Interview & Giveaway with Melinda Leigh

Books-n-Kisses is super excited to have Melinda Leigh on the blog again to talk about your newest Romance Suspense novel She Can Hide.

Melinda Leigh PicMelinda, for those who don’t know you can you please tell us a little about yourself

ML: Hi everyone! I’m the author of bestselling romantic thrillers, including SHE CAN RUN, my debut International Thriller Award nominated book, and my latest release, SHE CAN HIDE. I’m also a mom, a wife, a martial artist, and a dog person.  I have a fondness for rescue animals, British comedy, and ice cream.

BnK: Melinda, have you always wanted to be an author?

ML: Like all the best things in my life, I became a writer by accident. When my kids were small, I was reading 3-4 books a week because it was the only activity that didn’t wake them up from their afternoon naps. One day my husband suggested I try writing a book instead of reading one. I liked the idea. At first writing was just a hobby. It wasn’t for several more years that I’d try to write as a serious career, but I was hooked.

BnK:  Can you tell us a little about She Can Hide?

ML:  SHE CAN HIDE is the 4th book in the She Can Series (Don’t worry. They’re all stand-alone reads. The connections between the books she can hideare slim.) The story is all about trust. Can a woman who’s already been betrayed learn to trust again, even if her life depends on it?

BnK:  What is next in the She Can…. series?  I heard a rumor of a novella?

ML:  I have a short story, HE CAN FALL, releasing March 26.  It’s a quick, fast read about a romantic weekend gone horribly wrong.  I’m considering another book in the series. I don’t feel like I’m through with the characters in Westbury, Pennsylvania just yet.

BnK:  I know you write another Romance Suspense series The Midnight Series.  What is it about the Romance Suspense genre that you love so much?

ML:  Romantic suspense combines my two favorite genres, thrillers and romance. RS is the best of both worlds, a fast-paced exciting thriller with a happily-ever-after (a must for me!).

BnK:  Do you ever see yourself writing any other genres?

ML:  Sure, why not? Who knows what the future holds? I love to tell stories.  I’m very happy writing RS right now, but I might want to try something else someday.

BnK:  I think I suggest not too long ago that you and Kendra Elliot should team up to write a book.  How is that project going? 😉

ML:  Shhhh. It’s all a big secret. J

BnK:  What is up next for you?

ML:  Midnight Betrayal is scheduled to release in September, and I’m currently working on a new project, which might turn out to be the start of a new series.  I haven’t decided yet. New projects are so much fun. The possibilities are endless.

BnK:  Melinda, it is always a pleasure to have you on the blog!!  Is there anything else you would like the masses to know before we end?

ML:  I’d love to hear from your readers.  Do you love romantic suspense? What is it about the genre that thrills you?  For any of you who have read the She Can books, is there a particular character you’d love to see her his/her own story?

Once again, it’s been a huge thrill to be here at Books-n-Kisses.  Thank you so much for hosting me today.

BnK:  You are so very welcome!  We always love having you on the blog 🙂

Guest blogger Elizabeth Michels talks about kisses and her newest release + a giveaway

I’m so excited to be here on Books-n-Kisses today to celebrate the release of the second book in the Tricks of the Ton series, Desperately Seeking Suzanna! And, what better juicy tidbits of this story to share with you on this fabulous blog than the first kiss scene between Holden and Sue.  Technically, the first kiss in this story occurs on page 34 when Holden and Suzanna have an unexpected evening together at a masquerade ball…after she accidentally kicks him in the nose.  But, when she disappears later that night, he spends the London season searching for her, only to find simple, girl-next-door, Sue Green, standing in his path.

Finally, on page 191, Holden realizes not only that Suzanna was a myth, but he has developed a fondness for the very real lady at his side on the bench in the garden…

She wasn’t sure at what point in his story she’d slid her hand down his arm to wrap her hand around his, but she glanced down to find their fingers entwined now.  She should move. She should remove her hand from his grasp.  Instead she squeezed his fingers and laid her other hand on his forearm, attempting to rub the tension away.

With his story came understanding.  A few of the missing pieces that made him whole snapped together in her mind.  Not all of them, but enough for now.  “Your father can’t honestly hold you responsible for such a thing.”

“I can’t believe I told you any of this.  What is it about you?”  He glanced down at their joined hands, pulling away as if burned.  Flexing his fingers for a moment, his gaze returned to her face with an intensity she hadn’t seen since they’d met on the stairs that night.

“Holden.” Her mouth went dry and she licked her lips.  “This is why you try as you do to play the disreputable rake.”

“Might we return to the subject of wiggling toes?”  His breathing seemed harsh as he looked at her.

“You wish to confirm your father’s presumptions about you.  You try to sink to his expectations.  I can’t say I blame you.  I suppose…”

Unexpected warmth flooded her senses as he reached up to frame her face with his hands, pulling her closer.  His kiss was harsh, punishing, but with a desperation she matched.  She heard a startled whimper escape her throat as his lips moved over hers.  Her hands fluttered in the air for a moment before landing on his chest.  He pulled back, watching her.  There was an awareness in his eyes that she didn’t quite trust, as if he remembered something he’d forgotten long ago.

