Interview & Giveaway with Elizabeth Chadwick

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome 1st time guest Elizabeth Chadwick to the blog

Susan Hicks (Elizabeth Chadwick) photographed by Charlie Hopkinson. © 2007Elizabeth, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I was born in the north of England in the county of Lancashire.  The family moved to Scotland when I was 3 years old and I lived there until I was 11, when we returned to England, to Nottinghamshire.  I now live with my husband and three fun-loving terriers in a lovely beamed cottage in the country.  On a clear day, we can just about see the turrets of Belvoir Castle (pronounced Beevor) from the landing window!

Have you always wanted to be an author?

From the age of 15, yes.  As a very small child I wanted to be a farmer, or marry one – neither of which happened, although my husband does grown all our own fruit and vegetables!   Serious careers I hadn’t thought about and then when I wrote my first novel as a teen, I realised that this was the job I wanted to do.  I worked in shops to earn money, but it was always a job and just a way of supporting myself until eventually I was published.

Who are some of your favorite writers?

Historically speaking they would be Sharon Penman, Dorothy Dunnett, C.J. Sansom and Diana Gabaldon.   I always enjoy Peter James for his modern police procedural novels.  I love Nora Roberts’ romantic suspense novels.  Charlaine Harris is a favourite.  Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman.  I tend to like books that take me somewhere different than my own doorstep.

Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

My inspirations and influences before I was published include Mary Stewart (I wanted to write as well as she did in The Crystal Cave – no chance!),  Roberta Gellis, Sharon Kay Penman and the late, great Dorothy Dunnett.  I loved their writing and just reading it taught me a lot.

How did you get into writing in this specific genre?  Have you ever thought about writing in a different genre?

I wasn’t interested in historical things as a child beyond a general interest that any curious person has.  That changed when I saw a TV programme called Desert Crusader.  It was a costume drama about a gorgeous knight having adventures in the Holy Land.  I fell for him and started writing what I guess was a fan fiction piece, but it gradually changed into a work of fiction of its own kind.  It ended up a full 500 page novel, and I realized that this was what I wanted to do for a living.  I had to research the Middle Ages because I didn’t know anything about them, and the more I researched the more interested I became, and the more I wanted to write stories set in that era.  And here I am! If I wrote in a different genre, it would probably be either fantasy or horror.

What are some of your writing rituals?

Before I begin writing I always pop into my Facebook page and update that for my readers; the same with Twitter.  I will usually have a mug of tea or coffee at my side and a tub of spearmint chewing gum.  I tend to write better in the evening and at night than first thing in the morning, so you’ll quite often find me at my desk after midnight.  It’s getting on that way now.  Other than that I don’t really have any rituals.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?9781402274626-PR

THE OUTLAW KNIGHT is the story of an English knight called Fulke FitzWarin, who lived on the Welsh borders in the 12th century, and who quarrelled with King John who declared him an outlaw with a price on his head.  It’s also the story of his turbulent marriage to Maud Walter, whom King John wanted to make his mistress (against her wishes).   Much of the story is true. Indeed, some historians think that the origins of the famous Robin Hood legends began with Fulke FitzWarin.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

THE OUTLAW KNIGHT grew out of my research.  I was looking up something in a book for an earlier work in progress when I came across a 13th century chronicle detailing Fulke’s life story.  It was so fascinating and exciting that I knew it would make a great subject for a future novel.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

THE SUMMER QUEEN has recently been published in the UK and will be coming to the USA next year – it’s the first part of a trilogy about Eleanor of Aquitaine. (Called Alienor in my novels because it’s the original medieval spelling).  I am currently writing the middle book in the trilogy, titled THE WINTER CROWN, and that too will be coming Stateside in due course.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

Since I don’t yet have my USA copies of THE OUTLAW KNIGHT, I’ll do it in the UK paperback version.  Page 218.

Fulke has just been warned that his lands have been given away to someone else  in the King’s court, and Fulke is preparing to go and have it out with the King.

What would you be if you were not an author?

I’ve always rather fancied being an archaeologist!

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’m very eager to read King’s Ransom by Sharon Kay Penman. I’m also looking forward to Knights of the Hawk, the new release from James Aitcheson.  I would have said Dead Man’s Time by Peter James, but I’ve just read and loved it!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you for inviting me onto your blog of course!  I would also like to add just in case anyone becomes confused, that THE OUTLAW KNIGHT appears in the UK as LORDS OF THE WHITE CASTLE.  The reason for the change of title is a cultural one.  I understand that The White Castle is a hamburger chain in the USA and my publisher felt that THE OUTLAW KNIGHT was a more appropriate title and fitted the bill perfectly.

He should have known better than to fight with the future King John. Ruthless and feared, John is not one to forget or forgive. But Fulke FitzWarin couldn’t help himself, and now the vindictive John has insured that Fulke will never become lord of the castle he loves. Instead of accepting his fate, Fulke rebels. He begins an affair with Maude Walter, the wealthy widow desired by John himself. Negotiating a maze of deceit, treachery, and shifting alliances, Fulke’s route to success is blocked at every turn. And when the turmoil of the Magna Carta rebellion combines with a shocking tragedy, everything Fulke has fought for is thrown into the path of destruction.

Interview with Cassie Alexander

shapeshifted

I have been a big fan of Cassie Alexander for a while because her books are great supernatural thrillers that are set in an environment that I know all too well.  Her new release, Shapeshifted, is out and is one of my favorite books at the moment.  I’m very glad that she took time out of her busy schedule to be with us here today.

1. Tell me about your new release Shapeshifted.

Shapeshifted is Edie Spence’s third adventure.  Edie’s a nurse for the supernatural community in her home town, on a secret floor at the county hospital.  At the end of Moonshifted she was shunned by the supernatural community, which she thought was a good thing–she’s human, and hanging out with vampires and werewolves wasn’t very safe for her.  But in hanging out with vampires and werewolves wasn’t very safe for her.  But in Shapeshifted she discovers that her mother’s ill. The only thing that can save her is vampire blood, and so Edie finds herself desperate to get back in with old “friends.”

2. Where did you come up with the idea for the series?

The idea for Nightshifted came to me in my first few months working as a new nurse on nightshift.  Work was terrifying,  I spent a lot of my time freaking out that I was going to kill someone on accident or piss of an important coworker or doctor.  Nightshifted was born out of my efforts to stay sane during the transition,  from panicked newbie to, well, whatever it is that I am now, five years in.

3. What kind of research did you have to do for this series?

Not much, really! All the hospital/medical stuff is kinda-sorta pulled from my own life (waves HIPPA invisibility wand, although it’s not like I’ve ever treated vampire servants anyhow…that I know of! ;)) and everything else flows from there.

4. Do you still work the night shift and how do you find time to write with such a busy schedule?

I do still work nights, but I’m only part-time, so it’s only three nights a week–there’s no way I could work full-time nights and write two books a year.  It’s hard though, there’s still a lot of juggling to make everything work out.

5. What are you working on now?

Right now I’m working on a proposal for books 6 & 7, and also unpacking, since I just moved 😉

6.  Which authors have inspired you?

Argh, all my books are in boxes right now, so I can’t cheat and look at a bookshelf! Early inspirations were Frank Herbert and Alfred Bester.  More recent ones are Seanan McGuire and Diana Rowland and Kat Richardson 😀

7. Any advice for aspiring writers?

Keep at it! Nightshifted was the tenth book that I’d written, it took a long time (longer than I’d have liked! ;)) to get good.  Try to find what works for you, writing-schedule-wise, and do what you can do but don’t beat yourself up – if you have a bad day, or a no word day, keep pressing on and don’t look back.

SERIES #: Edie Spence #3

CHARACTERS: Edie Spence

AUTHOR:  Cassie Alexander

PUBLICATION DATE:  06/04/13

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Nurse Edie Spence is once again called upon to save a life…and this time, it’s personal. Can her new community of zombies, vampires, and shapeshifters come to her rescue when she needs them most?

When Edie was fired from her paranormal nursing job at County Hospital, her whole world came crashing down.  Now she’s once again shaken to her core. Her mother is deathly ill and there’s only one thing that will save her: vampire’s blood. But with the paranormal community shunning Edie, where can she obtain it…without losing her own life in the process?

Edie hopes to procure it at her new job at the clinic across town, where the forces of evil loom large.  Vampire gang wars are rampant. Old underground enemies are rising to the surface. And Edie’s zombie ex-boyfriend has arrived at the scene–but is he the same man he used to be? And what should she make of the enigmatic doctor with whom she shares an unexpected connection?  She’ll have to figure it out soon, because all hell is about to break loose–literally–and time is running out…..

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Jennifer             NUMBER OF STARS: Four Stars

REVIEW: This is the third novel in the Edie Spence series and I liked how Edie was struggling to find her identity since she was no longer employed by the Shadows and was shunned by the paranormal community.  Edie finds that being “normal” wasn’t exactly what she was hoping for and takes a job at a health clinic in the seedy part of town.  With gang members threatening the clinic at every turn and her own desperate search for vampire’s blood to save her mother looking dismal, Edie doesn’t know where to go.  But Edie soon learns that being shunned doesn’t protect her from old enemies and her new position has put her in more danger than she bargained for.

After reading Moonshifted, I wasn’t sure what was next for Edie and I’m glad to see that she had decided to change a few things since we last saw her.  She has a brand new job and a new apartment that was far away from the paranormal community but instead of feeling safe, Edie was just feeling that her life was boring since leaving the hospital. She soon finds out that her mother is sick with cancer and Edie has no way to help since she isn’t working for the Shadows anymore.  I liked seeing this side of Edie where she was vulnerable with no one to really fall back on.  She seemed to grow more as a character in this one and I was very impressed.  The story was well-written with a dark sense of humor that is a great addition to the series.  I liked learning more about past characters that made a guest appearance in Shapeshifted and can’t wait to read more about Edie in the next book, Deadshifted.

