Kelly reviews Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

TITLE: Mexican Gothic
CHARACTERS: Noemi Taboada
AUTHOR: Silvia Moreno-Garcia
NARRATOR: Frankie Corzo
RUN TIME: 10 Hours & 39 Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: June 30, 2020
ORDER LINKS: Audible |Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
An isolated mansion. A chillingly charismatic aristocrat. And a brave socialite drawn to expose their treacherous secrets. . . .
From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes a novel set in glamorous 1950s Mexico.
After receiving a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find – her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.
Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.
Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.
And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

REVIEW:
WOW!!! What an amazing story! Not at all what I was expecting at all.
I will say that the beginning of this book was a little slow to build. But once the world was built things started getting serious quickly. I truly enjoyed the twists and turns of this story. The secrets that are being held at High House are epic. I would have never figured out what was actually going on until Silvia revealed it to me.
I truly enjoyed Noemí’s journey.

This was my first book from author Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I really enjoyed her world building and storytelling. I will be adding her to my list of authors to watch for the next book.
I did listen to this book on audio and this was also my first book narrated by Frankie Corzo. Frankie did a great job of bringing these characters and story to life.

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Beth, Portia, and Eddie Morgan haven’t all been together in years. And for very good reasons—we’ll get to those later. But when their wealthy grandfather dies and leaves a cryptic final message in his wake, the siblings and their respective partners must come together for a cross-country road trip to fulfill his final wish and—more importantly—secure their inheritance.
But time with your family can be tough. It is for everyone.
It’s even harder when you’re all keeping secrets and trying to forget a memory—a missing person, an act of revenge, the man in the black truck who won’t stop following your car—and especially when at least one of you is a killer and there’s a body in the trunk. Just to name a few reasons.
But money is a powerful motivator. It is for everyone.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts He Started It is a wild ride of three siblings fulfilling their late grandfather’s final wish to revisit the family road trip that they went on 20 years earlier. What lays ahead for the Morgan siblings is a lot of memories, questions, lies and betrayals.

*Staring at the final sentence in the book wondering what the heck just happened*
I think it took me a whole 5 minutes to realize that the story was over. Wow, just wow!!!
Family road trips will never be the same after reading He Started it. This was a great follow up novel by Samantha Downing. I really enjoyed My Lovely Wife and was excited to pick up He Started It for review.
The story has a few slow parts but I could not put the book down because I had no clue what was going to be next. And boy was I surprised multiple times.

I am already looking forward to whatever Samantha has in store for us next!!!

Kelly reviews A Touch Of Stone And Snow by Milla Vane

TITLE: A Touch of Stone and Snow
SERIES #: A Gathering of Dragons #2
CHARACTERS: Aerax & Lizzan
AUTHOR: Milla Vane
PUBLICATION DATE: July 7, 2020
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Milla Vane returns to a world of kings, magic, and passion in her exhilarating A Gathering of Dragons series, as a great alliance forms to stand against an evil warlord intent on their destruction.
Danger lurks in the western realms. The Destroyer’s imminent return has sent the realms into turmoil as desperate citizens seek refuge—but there’s no safety to be found when demons and wraiths crawl out from the shadows. Even Koth, a northern island kingdom left untouched by the Destroyer a generation past, is besieged by terrors spawned from corrupt magics.
When Lizzan leads the Kothan army against these terrors, only to see her soldiers massacred and to emerge as the only survivor, she is called a coward and a deserter. Shunned from her home, Lizzan now wanders in solitude as a mercenary for hire, until she encounters a group of warriors seeking new alliances with the northern kingdoms—a group that includes Aerax, the bastard prince of Koth, and the man who sent her into exile.
Though they were childhood friends, Aerax cannot allow himself to be close to the only woman who might thwart his treacherous plan to save their island realm. But when a goddess’s demand binds them together, Lizzan and Aerax must find a way to overcome their painful pasts. Or there will be no future for the western realms…

REVIEW:
Another exciting installment in Milla Vane’s A Gathering of Dragon’s series. In A Touch of Stone and Snow we are introduced to a new set of characters. There are a couple of familiar names from A Heart of Blood and Ashes that we do get to see. But in this story we follow Aerax & Lizzan both who are from Koth but have been separated for a number of years.
Aerax & Lizzan both have a very tangled history that will come full circle in this story. We also will learn a lot more about the world past, present and future.
I would highly recommend reading this series in order that you can better follow the story arc of what is happening in this world.
I am extremely excited for the third installment in this series!!!

