Kimberly’s review of Heat Rises by Alice Gaines

HEAT RISES

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Snowbound in a cabin . . . able to live out all her fantasies . . . Laura Barber has dreamt of doing unspeakably delicious things with Ethan Gould for years. Now, stuck in a mountain cabin, she just might get her shot. Ethan offers her the chance to live out each and every one of those desires. They may be rivals in the business world, but in the bedroom they’re a perfect match. Knowing they have only a few days, Laura shakes off all her inhibitions. Every secret need, every lust-filled thought . . . it’s all fair game.
REVIEW: This is a short story of erotica. It is about 65 reading pages and a very good story. The characters were enjoyable and while the storyline at first was a little short of context when the couple really had an interesting time stuck in the cabin. The thing about this story was it is a pretty common erotica fantasy story, stuck in a cabin with the man of your dreams. But what I enjoyed was the way the characters were written. They were given very interesting personalities and a interesting background of knowing each other before. And while I did enjoy the story the erotica of the story was not very imaginative but still very well written. If you enjoy erotica then I think you will enjoy this book. It has all the highlights of a sexual daydream.

Kelly’s review of When Darkness Hungers by JK Beck

When Darkness Hungers

ORDER LINKS: AMAZON | B&N
BOOK SYNOPSIS:

FBI agent Alexis Martin knows that vampires exist—because one of them killed her sister. Assigned to investigate a series of bizarre homicides in Los Angeles, Alexis believes the murders are the work of rogue vampires—perhaps even the monster responsible for her sister’s death. Now she finally has a chance for retribution. Even better, Alexis receives unexpected help from a sexy stranger as hungry for rogue blood as she is.

Serge is a centuries-old bad boy who stays off the grid—keeping his secrets, his hunger, and his heart safe from exposure. A new breed of vampire that feeds off other shadowers, Serge finds sweet torture in Alexis’s arms. Loving her is a chance to be free from the hiding, the loneliness, the secrecy. But the truth about what he is, and what he’s done, may banish him to the dark confines of his own private hell—and destroy the beginnings of their love.

REVIEW:

I am not sure where to start on this review. I loved the first three books of JK Beck’s Shadow Keeper’s series. But When Darkness Hungers didn’t suck me into the world again the way that I would have like it to. Now don’t get me wrong. It is still a good book, but I would have to say my least favorite of the series so far. I had a hard time connecting with Alexis and Serge. I am not sure why but I did. The story line was a little too slow for me. I have read over a few other reviews and everyone seems to LOVE this book, but for me it was just okay… If you are a fan of JK Beck’s Shadow Keepers you will want to read, I am sure you will be happy. I will say that I am still looking forward to the next two books in this series.

Kimberly’s review of Too Tempting To Resist by Cara Elliot

Too Tempting To Resist
AUTHOR: Cara Elliot
PUBLICATION DATE: 05/01/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In the Wolf’s Lair . . .
Determined to stop her wayward brother from squandering their dwindling fortune, Lady Eliza Brentford decides to follow him to his favorite den of depravity. There, among the candlelight and raucous revelry, she encounters her brother’s role model in debauchery, the notorious Marquess of Haddan, Gryffin Dwight. Staring into his smoldering green eyes, Eliza can’t help but find the rakehell nobleman seductively charming-and sinfully attractive.

In a Lover’s Paradise . . .
When Gryffin appears on Eliza’s estate as a guest of her brother, a stolen kiss among the garden’s blooms leads to a night of unbridled passion. Suddenly the lovely widow feels herself opening up, like the petals of a rose. Could this master of seduction possibly feel true emotion for Eliza? Or is he leading her down the garden path to an Eden of delights no woman can resist-and a fall no woman can escape?

REVIEW:

What a delightful book. I could not put it down. The synopsis on the back of this book does not even come close to explaining everything that happens. Yes there is the love story between Hadden and Eliza but there is also the brother, the brothers despicable friends, her painting (incognito), Hadden writing (incognito) and flowers. I had no idea flowers had so many meanings and you will hear them all in this book. This is the second in the series even though is definitely stands alone. But the writing of this book makes you want to run out and read the first one and most certainly pick up the third when it comes out and I for one can not wait.

Hadden is the typical rake we have all read about in historical romance novels but the interesting thing is even before he meets Eliza he is tired of that life and ready to make a change he is just not sure what that change is until Eliza comes into his life. He has turned to writing and wants to publish his works about landscaping and has no idea the sample work he has seen is actually Eliza’s paintings. Hadden is a “man’s man” but when he meets Eliza he has this adorably sensitive playful side that makes the reader fall in love. And Eliza is so incredibly strong. So much is happening to her and she is always trying to figure it out on her own. She does not run off begging for help. She just knows that these are things she needs to deal with and she does. She is a delightful character who does not make you feel like she is a “damsel in distress” even though she most certainly is.

