Viking-Warrior-Rising---Tour-Graphic

AsaMariaBradleyHighThis November Asa Maria Bradley releases the first in her exciting new Viking Warriors series, Viking Warrior Rising! To celebrate, Asa’s here to play a game of Marry, Kiss, Kill with three names we provided. For this round we gave her Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Brad Paisley.

Can I just make all the Brads my husbands? Maybe we could just put their first name on the marriage certificate and nobody would notice if I rotating schedule for my husband? Please? No? Okay, if I have to make a choice I’d marry Bradley Cooper. I’ve had a huge crush on him ever since the Alias TV show. He was amazing in Silver Linings and I like how he doesn’t take himself too seriously, as evident by him resurrecting his character for the remake of Wet Hot American Summer. And who wouldn’t make out with Brad Pitt?! We’d be kissing for a long, long time once I got my hands on him. That leaves only one Brad and unfortunately I have to eliminate him according to the rules of this game. The only reason Brad Paisley will perish is because he is the Brad on whom I’ve had a crush for the shorter time. No hard feelings, Mr. Paisley. I still love the hat, and the sexy grin, and the swagger.

Immortal Vikings are among us

Leif Skarsganger and his elite band of immortal warriors have been charged to protect humanity from the evil Norse god Loki.

Under attack from Loki’s minions, Leif is shocked to encounter a dark-haired beauty who fights like a warrior herself. Wounded and feverish, the Viking kisses her, inadvertently triggering an ancient Norse bond. But when Naya Brisbane breaks away and disappears before the bond is completed, Leif’s warrior spirit goes berserk. If Leif doesn’t find her fast, he’s going to lose himself to permanent battle fury.

But Naya doesn’t want to be found…and he’ll do anything to find her. Because they’re both running out of time.

Asa Maria Bradley grew up in Sweden surrounded by archaeology and history steeped in Norse mythology, which inspired the immortal Viking and Valkyries in the Viking Warriors series. She came to the U.S. as a high school exchange student and liked it so much she never returned home. Asa holds an MFA in creative writing and an MS in Medical Physics. She lives on a lake deep in the pine forests of the Pacific Northwest with her British husband and a rescue dog of indeterminate breed. Visit her at www.AsaMariaBradley.com.

An Excerpt:

Leif strode toward her, stopping a few paces away, concern on his face. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” she croaked. The air between them crackled, making the hairs on her arms stand up. Was she the only one feeling this?

He took a step closer and cupped her cheek in his palm. “Are you sure? You look a little pale.”

She resisted the urge to rest her head in his hand. “No, I’m fine.” She took a step back.

He frowned.

“We found one more bug in the game room.” Her voice sounded rough.

“Ulf told me.” He stepped toward her, eyes blazing.

“We’re working on the computers tomorrow,” she whispered, taking another step back. He crowded her. His body heat confused her, making her want impossible things. She cleared her throat. “It shouldn’t take us long to improve your firewall and install a few security checks.”

Leif watched her silently.

“You want to sit down?” She gestured toward the arm chairs.

“Sure,” he said, but didn’t move.

Naya had to step around him. Her skin sizzled when her arm accidently brushed against his. Relieved, she sank down in one of the blue chairs. A small table created a barrier between her and Leif. “So,” she said. “You were going to explain what makes you different from regular humans.”

He sat down in the empty chair, elbows on knees, studying his clasped hands. After a few moments he tilted his head and looked at her. “I’ll try to answer all of your questions, but some of this may sound a little crazy.”

“I’ll keep an open mind.”

Leif’s eyes met hers. Whatever he saw in them seemed to satisfy him. “I died in 1050.” He paused, watching her reaction.

Naya kept her gasp from escaping and instead nodded encouragingly.

“In the Norse culture, warriors who die in battle or die a heroic violent death are sent to live with the gods in Asgard. The men spend their time training in Valhalla with Odin. The women are schooled by Freya.”

Naya’s mind reeled. What he described didn’t seem possible, but he was so sincere. Obviously he believed his story to be true. “I thought there were only male warriors in the Nordic tradition.”

“Most stories are based on the old Icelandic sagas. They describe Valkyries as leading the men to Valhalla.”

“And that’s not the way it is?”

Leif smiled. “The sagas were all written by men long after the Viking age ended. They didn’t know what happened in Freya’s meadow and took some poetic license.”

“So, typically male, instead of just saying ‘I don’t know,’ you make up shit instead.”

He smiled, his dimples stealing her breath. Again.

She looked away. “So, this place where the gods live, this is the Nordic heaven?”

“Not exactly. It’s the warriors’ reward for dying an honorable death. They are allowed to live on, to fight again.” He studied his hands. “I don’t remember much of Valhalla. Time flows differently there. All my memories run together as if they happened the same week.”

