Blog Tour & Giveaway: Shadow of Asphodel by Karen Kincy

Today, I have Karen Kincy to promote her new book, Shadows of Asphodel, courtesy of CBB Book Promotions. This is an action-packed novel filled with mercenaries, necromancers and sword play.

Top Ten
by Karen Kincy

What makes me fall in love with a book? My top ten reasons a story makes me swoon:

1. Characters. If I meet a charming character the moment I open a book, I’m hooked. I also love vulnerable badasses. On the outside they look confident and tough, but on the inside they have flaws and fears that you only glimpse at first glance. I’m a sucker for sexy heroes, especially in romance, though I also love a heroine who’s awesome enough to take the lead in the story. There need to be more female characters who inspire admiration and adoration.

2. Romance. If I’m reading a romance novel, I want the relationship between the characters to drag me through the emotional wringer. Bonus points if a book can make me blush or cry, both of which are quite hard to do. I absolutely love watching characters fall for each other, particularly when it isn’t love or lust at first sight, and they have to navigate all that angst. For genres other than romance, I’ll admit to crossing my fingers for a romantic subplot.

3. Tension. It can be the breathless suspense that makes you race between scenes, or the kind of slow build that makes you bite your nails. Tension between characters who haven’t admitted their attraction, or tension as a sandstorm rolls in, or tension constructed out of hidden secrets. What can I say? I don’t like to be strung along in real life, but I’ll pay for an author to do it.

4. Prose. It can be ornate and lush, or stark and bold, but knowing I’m in the hands of a confident storyteller always makes me clutch my book a little closer. I have a special weakness for gorgeous descriptions. Right now I’m reading The Night Circus and the sensory metaphors alone make me weak at the knees.

5. Action. Confession: I love fight scenes with intricate choreographies, and fight scenes with swords, and fight scenes where things explode and the characters walk away without looking back. I don’t shy away from a certain quantity of gore, so long as it’s central to the story.

6. World. I’m such a research geek that I have a special place in my heart for historical stories, particularly historical fantasies. I want to know all the little details that make a world tick. I want to imagine that I could open a door and step right inside, and I wouldn’t want to leave.

7. Wit. As an author, I happen to think that humor is one of the hardest things to pull off in a story. When a book makes me laugh, I love it even more. Witty banter between characters is one of my favorite things to read.

8. Steam. A romance can be sweet or steamy and I’ll read it, but I do like it when an author takes the heat and turns it up to eleven. Sometimes, when I’m riding the bus, I’ll read steamy books on my Kindle and hope nobody looks over my shoulder!

9. Magic. I write paranormal and fantasy novels since that’s what I love to read. I have tried to write straight contemporary books before, but some magic always creeps back into the story. As a reader, I’ll go for anything from witches to werewolves.

10. Ending. What can make or break my undying devotion for a book? The ending. I think the best kind of endings are the bittersweet ones that make you sigh with satisfaction but also leave you with a little bit of angst. It helps if there’s a sequel, so I don’t have to angst too long.

What makes you fall in love with a book?

Shadows of Asphodel high res

When Ardis discovers a man bleeding to death on the battlefield, she knows she has to walk away. In her work as a mercenary for Austria-Hungary, Ardis has killed many men without hesitation. One more man shouldn’t matter, even if he manages to be a charming bastard while he stands dying in the snow.
But when he raises the dead to fight for him, she realizes she must save his life.
If a necromancer like Wendel dies, he will return as a monster—or so the rumors say. Ardis decides to play it safe and rescues him. What she doesn’t expect is Wendel falling to one knee and swearing fealty. Ardis never asked for the undying loyalty of a necromancer, but it’s too late now.
Ardis and Wendel forge an uneasy alliance underscored with sexual tension. Together, they confront rebels, assassins, and a conspiracy involving a military secret: robotically-enhanced soldiers for a world on the brink of war. But as Ardis starts to fall for Wendel, she realizes the scars from his past run more deeply than she ever imagined. Can Ardis stop Wendel before his thirst for revenge destroys him and everyone else around him?