To play on the title – Read this book because it is “Too Tempting To Resist” and no lover of historical romances should resist it.

REVIEW:

We got to meet Ridge in Her Vampire Husband when he took over the pack he was part of. In The Werewolf’s Wife we learn more about what makes this sweet bad boy werewolf tick. About one wild night he spent in Vegas. You know the typical Vegas night. Save a witch from a firey death, get totally wasted with said witch, marry said witch, have some awesome sex, totally wolf out and almost get killed. But after that one night he has never seen his wife since then. Now Ridge is ready to start over, but 1st he needs a divorce.

Ridge is the big tough werewolf who deep down just wants to love and be loved. Abigail has for so long kept the walls up around her because she has never been lucky in love. These two make a great team. They work well together, as long as Abigail does what Ridge wants, which is not often.

I really enjoyed this story. I love the world that Michele has created. I love that so many of her stories have interlocking characters. It makes me always look forward to her next book. To see who we get to revisit this time.

Kimberly’s Review of Summer Days by Susan Mallery

Summer Days
AUTHOR: Susan Mallery
PUBLICATION DATE: 05/29/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Locked in an unexpected land dispute, Rafe Stryker is trapped in the one place he vowed never to return to – the Castle Ranch in Fool’s Gold, California. He made millions facing ruthless adversaries in the boardroom, but nothing could’ve prepared him to go head-to-head against stubborn, beautiful Heidi Simpson. No one is more surprised than Rafe to discover that he’s finding Heidi – and life as a cowboy – much more compelling than he wants to admit. For Heidi, the Castle Ranch is the home she’s always wanted. After a life on the road, the vivacious blonde has finally put down roots. She won’t give that up without a fight, not even for a man whose late-night kisses make her yearn to be a little less…wholesome. As the two turn from passionate adversaries to passionate, period, they’ll discover that summer love can last a lifetime.

REVIEW:
Oh, how I adore Fool’s Gold! Summer Days is a new direction in the Fool’s Gold series. This book is #7 in the series and takes on a character that we had only just met in the last book. Heidi is sweet and innocent in her own way and just wants to have a home to call her own and when her grandfather sells her land a big court battle takes place and that brings in Rafe to protect his mom from the “thief” who took her money and won’t give her the land. Rafe grew up in Fool’s Gold and is not happy to be back.

I really enjoyed these characters Rafe is what I would describe as a diamond in the rough. He has a heart of gold but doesn’t want anyone to see it. And Heidi is just an “every woman” type of girl, she is not gorgeous, she has simple taste, she is hardworking and wants to be loved.

As with all of the Fool’s Gold series (and the rest of Mallery’s books) I loved this story. It had me laughing and it had me shedding a tear for Heidi. I, however, was sad that more of the town was not mentioned in this book since that is what makes Fool’s Gold what it is but loved the story so much that I could see past that.

Usually with this series I say that, yes, the book can stand alone but it is best to read the whole series from the start and, yes, I will be saying that again but this one really can stand alone better than most. With it being the start of a new cowboy series (Stryker brothers) you really can read it alone and get to know Fool’s Gold. But be warned once you visit Fool’s Gold you will return again and again.

Kelly’s Review of Endure by Carrie Jones

Endure
AUTHOR: Carrie Jones
PUBLICATION DATE: 05/08/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
It’s all-out war (and no-holds-barred romance) in the climactic conclusion to Carrie Jones’s bestselling series.

Zara is at the center of an impending apocalypse. True, she’s successfully rescued Nick from Valhalla, but it simply isn’t enough. Evil pixies are ravaging Bedford, and they need much more than one great warrior; they need an army. Zara isn’t sure what her role is anymore. She’s not just fighting for her friends; she’s also a pixie queen. And to align her team of pixies with the humans she loves will be one of her greatest battles yet. Especially since she can’t even reconcile her growing feelings for her pixie king . . .

Unexpected turns, surprising revelations, and one utterly satisfying romantic finale make Endure a thrilling end to this series of bestsellers.

REVIEW:
Zara and crew are still trying to find a way to make the world around them safe again. Zara finally picks who she loves. And that was as far as I got in this book. Sadly, I didn’t finish this book. This is one of the very few books I didn’t finish. I am not really sure what it was, but I didn’t connect with the characters in this book. I loved Need (book 1), really enjoyed Captivate (book 2), and liked like Entice (book 3). But had a hard time with Endure.

I was really bummed, because I was really looking forward to this fourth and final book in the Need series. But for me it fell flat. I hope that fans of the Need series will enjoy this book more than I did.

