Guest blogger: Julie Ann Walker talks about the first book Hell or High Water in her new Deep Six Series + giveaway

HellorHighWaterGraphic3

Hi everyone!  My name is Julie Ann Walker and I’m tickled pink to be here today talking about my BRAND SPANKING NEW romantic suspense series, Deep Six!  It revolves around six newly retired Navy SEALs who just can’t seem to shake their past and the Navy SEAL motto that “the only easy day was yesterday.”  Set in the Florida Keys, the series is filled with sun, sand, danger, intrigue, adventure, and plenty of half-dressed alpha hotties.  LOL!  Sound like a good time?  I guarantee it is!  And I guarantee you’re going to fall in love with these six men.

Take Leo “The Lion” Anderson.  With his sun-streaked, sandy blond hair and perpetual tan — not to mention those hazel eyes and beard stubble — he’s sure to win your heart.  And that’s before you get to his no-bullshit, take-command-of-any-situation attitude and the fact that he’s trying to fulfill his father’s dying wish.

Then there’s Brando “Bran” Pallidino.  A native New Jerseyan, Bran grew up on the mean streets of Newark.  He’s rough.  He’s tough.  And his Italian-American heritage means he comes complete with soulful brown eyes, a face that belongs on billboards, and a love for good food and good wine.  (That last part means his beer-loving teammates give him a lot of grief. *wink*)

You won’t be able to resist Mason “Monet” McCarthy.  As a boy from Beantown, Mason learned to use the F-bomb in really colorful ways.  He’s big.  He’s burly.  He’s not the kind of guy you’d like to meet in a dark alley.  Yet his thick black hair and crystal blue eyes soften what would otherwise be an entirely intimidating appearance.

Who doesn’t love a country boy?  Dalton “Doc” Simmons was born and raised in Montana.  He’s a lean, mean, fighting machine, with a face that’s all angles as if it’s been carved down to its barest essentials by a hot, stinging prairie wind.  Doc has a tragic past.  And he’s fighting to come to terms with it.

Next up is Ray “Wolf” Roanhorse.  Wolf’s Cherokee heritage makes him strikingly handsome, with a blade of a nose, high cheekbones, flashing black eyes, and a lush, beautifully-shaped mouth.  Born into poverty on a reservation in Oklahoma, Wolf has more than himself to worry about.  He has his whole family depending on him.  But if anyone can shoulder that burden, it’s Wolf.

And last but certainly not least, we have Spiro “Romeo” Delgado.  Romeo likes to play up that whole Latin-lover thing.  And with his swarthy skin, precisely trimmed goatee, and honed physique, he does a pretty good job of it.  But that’s just what’s on the surface.  Underneath it all, Romeo is desperately trying to make up for the mistakes of his past.

See?  What did I tell you?  You love them already, don’t you?  Read on for a bonus scene from HELL OR HIGH WATER where you get to meet all of the Deep Six heroes!

Only two things could make former Navy SEAL Leo Anderson return to the world of weapons and warfare. First, a capsule of chemical weapons lost on the ocean floor, and second, a plea for assistance from the one woman he can’t seem to forget-CIA Agent Olivia Mortier.

Now, working together to race against the clock and a deadly terrorist faction, Leo and Olivia must find the missing capsule, all the while battling the intense desire burning between them. If they can survive, can their growing attraction become more than just a momentary flare?

HELL OR HIGH WATER Bonus Scene

Family isn’t only determined by blood, but by those who stand by you, fightin’ for you. By those you stand beside and fight for…

That was the thought that drifted through Leo “The Lion” Anderson’s head when he looked around the warped wooden table at his men. Correction—the minute those five wild-ass SEALs snapped their final salute to the Navy and followed him to the Florida Keys to join him on his quest for high seas adventure and the hunt for untold riches, they stopped being his men. But they would never stop being his family. If they all lived for a hundred years, the bonds of the blood, sweat, and tears they’d shed together would never come unbound. They were too strong, forged in the fiery crucible of too many wars and missions to count.

“Yo, man!” Brando “Bran” Pallidino leaned close to be heard above the twanging voice and guitar licks of the singer on the stage. The six of them had spent the day in Key West, gathering supplies and finishing up some repairs on Wayfarer I—the leaking, rusty salvage boat Leo had inherited from his father. And now they were enjoying beers and dinner at Schooner Wharf bar, the open-air establishment that saw more than its fair share of revelers, crusty sea captains, and miscreants who’d come to the end of the road in a bid to fall off the map completely. “That brunette in the yellow bikini top and flowery skirt over by the taps keeps giving you come-and-get-me-big-boy looks.”

Leo glanced at the woman and sure enough. Slam! Her gaze collided with his and there was a definite suggestion glowing in her big, dark eyes. “I think she wants you to poke her hontas,” Bran concluded.

Leo scowled at his best friend as a subtle breeze drifted in from the water, mixing the smells of fish and marine fuel with the sweeter aromas of boat drinks and barley hops that continuously flowed from behind the bar. “How long have you been keeping that little gem in your pocket?” he asked Bran.

“Came up with it just this minute.” Bran grinned, wiggling his eyebrows. “My mind,” he continued, “is as nimble and as fertile as a…”

Leo held up a hand. “Don’t finish that analogy. I can already guess what your mind is as nimble and as fertile as.”

“Personally,” Doc said from Leo’s opposite side, twirling the ever-present toothpick in his mouth in a wide circle, “I would have gone with, ‘I think she wants you to engage her in a little gland-to-gland combat.’” Dalton “Doc” Simmons had one of those tough Midwestern faces. But right now it was split in a gleeful grin that made him look almost boyish. It was damn good to see Doc smiling. For too many years he hadn’t.

“She wants you to rock her casbah!” Spiro “Romeo” Delgado piped up from across the table, never one to miss an opportunity to toss in his two bits.

“Churn her butter,” Ray “Wolf” Roanhorse added after plunking his Budweiser bottle down on the table. He turned and slow-winked at the bird in the yellow bikini. Leo watched the brunette’s eyes widen, her head cocking like a cat considering a canary. With his Cherokee heritage, Wolf was the embodiment of the original American warrior. His visage equally fierce and—according to the lady at the hardware store this morning—beautiful. She’d breathed the word while staring all googly-eyed at Wolf.

“And you?” Leo turned to the last remaining man at the table. “What ridiculous euphemism have you come up with tonight?”

Mason “Monet” McCarthy was as big as a mountain, and just as silent. Usually. But even he couldn’t resist joining in. “She wants you to rumble in her jungle,” he said. His south Boston accent making it sound more like rahmble inna jahngle.

And that’s the thing about family, Leo thought with a shake of his head as he slid on his aviator sunglasses despite the fact that the sun had slipped beneath the western horizon. One minute they’re standin’ with you against the world. The next minute they’re bustin’ your balls.

And he wouldn’t have it any other way. Especially since the good-natured ribbing, immature as it might be, was proof positive they were all slowly crawling out from under the thick blanket of mourning that had descended over them, heavy as a death shroud when—

“Yo, man,” Bran interrupted his thoughts. “You better stake your claim. If you don’t, Wolf’s gonna stake his.”

“He’s welcome to it,” Leo said, leaning back in his chair and picking at the label on his Budweiser with the edge of his thumbnail. “’Cause I’m takin’ a pass on this one.”

Bran groaned and took a long slug of his beer.

“What?” Leo demanded, frowning. “What’s that uuuugh for?”