She looked up to find him watching her. “I’m sorry, I’m trying to follow what you’re saying. But—”

“It is a little crazy?” He smiled.

“A little.” A lot.

“Is it any crazier than being abducted and kept in a camp? Any crazier than enhancement injections?”

“Touché.”

Guest Review Dianna reviews Dead To The World by Charlaine Harris

TITLE: Dead To The World
SERIES #: Sookie Stackhouse #4
CHARACTERS: Sookie & Eric
AUTHOR: Charlaine Harris
PUBLICATION DATE: 05/03/05
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In Sookie Stackhouse—a Southern cocktail waitress with a supernatural gift—Harris has a created a heroine like few others, and a series that puts the bite back in vampire fiction. Now the hit series launches into hardcover for Sookie’s biggest twist-filled adventure yet.

When cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse sees a naked man on the side of the road, she doesn’t just drive on by. Turns out the poor thing hasn’t a clue who he is, but Sookie does. It’s Eric the vampire—but now he’s a kinder, gentler Eric. And a scared Eric, because whoever took his memory now wants his life.

REVIEW:
Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress. Just ask her and she will tell you that. But that’s where the normalcy stops.

She has a vampire “hidey-hole” in her closet, an ex-boyfriend who is a vampire, and a boss who is a shifter. In fact, most of her acquaintances are of the paranormal variety.

This fourth entry into Harris’s Southern Vampire Series is just another hit with a sense of humor, a smear of gore, and wisps of paranormal romance and suspense.

Where else can you come across a partially naked man running on the side of a dark, country road? Of course good-hearted and humane Sookie cannot abide by someone alone, in the winter cold, and apparently in trouble.

It seems this man has not a clue as to who he is, where he is, or how he got there. However, Sookie knows who he is, Eric Northman – Vampire Sheriff of Area 5. Eric does think that whoever took his memory also wants his life.

Eric’s memoy loss has changed him from a pompous person into a very kind, gentle, and basically innocent man, I mean Vampire. A version of Eric that Sookie finds difficult to resist.

Sookie’s investigation into the who, why, and what for, leads them into an adventurous and dangerous battle between Vampires, Weres, and Witches. These Witches are not simply Wiccans, but Weres as well. Did I mention that they drain and drink Vampire blood? Only by capturing the leader of the witch group can Eric be returned to his former self.

At the same time Sookie is trying to focus on solving Eric’s perplexities, another travesty occurs. Jason, Sookie’s brother and only living relative (except for a cousin that can’t be found), has disappeared. While the police think the worse and feel he is dead, Sookie refuses to accept this. Her research introduces her to the natives of the little village of Hotshot. The inhabitants are strange and aloof and for a good reason! They play heavily into Jason’s disappearance as the last person to see Jason alive is from Hotshot.

For fans of the Anita Blake Series by Laurell K. Hamilton on a lighter version, the Sookie Stackhouse Series is right up your line. Harris always leaves your curiosity tweaked and looking forward to the next book and this one is no exception.

Hero Material by Adrienne Giordano

One of my favorite questions readers ask me is where I get my ideas from. Typically, the story behind a book is actually quite boring. It usually comes from something on the news or in the newspaper that sparked an idea.

That trend was broken about a month ago when I tagged along with my sister and niece on a college campus tour. Our tour guide was a barely-legal-to-drink young man who was chatting up my niece and asked her if her companions were her sisters. Now, for the record, let me say my niece is eighteen, I’m forty-six and my sister is fifty-five. So, if we were her sisters, there would be one heck of a great story behind that.

After hearing Charm Boy lay the “sisters” line on my niece, my first thought was that I loved him. Loved him! I informed him of this sudden attack of undying affection, which, yes, made him laugh.

My second thought was that this slick young buck had just scored the coveted spot as a hero in one of my books. Yep. That fast, Charm Boy became the top dog.

He needed some tweaking though. First, he was too young. I added nine years and made him twenty-nine. After all, it would be nice if our hero could legally order a glass of wine at dinner. I also made him a little taller. J And he’d have a slick smile to go with that Charm Boy attitude.

Then I needed my guy not to be a film student. We’re talking romantic suspense here so I thought maybe a detective or a DEA agent. Something in law enforcement. Definitely. He also had to be in a situation where he’d meet the heroine and her mother and aunt and lay that “sisters” line on them. Not a problem. Let’s do some kind of benevolent ball where they all meet and where someone may or may not be murdered. We need a little mayhem thrown in with our love story. Within five minutes, I had a new hero, a heroine, her aunt, her mother and where their initial introduction would happen.