Interview with Victoria Scott

Liberator - Victoria Scott smaller

I have been raving about The Collector to anyone who will listen and I recently got the opportunity to interview the fantastic author, Victoria Scott.  I finished The Liberator in about a day and I have to say I will always be a fan of the bad boys. 🙂

1. Tell me a little bit about your new release The Liberator.

THE LIBERATOR focuses on Dante’s journey as someone who now works for the good guys, and how hard that is for someone who believes they’re bone-deep bad.  It also introduces a new character that will force Dante to confront his past.

2. Was it difficult writing about Dante and Charlie or did their characters come easy for you?

Dante was much easier to write than Charlie, oddly enough.  Sometimes I’d lose Dante’s voice, but then I’d think of a guy I once knew and it would snap back.

3. Are you planning to write more in the series or just have these two books?

There will be one final book after THE LIBERATOR.

4. Which actors do you see playing your characters and has there been any talk from Hollywood about making this into a movie or series?

Oh, definitely Zac Efron for Dante and Emma Watson as Charlie.  No talk from Hollywood yet, but my agent is busy shopping it to studios.

5. What are you working on next?

Right now I’m working on my newest series, FIRE & FLOOD, coming out from Scholastic next February. It’s kind of Hunger Games (brutal competition) meets the Golden Compass (animal companions) set in today’s world.

FIRE & FLOOD Cover

6. What advice would you give aspiring writers?

I’d say to ask yourself four questions before you begin any book: 1) Am I passionate about the story? 2) Would the general public find it appealing? 3) Is it truly original? 4) Is there a ton of opportunity for conflict? I hadn’t asked myself these questions before beginning the Dante Walker series, but I did for Fire & Flood, and what a world of difference it made.

About the Author:

Bio-PicI’m a teen fiction writer with a die-hard affection for dark and humorous books. My work is represented by Sara Crowe of Harvey Klinger literary agency. I have a master’s degree in marketing, and currently live in Dallas with my husband, Ryan.

My first series started with THE COLLECTOR, and was published by Entangled Teen in April 2013. The second book in the trilogy, THE LIBERATOR, will release August 2013. My next series kicks off with FIRE & FLOOD and is being published by Scholastic, February 2014.

Jennifer’s Review of The Liberator

Liberator - Victoria Scott smallerTITLE: The Liberator

SERIES #: Dante Walker #2

CHARACTERS: Dante Walker, Charlie Cooper

AUTHOR: Victoria Scott

PUBLICATION DATE:  08/27/13

ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Dante has a shiny new cuff wrapped around his ankle, and he doesn’t like that mess one bit. His new accessory comes straight from Big Guy himself and marks the former demon as a liberator. Despite his gritty past and bad boy ways, Dante Walker has been granted a second chance.

When Dante is given his first mission as a liberator to save the soul of seventeen-year-old Aspen, he knows he’s got this.  But Aspen reminds him of the rebellious life he used to live and is making it difficult to resist sinful temptations.  Though Dante is committed to living clean for his girlfriend Charlie, this dude’s been a playboy for far too long…and old demons die hard.

With Charlie becoming the girl she was never able to be pre-makeover and Aspen showing him how delicious it feels to embrace his inner beast, Dante will have to go somewhere he never thought he’d return to in order to accomplish the impossible: save the girl he’s been assigned to, and keep the girl he loves.

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Jennifer             NUMBER OF STARS: Five Stars

REVIEW: I absolutely loved The Collector and I was thrilled to learn that I didn’t have to wait a year before The Liberator was released.  In this book, Dante is now working for the good guys and has a new assignment to liberate a young girl’s soul while trying to protect Charlie from the clutches of the evil collectors. He quickly finds that his new assignment is more difficult than he imagined because Aspen reminds him so much of himself and he becomes tempted to fall back into his old bad habits.  On top of this, Dante learns that being a liberator holds its share of secrets and one of these secrets may put Charlie directly into harm’s way.

I love Dante because he is such a bad boy that has a heart of gold, especially when it comes to the adorable Charlie Cooper.  He made a deal to save Charlie’s life in The Collector and he is now coming to terms with those actions.  I was happy to see Dante start to grow emotionally because of his past decisions but it isn’t an easy road that he has to follow.  His new assignment challenges him to go back to his old ways and he doesn’t want to disappoint Charlie or ruin his new gig.  I liked seeing that internal moral struggle with Dante because it showed that everything wasn’t going to be easy for him even though he had changed and his love for Charlie helped him to do the right thing.

Charlie is still the sweet, lovable girl that wants to change the world and you can see why Dante has fallen head over heels for her.  My other favorite character is Aspen, the kick-ass, no-holds barred assignment that puts Dante’s world into a little bit of tailspin.  She doesn’t care about anything and just seems to live for the moment until she meets Dante.  Together, they are able to learn how to put their past mistakes behind them and I just liked their interaction with one another.

Victoria has created another wonderful installment in this series that is filled with non-stop action and great character-building that will keep you guessing. I loved The Liberator and I am looking forward to reading more about Dante and Charlie in the next book.

Interview with Elise Sax

MATCHPOINT Tour Button

elise-funny-225Welcome to Books-n-Kisses Elise, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I’m a harried, single mother, living in Southern California with my two sons, and I also write funny, sexy books with a side of murder.

Connect with Elise: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Goodreads

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Yes, except when I wanted to be an ice skating, ballet-dancing, veterinarian.

Are you a plotter or a punster or combo of both? And you explain the difference?

I write a general outline. I always know the ending (although MATCHPOINT’s ending surprised the hell out of me and will probably surprise the hell out of YOU.)—who did it and why. Then, I plough ahead. There’s a lot of organic magic that happens while writing a book.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I wrote MATCHPOINT entirely while lying in bed and watching TV. That’s pretty quirky.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?matchpoint cover

MATCHPOINT is the second book in the Matchmaker series. In it, Gladie Burger is still a matchmaker in training. While matching someone, she becomes the murder suspect in the death of the local dentist. Meanwhile, two hotties are after her, but there isn’t a lot of time for love when she’s being chased by a maniacal killer.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

I have no idea. Probably while I was deep conditioning my hair. Showers are really good for creativity. So are carbs.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

The first book in a young adult trilogy, which will make you cry (in a good way)

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I met Diana Gabaldon and almost swallowed my tongue. I would love to meet Nora Roberts because I always mention her, as in “what would Nora Roberts do?” She’s amazing, if only for her work ethic, alone.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Write. Finish. Just do it. And then do it, again. And don’t listen to anyone.

An Affair to Dismember coverCan you share with us something off your bucket list.

A luxury bungalow on the water in Bora Bora where I do absolutely nothing. (I bet Nora Roberts would do something more energetic than that, though)

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I have To Read Piles. Piles and piles. I buy books like other people buy peanuts. I love bookstores, the smell of books, the excitement before I crack open the first page.

What is one book everyone should read before they die?

Oh, that’s a really good and really hard question. Books—stories—are so subjective. Like music and visual art, they hit everyone differently. For me, East of Eden and The Hotel New Hampshire changed my life. The Bible ain’t bad, either.

What is your favorite time of year & why?

Summer. I don’t believe in cold and rain. Although, I’m sweating in misery while I type this. So, maybe I should change my answer?

Who is your Celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet them?

The Rock. If I met him, I would insist that we get married, and I wouldn’t take NO for an answer.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Read my book! I promise you’ll have a good time. Also, Thank you so much for interviewing me! This was a lot of fun.

Three months has been Gladie Burger’s limit when it comes to staying in one place: She’s always been a temp agency kind of girl, ever ready to move on. That’s why Gladie is more than a little skeptical when her eccentric Grandma Zelda recruits her to the family business in the quaint small town of Cannes, California. Gladie is also highly unqualified: Her beloved grandmother’s business is matchmaking, and Gladie has a terrible track record with romance. Still, despite evidence to the contrary, Zelda is convinced that her granddaughter has “the gift.” But when the going gets tough, Gladie wonders if this gift has a return policy.

When Zelda’s neighbor drops dead in his kitchen, Gladie is swept into his bizarre family’s drama. Despite warnings from the (distractingly gorgeous) chief of police to steer clear of his investigation, Gladie is out to prove that her neighbor’s death was murder. It’s not too long before she’s in way over her head—with the hunky police chief, a dysfunctional family full of possible killers, and yet another mysterious and handsome man, whose attentions she’s unable to ignore. Gladie is clearly being pursued—either by true love or by a murderer. Who will catch her first?

Interview with JL Vallance

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome JL Vallance to the blog for the 1st time

Destruction of the Soul - Banner

JL, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I was born and raised in northeast Ohio. I’ve lived here my entire life, except for the three years I gave San Antonio, Texas a go while my husband was in the USAF. I love fairy tales and anything supernatural in nature. I’ve always been plagued with an overactive imagination, and would always create fantastic stories at night to combat insomnia. A little over a year ago, I decided to start putting those stories down on paper. I still have insomnia, but my stories keep getting bigger and bigger.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

I can honestly say that writing is a newer dream of mine. I’ve always had a very vivid imagination, and I’ve also always been overly dramatic. One day I decided that I should take all of these stories that I entertained myself with at night during bouts of insomnia, and put them into something useful. In turn, I found that I really enjoyed writing. It was a therapeutic outlet.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

That is an interesting question…I’m not sure that I have one! I like to sit down with some coffee and good music and just type away. I don’t write in any specific order, just what feels right at the time.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

In Destruction of the Soul, Vivienne Drake continues on her quest for answers to her heritage. She continues trying to figure out fact from fiction, who is friend and who is foe. She figures out a little more about who she is and who she wants to be–not just as a Guardian but as a living, breathing creature in the world. There’s continued action, suspense, romance, pain, despair. It’s an intense and insane rollercoaster.

How did you come with the idea for this story?

Deep Into the Soul began as a simple love story, and it quickly changed and grew to the paranormal beast that it is now. It was a simple case of the story evolving on its own. I had been sitting at my desk, writing, and Vivienne had one of her nightmares…and the story just took off from there. Aedan entered into her world and everything changed.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I’m currently working on a novella for the Guild Series. The novella is kind of Aedan’s story. It’s his story of his love, his lost love…it will give readers a little bit of an idea of how he came to be where he is when we meet him in Deep Into the Soul–cold, heartless, ruthless. I love it because it shows a different side to him. I do love my bad guys, especially ones with many complex layers.