Jennifer’s Review of Shadows of Asphodel

Review (4 Stars): One of the things that I loved about this book was the main character, Ardis.  She was a young woman on her own in a time where that was frowned upon by society and she could wield a sword better than her male counterparts.  She was tough, smart and deadly and killed men without thinking twice about the consequences.  That is what I loved about her and Shadows of Asphodel.  She never planned to get involved with Wendel, the necromancer, but together they just seemed to fit.  They had great chemistry together and very hot sex scenes but I wish they had just a little bit more sexual tension before they finally got together.

I thought this novel was action-packed and Ms. Kincy does a great job creating this alternate steampunk yet magical world for Ardis and Wendel.  Shadow of Asphodel was a fascinating read and I would love to see more of Ardis and Wendel in the future.

Sneaking Candy by Lisa Burstein

All I ever wanted was to make a name for myself as Candice Salinas, creative writing grad student at the University of Miami. Of course, secretly I already have made a name for myself: as Candy Sloane, self-published erotic romance writer. Though thrilled that my books are selling and I have actual fans, if anyone at UM found out, I could lose my scholarship…and the respect of my faculty advisor, grade-A-asshole Professor Dylan.

Enter James Walker, super-hot local barista and—surprise!—my student. Even though I know a relationship is totally off-limits, I can’t stop myself from sneaking around with James, taking a few cues from my own erotic writing…if you catch my drift. Candy’s showing her stripes for the first time in my real life, and I’ve never had so much fun. But when the sugar high fades, can my secrets stay under wraps?

Jennifer’s Review of Whips, Cuffs and Little Brown Boxes

Review (4 Stars): This was such a cute little mystery for me.  Lilly is a 40-year-old woman who is trying to finish her mystery novel while dating a police detective and has her family hounding her at every turn about when she is going to settle down and have a family.  She discovers that her aunt Fran has disappeared and no one has a clue where she went to in this small town.  Lilly decides to try to find clues on her aunt’s whereabouts and why she would just disappear without a word.  What Lilly finds is more than she bargained for leaving her with more questions as to what aunt Fran got herself involved in before she disappeared.

The thing that I liked the most about this book was the characters.  I liked Lilly because I could really relate to her situation as being a single woman who is just trying to make a living while your family keeps asking you when you are going to settle down.  She had family everywhere and three women that she considered her “mom.”  In a small town, everyone knows everyone else and that is what makes this book fun.  Especially the old neighbor who believes that he is Davy Crockett and is always on the lookout for enemies which includes her little dog, Lou.  The mystery was well-written and I liked how everything wrapped up nicely at the end.  Looking forward to reading more about these characters in future installments of the series.

Interview & Giveaway with Isabel Cooper

Books-n-Kisses is excited to welcome Isabel Cooper to the blog today .

Isabel CooperIsabel, can you please share with us a little about yourself

Isabel: I grew up as a faculty brat in a variety of boarding schools: first in Pennsylvania, then in southern California, and finally in Maine.  Now I live in Boston and take the subway everywhere, which means I get to read a lot. No kids, boyfriends, or pets: I shun responsibility.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Isabel:  At least since sixth grade.  The teacher read one of my essays aloud in class, everyone seemed entertained, and I thought that was pretty cool. Plus, I heard you could work in your bathrobe. I’m still hoping for that part one day.

Can you share with us your typical writing day.  Is there anything you have to have while writing?
Isabel: Other than a computer, not really! I try and do at least a thousand words a day when I’m on deadline, 500 when not. I actually do most of my writing during downtime at work. J Life with roommates has left me able to tune out most distractions.

Most challenging or rewarding part of writing?
Isabel:  The most rewarding moments are those when I’m really in the zone and words come easily—especially when dialogue is working, as that’s my favorite part. The most challenging is anything to do with physical details: sex, fighting, or geography. Lord, do I hate geography.

Can you please tell us about your latest book?Legend of the Highland Dragon Cover
Isabel:  She’s a late-Victorian secretary with ambitions beyond her East End roots! He’s a two-hundred-and-some-year-old shapeshifting Scottish dragon with a curse! They…fight crime? Kind of? They definitely fight one really awful guy.  And they make out a lot.