In case you’re wondering, I was thinking of all this as Charm Boy continued talking about the benefits of the campus we were visiting. Just don’t tell my niece I wasn’t paying attention. That might upset her. J

So, there you have it, one of the ways I come up with story ideas. I observe and take notes. Of course, this is something my friends and family have learned (the hard way) about me. They know anything they say or do is considered fodder. Some have even gone “off the record” so I’m not compelled to use their mishaps. Now you know why I have a plaque on my desk (given to me by a close friend) that reads “Careful…or you’ll end up in my novel.”

Readers, what experiences have you had that you think should go in a book?

Opposing Forces

Excerpt from Opposing Forces

Prologue

Greg Leeds knew if he opened his balcony door, there’d be no turning back. His heart banged—buhbum-buhbum-buhbum—had to be five hundred beats a minute. He closed his eyes. Anything to block the surge of emotions smothering him, sucking away what was left of his life.

Relax. Stop thinking.

After a moment, he opened his eyes. One lone lamp on the side table lit the room and the sofa they’d bought last year, a white one, showed the abuse of their four-year-old. What the hell had they been thinking buying a white sofa? He and Marianne had laughed over that gaffe and chalked it up to a lack of parenting experience. He wanted to hope there would be more of those parental missteps. Wanted to.

Walk away.

If he had any sense, he would catch up with Marianne and sweet little Evan, who were on their way to the evening showing of Disney’s latest 3-D flick. The pall of quiet over the house pushed Greg one step closer to the balcony and his heart tripped five hundred again.

For weeks he’d been at this routine. Teetering on this fucking precipice of despair while eyeballing that fucking door with that fucking lock. Each time he’d backed away. Convinced himself he could make things right.

Until this morning.

This morning it was made clear—there would be no redemption. Wanting only to provide for his growing family, he’d played the game and lost. His dream had been simple: get out of the tiny apartment and into a place with a yard where Evan could play with his friends. Somehow, Greg had slipped off track. Or maybe he’d jumped.

At first, it was one small thing. A second of miscalculation. A minor error. Then it became a moment and the moments turned into hours and the hours turned into days and before he knew it, he’d fucked up good.

No turning back.

His scalp tingled and he absently rubbed the spot. Outside, darkness continued to descend on Chicago’s streets.

He took one more step to the door, close enough to touch the handle. To unlock it. To open it. And then the burst of frigid early March air—thirty-six degrees’ worth—blasted him. Somehow, the cold settled his nerves.

She won’t want you now. Why would she?

Little by little, moment by moment, hour by hour, he’d betrayed Marianne and Evan.

From eighteen stories below, a truck horn, that long, piercing blare, sounded. Rush hour. Pedestrians. He should check.

No. Didn’t need to. He’d lived in this building five years. He knew the traffic patterns. He stepped onto the balcony and dragged the iron bistro chair next to the rail.

Minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, he’d thrown his life away. He was the only one who knew. They’d know now. Marianne, his family, his friends. Evan.

They’d know now.

He closed his eyes, breathed in that frigid air and began to shiver. Fear or cold? Not sure, but his dress shirt offered little protection from the lake wind.

Stepping to the rail had been the farthest he’d made it in weeks. It must be the right thing if he’d come this far.

Across the street, half the units in the building were dark. Directly across from him, right in his sight line, one was lit. A bright light in a sea of darkness. There was his answer. The light.

He stepped onto the chair and his breath disappeared into another gust of wind. Somehow he’d started to sweat, and his mind looped. Do it. Don’t do it. Do it.

Too late to think now. Should have done that earlier. When he could have stopped it. Tears streamed down his face. Crying was for sissies and screw-ups. Wasn’t that what his father had always said?

Another car horn sounded and Greg stared at that lone light across the street. A shriek built in his chest, worked its way up his aching throat and bullied its way out.

Into the descending darkness, with the car horn blasting and his mind roaring, Greg hoisted himself over the rail and plunged to the street below.

Chapter One

Jillian decided she might be the biggest idiot in the city of Chicago. Eleven o’clock on a Friday night and she should be doing things that didn’t include schlepping to her office in a distribution warehouse on the South Side of Chicago. Just driving down the street on the South Side could get a girl slaughtered.

And yet, here she was, retrieving her beloved two-thousand-dollar camera. The one she’d forgotten in her desk drawer, thereby making her the biggest idiot in Chicago. One thing she knew for sure, this would never happen again. All she could hope was that someone hadn’t made off with it.

This camera was more than just valuable. It represented two years of what she could achieve when she set her mind to it. Pinching pennies, giving up lattes—whatever it took to accomplish her goal of owning a camera every amateur photographer would carve out an eye for. And that was saying something. Considering photographers needed their eyes.