I’m also working on a contemporary romance. It’s a diverse love story about a boy and a girl and a love that has many, many challenges. That one is in the early stages still, but I hope that readers will love those characters just as much as they love The Guild Series crew.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I think I’d have to go with Stephen King. He seems so neat and genuine, and like he would have a wealth of knowledge and advice. I’ve read some interviews that he’s given, and he seems like he’d be great to sit and have a talk with.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Write what you feel and what you love. And whatever you do, trust what the story tells you…because sometimes, it just writes itself.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

I can tell you it won’t be anything involving me getting on a doggone airplane. I hate even the idea of flying. (Yep, that’s where Vivienne gets it from.) I would really love to travel to England and Scotland. I have heard there are cruise lines that go that-a way… Maybe?

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’m currently reading Sins and Needles by Karina Halle.

I cannot wait for the next Mageri Series book, by Dannika Dark, to come out later this year. I have really enjoyed this series and am looking forward to the next book while I’m also bummed that it will be the final one.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I thank each and every one of my readers for reading, reviewing, sharing, and following! Thank you so much for having me!

“There is more at stake in Aedan’s war than any of you realize.”

She’d let every one of her walls down, finally allowing others into her guarded circle, and all it brought her was pain and devastation. Now, out of fear and desperation, she’s turning to the one being she believes will be truthful with her; the only being that’s dared to give her anything resembling an honest answer–Linux, The Cruciatum.

The Daemonium is dangerous and mysterious, and offering Vivienne things that she’s been begging for. He offers her a chance at discovering what lies just beyond her reach. Though his motives remain far from clear, there is something within him that Vivienne is drawn to. And she wants nothing more than to believe in him, to believe in the things he tells her.

Together, they uncover details of Aedan’s plans, and discover what he intends to use his daughter for. Vivienne learns that she carries within her a destructive darkness, that if she allows, will consume her, and destroy the goodness she contains.

Fighting an endless battle against lies and deception, Vivienne must find the strength within herself to remain on a virtuous path. She’ll be forced to overcome pain and obstacles in order to discover the truth of just how deep the deceit runs within The Guild.

Can she remain above the darkness for the sake of Humanity and herself, or will she allow it to devour her light and destroy her soul?

Author’s Bio & Picture:
J. L. Vallance is a wife, mom, and nurse by day, while posing as a writer by night. Plagued with an overactive imagination, a lover of all things supernatural in nature, she has an extraordinary flair for the dramatic that adds flavor to life. There’s little in her world that Otis Redding and buttercream icing can’t fix. And of course, coffee always helps too. True story.

The Exemeus Blog Tour and Giveaway

theexemeustourbutton

I’m so excited to be a part of The Exemeus blog tour and introduce this new fantasy series.  I hope everyone will check this series out and I have these wonderful authors here today for an interview.

1. Tell me about your new release.
Firstly, thank you so much for having us on your wonderful blog. We greatly appreciate it. Our latest release is entitled The Exemeus and its about a boy who’s mere heritage makes him a threat to the government. In order to save his life and the life of his family he has to enlist the aid of the world’s most powerful warrior. There’s only one small problem-she’s dead.

2. Where did you come up with the idea for Exemeus ?
Honestly, I, Folami, was on an exit interview from a job and we were rehashing all of my accomplishments and I thought it would be a great idea to have a book that contained all of a person’s thoughts from the beginning to the end of time. The book that emerged in my head at that time is not quite like what we produced, but that was the start.

3. Did you have any actors in mind when you were writing your characters? The only person in our mind was Virginia should be played by Selena Gomez. She’s probably too old now,  but she was who we envisioned. Each of the cast of characters have unique abilities that make it hard for us to pick one person who can embody each person’s varying description.

4. What are you working on now?
We’re working on The Azemeon and the Gem of Jamaalya now, it’s the sequel. Clearly the title is a work in progress. Were debating about just leaving it as The Azemeon or adding the Gem of Jamaalya to the end. Anyone out there can feel free to chime in their title ideas or thoughts. Writing the second one is soooo much harder than writing the first, we hope all of our fans love it. The book was supposed to be finished by now, but we’ve had a ton of problems with production.

5. Are there any authors that you feel influence you?
Folami: We are very different in our reading choices. I love J.K Rowling, A &E Kirk, and Jennifer L. Armentrout.  J.K. Rowling has probably influenced me the most with her focus on planning. I love how characters and thoughts she mentioned in book one appeared in book three and so when you’re rereading the series you notice how much forethought she put into everything.
Abeni: I would have to say Jane Heller. She taught me that a book doesn’t have to fit into one genre. It can be funny, mysterious, adventurous, and riddled with romance. I love that aspect of her writing and I hope that we capture that in our writing.

6. Any advice for aspiring writers?
Abeni: Keep trying because it is all worth it when you finally have the finished product.
Folami: Find joy in the process or this business will suck you dry.
Abeni: Isn’t she inspirational?

About the Authors:

Folami and Abeni Morris are a sister-sister writing team. Together they wrote (and rewrote) The Exemeus, somehow managing to accomplish it without murdering one another. Despite their facial similarities, tendency to finish each other’s thoughts and stick up for each other constantly, no, they’re not twins and thus deserve their own individual bio.
Folami Morris:
Folami grew up in the tiny city of San Mateo Ca, where nothing ever happens and no one ever leaves. She went to Xavier University for undergraduate, getting her B.A in physics and her B.S in Biology. After graduation she returned to California, to live in an even smaller city, where even less happens, Antioch Ca. During this time she escaped the monotony by hanging out with her imaginary friends Hyalee and Dephon, and by writing the Exemeus. She finally escaped to Queens NY and now realizes that quiet and tiny aren’t so bad.
Abeni Morris:
As luck (and logic) would have it, Abeni grew up in the same tiny little town as her sister, then she too escaped to the tinier town of Antioch. She has yet to leave. She received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood development from Cal State East Bay. She is the mom of two amazing kids, who swear that they deserve a percentage of the book proceeds and a ton of the credit. At least she raised dreamers.

CHARACTERS: Dephon, Hyalee and Singleton

BOOK SYNOPSIS: Her short life was devoted to love and to hate.  Love of the man who stole her heart, hate for the man who stole the world.  Murdered by the government she swore to destroy, she’s been given another chance to make it right.  But to save the planet, she needs the help of the most powerful mystic the world has ever seen–unfortunately he hasn’t been born yet.

In a world where fear is the only currency, Dephon has committed the ultimate crime: inspiring hope.

His only goal is to make it safely through ninth grade, but on a post-apocalyptic Earth run by the Treptonian government, it isn’t that simple.  Heir to a legendary power, Dephon Johnson is the only threat to the government’s rule.  And on Trepton, all threats must be eliminated.  When hundreds of assassins are dispatched to neutralize him, Dephon is forced to fight back.  His only chance of survival is to enlist the aid of the greatest warrior the world has ever known.  The only problem is, she’s been dead for 13 years.

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Jennifer             NUMBER OF STARS: Four Stars

REVIEW: I was pleasantly surprised with this book because it had an interesting premise and I am usually not a big fan of dystopian fantasy. Dephon Johnson was a lonely kid who feels that there is nothing special about him.  He doesn’t have many friends and has been bullied mercilessly by the football team at his school.  Then, he comes home to a father who doesn’t seem to care and hasn’t taken an active interest in anything that Dephon seems to do.  On top of all that, he has been plagued by dreams of a beautiful woman with blue hair that is fighting to save the world with magic. He soon finds out that this mystery woman is actually his mother who died in battle and it is now up to Dephon to pick up where she left off.

I really liked The Exemeus because it was a very different dystopian adventure than what I’ve read previously and the story captured my attention so much that I stayed up reading it until the end.  I liked Dephon but my favorite character was Hyalee, Dephon’s mom, and we learn about her life through Dephon’s eyes as he reads her story called The Exemeus.  Hyalee’s life as a teenager, obtaining her powers and meeting Dephon’s dad, Singleton, play out in this story and I couldn’t help but like her. She was chosen to help defend this planet against evil and she died shortly after Dephon was born but we never really learn what happened to her in this book.  This book ends with a cliffhanger and I desperately want to read The Azemeon, which is the next book in the series to learn what really happened to Hyalee.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sylvia Day, America’s premier author of provocative fiction, delivers the debut novel from Cosmo Red-Hot Reads from Harlequin.
The realization that Jax still affected me so strongly was a jagged pill to swallow. He’d only been part of my life for five short weeks two years ago. But now he was back. Walking into a deal I’d worked hard to close. And God, he was magnificent. His eyes were a brown so dark they were nearly black. Thickly lashed, they were relentless in their intensity. Had I really thought they were soft and warm? There was nothing soft about Jackson Rutledge. He was a hard and jaded man, cut from a ruthless cloth.

In that moment I understood how badly I wanted to unravel the mystery of Jax. Bad enough that I didn’t mind how much it was going to cost me…

And watch for the release of “Aftershock” on Nov 12, 2013

Interview with Melissa Stevens

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome 1st time guest Melissa Stevens to the blog.

melissa profile picMelissa, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Hmm, I assume you don’t want the standard bio? Let’s see…

I was born and raised in a tiny town in southeastern Arizona. I married young and I now have 3 not so small children (they’re all in school now.) I spend most of the day while they’re at school, and a lot of the evenings too working on my writing.

I’m a part of a local writing group, and I do a lot of things for them. My pet ‘cause’ is American Soldiers

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Not really, I’ve always been creative but I never settled on any one thing I wanted to do. When I was about 15 my best friend’s dream was to be just like Garth Brooks. He had jobs lined out for everyone in his family, as well as me. I didn’t like what he chose for me, so I told him I’d just wait and write the tell all book and earn my money that way. He didn’t end up famous, (though he still plays in the same band he was in then) but I ended up writing, most of the time it’s all fiction, though now and then I’ll write something true to life.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?