Her lips parted in question, yet she had too many thoughts to ask.  He’d released her lips but his hands held her head still.  His thumbs brushed against the wisps of fallen hair at her temples.

Blinking up into dark green eyes and lips she wanted back on hers, she tugged on his lapels until his mouth met hers once more.  He chuckled, the rough sound vibrating through her, only to be soothed by the softness of his mouth.  His tongue traced the lines of her lips until she opened to him, allowing him in.  Time must have passed but she was unaware of anything beyond his lips on hers.

His hands slid to the back of her neck as he tasted her, his warm skin heating hers more than a thousand suns.  His lips slashed over hers, pulling her deepest desires from her, then delving for more.  Exposed, in need, she bit at his bottom lip, dragging him into the spiral of longing with her.  As if in a battle where neither side would surrender, she matched every movement he made.  She’d learned.  Whether he knew it or not, he’d been her teacher.  Her hands were inside his coat now, splayed on his chest and slipping further around him with every passing second.

                Nearness.  That’s what she needed.

His body pressed close to hers.  His hand moved down her neck, sliding down her back to rest on her hip.  He pulled away with a lazy smile, his eyes darting across the garden.  “Where’s a bedchamber when you need one?”

                “Holden, we shouldn’t.”

“Yes, actually I believe we should.” He pulled her in for one more kiss, leaving her flustered, confused, and giddy.

She touched her fingers to her lips as he pulled away.  He’d kissed her.  Not Suzanna, her! Sue Green!

“For someone who hasn’t danced a quadrille before, you certainly are experienced,” he mused.

“You.  Only you,” she whispered.  Had she spoken aloud or only in her mind?

How do I go about writing a first kiss?  There are 3 steps that lead to the creation of a scene like this one: longing, atmosphere and wine.

  1. Longing- The characters have to earn that first kiss by surviving far too many pages of heartache.  Readers have to want these two crazy characters to get together, and to cheer for it when it finally happens.  Also, the characters have to finally reach that turning point in their relationship.  This was a challenge in Desperately Seeking Suzanna because Holden had to have time to befriend Sue and then choose her over the image of Suzanna.  And for a disreputable rake, he doesn’t move very fast. *grins*
  2. Atmosphere- The couple must be alone with no prying eyes, preferably, in a location with a romantic atmosphere.  This isn’t easy in Regency England when chaperones were required and matronly eyes were always watching.
  3. Wine- This is the point when the characters have suffered, the setting is perfect, the couple is ready to turn that corner in their relationship, and I just need to pour a glass of wine, close the door to my office, and write it.

Thank you for hosting me on Books-n-Kisses today! I hope you enjoy Desperately Seeking Suzanna.  What’s your favorite setting for a first kiss scene?

Her Cinderella Moment…

Sue Green just wanted one night to be the pretty one. But a few glasses of champagne and one wild disguise later, she’s in some serious trouble. Who knew the devastatingly handsome face of Lord Holden Ellis would get in the way of her foot? And how exactly did all that high-kick dancing start in the first place? At least she blamed it on her new persona—Suzanna—so Society’s most eligible bachelor will never find out the truth.

All Holden wants is the truth. Who was that vixen who seduced him so thoroughly, then disappeared? The only one who seems to have any answers about Suzanna is Miss Sue Green. She’s promised to help him find his mystery woman, but she’s not being all that helpful. And the more time Holden spends with Sue—witty, pretty, and disarmingly honest—the more he realizes he may have found exactly what he’s been looking for all along…

Jennifer’s Review of Hot Rock

Review (3.5 Stars):  One of the things that I liked about this unique time travel story was its main character, Megan.  She has come all the way to England to attend the Glastonbury music festival to fulfill a dream and finish her thesis about rock music.  Even though her professional career is in turmoil due to the actions of previous boyfriend, she is determined to fight and enjoy what little time she has at the festival.  I liked her strength and determination in this book and she wasn’t going to let anything get her down.

When she meets David, the next door neighbor, it is like a dream come true because he looks exactly like her rock idol from the seventies.  The more time she spends with him, she can’t shake the feeling that everything isn’t what it seems and David sounds too much like her favorite singer.  What Megan doesn’t know is that “David” is from the past and has found an interesting way to visit the future on the property where she is staying for the festival.  I had a hard time connecting to Davy because he was a jerk to Megan for a good half of the book.  He may have been a rock god but I just couldn’t see them as a great couple.  I liked this well-written story even though I didn’t fall in love with Davy like Megan did and I’m interested in reading more stories from this author.

Jennifer’s Review of Midsummer Sweetheart

Review (5 Stars): This was a great story for me.  Katrin was trying to get away from an abusive relationship when the opportunity to become a nurse in Skidoo Bay opened up for her.  To get to this rural town several hours away, Katrin agrees to accept a ride with Erik Lindstrom, who just happens to be a friend of the family.  He is on his way to a new job in law enforcement and is surprised when he meets Katrin for the first time.  She isn’t at all what he expected and they are both caught off guard by the physical chemistry that they have with one another.  Katrin will need someone to look out for her because her past relationship isn’t quite ready to let go of her yet.