She reached into the drawer and her fingers brushed the soft leather of the camera case. Still there. To be sure, she unzipped the bag and found her precious baby, its lovely lens cover nearly smiling back at her. She snatched it out of the case, set it on her lap and gently ran her hand over the smooth surface. A grown woman shouldn’t be so attached to an object.

Eh, why not?

Cameras didn’t disappoint her.

Either way, mission accomplished. She sat back in her chair, ran a finger over her forehead. “You got lucky this time.” She glanced down at the camera. “Let’s get outta here.”

She stowed the camera, slung the bag over her shoulder and kicked the bottom drawer closed. A sudden grinding of one of the loading dock doors shattered the eerie quiet outside her office.

A drug delivery at eleven o’clock on a Friday night?

It could happen, but being the assistant distribution manager for Stennar Pharm, she’d have known about it and she didn’t remember seeing it on the day’s manifest. Unfortunately, in the week since her immediate supervisor had thrown himself off his eighteenth-floor balcony not everything had gone smoothly. Since Greg’s death, the VP of distribution, Ned Dillard, had been keeping abreast of the daily goings-on in the department. Even if she didn’t know what this delivery was, Ned probably did.

Nothing got by him.

She moved to the doorway. At the loading dock, the growl of the truck engine calmed to an idle. A door slammed.

“Twenty minutes to unload and we’re outta here,” Cliff Henderson yelled.

Cliff, one of the distribution team members, had obviously been expecting the delivery. The ride down here and the flat-out creepiness of being alone in a huge warehouse must have zapped her senses.

She stepped out of the office, closed the door behind her and made her way to the loading dock.

“Hi, Cliff.”

He spun toward her, his face stretched in that holy-crap look people get when surprised.

“Jillian. Wow.” He half laughed. “You scared me.”

“I’m sorry. I forgot my camera and had to come back for it.”

He glanced at the case. “You don’t want to leave that here.”

She gestured to the truck. “What’s this?”

“Delivery that was supposed to happen this morning. Truck broke down. Pain in the ass on a Friday night.”

A delivery that hadn’t arrived? She should have been made aware of that. Jillian glanced at the boxes neatly stacked inside the truck. “You’re going to unload this yourself?”

“Not the whole thing. I’ll be done fast.”

“Can I help you?”

He waved the suggestion away. “Get on with your weekend.”

“You’re sure?”

“I got this. No problem.”

She glanced back at the truck. “If you say so. Just leave the paperwork on my desk and I’ll take care of it on Monday.”

“Sure thing. Things have been nuts around here since Greg…”

Jillian stared straight ahead. “The poor man. I can’t imagine being in such pain that he thought jumping off a building would fix it. I feel horrible for his wife and son.”

Her own father would never win any parenting awards, but he’d never allowed his pain to drive him to suicide.

Cliff let out a long, streaming breath. “Let me walk you to your car.”

For a week, the employees had been avoiding the subject. Everyone walking around sort of dazed, knowing their coworkers were thinking about Greg, but refusing to talk about it. The unspoken sorrow lay heavy on all of them, but, like the others, Jillian supposed it was better to not think too hard about Greg and his demons. “I’d appreciate that.”

Cliff led her to the door and pushed it open. “Good thing the cleaning people don’t come in until Saturday. Depending on the crew, you might have lost that camera.”

“That’s what I was worried about. And I need the camera for a class I’m taking tomorrow.”

Another thing she’d pinched her pennies for—a one-day intensive with a world-renowned photographer. The class was only offered once per year and she’d been on the waiting list for four years.

“That sounds fun.”

“I’m hoping so.” They reached her car and Jillian set the camera bag on the floor behind the driver’s seat. She turned to Cliff. “Thanks for walking me out.”

“You bet. Be careful heading home.”

“I’ll lock my doors. Thanks.”

Even self-sufficient women couldn’t be too careful when it came to being alone at night.

Guest Reviewer Charity reviews Desperate Choices by Hildie McQueen

TITLE: Desperate Choices
SERIES #: A Protectors Novel
CHARACTERS: Rachel & Roderick
AUTHOR: Hildie McQueen
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/14/13

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
When an Immortal demon slayer saves Rachel Andrews from certain death, her life changes forever. An unbreakable bond with the handsome Protector, drags her into a world she never believed existed and has no desire to be part of.

The actions of one night drastically alter the course of his long existence. Torn between his feelings for Rachel and his life’s calling, Roderick Cronan comes face to face with the fact that he is losing both.

MY REVIEW:
I was asked to read book 2 of this series for someone, but after finding out that there were other books in the Protector Series I had to get them all and read them in order, I’m a little OCD like that 🙂

Unlike some, I started with this one (book 0.5) and not Book 1. I’m glad I did, because I felt that it set up the Protector world perfectly. From the very 1st paragraph I was happily sucked into this world.