Typical day… I get up at 5:45 and get the kids off to school and Hubster off to work. While doing that I do all my ‘playing’ online. Facebook, etc. at 8, once everyone’s gone, I get serious. What exactly that means depends on what stage I’m at. Sometimes it’s solid writing, sometimes It’s reading and revising. Once in a while it’s working on formatting. I work until it’s time to pick up the kids from school, stopping now and then to answer emails or respond to something on my Facebook page. Then depending on the scheduled evening activity, I often keep working through sports practice as well. Once the kids are in bed, if Hubster is home (he sometimes has to work nights or is away from home) we watch TV and relax a little, if he’s not home, I work until I’m tired enough to sleep.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?

I love the rush of finishing something, I also love the rush when someone, especially a family member tells me they really loved something I wrote. The most challenging part is working through issues I didn’t realize I had, until it was time for the character to deal with them.

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?RobinsNestBN-1

My latest is Robin’s Nest. It’s a stand-alone erotic romance, as in, it’s not part of either of my series, and I have no plans to make it a series of its own.

It’s the tale of Samantha, who goes by Sam, everything’s moving along fine in her life until she’s in a car accident that puts her in a coma for a week. Her best friend, Robin, never left her side. Soon after she awakens to find him there, she realizes that her feelings for him are more than friendship, but is she willing to risk what they already have for something more?

How did you come with the idea for this story?

Honestly? I don’t remember. I wrote this one about four years ago, it was my first novel length story and I wrote it in under 30 days. I’ve revised and rewritten it so many times. I honestly don’t remember what gave me the idea to begin with.

Can you share with us your current work in progress?

Currently I’m working on the first full length book in my White Mountain Chanat series. I started it with an erotic short story, Escape, and I’d planned for this one (still untitled) to be longer but along the same lines. My characters had other plans, they’ve informed me that while it will be steamy, it’s gonna take a while to get there, neither of them is willing to fall into bed and let the story play out amongst the sex.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

There are a lot of them, Dean Koontz, Laurell K. Hamilton, Lora Leigh, Jennifer Ashley are the ones that lead the list.

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?

Of course. I love the sudden twists and turns that Koontz has always had, I always tried to figure it out before he told me. I love the strong, kick ass Anita Blake from Hamilton, I wanna be Anita when I grow up, if only so I can keep Nathaniel. Lora Leigh has some of the hottest erotica I’ve ever read, and that’s saying something. I love Ashley’s relatable characters. Most of them seem like anyone you might meet next door (except for the fact they’re shifters.)

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Nauti Enchantress by Lora Leigh will be out in a couple of months, I’m eager for that one.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Don’t forget to check out my website and all of my books, Robin’s Nest is just my latest.

RobinsNestBN-1

After a car accident puts her in a coma, Samantha awakens to find her best friend, Robin, never left her side.  While she recovers, Sam realizes there’s more between them than just friendship, but she’s afraid. What if it doesn’t work out between them, and it ruins their friendship.

Sam’s brush with death gives her a renewed understanding of how short life really is. Deciding the possible benefits are worth the risk, she faces the challenges from her over-protective family head on and leaps into life with both feet. When more challenges come their way, can Sam and Robin handle them together?

Excerpt:

As I drew closer, I saw Robin push himself off the side of the truck and stand to his full height of 6’1″. He opened his pickup door and reached for something inside. I pulled the Jeep off the highway, and watched as he locked and closed the door then crossed the highway and rounded the Jeep to the passenger side. Robin isn’t a particularly large guy. Yeah, he’s tall, but he’s lean, like the basketball player he’d been in high school. I leaned across the seat and lifted the lock on the door to let him in.

“So, what’s the problem this time?” I asked as he climbed inside and closed the door.

“Damned rotor again,” he replied, tossing his baseball cap with his keys inside onto the dash. He ran his hand through his shaggy blond hair. It stayed back for maybe three seconds before falling on either side of his face again, framing his deep green eyes.

I waited while he buckled his seatbelt, then checked for cars before pulling back onto the highway. Only going far enough to make a U-turn without hitting his truck, before heading back into town.

“I thought you kept an extra one in the glove box for when this happens?” I asked.

“I do, but I used my last one a couple of months ago and I forgot to get more on my next trip to Safford, then I just spaced it.” He ran his hand through his hair again, only to have it fall right back where it started. “Of course, it was about time for Murphy’s Law to smack me upside the head again, so here we are.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you about ready to give up on that antique or are you gonna buy another case of rotors for it?” Ribbing Robin about his stubbornly keeping the old pickup, despite its oddities, was an old habit between the two of us. Though we dig at each other and bicker once in a while, I don’t think we’ve had more than two or three real fights in our entire friendship.

“So it eats rotors. So what? They’re cheap. The frame, body, and motor are all in good condition. Why junk a good machine for one small, and relatively inexpensive, inconvenience?” He easily fell right back into the old game.

“It’s broken down, and left you stranded along the side of the road, how many times now?”

“A few,” he admitted, “but I can usually repair the problem in less than fifteen minutes and be back on my way. It’s my own fault I ended up stranded tonight. Besides, if you’d been busy I would have found someone else, or eventually, someone would have come along and given me a ride into town.”

He’s right, someone would have come along. It was barely eight o’clock, and not quite dark yet. However, this wasn’t the most used road out of town and he might have had to wait a couple of hours before someone came along.

“What were you doing out here?” I glanced at him before looking back at the road.

“I was on my way back from a meeting in Lordsburg.”

“That sounds fun.” My tone was dry. I didn’t know what the meeting was for, but if had been something he had enjoyed, he would have shared more about it.

“Any leads on a new job?”

“Not yet.” I shrugged. “I’ll find something, I’m sure. The question is, how long until I do?”

“If you need something to make ends meet, I can put you to work. It’s long hours and muddy as hell, but it’s work.”

“I’ll keep that in mind, thanks. I’ve got a while before I have to worry, though. I have a good chunk in savings and since I don’t have a house payment or rent, it will go a lot farther.”

“That’s true.”

I reminded him that I’d pick him up at eight the next morning as I dropped him off in his driveway. I waited until he made it to the door before turning around and heading home.

Pulling out onto the highway my mind raced ahead. My thoughts were already back at the house. It was only eight thirty, I still had plenty of the evening left. I could settle back onto the sofa, but the thought of a hot bath was even more enticing.

Suddenly, I was drawn back to what I was doing by bright lights directed at my face. I shook my head and barely had time to register the vehicle that was supposed to be in the left lane, it was in mine instead. I had nowhere to go. I couldn’t avoid it. The last thought that went through my mind was “How badly is this gonna hurt?” then everything went black.

Interview with Jace from Kait Ballenger’s Twilight Hunter

*Kelly walks into room with small box. Sets box on table and turns to Jace with a wicked smile*

Kelly:  Hi Jace

Jace: Hey, Kelly

Kelly:  Thank you for taking time out of your busy life to sit down and talk with me.

Jace:   Yeah, sure. Frankie asked me to, so you know, I try to please her when I can.

Kelly *looks in box, pulls out bar of soap sets on table*

Jace: *raises an eyebrow* What the hell is that for?

Kelly:  So Jace, from what I have heard & read you have a bit of a foul mouth.  So let play a little game during our interview.

Jace: Yeah, I guess you could say that.

Kelly:  What I have in mind is every time you cuss…

Jace: *raises an eyebrow* You’re going to wash my mouth out with a fucking bar of soap?

Kelly: As I was saying *pulls out handcuffs* Every time you cuss I get to tie something down.  You game?

Jace: Shit. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Kelly:  Oops that is already two, but I will give you one freebie.  Right hand please *holds hand out*

Jace: *sticks out his right hand* I’m trying to bite my tongue here. I’m not sure I like this idea.

Kelly: *handcuffs Jace’s right hand to back of chair* Okay question number one.  Tell me about the Execution Underground.

Jace: Well, I guess I’ll go ahead. Frankie said our author wants us to give full disclosure, so I’ll lay it all on you. I’m a werewolf hunter for the Execution Underground. We’re a secret organization so normal humans don’t know about us

Kelly: So how is your job going for you right now?

Jace: Real shitty. Oh, motherfu— *he clamps his mouth shut*

Kelly: That is number 3.  Left hand please. Jace: *Grumbling, he sticks out his left hand*

Kelly: *Pulls out another set of cuffs and cuffs left wrist to back of chair*

Jace: This is not what I had in mind when Frankie mentioned this interview.

Kelly: Let’s talk about something happier.  Tell me how you met Frankie?

Jace: Well, at the time, I wouldn’t say it was a very happy situation, even though everything is cool now. I was out on a hunt for a sadistic bast— *cuts himself off*…bad guy. Yeah, that’s it bad guy. I was on the hunt for a sadistic bad guy when I came across Frankie. She’s a werewolf, you know, and that’s the type of monster I specialize in hunting, so when she showed up at the scene of the crime in wolf form, I didn’t take to kindly to that. We got into a bit of a scuffle, and then I handcuffed her. *he frowns* It seemed like a bright idea at the time, using her to get to Rochester’s packmaster.

Kelly: *pulls out rope* What is something about Frankie that might surprise the readers?

Jace: That she’s Rochester’s packmaster. I thought Frankie Amato was a dude. I mean, can you blame me? Packmasters are usually guys. She’s the first female one Rochester has ever had. Pretty impressive really.

Kelly: How do you feel about Kait telling your story?

Jace: Kait’s a little too much like me for my own taste sometimes. Not that she drinks or smokes like I do, but she’s just hard-headed and stubborn, and doesn’t take no for an answer. She gives me a dose of my own medicine, which isn’t always fucking pleasant.

Kelly: Number 4 Jace, Right leg…. *ties right leg to chair*   How are things going with you and Frankie?

Jace: Pretty good. Now that Robert, the sadistic freak we were hunting, is out of the picture, things have been pretty peachy.

Kelly: Can you tell us a little bit about how you got started with the EU?