Ms. Regnery is a new author for me but she is definitely one to watch.  Katrin and Erik’s story was very romantic and I loved that they seemed to bring out the best in each other.  Katrin had been through so much already with her abusive ex-boyfriend and I liked that she tried so hard to stay strong and fight for her independence.  She was determined to make a fresh start in this new town and she never planned on caring about Erik.  I believe that people come into your life for a reason and Erik was definitely someone that she needed by her side.

Erik was definitely a strong alpha male who would do anything to protect Katrin and you could see that whenever they were together.  He originally had the attitude that he would keep things casual and wouldn’t let anyone get to him until he met Katrin.  He wanted to experience love but was afraid to give his heart away and I’m glad that Katrin was the one woman who could show him what it meant to be truly loved by someone.  Midsummer Sweetheart was a very touching romance and I would love to read more from Ms. Regnery.

HARD AS YOU CAN is your second book in the “Hard Ink” series (after USA Today bestseller, HARD AS IT GETS). What can readers look forward to?

Readers can look forward to tons of sexy alpha male goodness, awesome bromance between the Hard Ink men, more antics from the Hard Ink puppy, and another great love story between Shane and Crystal. But readers should also be ready for a book that is darker, more intense, and more emotional. This book pushed me to emotional places that were tough as a writer, and might be tough for readers, too. But I think that just makes the payoff at the end so much sweeter!

Describe Shane and Crystal. What are their best traits? What are their weaknesses?

Shane and Crystal are such an amazing couple to me. They’re each exactly what the other needs. Shane’s best traits are his protectiveness, his fundamental kindness, and his soul-deep loyalty (his southern accent and humor are also right up there!). His biggest weakness for sure is a tragedy from the past for which he blames himself—and it’s something that continues to motivate him in Hard As You Can. Crystal’s best traits are her courage, protectiveness, and selflessness—she’s willing to do anything to keep her younger sister safe. Her biggest weakness is also that selflessness, because the sacrifices she’s required to make are getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

If you could describe your book in a 140 character tweet, what would it be?

When a woman in trouble assists an ex-soldier’s covert mission to regain his team’s stolen honor, he finds a new mission to save her, too

What are you most excited about with this second book release?

I’m really excited to take readers deeper into these awesome characters and into the mystery behind the Hard Ink team’s ambush and discharge!

What books are you reading right now?

I’m almost done with Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander (yes, I’m very late to the party but OMG JAMIE FRASER!!!). And I’ve recently devoured and loved Juliana Stone’s Offsides and Shelly Thacker’s time-travel historical romance, Forever His.

What can fans of your “Hard Ink” series look forward to next?

There will be two more Hard Ink books in 2014!

Hard to Hold on To – August 2014

Hard to Come By – November 2014

Five dishonored soldiers.

Former Special Forces.

One last mission.

These are the men of Hard Ink.

Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he’s shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister’s sake, Crystal can’t get too close. Until her job and Shane’s mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.

Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn’t want him to uncover. Too bad. He’s exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can–and never let go.

Excerpt:

It’s release day! And I’m thrilled to share Hard As You Can, the second book in the Hard Ink series, with all of you here today! Hard As You Can follows the surviving members of a disgraced Army Special Forces team as they fight to regain their stolen honor, and finds their investigation crossing paths with a waitress willing to do whatever it takes to stay alive and protect her younger sister. For Shane McCallan, saving Crystal Dean is a mission he refuses to turn down.

Today, I’m excited to share Shane and Crystal’s first kiss! Don’t you love first kiss scenes? Gah! I so do. *grins* Here we go:

“Tell me not to,” Shane said, his voice a raw scrape.

“I can’t,” Crystal whispered in a shaky voice. “I don’t want to.”

Shane’s body took over then, all urgent need and basic instinct. The rest of the world be damned. He pulled her in and kissed her, his lips devouring, his tongue exploring deep. Nothing held back. Nothing denied. Not even as her lips reawakened the sting from the cut on his lip. Totally worth it.

Crystal’s arms came up around him. She trembled against him, and Shane wasn’t sure if it was caused by adrenaline or fear. Unable to tolerate the thought that she might feel forced, he eased off.

She moaned and held him tighter, like his retreat had made something snap within her. Their kisses deepened, and her body moved against his, sinuously, maddeningly, desperately.

They tasted one another again and again, giving in to the heat that had sparked between them from the moment Crystal had collided with him at Confessions. Little nips and bites of lips and teeth warred with long, sensual strokes of tongue that stole his breath and made him instantly hard. The sting in his lip, the throb of his GSW, the aches from Nick’s asskicking, every bit of it faded away—no, her touch made it all go away.

The few times they’d spoken, Crystal had most often been guarded, tentative, fearful. Just as she’d been when he first kissed her. But, now, she was revealing a passionate woman who could be fearless, giving and receiving openly and without hesitation. Christ, the thought that this fierceness was the real Crystal slayed him because it meant she was burying and denying her true self, not because she wanted to, but because she had to.

No, because someone forced her to.

The thought reminded him of the bruises on her arm. Shane had known this woman for three days, and twice in that time she’d been hurt by another man. And both as a consequence for things Shane had done.