Kelly reviews Nightingale House by Steve Frech

TITLE: Nightingale House

AUTHOR: Steve Frech
PUBLICATION DATE: June 19, 2020
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The Nightingale House is a new beginning for widower Daniel Price and his young daughter Caitlyn. After months of grief, this will be the place where they start their life as a family of two. But something is wrong—Daniel can’t settle. There’s an odd, cold feeling in the master bedroom, and a mysterious dripping noise that seems to move from room to room. Whispers of I can’t sleep echo through the corridors, long into the night. And then Daniel uncovers the chilling story of the family who lived in the house years before, of betrayal, tragedy, and murder. Could the Nightingale House be not the home Daniel dreamed of for his daughter—but a place that will bring their worst nightmares to life?

REVIEW:
One House
Two Families
And a deep dark secret that could destroy them all.

Nightingale House tells us the story of the house from the present and the past. We get to follow Daniel Price and his daughter Caitlyn in the present. A young family trying to learn to live with the loss of Nicole, Daniel’s wife and Caitlyn’s mother. We also follow the Carrington Family who lived in the house back in 1900.

This was my first book by Steve Frech. I enjoyed the book but it was a little predictable for me. But all in all it was a good book and I enjoyed the journey of the story. If you like a good haunting story you will enjoy this book.

Kelly reviews Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson

TITLE: Real Men Knit
CHARACTERS: Jesse Stong & Kerry Fuller
AUTHOR: Kwana Jackson (K.M. Jackson)
PUBLICATION DATE: May 19, 2020
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
When their foster-turned-adoptive mother suddenly dies, four brothers struggle to keep open the doors of her beloved Harlem knitting shop, while dealing with life and love in Harlem.
Jesse Strong is known for two things: his devotion to his adoptive mom, Mama Joy, and his reputation for breaking hearts in Harlem. When Mama Joy unexpectedly passes away, he and his brothers have different plans on what to do with Strong Knits, their neighborhood knitting store: Jesse wants to keep the store open; his brothers want to shut it down.
Jesse makes an impassioned plea to Kerry Fuller, his childhood friend who has had a crush on him her entire life, to help him figure out how to run the business. Kerry agrees to help him reinvent the store and show him the knitty-gritty of the business, but the more time they spend together, the more the chemistry builds. Kerry, knowing Jesse’s history, doesn’t believe this relationship will exist longer than one can knit one, purl one. But Jesse is determined to prove to her that he can be the man for her—after all, real men knit.

REVIEW:
We get to follow the Strong brothers after the loss of their beloved Mother. They are left to pick up the pieces and try to decide what to do with the knit shop Knit Strong. While none of them know how to run a business they thankfully have Kerry Fuller. Kerry has been a part of the Knit Strong family from the get go and is as much family as the 4 brothers are. Between the five of them they just might be able to save the shop and the only real home the boys ever had.

But only if Jesse doesn’t screw it up.

This is the first story by Kwana Jackson (she has other books listed under K.M. Jackson) and I love it. I love the characters that she created and the world that revolves around a small local Knitting store. As an avid crocheter (and can knit a washcloth) I loved the setting of this story.
The tension between Kerry and the boys was great. But Kerry and Jesse took it over the top and was a great slow burn.

I do hope that we will get to see the Strong brothers again soon.