How did you come with the idea for this story?
Isabel:  My former editor, Leah Hultenschmidt, actually suggested dragons. I was all “Ooh, cool!” and started brainstorming, and settled on trying to do a version of “Beauty and the Beast” that made the Beast less of a jerk. (The instinct to do this is in like eighty percent of romance novelists, as far as I can tell—it’s like getting a tattoo in college. One can only hope to do it well, in both cases.)

Can you share with us your current work in progress?
Isabel:  I’m tackling the story of Stephen’s sister Judith, who’s being all kinds of weary-quasi-mortal-veteran out in Scotland, and the spy who loves her. Only he doesn’t love her yet: they’re in the stage where neither trusts the other and each is pretending to be way less badass than he or she is. As one does.

Who are some of your favorite authors?
Isabel:  Robin McKinley, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, Mercedes Lackey, Candace Camp,  and Georgette Heyer. This is a very abbreviated list. J

Do you feel that any of your favorite authors have inspired your writing style?
Isabel: I can only hope! I really love how both McKinley and King, each in their own very different ways, mix fantasy or horror and romance, and I expect I’ve tried to imitate that a little in my own way.

Open your book to a random page and tell us what’s happening.

Isabel:  I’m actually at the office as I’m writing this, so it’s more Google Docs Pointer Roulette, but: okay, so Stephen and Mina have just cast this spell to keep Bad Stuff out, only it’s triggered his transformation, and he’s all “RUN NOW” and starts Hulking out. She runs, because she’s a sensible girl. He starts angsting in a paragraph or two.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

Isabel: I’ve promised myself Doctor Sleep to read when I travel this December.  Otherwise, I tend to see what’s at the library when I go.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Isabel: Thank you very much for having me on here! I hope you enjoy the interview and Legend of the Highland Dragon.

Sixteen-year-old Brielle has grown up hearing tales of a beast that kills humans, leaving behind only a scattering of bones and limbs. Or so the village elders say. She thinks it’s just their way of keeping children in line, though it doesn’t explain her grisly premonitions of blood, claws, and severed heads. When Lord Kenrick, Knight of the Crowhurst Order, shows up asking questions about the legendary monster and Brielle finds a mangled body in the woods, she begins to wonder if the grim stories are true. Her attraction to the handsome knight grows as she spends time with him searching for clues to the creature’s existence, and she becomes even more
determined to help him discover the beast’s location.
But as her seventeenth birthday approaches, her nightmares worsen. If Brielle doesn’t figure out the connection between Kenrick, the monster, and visions of a ghostly woman in the woods soon, more people could die. Including those closest to her…

Brambles scratched my legs, snagging my skirt. Gnarled trees bent in gruesome forms, while thick shadows splayed out beneath them. A heavy gloom settled over the woodland as wisps of fog slithered like snakes against the ground. I shivered. Don’t think. I picked an animal trail to follow, stepping over dead branches and forest debris. Blood pounded in my ears and the hair on the back of my neck prickled. I twisted around to glance behind me.

Nothing there. Only the trees. Urgency gripped hold of me and I picked up my pace once more. As I scrambled through the thicket, an overwhelming scent of rotten meat made me gag. I covered my mouth with my hand and stopped running when a bright red piece of fabric caught my eye. With hesitant steps, I moved toward it.

“Oh God.” I stumbled. There, sticking out from beneath a barberry bush was a severed arm, its finger pointed at me in accusation. My breath came in gasps as I scanned the rest of the clearing. My foot nudged against something and I looked down in horror to find the head of Liam Gatekeeper staring up at me. I screamed, backing away as fast as I could. All around me were pieces of his body scattered like breadcrumbs. I shielded my eyes with my hands, until I bumped into something else.
With another scream, I whipped around only to find myself faced with an oak tree covered in dried blood and deep claw marks. My vision darkened and I prayed I wouldn’t faint, that I wouldn’t be stuck in the woods. Because somewhere out here, a monster lurked. If I didn’t believe it before, I did now. The beast was real.