Kimberly’s review of Somebody to Love by Kristan Higgins

Somebody To Love
AUTHOR: Kristan Higgins
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/24/12
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
After her father loses the family fortune in an insider-trading scheme, single mom Parker Welles is faced with some hard decisions. First order of business: go to Gideon’s Cove, Maine, to sell the only thing she now owns—a decrepit house in need of some serious flipping. When her father’s wingman, James Cahill, asks to go with her, she’s not thrilled — …even if he is fairly gorgeous and knows his way around a toolbox.

Having to fend for herself financially for the first time in her life, Parker signs on as a florist’s assistant and starts to find out who she really is. Maybe James isn’t the glib lawyer she always thought he was. And maybe the house isn’t the only thing that needs a little TLC….

REVIEW:

This book is second in not one but two series and what makes it interesting is it can stand alone and is still enjoyable. You never feel like you are missing some vital information from the other books. First it is the second after The Next Best Thing (Ethan/Lucy) where the best friends of Parker Welles are the main characters and then she ends up in Gideon’s Cove which was first introduced in Catch of the Day (Maggie/Malone).

The characters of Parker and James are very interesting and it does not take long for you to get involved in their story. Parker is portrayed as having grown up rich and spoiled but honestly I did not see it. Yes she was rich (until her father lost it all) but she has friends who are not rich, she is a single mom who works (writing children’s books) and is not afraid to do what she needs to do for her son. James is a lawyer and you can tell right off that there is more to him. He is a good guy who has gotten a bad rap for being Parker’s fathers “yes man”. There is a past they are both trying to move beyond. And a future together if they manage not to mess up the present.

I really enjoyed this book. I had never read anything from Higgins before but I will most certainly pick up more of her books. Higgins uses some British terms (bugger, crikey, loo, etc) and it seems a bit odd sometimes since the rest of the book she doesn’t and it is set in Maine, USA. The other bizarre thing is her talking to the angel characters in the children books she has written and them talking back to her (in her mind of course). But it does not take long to get passed that and just enjoy the story and the many background characters Higgins has included. And the Epilogue is so sweet it will bring a tear to any single mothers eye. .

Review of The Marriage Bargain by Jennifer Probst

The Marriage Bargain
AUTHOR: Jennifer Probst
PUBLICATION DATE: 02/14/2012
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
A marriage in name only…
To save her family home, impulsive bookstore owner, Alexa Maria McKenzie, casts a love spell. But she never planned on conjuring up her best friend’s older brother—the powerful man who once shattered her heart.
Billionaire Nicholas Ryan doesn’t believe in marriage, but in order to inherit his father’s corporation, he needs a wife and needs one fast. When he discovers his sister’s childhood friend is in dire financial straits, he’s offers Alexa a bold proposition. A marriage in name only with certain rules: Avoid entanglement. Keep things all business. Do not fall in love. The arrangement is only for a year so the rules shouldn’t be that hard to follow, right? Except fate has a way of upsetting the best-laid plans…

REVIEW:

Ok, this book definitely made me feel. I felt all sorts of anger toward Nicholas because he spent so much time caught up in his own jerkiness that he couldn’t see what was right in front of his face. Despite their long history, he still saw Alexa as the annoyance from his childhood. Sure he noticed that she grew up but that was mostly a physical thing. He accepted her lame excuses for accepting the money at face value when clearly he should have known better. He is way too into his own awesomeness to pay attention to the woman he could spend the rest of his life with. Alexa, despite all vows to the contrary, is still in love with the boy she fell for as a child. She keeps saying she is over him and tries her hardest to act it too, but she just doesn’t quite pull it off. While I admire the sacrifice she is making for her family I still want to smack her upside the head. She has very low self esteem when it comes to Nicholas and I really don’t blame her given their history. But I still wanted to kick her once or twice. I was not sure whether I was rooting for them as a couple or not. But Ms. Probst managed to change my mind. Despite everything I found myself hoping that Alexa would finally thaw Nicholas out and get him to see her for the woman she really was. Not just the gold digger he thought she was. I was at turns disgusted and frustrated by their behavior to one another.  Ultimately though it ended as I had hoped. I kind of felt like I had ridden a roller coaster when I was done reading it. It was an interesting read so go ahead and check it out.

REVIEW:

Opening Line:
“Tyler, are you aware that all the girls at Sexy Sirens have nick named you Cockzilla?”

Oh what can I say about the very naughty Tyler Murphy.  Tyler is every girls dreams and their worst nightmare all rolled into one.  Tyler, is a sex god but not  willing to comment to any one. So he spends countless nights on random hook ups, that mean nothing but a good time.  But he has never really got to the root of his problems, that is until an unexpected visitor shows up at his door and everything in Tyler’s life changes.