“Just that I coulda guessed as much.” Bran shrugged a shoulder, his holey tank-top accentuating the strength and sinew of his bare arms. According to Bran, if the sun’s out, the guns are out. Bran’s unending supply of tank tops had become a running joke between all of them. Leo’s balls weren’t the only ones that received a regular busting. Every man’s in the group were fair game.

“And why would you have guessed as much?” he raised a brow.

Bran leveled him with a look that called into question the validity of his IQ tests. “You’re kidding me, right?”

“No,” Leo shook his head, feeling his temper flicker to life. What the hell was Bran getting at? Luckily—or unluckily?—he didn’t have to wait long to find out.

“It’s just that this seems to be your new modus operandus,” Bran said.

“What does?”

“Eschewing the soft ministration and willing company of bar bunnies,” Doc interjected.

Leo scowled over at him, then swung his gaze around to each man at the table. They all wore the same expression of agreement.

Okay, and this is one of those times I wish these assholes weren’t my family. Because he could certainly do without them being all up in his goddamn business.

“First off,” he said in his own defense, “after all that runnin’ around today, I’m too tired to sweat, much less do anything else. Secondly, when you start talkin’ bar bunnies, I only have one thought.”

“What’s that?” Wolf asked, only giving him half his attention. The other half was securely focused on Miss Yellow Bikini Top who, having quickly picked up the disinterest Leo was laying down, was now giving Wolf all her come-and-get-me-big-boy looks.

“Hippety hoppety herpes is on its way,” Leo said, his lips twitching when Wolf blanched and swung around to attempt to fry his eyebrows off with a look.

“You really know how to spoil it for those of us not currently hung up on…” Wolf trailed to a stop.

The hair on Leo’s head tried to crawl off his scalp. Wolf didn’t need to finish. Leo knew where he was heading. “I’m not hung up on anyone,” he insisted, disgusted to realize he was trying to convince himself more than the guys. An image of Special Agent Olivia Mortier flashed before his eyes. Black hair. Blue eyes. A slightly crooked front tooth that never failed to make his dick twitch. There was just something about that tooth. That tiny imperfection amidst so much beauty only seemed to enhance her appeal. Maybe because it made her real. A real, live, hot-blooded woman with a mind like a steel trap, a wit that was as sharp as a tack and—

Fuck. Maybe he was hung up on her. The wall he’d built up in his mind, the one that was supposed to keep memories of her at bay, was proving frustratingly weak.

“If that’s what you have to tell yourself, cabron,” Romeo said.

Leo sat there, a muscle twitching in his jaw. He refused to respond for nearly thirty seconds. He knew it was thirty seconds because he calculated that for every two seconds that passed he came up with a new way to assassinate the men at the table. He’d totaled out at fifteen.

“You should see your face,” Doc said, the salty sea breeze causing the ends of his shaggy hair to riot. “You look like someone shoved a cactus up your ass.”

“And yo, man,” Bran slung an arm around his shoulders, “there’s no reason to get all hot under the collar.”

“The only reason my collar is hot is ’cause your sweaty arm is around it,” Leo grumbled, shrugging off Bran’s brotherly embrace and taking a hasty swig of beer. Thoughts of Olivia always made him feel punchy.Talking about her, even obliquely, made him feel…something. It was like if horny and confused got together with uncomfortable and had a threesome his current emotional state would be the unholy offspring of the encounter.

“I was born on a farm where we used lots of fertilizer,” Doc said, seemingly apropos of nothing.

Leo turned to him. “And that’s relevant to this because…?” He made a rolling motion with his hand.

“Because it means I know bullshit when I smell it.”

Bran grabbed his belly, crowing like the idiot he was. “You shoulda known better than to ask, bro.”

Leo was considering the most painful way to wipe the grin from Bran’s face when Mason said, “You fuckers need to back the fuck off and leave him the fuck alone.” The man rarely spoke, but when he did his sentences were littered with F-bombs. Mason once told them that was the Southie way. The word fuck could be used as every part of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs…

“Of course you’re the one to jump to his defense when it comes to rebuffing the babes,” Bran scoffed.

“Now what the fuck’s that supposed to mean?” Mason demanded, the vein running up the center of his forehead beginning to pulse.

“How long has it been since—”

Leo figured he better cut Bran off before he went any further. Number one, because Leo could see the bull’s eye was about to slide off his chest and attach itself to Mason’s. And since Mason had come to his rescue…well, then turn about was fair play. And number two, because Leo knew just how much talk of Mason’s past—and the effect Mason’s past was still having on his present—bothered him. “Gentleman,” he said, “I think it’s best of we table this topic of conversation.”

To his great delight, right at that moment their waitress appeared with a tray laden with chicken wings and conch fritters, two of Key West’s official delicacies. “And speakin’ of tables, wait ’til you see what’s about to be laid on ours.”

With a flourish the waitress unloaded the tray. She’d barely stepped back before the feeding frenzy began. As the flavor of buffalo sauce mixed with hops and barley on Leo’s tongue, he once again looked around at the five men who’d been with him through thick and thin. The five men who’d bugged out of the Navy with him after they all made that soul-shaking promise to a dying brother to start living life.

Ones that weren’t filled with death and destruction. These meatheads might be a constant pain in Leo’s ass, but they also happened to be a constant comfort and an unending source of entertainment.

Like family, his mind circled back to its original topic. And it gave him a sense of peace. A sense of contentment. A sense of…urgency. Because they were all depending on him to come through with the big score. He felt the weight of that responsibility as surely as an anchor chain around his shoulders. They’d all made that promise, and now it was up to him to help them make good on it.

Letting his gaze skim out over the marina, he watched as the boats bobbed gently with the tide. Their metal fittings caught the rays of the full moon and glinted as sweetly as the treasure Leo and the guys were ready to start hunting. The Santa Cristina, that legendary ghost galleon, the holy grail of sunken Spanish shipwrecks…she was out there. Somewhere.

And come hell or high water, we’re goin’ to find her…

But time is running out. The killer is growing bolder by the hour, and Ellie and Grant must find him before the children become his next victims.

Exclusive Excerpt – Hour of Need by Melinda Leigh

“Shh.” Ellie wrapped her arms around Grant’s waist and hugged him.

Shocked, he pulled back, but she tightened her hold. Grant, ignoring the warning signals from his conscience, returned the embrace. He rested his forehead on her hair and accepted the comfort she offered. His heart stirred in an uncomforatble and dangerous spiral. He liked this. Too much. This was the sort of thing his married friends missed while they were deployed: human contact, shared emotions. For a second, he thought maybe it was worth missing. But no, that would be selfish. This wasn’t just about him. It wouldn’t be fair to Ellie to start something he couldn’t finish. He moved every year or so, and if he really wanted to be a general, he didn’t need emotional ties tempting him to turn down assignments that could further his career. It was much easier to remain emotionally detached, because until this week, that’s what he’d been. Grant had spent most of his adult life alone and aloof, avoiding personal connections and complications.

But damn. He couldn’t seem to let go of this soft woman in his arms.

She sighed, and her body relaxed. She shifted, leaning back. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

Her warm brown eyes filled with empathy. “That this all happened to you. You haven’t had time to grieve.”

A small shudder passed through him, followed by a wave of need he couldn’t explain or deny, except that his soul was an empty shell. He pressed his lips to hers and let the taste of her fill the void inside him.