A crack of thunder echoed from the heavens, making Crystal jump and gasp into his mouth.

“I’ve got you,” he rasped around a kiss.

Part of him wanted to say more, to tell her he had her and he’d keep her safe. But he couldn’t make himself give up her heat, her sweetness, her obvious hunger—for him.

So he made her a silent promise instead.

Never again, Crystal. He’ll never hurt you again. Not on my watch.

Because Shane McCallan had made a mistake like that once. And, as bad as his sister’s disappearance had been, something’s happening to Crystal would actually be worse because Shane knew it was coming. The one break he’d ever given himself over Molly was that he’d had no way to know she’d be abducted. Didn’t excuse the role he played in allowing it to happen, but he couldn’t have known. But with Crystal, while he might not know when or how this Bruno asshole would strike out to do the ultimate damage, it was all but a done deal at this point. Always was with guys like him. And Shane would go to the grave before he let it happen, before he failed another female for whom he cared.

Because he did care. Made no damn sense given how long he’d known her. And the timing was beyond piss-poor. But there it was all the same.

So that’s Shane and Crystal starting to give in to what they feel for one another – I hope you enjoyed! Did you have a favorite line? Thanks for reading!

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Limoncello Yellow by Traci Andrighetti

large banner 640(1)I recently had the opportunity to read this amazing mystery and I am honored to have Traci here with us today to talk about her fun character, Franki Amato.  Take it away, Traci.

Ten Things You Should Know about Limoncello Yellow’s Franki Amato

Instead of the usual “how-I-came-up-with-the-idea-for-my-book” post, I thought I’d share some fun facts from my character development sheet for Francesca “Franki” Amato.  Franki is the tough-talking, 29-year-old private investigator protagonist of my debut novel, Limoncello Yellow.

  1. Franki looks like the 1960’s Italian movie actress Claudia Cardinale, but she wears the signature cat-eyeliner of Sophia Loren.
  2. She is 5’10”, 170 pounds and has an oversized butt. She can’t decide whether Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” is her least or most favorite song.
  3. Her motto is, “When life gives you lemons, make Limoncello.” But in extreme cases, she revises it to, ” When life gives you lemons, skip the ‘making Limoncello’ part and just go straight to drinking it.”
  4. Thanks to her meddlesome Sicilian nonna, Franki suffers from Catholic guilt even though she’s not a practicing Catholic and precisely because she’s not a practicing Catholic.
  5. She loves Murder She Wrote, trashy reality shows featuring New Jersey, and any and all variations of Say Yes to the Dress.
  6. Although she’s OCD about the outward appearance of her apartment, inside her cabinets, closets and drawers total chaos reigns.
  7. She has a passion for food, especially Nutella straight from the jar.  She rationalizes that the ridiculously caloric chocolate hazelnut spread is basically just the Italian version of chocolate pudding.
  8. When she’s at work at Private Chicks, Inc., Franki often spontaneously worries that she has forgotten to shave the hair that grows on her big toes.
  9. She uses profanity–but mostly in Italian–so that it doesn’t seem as offensive to readers.  And because it just plain sounds cool.
  10. Her one intense dislike: mimes.  She simply can’t understand why anyone would want to paint himself (or herself) white or monochrome and then pretend to do things like juggle or cry.

Any questions? If so, send them to me at traci@traciandrighetti.com. Franki doesn’t like talking about herself, and she can be kind of confrontational, especially if you ask her about her love life.

About the Author:

Traci Andrighetti-11bTraci Andrighetti is the author of the Franki Amato mystery series. In her previous life, she was an award-winning literary translator and a Lecturer of Italian at the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a PhD in Applied Linguistics. But then she got wise and ditched that academic stuff for a life of crime–writing, that is.

If she’s not hard at work on her next novel, Traci is probably watching her favorite Italian soap opera, eating Tex Mex or sampling fruity cocktails, and maybe all at the same time. She lives in Austin with her husband, young son (who desperately wants to be in one of her books) and three treat-addicted dogs.

Jennifer’s Review of Limoncello Yellow

Review (4.5 Stars): I absolutely loved this mystery and I know that you will fall in love with Franki as well.  She was sweet, spunky and fun and I couldn’t get enough of her personality.  I loved that this story takes place in New Orleans and I felt as though I was right there with Franki while she explored her new surroundings. Makes me want to go visit New Orleans immediately to spend time visiting the French Quarter and the fabulous restaurants.  Ms. Andrighetti has created a great character and a delightful new series that will have you laughing out loud.  Can’t wait to read more of these wonderful mysteries in the future.

Jennifer’s Review of Butterman (Time) Travel, Inc.

Review (4 Stars): This was a very interesting book for me and I loved the idea that in the future, time travel is readily available.  It was no surprise that it is being federally mandated like everything else and we find that Butterman Travel is currently in the middle of a government audit.  I liked Bianca because she was very smart and seemed much older than her eighteen years.  She wasn’t impressed when Tristan Helms walked into Butterman Travel but thought it was a great opportunity to finally get her time-craft license.  When things started going wrong on their journey, I loved how she was able to think quick on her feet and get them out of trouble.