Jace: My father was half-wolf which naturally made me aware of supernatural creatures. I decided to be an idiot and drop out of high school when I was sixteen to get my GED and join the Execution Underground. I’ve been training with them for a damn long time. Can’t say I completely regret it though.

Kelly: Dude, that was number 5, Left leg.  *ties left leg to chair*

Jace: This is starting to test my patience.

Kelly: *pulls out blind fold and gag. Smiles at Jace*

Jace: Are you fucking me?

Kelly: Your choice?  Blind fold or gag?

Jace: *he frowns* Blind fold.

Kelly: *walks behind Jace and puts blind fold on. Whispers* You know, you are really stubborn and I thought for sure that you would win this game.

Jace: I don’t have much when it comes to self control.

*soft click of door*

Kelly: Tell me your favorite thing Frankie

Jace: It’s hard to pick just one favorite thing, you know? She’s a great woman. Smart, good sense of humor, strong, beautiful. She’s the total package. Though I gotta admit when I first saw her in that alleyway, considering she had just shifted into human form and was naked as the day she was born, the first thing that attracted me to her physically was her awesome set of ti—

Kelly: *looks over at Frankie standing by the door and winks, cutting Jace off* —As you can see he didn’t do very well at this challenge.  I think that I will leave him in your hands to teach him a lesson about cussing in an interview.

Jace: Wait a damn second, Frankie’s here?

Kelly:  Bye, Jace. It was great talking to you.  We should do this again.

Jace: Aw, shit. I’m fucking in for it now…

Interview with Maisey Yates

unexpected2

Today I have Maisey Yates here to discuss her new release, Unexpected, which is the second release in her Silver Creek series.  I love this series because it is based here in Oregon and I have already told Maisey, I want to live on Cole’s Elk Haven ranch.  I hope everyone checks out this delightful series.

1. Tell me about your new release

Unexpected is a story about two people who have never met before…having a baby together. When Cole finds out that a clinic mix-up has resulted in a total stranger conceiving his child, he knows he can’t walk away. But figuring out how to deal with the stubborn – and sexy, mother of his baby is another issue entirely.

2. Where did you come with the idea for this series?
I love the idea of the IVF mix-up, because it takes the classic idea of the accidental pregnancy to a whole new place. These are two people who have NEVER met, having a baby together. But it was actually a picture of a cowboy that inspired this series. From there, I thought of Cole Mitchell, and his brother and sister. After that it was a matter of figuring out just who the perfect woman for him was…

3. Were there any kind of challenges to writing a small-town romance and what type of research did you have to do?
I am small town, so for me there was a level of comfort and familiarity to the small-town world that is absent from the category romance I write, which tend to be glamorous and urban. I love writing small town because it’s what I know.
4. What are you working on now?

I’m working on book 3 in the Silver Creek series, which is titled Unbroken and is scheduled for an August 2014 release. This is Cade’s story. You’ll meet Cade in Unexpected.

5. Which actors do you envision playing your characters?

That’s a tough one! Maybe…Henry Cavill and Cameron Diaz?

6. Any advice for aspiring writers?
Yes! Keep trying…and keep writing. Always write. If you submit something? Write something new. Writing is the best way to learn HOW to write, at least in my experience. 😉
7. What food or drink do you absolutely have to have while writing?

Coffee and marshmallows. 😀 Everyone on my twitter knows that!

About the Author:

USA Today Bestselling author Maisey Yates lives in rural Oregon with her three children and her husband, whose chiseled jaw and arresting features continue to make her swoon. She feels the epic trek she takes several times a day from her office to her coffee maker is a true example of her pioneer spirit.

In 2009, at the age of twenty-three Maisey sold her first book. Since then it’s been a whirlwind of sexy alpha males and happily ever afters, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Maisey divides her writing time between dark, passionate category romances  set just about everywhere on earth and light sexy contemporary romances set practically in her back yard. She believes that she clearly has the best job in the world.

Jennifer’s Review of Unexpected

unexpected2TITLE: Unexpected

SERIES #: Silver Creek #2

CHARACTERS: Kelsey Noble and Cole Mitchell

AUTHOR:  Maisey Yates

PUBLICATION DATE:  08/20/13

ORDER LINKS:  Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS: After spending another family wedding fielding questions about her non-existent love life, Kelsey Noble decides she’s tired of waiting around for things she could go out and get herself.  What Kelsey wants is a baby, and she doesn’t see any point waiting for a husband she’s not even sure she wants.  But a mix-up at the fertility clinic lands her with a hassle she didn’t count on.  A big, muscular hassle in a Stetson and cowboy boots.

Cole Mitchell is shocked to discover that a grand gesture for years past has come back to haunt him.  Now, thanks to a clerical error, a woman he’s never met is having his baby–and there’s no way he’s going to walk away and forget he has a child.

Trying to make nice with the unexpected father of her baby lands Kelsey in Silver Creek, Oregon, dealing with the kind of small town life she left behind years ago.  Even worse is dealing with the burning attraction she feels for Cole.  She knows adding sex to the mix is a very bad idea, but she’s not sure how long she can resist falling for the last man she ever expected.

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Jennifer             NUMBER OF STARS: Four Stars

REVIEW: I liked Kelsey right away because she had a lot of spunk and determination by making a decision to have a child on her own. She had the means to support a child and felt that she didn’t need a man to make her life complete.  I understood her surprise to find that her anonymous donor wasn’t so anonymous when Cole Mitchell showed up on her doorstep. I liked that even though it was a mistake at the clinic, Cole and Kelsey were determined to get to know each other for the sake of the child.  They both were hoping that this could turn into something more so they could both be involved in the child’s life.

Cole Mitchell was a handsome cowboy who had his hands full with the responsibility of handling his family’s ranch. Meeting Kelsey wasn’t what he had planned especially when he was still reeling from the mess that was his previous marriage.  He was sweet and bound to make sure that Kelsey was taken care of during her pregnancy.  I liked how when Kelsey practically threw herself at him that he wanted to take things slow and not rush things because he wanted to have a relationship with her.  You don’t see that very often in books where the guy is slowing things down instead of the girl. Cole was exactly what Kelsey was looking for and it took a clerical error to bring two special people into her life instead of just one.

I adored Unexpected because it was a sweet romance in a small town setting.  I really enjoyed Maisey’s first one, Unbuttoned and this new one is definitely a winner.  I can’t wait to read more about Cole’s sister, Lark, in the next book, Untouched, because she is due for a happy ending as well.

Interview & giveaway with Vicki Wilkerson

bikersandpearls2.0-2

Books-n-Kisses is pleased to welcome Vicki Wilkerson to the blog today

Vicki_Promo_PicVicki, can you please share with us a little about yourself

I was born and raised in a small, Southern town, just outside Charleston, South Carolina. I love this uniquely beautiful area along the coast, and it is the setting in all my books. This place is filled with enough unusual characters and bad actors to keep an author busy for a lifetime! For recreation, I love spending time at my family’s lake house and cooking. I learned the art of Southern cooking from my mother and grandmother, and I love sharing my recipes with readers and friends.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

A great big YES to that question! I used to love to sit on my grandfather’s front porch and listen to him tell stories. I was carried away. When I could write, I started writing short stories and poems. Writing has always been an emotional and a creative outlet for me.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?

Candles! When I get into my “serious writing mode,” I choose a specific scented candle for a specific book I’m working on. The scent triggers the “mood” for writing. It’s kind of like Classical Conditioning. I know, really quirky, but you asked!

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Bikers and Pearls is a sweet romance tells the story of how two very different people, a bad-boy biker and a Southern belle, struggle to put aside their differences and pasts to work together on a charity event to help save the life of a little boy they both love. It is a story of acceptance and forgiveness. April, my heroine, keeps getting herself into hilarious predicaments, and Bullworth (Bull), the hero, laughs at her, rescues her, and—in the end—falls in love with her.

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

Many times the theme of a book comes to me before the plot and characters. That happened with Bikers and Pearls. I wanted to create a story that taught others not to judge people by their appearances. As former high school English teacher, I loved exposing my students to the themes (or messages) in great books. That desire carried over to my own novels. I not only want people to be entertained by my books, I want them to take away something deeper. I hope readers will get a great story, internalize a valuable lesson, and learn new things about the South.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?

I am currently in edits on the second in the series of Summerbrook Novels. The working title is SWEET TEA AND TROUBLE. It is the story of Charlene, who is desperately working toward being the first female contractor in her small town, but Aiken, a successful commercial builder in the city, keeps inadvertently thwarting her efforts and ultimately gets her fired from her job at the Summerbrook Town Hall. It doesn’t help that she thinks he’s also trying to take advantage of her elderly grandmother with the repairs on her home.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

If I had to choose one, it would be Pat Conroy. He also writes about the South Carolina Lowcountry. He gets the quirkiness of the “characters” who live here, and he makes me laugh and cry.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Get into a REAL critique group with real authors! It is what helped me the most. I frequently meet new writers who feel they don’t need any help with their writing. Not so, even for the most seasoned writers. That is why we have publishers and editors and copywriters and proofreaders. New writers don’t know what they don’t know. They will do themselves a huge favor by joining a seasoned critique group. They can find groups online and through local writing organizations.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

Peace Corps work in a needy country would make my bucket list complete. I’ve done local work with local charities; however, I’ve always wanted to help others in a more profound way. In most instances, our poorest citizens cannot compare to what others endure. I want to make a difference…in what I do, in how I live, and in what I write.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Dorothea Benton Frank’s The Last Original Wife will be next and then Anne Rivers Siddons’ Burnt Mountain. Both writers tell wonderful, heart-warming, Southern stories. I am currently reading Our Husband by Stephanie Bond, and I’m laughing…a lot.

What does writing mean to you?

Writing for me is like breathing. It is not some part-time hobby—or merely a profession. I feel like I was designed and destined to write. I feel so grateful that I have the opportunity to share my stories and thoughts with readers, and I love hearing from them. A writer without readers is like a tree falling in the forest with no one to listen. Did it really make a sound? I love my readers, and I cannot wait to hear from more of them!