An engrossing, complex, romantic fantasy perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore or Maggie Stiefvater, set in a wholly unique world.
Salome Montgomery fears winter—the cold, the snow, the ice, but most of all, the frozen pond she fell through as a child. Haunted by the voices and images of the strange beings that pulled her to safety, she hasn’t forgotten their warning to “stay away.” For eleven years, she has avoided the winter woods, the pond, and the darkness that lurks nearby. But when failing health takes her grandparents to Arizona, she is left in charge of maintaining their estate. This includes the “special gifts” that must be left at the back of the property.
Salome discovers she’s a key player in a world she’s tried for years to avoid. At the center of this world is the strange and beautiful Nevin, who she finds trespassing on her family’s property. The sky darkened with ominous storm clouds. Giant flakes fell onto my face, sticking to my eyelashes and cheeks. Snow blew unhindered across the yard into what looked like small tornadoes.

Oh God. It’s happening again. The frigid air. The creaking of the treetops beneath the wind. Even the way the snow blew across the yard. I only had one more feeder. Just needed to toss the seeds in then I could leave. Be safe.

The pond water rippled, while the trees bent beneath the strong gusts. Soon, everything became so white I couldn’t see the house. In the distance a strange tinkling sounded, like dozens of wind chimes.

What had the shrink told me to do?

Ten, nine, eight. Breathe. Seven, six, five. Shit!

Panic stole my thoughts. I backed away from the pond as the flurries swirled toward me. Chasing me.

Then, I bumped into something—something that felt quite human. A firm chest, arms, hands. Not something, someone. A shriek tumbled from my lips and I spun around to face my captor.

“It’s okay. I won’t hurt you,” a soft masculine voice said, pale hands clinging to my arms as he kept me from falling.

My gaze followed those long fingers, up black leather sleeves, to the most gorgeous face I’d ever seen. My breath caught in my throat. I’m gawking. But I couldn’t help it. His raven hair shot with strands of blue, his face pale and perfect, like an ice sculptor had chiseled it into existence. His eyes—oh God, his eyes. They were the palest blue I’d ever seen. Glacial. He had to be over six feet tall, muscles evident through the tight shirt he wore beneath an unzipped jacket.

His mouth turned up at the corners as if enjoying my scrutiny. A cocky grin that made my cheeks warm.
“You’re trespassing.” I tried to keep the tremble from my voice.
“This is private property, or can’t you read the signs?” Bravo, that’s right, scare him off with your bitchiness.

He chuckled. And it sounded like the low song of the chimes. “Doris doesn’t mind me coming around. In fact, I’ve met you before, Salome.”

My name on his lips made my knees go buttery. I groaned inwardly.

“You know my grandma?” I fidgeted with the bucket still in hand.

He gave a nod. “Yeah, I’ve known her for years. But I haven’t seen you since you were a child.”

Warning bells went off in my mind, but I pushed them aside. If he knew my grandma, then he must be okay.
“Funny, I don’t remember you at all.”

“Don’t you, Salome?” Strands of my hair blew about my face. He reached a hand out as if to touch them then stopped, dropping his arms back to his side.

“No. Grandma’s never mentioned you.”

He gave me another cocky grin. “Well then, maybe we should be reacquainted.”

“Or maybe not.” I snorted. “I’m not sure how you got on the property, Grandma keeps all the gates locked.”

He produced an antique-looking skeleton key. “She gave me this. Like I said, Doris has known me for a long time.”

“I’m sorry. I’m not trying to be a jerk or anything, it’s just my grandma never mentioned I’d have visitors.” In fact, I wondered why she didn’t ask this guy to watch her house instead of me.

The arrogance left his face and he stared at me. “Perhaps, we can try this again.” He held his hand out to me.

“I’m Nevin.”

Jennifer’s Review of Murderous Matrimony

Review (4.5 Stars): One thing that I love about this series is that you are able to get a glimpse of days gone by and spend time with these wonderful characters.  Jessie and Chase are finally tying the knot but they find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery two weeks before their nuptials.   This time, the murder happens in Jessie’s new Arts and Crafts museum and her assistant is the prime suspect.  Now Jessie must find the real killer while dealing with a mischievous blue ghost and a wedding day jitters.

I love this series because I connected with Jessie from the very first book.  She is fun, smart and always seems to find herself in the middle of these murder investigations.  I also love the other quirky characters of the Ren Faire because each of them add to the story and make this such a delightful series.  This is a series that shouldn’t be missed and I always love  being able to step back in time for just a little while.