Books-n-Kisses is super excited to have Zane from Rebecca Zanetti Marked on the blog today.  MARKED is the last book in Ms. Zanetti Dark Protector’s series.   While I am so very sad to see this series come to an end, but I am excited to finally learn more about Zane.   There have been so many questions about what and who Zane is.  And how he will help or hinder the Janie Kayrs.   So let’s see if we can get some information from Zane so we can figure out what he is.  But before we do that let’s take a quick look at MARKED.

Marked

Zane is a battle-hardened warrior, used to command and solitude. But Janie has drawn him from the minute they met. His need for her could destroy everything he’s worked for, but the risk is too sweet not to take it. They call her the Chosen One. But when it comes down to the questions of peace or war, life or death, safety or passion, it will be Janie who makes the choice.
*****
Now on to the interview.

Kelly:  Hi Zane, Welcome to Books-n-Kisses

Zane:  Ah, Hi, Kelly.  I’m new to the interview scene, so go easy on me, will you?  J

Kelly: Thank you for taking time away from your busy……. schedule to sit down with me to take to talk about…. well you.

Zane:  Sure.  Not much is going on right now besides war, world catastrophe, and my unsettled love life.

Kelly: Okay I have to ask because everyone wants to know. What are you?

Zane:  Just a regular guy, I think.  I mean, I’m a soldier and part vampire, but really, I’m just a normal soldier with maybe a couple of secrets thrown in.  I like beer, football, inventing new weapons.  You know.  Normal guy stuff.

Kelly: Okay *thinks to self: so that didn’t work*  How about a game of 20 questions?

Zane:  I do love a good game.  Usually when I win, I take over a continent, though.

Kelly: Sounds good.

Zane:  All right – shoot them my way.

Kelly: Questions #1: What is your favorite color?

Zane:  Blue – the exact color of Janie’s eyes.

Kelly: Questions #2: Do you have any magical powers?

Zane:  Yes.

Kelly: Questions #3: Who is your favorite person in the whole world?

Zane:  Janie Belle Kayrs would have to be number one.  But I also like my brothers, usually.  Their names are Sam and Logan.

Kelly: Questions #4: What are you?

Zane:  Just a regular guy.

Kelly: Questions #5: Who is your least favorite person in the world?

Zane:  I’d have to say Kalin, who’s a Kurjan, is probably my least favorite person.  It’s hard to completely hate him, though.  We’ve known each other since we were kids, and even when you don’t like somebody, there’s a type of bond you get with people you’ve known forever, you know?  I hope I don’t have to kill him, but to save Janie, I may have to.  I’m prepared.

Kelly: Questions #6: How tall are you?

Zane:  Last time I checked, I was about 6’6.

Kelly: Questions #7:  Do you drink blood?

Zane:  I’m part vampire, so I do drink blood during battle or maybe during sex.  We don’t need blood to survive and can make our own.  I plan on biting Janie, just so you know.

Kelly: Questions #8:  Do you dream walk with anyone except Janie?

Zane:  No.  Well, Kalin shows up sometimes, but Janie’s the draw for us both.  Kalin and I have never met in the dream world without Janie.

Kelly: Questions #9:  What are you?

Zane:  A realist.  I enjoy the romances throughout the Realm, but really?  I don’t see myself having a happy ending.  Of course, I hope I’m wrong about that.

Kelly: Questions #10: Tell me your favorite thing about Janie?

Zane:  She’s smart as hell and a complete smartass.  The smartass part is just a cover-up to keep everyone around her calm.  She really has a huge heart, and she’s incredibly fragile but has no clue how true that is.  Fate and destiny weigh heavily on her, and I have a feeling she’s about to meet both.  She’ll win, though.  She has to.

Kelly: Questions #11: Football or Basketball?

Zane:  Football.  I have two brothers, and we like to hit things.

Kelly: Questions #12: What do you do for a living?

Zane:  I’m a soldier and a pretty damn good assassin.  That weighs on me, to be honest.

Kelly: Questions #13: How much can you deadlift?

Zane:  Two vampires and a Kurjan.

Kelly: Questions #14:  What are you?

Zane:  A guy about to make a move to get the woman I’ve loved for years.  That makes me more dangerous than I’ve ever been, but I’m okay with that now.

Kelly: Questions #15:  If you could go anywhere in the world for one night where would you go?

Zane:  Well, okay.  Don’t tell anybody, but I do have a retreat in the wilds of Alaska where I just get away from everybody and everything once in a while.  I love that place.

Kelly: Questions #16:  Whom would you take with you on the one night?

Zane:  Janie Belle Kayrs, but she’d probably be mad if I kidnapped her.  Not that I kidnap her or anything.  Really.  Trust me.  J

Kelly: Questions #17:  Whom do you work for?

Zane:  If I told you who I worked for, I’d have to make sure you couldn’t tell anybody else, and I don’t know of any nice way to do that.  So let’s just say I do have a job, and it’s bloody.

Kelly: Questions #18: Naughty or Nice?

Zane:  Naughty.  Life is too short for Nice.

Kelly: Questions #19: What are you?

Zane:  Who are any of us?  I guess it’d depend who you asked as to who I am.  I’ve got friends, I’ve got enemies, and I’ve got Janie Belle Kayrs.  Whether she considers herself friend or enemy, I don’t know yet.  But I do know that she’s mine, so we’ll have to figure it all out, won’t we?

Kelly: Questions #20:  Okay fine. Final question Boxers or Briefs?

Zane:  Who has time for either?

Kelly:  Okay seriously Zane, Off the record.  What are you?

Zane:   Okay, seriously.  Off the record.  Read MARKED.  At the end of Chapter 1, both you and Janie will know exactly what I am.  Let’s hope you’re not as pissed as Janie is.  I do have a plan, you know.

8686057For my first interview, this is been a lot of fun.  To celebrate, I’d love to give away a print copy of FATED, the first book in the Dark Protector series, to a commenter here.  Kelly will randomly draw a name.  Just so you know, the book is about Talen Kayrs, who’s Janie’s father.  The first time I met him, it, ah, didn’t go so well.

Here’s the blurb:

The damn earth ground to a stop. A weapon hit the pavement a yard away. Dage Kayrs’s eyes widened, and Moira Kayrs gasped.

Zane sighed and focused just as a locomotive the size of Talen Kayrs tackled him midsection, throwing him ten yards and landing hard on his chest. Zane’s head crashed onto the asphalt. Stars exploded behind his eyeballs, and unbearable pain cut into his brain. He tried to concentrate, to say something, when a fist plowed into his face.

Unconsciousness was a fucking blessing.

 WHAT IS WITH MIKE McCAULEY?

Every time Delilah Webster runs into Mike McCauley, he practically bites her head off. The rough-and-tumble contractor clearly has baggage. Del has her own emotional scars and knows she’s better off keeping her distance, but Mike’s temptation in jeans and a T-shirt and she’s always been good with her hands…

There’s something about the strong-willed mechanic that sets Mike’s motor running—and scares the hell out of him. Mike has loved and lost and will never hurt like that again, even if that means walking away from a woman who makes him feel alive for the first time in years.

When a simple kiss turns hot and heavy, Mike discovers he can’t stay away, no matter how certain he is they’re destined to crash and burn…

Caffeine addict, boy referee, and romance aficionado, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author MARIE HARTE is a confessed bibliophile and devotee of action movies. Teaser #3 Excerpt:

She circled the car to unlock his door. He closed in on her instead of moving back so she could open it. Hell. She could feel his breath on her neck and did her best not to shiver. “You want to back up and give me some space?”