Tristan seemed to be the typical guy who had too much money and was used to people treating him a certain way because he was a celebrity.  He originally expected Bianca to be one of his many fans and seemed to be surprised when she didn’t really care about him or his music.  I liked watching their personalities clash at times during their journey and I liked how Tristan seemed to become a more likeable character over the course of the book.  I definitely enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

Interview & Excerpt of Love Bats Last by Pamela Aares

Pamela Aares - Love Bats Last Banner

1.Can you please share with us a little about yourself:

I write contemporary and historic romance. I live in the coastal wine country just north of San Francisco with my husband and two rascal cats. Most of my life I lived in cities so the organic garden (feels like a small farm on most days) and the country life is still very new to me.

2. Have you always wanted to be an author?

I’m lucky to have had a family that loves stories. My great-great uncle James was a famous American poet and the love of language and storytelling stayed in the family. I wrote my first play in grade school and fell into the power of story. I went on to write and produce documentaries for PBS and National Public Radio. I also wrote grants and ran national and international campaigns to improve the lives of wild animal and their habitats—story is at the heart of any good grant proposal and it’s the stories of the animals and their lives that grabs people’s hearts and creates change for the better. I moved away from writing documentaries and started writing romance in 2004. In some ways romance picked me—I’m convinced that love powers everything in the universe!

3. What is your most interesting writing quirk?

I love heroes and heroines that walk off with the story and that challenge each other so strongly that by the end of the book nothing can pull them apart. As far as personal, writing craft quirks? I make story maps. My walls look like something out of the film “A Beautiful Mind—papers taped to the walls, yellow and pink and green stickies all over the room. Sometimes guests walk in and their jaws drop. They’d never imagined the craft that lives behind a good book.

4. Can you please tell us about your latest book(s)?

Love Bats Last is the first book of my series,The Heart of the Game. The series features hot, alpha-male All-Stars—athletes at the top of their game—and the strong, unique and feisty women who challenge them and whom they come to love. The women in the series have amazing careers. Jackie Brandon, the heroine of Love Bats Last, is an internationally recognized marine mammal veterinarian (but what the hero doesn’t know is that she’s also the daughter of an English earl).

5. How did you come with the idea for this story?

I had just drafted the sequel to Jane Austen and the Archangel and had a fine sense of accomplishment! Readers had been asking for the story of Gabriel, Archangel Michael’s bad boy accomplice. But as sometimes happens, Alex Tavonesi, the hero of Love Bats Last, showed up as my husband and I drove back to San Francisco from LA. By the time we arrived home, Alex and his wealthy, quirky cousins and his hot All-Star teammates were clamoring for stories of their own.

6. Can you share with us your current work(s) in progress?
Thrown by Love, it’s the second book in the Heart of the Game series. Here’s a synopsis:

Ace pitcher Scotty Donovan has been traded from his longtime team—and hates it. But to his surprise, he now finds himself in the sweetest game of his life: winning the heart of smart, sexy physics professor Chloe McNalley. Chloe loves teaching, but she’s never fit into academia. When she falls for Scotty, she discovers his arms and heart are where she belongs. They share a passion for the game, a fascination for the mysteries of the universe and an increasing love for one another. Then Chloe inherits Scotty’s new team. As player and team owner, they shouldn’t be dating. They try to hide their passion, until a blackmailer threatens them personally and professionally. Exposure could be the end of everything–Scotty’s career, Chloe’s team ownership, and their new love—unless they find a way to transcend the taboo standing between them.

7. Who is the one author that you would love to meet someday and why?

I’m lucky, I got to meet and spend some time with Nora Roberts. She’s given me some of the best advice ever. I’d like to meet Catherine Coulter—we’ve traded e-mails but I’ve yet to meet her. Her Midsummer Magic was the first romance I ever read (if you don’t count Jane Austen—if I could time travel, I’d love to meet Jane!).

8. What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Just do it. As Nora says, you can’t edit a blank page. And join a writing group, they help immensely. But mainly, write!

9. Can you share with us something off your bucket list.

Someday my husband and I would like to travel to Africa and see the animals in the wild. It’s just a dream for now.

10. What is in your To Read Pile that you are dying to start or upcoming release you can’t wait for?

I’m reading seven novels for the Romance Writer’s of America RITA awards. So I can’t say what they are, but there are good books headed the way of readers, I can say that!

11. Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks for having me. This is such a great time to be a writer—the rich conversation and flow between readers and writers is better than ever. I am always so touched when I hear that someone loved one of my stories, it means so much.

pamela aaresA little about the Pamela:

Pamela is an author of contemporary and historical romance novels. Her first book, Jane Austen and the Archangel (Angels Come to Earth, #1) was released in 2012. Midnight Becomes You, (Angels Come to Earth, #2) will release in 2014, along with three more books in the Heart of the Game series, all releasing in 2014.

Before becoming a romance author, Pamela Aares produced and wrote award-winning films and radio shows including Your Water, Your Life featuring actress Susan Sarandon and the NPR series New Voices. After producing The Powers of the Universe and The Earth’s Imagination, she knew without a doubt that romance lives at the heart of the universe and powers the greatest stories of all.

