyteller.

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts This is a story about finding yourself not only in your choices you made in your past but where you are right now.

Maddie has a difficult life. Mainly she is a loner. And she has time to reflect on the choices she made, the same questions we would ask ourselves. Why did I marry __? Why did I divorce __? Did I raise my kids right? If so why are we not close? And so on and so on…. The questions are endless for Maddie… and for us!

This is certainly women’s lit. This is about looking at ourselves through Maddie’s eyes. I had a bit of a problem in the beginning because I really wasn’t invested in Maddie and to be honest I felt she was a doormat under her own daughter’s feet but as her journey goes on I could relate to her a bit more.

I have a feeling, anyone who reads this will take some time, even if just a moment, to reflect on something about themselves.

crooked streetTITLE: Crooked Street
SERIES #: Frost Easton #3
CHARACTERS: Frost Easton
AUTHOR: Brian Freeman
PUBLICATION DATE: January 29, 2019
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | Audible | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The hunt for a killer in San Francisco becomes a dizzying game of cat and mouse in a thrilling novel of psychological suspense.
“Lombard is your Moriarty, Frost. Taking him down will be the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done.”
San Francisco homicide detective Frost Easton hadn’t seen his estranged friend Denny in years. Not until he dies in Frost’s arms uttering a final inexplicable word: Lombard. Denny appears to be the latest victim in a string of murders linked by a distinctive clue: the painting of a spiraled snake near the crime scenes. Is it the work of a serial killer? Or is Denny’s death more twisted and personal?
To find the answer, Frost reaches into a nest of vipers—San Francisco’s shady elite—where the whispered name of Lombard is just one secret. Now, drawn into a cat-and-mouse game with an enemy who knows his every move, Frost finds there is no one he can trust. And somewhere down the crooked streets of the city, Frost’s cunning adversary is coiled and ready to strike again.

REVIEW:
Crooked Street is the third installment in the Frost Easton series. This was another great story. In Crooked Street we follow the trail of another set of murders that seem to have some very strange connections, from the snakes painted near each death to the name Lombard. This case will take Detective Easton on a wild ride of who done it. But even a veteran Detective will not fully be prepared for the answers that he will get.

If you have not started this series I would recommend that you start with book one The Night Bird as Detective Easton’s story builds with each book. I can’t wait to see what is next in this series.

AUTHOR: Paige Tyler
PUBLICATION DATE: 06/25/19

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
He’s a wolf shifter.
She hunts monsters.
How can she be The One for him?

SWAT werewolf Zane Kendrick will do whatever it takes to take down the man who attacked his pack. His search takes him to Los Angeles, but when he meets Alyssa, the smart, sexy agent who comes to his aid, he’s immediately interested in pursuing more than just the next lead. All his wolf instincts tell him that she’s The One.

FBI agent Alyssa Carson has investigated some weird stuff lately, and finding missing people drained of their blood definitely falls into that category. When following a clue leads her to Zane, she agrees to work with him and his team. She’s attracted to the gorgeous Brit, but she doesn’t have time for anything but finding answers.

When Zane and Alyssa discover the sinister truth, it’ll take everything they have to make it out of this mission with their lives―and hearts―intact.

REVIEW:
4.25 Hearts While this can be a stand alone I suggest that you read the series so you understand what SWAT is all about. That being said you can read this on its own and enjoy it. This is Zane and Alyssa’s story. Alyssa is FBI who looks for exactly what Zane is. Zane is SWAT (Special Wolf Alpha Team).

I really enjoyed the storyline of them meeting. And the romance was sweet and sexy at the same time. Paige Tyler has written a lot of shapeshifter books and I have to say that sometimes they get routine but not this one. This one I have enjoyed more than I have in a while.