Delaney, is one tough cookie, but not tough enough to keep survive all these death threat.  Delaney has finally reached the end of her rope and has to seek out the help of the one person she never thought she would have to ask help from.  The one person that will turn her life upside down again.  The one person that can break her heart, but it will be worth it just to keep her son safe.  Even if that means losing her heart again.

I LOVED!!!!  LOVED!!!!! LOVED!!!!! this story.  I have to say a HUGE thank you to Shayla & her assistant Christie for allowing me to read this story.  I loved everything about it.  Tyler is such a tough guy.  He acts like he has no feeling, no emotions, nothing fazes him.  But in reality he is a very sensitive, loving, caring and would die for the ones he hold close.  Oh and Tyler is wicked talented in bed, he didn’t get the name Cockzilla for nothing.  *wiggles eyebrows*

Delaney, I really liked her character.  She is not overly tough or a pushover.  She has a great balance of both.  She really makes Tyler work hard for her and he does. These two are such a fun couple to watch.  Now while their story may have started a little unconventionality the love that these two share is unbreakable.

Shayla has written another WONDERFUL story.  If you have read any of Shayla’s other Wicked Lovers book you know just how wicked her writing is.  Well Tyler has some tricks up his sleeves.  Hint: It has to do with a wall.

I would highly, highly recommend this series to anyone (unless you are fate at heart).   If you have not started this series you really need too. Each book can be read as a stand alone.  But reading from the beginning will give you a better understand of all the characters.  Which Shayla does a great job of bring back in each book.

Again HUGE thank you to Shayla & Christie for letting me read and review.  And now I am dying for Xander’s book…This boy is going to be great fun to read.

REVIEWED BY: Kelly
NUMBER OF STARS: 5+ Stars

REVIEW:
Thanantos, aka Death, is not a very happy camper.  He has been a prisoner for the last 8 months, thanks to the his loving big brother and sister. So it is no wonder when feeling starts to return to his body the first thing on Than’s mind is revenge.   Revenge for the woman that betrayed him. Revenged towards his brother and sister, for imprisoning him.  Revenge for Pestilence, for not being Reseph anymore.  So Than comes up with a plan: step one get to the woman that betrayed him and make her pay.  Step two….. Well Than is not ready for step two because this involves something he never planned on.  Becoming a father.

Regan knows that she must protect the baby by any means necessary, but she keeps having nightmares of Thanantos killing her, taking the baby and not being able to stop the Apocalypse.  All because she betrayed him.  Betrayed him in such a horrible way, that no amount of sorry can explain away the hurt.   But there is one thing that Regan never counted on.  Than’s protectiveness over her and the baby.

What can you say about an author and a book that just totally blows you out of the water.  I am totally convinced that Larissa can’t write a bad book.   Lethal Rider gives us everything: love and lust, laughter and tears, betrayal, revenge, sacrifice, trust, redemption and forgiveness.   We get to see many characters for Larissa’s other wickedly good Demonica series.  And it is so nice to see the Horseman and the Demon kind working so well together.  🙂    I am SO in love with this series and am on pins and needle for Rogue Rider, Reseph’s book and the last of the Lords of Deliverance series.  But never fear!!!!!!!!!!!!   Reaver’s will be getting a book…..  SO can’t wait to see what Larissa has in store for the angel.  How she is going to redeem Reseph and where she is going to take us next…

REVIEWED BY: Kelly
NUMBER OF STARS: 3 1/2 Stars

REVIEW:
I do have to start by saying that I should have read Kiss of the Goblin King first, just so that I had a better understanding of the Shadowland world that Dai & Roan have lived in for so long.

That being said. I really enjoyed this book. Dai is a man that may be freed of a long held curse, but he is not free.  Dai has to learn to function in the Fixed Realm and deal with the magic that is calling to him.  On top of all of that Dai finds that he is drawn to Amanda in a way he doesn’t totally understand.

Amanda feels an instant connection to Dai when she sees him at the wedding of one of her dear friend. But Amanda is confused by her feelings.  I has been a long 8 years since her husband passed away and Dai is the first man to stir those feelings in her again.

I enjoyed reading the struggle that Dai & Amanda have to come to the realization that they can’t fight the attraction to each other.  But first they have to learn to trust blindly.

I liked the world that Shona created with the Shadowlands and the Fixed Realms.  There are so many threads weaved together to make up these worlds. I never really thought of Goblins as appealing but Dai & Roan make the idea very appealing.  I look forward to the next book in the Shadowland series For the Love a Goblin Warrior.