Pamela holds a Master’s Degree from Harvard and lives in the wine country of California with her husband and two curious cats. Her love of nature led to adventures scuba diving the coral reefs of Fiji, exploring the cliffs of Greece, sea kayaking the Rosario Straits and white water rafting the wild and scenic rivers of the west—and romance!

In LOVE BATS LAST, author Pamela Aares introduces you to the Heart of the Game series. Get ready for All-Star alpha males and the strong women they come to love!

A stormy night changes their lives forever…

The baseball diamond isn’t the only field for all-star player Alex Tavonesi; he also runs his family’s prestigious vineyard. What he can’t seem to run is his love life. He’s closing in on the perfect vintage and the perfect game, but so far the perfect woman has eluded him.

Veterinarian Jackie Brandon is eluding her aristocratic past and memories of a soccer star who jilted her just before their wedding. She devotes herself to a marine mammal rescue center on the northern California coast, where hundreds of seals and sea lions are washing up dead.

A chance meeting in a midnight storm brings Alex and Jackie together to rescue a stranded whale. Watching her work, he realizes she’s the passionate, courageous woman he thought he’d never find–he just has to overcome her deep distrust of jocks. Jackie’s passion and courage lead her to discover what’s killing the sea mammals. The culprits want to silence her, and Alex is the only one standing in their way. What will he sacrifice to save the woman he loves?

“A new star in the romance world!” —E. Alexander, New York Times best-selling author

Chapter One

She should’ve asked for help.Jackie gunned the motor and ran the inflatable Zodiac up onto the muddy riverbank. At eight that morning, putting in downriver to collect soil and water samples had been a good idea. At two in the afternoon, the work was grueling. She should’ve listened to Gage and brought an intern. Somebody. Anybody. She tied the stern line of the Zodiac to an overhanging willow branch. A startled kingfisher squawked at her and flew upriver. She looped the strap of her backpack over her arm and slid over the side of the boat. Her feet sank deep into the mud. Cold water seeped over the top of her boots, and she grabbed at the willow branch and fought to keep her balance. She dragged her feet out of the mud and stomped up onto a crescent of beach, muttering under her breath. She’d take climbing a solid wall of granite over mincing about on slippery riverbeds any day.

Stepping carefully, she inched along to where a narrow trail led up from the river. Thick willows lined the riverbank and hid everything above them. Deer tracks in the mud told her this was a place where animals came for an evening drink.

Shielding her face with her hand, she squinted upriver. If she worked fast, she could cover another mile, maybe two, before dark, gathering water samples along this stretch of river. She’d still have time to get back to her truck, winch the Zodiac onto its trailer and drive the samples back to the lab.

Nothing she’d discovered in the past two weeks added up. Someone had dumped a massive amount of fertilizer near the mouth of the river where it met the San Francisco Bay. The fertilizer had caused the worst diatom bloom ever recorded in the North Bay, and the bloom was killing harbor seals in the area. But fertilizer was expensive. Dumping that much fertilizer made no sense.

It was more than a puzzle to solve.

They’d rescued twenty seals in just the past week and however the stuff was getting into the water, she was determined to stop whoever was responsible. Seals and whales, all the marine animals, had enough problems without adding dumped chemicals into the mix.

She shrugged her backpack off her shoulders and pulled out her GPS and map. The map showed two vineyards just above where she’d landed, the first of several north of where the Susul River met the San Francisco Bay. She pulled her notebook and a sample jar from the backpack. Water lapped at her feet as she squatted to scoop some of the muddy soil into the jar. She snapped on the lid and wrote the coordinates on the front label.

She stuffed the sample jar and map into her knapsack and tossed it over the side of the Zodiac. With a flick of her hand, she freed the line from the willow branch and turned to push the boat from the tiny beach. It didn’t budge.

Bracing herself in the mud, she put her shoulder against the pontoon and shoved hard. It didn’t move even a fraction of an inch.

Great.

She was two miles from where she’d parked her truck downriver and didn’t relish the idea of trying to find a vineyard hand to help her. There’d be questions. Questions she wasn’t prepared to answer, not yet.

She walked to the bow of the Zodiac. It jutted up, maybe just enough for her to hang her weight from the front and pop up the midsection. She stepped into the river and sucked in her breath as she sank neck deep into an eddy pool. Feeling with her feet, she found a flat rock that gave her solid footing. She reached up and wrapped the bowline around her hands and tugged her full weight against it. Her hands slipped and she splashed back into the chilly water.

“It’s a bit early in the season for a swim.”

Adrenaline shot through her as she scrambled to her feet. A tall and ridiculously handsome man stood blocking the trail. He looked like he’d been airlifted out of a men’s fashion magazine. He squatted, bringing him to her eye level. She froze, unprepared for the intensity of his gaze. He had deep blue eyes, the color of the sea before a storm. Those eyes crinkled as a slow, easy smile curved his lips.

“Just testing the water,” she said with a bravado she didn’t feel.

Goose bumps rose along her arms as she sloshed out of the water and stepped onto the riverbank. She wished they were just from the cold. To give her hands something to do, she brushed ineffectively at the mud on her jeans.

“Can I give you a hand?”