A Late Thaw Blog Tour and Giveaway

A Late Thaw-blog tour bannerI have Ana Blaze here today to talk about her new release, A Late Thaw. This is a hot and steamy novella that I just couldn’t put down and I love the idea of Joe Manganiello as Cole. 🙂

1. Tell me about your new release.

A Late Thaw is a friends-to-lovers story set in a very small town in Vermont.

2. Where did you come up with the idea for this book?

I think I had the setting first.  I went to college in a small town in Vermont and it holds a special place in my heart.  I’m also particularly fond of stories about friends who finally admit their feelings and get their happy endings, so this little tale is very much a “me” kind of story.  I was also thinking a little bit about the tough road some guys have to plow, trying to be chivalrous but still respectful.  That’s a bit of a challenge for Cole.  He always means well, but he doesn’t always express himself well when it comes to the woman he loves.  So he thinks that if he can help her he should, and she thinks he’s a bit over-bearing.  I find that to be an interesting dynamic.  She’s sort of fiercely independent and he loves that about her but doesn’t know quite where that leaves him.

3. Do you have any actors in mind when you are writing these characters?

I basically pictured a young Joe Manganiello.  I think he has an almost universal appeal.  He’s handsome, but not too pretty and he looks like he could rescue people from a burning building but that he’d also stop and scoop up kittens on his way out.  That’s the ideal man, right? Just me? Oh.

As for an actress, I don’t think I really pictured one whilst writing, but I’d say Sarah Bolger has the right look.  Maybe if I give a description, readers can give recommendations in the comments?  What do you say? Kiley is thin and about average height, maybe a little taller.  She has pale skin, straight brown hair, grey-blue eyes and a modest chest.

4. What are you working on now?

I have two big projects in the works right now.  The first is a contemporary NA romance set in a small college in upstate NY (so not so far from the type of school I attended) and the second is a paranormal romance with vampires and a touch of suspense.  I love vampires.  I’m the reason they keep making more vampire television shows.

5. Do you have any other authors that you feel influence you and your writing?

I read a ton and I’d say that when you’re a writer most everything you read influences you at least a little, so why don’t I just list some of my favorite authors.  I love: Anne Rice, Nora Roberts, Kelley Armstrong, Rachel Caine, Patricia Briggs, Charlaine Harris, Jill Shalvis, Sophie Moss, Richelle Mead, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, D.D. Barant, Mary Janice Davidson and J.K. Rowling.

6. Favorite junk food? Or what food or drink do you absolutely have to have while writing?

Diet Coke.  I love Diet Coke.  When it’s cold, I like to sip tea (Earl Grey!) in my disappearing Tardis mug.

7. Any advice for aspiring writers?

Finish the story.  I think a lot of writers are perfectionists and it’s easy to get all caught up trying to write a perfect first draft and then never finish it.  That makes me sad, I think there are some great stories out there that are waiting to be told by writers who are holding themselves back.  Just write it.  The perfecting (which is never done) happens later.  You need a first draft to move forward.  So write a first draft and then find a couple of great beta readers.

Thank you so much for answering my questions.

Thank you so much for having me!

The town’s too small for Kiley St. Claire’s reappearance to be a surprise, still seeing her hits Cole Thomas like a punch to the gut. She ripped his heart apart when she turned to ice and ran away all those years ago.  Now that she’s back, Cole’s going to say his piece and move on.

Even if she does look damn good in that uniform.

Kiley St. Claire is back in the small town of Barrett, Vermont, for one reason and one reason only: to earn some cash so she can survive her final semester of grad school.  She’s not there for the sexy Christmas tree farmers.

Even the one who once held her heart.

Jennifer’s Review of A Late Thaw

Review (4.5 Stars): I fell in love with Cole right away after starting A Late ThawHe was sexy, strong and only had eyes for Kiley, when he could have any woman that he wanted. He and Kiley made a great couple, who once started out as childhood friends but grew apart because of a teenage misunderstanding.   They had great chemistry together and I loved how they both had feelings for one another but never really acted on them.

Ana Blaze has created a fun light-hearted romance that will immediately captivate you.  I love her style of writing and I connected with her characters right away.  A Late Thaw is a perfect little romance and I absolutely can’t wait to read more great stories from Ms. Blaze.