Desperate Choices was a quick, very smooth read that left me wide eyed, mouth gaping and racing to my laptop to grab the next one to be sent to my kindle.

Rachel and Roderick are perfect together from the beginning, I love their instant chemistry. From a few reviews that I read from others who loved this novella I’ll see Rachel and Roderick later 😉 I had to make sure with an ending like that.

We are introduced to two other characters in this novella that I have a feeling we are going to see in the future (I haven’t read any of the other books at this point yet so I’m just guessing here), one of them is Roderick’s roommate Cyn, LOVE HIM, he made me giggle out load a few times and brought the humor to this short novella. The other is Julian, I can imagine some won’t like him cause you know he is the boss and has to be the bad guy sometimes, but I really liked him.

I’m going to keep this review short and to the point because I have the next installment and I’m itching to read it 🙂

All Around I am amazed that Hildie was able to entice me with so few pages into the world of the Protectors.

I give Desperate Choices 5 out of 5, never have I been so enticed by a series so easily and quickly and that’s a feat in itself. Give this short novella a read, I doubt you won’t be finding yourself rushing to grab the next one just as I did.

Happy Reading!!!!

Guest Reviewer Jaime reviews The Maid and The Queen by Nancy Goldstone

TITLE: The Maid and The Queen: The Secret History of Joan of Arc
AUTHOR: Nancy Goldstone
PUBLICATION DATE: 03/29/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N
BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The untold story of the extraordinary queen who championed Joan of Arc.

Politically astute, ambitious, and beautiful, Yolande of Aragon, queen of Sicily, was one of the most powerful women of the Middle Ages. Caught in the complex dynastic battle of the Hundred Years War, Yolande championed the dauphin’s cause against the forces of England and Burgundy, drawing on her savvy, her statecraft, and her intimate network of spies. But the enemy seemed invincible. Just as French hopes dimmed, an astonishingly courageous young woman named Joan of Arc arrived from the farthest recesses of the kingdom, claiming she carried a divine message-a message that would change the course of history and ultimately lead to the coronation of Charles VII and the triumph of France.

Now, on the six hundredth anniversary of the birth of Joan of Arc, this fascinating book explores the relationship between these two remarkable women, and deepens our understanding of this dramatic period in history. How did an illiterate peasant girl gain access to the future king of France, earn his trust, and ultimately lead his forces into battle? Was it only the hand of God that moved Joan of Arc-or was it also Yolande of Aragon?

REVIEW:

It’s completely obvious Goldstone is a genius when it comes to telling tales of predominant historic figures, and this book is no exception. She captures the essence of Joan of Arc and Yolande of Aragon to a tee. The author’s work is flawless, and this well-written biography almost teaches us readers reminiscent to a textbook explaining who and why they are significant hundreds of years later. It’s tough enough to highlight one heroine, but the addition of a second in this book is just an extra sweet bonus of knowledge and talent that adds to history buffs’ must-read list. It’s paced perfectly so we don’t get confused with the overload of information, and the several illustrations throughout aid our creative thought and eases us through the enigmatic world which we have never explored previously. Many may not know the importance or the impact Joan of Arc has bestowed upon the world, but whether it was a curse or a blessing in disguise, her story is told beautifully and many will agree, unforgettable.

LEGEND OF THE PANTERA

Hidden in the depths of the Louisiana bayous, the Pantera, have become little more than a legend to most humans. It’s rumored that in the ancient past twin sisters, born of magic, had created a sacred land and claimed it as their own. From that land was born creatures who were neither human or animal, but a mixture of the two. Faster and stronger than humans, they have hyper acute senses, and when surrounded by the magic of the Wildlands they’re capable of shifting into pumas. It was also whispered that they possess other gifts. Telepathy, witchcraft, immortality, and the ability to produce a musk that could enthrall mere mortals. Mothers warned young girls never to roam alone near the swamps, convinced that they would be snatched by the Pantera, while young men were trained to avoid hunting anywhere near the protected Wildlands. Not that the warnings were always successful. What girl didn’t dream of being seduced by a gorgeous, mysterious stranger? And what young man didn’t want to try his skill against the most lethal predators?

As the years passed, however, the sightings of the Pantera became so rare that the rumors faded to myths. Most believed the entire species had become extinct. Sadly they weren’t entirely mistaken…

Guest Reviewer Paula reviews The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

TITLE: The Indigo Spell
SERIES #: Bloodlines #3
CHARACTERS: Sydney & Marcus
AUTHOR: Richelle Mead
PUBLICATION DATE: 02/12/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch–a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood–or else she might be next.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, the Bloodlines series explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive—this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.

REVIEW:
I must start this review saying that I absolutely love Richelle Mead’s writing.