Who said tempting a sweet Southern belle would be easy?

When rebel biker Bullworth Clayton gets tangled up with pastel-and-pearls-clad April Church, sparks fly. Sure, April would clearly rather work with anyone else, but if teaming up with Bull means a successful charity event for a sick little boy they both care about, then so be it.

April is baffled at how drawn she is to the leather-wearing, tattooed Bull—he just doesn’t fit with her simple, safe, country-club life. And as much as the handsomely rugged man tempts her, she still can’t shake the images of the tragic motorcycle accident from her past, which left her scarred and her father broken.

Bull tempts her to don a pair of leather pants and go for a ride with him, while April desperately tries to resist her attraction to the wild side and keep her exploits hidden from her small town. Will they be able to navigate their differences and find a middle road to love?

Chapter One

Motorcycles were everywhere. April Church had never seen so many in one place in her entire life. Row after row and side by side, they had been lined up like opposing armies. Was there some kind of biker rally in town that she didn’t know about? No. That couldn’t be. Surely, something like that would have been announced in the Summerbrook Gazette.

She looked for a well-lit parking spot near the door of the buffet steakhouse, but after circling the bikes three times, she finally squeezed her car into the last space at the rear of the dark lot. Motorcycles flanked both sides of her car. Flames embellished the tank of the bike immediately to her left and razors decorated the one to her right.

She was trapped.

Trapped like she had been in her father’s car the night he’d accidentally hit a motorcycle—the night the dead man’s “pack” had surrounded them like wolves. And here she was again, encircled by bikes. She looked toward the building. In that steakhouse were the same kind of people who had left her father with a limp, bound to a cane for the rest of his life.

Why on Earth did she tell Mr. Houseman that she’d go to the meeting? Well, for many reasons, but the most important was Ben. He was special. Every time he saw her, he gave her a hug. Started out when she first helped him learn to climb a tree when the Humanity Project volunteers built his home. When he dropped down from that tree and into her arms, he also dropped into her heart. Ever since that day, he drew pictures of trees and gave them to her as gifts. Yep. He was special, and she had to do something to help the little boy’s parents with the mounting medical bills. Mr. Houseman was her mentor at the Humanity Project, and she owed him, too. She also thought about Miss Adree, the sweet, elderly lady in her condo building who taught Ben music lessons every Thursday evening. April loved picking up the little guy and remembered Miss Adree doing the same for her when she was a child. It was time to return favors.

Inside would be all the civic-minded organizations from town that were helping Ben, including the Summerbrook Ladies League. The bikers were probably at the restaurant for a completely different reason—some ride or party they had to plan. She glanced around at all the motorcycles again. There were so many.

Taking a deep breath, she gingerly opened the car door. But before she got the chance to put her foot on the asphalt, the painted flames on the motorcycle next to her pitched—almost imperceptibly at first. Or perhaps she was simply denying what was happening.

Down it went. The mirrors tilted and flashed the light of a distant streetlamp over the body of the beast. Stop! Somehow, it appeared to have picked up momentum on its way to its death. And then it crashed against the pavement, the clang grating up her spine as it hit. No! She couldn’t have touched that bike. She had been so careful.

As she stepped outside the car, a shiver iced down her spine in a cold gust of March air. The motorcycle lay there like a fallen soldier. The crash had amputated its rearview mirror, which was now in the middle of the lane. She looked all around her.

For a brief moment, she thought about bolting. But she’d never do that. She worked at a local insurance company as a risk assessment manager. Assessing her own risk, she determined that she was in real trouble.

She knew she could analyze her way out of this. Maybe she could set the bike upright again and no one would notice. That might work.

Fighting some awful thing inside that wanted to paralyze her, she drew up every bit of her strength, bent down, and grabbed the handlebars. With her eyes closed, she strained and jerked with all her might. But the beast wouldn’t budge.

Maybe she could at least fix the mirror. Though her hand shook—probably from the cold—she picked it up and tried to attach the cracked piece to the bent chrome on the side of the bike. She pushed and twisted and rocked the thing. Nothing worked. Now what was she to do?

She could call the police. But it wasn’t a traffic accident. She still didn’t believe that she’d touched the bike. No matter. What could she do but try to find the owner and tell him? Dread rose up in her. She would offer the biker her insurance information, and she could let her company argue the claim later. And if the bike’s owner grew angry with her here, she assumed the bystanders in the steakhouse would provide some protection.

Glancing around the dark lot, she noticed several other bikes with flames on their tanks. Great. Now she’d have a band of angry bikers come after her when she would announce that she’d knocked over a motorcycle festooned with flames.

Shaking her head, she tried to rid herself of the images of that night so long ago. But this was very different. No one had died. And she would accept complete responsibility, unlike her father, who’d blamed and angered the drunken bikers from Rebel Angels the night they’d played chicken with him.

Still holding the metal thing, she had an idea. The mirror was a totally different shape from the others around her, and it had a sticker with flames on the back. That would help. She’d find Mr. Morrow and a few of the people there for the fundraiser, and with their assistance, she’d approach the bikers with the mirror.

So she summoned all of her courage and bravely walked toward the entrance where a giant fake cow stood with an ominous look in his eyes. It watched her every step.

When finally inside, the scent of old coffee and burned grease assailed her. A gap-toothed hostess greeted April. “Welcome to Carolina Cow Steakhouse,” she said in a particularly slow Southern dialect—the brogue of her small town.

Not immediately seeing the people from the Summerbrook Civic Club, she turned to the waitress. “Umm, I’m supposed to meet a group here.”

The hostess perked up and smiled. “Are you here for Ben Evans’s Leukemia Fundraiser, too?”

April nodded and glanced around again, still hiding the broken mirror behind her back. She spotted members of the motorcycle crew secluded away at a couple of tables in a shadowy corner. Oh, boy. In a few short moments, she’d have to face them and confess what she’d done. Well, at least they weren’t going to be a part of the civic club meeting. After she gave them the broken mirror and her insurance information, it would all be over.

“You’ll have to wait here a minute ’cause I’m moving everyone into the larger banquet room. Y’all have more people than we expected,” the hostess said as she grabbed a few more menus and walked away.

April backed up against the wall to better hide the crooked chrome she held. Of all the stupid things that could happen.

With her free hand, she brushed at the pleats on her skirt to straighten them. Then she switched the mirror into her right hand and smoothed out the other side. Everything was under control.

“What do you have there?” inquired a low, masculine voice from above her head.

She snapped to attention like she was about to undergo a military inspection.

A handsome, muscular man in a black bomber jacket towered above her, larger than life. His shoulder-length hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail. Golden streaks highlighted his nut-brown mane. His indigo-colored eyes perused her face. “Is something wrong?”

She twisted the strand of pearls that draped from her neck between her fingers with her free hand. “No. Everything’s fine,” she said. It would be as soon as she could meet up with Mr. Morrow or some of the other members from the civic organizations.

“Then what are you hiding behind your back?”

He had seen. Oh, no. He had seen.

“Just a little mishap. I’m going to take care of it.”

“You ride?” The left corner of his mouth curled up. “In a skirt?”

“No.” She hoped her voice didn’t sound strained. “No, I’ve never ridden on a motorcycle before,” she said calmly.

He narrowed his eyes. “Then why are you walking around with a Harley dome billit mirror?”

That was a good question. Why was she? She held out the broken piece of the bike in front of her. “I don’t know how it happened. I was opening my car door, and then—”

He took it from her, examined it, and gave it back. “Let me guess. It just fell.” He tilted his head, exposing a strong, angular jawline. “All by itself.”

“That’s right. It really did happen that way. Exactly.” He probably didn’t believe a word she said. And she couldn’t blame him. She heard unlikely stories like hers from claimants at the insurance company all the time.

“Ahhh, I see. Sure it did,” he said. But the left side of his grin inched upward again. His eyes radiated light like the mirror in her hands. “Believe I know who owns that. ’Cause of the sticker on the back there.” He nodded at the chrome and took a step toward her. “Won’t be too happy, though. You want me to take you to him?”

A spicy scent replaced the old coffee and burned grease in the air. She looked around, half expecting to see one of the men from the Summerbrook Chamber of Commerce or the hostess with a can of air freshener. But April hadn’t ever experienced anything like that fragrance—not on a businessman or from a can. “No, thank you. I’m meeting some people here for a fundraiser first. They’ll help me.”

“I know where they are, too. It’s where I’m headed.” He touched her elbow. A warm tingle ran up her arm.

“The hostess said to wait here.”

“We don’t have to wait.”

“But—” Before she could protest, he placed his hand on the small of her back and guided her through the large, open restaurant and around a corner. With each step she took, her pulse beat faster.

They stopped at a door, which had a sign on it that read Banquet Room.

“You sure you don’t want me to handle that for you?” He arched his brow and glanced at the mirror.

“No, thank you. I’m going to ask Mr. Morrow to walk back with me. To tell those people in the corner of the main dining area.”

He opened the door. “Be my guest.”

As soon as she walked into the room, she knew she was in trouble. The large table in front was filled with people sporting leather fringes, rivets, Harley insignias, and long hair. Motorcycle people. But what kind of motorcycle people were they—the weekender kind who had regular day jobs, like the safe ones they insured at her company? Or some other kind?

A guy with a Z Z Top-looking beard stood up and said, “Hey, that’s my mirror.”

The packed room became silent.

April wanted to sink through the floor. “I’ll pay for it. I have insurance. I don’t really even know how it happened.”

The whole room stared at her like she was a liar. Trapping the mirror between her arm and side, she fumbled in her purse to get one of the copies of her insurance card she’d made at work in case she might ever have the need for it.

“She was probably standing there and it just fell over,” said one of the bikers at the table.

All the people at the table laughed. She turned to see Mr. Morrow standing silently behind the lectern, looking at his notes. Why wasn’t he backing her up? Surely he recognized her. She wanted to say, “It’s me. April Church.” In case he didn’t remember. But he only stood there looking unconcerned.