Interview & Awesome Giveaway with Julie Ann Walker

Welcome back to Books-n-Kisses Julie Ann.

JulieAnnWalkerFor those who missed your prior visits can you please share with us a little about yourself
Julie:  Hello! *waves* My name is Julie Ann Walker.  I write the bestselling Black Knights Inc. romantic suspense series.  I’m addicted to three things: coffee, handbags, and shoes.  I adore travelling and hope to visit 100 countries before I die – so far I’ve been to 43, which means I still have a lot of plane rides ahead of me.  LOL!  I’ve been married fifteen years to the love of my life.  And I ride my bicycle everyday when the weather is nice.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
Julie:  Well, I got my degree in mathematics, so I suppose the answer to this question in no.  😉  On the other hand, I’ve always written.  It’s just that I treated it more like a hobby because I figured the dream of actually becoming a published author was too big, unattainable for the likes of little ol’ me.  Imagine my surprise, then, when first a literary agent, and then a publisher actually wanted to print my books.  LOL!

Are you a plotter or a pantser or combo of both? And can you explain the difference?
Julie:  I’m a pantser all the way – meaning I write by the seat of my pants.  A plotter is someone who outlines their books beforehand, thinking through all the ins and outs, devising all the plot twists and character arcs.  Sometimes I wish I could do that.  It certainly seems more efficient.  But, alas, my method it to just sit down at the keyboard and go… letting the story take me where it will.  Yeehaw! *wink*

What is your most interesting writing quirk?
Julie:  I don’t know how interesting it is, but I’m obsessed with post-it notes.  If I have an idea about what should happen 20 pages further along in the book, I use a post-it note.  If something has occurred to me that should be added to a scene I’ve already written, I use a post-it note.  If I have an upcoming book reading or signing, I use a post-it note.  If I have a payment due for, say, a conference or something, I use a post-it note.  My office looks like total mayhem, but it’s actually quite organized.  Just DON’T TOUCH MY POST-ITS!  Or I might have to murder you… *gives the evil eye*

Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?Born Wild Cover
Julie:  I’d love to!  So, Born Wild is sort of the book BKI fans have been waiting for.  The hero and heroine, Wild Bill Reichert and Eve Edens, have been dancing around each other since the beginning of the series.  We know there’s history between them… deep, dark, delicious history.  And in this book we finally find out what all the hot fuss is about.  Plus, in standard BKI form, there’s a devious villain, some flying bullets, kick butt motorcycles, and, of course, smokin’ hot sexy times.  😉

How did you come with the idea for this story?
Julie:  Like most of my books, I pulled this one straight out of my… ahem… you know.  *shakes head*  I never know where exactly the story will take me until I’m actually finished with it.

Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
Julie:  Absolutely!  I’ve just started working on the seventh book in the series.  It’s hero is BKI’s crazy cool Latin lover, Carlos “Steady” Santos.  And the heroine is the President’s daughter, Abigail Thompson.  There’s a kidnapping, ransom demands, a race through Southeast Asia, and some sweet lovin’ that’s guaranteed to set the pages on fire.  I’m having a blast writing it!

Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?
Julie:  I would kill  to meet Suzanne Brockmann.  She is the reigning queen of romantic suspense, and she’s the entire reason I started writing in the genre.  If I ever get the opportunity to meet her, I’ll likely prostrate myself at her feet.  So if you see me on the floor of a hotel lobby, kissing some woman’s toes, you’ll know it’s Suz Brockmann standing before me.  *snicker*

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?
Julie:  Read, write, read, write, rinse, and repeat until you’ve got something that’s ready to be put out into the world!

Can you share with us something off your bucket list.
Julie:  I would love to live abroad in Ireland for a year.  It’s one of my most favorite spots on the planet.  The pubs, the Guinness, the soda bread, the fields of heather, the blarney… *sigh*  Heaven.

What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?
Julie:  My friend, Amanda Carlson, writes some of the best Urban Fantasy out there.  The third book in her series, Cold Blooded, debuted about a month ago, and I can’t wait to dig in!