He held a half-eaten sandwich, one of those piled-high deli sandwiches that Americans loved. Her stomach grumbled; she’d forgotten her own lunch. But this was no time to be thinking about food.

He didn’t look dangerous. But the expensive-looking slacks and perfectly tailored shirt he wore were out of place. She was from England—she knew a custom-tailored shirt from a Savile row tailor when she saw one. Why anyone would be wearing a three-hundred-dollar shirt and Prada loafers in river brambles was anybody’s guess.

“No,” she said, backing up a step. “I was just leaving.”

His assessing gaze sent a shiver down her spine, pushed it deep. She tugged at her shirt. Wet and plastered against her skin, it was almost transparent. She didn’t have to look down to know he could see her nipples puckered from the chilled water. She wished she’d taken the time to put on a bra.

She glanced up, and he quickly averted his eyes. Every cell in her body suddenly said flee.

She leaned over the pontoon and grabbed her backpack, rummaged to the bottom, found her jacket and pulled it on. She felt his eyes on her once again as she tugged up the zipper. At least she didn’t feel naked anymore.

She put a hand on the Zodiac, wishing that her touch would magically free it.

“What brings you up here? I don’t see many people boating in this stretch of river—just the occasional kayaker doing some bird watching. It’s mighty shallow.”

He gave her the perfect answer.

“I was looking for nesting clapper rails.”

“That shouldn’t take long,” he said. “There’ve only been a few sightings in this area since I’ve lived here. They’re endangered, you know.”

The man knew something about birds. And he was local. Could be good. Could be bad.

“I know.”

He quirked his brow. “And you’d be more likely to find clapper rails in the fields, wouldn’t you?”

He thought she was a clueless bird watcher. She should’ve chosen a different bird, but she really didn’t know the birds of the region all that well, except for the marine birds.

The man smiled again.

A smile shouldn’t send a zip of unnerving energy straight into her, but it did. She’d sunk herself in her work for so long, studiously avoiding exactly that kind of smile. He had the ease of a man who knew the effect he had on women. An ease she knew only too well, having once fallen prey to it at the hands of another man who knew how to wield his charm and allure.

She looked away from his face and down to his hands.

“Nice-looking Zodiac,” he said. “But you couldn’t have come up from the bay. It’d take you half a day with that small motor. You put in somewhere south of here?”

An observant man. Usually she liked that type. She tried not to be dazzled by his near perfect physique and a face that was more handsome than any man should be allowed. It was distracting. And dangerous. That she also knew from experience.

“I might ask what you’re doing here,” she said, deflecting. She eyed the Zodiac, assessing another approach to freeing it from the mud.

“Eating,” he said with the same dazzling smile.

A wise guy. From his polished American accent and fine clothing, obviously a very wealthy and well-educated wise guy. But he didn’t have the body of a businessman.

He grinned and waved the sandwich at her.

“There’s a great deli about two hundred feet from here. Can I buy you a sandwich? You look like you could use one.”

She dragged her hair away from her face. She’d love a sandwich. But there was a mile of river to sample between here and the vineyard properties to the north. And she didn’t want to answer questions. He looked like the type to ask plenty of them.

“Thanks, but I have to get back.”

“Back where?”

Right. Not the cleverest of responses on her part.

“Back to, um…”

Jeez. Tracking down water samples had made her feel like she was in some sort of cheesy spy novel or something. This guy was just a guy having lunch near his local deli. Right. Dressed in expensive clothes and eating a sandwich by a really crummy spot in the river. She might be good at chasing down the mysteries of marine mammals, their lives, their health and the way the bigger picture affected them, but she was never much good at figuring out people.

“Back to work,” she said flatly.

“Where do you work? Can’t be around here.”

It was a simple question, a question she’d answered hundreds, maybe thousands of times. She hated to lie, usually didn’t have any reason to, but it was hard to ignore the small voice telling her to do just that. Maybe the sun had addled her brain. And she hadn’t been sleeping well. She’d read that lack of sleep could make you paranoid, make you read things into situations that weren’t there. She really should get more sleep.

“I work at the California Marine Mammal Center,” she said as she pulled her foot from the muck and edged closer to the Zodiac.

“The seal hospital near the Golden Gate Bridge?”

The Center was known for their quick response in rescuing injured marine mammals, doctoring them up and returning them to the ocean, but the work went far beyond that. Yet right now she didn’t feel like explaining.

She nodded.

“I’ve been meaning to get over there. For about ten years,” he said with a laugh.

“Evidently not a priority,” she said, trying not to like the sound of his laugh. “Or if it is, maybe you’re direction challenged?” She hadn’t meant to engage him, but his smooth manner was like oil on a hillside, and she just kept sliding along.

He sprang up from his crouch with a catlike, almost effortless, motion and took a couple steps down the path toward her. She stepped back and nearly lost her balance as her foot sank into the mud.

She fisted her hands against her hips, and he stopped walking.

“I heard you’re having a rash of seal deaths,” he said, suddenly serious. “Any clues as to what’s causing the diatom bloom?”

Her breath hitched in her chest. People in the Bay Area knew about the seal strandings; reports been all over the news. But most didn’t know about the diatom bloom or if they did, they didn’t get the connection. Maybe he was a scientist. But he didn’t look like a scientist. Scientists never had muscles like his.