The tall, handsome guy who’d walked her back took the broken mirror from her and tossed it toward the biker with the long beard. “Okay, let’s go, Slug. I’ll give you a hand to upright your bike. This time. But you’d better fix that kickstand before that old motorcycle falls over again—with the next stiff breeze.” The handsome man looked at her. “Might accidentally hurt a pretty young lady next time.”

The group laughed more. Slug kept his eye on April as he inched around the table. She didn’t see anything funny. She’d known she hadn’t hit the motorcycle with her car door. But she’d been discombobulated all the same.

The man in the bomber jacket gave Slug a reprimanding look and then turned to her. “Slug here’s real sorry he hasn’t fixed that old kickstand. Even though we’ve been warning him about it for months. Right, Slug?”

“Yeah. I’m sorry and all,” said Slug. He reached out his tattoo-covered hand and snatched the mirror.

The two men left with the twisted chrome.

Slug didn’t sound very sorry. Even if the broken mirror wasn’t her fault, she didn’t want to face him alone in that dark parking lot. She was staying right where she was for the time being.

She wanted to do this for Ben. She’d have to stay no matter what.

Mr. Morrow said, “April, if you’ll take a seat, we can get started.”

So now he knew who she was.

Glancing across the room, she saw the ladies from the group she wanted to join all decked out in their Lilly Pulitzer sweaters and pearls, cozily talking around a couple of the round banquet tables they’d pulled together on the other side of the room. Shoot. All the other chairs were filled—except for two at the table with the bikers. The evening couldn’t possibly get any worse.

An older man with long, gray hair and a woolly beard stood up and said, “Here’s one, miss.”

Things had just gotten worse. All she could do now was to sit. She clutched her purse tightly against her body and eased her way between the tables to one of the two empty seats.

Nothing was going to happen. Everything would be fine now that her little mirror emergency was over. These people had to be good people, right? They were here to help Ben, too. And Ben needed lots of help.

April fidgeted with the pearls at her neck. She knew there was no good reason for her insides to be so tense. These people weren’t the same rioters from Rebel Angels who’d burned down her father’s old hardware store for revenge. She straightened the pleats again on her skirt, trying to forget about the unfortunate event that had divided the town. But how could she possibly forget with all the reminders at the table? The earthy scent of leather hung all around her.

She wound her arms around her purse and sat up straight. If only she could leave. But she wouldn’t know what to tell Mr. Houseman. She had already promised him she was going to help.

She moved her seat closer to the empty chair, but as soon as she had, the man in the bomber jacket returned. Without Slug. And he’d spotted the empty seat.

Nothing she could do now. She scooted her chair back to its original position and closed her eyes. Take deep breaths. Take deep breaths. With her next inhalation, her senses were filled with the most heavenly fragrance. Spicy and aromatic.

She opened her eyes to find the striking stranger sitting next to her. She turned to look at the table behind her.

The hostess closed the door. April was simply going to have to make the best of the situation. For now. Maybe later she could somehow wiggle her way over to the Lilly Pulitzer table. April also had an ulterior motive to help with the fundraiser. This was going to be her magic ticket into the Summerbrook Ladies League—something she’d always wanted—and something her mother had always wanted for her.

Her best friend, Jenna, had automatically joined the league years ago with all the other young debutants in town. Right after the big ball. April wanted to be a part of it—all the cookbook committees, the parties, and the fashion shows. She and her BFF would do them all together. If only she could get in. But she wasn’t a debutant and her family didn’t have the pedigree that Jenna’s did. Jenna didn’t care, though. Never had cared that April had her…past, and she loved Jenna for that. It wasn’t going to be so easy, however, for April to enter the cliquish league.

Mr. Morrow, president of the Summerbrook Civic Club, tapped a butter knife on the wooden lectern at the front of the room. “Thank you all for coming tonight. I guess you know why we’re here.”

She heard some stirring, and she caught a glimpse of a woman near the lectern nodding, but April didn’t move. She stared ahead and hoped to blend in with the others at her table. But how her pleats and pearls were going to fit in with all the rivets and leather she didn’t know exactly.

Mr. Morrow looked down. “When Ben Evans’s grandfather came to me and told me about Ben’s leukemia and his medical bills at the Children’s Hospital, I knew that all the Summerbrook civic organizations had to get involved in a big way. We’re all going to work together like we haven’t before.”

The handsome biker with the blue eyes and hard, angular jawline leaned in his chair and closed the space between them. She clutched her purse even tighter to minimize her presence at the table. She turned her attention back to Mr. Morrow.

“We’re all going to undertake multiple projects as quickly as we can for Ben. Those medical bills aren’t going away after only one fundraiser. Each table or team will choose a date for their event and the type of project they want to sponsor,” Mr. Morrow explained.

When Mr. Morrow finished, an old, woolly-bearded man in leather chaps stood up. “Jim, most of you know that Ben is my grandson. Oh, for those of you who don’t know, I’m Patch Evans.”

She’d had no idea who the man was—even though she knew Ben’s family well. Ben’s dad, Purvis Evans, had recently been laid off at the local car dealership, and his mom worked at April’s bank as a teller. She wouldn’t have guessed that Ben had motorcycle riders in his background. Not that that was bad or anything. It’s just that people in small Southern towns usually shared similar interests with their family members. Families were tightly woven units below the Mason-Dixon. Take a family who likes country club living…well, they all usually belong to the club. Take a family who likes NASCAR, well, mostly they’re hanging out together at the local racetrack.

She broke away from her thoughts when the old man choked out a few more words. “My family is terribly grateful for all your help.”

The lean bomber-jacket guy beside her moved again in his seat and looked into his lap. She was careful not to let him see her glancing at him from the corner of her eye. All the emotion in the room and at her table caught her off guard. Maybe that was why she was so…so…twitchy.

“No problem, Patch.” Mr. Morrow checked his watch. “In about an hour, we’ll stop and discuss what each team has decided. In the meantime, I’ll walk around and make sure we’re talking about different dates for each of the events.” He turned as the door behind him opened. “Betsy here will take your drink orders if anyone’s thirsty. Her sweet tea is so good, you’ll think your tongue will slap your brains out.”

Betsy smiled hugely at the compliment. She didn’t seem to mind the crevice between her teeth. Or the unusual expression of praise. April wished she could be less uptight—like Betsy. But April worried about most everything, a trait she grew up recoiling from because of her own overprotective mother. And old-fashioned grandmother.

Betsy leaned over to take a drink order from the table beside her and April saw something Betsy would have minded. She had a small split in the seam of her trousers. April’s heart ached for her. Gapped teeth and pants.

Chairs grated on the tile floor as people settled down in their groups to talk. April glanced at the table to her left. No room to move her chair. She peered at the table behind her. If she turned her seat around, it would look bad. She eyed the door. But she couldn’t leave. For so many reasons.

At her table, a middle-aged man with a red bandana said, “How ’bout I start. I got some ideas you guys might like. Oh, excuse me. And ladies. I’m Crank Allman, by the way.”

What kind of ideas did these people have? Coming up with names like Crank and Patch—not to mention Slug. In all her twenty-six years, she’d never heard of so many odd monikers in one place. At one table. Whatever happened to names like Bill and Bob?

She twirled the pearl ring on her left hand and noticed how much it looked like a wedding band when the pearl was on the palm side, so she left it that way. Wouldn’t hurt if anyone there thought she was married.

“I’m gonna need me a secretary, though.” Crank paused. “How ’bout you?”

She didn’t look up. He couldn’t possibly be talking to her. She was planning to move her chair to the sweater-and-pearls table as soon as it wouldn’t look so obvious. These people probably didn’t want her in their group anyway. She was merely waiting for the right moment to oblige.

The bomber-jacket guy next to her reached for her arm. “I think he’s talking to you.”

She startled at his touch. His strong hand was warm and almost electric. She tried to smile. “I don’t know that I’ll be here that much longer. Maybe someone else should volunteer.”

“I’ll take over if she has to leave early,” said the blue-eyed man sitting next to her. He smiled and handsome lines formed parentheses on each side of his mouth. The angles of his jawline and his perfectly straight, perfectly white teeth made him look like a male model in one of those Armani suit ads. Without the suit, of course. “The two of us can share being secretary.”

He had to be kidding. She tried to hide the concern from showing in her face. There wasn’t a pig’s chance at the Miss Summerbrook Fire Queen Pageant she was going to stick around—not with the cookbook clan merely feet away. She didn’t know a single one of the people at her table. But she couldn’t let on to them right now that she was uneasy. And had a completely different agenda. She had to go along for the time being.

Think, girl, think. There had to be a discreet way out of this. If there was, she was going to figure it out. She always did.

Crank tossed a spiral notebook onto the table. “You each need to write down your name, address, and phone number so our secretary—excuse me—secretaries can keep a record in case we need you for something before our next meeting.” When the good-looking man beside her received the list, she watched as he wrote, “Bull Clayton.”

Bull? The Ladies League gals would have boyfriends and husbands named Preston and Tillman and Hamilton. There was just no end to the crazy things bikers called themselves. Bull looked nothing like a thick male bovine as his name implied. A svelte stallion, maybe. When he finished writing his phone number, he pushed the notebook in front of her.

She couldn’t write her address and phone number in there. Who knew where that list would end up? And even though nothing would probably come of jotting down her number, she didn’t need to take the chance. In fact, she’d been the one at her agency to order and distribute the pamphlets on personal safety last month. Single women living alone shouldn’t advertise their addresses and phone numbers. That was rule number one. At least the accident had had one positive effect—steering her toward a suitable career—a career at which she excelled in being careful.

She glanced up at Bull, who still had his arm extended and hand on the spiral notebook. A feeling of fireflies fluttering in her lower tummy warmed her in a way she’d never experienced. Her body wasn’t being careful at all.

This was all too difficult to absorb and she felt a twinge deep inside her head. Oh, no. Another of her stupid headaches was trying to settle in. The whole evening had been filled with tension. Of course, a migraine would follow.

She closed her eyes. The flashes of light came first, and then the old crash came rushing back. The screams. The sirens. The fire.