In this novel, the third of the series, Sydney sees herself between her forbidden attraction for Adrian, the need to find out the truth behind the Alchemists and the Warriors of Light connection without letting it transpire to her superiors, the allure of escaping her reality and live on the run with Marcus Finch, the struggle to learn magic, something that all her Alchemist teachings go against, to fight imminent witch danger, and, on top of everything else, she is the one in charge of keeping Jill’s royal identity secret from everyone from the outside and their little group away from problems.

One way of describing Sydney’s evolution throughout the series is picturing an egg, the egg shell being the Alchemist’s teachings that have been part of her life since she was a little girl, and in the same way that it protects her, it also restricts her, but as far as she knew, she was alright with it because that’s the world that she grew up in.

The slight cracking of the shell begun when she helps prove Rose’s innocence in the Vampire Academy series. It was something that went against the orders that she had from her superiors, and she almost got herself in deep trouble with the Alchemists over that. They should not meddle unless humans or the existence of vampires being revealed to humans was at risk.

She beings this series in a sort of probation, she will have to prove herself as a faithful and obedient young Alchemist or risk going to “re-education”, a mixture of prison with brain washing facility.

Throughout the first two books of the series, although the fear of going to re-education is there, the first deep cracks of that Alchemist shell that involves her start appearing and she starts to question the beliefs she was though since a she was a little girl.

In this book, the third of the series, that shell is finally cracked. The reasons of why she no longer feels connected with the Alchemist’s beliefs can be boiled down to four: love, magic, friendship and truth. Love for Adrian, the magic she holds within herself and will depend on to survive, the friendship that blossomed between her, the group that she is in charge of and a few friends at school, and the truth that she uncovered by allying herself with Marcus rogue Alchemists. While it’s true that the truth shall set you free, in Sydney’s case, in can also give her a ticket to a re-education facility and from now on she will have to be even more careful than ever when she speaks, especially in the presence of other Alchemists.

And while in the background of her life, something evil is lurking and she has to prepare for it and confront it, it becomes the perfect setting for her relationship with Adrian to grow stronger, because they both know that they can count on each other, no matter what.

Overall, I think that the way Richelle Meads connects the dots in the various plots within the book (and series) it’s amazing, because you don’t get a one track story, it’s not only about her blossoming love life, or her discovering magic or her going against the Alchemists (although they don’t know it). It’s about all that and more, because all those parts of her life combined bring up different sides of her personality, sides that even she didn’t knew she had in her. And there are also the supporting characters, like Angelique, a troublemaker but ferocious fighter when need be, or Julia and Kristin, Sydney’s school friends and all-things guy/relationship advisors.

I couldn’t believe when I read the last page, I racked the book to see if there was more or at least one little preview of the next book. No such luck. The good thing is that the next book is out in the fall and will be written in both Sydney’s and Adrian’s POV.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY:

My favorite scenes

The leading question here was what scene was easiest for me to write and what scene was hardest.  Believe it or not, that’s actually a difficult question for me to answer.  I don’t find any “scene” difficult.  What I find most challenging are what I call “transitional scenes.”  You know, those times in between “big scenes.”  I have to think long and hard about those because, most often, I have little idea of where the story is going.  Being a “pantser” (as my kind of author is affectionately termed in the Indie world) makes it impossible to look very far ahead, which, in turn, makes it challenging to write scenes that take the story from one big event to the next.  For me, the story is developing as I go, so I do lots of mulling during these periods.  I can get lost in them for hours sometimes, wondering what might come next.

Now if you’d asked what my FAVORITE scene to write was, I’d have to say the love scenes.  *grins*  I’m a true romantic and, for me, the culmination of all the tension and unspoken emotion is like fireworks—in my head, in my heart and, hopefully, on the page.  In fact, I love writing these scenes so much that I have to rein it in a bit to make sure I don’t get carried away.  That’s how much I love them.  Truthfully, though, I love to write any highly emotional scene, be it about love and victory or heartbreak and death. I know that sounds terrible, but in tragedy, the emotions are so gut-wrenching, they make the happy ending that much more satisfying.  And that makes all the angst and agony worthwhile, doesn’t it?

I guess in a nutshell, I’d have to say the easiest scenes for me to write are the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s the calm spaces in between that throw me for a loop.  I suppose that’s a good thing, though, because isn’t it the highs that we live for?  Isn’t it the lows that we can’t wait to read beyond, to see if there’s triumph to be had?  I like to think so. And as a writer, I’m the same way.  I wait with bated breath for the next wonderful thing or the next tragedy, all because I know that, in the end, there’s happiness.  And THAT is what I live for.