Kelly reviews A Bad Day For Sunshine by Darynda Jones

TITLE: A Bad Day For Sunshine
SERIES #: Sunshine Vicram #1
CHARACTERS: Sunshine & Aurora Vicram
AUTHOR: Darynda Jones
NARRATOR: Lorelei King
RUN TIME: 11 Hours & 40 Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: April 7, 2020
ORDER LINKS: Audible | Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the center of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.
Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, its strong cups of coffee—and a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff–an election her adorably meddlesome parents entered her in–and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of it’s reminding Sunny why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that trouble at her daughter’s new school and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and Sunshine has her hands full.
Enter sexy almost-old-flame Levi Ravinder and a hunky US Marshall, both eleven on a scale of one to blazing inferno, and the normally savvy sheriff is quickly in over her head. Now it’s up to Sunshine to juggle a few good hunky men, a not-so-nice kidnapping miscreant, and Doug the ever-pesky flasher. And they said coming home would be drama-free.

REVIEW:
4.5 Hearts A great start to a new series!! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to A Bad Day for Sunshine. Darynda Jones is an excellent storyteller. I love the chase of characters she has created in this new Del Sol world. There are many many characters that I loved and quite a few that I really wanted to tar and feather.

I loved the relationship between Sunshine and Auri. They are everything that a mother and daughter relationship should be. I loved that Darynda told the story from both Sunshine and Auri’s point of view. It was great to see how much they love and support each other.

The rest of the characters are so great! I really hope that we do get to explore more of a lot of the secondary characters throughout the Sunshine Vicram series. Or possible spin off stories about the characters.

Oh one more thing: Levi Ravinder….. YUM! And please don’t turn out to be a dirtbag.

Either way I am hooked on the Sunshine Vicram world.

I was a bit worried to listen to this story because I feared that I would hear Charley as Lorelei King was reading. But I should have known the brilliant voice of Lorelei would never let that happen. From the get go Sunshine sounded nothing like Charley and it made listening to this story amazing. Lorelei is so talented with her voices, Sunshine, Auri, Quincy and Levi…sigh… she is a great narrator. If you are a fan of her narrating the Charley Davidson series never fear. While there may be a few side characters that may sound similar the main characters are all new.

I am ready for book 2, A Good Day for Chardonnay (2021). I can’t wait to see where Darynda takes us on this journey.

Though Koesha’s crew is seeking a path around the globe, Koesha is also looking for her sister, lost at sea two years ago. But what lies beyond the edges of the map is far more dangerous than storms and sea monsters. . . .
In this sequel to A Plague of Giants, these characters and more will become the voices of a new generation bringing hope and revolution to a war-torn world.

REVIEW:
A Blight of Blackwings picks up right where we left off at the end of A Plague of Giants. By continuing our journey with the people of the world as they navigate new people, new worlds, new Kennings, and new threats.
Another wonderful book from Kevin Hearne. I really am enjoying this new world that he has created. There are so many characters to root for. There are so many villains to hate. There are so many unanswered questions. I am very much looking forward to the final book in this trilogy A Curse of Krakens.

Luke Daniels & Xe Sands again lend their amazing voices to this series. Most of this book is narrated by Luke as the Baird who is telling the story is male. Xe picks up on the parts of the story told by the female characters. It is a very interesting way to do an audio book and it works.

This is most definitely a story that needs to be read in order. There is so much that happens in A Plague of Giants I am not sure you would know what is happening or way if you just picked up A Blight of Blackwings. So go get book one read it then read book 2