She opened her eyes and shook her head. If only she could erase what the Rebels had done. But that was impossible.

There had to be a way for her to deal with this problem. All she had to do was analyze it and sort it out. That might be hard to do at the table; however, all the bikers were busily talking to one another and weren’t paying any attention to her. Thank goodness.

Just then Betsy walked toward her. April took off her sweater, whispered in Betsy’s ear, and wrapped the sweater around Betsy’s waist. She gave April the most beautiful smile ever.

Great. The bikers were still debating something. No one had seen.

Her phone vibrated. Jenna. With the phone in her lap and hidden by the table, April texted back.

Can’t talk now.

April’s head tensed more. Another text from Jenna.

What’s wrong?

April took another deep breath, trying to compose herself, trying to keep the headache away.

Long story. I’ll call when I’m out of here.

She really needed to pay more attention to what was going on at the table. Lucky for her, she was off their radar. Her cell vibrated again.

Out of where? I thought you were at league thing with the girls.

She wasn’t going to get rid of Jenna without an explanation so she texted where she was and what had happened.

…but this guy named Bull helped me out, so I’m okay.

April sucked in a deep breath. Little lights twinkled in her vision from the headache that was trying to get a foothold in her brain.

Maybe answering Jenna’s text wasn’t such a good idea. She had a tendency to be overly alarmist. And obviously April had a tendency to be overly stupid for telling Jenna anything. No imagining what she was going to do.

Maybe April should just leave. But what if Slug was still out there? He hadn’t come back to the banquet room, and his motorcycle had been parked beside her car. By now, he could have rounded up all his friends from the other corners of the restaurant.

She had to be reasonable, though. He shouldn’t be upset at her because he hadn’t fixed his own kickstand.

There was another problem with leaving, as well. What would she tell Mr. Houseman? And Ben? She couldn’t face letting him slip away. Then there was the league. Too much was at stake. Whatever it takes.

No matter what, she was going to stay. Tonight. She could always call Mr. Morrow next week and ask to be reassigned to another group—even if it wasn’t the league ladies—as long as she did something to help Ben. Bull pushed the notebook back in front of her. She stole another look at the handsome man. Humph. Nothing like Bull had ever ridden into Summerbrook before.

She needed to get her mind on the work at hand, though. As she read some of his words, she became confused.

With finality in his voice, Crank said, “So, the weekend of April 28th is the best date.”

Curiosity got the best of her. It sounded like they were planning to do something big the weekend of her birthday. She raised her hand again. “Excuse me.” She cleared her throat. “What exactly are you doing, and what does ‘Bikers for Ben’ and ‘Ride for a Reason’ mean?”

Crank said, “Well, we decided that we’d do a charity bike ride, gettin’ sponsors to donate money for each mile we ride from Summerbrook to the Charleston Battery and then on to the Children’s Hospital.”

She lowered her head and tapped her pencil. In a low voice she said, “What about a bake sale or a charity auction or something?”

A burley man with a handlebar mustache and muttonchops spoke up after everyone chuckled. “We don’t know nothin’ ’bout no bakin’ or no auctionin’. All’s we know is bikes.”

Bull had taken off his jacket and rolled up his sleeves, and she could see muscular definition in his forearms. Was he ever fit. “What Chops means is that rides are what we know best to raise money. We’ve done it before. It’s what we do well.” He smiled that same Hollywood smile that she’d noticed before—the one that kept taking her off guard.

He moved his arms forward on the table and she saw a piece of a tattoo, but as quickly as she saw it, he tugged at his shirt and it disappeared under his sleeve again.

“But I thought—” April stopped midsentence. She’d be home soon and the whole thing could be their little kettle of fish. “I’m sorry. A biker-rider thingy is fine. Just fine,” she said as she leaned back in her chair.

“Good,” said Bull. “Because you and I are in charge of permits and advertising.” He smiled again, the left side inching up more than the right. No, it wasn’t quite a smile. It was more of a grin.

With his perfectly straight teeth. If someone would turn him in on one of those makeover shows and cut and style his hair, he’d be downright dangerous. But he didn’t know what he was talking about because she wasn’t about to help with any of their far-fetched ideas. She couldn’t. With her aging father’s cardiac condition, it would absolutely kill him if he ever found out.

The man named Crank explained all about what they had decided. She sat there biding her time and tried to blend in with the furniture. Then her cell rang. So much for trying to look inconspicuous.

“I’m sorry,” she said. She pressed the phone to her head as tightly as she could and bent down toward the table. Everyone in the group grew silent as Jenna’s voice barreled through the little cell phone.

“I called Mr. Houseman. He said he can’t help you right now. April, I think you could be in a lot of danger. I asked around about that Bull guy and found out he had been involved with Rebel Angels. Those people might have chains or knives—or even guns.”

Yeah, they might. But why would they want to use them on her? Because she was wearing pleats?

Jenna’s voice grew even louder, if that were possible. “Be careful. Stay away from the bikers and get your butt home.”

“Jenna, don’t be ridiculous. I’ll talk to you later.” April quickly ended the call and looked up at Bull. He raised his eyebrow, and a strange expression covered his handsome face. It was almost another smile. Wait. No. It was a smirk. She knew it. He’d heard everything Jenna had said—about the chains, the knives…and Rebel Angels.

How dare he be snarky with her? She sat up, glanced around, and realized by the looks on their faces that the others had heard Jenna, too.

Before, she was merely being paranoid, but now she had a real reason to worry. That phone call would have insulted anyone. In Jenna’s effort to be a mother hen, she’d actually made the situation worse.

She had two options. She could stand, run, and take her chances in the parking lot with the chains and knives Jenna had mentioned, or she could prove them all wrong. Being the chicken that she was, she said, “Well, people. When do we get started?”

Interview & Giveaway with Grace Burrowes

Books-n-Kisses is please to welcome Grace Burrowes to the blog today.

GraceBurrowes (1)Grace, can you please share with us a little about yourself
GB: I’m a lifelong reader of romances, single mom, child welfare attorney, horse girl, and oh, yeah… historical romance author.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

GB: I am still ambivalent about  being a “published” author—publication changes things, and can reduce the time available for writing—but I’ve always loved to write. Once upon a time, though, one of my keeper authors wrote a book that just did not work for me. I started my first manuscript to exorcise that disappointment, and twenty more manuscripts quickly followed.

Are you a plotter or a pantser or combo of both? And you explain the difference?
GB: I think everybody is some combination. I tend to have a general sense of what the character and dramatic arcs will be for my protagonists, but that often changes in the course of drafting the book. Mostly, I focus on coming up with a strong opening scene, one that will impel all the characters’ fears, regrets, and mayhem FORWARD.  I think of a pantser as somebody who doesn’t start writing until they have a completed outline. I envy that degree of organization.

What is your most interesting writing quirk?
GB: Hmm. There come times in EVERY book when I stare at the computer and think, “I can’t finish this one. This is tripe. This is never going to work. Who thought up this baloney and why am trying to make a book out of it?” We talk about the romance novel having a big, black moment. What a lovely idea—only one big, black moment per book! For my writing process, there are MANY big black moments.

Can you please tell us about your latest book Once Upon a Tartan?
GB: Once Upon a Tartan is the second book in my Scottish Victorian MacGregor Trilogy, which amounts to a tug of war over a child’s best interests between two people who are reluctantly falling love, though neither is the child’s parent or guardian. Toss in some betrayal, some naughty Latin, and the lovely, long Highland evenings, and much mischief ensues.

Once Upon a Tartan CoverHow did you come with the idea for this story?
GB: My editor told me early on that part of my job is to torture the hero. One of the best ways to do that is to make him choose between competing demands of honor. In this case, Tiberius Flynn, Earl of Spathfoy, must choose between the father relying on Tye to attend to family duty, and the woman Tye’s falling in love with, Hester Daniels, who hopes he’ll put honor above duty. Tough choice, for a (secretly) tender-hearted man…

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
GB: I’m working on a 2014 Christmas story for Tiberius’s sister, Lady Joan Flynn. Christmas is approaching, and all she wants is a husband—any husband, provided he’s willing to marry her immediately.

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

GB:  I have met Joanna Bourne, Mary Balogh, Jennifer Ashely, Loretta Chase, JR Ward, and Julie Anne Long. I guess that leaves Judith Ivory. I’d like to meet her to tell her how very much her books means to me, how many difficulties they got me through, and how I admire her prodigious talent. I’d also like to put a personality with all those wonderful stories.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
GB: WRITE. Write more than you aspire to write, write more than you plan to write, talk about writing, or meet with other writers. Go quietly amid the noise and haste that is the pre-published author’s burden, but mostly, WRITE.

Can you share with us something off your bucket list?
GB: I’ve studied French, German, Spanish, and Latin, but I’ve never been fluent in a foreign language. I’d love to spend an entire summer in Scotland. I want to get my bronze medal as a dressage rider.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
GB: Eloisa James’s Once Upon a Tower. EJ is one of my original keeper authors, and that book is pure, unalloyed GOLD.

What is one book everyone should read before they die?
GB: Well. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. This very readable little tome busts the myth that scientific progress is rational, and explains why so often truth, particularly a new truth, does not carry the day. In these interesting times, that explanation is a comfort, as is the realization that truth does eventually win out, though it can take a generation or two for the paradigm shift to take hold.

What is your favorite time of year and why?
GB: Autumn. I always perk up when the weather cools off, the light gets sharper, and the days shorter.

Who is your Celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet him/her?
GB: The Dalai Lama. If I met him, I would thank him for consistently speaking reason and kindness in a world that can be unreasonable and unkind.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

GB: THANKS!!!

Honor or happiness—he can’t have both.

Tiberius Flynn may be every inch an English lord, but smart, headstrong beauty Hester Daniels has no use for his high-handed ways–no matter how handsome, charming, or beguiling he is. They only see eye to eye in caring about the feisty little girl who is under their protection.

Tiberius’s haughty insistence that his wealthy estate in England is a better place for the child than her beloved, rundown Scotland home sparks Hester’s fierce protectiveness, and the battle lines are drawn.