“You have plenty of space. You’re little.”

“Please. I’m tall. You’re just a giant.” She turned. Big mistake. Because it put her in his arms, a hairsbreadth from his fine chest and those glorious muscles he’d used to incapacitate Jim in seconds. Jim had been drunk, yes, but he was a mean drunk and a decent fighter.

Mike had taken him down with little effort. So strong. Bad-ass. Just her type.

“You’re not that big,” Mike said in a low voice. “Just right for—”

She cut him off by dragging his neck down and plastering her mouth to his. For a moment, he remained still, and she wondered if she’d made a huge mistake. Handsome, sexy, probably rich Mike McCauley wouldn’t want some cool chick like Del. He’d be after a Suzie-homemaker like his moth—

He kissed her back, taking charge of the embrace. Mike put his hands on her head to hold her in place while he kissed the ever-living breath out of her. She’d never felt so surrounded before. Del had dated larger men, but Mike dwarfed her. So big, so hot, so damn sexy.

He tasted like chocolate chip cookies, and that sweetness made her melt. He knew how to use his lips and tongue to maximum advantage. When he leaned in to her, she thanked her stars she hadn’t zipped up her jacket. He pressed his chest against her breasts, and she sagged against the car, weak with desire.

He pulled back to look at her. His eyes had darkened to a sapphire blue. His lips were slick, his mouth taut, a furious hunger on his face. “I knew you’d be like this.”

Before she could ask what “this” meant, he dug his fingers into her hair, holding her in place while he angled her chin up and dove in for a second kiss.

MH3-cropped200A little about Marie:

I’ve been writing as far back as I can remember. Interest in the written word, no doubt spawned by my English teacher father, continues to this day. I’m a voracious reader, gobbling everything from romance to horror to fantasy and more. I’m in love with the art of putting pen to paper…so to speak.

I majored in English from Penn State University, earning a B.A. in Liberal Arts, as well as a commission in the United States Marine Corps. Five years later, after serving as a communications officer, I left the service to focus more on family. After going through an assortment of jobs–the Marine Corps Reserve, an IT representative, a middle manager for a Fortune 500 transportation company–I stopped working to raise two new additions to the family–my youngest sons. During this period, I decided to stop dreaming and start seriously writing.

In December of 2004 my first story was published, and I haven’t looked back since.  I currently have over a hundred titles (yeah, shocked me too!) with Carina, Ellora’s Cave, Fated Desires, Loose Id, Samhain, Sourcebooks, and Totally Bound.

I’ve received several awards to include: the 2005 Passionate Plume for Scifi/fantasy romance, the 2006 Amber Quill Heat Wave contest winner, 1st Place in Steamy Erotic romance for the 2006 Lories, finalist in the 2007 Linda Howard Award of Excellence, finalist in the 2008 Reveal Your Inner Vixen MRWA contest, and finalist in the 2012 Reveal Your Inner Vixen MRWA contest.

Kelly’s interview with Kendra Elliot & Melinda Leigh

I am so excited to have two of my favorite authors on the blog today.  I mean super excited!!!!

I just love Kendra & Melinda.  I have had the great pleasure of meeting Kendra and she such a sweet person.

I have yet to meet Melinda in person but in talking with her online I know she is the real deal.

To say I was beyond excited that these two are teaming up to write a 4 novella series is an understatement.   So how about we talk to the ladies and find out how this all came about and the trials and tribulations of writing together.

*****

Hi Kendra & Melinda! Welcome back to the blog.  This will be the first time you are on the blog at the same time.  I am super excited to have you both here.

So normally I start off by asking you to tell us a little bit about yourself.  But since I have you both here how about you tell me a little about one another.

Kendra, please tell me about Melinda: Don’t underestimate her! She may be tiny but she will kick your ass with her martial arts skills. She’s got a dry sense of humor, passionately loves all animals, and likes her vodka tonics. She overflows with energy, loves to talk with strangers, and can turn into a protective mama bear in a split second. I won’t tell you how often she gets her hair colored.

Melinda, please tell me about Kendra: She dotes on her daughters, loves Project Runway, and gives her beer options careful consideration. Kendra has a dog that looks like an Ewok. Dog lovers should go to her Facebook page just to see a picture of Max. Adorable! Kendra   On the hair color: I won’t tell if she won’t.

Kelly: You both write in the romance suspense genre.  Have you ever been mistaken for one another?

KE: Recently a review on one of Melinda’s books suggested we were pen names for the same person. We got a good laugh out of that. Readers occasionally mix us up. We’ve both been mistaken for writing the other person’s books on Goodreads or in reviews and blogs.

ML: People have also commented that we look enough alike to be sisters.

Nope not the same person
Nope not the same person

Kelly: If so can you explain why you are not the same person? And how people might think you are?

KE: Only someone crazy could have managed to write all our titles within the last three years. I like to think our quality of writing couldn’t be met by someone writing that fast. I know Melinda’s nearly gone nuts meeting just her own schedule.
ML: We have photographic evidence there are two of us! But we do write in the same genre, and since we share a publisher, there is a small amount of similarity in our book covers and sometimes we share promotion.  That could explain the confusion.

Kelly: Have you thought about writing in a different genre? If yes, which one?

KE: I considered writing a Young Adult historical. Something like Outlander for teens. But romantic suspense has been really good to me, so I want to focus on maintaining that momentum.

ML: I love all sorts of fiction. Writing a straight mystery thriller sounds like fun, but right now I’m enjoying being able to blend genres however I choose. Each book comes out a bit different.

Kelly: I have to say when I found out that the two of you were teaming up to write a set of novellas I was super excited.  What made you finally decided to take the plunge and work together?

KE: We’d remarked casually on it a few times but never thought about it seriously. I think we’d believed the only way to do it was to collaborate on a single book which is VERY complicated with two opinionated authors. In 2013, I got an early copy of Allison Brennan’s and Laura Griffin’s CRASH AND BURN in which they each wrote their own story but made them related and a light bulb went off.

ML: Yes! Writing one book together seemed difficult given we live on opposite coasts. The idea of related stories quickly evolved into a television-like series. Each novella has it’s own plot, but there’s also an overall plot arc to carry the reader from one story to the next, like episodes in a TV series.  Plotting together was a lot of fun.

Kelly: How did you come up with the idea of the Rogue River series?

KE: Hmmm. How I remember it was that we knew we wanted to each write from the point of view of two sisters. We wanted them to have a big family. And live in a small town. And water needed to be prominent in the title and books. We tossed around a few river names and I remember Melinda really liking the sound of the Rogue River. Maybe Melinda remembers more…

ML:  Magic? I flew out to Seattle to visit our publisher, and Kendra drove up. We plotted all four novellas in one day. Yes, there was definitely magic involved in getting that done so quickly.

Kelly: Whose idea was it to have it set in Oregon?

KE: Melinda was polite and offered to go with my home state. I needed to be comfortable and write about an area I knew. Melinda is tougher than that.

ML: I knew I could rely on Kendra to fill me in on any necessary local details.

Kelly: Are any of your characters Oregon State Beaver fans?

KE: NO

Kelly: Boo!!  “Go Beavs”

ML:  Whispers, “What’s an Oregon State beaver?”

Kelly: *GASP* we will talk after Melinda

Kelly: Ladies, can you give us a look at the 1st novella in this series, which is written by Kendra ‘On Her Father’s Grave’ (released October 7th).