“It’s too early to tell.” At least it wasn’t a complete lie. It was too early to tell. “I really have to be going.”

She turned and pushed her shoulder against the pontoon. Color crept into her face. She was stuck, in more ways than one.

“Here,” he said as he closed the distance between them. He bent down and put the sandwich on a rock. “Hop in. I’ll shove you off.”

She tilted her head and shaded her eyes. Maybe he could do it; he looked incredibly strong. His shoulders reached beyond those of most normal men. Only movie thugs and athletes had shoulders like that.

God, she was being ridiculous. Letting him shove her off was the best solution. Maybe the only one.

“Okay,” she said.

Their gazes locked, and she felt both trapped and held.

“I don’t bite,” he said.

There it was again, that easy, wide smile. She was really losing it if she could let herself be charmed by a stranger standing on a riverbank.

Before she could move away, he closed his hands around her waist and lifted her over the side of the boat.

“Straddle the pontoon on the opposite side,” he said as he released her. “Lean into it.”

The confidence of his tone told her he was used to giving orders.

He walked to the bow of the boat and stepped into the water. She noticed that he didn’t fall into the eddy pool. Maybe he knew this stretch of river very, very well.

She hung her weight against the pontoon and watched his arm muscles work as he gripped the bow line and levered his shoulder against the boat. With perfect control he tipped the bow down. The bottom of the boat sucked up off the riverbed with a sigh and a slurp, and with a firm, steady motion, he pushed the boat into the river.

“You might need this.” He grinned and tossed the bow line over the side. She caught it with one hand.

“Nice catch,” he said as he stepped out of the water.

Mud covered his expensive shoes and stained up his pant legs. He apparently didn’t notice or didn’t care.

Her hands shook as she started the engine. Only then did she remember she hadn’t thanked him. She waved and shouted thanks over the buzz of the motor.

“My name’s Alex,” he said as he waved and stared after her. “Maybe I’ll see you around these parts again.”

Not if she could help it. Maybe he wouldn’t notice that she was headed north, upriver to the vineyards. Besides, why would he care?

“There aren’t any marine mammals up that way,” he shouted with a puzzled smile. “No clapper rails either.”

She shrugged and looked resolutely upriver.

So much for not noticing.

It’s a dangerous game they’re playing. For as they give in to passion, they must lay bare their souls for a love that could heal—and free—them both.

Bared is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences.

About the Author:

susanmI cannot remember a time when I wasn’t driven to write. I attribute this passion to a creative God and to parents who love books and more particularly to a dad who majored in English and passed on a passion for writing.

I was born in 1961 in San Diego, California, and am the second of three daughters. I spent my very average childhood in just two houses. I attended Point Loma College in San Diego, majoring in education, but I would have been smarter to major in English with a concentration in writing. The advice I give now to anyone wondering what to major in is follow your heart and choose a career you are passionate about.

I didn’t do a lot of writing in the years my husband was on active duty in the Air Force, when we were living overseas, or when we were having children. When my little heirs were finally all in school, though, I became aware of a deep, gnawing desire to write a novel; a desire I managed to ignore for several years.

Finally when I could disregard it no longer, I resigned in 2002 as editor of a small town newspaper, and set out to write my first book, “Why the Sky is Blue.” It took four months to write and ten months to be accepted by a publisher. But I was absolutely thrilled to sign with Harvest House Publishers in 2003. I am now working on my sixth novel for Harvest House and it’s been a wonderful, thrilling ride.

Jennifer’s Review of A Fall of Marigolds

Review (4.5 Stars): This was such a beautiful yet haunting novel about two women who each experience a devastating loss and are connected through time by a vibrant scarf of marigolds.  I instantly connected with both characters, Clara and Taryn, and I felt their heart-wrenching experience of loss right along with them.  This book goes back and forth between the stories of these two amazing women, which adds to the complexity of this moving novel.

For me, I remember 9/11 as though it was yesterday, as many of us in the medical profession sat horrified by the images that were being played over and over again by various news programs.  This book brought back those emotions which brought me to tears at times and I know that this book will stay with me for quite a while. Ms. Meissner did an amazing job creating such well-written characters and an emotionally engaging tale that will strike a chord with many readers.

A woman drawn into a dangerous game. A man who may not be what he seems. Passion raises the stakes in Sally Eggert’s electrifying novel of deception and desire.

Josie Nielsen’s anonymous life as a bartender is a world away from her classified job at a covert agency—and the terrifying night she was almost killed for her country’s secrets. That was the night Josie found out the hard way that no one had her back, especially not the man she thought she loved. But she’s pulled back in when her new boyfriend becomes the target of a government drug sting.

A sexy, laid-back barfly, Johnny Boyer is the kind of guy Josie can count on . . . to disappear before things get too complicated. But after she learns that Johnny is part of a major international trafficking operation, Josie can’t let him out of her sight. And yet even as she plunges into the mortal danger that surrounds Johnny, her attraction to him burns hotter than ever. She just isn’t sure whether she’s falling for a ruthless, cold-blooded criminal or the only man she’s ever met worth trusting with her life.