Kelly reviews Flowers On Her Grave by Jennifer Chase

TITLE: Flowers on Her Grave
SERIES #: Detective Katie Scott#3
CHARACTERS: Katie Scott
AUTHOR: Jennifer Chase
PUBLICATION DATE: March 24, 2020
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
On the floor, amongst the piles of freshly pressed laundry, lay the woman’s lifeless body, her pale yellow nightdress soaked in blood. “I didn’t do it…” came a whisper from the corner of the room.
Detective Katie Scott has never seen two people more in love than her aunt and uncle as they danced together on the night of their wedding anniversary party. But the next morning, when Katie finds her aunt’s body sprawled across the floor, that perfect image is shattered forever.
All fingers point to Katie’s uncle, Pine Valley’s beloved sheriff and protector – after all, his prints are all over the antique knife found at the scene. Grieving, but certain of her uncle’s innocence, Katie is consigned to the cold case division after she’s discovered searching the house for clues.
Does someone want to keep her as far away from this investigation as possible?
Ignoring warnings from her team, Katie digs into her uncle’s old case files and discovers photographs of the body of a young girl found tied to a tree after a hike in search of a rare flower. Her body is covered with the same unusual lacerations her aunt suffered. Katie knows it can’t be a coincidence, but every lead she follows takes her to a dead end.
Moments before the sheriff is arrested, Katie realizes that a single piece of thread she found at the crime scene could be the missing link that will stitch old crimes to new.
But how can she prove her uncle’s innocence without throwing herself directly into the line of fire? She doesn’t have a choice, he’s the only family she has left…

REVIEW:
3.5 Hearts Flowers on Her Grave is the third installment in Jennifer Chase’s Detective Katie Scott series. Once again we get to follow Katie while she solves yet another cold case but this one is different. This cold case is eerily similar to the murder of her beloved Aunt. Katie jumps at the chance to solve not one but possibly two murder cases. That is if she can keep her eye on the prize and not get murdered in the process.

I enjoyed this installment to the Detective Katie Scott series. While I was not surprised by the who ending up being the murderer the journey to find the said murder was a good one. I also enjoyed seeing Katie’s relationships with her friends and Uncle grow. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Kelly reviews A Plague Of Giants by Kevin Hearne

AUTHOR: Kevin Hearne
NARRATOR: Luke Daniels & Xe Sands
RUN TIME: 22 Hours & 14 Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: October 3, 2017
ORDER LINKS: Audible | Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
MOTHER AND WARRIOR
Tallynd is a soldier who has already survived her toughest battle: losing her husband. But now she finds herself on the front lines of an invasion of giants, intent on wiping out the entire kingdom, including Tallynd’s two sons—all that she has left. The stakes have never been higher. If Tallynd fails, her boys may never become men.
SCHOLAR AND SPY
Dervan is a historian who longs for a simple, quiet life. But he’s drawn into intrigue when he’s hired to record the tales of a mysterious bard who may be a spy or even an assassin for a rival kingdom. As the bard shares his fantastical stories, Dervan makes a shocking discovery: He may have a connection to the tales, one that will bring his own secrets to light.
REBEL AND HERO
Abhi’s family have always been hunters, but Abhi wants to choose a different life for himself. Embarking on a journey of self-discovery, Abhi soon learns that his destiny is far greater than he imagined: a powerful new magic thrust upon him may hold the key to defeating the giants once and for all—if it doesn’t destroy him first.
Set in a magical world of terror and wonder, this novel is a deeply felt epic of courage and war, in which the fates of these characters intertwine—and where ordinary people become heroes, and their lives become legends.

REVIEW:
A Plague of Giants is the first book in Kevin Hearne’s new Seven Kennings Trilogy. I chose to listen to this book on audio because Luke Daniels is one of the narrators. I have only listened to one other book narrated by Xe Sands but she is a very talented narrator too. And enjoyed the way that this audio book was set up. Luke was the man narrator as the story follows Dervan for most of the story. Xe came in and did all the parts that were the females telling their tales.
Which leads me into how Kevin wrote this story. The Seven Kennings trilogy is a set of stories inside a story that tell you of the world. In A Plague of Giants we follow a day by day telling of the events that are both before and during the invasion by the Giants. We follow multiple characters telling multiple story lines of these events. While in the beginning it is a little confusing the storylines do overlap and merge together then away. It is a very interesting way for a book to be written.
I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait for the next installment to see what happens.