KE: In a small town like Solitude, Oregon, keeping a secret can be murder.

Stevie Taylor had left her sleepy Oregon hometown for a more exciting life. But after her police chief father passes away, the LAPD cop returns to Solitude and signs on as a patrol officer, hoping to heal from her loss…and from the horrific things she’s seen in the city.

In Solitude, everyone knows everyone else’s business—and, to Stevie’s dismay, local gossip soon ties her to the new police chief and a man from her past. Tragedy then shakes up the small town when a teenager dies after taking a strange new drug. Now, the seasoned LA cop must hunt down the dealer while investigating the most important case of her life, one that could divide her tranquil town.

Kelly: How about we take a look at the second novella in the series, which is written by Melinda ‘Gone To Her Grave’ (released October 21st)

ML: In Solitude, Oregon, everyone has secrets…and some will kill to keep them.

When she believes a teen is falsely accused of drug dealing, social worker Carly Taylor takes on a high-risk case and her estranged husband—the detective in charge of the investigation—to prove the boy innocent. A deadly new designer drug has taken hold of her small rural hometown of Solitude, Oregon, and Carly is determined to find the real dealer and clear the teen’s name. But the deeper she digs into the case, the more danger she unearths, until someone decides it’s time for Carly to move on…permanently.

Investigator Seth Harding knows he can’t stop his wife when she has a child to protect. But he risks any chance of reconciliation with Carly if he can’t learn to accept her dangerous job. When a drug dealer decides Carly is getting too close, will Seth lose her altogether?

Kelly: I know that there will be 4 novella’s in the Rogue River series, book 3 Her Grave Secret by Kendra and book 4 Walking on Her Grave by Melinda will both be out in November.  Is there potential for more?  Or maybe a spin-off?

KE: Oy. We introduced a big cast. I think there is always potential for more. But I feel like I’ve been living and breathing the Rogue River for several months in addition to writing my novels. I’m ready for a break, but it might look different in the future. Writing books is like childbirth. Down the road you forget the pain. I’m excited each time I start a new project, but I get a tenth of the way in and start asking why I keep doing this.

ML: You never know!  It was a fun project. I love tackling a new and different challenge to add variety to my work, but it was also tough to juggle two extra novellas with my full-length writing commitments. I didn’t see much of my family between January and May of 2014.  But stories are like Jell-O. There’s always room for more.

Kelly : What was the hardest part about writing a story together?

KE: Seriously, writing together wasn’t hard. We knew the other person was disciplined and would get done what needed to be done. With each of us writing our own novellas, it allowed us to write as we pleased. It protected our voices and gave us the decision making power over our particular books. We never felt forced to compromise something or rewrite something because the other person didn’t like it. We read each other’s work for continuity and brainstormed together when one of us got stuck.

ML: The plotting process was more complicated that we expected, with four separate stories and an overall storyline to keep in line, but having a writing partner was helpful.  If one of us got stuck while writing, there was another person equally invested in the story ready to jump in and offer suggestions. Typically, writing is a solo event, and when you’re stuck, you’re all alone.

Kelly: Do you think that you will work together on another project in the future?

KE: I’d love to but I know we both have tight schedules to meet. My first love is full-length novels. The novellas are fun and have been great to experiment with, but I think we both want to focus on getting our novels written.

ML: The novellas were a fun change of pace, but also I love digging into a long, complicated (and dark) plot.

Kelly: I have an idea for you!!!  You should team up to write a story about a kick-ass accountant/part time blogger who is an Oregon State Beaver fan who solves a cold case by total accident.  And yes, you can base her off me.

KE: Ummm…

ML:   Sounds interesting…

Kelly: Why do you have blank stares?  It is a good idea!!!

KE: *hands off to Melinda*

ML: Oh, look at the time.

Kelly: Fine moving on…..

9781477824238_p0_v2_s260x420Kelly to Melinda:  You have two ongoing series right now, the ‘Midnight series’ and the ‘She Can series’. Midnight Betrayal which was release in September 2014 is your latest book.  Can you tell us a little about Midnight Betrayal (which was awesome, check out my review here).

ML:  In Midnight Betrayal, a museum curator falls for the prime suspect in the grisly murder of an intern. It’s an edgy, dark, and sexy read.

Kelly: It looks like you have the start of a new series to The Scarlet Falls series.  Book one Hour of Need is scheduled to be released on December 9, 2014.  Tell us a little about Hour of Need.

ML:  After the murder of his brother and sister-in-law, Major Grant Barrett returns home from Afghanistan to take temporary custody of their young children only to learn that his six-year-old nephew saw the killer and has become the next target.

Kelly: What is next for you after Hour of Need?

ML: I’m currently working on book 2 in the Scarlet Falls series. My working title is Minutes to Kill, and the tentative release date is June 2015.  On a business trip, Hannah Barrett witnesses a crime and soon learns that what happens in Vegas can follow you home. Next on my plate (probably) is another She Can book for December 2015. I have a few possible characters in mind.  I’ve always thought Sarah Mitchell deserves her own story after everything she endured in SHE CAN TELL.

Kelly to Kendra:  You have two ongoing series also, the ‘Bone Secret series’ and your new series the ‘Callahan & McLane Series’.  Bridged, book two in the Callahan series is to be released on January 13, 2015 can you tell us a little about Mason’s next adventure.

22470990KE: In BRIDGED, Mason and Ava are assigned to the same serial killer case. A killer is hanging dead bodies off the bridges in the Portland metropolitan area. Of course, Ava’s unbalanced twin Jayne manages to disrupt everything she can in Ava’s life while Ava and Mason take the next step in their relationship.

Kelly: Well we get any more Bone Secret novels?

KE: Yes. First SPIRALED, the third Callahan and McLane book will be out next summer and then my publisher has requested a fifth Bone Secrets book for January 2016. I have no idea who will be featured in that book.

Kelly: Seriously I am thinking the book idea of that kick-ass accountant needs to be on your to do list.

KE: Maybe a forensic accountant…I’ve heard of them…I have no idea what they do, but it sounds like a Bone Secrets book.

ML: There’s no reason an accountant can’t kick major ass, but as a former banker, the thought of writing a story involving the financial sector gives me hives.

Kelly: Fine!!! But, I still think it is a good idea.

Kelly: Is there anything else you would like to add or any deep dark secrets you want to share about each other with your readers?

KE: Melinda doesn’t like sweet mixed drinks. She says my drinks are froo-froo. But we share a weakness for all things chocolate and ice cream.

ML: And coffee! Which is like oxygen for writers.

Kelly: Again ladies, Thank you so very much for coming on the blog I love you both (Top #12 baby) and hope that you keep writing amazing books.
Kendra we need that cake date soon!
Melinda I hope to meet you in person very soon!!

KE: You’re my number one blogger-girl, Kelly!
ML:  Thanks so much for hosting us. Kelly rocks!

Kelly: And now you know why these two are two of my all time favorites!!!!

Kelly’s interview with Jaci Burton

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome back the awesome Jaci Burton to the blog.  To chat about life, influences and her newest release Hope Burns.

Jaci Burton Photo by Steve ErvinJaci, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I live in Oklahoma with my husband and my dogs. Between us we have three grown kids and several grandchildren. I’ve been writing for thirteen years, published for eleven. I’ve written over sixty books so far, and have no intention of stopping any time soon.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Not always. I’ve been reading romance since I was a teenager. I dabbled a bit in writing romance in my early adult life, but working and raising kids was my priority then, and writing was backburnered until I had more time.

Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

My writing was influenced by all those awesome authors I read for so many years when I was young and first started reading romance. Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers, Johanna Lindsey, Elizabeth Lowell, Karen Robards.  They all made me fall in love with the genre and kept me reading. My favorite writers today are Julie James, Maya Banks, Shannon Stacey, Jill Shalvis, Nora Roberts, Nalini Singh and so many more.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

When I first published, I wrote in several genres—not only contemporary, but paranormal, suspense, futuristic and fantasy. It was a way to get my feet wet and decide what I wanted to write. But I always came back to contemporary romance. It’s what I love to write the most, a genre I’m most comfortable in.

What are some of your writing rituals?

I don’t know that I have any rituals. Other than coffee first thing in the morning. I go through email and social media to see what’s happening out there while my mind is waking up. Then I’ll start writing.

9780425259788_medium_Hope_BurnsCan you please tell us about HOPE BURNS?

HOPE BURNS is the story of Carter Richards and Molly Burnett, two people who reunite after being apart for many years. They have a history together, and a painful past that must be overcome before the two of them can have a future.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

When I wrote HOPE FLAMES, the first full-length story in the Hope series, it featured Emma Burnett, Molly’s sister. Molly appeared in the book, but only by phone. There was a mystery to her, a reason why she never returned to Hope. I knew then that I needed to write her story.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m currently working on Love After All, Book 4 in the Hope series. It’s about Chelsea and Bash, two characters I love so much.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

There’s a holiday parade in progress in downtown Hope. Molly’s one of the judges.

What would you be if you were not an author?

Probably still working in corporate life. Dealing with spreadsheets and budgets and personnel issues. Did I mention I’m very happy to be a writer? 😉

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I can’t wait for He’s So Fine by Jill Shalvis. I love and adore her Lucky Harbor series. And I’m really looking forward to Maya Banks’ Keep Me Safe, the first book her new series.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I’m so excited about the reissue of my Wild Riders series with new cover art. Hot men on hot motorcycles. Really, everyone should check them out! And thanks so much for letting me be a guest here on your site!

A little about Jaci:

Sheldon’s Interview Zach and Lisette from Dianne Duvall’s Night Unbound

Thank you for joining me!  I’m happy to be here today, celebrating the release of NIGHT UNBOUND, the fifth book in my Immortal Guardians paranormal romance series.  If you like powerful heroes, kick-ass heroines, action scenes that will keep you flipping pages well past your bedtime, and romance that is alternately sweet and steamy and laced with humor, then I hope you’ll pick up a copy, because you’ll find all of this in Zach and Lisette’s story.  😉

My friends on Facebook thoughtfully provided some Hot Seat questions for Sheldon, one of the human characters in NIGHT UNBOUND, to ask Zach and Lisette that I hope will help you get to know them a little better:

Sheldon:  *opens a small spiral notebook*  Okay.  The first interview didn’t go quite the way I’d hoped, so I’m just going to ask you some hot seat questions this time.  Cats or dogs?

Lisette:  Cats.

Zach:  I’ve never had a pet, so I’m ambivalent.

Sheldon:  You’ve never had a pet?

Zach:  No.

Sheldon:  That sucks.  Vampires or shifters?

Lisette:  I have to listen to the thoughts of psychotic vampires every night when I hunt them, and they sicken me.  So I much prefer immortals who can shape shift.  *peeks up at Zach*  One in particular.

Zach:  *winks*  Immortal shape-shifters, for the same reason.  Though I admit I admire Bastien’s young vampire friend, Cliff.  He’s an honorable man and has managed to keep the madness that strikes all vampires at bay far longer than most.

Lisette:  *nods*  I like Cliff.  I hope Melanie and the network will be able to help him.

Sheldon:  If anyone can help him, Melanie can.  What about . . . humans or immortals?

Zach:  If you’re asking who is more annoying, I’ll choose immortals.

Lisette:  *elbows him*  That’s just because you’ve so little contact with humans.

Zach:  I doubt humans would chap my ass the way your Immortal Guardian brethren do.  They’ve certainly never declared me a traitor.

Sheldon:  What about you, Lisette?  Do you like one group over the other?

Lisette:  No.  My fellow immortals and the humans who aid us are all like family.  I don’t know what I would do without Tracy.  She’s like a sister to me, and she’s human.

Sheldon:  She totally kicks ass, too.

Lisette:  *laughs*  Yes, she does.

Sheldon:  *consults list of questions*  Okay, I really don’t want to know this, but apparently all the ladies do . . .  Boxers or briefs?

Zach:  You want to know what kind of underwear I wear?

Lisette:  When you DO wear it.

Sheldon:  That’s . . . too much information.

Zach:  *shrugs*  Boxers.  I was born thousands of years ago.  Men didn’t wear tight, binding undergarments then, so why the hell would I want to do so now?

Lisette:  Especially when you look so hot in boxers.

Sheldon:  Gag.  Day or night?

Zach:  Both.

Lisette:  Night.  I’m a younger immortal and can’t withstand direct sunlight without suffering the consequences.  Zach, on the other hand, is lucky.  He’s like Seth and is so old that sunlight doesn’t affect him adversely.

Zach:  *frowns at Sheldon*  Were you asking what time of day we prefer?  I thought you were asking when we prefer to make love.

Sheldon:  Why would you think that?

Zach:  *shrugs*  You asked about my underwear.

Sheldon:  Dude, no one wants to know about your sex life.  *consults list again*  Crap.  I spoke too soon.  Top or bottom?

Zach:  Both.

Lisette:  Both.

Zach:  *takes Lisette’s hand as his eyes acquire a golden glow and hers begin to glow a vibrant amber*

Sheldon:  Great.  Now your eyes are glowing.  Don’t pounce on each other yet.  I still have a few questions I’m supposed to ask.  Spaghetti or steak?

Lisette:  Spaghetti.

Zach:  *smiles*  She’s a carbohydrate fiend.

Lisette:  It’s true.

Zach:  She’s also ALWAYS hungry.

Lisette:  *winks*  And not just for pasta.

Sheldon:  Come on, guys.  No flirting.  *checks list and sighs*  This is so not going to help.  Bed or sofa?

Zach:  Is THIS one a lovemaking question?

Sheldon:  *resigned expression*  Yes.

Zach:  Bed.  Her sofa is way too short.

Lisette:  *laughs*  I’ll have to get a larger one.

Sheldon:  Change of subject.  Petite or tall?

Zach:  Petite.

Lisette:  I’m 5’6”.  I don’t think that’s considered petite.

Zach:  And I’m more than a foot taller than you.  You’re petite.

Sheldon:  Who ISN’T, compared to you?  Daggers or swords?

Zach:  Daggers suffice.

Lisette:  Says the immortal who can kill a man with a thought and doesn’t need ANY weapons.  I favor shoto swords myself.

Zach:  And you’re exceedingly skillful at wielding them.

Sheldon:  Strong women are so hot.

Zach:  Not to you, she isn’t.

Sheldon:  Dude, I totally just flashed back to interviewing Étienne.  Next question . . .  Which speaks louder to you—actions or words?

Lisette:  Actions.

Zach:  I agree.

Sheldon:  I agree, too.  Which brings me to my last question.  *eyes Zach*  Friend or foe?

Lisette:  Sheldon!  I told you, he’s on our side!

Sheldon:  I know.  But I’d like to hear it from him.  Zach?