Guest Reviewer Erica reviews Three Sisters by Susan Mallery

TITLE: Three Sisters
SERIES #: Blackberry Island #2
CHARACTERS: Andi/Boston/Deanna
AUTHOR: Susan Mallery
PUBLICATION DATE: 02/26/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
After Andi Gordon is jilted at the altar, she makes the most impetuous decision of her life – buying one of the famed Three Sisters Queen Anne houses on Blackberry Island. Now the proud-ish owner of the ugly duckling of the trio, she plans to open her own pediatric office on the first floor, just as soon as her hunky contractor completes the work. Andi’s new future may be coming together, but the truth is she’s just as badly in need of a major renovation as her house.

When Deanna Phillips confronts her husband about a suspected affair, she opens up a Pandora’s Box of unhappiness. And he claims that she is the problem. The terrible thing is, he’s right. In her quest to be the perfect woman, she’s lost herself, and she’s in danger of losing her entire family if things don’t change.

Next door, artist Boston King thought she and her college sweetheart would be married forever. Their passion for one other has always seemed indestructible. But after tragedy tears them apart, she’s not so sure. Now it’s time for them to move forward, with or without one another.

Thrown together by fate and geography, and bound by the strongest of friendships, these three women will discover what they’re really made of: laughter, tears, love and all.

REVIEW:
Susan Mallery’s newest novel, “Three Sisters”, is the second in her newest series, Blackberry Island. It follows the first in the series “Barefoot Season”. This is about 3 women and their families who live in the 3 Queen Anne Victorian houses on the island. Andi buys the 3rd house, to turn the bottom part into a pediatric office, and she will live upstairs.

Next door is Deanna, a wife and mother of 5 daughters. She accuses her husband of having an affair, and he assures her that he is not cheating on her. She is obsessive-compulsive, she washes her hands so much, that she is embarrassed to shake Andi’s hand when she talks to her for the second time, and she hides it in her sleeve. The first time she meets Andi, she is rude. She feels that her daughters do not appreciate her, she always sees the daughters yelling that “Daddy is home”, but she never gets the same treatment. I did not like Deanna at the beginning of the book, but luckily she matures and changes throughout the novel. We learn about why Deanna acts the way she does, and why she washes her hands so much.

Finally, we have Boston, who married her high school sweetheart, but they do not have any children. Unfortunately, they had a son, who passed away at only 6 months old. Boston spends her days painting, and drawing pictures of her son, eating, sleeping, anything her beautiful baby did, or did not get to do, due to his short life. Boston’s husband spends his time away from home, trying to drown his sorrows in a bottle. At the end of the book, Susan gives us a lovely meeting between Boston and her husband where they talk about what happened, and eventually they help each other get through their grief.

Andi meets Wade, who will be her contractor. Wade is the Brother-in-Law of Boston. He will tear apart the first floor of her house, and turn it into a beautiful pediatric office. Andi also commissions Boston to paint a mural to make the kids feel more excited than scared to be at the doctor. Susan describes an amazing jungle scene, which I for one, really wanted to see in paint, besides what I painted in my head.

Andi also spends some time with a few of Deanna’s daughters. She invites them over for lemonade and cookies, and one day Boston visits, and spends that afternoon drawing the children, and their cat.

Deanna talks to Andi about her OCD, and Andi gives her the name of a psychiatrist, and convinces her to go for an appointment. Deanna does go for the appointment, and by the end of the book, she is a lot nicer than she was at the beginning. She also talks more to her daughters, and instead of yelling at them like she did in the beginning of the book, she listens to them and talks in a calm manner.

We also get to see Michelle and Carly from the first book, when Deanna goes to apply for a job at their bed-and-breakfast. We do not get to catch up with them; we are mainly with Deanna when she meets them for her interview.

This is just another amazing Susan Mallery novel, She writes amazing characters with sad, happy, and sometimes tragic back stories, but at the end of each novel, she gives them hope, love, and great friends. I for one cannot wait for the next Blackberry Island novel.

On the plus side, on susanmallery.com, she has a calendar on the left side of the page, which gives us some save-the-dates for some of her upcoming novels. Also visit blackberryisland.susanmallery.com, for a Blackberry Island map, and a visitor’s guide, and also recipes.

Also see foolsgold.ca.susanmallery.com, for her Fools Gold series, which at the end of July of this year, will have released 12 full length novels, and some e-novellas.

Guest Reviewer Hai-Yen reviews Hearts Of Darkness by Laura Kaye

TITLE: Hearts Of Darkness
CHARACTERS: Makenna & Caden
AUTHOR: Laura Kaye
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/21/11
ORDER LINKS: Amazon | B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Makenna James thinks her day can’t get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out.

To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

REVIEW:
I first discovered Laura Kaye’s work with “Hearts in Darkness” (HID). This story falls into the contemporary romance genre, which was a first for me. I fell completely and utterly in love with HID on so many levels.