Kelly reviews The Accidental Mermaid by Dakota Cassidy

TITLE: The Accidental Mermaid
SERIES #: Accidentals #16
CHARACTERS: Esther Sanchez & Tucker Pearson
AUTHOR: Dakota Cassidy
NARRATOR: Hollie Jackson
RUN TIME: 6 Hours & 6 Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: October 1, 2017
ORDER LINKS: Audible | Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Esther Williams Sanchez is busy living her life the way she’s always done. Spending time with her pets, working as a divorce mediator, and enjoying her newly renovated cottage on the beach.
She’s also decided it’s high time she learns how to swim to prepare for an upcoming cruise. It’s time to let go of a horrible past experience and take some lessons.
So at thirty-two, Esther enrolls in the only class at the Y with a spot left. A Mommy and Me class—which seems quite tame, considering her oldest classmate aside from her is three-years-old.
Learn to swim with a bunch of babies and toddlers? Easy-squeezy, right? Er, no. As Esther leaves the pool after her very first lesson, she sprouts a magnificent tail and fins. Oh, and hair the color of a rainbow. Lots and lots of luscious hair.
Lucky for her, the OOPS girls are on site, and as they set about finding out how this happened to Esther, they run into a hunky Australian merman named Tucker Pearson who happens to be the key to Esther’s problem. But Tucker has problems of his own, and they include being kicked out of his family’s bottled water company, booted from his pod, and accused of embezzling over a million bucks.
Oh, and killing someone… OOPS, here we go again!

REVIEW:
In The Accidental Mermaid Marty, Wanda and Nina have to help Ester navigate the new waters she has found herself in after being turned into a mermaid. Of course nothing can be simple in the OOPS world and chaos soon finds them.

Another exciting adventure with the ladies of OOPS. I love how these stories always bring out the best in every character (yes, even you Nina). I really enjoy who Dakota Cassidy brings the mystery and keeps me guessing throughout the story.
I can’t wait for the next Accidental installment.

Kelly reviews Marty’s Horrible, Terrible, Very Bad Day by Dakota Cassidy

TITLE: Marty’s Horrible, Terrible, Very Bad Day
SERIES #: Accidental #17
CHARACTERS: Roxanne McNally & Hudson Kahlil
AUTHOR: Dakota Cassidy
NARRATOR: Hollie Jackson
RUN TIME: Hours & Minutes
PUBLICATION DATE: February 28, 2019
ORDER LINKS: Audible | Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
For Roxanne McNally, being a grim reaper has never been easy. Now she hates her job more than usual, because she’s been charged with reaping the soul of a legend—werewolf Marty Andrews Flaherty. Marty, together with her equally iconic friends Nina and Wanda, are Rocky’s idols. To say she’s an OOPs fangirl is putting it mildly. No way is she willing to deal with eons of hate Tweets for taking the soul of a paranormal superstar. Reaping supernaturals isn’t even her gig. She’s strictly human-only. No. There must be some mistake with the list, and she’ll get to the bottom of it…if she can just ignore the distracting reappearance of a certain hunky doctor in her life.

Hudson Kahlil—frequently known as Dr. Sexypants among besotted patients and staff—could swear he knows Roxanne from somewhere. As a phoenix who’s regularly reincarnated with no previous knowledge of his past lives, he’s not surprised he can’t place her. Though he’d love to reacquaint himself…and he may get the chance, since they’re both temporarily staying at Marty Flaherty’s home, protecting her while racing to find an unknown threat.

Nina, Wanda and their assorted framily may be able to save Marty’s immortal soul from an enemy whose plan is still unclear…but they can’t save Rocky from the backlash when her secret past connection to Hudson is finally revealed

REVIEW:
What happens when a former human turned werewolf has a heart attack in the middle of her karaoke solo?
Nothing short of pandemonium for the people of OOPS!!
With Marty out of commission and Wanda 5 million months pregnant it is up to Nina to take the lead on this mystery. But every turn seems to bring them to the same conclusion something is afoot at the Circle K and no one can tell them why. Enter Roxanne who has vowed to protect Marty at all cost, the only problem is that her normal job is to take lives not save them.

This was a great quick read. I enjoyed watching how the OOPS clan was going to figure this one out. The addition of a Grim Reaper was really fun too. As always I enjoyed this story immensely and can’t wait for the next installment in this series.