Zach:  I believe the—

Lisette:  If you say the jury is still out on that, I will beat you.

Zach:  *eyes flash golden*  With what?

Sheldon:  Aaaaand that’s my cue.  See you guys later.

New York Times and USA Today Best Selling Author, Dianne Duvall, returns with the much-anticipated 5th book in her paranormal romance Immortal Guardians series, NIGHT UNBOUND!

Title: Night Unbound

Series: Immortal Guardians #5

Author: Dianne Duvall

Format: eBook/Mass Market Paperback, 432 pages

Publication: September 2nd 2014 by Zebra

ISBN: 1420129805

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Praise for the Immortal Guardians series:
“Duvall is a major player.” –RT Book Reviews
“The Immortal Guardians series is one you’ll want to follow.” –The Romance Review
“These dark, kick-ass guardians can protect me any day!” –Alexandra Ivy on Darkness Dawns
“Whizzing along at light speed. . .this sophomore effort sizzles.” –Publishers Weekly on Night Reigns

Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians protect humanity from unspeakable horrors–but their hearts are as fragile as any mortal’s. . .

For centuries, Lisette d’Alençon has been a warrior against the dark. She fights alongside her brothers and comrades. But when the dreams start coming, she can’t bear to confess them to the Immortal Guardians’ command. Dreams of a dark-haired man with soft eyes and brutal wounds, a man her heart aches for–and a man she knows has been declared a traitor.

Zach is an exile, a loner. He won’t defend himself against false accusations or grovel to those who should have faith in him. But he’ll damn sure defend the woman who kept him sane against a plague of super-vamps that seems to have appeared from nowhere. The Guardians will blame him, and that will make Lisette suspect, too. With life, death and eternity on the line, who can they really trust?

Kelly’s review of  Night Unbound:

NUMBER OF HEARTS:  4 3/4

It feels like I have been away from the Immortal Guardian world for way too long.  When Ms. Duvall announced that Night Unbound was going to be Zach’s book I was over the moon.  I just love this Immortal with wings!!  And that Lisette was going to be his lady love.  Super excited.

Night Unbound did not disappoint me.  Zach & Lisette are so perfect for each other.  I love that Zach is always wanting to try something 🙂  (you will have to read to understand).   I am so glad that Zach got his own book.  He really need to be excepted and find love after so many years of nothing.

There were so many heartbreaking tissue grabbing and happy joyful scenes in this book.  Just a few that stood out were:

1) The scene with Cliff were heartbreaking I hope that they find a way to help him.

2) The scene with Amy: Oh gosh, poor Amy.  Poor Marcus.  Many tears

3) The scene with Aidan broke my heart.

4) Every scene with Zach & Lisette

I just loved this book. And as always I had the wonderful Kristin Potter read to me yet again.  I just love how she is able to bring the characters to life for me.  Kristin is so very talented at voices that it is really easy to tell who is who even before she reads who is speaking.  I am very much looking forward to the next installment of the Immortal Guardian series.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley & Tantor Media in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

Yasmine Galenorn’s Flight From Hell Release Day Blast

FFHBlastBanner1

“Yasmine Galenorn creates a world I never want to leave” – Sherrilyn Kenyon

Yasmine Galenorn’s Otherworld series is long running, best selling, and has unique, well developed world building. This rich environment has more than one story to tell… and it’s time for a new one to begin.

FLIGHT FROM HELL IS OUT TODAY!!!

FLIGHT FROM HELL is the novella bridge-piece that loosely links Yasmine’s existing Otherworld series with her upcoming Fly By Night series. To help celebrate the release of the novella, Yasmine has a contest happening on her site, and today is the LAST DAY to enter!!! Click HERE for prize details and instructions for entering.

When Carter, half demon, comes to Menolly and her sisters, asking for their help, they think he’s just had a tiff with Shimmer, his blue dragon girlfriend.

But after talking to Alex Radcliffe, the owner of the Fly By Night Magical Investigations Agency where Shimmer works, they suspect that she has been kidnapped by an old enemy of Alex’s.

Now, Alex joins forces with the D’Artigo sisters in a desperate race to find Shimmer before Julian, a powerful vampire from Alex’s past with a grudge to settle, can use the dragon to wreak havoc on Seattle as revenge.

Next summer, in the Fly By Night series, we’ll meet new characters and have new adventures, but each book will have Yasmine’s signature depth and edge. Answering questions about the similarities and differences between the two series, Yasmine recently posted this on her blog:

  1. They ARE both set in the same universe/same city/same time.
  2. The Fly By Night Series is NOT just another venue for the D’Artigo Sisters. The focus will be on Alex and Shimmer—there will be crossover of minor characters, but the two series are definitely their own and Fly By Night belongs to Alex and Shimmer.
  3. The Fly By Night Series will be from Shimmer’s viewpoint, and she and Alex hang out in vastly different circles than the D’Artigo sisters overall.
  4. FLIGHT FROM HELL is an OTHERWORLD novella that introduces Alex and Shimmer to you—here, the characters do interact but the Fly By Night Series will be focused on the Fly By Night world.
  5. Fly By Night is more of a mystery/thriller series. I’ll give you these spoilers:
  • Alex and Shimmer are not privy to the demonic war going on.
  • The FBN books will be more standalone. While the characters will evolve, there’s not all that much of an overwhelming series arc.
  • The FBN gang is a little more humorous, though the series is not really ‘lighter’ than Otherworld.

You can read the rest of this post on Yasmine’s blog HERE.

Click on the FLIGHT FROM HELL cover above to see its info page on Yasmine’s site (with excerpt and playlist). And each of the covers below will take you to their individual pages. Now is a perfect time to get to know the Otherworld series, or catch up where you left off!!

Extreme Measures

(Aegis Security #1)

Being prepared for any scenario is the trademark of any good CIA operative, and Eve Wolfe is one of the best. But when her latest mission literally explodes in her face, she wakes up labeled a traitor and—even more surprising—in the custody of elite Aegis Security operative and ex-lover Zane Archer. Although she still secretly has feelings for Zane, he’s now demanding the one thing that she can’t give him: the truth.
When he caught her breaking the rules years ago, Zane let Eve walk away without an explanation. Now someone has not only sabotaged Aegis but also turned an American city into a war zone, and all signs point to Eve. Zane needs answers that can come only from Eve’s still-tempting lips, and he finally has the elusive operative right where he wants her—at his mercy.