What is one book everyone should read before they die?
Julie:  Gone With The Wind… without a doubt.  I’ve read it at least a dozen times.  And every time, I find something new and wonderful about the story.  Scarlett is such a difficult heroine.  She’s so complicated and easy to hate, yet she’s amazingly strong and resilient.  I love characters that are deeply three-dimensional.

What is your favorite time of year & why?
Julie:  Summer!  I’m outdoorsy.  And when I can’t go out and play, I get – as my husband so delicately puts it – cranky.   😉

Who is your Celebrity crush?  And what would you do if you ever meet them?
Julie:  Currently, I’m a bit enamored of Tom Hardy.  I mean, those lips. Hubba, hubba.  If I ever met him?  Well, I’ll probably try to steal a kiss.  Just a quick one.  Nothing to get me in trouble with Mr. Walker.  LOL!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Julie:  Just a giant cyber hug and my heartfelt thanks for having me back on Books-N-Kisses.  This is always such a treat!

 My Review (4 Stars):

Tiara Trouble was a very cute mystery set inside the fascinating world of pageants.  I was very surprised at how much preparation and work was actually involved in becoming a pageant contestant. Destinee was a fun character who was a past pageant contestant herself and now runs a school to coach future young ladies.  I liked her humor and her straight-forward attitude while dealing with the never-ending obstacles that happened over the course of this story.  I also liked the supporting cast of characters involved in Destinee’s life that helped to make this an enjoyable read with a mystery that will keep you guessing.

The Evolution of Wicked Thing

by Angeline Kace

I’ve always found it fascinating when authors share the journey a book took to get to where it is when I read it, so I thought it’d be fun to share with you a lot of the ways Wicked Thing changed from beginning to end.

I got the idea for Wicked Thing while sitting in my auditing class one morning (I majored in accounting). I wrote long hand and wrote out the whole story, from their first time together (wink-wink) to the point their love story is resolved. When I was writing like a madwoman in class, I gave the characters names that felt were right for then at the time without much thought. Dallas was originally called Luke, and Carmyn was originally called Krista. Denton’s storyline didn’t come up until later, so Denton was always his name.

I originally called the book Don’t Speak after a line that is said in a crucial scene by one of the characters and then repeated by the other one later on in the story at another crucial moment. I called the book Don’t Speak for probably about 9 months. The DropBox folder on my computer where I have all the Wicked Thing files is still labeled as Don’t Speak. I ended up retitling the book when I found the song Wicked Game by Phillip Phillips. This song became the theme song for this book. It was the one song that I listened to that fit the tone and story with what I had going for the book perfectly. I couldn’t call the book Wicked Game because there are already so many books by that name. Plus, my favorite line in the song is, “What a wicked thing to do, to make me dream of you.” I knew from the beginning that it would be the guy who would recognize his feelings first and that the girl would be the one afraid to admit or allow herself to feel anything for him. So this song was perfect.

Another thing that changed multiple times was the cover image. I was set on a cover that I absolutely loved. But then a well-known author used that image on her book as it’s a stock image and anyone can purchase the rights for it, so I changed it. I finally found another imaged that I loved, but then another author published a book with the image as the cover and it actually became a bestseller, so it was back to the beginning. After that, I had a really hard time finding an image I liked enough as these original 2 to make it my cover. I went through numerous versions until I finally found the image of the cover as it is now and looooved it. I just didn’t know how to make it pop. That was when my designer, Emily Tippits, did her magic to make it how it is today.

   WickedThing

Carmyn Rafferty witnessed the aftermath of her mother’s affair. She learned at a young age not to trust anyone. Especially not your spouse. So she’s planned. She’s planned every detail of her life: who her husband will be, what their careers will be, what their lives will be like. All to avoid the pain of infidelity.

Dallas Brown lives a life all his own. He doesn’t do relationships, he doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him, and he doesn’t live up to anyone’s expectations but his own.

When Carmyn’s fiancé cheats on her, it sends her into a whirlwind of one-night stands with the most infamous player on campus. She can’t seem to stay away from this tough guy and his dangerous motorcycle. Everything about him is the complete opposite of who she’d planned to fall in love with: tattoos, dark stubble along his jawline, and hair that brushes his shoulders.

As Dallas and Carmyn begin to fall deeper and deeper into each other, they learn that love can truly be a wicked, wicked thing.