For starters, the cover got my attention. I don’t want to sound shallow but I do love a great cover and this cover caught my attention (I mean, have you seen it?!). After reading the blurb, I was curious. What is so special about the story of two strangers stranded in an elevator? Well, when it is written by Laura Kaye, let’s just say it is insanely hot!

The story is compelling and, at times, heartbreaking. The main characters are likable. You cannot help but get attached to them and wish them well. I have never read a love scene that is so explicitly well described and emotionally-charged. I laughed, cried and groaned while reading HID. A truly heartfelt story. I highly recommend HID. You won’t be disappointed. Promise. Laura Kaye has been on my To-Read list ever since.

Guest Reviewer Misty reviews The Dark Lady by Maire Claremont

TITLE: The Dark Lady
SERIES #: Mad Passion #1
CHARACTERS: Eva & Ian
AUTHOR: Máire Claremont
PUBLICATION DATE: 01/16/13
ORDER LINKS: Amazon| B&N

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The Victorian era was full of majestic beauty and scandalous secrets—a time when corsets were the least of a woman’s restrictions, and men could kill or be killed in the name of honor…

Lord Ian Blake has returned from India a broken man. Years ago, he pledged to Lady Eva Carin—his childhood companion and first love—that he would bring her husband back alive. His failure haunts him. But even his jaded soul can’t anticipate the shocking sight of beautiful, independent Eva confined in a madhouse.

Locked in an asylum, forgotten by society, Eva is adrift in both body and mind. For Ian to break her free, they must cross a powerful enemy—and prove her sanity to England’s unforgiving aristocracy. But the biggest danger of all may come when the secrets of Eva’s tragic past are finally unlocked.

REVIEW:
A Beautifully Dark Delight
I have been anxiously awaiting Máire Claremont’s debut from the moment I first spied the cover. The lush art work led me to believe that the contents inside would certainly be even better. The Dark lady had me from page one and kept me entranced right through the final pages. The writing is solid. The Dark Lady’s hero and heroine are equally matched in strengths and tragedies. The story weaves its way through the dark side of Victorian England, a side which is often forgotten. Claremont draws readers into the dark recesses of an often cruel era where those who have power often abused such power. From a country side madhouse to the beautiful ballrooms of London this book takes readers on ride that so few historical romances do.
They had been friends since early childhood but destiny and duty fell in their paths. Lady Eva Carin has not only lost her husband but soon after suffers a much greater loss than that, the loss of her infant son in an accident of her own making. Her brother-in-law Thomas, the new Lord Carin sees fit to commit Eva to an asylum of which she has endured many cruelties including a regular dosing of laudanum and many pain filled beatings. Lord Ian Blake has returned from India haunted by the events that led to the former Lord’s death and dreads coming face to face with Eva, but he knows he owes her the truth about what really happened to her husband. Ian is stunned to learn that she’s been committed, but upon entering the halls of the asylum that she has been placed in, he becomes livid and enraged. The only thing that stops him from committing murder is the thought of never being able to see Eva again. This sets off a chain of events that puts them both in danger as they each try to overcome the torments that life has thrown at them.
I was drawn into the story from beginning and my heart went out to Eva and Ian. The story telling is lush and simply draws you into the period. There are many strong secondary characters that will make you want to come back for a second helping. Beautifully crafted, and has been written in a fashion that believable for its time period. For a novel that has an overall darkness to it, the light soon begins to filter in.
Easily a Five Star

Guest Reviewer Shayna reviews Crossing Lines by Alannah Lynne

TITLE:  Crossing Lines
SERIES #: Heat Wave #3

PUBLICATION DATE:  01/28/13

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
The world’s best-stocked toy drawer can only take a gal so far. Bored with her current assortment of vibrating, plastic pieces, Sam Wallace decides to add a new sex toy to her collection: Kevin Mazze. The sexy Italian is more than happy to help her live out her long-held sexual fantasies, and trusting him with her body is easy. Trusting him with her heart, however, is not… especially when he commits an unforgiveable sin.

Kevin Mazze is one of the good guys. He’s spent his life always doing the right things and making those around him happy. When he meets the woman of his dreams, at the worst possible time, he finds himself making bad choices in the name of good and crossing lines he never thought he would… while praying she never finds out.

REVIEW:
Let me just start off by saying I could not put this book down. I was so excited to hear that this was Kevin’s story. I wanted Kevin to have his Happily Ever After and Sam could not be more perfect for him in all ways possible. This was an emotional story for me. I laughed, I got angry, and definitely teared up a little. Thank you Alannah for a fabulous read. You never disappoint! If you haven’t started the Heat Wave Series, you are definitely missing out on something special.