Excerpt:
“I need to look at your shoulder again before you lay down,” she said
at his back.
He didn’t answer, just found the closest bedroom and pulled her
inside. Closing the door with his boot, he tugged off his jacket and tossed it
on a chair to his right, then did the same with his T-shirt and pulled her
toward the bed.
“Impatient, aren’t you?” she mumbled. He set the bag of supplies
they’d picked up on the bed beside him while she shrugged out of her
sweatshirt, dropped it on the ground, then began gently peeling away his
bandages.
Zane closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath. “I’m a man,
darlin’.  We’re always impatient.”
“I remember. This actually looks pretty good. I’m just going to change
the dressing.”
He didn’t want to think about what she remembered. He had enough
memories pinging around in his brains for both of them—and most were the
X-rated variety. He sat still while she removed the soaked bandages, added
antibiotic ointment and covered the wound again. But his stomach clenched every
time her soft fingers grazed his skin, and with every breath he drew, a whiff
of that sweet peach scent bombarded him, amping his awareness and sending blood
straight to his groin.
“There,” she said, placing the last piece of tape over the wound. “Now
you just need to take these before you pass out and you should be good.” She
handed him two pills from the bottle they’d picked up at the pet store and
stepped away.
He snagged her by the wrist. “Where do you think you’re going?”
“To get you a glass of water.”
“No water.” He popped the pills in his mouth and dry swallowed them.
There was just enough light coming through the window to see her exasperated
expression. “Wow. What a stud you are.”
He ignored the sarcasm and patted the mattress beside him. “Get
comfortable, sweetheart.”
She sighed. “Look, Archer. I—”
He jerked her toward him. A yelp slipped from her lips just before she
fell into his body. Heat immediately enveloped him, but he quickly flipped her
to her back, then climbed over her.
“Archer—”
Her warning was laced with just a touch of fear. Just enough to tell
him he’d surprised her. And considering nothing seemed to surprise this woman,
he was using that to his advantage.
He grasped both of her arms at the wrists and pinned them above her
head. Pain ricocheted from his shoulder down his arm and back up again, but he
ignored it. Just like he tried to ignore her trim hips locked between his knees
and the way the light from the window spilled over her breasts and bare abdomen
in that revealing top. “Here’s how this is going to work, sweetheart. I’m going
to close my eyes for a few hours and you’re going to stay right here beside me
where I know you can’t get into any trouble. Then, when I wake, I’ll call
Carter and we can both be rid of each other for good.”
She pursed her lips and lifted her chin, a clear challenge glinting in
her eyes. “I’d like to be rid of you right now.”
“Too bad. You’re stuck with me.” He lowered his weight onto hers, let
go of one arm and cinched the zip tie hidden in his hand around her wrist.
“Archer… What the hell?”
Zane looped the second zip tie through hers, tightened it around his
own wrist, then rolled off her onto his back and drew in a deep breath.
“Oh, my God.” She sat upright. “You did not just do that. Where the fuck did you get more zip ties?”
He yanked on her arm until his lowered back to the bed. “I stole them.
You’re not the only one who can filch goods unnoticed, beautiful.” He relaxed
back into the pillows and closed his eyes. “Now lie down.”
“You are so gonna pay for this.”
He didn’t need to see the smoke pumping from her ears to know it was
there. He could hear it in her voice and feel it in the heat radiating from her
skin. A wry smile curled his lips. “I figure I’m already doing time in
purgatory, thanks to you. A few more years won’t kill me.”
“And to think,” Eve snapped as she flopped back onto the bed, “I was
actually worried about you.”
Zane’s humor faded. “We both know you weren’t worried. You were just
biding your time until you could run. I’m not a stupid southern hick,
sweetheart. Now shut up so I can get some sleep.”
“Don’t mind me,” she muttered, crossing her arms over her chest and
dragging his hand with her. “I’ll just be sitting here plotting all the ways I
can murder you in your sleep.”
He chuckled. Now that was the feisty brunette he remembered. “Just do
it quietly. I’m beat.”
She let out a long, frustrated sigh, but the sound didn’t irritate
Zane like it should, instead it relaxed him. And man, either he was seriously
losing it or all those drugs had finally fried his gray matter. Because lying
next to his archenemy, feeling her heat and smelling her soft, arousing scent, he
suddenly wasn’t focused on revenge. Losing himself in all her softness sounded
a hell of a lot better. And more fun. And, holy hell, way more fucking erotic.
He just wasn’t sure what to do about it.

HER PERFECT MATE (X-OPS Book One)

Paige Tyler

Thank you so much for having me at Books-n-Kisses!  I thought I’d introduce readers to the world of my new X-OPS Series with an inside look at a conversation between the hero, Special Forces Captain Landon Donovan and the resident psychologist at the Department of Covert Operations during a mandatory counseling session all agents must attend after completing their first mission with a new partner. While this scene isn’t in HER PERFECT MATE, I imagine it would have gone something like this.

Landon was a little nervous. He and Ivy had just gotten back from South America and he’d been called in for a mandatory counseling session with the DCO’s head shrink, Marlon Anders. After what happened between him and his new partner down in the jungles of Venezuela, Landon wasn’t too eager to let anyone go sniffing around in his head. But what choice did he have? These stress-reduction sessions were apparently part of the job description at the Department of Covert Ops. If he didn’t do it, he’d just draw that much more attention.

The door to Marlon’s office was open, and the short, curly-haired man motioned him in the second Landon poked in his head.

“Agent Donovan, come in and close the door.” He got to his feet and came around the desk. “I’m glad you were able make it. I know how busy you are right now.”

Busy didn’t even begin to cover it. He and Ivy had just gotten back to the States last night and had at a full day of training ahead of them starting in an hour.

“Have a seat.” Marlon gestured to the couch against the wall. “I’ll get you out of here as fast as I can.” He smiled as he made himself comfortable in an adjacent chair. “Remember, these are confidential sessions—you can tell me anything and it will stay just between the two of us.”

Sure it will. Landon had a sneaking suspicion whatever he said was going to end up in the written report Marlon gave to the director of the DCO. He eyed the sofa. Brown leather, it looked comfortable enough, but he didn’t sit. Marlon smiled at him in that unamused doctor kind of way and gestured to the couch again.

Landon sat, but promised himself he would not—under any circumstances—lie down.

“I understand things got pretty intense down there in South America,” Marlon said. “Tell me about that.”

Landon almost groaned as he remembered the sensation of Ivy’s mouth on his, her body under his hands. But he doubted that was the kind of intense that Marlon was talking about…at least he hoped that wasn’t where the shrink was heading with this.

He propped his ankle on his opposite knee, hoping it would hide the hard-on pitching a tent in his pants. “It wasn’t any more intense than I’m used to. We did the mission, got shot at, shot back, then got the hell out of there.” He shrugged. “Stuff like that was an everyday occurrence back in Special Forces.”

Marlon wrote something down on a pad, then eyed him over the tops of his reading glasses. “Then you and Agent Halliwell got along well? You didn’t find it too hard working with a female EVA?”

While Landon found himself shaking his head and giving a pat answer about how well he and Ivy had worked together—which was true—he couldn’t forget that little nap they’d taken in their tiny makeshift tent. His erection stiffened even more at that and he shifted on the couch.

“And that fact that she’s an EVA,” Marlon continued. “That doesn’t bother you at all?”

Landon hated that acronym—Extremely Valuable Asset. Who the hell came up with that anyway? “No. I have no problem working with a shifter.”

He’d never considered himself much of a cat person, but that was before he met Ivy. With her exotic beauty and long silky hair, she was the epitome of grace—even when she was out there kicking ass.

Marlon took off his glasses and dangled them between his fingers, his gray eyes piercing. “You know Agent Halliwell had problems getting along with her previous partners, right?”

Landon nodded. “She told me.”

“But the two of you have no problems working with each other at all?”

“None,” Landon said.

“I see. And why do you think that is?”

Landon grinned. “I guess we just have better chemistry.”

That was an understatement. Hell, they were jonesing for each other so badly they were practically going nuts. The only thing that had kept them from taking things too far when they were in Venezuela was knowing they were too good together as a team to risk getting split up. Which was what would happen if their boss found out.

Marlon jotted something else down in his notebook, then smiled. “I’m glad to hear that. I was a little concerned that they purposely sent you two on a mission so soon just to see you fail. Nice to see you proved them wrong. I think you two have the makings of a special team.”

Landon couldn’t agree more.
